Santa Claus ended 2015 with a “very good” creditrating of 757 (out of a possible 850), according to a tongue-in-cheek estimate by the company that created the FICO scoring system. Saint Nick got high marks for making prompt payments on the mortgage he supposedly took to expand his toy factory, the company says, as well as the loan on his new hybrid sleigh.

Flowers are the best home improvement bargain By Maureen Gilmer

Tribune News Service
Grandmother loved seed-grown flowers that gave her yard a charming cottage garden look for just pennies. Whether gardening on the farm or in the bungalow in town, she didn't buy her seedlings at the garden center. Instead, she ordered seed through early catalogs. Often she grew them in the "dooryard," an old term for the small gardens within picket fences where kids and flowers and herbs shared ground. Imagine the joy of fresh-cut flowers in a dark log cabin, sod home or adobe with small windows and candlelight. Like many gardeners today, Grandmother gardened during the Great Depression by creating large and amazing flower gardens with just a few packets of seeds. Seed-grown flowers are the greatest home improvement bargain out there today, and it's doubly useful to renters who don't want to invest in expensive flowering plants. When you study seed catalogs and websites to shop for spring and summer vegetables, make a point of purchasing some annual flow-
ers to grow with them. Look for old favorites, plants grown since colonial times, plus their newer varieties that expand the color options considerably. When you grow open-pollinated, non-GMO flowers, leave the last blooms to go to seed in the fall where they self-sow for next year. These seeds lie dormant in the cold winter ground until warmth naturally stimulates germination in spring. Two of my favorite self-sowing annuals are the outstanding spring blues: larkspur and bachelor's buttons. Both began in early gardens as strongly blue flowers, then over time evolved through breeding into new colors. Now both plants offer modern pinks and whites and sometimes purple too. Annual larkspur, Consolida ajacis, is a tall spike that prefers the cool evenly moist weather of spring to germinate. They spring up just as their American native wildflower relatives appear in field and fen. Always sow larkspur where they are to grow, because this plant resents transplanting. In full bloom, it averages about 3 feet, making one of
the real standouts that gave Grandmother's garden such old-fashioned beauty. Sow larkspur at locations out of direct wind, then be prepared to stake them to prevent flopping when wet. This plant is less showy than perennial delphinium and makes an affordable alternative to expensive hybrid perennials. While larkspur is offered as a mixture of existing varietal colors, many gardeners so value the clear blue in shades from navy to turquoise. Larkspur lasts less than seven days in a vase, so it's common to sow them every week or two in spring to keep fresh flowers coming far longer. After the first spike is cut, new smaller flower stems will form and these will be the genesis of this year's self sown crop. Beware that all parts of this plant are toxic to humans, pets and livestock. The classic bachelor's button, Centaurea cyanus, is also known as cornflower in grain fields of Europe. They offer exquisite periwinkle blue lacy daisylike flowers once popular in the lapels of 19th century frock coats. Over the years it
has also been bred into many different shades of purple, pink and magenta. However, one of the most exciting new colors is the variety Black Boy, offering dark handsome looks to modern and cottage gardens. With a single stem that splits
into many branches, each plant produces a lot of flowers that make large and full bouquets. Virtually every seed catalog carries both these annual flowers and others that have been a part of our gardens for so many generations. Add them to your vegetable seed

order so you can plant them in the early spring garden to begin the selfsowing that Grandmother used to save money. Along with your greens and peas you'll have beautiful cut flowers to bring indoors to recover after a long dark winter.

Shower your custom shower stall with accessories By Ed Del Grande Tribune News Service
Q: Dear Ed: We’re planning to remove our bathtub and install a large custom shower. As a plumber, you must be full of ideas for accessories we can add to our new shower stall. Can you please list some hot topic custom shower accessories for us? Hopefully, we will be able to install at least some of them. Thanks in advance!
– Al, Alabama A: A custom shower is basically a shower space built in place to meet your exact needs. Usually they’re built with tiles or solid surface materials. Plumbing for a custom shower can include multiple shower heads and body showers, depending on local water use codes. For custom accessories, here are four current trends: 1. Shower locker. These recessed rectangular shelving units can be pur-
chased as a storage component or custom built into a shower wall. 2. Decorative grab bars. While grab bars have been used for years in many showers, custom grab bars include decorative features for form and function. 3. Corner seating. Custom corner seating can be a comfortable way to save space. 4. Shower hooks. Custom placed shower stall hooks are a big reason why after all these years soap on a rope is still hanging in there.

Old and new ideas for lighting By Paul Hodgins The Orange County Register
is making its way into all aspects of home design, and lighting control is no exception. Radio frequency-based systems are the standard technology, but there are other choices, including power-line communication, which uses power transmission lines to carry data to and from your fittings. With programs such as Insteon and WeMo, your lights can now be controlled by smartphone or computer. Lights are an integral part of the Internet of things: many elements of your domestic environment – from the
toaster to the fridge – can now perform autonomously through programming and predetermined commands. Futuristic lighting: Unusual designs, complex shapes, wall sconces and floor lamps that resemble spaceships perched to take off – the pride of many showrooms are lighting fixtures that look like they’ve traveled here from some “Jetsons” future. European designers dominate this category: Italy’s Artemide Group and FLOS, Holland’s Moooi and British design group Tom Dixon.
LED dominance: Fixtures that use light-emitting diodes consume much less energy than other light sources. Also, they produce a fraction of the heat, meaning your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard during the warm season. LEDs don’t contain mercury, so they’re generally healthier than some traditional lights. They can also be built into furnishings and other unusual areas, and they last a long time compared to traditional light bulbs. Manufacturers who had been using old technologies such as
metal halide and cold cathode are finally replacing them with LEDs. And you can program some LED products to change color and intensity. Midcentury modern look: “Mad Men” may be over, but its look lives on. Popular furniture, textiles, colors and fixtures from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s celebrate the simple lines and meticulous craftsmanship of midcentury modern design. Many lighting manufacturers, including Kichler, Progress Lighting, Hinkley and Sonneman, are making lighting fixtures
in midcentury style. Oversize fixtures: Lighting fixtures that are bold focal points, especially in living and dining rooms, are becoming a requirement in stylish homes. Large pendant lamps over kitchen islands and dining room tables are part of this look. Homes with tall ceilings or a two-story foyer are ideal for oversize hanging lights and multitiered chandeliers, which can make a dramatic statement if they’re the first fixture that people see when they enter your home. They naturally draw the eye upward.

You’ve planned the perfect interior remodel. Flooring, wallpaper, furniture, mirrors, art, windows, doors, countertops, sinks and accent colors have been chosen. But all that hard work can be undermined if your personal palace isn’t illuminated properly. Lighting fixtures need just as much careful consideration as any other aspect of your redesign – they often occupy a prominent spot in your home, and they’re the natural object of focus as soon as they’re turned on. And there are new, cutting-edge ways to bring lighting into your home. Light switches will soon be obsolete. “I have been in this business for 28 years, and the last couple of years have seen more changes than maybe the previous 26,” said Houman Shir, managing director and founding partner of Euro Moda, a new high-end lighting and furniture store in Irvine, Calif. It’s a fascinating time – traditionalism coexists with the avant-garde, and new technologies have revolutionized his industry, Shir said. “Chandeliers are popular; so is the
midcentury look. But then we have pieces like this, which are very popular as well.” Shir pointed to a Spanish-made light that looked like an unfurling Mobius strip; its thin surface was a continuous band of bright, warm light. “Everything depends on what kind of statement you want to make. But there are so many more possibilities now.” Here are some fixtures, looks and technologies that are trending, according to Euro Moda, other lighting retailers and important online sources of home-design ideas such as lushome, houzz and Pinterest. Artisanal fixtures: Anything that looks hand-hewn and rustic is big this year, especially when paired with styles of the moment such as the farmhouse look (whitewashed boardand-batten siding and reclaimed wood). Hand-painted finishes, antique mirrored glass, hammered metal and scrollwork are common features of such lighting fixtures, which usually hew to traditional shapes such as swan necks and funnel shades. Connectivity: Smart homes are no longer science fiction, and lighting is an important part of that revolution. Wireless technology
How to get home staged for success Home stagers have moved front and center in the home selling business. They provide a valuable service: They bring key knowledge of what today’s home buyers are looking for, what’s on trend and how to present your home in a way that will appeal to the majority of perspective buyers. social arrangement that allows six people to sit comfortably together. Set the dining table with elegant linen and china. A white lace tablecloth sets a luxurious tone anywhere. While it is not necessary to bring in new furniture, switching up a lamp or lighting fixture can quickly update your room. A few accessories and cushions in the latest colors and patterns are also an easy fix. Do a room check. The kitchen must be clean with clear counters. Dotey sets up an inviting
coffee station on a tray, with cups, coffee or tea pot and a small dish of biscotti -- a welcome sight for homeowner and guests. The bathroom should look and feel like a spa, clean and spacious (clear away any personal hygiene products). You should feel spoiled here. Build the mood with fluffy white towels and a simple white weave shower curtain. Place a single white orchid on the counter. Bedrooms can be a disaster; rushed lives often mean we leave this personal room messy. Dotey fol-
lows her game plan shown here. Clear paths, storage behind the mirrored doors, a soothing neutral palette of white and wood, and a white fur seat on the chair have turned this unused space into an appealing getaway. What about that wall color? Paint is the most affordable renovation tool there is. The universal go-to color for builders and buyers is a warm white. A neutral setting makes personal options easy to consider for the perspective buyer.

gobs of compost, because it won’t fit into existing raised bed gardens. Organic gardeners use these three important forms of plant nutrition to maintain fertility without over-filling: 1. GUANO Ounce for ounce, guano is the richest source of organic nitrogen available, so you need a lot less of it to boost the nutrient than with any other natural fertilizer. It is harvested from bat caves and places seabirds have congregated for a long time. There are two common forms, bat guano at 9-3-1 (9 percent nitrogen) and more potent seabird guano at 12-12-3 (12 percent nitrogen). One of the interesting aspects of
guano from caves is the microbes that live in the deep cumulative layer that builds up over eons. These organisms add incredible diversity to soil microorganism populations when you use bat guano. Seabird guano is the highest available source of organic nitrogen with a bonus of root and fruit benefitting phosphorous as well. Blend either or both into the top foot of soil, or mix with water to make tea to pour around large plants during the growing season. 2. KELP Fish emulsion fertilizer has long been an organic favorite, but only recently it was discovered to contain a lot of kelp. Giant

health. Castings are valued for both micronutrient content and microbes. Microbial activity in worm castings is 10 to 20 times higher than the soil and organic matter that the worm ingests. Nothing works better as insurance against hard-to-diagnose nutrient deficiency. The sooner you add these materials to the spring garden, the sooner they become available to plants. Integrate one or all three generously into all your raised beds to bring them back to life before sowing and planting. Here’s a tip: Don’t use all of it at
planting time. All three can be used during the growing season to stimulate plants during midsummer malaise. Be sure to add guano in the fall so your autumn sown winter greens will be large and luscious. It’s easy to make a raised bed, but nobody talks about long-term maintenance of its soil. If the soil level falls as organic matter decomposes, add compost to bring it back up. If the bed is full and soil is aged, resort to these three secret substances that will contribute invisible vigor for your most productive year ever.

The Payne County Extension office is currently in the middle of training a new group of Master Gardeners and Botanic Garden Ambassadors. Following our recent session on small fruits, one of the quiz questions asked: If a friend asks you for your best advice on growing blueberries in Payne County, what would you tell them? Perhaps the best answer would be “grow something else” since blueberries just do not like Oklahoma summers. But since you are reading this, we’ll assume that is not the answer you are looking for. With that in mind, here are some tips to give you the greatest opportunity for success with these plants that really don’t care for Oklahoma summers. Soil preparation, careful cultivar selection, and proper siting are the three big keys. Don’t waste your time unless you are diligent with all three. The soil must be light enough to allow good air and water movement through it and high in organic matter. Raised beds can be very helpful here. If you are trying to modify heavy red Payne County clay,

KEITH REED forget it. Invest in some quality topsoil instead. The soil pH needs to be between 4.5-5.5. While not unheard of for Payne County soils, it is rare. It’s also well below the level that most plants prefer. The only way to know for sure what your soil pH is is to have it tested. Our office can do that for you for ten dollars. Soil pH can be lowered using sulfur and other soil-acidifying amendments, but it can take several months for the chemical change to take place. For this reason, the most successful growers dedicate a year or more to soil preparation before the blueberries are purchased. Site selection includes selecting a location that provides some afternoon shade and protection from our drying south-southwest winds. A bit of morning shade is ok as long as the plants receive full sun during the day. OSU Fact Sheet #HLA-6248 Blueberry Production for the
Home Garden provides much more information on the topics we touched on above. It includes a lengthy list of cultivars suitable for Oklahoma. In addition to the list provided on the fact sheet, local growers report success with the following cultivars: Pink Lemonade, Peach Sorbet, Blue Ray, Blue Crop, Brazzleberry, and Blue Glaze. Good luck in your endeavors. If you are already successfully growing blueberries in our area and are doing something differently than what we have suggested, we would like to hear from you. For more information on this or any other horticultural topic, you can contact Keith Reed, the Horticulturist in the Payne County Extension office. Keith can be reached via email at keith.reed@okstate.e du, phone at 405747-8320, or in person at the Payne County Extension office, located at 315 W. 6th in Stillwater.

The Internal Revenue Service generally allows taxpayers who missed out on a money-saving tax break to file an amended return -and thus reclaim part of their money -- up to three years after the return’s original filing deadline. Your letter states that you filed your most recent return last April, so you have until April

A proposal on Capitol Hill would allow renters to deduct their monthly payments, much as homeowners currently do. DEAR MR. MYERS: Is it true that the federal government is going to allow apartment renters to start deducting their monthly rent payments on their tax returns? ANSWER: A measure recently introduced on Capitol Hill would do just that, but its chances of passing anytime soon are murky at best. The bill is authored by Rep. Alan Grayson, DFla. It would allow tenants to deduct their rental payments on their federal income-tax returns, much in the same way that homeowners are currently able to write off their annual mortgageinterest charges. Grayson and the measure’s other backers say it would provide

Home decor trends that are losing their luster By Paul Hodgins The Orange County Register
from a Soviet tankassembly plant and drinking your $18 cocktail out of a battered Mason jar on a bartop made out of rough-hewn concrete? So am I. Midcentury modern ideological purity: A lot of people who pursued their midcentury modern passion to the edge of sanity have discovered it causes some vexing problems. Where do I put my keys in a home that’s as smooth and unblemished as the monolith in Kubrick’s “2001"? How practical is a
butterfly roof in a rainstorm? Where’s the private “me corner in an open floor plan? The look is now being blended into a larger, more heterogeneous mosaic, befitting the average person’s multiplicity of tastes. Overdecorated rooms: One reason Tuscan style has peaked in Orange County is the feeling that rooms have become overstuffed with a surfeit of faux-Continental ornaments and froufrou. Some Tuscanstyle homes began to look like sets for
Valentino movies. If there are so many pillows on your couch that people can’t sit down, then you’re overdecorating. Simplicity is making a comeback, but that doesn’t mean you have to resort to a naked Bauhaus box. Just choose your accessories carefully and make sure they’re meaningful. Pasha pillows and cornices that look like they got ripped from the ceiling of some state legislature no longer have a place in the tasteful modern home.
Non-color design schemes: Though it’s popular in tracthome models and spec properties (the idea being that you can’t offend anyone if you don’t choose a color), the white/gray/beige/str aw look gets old mighty fast if you have to live with it. This monochromatic murkiness might be the reason Pantone chose a warm pink and seductive blue as its colors of the year. Recycled wood: This look is still popular in the restaurant and
retail realms, but in the home a little goes a long way, and designers have pushed the envelope too far. Headboards made of untreated, unsanded wood? Better have some tweezers handy for all the splinters. White kitchens: They’ve been hot for several years, but I’ve heard more than one interior designer grumble that she misses colors. Really, your kitchen shouldn’t have to depend on spilled spaghetti sauce to alleviate the visual boredom.

The year is now over a month old, and there’s been plenty of talk about what’s trending in home design for 2016. From black stainless steel to built-in sous vide cookers, unusual choices abound for the fashion-conscious. What about the flip side of the coin? Here’s a look at things that were once must-haves in every trendsetting home but are now _ sometimes thankfully, sometimes inexplicably _ less appealing than that Christmas cake hanging around in the back of your fridge. The information was gleaned accidentally during the course of many interviews over the past few months with interior designers and home-decor retailers. Trendspotting sites such as Houzz are also full of opinions about what’s hot and what’s not. Chalkboard walls: Recently they’ve been everywhere _ offices, wine bars, your neighborhood latte lounge _ but there’s a big problem with chalkboard walls. People can erase the stuff! And anybody with a piece of chalk can, well ... express himself in any way he wants. Let’s keep chalkboards where
they belong: in classrooms (or at least classroom sets for movies depicting the 1950s). Edison bulbs: They’re being sold at Ace Hardware now. I rest my case. Faceted shapes in furniture and home decor: Beloved by modernism-loving designers, mathematicians and fans of M.C. Escher, polyhedrons are giving way to softer, more natural-looking shapes this year. Industrial chic: Tired of sitting on a metal stool that looks like it came
