enough room for their six grandchildren to romp outside. “I was walking on the trail, as I do every day, and I said, ‘Frank, there’s a property,’ “ she says. “It was single-story. We could build an art studio and have property for our family. We really wanted a place you could be for sack races and croquet.” With an enlarged, heated patio with its own fireplace; an outdoor barbecue and kitchen area; and a new beach replacing a tired bulkhead, all in the backyard alone, opportunities for

outdoor play are boundless – as is the view. “From inside, it looks like infinity, from the lawn to water,” Judith says. Also inside: a new bunkroom just for playedout rompers. One wall scooched in to “make this room real long,” she says. “We can put four grandkids in here.” And they can put even more art in the adjacent hallway, leading to the studio. “When we got this all going, we thought this could really become a true gallery space,” Judith says. Really, it’s all true gallery space.

four times to get it right.” The artsy glass barn doors to Frank’s new office are “functional as well as a design element,” says Judith. “I had seen this glass artist in Bellevue. He did a drawing, and I wanted abstract. I turned it upside-down. It looked to me like skies and trees and lake. He said, ‘Well, OK.’ “ Judith has an artful way of seeing potential. She and Frank used to live “right up the lake,” she says, in a three-story Bauhaus-style home that was “right on the water with no land.” Meaning: nowhere near ar

work, and we worked with her pretty carefully to make sure all the art would fit,” says Luchsinger. In the central living area, under a 12-foot-tall ceiling, he says, “We got rid of the columns for fin walls, raised the floor up, added a new fireplace and leveled out the floor. It’s just a great backdrop for art.” Judith created the meaningful collage above the double-sided fireplace – it’s called “Memories and Dreams” – specifically for this spot. “It’s all photographs of houses we’ve lived in with our family,” she says. “I did it

forms. The original home was built on a grid, with a sunken living room and columns. The house was kind of International Style with a Northwest slant.” Retaining that essence, but not necessarily its program, “The remodel included creating an open floor plan ... along with living-space updates [and] ... modern materials and subtle artistic accents,” he says. (Judith and Frank did leave some areas “as is,” though: two “legacy bathrooms,” she says. “They’re really fun. We wanted to keep the flavor.”) Smaller-picture, there were a lot of paintings, sculptures and art pieces to incorporate. “Judith did the interior-design

LAKE SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Judith’s art studio is new, and skillfully used. Aesthetically, it is colorful, energetic and inspiring, brimming with creativity and creations. Structurally, it is the light-all-around, ground-floor core of a new two-story addition (there’s a cool, contemporary accessory dwelling unit up above), linked by a glassy new breezeway to the striking white, newly remodeled Lake Sammamish home Judith shares with her husband, Frank. Totally – as in “taken together” and “really, truly” – all that newness adds up to an exquisite, legitimate gallery: of art Judith has made; of

art she and Frank have collected; and of elevated, educated, artistic design. Johan Luchsinger, the second architect from Baylis Architects to work on this home (his colleague Brian Brand designed the original in 1990), has a degree in fine arts. “I did printmaking, etching and metal sculpture,” he says. Judith, a contemporary artist who is creating “mixed-media work on canvas and paper right now,” plus books, has a degree in interior design. No wonder Baylis calls this “The House of ArtFULL Living.” Big-picture, the big update “treaded lightly on the existing,” Luchsinger says. “The idea of this was real simple

Don’t play with your food, but be sure to have some fun with your plates. There is no reason to pick one favorite dish set when you can use them all. We love to play with different textures and patterns to create displays full of energy and depth. Whether it is mixing traditional porcelain with funky tin accent plates or layering plaid and stripes, it is OK to try new combinations. a table, it is mixing traditional antiques with my newest finds. It is a nostalgic nod to the “old” and a beautiful way of mixing (and matching) family traditions and making them your own. Textile layering. With all this talk about mixing and matching, we can’t forget about textile layering. As a fabric fanatic, whenever I hear a customer saying she needs to spice up her tabletop, my thoughts immediately go to textiles. The perfect place to start is with a table cover. A show-stopping tablecloth can make a world of different in adding excitement to a table. One of our go-to table hacks is using a throw blanket as a table covering. It adds all the color and texture you desire and is easy to throw in the watching machine afterward (be

sure to check the care instructions first). If you have an extra-long table for the holidays, try overlapping two runners _ you can hide the center meeting point with a beautiful centerpiece. Or, mix things up and run multiple runners the width of your table, acting more as placemats for two place settings across from each other. I love using wooden platforms for height or woven mats to add a natural element. If I’m feeling extra elegant, I like to add a touch of beaded sparkle as a base for each place setting. Another place to mix things up: your napkins. We love to use hand towels between chargers and dinner plates as a larger napkin alternative for guests and top off place settings with traditional

napkins for display. Stylish seating. While not technically on the tabletop, seating is still an important part of a meal. We like to use pillows and throw blankets to add comfort and style to our chairs. These items are easy to switch out for different seasons or holidays to complement your tablescapes. You can even tie elements from your tabletop to your chairs with ribbon to finish off your look. One of my favorite touches is the classic small

boxwood wreath tied with ribbon and topped off with a sweet bow. And of course, we love to make a statement with the chairs themselves, dressing our tables up with impactful host and hostess chairs. As much as we love decorating our tabletops, what’s most important is the people with whom you share your table. I hope this season is full of good food and good times with people you love, around a table you’ve had fun dressing up.

Even better than brand new! These owners have invested money, time and effort into making this fantastic home even better. The floor plan offers 4 nice sized bedrooms, all on the main level. The kitchen is open with tons of cabinet space and a huge granite island. There are wood floors throughout most of the main floor. There is a wonderful home office area off of the kitchen as well. Upstairs is a bonus or movie room with a full bath. The yard has been professionally landscaped all with irrigation. The back patio is oversized and is covered with a rough cedar pergola with a permanent brick/rock fireplace and hearth. If safety in a storm is your concern, there is an in-ground storm shelter accessible through the garage. This home has it all and been exceptionally well cared for and it shows.

Tons of curb appeal and vintage charm welcome you to this well maintained, 3 bedroom/2 bath home. Located one block from a park and playground, this home’s large lot with mature trees gives both shade and privacy. Newer carpet, paint, and glass slider make this home move-in ready. How can I boost productivity in my home office? By Diana Crandall, Angie’s List

Working remotely has its perks, but it can also present unique challenges to stay on task and move full steam ahead. If you feel held back from reaching your potential on the job, consider upgrading hidden components of your home office to increase productivity and put your best foot forward.

plants here and there, take it a step further by installing a green wall. A handyman or carpenter can safely attach the fixture to weight-bearing studs; all you have to supply is a green thumb.

Conceal clutter

Few of us work best in “organized chaos.” In fact, a messy workspace can devastate productivity. Multiple studies and data Plants points suggest that Fresh foliage does disorganized desks more than brighten and office spaces are the source of things up in your workspace. on the computer or all over the floor.

Install new flooring You might have wall-to-wall carpeting in your house, or maybe you have tile or stone. In any case, your home office should be a comfortable working space. So, whether it’s soft carpet or laminate that puts you in the zone, it’s worth it to take the extra step and upgrade your flooring. The cost of installation will depend on how large your space is and the material you choose.

white walls, or maybe you’re most productive with a few pops of bright color throughout your space. Whatever you’ve chosen, consider taking it a step further. Candles or oil diffusers with invigorating smells like lemon or peppermint can boost energy, promote concentration and improve clear thinking. Also consider using your space to your advantage; a chalkboard wall creates a perfect excuse to brainstorm without leaving the room. A professional painter can complete a job like this in a day or two, including any prep needed to protect your drywall.

Invest in new lighting Think about when you feel the best at work: Is it a summer morning with the window open? How about an overcast winter afternoon when the light is “cooler” in temperature? While some experts suggest the latter promotes alertness, it’s up to you to identify when you feel best at work and replicate that lighting. “Day bulbs” in your lamps can brighten up your late afternoons; anti-glare ceiling lights can reduce stress levels. Just be sure to consult an electrician if you’re installing

anything beyond a new bulb – it’s extremely dangerous to DIY this type of work. And hiring a professional will go a long way in ensuring the safety of your family and home.
