Supreme Court may expand federal anti-discrimination laws to protect LGBTQ Our nation’s highest court soon will decide whether the federal law that bans discrimination based on “sex” should cover sexual preferences, not just a person’s born gender. DEAR DAVE: You said in a recent column that the federal Fair Housing Act does not protect gay and bisexual people from housing discrimination. But because the act specifically bans discrimination based on sex, wouldn’t that include a person’s sexual preferences? ANSWER: No, but that could soon

the house can help. Obviously, a fireplace is an excellent heating source, but when the fire’s not burning, make sure you keep the damper closed. Add caulking around the hearth and check the seal on the flue damper to make it as snug as possible. Another

idea is to use your oven and stove for cooking; not only will they add heat to the rooms, hot meals will keep you cozy as well! Check the insulation in your attic and walls, and hire a professional if necessary to improve the situation. An under-insulated

attic will make a big difference in your heating bills. Also make sure that your basement is properly sealed and caulked. Unsealed basements allow cold air to infiltrate the home and push warm air out of the living space. Consider using

landscaping elements to improve your comfort. Windbreaks to the north, west and east sides of your home can block the cold winter wind. A wall or fence, evergreen trees and shrubs can make effective windbreaks, according to Energy Star.

Horticulture tips for November Home Grown KEITH REED point, you may still need to collect the excess, but the quantity will be much smaller and easier to manage. Well-chopped leaves also provide a nice head start to the composting process, with smaller pieces decomposing much quicker than whole leaves. • Remove and compost any summer vegetable plants if you have not already done so. Leaving plants in the garden tends to harbor pests and disease so clean up any remaining plant residue as soon as possible. You can also still plant winter cover crops but act soon for any hope of getting an acceptable stand. • If your ornamental gardens are huge clean-up task

in the spring, you can help lessen the burden by doing some of the cleanup through the winter months. Of course, all summer flowering annuals can be pulled and composted now. On herbaceous perennials, only remove the stems that are already loose or can be easily dislodged. This is usually a good sign that the plant will not need this summer’s growth for insulation from the winter cold. • When it comes to woody perennials, knowing the best time to clean up or prune is going to depend on the plant’s cold

tolerance as well as it’s bloom time. Rather than tackling this subject in a short article, it’s better to contact the Extension office if you have questions about specific plants. For example, cutting back a spring blooming plant like winter jasmine now will remove next spring’s flower buds while cutting back a crape myrtle now will increase the likelihood of winter dieback. • November is also a great time of year to walk the landscape and makes notes about changes you would like to make for next season while things are still fresh on your mind.

Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, November 1, 2019

Consider the following tips for your November landscape: • November is a good time to make a nitrogen application for cool-season turfgrasses such as tall fescue assuming additional growth is needed. Plants respond slowly to nitrogen as the temperatures cool so you will not get a quick flush of growth as you do in the spring or early fall. • One of the most significant factors to the decline of tall fescue is the build-up of excess leaves. While it is not necessary to remove leaves as soon as they land on the turf, it is important to prevent them from completely blocking all light, water and air movement. One of the easiest ways to dispose of excess leaves is to continue mowing and chop them into small pieces where they will easily decompose directly into the turf, providing nutrients as they go. ate displays full of energy and depth. Whether it is mixing traditional porcelain with funky tin accent plates or layering plaid and stripes, it is OK to try new combinations. You might be surprised at how much renewed love you have for the tired china that has been collecting dust in the cabinet. If there is one thing I love about setting a table, it is mixing traditional antiques with my newest finds. It is a nostalgic nod to the “old” and a beautiful way of mixing (and matching) family traditions and making them your own. Textile layering. With all this talk about mixing and matching, we can’t forget about textile layering. As a fabric fanatic, whenever I hear a customer saying she needs to spice up her tabletop, my thoughts immediately go to textiles.

The perfect place to start is with a table cover. A show-stopping tablecloth can make a world of different in adding excitement to a table. One of our go-to table hacks is using a throw blanket as a table covering. It adds all the color and texture you desire and is easy to throw in the watching machine afterward (be sure to check the care instructions first). If you have an extra-long table for the holidays, try overlapping two runners _ you can hide the center meeting point with a beautiful centerpiece. Or, mix things up and run multiple runners the width of your table, acting more as placemats for two place settings across from each other. I love using wooden platforms for height or woven mats to add a natural element. If I’m feeling extra elegant, I like

ments from your tabletop to your chairs with ribbon to finish off your look. One of my favorite touches is the classic small boxwood wreath tied with ribbon and topped off with a sweet bow. And of course, we love to make a statement with the chairs themselves, dressing our tables up

with impactful host and hostess chairs. As much as we love decorating our tabletops, what’s most important is the people with whom you share your table. I hope this season is full of good food and good times with people you love, around a table you’ve had fun dressing up.
