in going beyond the common, consider trying the paperbark maple or a red or yellow twigged dogwood. These trees (the dogwoods tending more towards shrubs) require some careful site selection and a little help to be successful, but the effort is worth it. The next time you visit the Botanic Garden at OSU, be sure and ask someone to point out the paperbark maple, one of the garden’s best kept secrets. Also look for fruit that hangs on well into the winter. The female deciduous holly probably sets the standard here, at least for a red berry. The deciduous holly is a tough plant and easy to grow, but it does require some occasional pruning to keep it from getting out of hand. It is important to plant both the male and female plants in the same area to ensure good pollination and thus good berry set. This often neglected shrub lights up a snow covered landscape like few
these plants. These few examples don’t even begin to scratch the surface for interesting plant options. The idea here is to get out and look closely at the landscape and try to see things from a little different perspective. There is a very

Many of us tend to think of the plants in our landscapes only in the context of green and growing. This is certainly understandable; however, there is something to be said for what a plant looks like the rest of the year. Many plants have redeeming ornamental value even when they are not actively growing. Here are a few ideas for you to keep in mind as you begin to dream and plan your landscape for next year. What does the bark look like? Consider the crape myrtle, grown in Oklahoma primarily for its fabulous summer flowering characteristics. As this plant matures, a beautiful pattern develops in smooth bark on the larger limbs. Careful pruning over time can accentuate this feature. These plants also look fabulous with well-done outdoor lighting. The Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa showcases this plant just outside their main entry door, making a very dramatic statement for the visitor. Similarly, the lacebark elm and the river birch are two common trees in our area that really show off when their bark is fully exposed. For the gardener interested

their own sense of style and point of view. Walking into Campground, the first impression is of a dark, moody and hip bar that is campy in every sense of the word. From the taxidermy pieces scattered about (all currently decked out in Christmas finery) to the statement-making bronzed bar, it is a fun balance of nature and machine. A surprising amount of traditional elements and vintage accents also adorn the space. I knew they would be the perfect pair to help me craft three delicious (and feasible) cocktails to complement my chosen glasses. With all the beautiful glassware, I
first had to narrow down my selection. To anyone but decor lovers, picking out glassware before deciding on the cocktail menu might seem backwards, but not only is it a fun challenge, it is a visual feast. I knew I wanted a variety of different drink options for my guests that also paired well with my decor. With this in mind, I went with a 1920s-inspired gold-accented coupette glass for a bit of holiday glamour, a visually interesting but simple glass mug (hot cocktails are the best this time of year!) and an intricate goblet that is stunning in any setting. For the coupette
glass, Chris created a twist on one of my all-time favorite cocktails, the French 75. The addition of vermouth adds an earthy touch that was a missing piece to the already amazing drink. Since this is a cocktail that was created during World War I and popular during the 1920s and ‘30s, it fits in with our chosen glass perfectly. This light and refreshing drink is easy to make but made me feel like a bartending pro. Anything topped with sparkling wine is a winner in my eyes. I could not wait to see what he would suggest for our glass mug, and I was not disappoint-

and texture. Headboards Often headboards work in a space because of space-saving needs. If you decide to use a headboard, this typically means pairing it with a metal frame. Metal frames can be unsightly, so you will want to make sure it is properly concealed. The best way to do this is with a proper bed skirt or bed skirt panels. Bed skirts can be box pleated for a more modern
look or ruffled for a more traditional appearance. To ensure you cover the frame, the longer the drop the better. As an alternative, many designers opt to use bed skirt panels, which are four separate panels that are pinned or tacked along each edge of a mattress. Layering your top of bed If you are looking for a luxurious plush bed, layering is the key. A popular
technique used by designers involves layering a bed in the following order (bottom to top): • Mattress • Feather bed (if a softer bed is desired) • Mattress cover • Bottom fitted sheet • Top sheet • Coverlet or blanket • Duvet cover (with duvet insert inside) • Throw and toss pillows to add a decorative touch

Illinois landlords latest group to grapple with new marijuana laws About Real Estate DAVID MYERS states already approve its use for medical purposes, and Cannabis Business Times magazine (www.cannabisbusinesstimes.com) reports that as many as 11 more states will either vote to legalize recreational use in 2020 or take initial steps in that direction. I last wrote about the headaches that legalizing marijuana is causing landlords about 18 months ago. It’s one thing for someone to use pot in a single-family home that they own; it’s quite another when smoke, whether from tobacco or nontobacco sources, can easily waft into a neighbor’s unit on the other side of an adjoining wall, or if kids playing in a development’s common areas come in contact with the fumes. Attorneys at the National Association of Realtors admit that landlords can’t prohibit the use of medical or recreational marijuana
*** DEAR DAVE: We have had our current mortgage for four years. Our bank has always sent us a printed monthly mortgage statement, and we have always mailed the payment back within a few days. But last month, we never got the statement and subsequently failed to get our payment out before the deadline. Now the bank wants to charge us a $105 late fee. Is this legal, considering that it’s the bank’s fault we weren’t notified that the payment
was due? ANSWER: Sorry, but the lender has the right to charge a late fee even though you didn’t receive your usual notice that the monthly payment was due. Every mortgage contract includes a provision that allows the lender to charge a penalty if a payment isn’t received by its due date. But the contracts rarely require the bank to send out a monthly statement, although some do so as a courtesy to their borrowers. Several lenders over the past few years have stopped mailing out paper statements to cut
costs, while others are relying solely on the internet to send out monthly reminders. Your letter suggests that you have a good payment history, so you should contact your bank’s customer service department immediately and ask if it will remove last month’s late payment from your record and waive the $105 penalty. Many lenders will provide a one-time waiver for customers with solid payment records like yours, but other borrowers can’t expect such a favor if they have made other late payments in the past.

Like rental-property owners in many other states, investors in the Land of Lincoln must now figure out how to deal with tenants in the wake of a new state law that legalizes recreational use of cannabis. DEAR DAVE: I inherited an eightunit apartment building outside of Chicago about two years ago and have always kept a strict “no smoking, no illegal drugs” policy there. But now, a law allowing recreational use of marijuana in Illinois will take effect on Jan. 1. Does this mean that I will have to allow my tenants to smoke dope in their individual units? ANSWER: Not necessarily. Though you will no longer be able to prohibit your tenants from using marijuana, you can probably insist that that they get their high by eating potlaced brownies or other edibles, using oils, or getting mellow by other means than smoking. With the addition of Illinois, recreational use of marijuana will now be legal in 11 states and the District of Columbia in 2020. Thirty-three

Minnesota rambler transformed by designer with budget-friendly style By Kim Palmer
Winship said. He added Ikea cabinets in glossy white and quartz countertops in pale gray. He transformed the adjacent breezeway into a pantry by adding Ikea cabinets there, too. Out of scale When it came to furnishings and artwork, the couple had to start almost from scratch. Most of what they already owned was the wrong scale for the 2,100-squarefoot rambler. “We had smaller rooms” in the Minneapolis house, Winship said. “All our art was narrow and vertical. Here, we have bigger walls and need wider art.” So they sold much of their stuff on Craigslist and started fresh. Winship appreciates collector-quality midcentury modern pieces – but not their price tags. His home’s furniture includes several iconic pieces associated with big names, such as Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chairs, Castiglioni’s Arco lamp and Saarinen’s tulip table. But Winship’s pieces aren’t the real deal _ they’re budget-friendly knockoffs.
“I won’t pass up a bargain,” Winship said. Familiar to TV viewers from his days on “Decorating Cents,” the HGTV show that featured makeovers on limited budgets, Winship is no stranger to stretching design dollars. “Everything I do is tempered by cost vs. desire,” he said. “We want to spend our money on other things _ like travel.” Besides, a house filled with serious pieces is too, well, serious for Winship. “Some homes are Gucci this and Eames that. I like to be a little lighter with it,” he said. Adding to the levity is his whimsical, playful taste in artwork _ everything from a print showcasing a Brigitte Bardot look-alike in a bikini, to vintage Russian cigarette ads that he found at an estate sale, to a retro painting of an anonymous young girl. “I call her Cousin Martha,” he said. “I love ‘50s portraiture _ I like the colors.” Photos from the couple’s travels and fabrics also play a prominent role in their home’s decor. “Fabrics do a thing for me,” Winship said. “I like to
collect stuff,” such as Guatemalan textiles and a sheer white fabric with a sketch-like pattern that he brought back from Mexico and turned into drapes. Designing a home for himself and his husband was a much different experience from designing for a client. “It’s much freer,” he said. “I’m not as serious. Nothing seems too big a deal. There’s a responsibility of dealing with someone
else’s home, trying to get what they love.” And that’s his design philosophy – surrounding yourself with things you love. “Figure out what brings you joy,” he said. “For me, it’s color, beautiful things, funny things and things I bring back from travels,” then combining them to create “warmth and wit ... a home that feels so good that you’re happier and more productive.”

else’s home.” As a bonus, on gray winter days, the metallic surface reflects light and brightens up the space. “We’re so light-challenged here” in Minnesota, he said. “That gold wall is fantastic.” Winship also loves bold color. The formerly all-white living room is now a breezy turquoise, set off by a teal velvet sofa and that Lucite coffee table. The kitchen, formerly beige, is now painted chartreuse. Strauss gives his spouse free rein _ almost _ when it comes to their home. “John lets me do anything I want,” said Winship. “Except pink.” The rambler’s kitchen and master bathroom were due for more than a new paint job. The bathroom, an addition in the 1960s, was “falling off the house,” Winship said, and had to be gutted and completely renovated. The kitchen, meanwhile, was seriously short on storage. There were two metal carts on either side of the stove that were used for storage, “but it was hard to get at anything,”
