December 30, 2016 In 2017, the U.S. real estate market will be in the middle of two massive demographic waves. Millennials and baby boomers, the two largest American generations in history, are both approaching life stages that typically motivate people to buy a home: marriage, having children, retirement, and becoming empty nesters.

Extending the vegetable gardening season
A2
Stillwater NewsPress • Friday, December 30, 2016
2016 turned out to be a very long gardening season with most of Payne County not receiving our first significant freeze until November 18th. And had we managed to avoid that one night, we could have stretched our season out another week or two at least. The same idea holds true for spring gardening. Our temperatures generally warm up enough to allow for earlier planting, or at least they would if we did not get those last few random freezing days. As long time gardeners can attest, those late freezes can sneak in with little notice, wiping out several weeks of garden progress. If producing
Home Grown KEITH REED vegetables earlier and later into the season appeals to you, consider installing some lowcost protection in the form of a modified cold frame. These structures, also known as hoop houses, high tunnels, and row covers, can vary in design but all do essentially the same thing. They create a modified environment that stays warm enough to protect the plants from all but the most severe cold weather events.
These structures can be made from a variety of materials including pvc pipe, cattle panels, wood, and galvanized tubing. The outer covering is simply clear plastic sheeting. In other words, these structures can be put together relatively inexpensively. Keep in mind that spending a little extra money initially can save in the long run with maximizing the time the plastic can be used as the primary goal. For Oklahoma
winds, 6 mil polyethylene plastic film is recommended. For maximum life, make sure the film is coated for UV resistance. Also take care to store the plastic out of the sunlight when it is not on the structure. Before incorporating one of these
structures into your gardening operation, it is important to consider a major factor. There will be the need to “babysit” once the tender garden plants are up and growing. These structures heat up very quickly on sunny days, and if they
are not opened and closed in a timely manner, you can lose crops from too much heat as easily as too much cold. If you cannot commit to being in the garden daily (sometimes multiple times a day), these season extenders are not for you.
OSU Fact Sheet #HLA-6720 High Tunnels is a good resource to study when considering this idea. The Noble Foundation in Ardmore has also done extensive work using high tunnels. Their information can be found at noble.org.

that should face south. Remember, a cactus can’t move itself to adjust to exposure change like an ordinary non-succulent plant. It can’t drop foliage where there’s insufficient sun or grow new stems and leaves once properly exposed again. They don’t speak as loudly in the silent language of plants, which is why gardeners often fail to recognize this preference. Cactuses do not orient quickly. While we can turn a house plant so foliage will respond to the new light source, a cactus cannot move itself at all. Therefore, it’s very important to establish the pri-
mary direction of your cacti and keep them so oriented for their entire life. Know the original orientation whenever you’re relocating a potted cactus or transplanting one for any reason. Before moving the pot, note its previous orientation and the side where light originates. To help you remember, mark it on the pot with a Sharpie. That mark must face the same orientation (south) no matter where the pot goes. Anytime you move that plant to clean or reorganize, take a minute to ensure it’s replaced with the exact same orientation This is equally

important when transplanting cactus. Many nursery grown cactuses are raised in lighted greenhouses so they don’t know what south is yet. It begins only after that plant comes into natural sunlight and day length. Once you bring a greenhouse cactus home, establish an orientation that works for you and then keep it that way as the
plant matures. When transplanting cactus from one location to another outdoors in the ground, always mark south on the cactus before you dig it up. It’s easy by tying a piece of yarn securely to the spines. Failing to do so can leave you with no idea how to orient if the plants are stored in between without markers. Be kind to your

Dave’s take on layaway Dear Dave, How do you feel about using layaway programs? – Jay Dear Jay, I’m not a huge fan of layaway plans, because they’re not really the solution to a problem. What’s wrong with just saving up and buying stuff when you have the cash? I mean, Christmas comes at the same time every year, you know? It’s not like it snuck up on you. I know there are rare instances when particular items are on sale, and you can take advantage of it
Dave Says DAVE RAMSEY through layaway if you don’t have the cash at the moment. I don’t really have a problem with that kind of thing in rare instances. But I would not, under any circumstances, use a layaway plan that has fees attached. You might as well borrow the money if you’re going that route. Here’s a good rule of thumb: if
you don’t have the money, you can’t afford it. And make sure you don’t get into the habit of lusting after things you don’t own, because that lack of contentment is always tied to people being broke. Just don’t make plans like this a way of life, Jay. If you do, you’re liable to stay chained to layaway programs just like you’d be chained to
debt! — Dave Credit cards are not an emergency fund Dear Dave, My husband and I are trying to follow your plan. We’ve paid off all of our credit cards, but he still doesn’t want to close the accounts and cut up the cards. Instead, he wants to keep them in a drawer and use them as an emergency fund. He grew up really poor, and I think he’s afraid of being poor again. We both know that’s not what you recommend,
so what can I do to convince him to follow your advice? – Lynn Dear Lynn, I think rather than trying to convince him, it might be a better idea to gently ask questions and talk things through. You said he grew up in poverty. What I’m hearing is that the cards represent a kind of security blanket for him. I can understand that. But if you had $10,000 set aside for emergencies, you’d have the security of knowing that a transmission repair on the car or a new
water heater for the house would only be a minor inconvenience – and you wouldn’t have to go back into debt to make things right again. Explain to him that what you’d like to do is replace the credit cards with your own money. You’d also be replacing what they do with a debit card. Ask him if there’s a reasonable amount you two could have in the bank that would take away his worry and stress. Talk it out, agree on the amount, and then agree that when
you’ve saved up and hit that number, the cards get cut up and the accounts are closed. Just be patient and understanding. Above all, make sure you work together. If he’s recognized the wisdom of getting out of debt and taking control of your finances, he’s moving in the right direction! – Dave Digital subscriptions make staying current easy...

Homeowners perplexed by uninvited holiday ‘visitors’ About Real Estate DAVID MYERS to avoid giving the rodents a “jumping off” point into rain gutters, the roof or small openings that your initial inspection of the exterior didn’t uncover. Install weather strips around entryways, especially under doors, to help keep the little buggers from sneaking inside. Mice and rats have an acute sense of smell, so it’s important to keep any food sealed tightly in plastic bins, metal canisters or other rodent-resistant containers. Otherwise, the vermin may smell the food and break into weaker containers such as plastic or paper bags. Similarly, quickly clean up any spills or leftover crumbs to discourage the unwanted visitors from coming inside for a light snack. The cost of hiring a rodent-control professional to exterminate the pests varies based on a number of factors, including the severity of the infestation and the amount of repairs that you’re willing to make rather than having a pro do the work instead.
machines, not to mention humans. *** DEAR MR. MYERS: What do you know about the big recall of Cuisinart food processors? How do we know if the model we have in our kitchen is affected? ANSWER: Connecticut-based Conair Corp., owner of the Cuisinart line of food processors and other kitchen-related products, announced the recall on Dec. 18. It
covers about eight million of the gadgets that were sold in the U.S. between July 1996 and December 2015, plus another 300,000 sold in Canada during the same time period. The problem is scary. The Federal Consumer Product Safety Commission states that the riveted blades inside the China-made processors can crack over time, and small metal pieces of the blade can break off into
the processed food. Conair confirms that it has received at least 69 reports of consumers finding broken pieces of the blade in their food, including about 30 reports of mouth lacerations or tooth injuries. The recall spans 22 different Cuisinart models. To find out if your processor is one of them, call the company toll-free at 877-339-2534 or visit its website, www.cuisinart.com.

Everybody loves Mickey and Minnie, but no one wants to live with their relatives. DEAR MR. MYERS: We keep our home spotlessly clean, but lately we have trapped two fairly large rats and several small mice inside our house. Even now, we still can hear that creepy scratching sound that their claws make when they run across our floors late at night or move around inside our cabinets or walls. What’s going on here? How can we fix this problem? ANSWER: Pest-control experts call autumn and winter “rodent season,” as the vermin race indoors to nest as the weather outside gets colder. A rat can sneak through a hole or crack as small as a quarter, and mice can squeeze through one that’s the size of a dime, said John Kane, an entomologist and technical director of pest-control giant Orkin’s Midwest region. To help combat the pests, Kane says you should look for possible entry points outside your home and quickly seal any holes or cracks if they are found. Trim back tree limbs and bushes so they’re at least 3 feet away from exterior walls
