It’s OK for most city, county or homeowner’s association officials to limit how much you can decorate outside of your home. DEAR DAVE: Is it legal for a community to limit the amount of holiday lights and other decorations that we put on our front lawns this time of year? ANSWER: Yes, as long as those limitations are reasonable. Many communities across the nation now have ordinances that impose restrictions on holiday decorations, especially if they’re particularly bright or include recorded sounds affects so loud that they keep neighbors up at night. Some homeowners have been cited because their extravagant displays drew too many people from other areas, creating traffic and parking problems throughout the block. People who live in condominiums, townhomes or other places that are governed by a homeowners association often face even more restrictions. For example, the association’s rules might not let an owner put decorations on an HOAowned lawn because

KEITH REED them out after a year or two. For very small seedlings, let’s say less than 1/2” in diameter, digging is very simple. Just insert a spade around the tree, creating a circle about the size of a large coffee can. Once the circle is complete, reinsert the shovel to full depth and pop the seedling out of the ground. If you can keep the soil ball intact, it is helpful but not critical. Replant it in the new location taking care to plant it no deeper than it was originally growing. Water it thoroughly to settle the soil and mulch it well. If we fail to get measurable amounts of winter precipitation, water the seedling

Back in October, we talked about tagging small seedling trees that have come up uninvited in the landscape for later transplanting. Now that those trees have settled into dormancy, it is a good time for transplanting. If you missed that column, the idea is that we often have unwanted seedlings come up in flower beds or other landscaped areas. These are trees that would be welcome in other parts of the landscape, just not where they are currently growing. Experimenting with moving these seedlings can be a fun learning experience so it’s a great time to get children involved. Know going in that the success rate for doing this can vary widely depending on species, soil type, technique and weather; it’s a good idea to transplant more than you think you can use. If they do all survive, it’s easy enough to thin

Raising the bar this holiday season By Katie Laughridge Tribune News Service

Holidays bring the most wonderful hosting opportunities. I find such joy in putting together the perfect table and decking my halls to the fullest in anticipation of my nearest and dearest joining me for some festive fun. However, as I prepped for my hostess duties this year I was reminded of an area that is highly trafficked but sometimes neglected: the bar. I spend so much time

thinking about my dishes and decor that sometimes I tend to play it safe with my beverage selection. Not this year! To take my bar to the next level I knew I would need some guidance. So I picked out a few of my favorite glassware pieces and called out for professional help. Luckily, just a short drive away from us is a cocktail destination with all the style, skill and delicious sips I needed to take my entertaining to the next level.

The Campground, located in Kansas City, Mo., is where I go when I want a well-balanced and beautiful classic cocktail. Owner Cristin and her co-owner/ husband, Chris, have created a fun and unique space, and I am in love with their antique glassware. I love finding places with their own sense of style and point of view. Walking into Campground, the first impression is of a dark, moody and hip bar that is campy in every

sense of the word. From the taxidermy pieces scattered about (all currently decked out in Christmas finery) to the statement-making bronzed bar, it is a fun balance of nature and machine. A surprising amount of traditional elements and vintage accents also adorn the space. I knew they would be the perfect pair to help me craft three delicious (and feasible) cocktails to complement my chosen glasses. With all the beautiful glassware, I

10 tips to get organized By Cathy Hobbs

Clear the clutter! More than ever before, people are opting for minimalism instead of overstuffed and cluttered homes. From items purchased on a vacation to treasured mementos and those that have been gifted, the accumulation of items may be what is standing in the way of you creating a more organized home. Closets should be organized and not just used for storage, ditto for kitchen pantry areas and shelving. Bookcases can become organized showcases for home decor.

Here are some design tricks of the trade that can also help organize your space. 1. Follow the A-B-C organization rule. Assemble items you want to organize. Create a system for storing these items in baskets, boxes and bins. Consider containers and cartons for organizing as well. 2. Label. Labeling is a key organization tip. One of the best solutions is to use erasable labels. 3. Color code. Color coding will help items be more easily identified. 4. Hide the small stuff. Often

it is not the large items that cause disorganization, but the smaller items that less easily have homes. Store small similar items together. 5. Create both open and hidden storage. Shelves work great for displaying books and small decorative items, but you will also want to have closed, hidden storage as well for those items you don’t wish to be visible. 6. Follow the one in, one out rule. When you get a new item, discard or donate an older, outdated similar item. 7. Inventory.

So often, items are boxed away in an attic or basement never to be seen or heard from again. A minimum of once a year, take inventory of what you have, what you need and what you can toss. 8. Minimize. Ask yourself: “Do I really still need this?” Typically if you haven’t used it in a year, the answer is no. 9. Use clear storage solutions. Clear bins and containers allow you to be able to see what you have and actually use what’s inside. 10. Purge! Each season, get rid of something that can go to a new home.

first had to narrow down my selection. To anyone but decor lovers, picking out glassware before deciding on the cocktail menu might seem backwards, but not only is it a fun challenge, it is a visual feast. I knew I wanted a variety of different drink options for my guests that also paired well with my decor. With this in mind, I went with a 1920s-inspired gold-accented coupette glass for a bit of holiday glamour, a visually interesting but simple glass mug (hot cocktails are the best this time of year!) and an intricate goblet that is stunning in any setting. For the coupette glass, Chris created a twist on one of

my all-time favorite cocktails, the French 75. The addition of vermouth adds an earthy touch that was a missing piece to the already amazing drink. Since this is a cocktail that was created during World War I and popular during the 1920s and ‘30s, it fits in with our chosen glass perfectly. This light and refreshing drink is easy to make but made me feel like a bartending pro. Anything topped with sparkling wine is a winner in my eyes. I could not wait to see what he would suggest for our glass mug, and I was not disappointed. I love curling up with a hot beverage by my fireplace, with my favorite candle

and book for a bit of relaxation and the mulled wine Chris created had that warm and cozy feeling all in one glass. If the spices, aroma and gorgeous deep burgundy color weren’t enough to make this my favorite, that you can batch it out ahead of time sealed the deal. Our last cocktail creation was a sherry cobbler, and was by far the prettiest cocktail we made. It’s almost like an adult snow cone with a mountain of ice resting on a lovely mauve base. The gorgeous color truly allows the details on the glass to shine. This is another cocktail that is able to be made ahead of time, which is great for when you are busy hosting.

Architectural opportunity knocks more than once for this Seattle couple spatially and spiritually – smoothly connects the living and dining areas in a great room of great impact. “My advantage in helping them is that we’re friends,” says Prentiss. “I’ve been with them when they’re entertaining. I knew to eliminate bottlenecks.” Wicher and Penn also wanted “a really clean look,” so, says Wicher, “Virtually any space has storage” (including a cleverly hidden cookbook nook, designed by Prentiss Balance Wickline architect Brian Watzin – who had not worked on the home next door – in one end of the kitchen cabinetry). They also wanted everything not in storage to shine. “Family is important to us,” says Wicher (visitors get to pick their preferred upper-level

guest room: mountain view or lake view). “So are travel and art. It’s not highly valuable, but it’s meaningful. That had to be incorporated.” Adds Penn: “Places were designed for specific pieces _ things that have memories and meaning.” The Buddha in the living area belonged to Penn’s grandmother; a table was his mother’s. The clock in the hallway had been Wicher’s great-grandparents’. There’s a painting from Bali, and two vases the couple picked up in Venice. Penn’s grandmother’s settee sits at the top of the stairway. Oh. That stairway. It’s a woodand-glass work of art itself – slim and solid and geometric – and behind it: a fantastic, massive

plan, it’s important to create separate spaces that still flow together for a cohesive look, so I knew we were about to have some fun. The home was designed in a modern industrial style and features plenty of metal accents and dark features that gave the house a sharp edge I knew we would need to soften. What also caught my eye was the lovely light wood ceiling that brought an unexpected natural element. This was an important feature since I knew

we would be able to pull out the warmth of the wood tones and spread them throughout the home with the addition of wood and leather mirrors, tables and chairs. A lot of the mirrors, tables and chairs we brought in had wooden or light leather elements to enhance the reach of the natural elements. To not overwhelm the minimalist space, we decided to keep the big pieces in a neutral palette with whites, grays and browns. The Christmas

decor was subtle as well, featuring muted gold, taupe and cream woven through lush greenery. That’s not to say we didn’t have some fun with color _ I can’t resist a pop of brightness. We had so many beautiful orange accents I knew we had to work them in. From the rust-colored blankets to the bright persimmon touches in the kitchen, the color truly breathed fresh life into the house. We especially had a good time with color in the extra bedroom we converted

into a sweet and cheery nursery. Alongside our amazing bedding team, we brought in some of my favorite patterns (I’m looking at you, plaid and animal print). Mixing in a fun print like leopard throughout the living spaces and adding zebra chairs to the master bedroom helped create a space with personality. Bringing in a classic pattern like plaid brought out the feeling of “home” we want when we walk into a space. Our last step

with the new year approaching. Candles are a great gift simply on their own or paired with a no-fuss candle holder, cute matches and candle extinguisher. There are so many scents to pick from, and who doesn’t enjoy an amazing smelling home? Candles also complement a variety of other potential presents. I love pairing cabernet and champagne scents with bar glasses and accessories to create a scrumptious bar cart bundle. When it comes to dog lovers, I always try to remember Fido as well. Most of my dog loving friends buy

more presents for their pup than they do for themselves. Designer dog bowls, like the blue and white chinoiserie ones we have,

are my go-to. They are more than just a spot for your pups to eat and drink – they really add to a home’s decor. Throw blankets are another gift that keeps on giving. Can you ever have too many cozy blankets? We use throws for everything from decor accents to tabletop covers and I am always finding new ones I just have to have. Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, December 20, 2019

December is finally here! While we have been talking about the holidays for quite some time, it’s now setting in that there are only a few short days left until Christmas morning. With that comes the rush to get the perfect gifts for family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, party hostesses and whoever else you run into during this festive season. Now to decide what to get them. Every year it gets harder and harder to play Santa for those I care about. Luckily I have a few go-to items

that are easy to pick out, won’t break the bank and are universally loved. One item I find myself gifting quite often is the versatile coffee table book. No matter who I am buying for or what the occasion, there is always a beautiful book on a topic the recipient will love. Visually pleasing and perfectly practical, the right book is the perfect accessory for a living room and a great conversation starter. I feel like coffee table books are having a revival right now. The photography and writing are so well done I find myself displaying some of mine

was bringing in plenty of art to help soften the tall and intimidating walls. We went with a variety of pieces that ranged from black and white abstract to whimsical illustrations. We didn’t need to take art selection too seriously, we had so many fun pieces to mix and match and play with. A gallery wall can truly give a room its own personality, can’t it?
