Of ghostly disclosures, the Amityville House and ‘Mothman’ With Halloween here, it’s time to answer a few spirited questions from readers. DEAR DAVE: My grandfather spent his entire life in West Virginia, and he used to tell me about how he and my grandma stopped just short of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant before it collapsed in 1967. He said that they stopped because they were silently warned of the coming catastrophe by a huge, flying creature that locals call “Mothman.” I’ve since read that some people believe that Mothman may have actually caused the bridge to collapse. What do you think really happened? ANSWER: For the record, federal inspectors determined that the collapse – which killed 46 people – was triggered by a single, inch-long link under the bridge that failed. The bridge spanned the Ohio River, connecting Point Pleasant in West Virginia to Gallipolis, Ohio. Authorities aside, many believe that the creature known as Mothman may have had a role in

the disaster. The first documented sightings of Mothman began in the 1960s. Witnesses said his body resembled that of a large and muscular man, but with an insect-like face, fiery red eyes and wings that spanned 10 feet across. Some people have said they were stalked by the flying figure while driving down U.S. Route 35, sometimes moving more than 100 miles per hour to outrun him. Many folks, like your grandfather, have said that they were so frightened by the sudden appearance of Mothman just minutes before the Dec. 15 collapse of the bridge that they turned around and went home. The decision may have saved their lives. Others point a sinister finger at Mothman, claiming that he was fleeing the bridge after silently wreaking havoc on the structure’s girding. At least one scientist has claimed that Mothman is really just a large crane or other type of bird that may have been contaminated by leakage from a nearby site that was

ABOUT REAL ESTATE

old Ronald DeFeo Jr. went on his renowned killing spree in 1974, after claiming he was urged to commit the murders of his six family members by disembodied voices. The really strange stuff, though, supposedly happened when the next owners moved in. They fled the property just 28 days later, after reporting startling paranormal activities that included beatings by unseen hands, walls that inexplicitly oozed with green slime and occasional visits from a demon-like pig that could grow as large as the house itself.

The resulting movie about their alleged ordeal was released in 1979 and is still considered one of the scariest motion pictures in history. Subsequent owners have remodeled the property several times over the years, so it looks little like it did when the murders and alleged hauntings occurred in the 1970s. Its address was legally changed to deter tourists. None of those owners have reported any major events that experts would consider paranormal in nature. (c)2021 Cowles Syndicate Inc.

Consider the following tips for your November landscape: • November is a good time to make a nitrogen application for cool-season turfgrasses such as tall fescue assuming additional growth is needed. Plants respond slowly to nitrogen as the temperatures cool so you will not get a quick flush of growth as you do in the spring or early fall. • One of the most significant factors to the decline of tall fescue is the build-up of excess leaves. While it is not necessary to remove leaves as soon as they land on the turf, it is important to prevent them from completely blocking all light, water and air movement. One of the easiest ways to dispose of excess leaves is to continue mowing and chop them into small pieces where they will easily decompose directly into the turf, providing nutrients as they go. At some point, you may still need to collect the excess, but the quantity will be much smaller and easier to manage. Well-chopped leaves also provide a nice head start to the composting process, with smaller pieces decomposing much quicker than whole leaves. • Remove and compost any summer vegetable plants if

Williams suggests asking yourself these questions to make the process feel less abstract: • What would happen if I were in the hospital for a while? • What if I were incapacitated and had to undergo surgery: Who would I want to make the decision for me? • Who would pay the bills or walk the dog while I could not? If you start writing down your answers, you’ve already taken the first step toward making an estate plan. You’ll need to hire a lawyer when you’re ready to officially move forward.

PPP is gone, but government help for small businesses isn’t NerdWallet

PROGRAMS States and cities continue to implement their own COVID-19 relief programs, as well as roll out new ones. The city of Chicago, for example, recently announced the launch of the Chicago Creative Worker Assistance Program, which has allotted $2.3 million in grant relief to artists and creative workers that suffered lost income due to the pandemic. Similarly, the California Rebuilding Fund has provided loans to more than 700 small businesses — and in September, announced the addition of $56.5 million of available capital. The program offers low-interest loans to eligible businesses across the state, distributing them through a network of community lenders. In general, community lenders like community development financial institutions, or CDFIs, can be a great option for affordable financing, particularly for traditionally underserved businesses, such as those operating in low-income areas, minority-owned businesses

or women-owned businesses. It’s worthwhile to look at CDFIs from both a geographic and sector angle, says Randell Leach, CEO of Beneficial State Bank, a CDFI with locations in California, Oregon and Washington. If you’re a natural food store, for example, there’s a good chance you’ll find a CDFI that’s focused on that, he says. Business owners can search state or city government websites and reach out to local representatives or industry groups to find grant and loan programs

in their area that they might qualify for. To find CDFIs in your region, or those that might be relevant to your business sector, you can browse the official list of certified CDFIs on the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund website. Organizations like SCORE and local Small Business Development Centers also offer access to free recovery resources and can help business owners identify potential funding opportunities.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT PPP FORGIVENESS Over 11 million PPP loans were approved, and as of Oct. 3, approximately 7.5 million applications for PPP loan forgiveness have been submitted, according to the SBA. Loan forgiveness won’t offer your business additional funding. But it will ensure you can put money you already have toward expenses rather than PPP loan payments. If you received a PPP loan, you have until the loan’s maturity date to apply for forgiveness.

With any type of SBA 7(a) loan, however, you’ll likely need good credit, strong revenue and a few years in business to qualify. The challenge that some businesses are having is an inability to show historical cash flow due to pandemic effects, said Jodi Rathbun-Briggs, senior vice president and chief lending officer at Greylock Federal Credit Union in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, via email. “Borrowers should have well-thoughtout recovery plans and thorough discussions with their banker regarding those plans,” she said. The SBA offers a Lender Match tool on its website to connect potential borrowers with lenders within two business days. You might also contact a local bank in your community or one with which you have an existing relationship to see if it offers SBA 7(a) loans. LOCAL LOAN AND GRANT

Japanese gardens speak to the moment By Katherine Roth

Japanese-style gardens first caught the public imagination in the U.S. at an 1893 world exposition in Chicago, became a sought-after feature in Gilded Age estates, and were later adapted to open-plan modernist homes. Today they have evolved, and continue to inspire garden design at a time when many people are trying to forge a closer connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. “One reason that gardens are so successful in Japan is that the house-garden relationship is set up to be so integrated. There are large views of the garden, and more unobstructed views. Gardens are enclosed and surround the house, so it’s as if your living space extends out much further,” says Asher Browne of Oakland, New Jersey, who trained in Kyoto, Japan, and now creates Japanese-inspired gardens for clients in the United States. “That aesthetic is definitely catching on.” Japanese garden design in this country has moved well beyond stereotypical features like lanterns and imported Japanese cherries and maples, says Sadafumi Uchiyama, chief curator

“In Japan at least, it seems that there is one core idea that has come down over centuries, and that is the idea of bringing the beauty of nature into daily lives,” he says. Other aesthetic concepts he says are widely appreciated now are asymmetrical balance, and the beauty and importance of rocks, stones ROBERT C. cializing in Japanese garden aesthetics say one persistent misconception is that these gardens are low-maintenance or even maintenance-free. Nothing is maintenance-free, and sometimes Japanese-style gardens involve even more maintenance than other gardens, they agree. “It’s not so much about massive cleaning and pruning projects, but about constant small actions. Every time I walk in the garden I pick up a few pine needles, a bit of trash or a few leaves,” says Uchiyama. “In Japan, only about 20 percent of the land is habitable, so people learn to care for their environment. One way is to do incremental cleaning and maintenance. It’s about an approach, about caring, and how you see things.”

U.S., where the landscaping was traditionally there to dress the exterior of the house, but was very disconnected from interior space. I think especially today, that idea of connecting the indoors and the outdoors is an aesthetic that a lot of people strive for,” he explains. The Japanese garden aesthetic “is very simple sounding, but it’s the most difficult thing I ever thought of in my life,” explains Powell. As for sustainability, there’s been a major shift in thinking about Japanese-style gardens away from specimen gardens, which tend to feel a bit like a botanical garden, and toward greater use of plants adapted to local environments. “It’s very possible to create a wonderful Japanese garden using all native plants,” says Browne.
