What a mess. Obviously, it’s going to take several weeks to get the initial ice storm damage cleaned up and it’s likely that the tree care professionals will be backed up for months responding to the demand. From the perspective of the tree’s long-term health, there is no need to rush the cleanup as the damage has already happened. However, safety is still priority number one, so please be aware that there is a lot of broken wood still up in the trees and much of it will be coming down on its own over the next few months, especially on windy days. The most common 3 question . 1- we are getn u ting is “can my tree S be saved?” Unfortunately, this is a subjective question and it involves sev-

eral factors, including overall health of the tree prior to the storm, age, species and location. Location is especially important, not so much for the tree itself, but for adjacent structures or infrastructure that would be damaged if or when the tree fails. Other save/remove considerations include: • What percentage of the canopy was lost? 25 percent of canopy loss is not too bad but anything approaching 50 percent or beyond would tend to favor removal, all other things being equal. • After the tree is cleaned up, is it still somewhat balanced? If a tree loses an entire side,

Eventually, these trees will look OK but it would be very helpful to remember to have a few follow-up visits by your arborist over the next few years so they can do corrective pruning while the new growth is still
