in a classic pattern like plaid brought out the feeling of “home” we want when we walk into a space. Our last step was bringing in plenty of art to help soften the tall and intimidating walls. We went with a variety of pieces that ranged from black and white abstract to whimsical illustrations. We didn’t need to take art selection too seriously, we had so many fun pieces to mix and match and play with. A gallery wall can truly give a room its own personality, can’t it? accents I knew we had to work them in. From the rust-colored blankets to the bright persimmon touches in the kitchen, the color truly breathed fresh life into the house. We especially had a good time with color in the extra bedroom we converted into a sweet and cheery nursery. Alongside our amazing bedding team, we brought in some of my favorite patterns (I’m looking at you, plaid and animal print). Mixing in a fun print like leopard throughout the living spaces and adding zebra chairs to the master bedroom helped create a space with personality. Bringing

A lot of the mirrors, tables and chairs we brought in had wooden or light leather elements to enhance the reach of the natural elements. To not overwhelm the minimalist space, we decided to keep the big pieces in a neutral palette with whites, grays and browns. The Christmas decor was subtle as well, featuring muted gold, taupe and cream woven through lush greenery. That’s not to say we didn’t have some fun with color – I can’t resist a pop of brightness. The home was designed in a modern industrial style and features plenty of metal accents and dark features that gave the house a sharp edge I knew we would need to soften. What also caught my eye was the lovely light wood ceiling that brought an unexpected natural element. This was an important feature since I knew we would be able to pull out the warmth of the wood tones and spread them throughout the

a few at a time (over several years) so the forest can slowly adjust to the change. Since threat of fire is often one of the primary reasons for redcedar removal, you might also consider limbing up and/or selectively removing some branches on the redcedars that are left in place. This can help
to slow the spread should a fire get started while still helping the other plants adjust to the changing conditions. Be prepared for some unexpected changes as the landscape adjusts to the redcedar removal. There can easily be a short-term increase in erosion as open
ground is suddenly exposed to direct rainfall. Also, expect a surprising surge in growth in some vegetation once more sunlight is available. This might or might not be a good thing depending on your goals, just be ready for it and plan accordingly. For more information on this or any

The Payne County Extension Office typically receives several calls a year from clients wishing to renovate acreage overwhelmed with redcedar trees. Our advice is dependent on a variety of factors, including of course, the primary intended use of the land. Since this is a landscape/ gardening column, here are some helpful suggestions from that perspective with the primary goal being removal of the redcedars while protecting the health of the remaining forest. Every situation is different, but let’s assume that the property in question is typical. In other words, it has a large number of redcedar trees of differing sizes growing throughout a mixed stand of other species. In Payne County, the most dominant species will likely be oaks. This is an important point because oak trees do not do well when their root system is compromised, either by direct damage or indirect damage brought on by compaction or changing the existing surface grade. There are two takeaways from the Fed’s recent statement and the forecasts made by private-sector housing analysts. The first is that, if you’re a homeowner who hasn’t already refinanced at today’s near-record low mortgage rates, you should probably do so soon. Second, those who hope to buy their first home in 2020 better start getting their ducks in a row now, before those low rates have a chance to disappear and home prices rise even further.

Rates on 30-year fixed mortgages averaged about 3.5% over the course of this year, thanks largely to a series of quarter-point reductions made by the rate-setting Federal Reserve Board. Those cuts helped the economy to keep growing while keeping inflation in check. After its most recent meeting, though, the Fed issued a statement suggesting that it is now comfortable with the economy’s current health and that no further cuts should be needed soon. The statement even raised the spec-

The first will be to decide whether LGBTQ people are a “protected class” under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which banned discrimination based on sex, race, religion and certain other factors. If the high court broadens the definition of a person’s sex to include his or her sexual orientation, lesbians and gays soon could have the same federal anti-discrimination safeguards in the workplace and housing market that other protected groups do. The other highly anticipated decision will determine whether homeless people can – under certain circumstances – live on sidewalks, in parks and other public places without fear of being
Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, December 13, 2019
The nation’s housing market should remain steady next year, with sales roughly matching 2019 levels and prices eking out another modest gain. DEAR DAVE: I read a story recently that said that the housing market is going to crash next year. What do you think? ANSWER: A few gloom-and-doomers are grabbing headlines by predicting a housing meltdown within the next 12 months, but it’s not very likely. Nationwide home sales should remain steady in 2020 and prices should rise modestly, most economists say, as mortgage-interest rates stay low – at least, in the first half of the year – while the economy stays healthy and inflation remains under control. As the end of the year draws neigh, it’s time to answer readers’ questions about how the housing market will likely fare in the year ahead.

Pogue, Angie’s List
Add extra protection around areas of heat loss. Place thicker treatments over your windows and use heavy drapes to keep the cold out more effectively than curtains. It’s also a good idea to open curtains on south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home. Use fabric snakes to block drafts underneath doors. In a pinch, you can cut a pool noodle
in half lengthwise and slide it beneath your door. Wrap it in fabric to add some style! Also, if you have tile or hardwood floors, lay down rugs or floor coverings to insulate against the chill. Move large furniture away from exterior walls and make sure vents are clear to allow air to circulate. Perform routine maintenance on your home. Change your air filter regularly; this step
alone can lower your energy usage by 10 percent. And check the weather stripping and seals around your doors and windows. Even a small gap in the seals can make a big difference in your comfort. Think of how alternate methods of heating around the house can help. Obviously, a fireplace is an excellent heating source, but when the fire’s not burning, make sure you keep the
damper closed. Add caulking around the hearth and check the seal on the flue damper to make it as snug as possible. Another idea is to use your oven and stove for cooking; not only will they add heat to the rooms, hot meals will keep you cozy as well! Check the insulation in your attic and walls, and hire a professional if necessary to improve the situation. An under-insulated
attic will make a big difference in your heating bills. Also make sure that your basement is properly sealed and caulked. Unsealed basements allow cold air to infiltrate the home and push warm air out of the living space. Consider using landscaping elements to improve your comfort. Windbreaks to the north, west and east sides of your home can block the cold winter wind.

comfort and relaxation that comes with the rich red hues, soft plaids and fresh wood tones is something that resonates even here on the plains. The colors in this Christmas display are deep and traditional, with dark crimson and fresh
winter greens that pair perfectly with birch branches and ornaments to create a stunning, woodsy atmosphere. Adding in some unique items like snowshoes or antique-inspired wooden skis rounds out the theme and creates a visual feast.

The holidays are such a magical time of year. I used to think the sparkle and thrill would wear off with age, but I could not have been more wrong. Of course, the season has changed
over the years, from the anticipation of Santa coming to my house as a young child to the nostalgia I felt coming back to visit my family during my young adult years and now having the chance to create lasting memories for my own
