Tips for composting with leaves Leaf cleanup season is here. Depending on your point of view, leaf drop can be anything from a welcome sign that summer is really over to a minor inconvenience to a major landscaping challenge. Here are a couple of tips to help your landscape get the most out of the circumstances. Chopping up your leaves with a mower is the best first step to leaf management, and sometimes the only one needed if you are not interested in composting them. Mulching mowers work very well for this, but any rotary lawn mower will do the job. In addition to doing a better job of chopping up leaves, mulching mowers minimize the dust and debris the operator must endure. If you don’t have this option, you can

to simply sprinkle some fertilizer on the pile, preferably throughout the pile as it is being constructed. Note: If you are an organic gardener, you can use animal manure, blood meal, fish emulsion, or any other nitrogen source. Composting does not require anything special in the way of a container, old pallets or cages made from rolled wire will work just fine. Even if pallets don’t appeal to you, keep the general size of bin they would create in mind as a pile 4’X4’X4’ is large enough to encourage decomposition, but small enough that it can be turned by the average gardener in one session. Commercial compost bins can also be purchased but they are often undersized for dealing with large volumes of leaves.
For more information on composting and its role in building healthy soil, see OSU Fact Sheet #HLA-6436 Healthy Garden Soils or you can contact Keith Reed, the Horticulturist in the Payne
County Extension office. Keith can be reached via email at keith.reed@okstate.edu, phone at 405-747-8320, or in person at the Payne County Extension office, located at 315 W. 6th in Stillwater.

federal coronavirus relief money to provide rental assistance to eligible tenants and mortgage relief to homeowners, but officials say the program has not been working as well as intended. Through the end of September, the program has paid out $9.7 million on behalf of 5,686 renters, according to the Pennsylvania Hous-
ing Finance Agency. Some landlords have been reluctant to apply because of a $750-per-month cap on payments, state officials say. Many housing units rent for more than $750, but the program did not allow landlords to ask tenants to make up the difference. That is changing. Starting Saturday, the program will
permit landlords and renters, as well as lenders and delinquent homeowners, to enter into repayment agreements for any money still owed after the monthly benefit is paid, Gov. Tom Wolf said Tuesday. Landlords and lenders will still have the option of forgiving the remaining debt. “We cannot allow thousands of families
to become homeless because of the pandemic,” Wolf said in a news release. “Improving the program and giving people more time to apply will help families to stay in their homes. That will reduce the strain on social services and help landlords to pay their mortgages.” – AP

Now that you have found the perfect home, it is time to tie up all the loose ends and finalize the sale. Part of this process is to pay your closing costs. Closing costs can be a surprise, as they are more than most buyers expect, especially first-time homebuyers. With a good banker and real estate agent on your side, you can better understand and prepare for these costs. So, what is included in your closing costs? What’s Included in Closing Costs? Closing costs can be made up of multiple items. Costs from the lender may include origination fees, points, underwriting, processing, appraisal and a credit report, among other fees. These costs can vary from lender to lender and depend on several factors, but generally cost between $1,000$6,000. Fees from the title company, such as a closing fee, title insurance, abstracting and the survey, can range between $1,000$5,000 depending on the title company, state and individual transaction details. There will also be money needed at closing for your prepaid items. These consist of prepaid interest

‘Racial covenants’ illegal; millions still on deeds DEAR DAVE: When my husband and I recently refinanced our mortgage, we looked at our deed. There is a clause in there that states, “Said premises shall not be rented, leased or conveyed to, or occupied by, any person other than of the white or Caucasian race.” That’s disgusting! Does this mean that we can only sell or rent to a white family? ANSWER: No. Though such racially biased language still appears on older property deeds, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that they were legally unenforceable decades ago. A racial covenant like yours, technically known as a “racial restrictive covenant,” can be found in property deeds in parts of all 50 states. Though they cannot be enforced, they remain on millions of property deeds and serve as a tacit reminder of our nation’s history of prejudice.
