It’s worth noting that the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs annually, resulting in an estimated 800,000 injuries that require medical attention. Dog-related injuries account for about one-third of all liability claims, the nonprofit Insurance Information Institute says, with the payout for each covered claim last year averaging $39,017.

It varies from year to year, but this year’s payout was $1,606, which some are already using to help pay their utility bills as the weather turns colder and the nights grow longer. Though Mikey has never bit anyone, some insurers shy away from issuing a policy to owners of pit bulls because the dogs have a reputation for being dangerous and unpredictable. It’s a rep that the pet-loving Humane Society of America disputes if the dog belongs to a responsible owner like you. Winter “nights” in Anchorage, its largest city, can last about 20 hours, and the opposite is true during the summer. But few other states offer such majestic beauty, and its list of outdoor recreational options is virtually unlimited. Tax-wise, Alaska gives retirees a warm welcome. There is no state

*** DEAR DAVE: We have been shopping for a new company to insure our home. Some of the companies we have contacted wouldn’t even give us a quote after we told them that we have a pit bull, even though “Mikey” is the sweetest dog in the world and has never bitten anyone. Can an insurer flatly reject an application based solely on a dog’s breed? ANSWER: Yes. Insurers can reject an application for a new policy or refuse to renew an existing one for any number of reasons, and the type of dog that

America’s largest state offers big tax benefits to retired people who can weather its cold and sometimes long nights. DEAR DAVE: We will be retiring next year and are planning to sell our longtime home because all of our kids have grown up and we just don’t need a five-bedroom house anymore. We won’t make a big profit because we’ve been borrowing against our equity, so we want to move to some place where our modest Social Security checks won’t be gobbled up by state income taxes. Are there any states that don’t tax Social Security benefits? ANSWER: Yes. There are 37 states that don’t tax Social Security

How can I make my home more pet-friendly? By Diana Crandall, Angie’s List

Dogs and cats are treasured members of the family who demand more than just love and affection. Vet visits, shredded toys and carpet steaming are likely as much of a part of your life as your pet is. Don’t banish your best friend to the backyard or force your pet to release pent-up energy in unhealthy ways. These relatively simple renovations can improve life for Fido – and for you. Change your flooring Whether you’re

planning on getting a kitten, or your dog is getting up there in years, the right pet-friendly flooring can make a world of difference for your pet at any age. Lingering smells, permanent stains and ruined hardwood don’t have to be inevitabile. Tile and stone flooring are waterand stain-resistant, as well as simple to clean. Strand woven bamboo flooring is also a scratch- and stain-resistant option, in addition to being sustainable. For something easier on your budget, luxury vinyl is also a durable option to

fight against stains, scratches and dents. Homeowners report paying between $787 and $2,624 to install vinyl and linoleum, according to the Angie’s List Pricing Guide. Craft a play place Animals have a lot of energy, and sometimes we don’t have it in us to play with them as much as we should. This can lead to health issues and destructive behaviors that damage the home, furniture and flooring. Instead of paying to send your dog to daycare, or punishing your cat for scratching up the

couch again, invest in a pet playpen designed specifically to keep them entertained. Build ramps for cats to get a birds-eye view of their domain; buy a portable playpen for your energic puppy who wants to run rampant through every room in your house. Disguise the litter box No one likes to see (or smell) the litter box, especially if you have more than one cat in your home. Repurposing a bench, upcycling a cabinet and even using unused space under the stairs are all ways to mask

unsavory sights and scents. Not sure where to start, or need help wrapping things up? A handyman can help. Homeowners report the price typically falls between $77 and $155 for a handyman to take on a small task, according to the Angie’s List Pricing Guide. Heat the kennel If it sounds over the top to install radiant heating in your dog’s kennel, it’s not. A heated space can ease aches in pains in older pups, dogs recovering from a surgery or sickness, or pets with short hair

who live in colder environments and aren’t able to naturally protect themselves from the elements. If you have stone or tile floors, consider expanding radiant heat outside of the kennel and throughout the house so everyone in the house reaps the benefit, no matter where they are. The cost of radiant heating installation varies dramatically, but homeowners report paying about $300 on the lower end of the spectrum. Create a cleanup station When your dog or cat gets into

something messy, a carved-out clean-up space in your laundry room, garage or mudroom is the perfect solution. There’s no limit to the possibilities here: From an alcove with an open drain to an elevated tub with built-in stairs, your pet (and your place) will stay sparkling clean. Nationally, homeowners report paying an average of $3,750 to install a human shower, according to the Angie’s List Pricing Guide. A remodeling pro can help you determine what precisely it will cost for your pet.

A tall order for a lower-spout kitchen faucet By Ed Del Grande Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, November 15, 2019

wall behind the kitchen sink, even a lower arching spout can usually fill a large pot. Other advantages

of wall-mounted kitchen faucets include less clutter and easier cleanup around the sink. But since the faucet

water piping needs to be roughed-in behind the wall, labor costs can be higher than a deck-mount faucet installation.

Bottom line: A new wall-mounted kitchen faucet may help you get over your decorating barrier.

Leaf clean-up season has arrived Home Grown KEITH REED mower, either by simply letting the discharge shoot clog up with leaves or leave the bag on the mower without dumping it. The small pieces of leaves remaining after this process break down faster than full leaves, adding nutrients to the soil as they do so. Of course, there is a limit to how many leaves can remain on the surface without damaging the turf. In general, if you can still see some grass after the process, you are probably fine to let the leaves remain in place. If mulching alone does not do the job, composting is the next step. Watering the leaves as the pile is being constructed is much more effective. As far as the nitrogen component, there are options. Depending on your point of view, leaf drop can be anything from a welcome sign that summer is truly over to a minor inconvenience to a major landscaping challenge. No matter where you fit on this spectrum, here are a few tips to help your landscape receive the maximum benefit. featuring stunning silver metallic candelabras – complete with 30-inch tapers, because why not go big? – and vintage-inspired gold rimmed glasses and truly vintage crystal bowls. Top off each table setting with one of the lovely ornaments from the tree for your guests to take home at the end of the night.
