Deals on home goods It’s a great time to buy many types of items for your home, but some other purchases should be delayed for a month or two. DEAR DAVE: You usually write a column on the best deals for home-related products that will be offered on Black Friday weekend and into early December. So, what are the best bargains this year? ANSWER: With the COVID-19 pandemic, many retailers are offering their best prices and sales promotions over the internet, figuring that many consumers don’t want to risk going to jam-packed stores filled with hundreds of strangers. It’s also worth noting that many retailers, large and small alike, have already announced plans to extend their Black Friday sales prices into the first or even second week of December to boost what has been nearly a year of sluggish sales. As in most recent years, you can expect to see some of the biggest holiday season discounts on televisions, computers and other big-ticket, home-related products. Unless you insist on having the
latest-and-greatest TV, you can find huge bargains on this year’s sets before most of the newest models are introduced about six weeks from now – albeit digitally – at the Consumer Electronics Show from Las Vegas. It’s also a good time to buy small kitchen appliances, whether you need them for your own home or want to give them as presents. Refrigerators, stoves and other large appliances are also deeply discounted now, but you might be able to save even more money if you can wait until after Christmas – assuming that retailers still have leftover inventory. If you want a new couch, armchair or other indoor furniture, you might want to wait until late January or February. That’s when retailers offer some of their biggest bargains, trying to clear out their stock before new models are released in the spring. ••• REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: Although two-thirds of online shoppers would prefer to buy from traditional brickand-mortar stores, personal finance
ABOUT REAL ESTATE DAVID MYERS website thebalance. com says shoppers make their final decision based on price. It’s easier to compare prices online. ••• DEAR DAVE: Can I deduct the $125 I pay each month to the guy who cuts my lawn and trims my trees on my next federal tax return bill? ANSWER: Probably not. Yard-maintenance costs are among those that the Internal Revenue Service generally considers nondeductible homeownership expenses, just like utility bills, a new roof or plumbing repairs. You may, however, qualify to deduct at least part of the professional gardening expenses if you need to keep the yard looking nice because you work from home and need an inviting place to talk with clients or business-related vendors in your house. Consult with an ac-
countant or similar tax pro for details. ••• DEAR DAVE: What is a “life estate?” ANSWER: It’s a relatively unusual form of holding property through a joint-ownership arrangement. In a life estate, two or more people each have an ownership interest in a property but for different periods of time. In a typical scenario, the person holding the life estate – known as the “life tenant” – possesses the property and can live in it during his or her life. The other owner, called the “remainderman,” has an ownership stake in the home but cannot take possession until the death of the life-estate holder. The life tenant has full control of the property during his or her lifetime and has the legal responsibility to maintain the property as well as the
right to use it, make improvements or to rent it out. To illustrate, a friend of mine recently formed a life estate with his widowed mother who no longer needed the four-bedroom home that my buddy grew up in. The two of them jointly purchased a one-bedroom condominium instead: His mom plans to live there by herself for the rest of her life, and then he’ll inherit her half of the condo after she
passes away. Because the rules surrounding the creation of a life estate can be tricky – including a potential impact on the life tenant’s Medicaid planning – it’s best to consult with an eldercare attorney and estate planner before forging ahead. ••• Our booklet, “Straight Talk about Living Trusts,” explains how even low- and middle-income homeowners can

If you are a regular reader of this column, you know that discussing the use of fireplace ashes in the garden is something we do every fall, and this year was no exception. However, given the overwhelming number of burn piles (and piles yet to be burned) from the recent ice storm, this subject merits mentioning again. Wood ash incorporated into the garden as a soil amendment or sprinkled over the top like a fertilizer will definitely change the chemical properties of the soil, most notably with the addition of potassium as well as increasing the pH. Potassium (K), is always listed as the third number in a commercial fertilizer product. For example, a bag of 20-5-10 contains 10 percent potassium. Potassium is a critical plant nutrient that is required in relatively large amounts by plants. Soils deficient in potassium will not grow healthy plants. However, once an adequate base level of potassium is provided, additional increases will not provide additional benefit to the plants. Wood ash influence on soil pH is

lower graduation rates for students in those groups, who typically need to work long hours while also in school and hence engage less with both the academic and nonacademic aspects of college. But they also reflect significantly lower post-graduation incomes for such students, due in no small part to continuing social and racial wage gaps in the labor market. Black men with a bachelor’s degree make, on average, more than 20% less than white men with the same education and experience, though that wage gap is smaller for women. And first-generation graduates typically make 10% less than students whose parents graduated from college. A second moral concern is that student debt is increasingly causing
widespread distress and constraining life choices in significant ways. Consider that even before the pandemic, 20% of student borrowers were behind on their payments, and first-generation borrowers and borrowers of color are struggling even more. The financial distress indicated by this high rate of delinquency is undermining both the physical and mental health of young adults. It prevents young adults from starting families, purchasing cars, renting or buying their own homes and even starting new businesses. Unsurprisingly, these negative effects are disproportionately experienced by first-generation, low-income and Black student borrowers, whose life choices are especially restricted by the need to make loan payments.

Historically, nonprofits have gotten nearly a third of their charitable donations just during the month of December. However, many nonprofits are facing economic trouble. Organizations serving Black, Indigenous and other people of color are especially struggling, as COVID-19 has taken a disproportionate toll on these communities, making their needs greater. However, funding for organizations led by, and serving, people of color lags behind that for white-led organizations. This disparity is exacerbating the funding gap for those hit hardest

The number of children who experienced food insecurity in 2020 grew from 11.2 million to an estimated 17 million – nearly 1 in 4 American kids. But nonprofits will no doubt keep struggling to make do in 2021.

birds, like ferruginous pygmy owls, that fly low to the ground. Australia’s dingo fences, built to protect livestock from the nation’s iconic canines, are among the world’s longest manmade structures, stretching thousands of kilometers each. These fences have started ecological chain reactions called trophic cascades that have affected an entire continent’s ecology. The absence of dingoes, a top predator, from one side of the fence means that populations of prey species like kangaroos can explode, causing categorical shifts in plant composition and even depleting the soil of nutrients. On either side of the fence there now are two distinct “ecological universes.”
Our review shows that fences affect ecosystems at every scale, leading to cascades of change that may, in the worst cases, culminate in what some conservation biologists have described as total “ecological meltdown.” But this peril often is overlooked. To demonstrate this point, we looked more closely at the western U.S., which is known for huge open spaces but also is the homeland of barbed wire fencing. Do less harm Fences clearly are here to stay. As fence ecology develops into a discipline, its practitioners should consider the complex roles fences play in human social, economic and political systems. Even now, however, there is enough evidence to identify
actions that could reduce their harmful impacts. There are many ways to change fence design and construction without affecting their functionality. For example, in Wyoming and Montana, federal land managers have experimented with wildlife-friendly designs that allow species like pronghorn antelope to pass through fences with fewer obstacles and injuries. This kind of modification shows great promise for wildlife and may produce broader ecological benefits. Another option is aligning fences along natural ecological boundaries, like watercourses or topographical features. This approach can help minimize their effects on ecosystems at low cost.
