Ice storm debris vs. lawn care If the appearance of your summer lawn is important, here are a couple of things to consider if you still have ice storm debris piled up. For those of you with tall fescue or other shade grasses, you should move your debris pile to a new location soon. Since these grasses do not go truly dormant in the winter, they still need a little bit of sunlight and air movement to stay healthy, even if they do not appear to be growing. If you piled your debris up right after the storm, you may already have some yellowing of the turf. • Note: if you don’t know what kind of grass you have, if it has any green in it at all right now, it’s either tall fescue or a similar species such as Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, or a blend of these. For this discussion, it doesn’t especially matter which one it is as they are all considered shade species. You’ll also see these grasses referred to as cool season grasses and we will often use the terms shade and cool season interchangeably. Another concern (of all turf species) has to do with timing of your early herbicide applica-

This is especially pertinent for those of you that pay professionals to care for your lawn as they will soon begin their spring rounds so they can accommodate all their clients before key dates. Obviously, a dense pile of limbs will prevent a proper application of herbicide, creating an opportunity for weeds to gain a foothold. Also, a key part of successful weed control is maintaining a healthy turfgrass stand. Weeds love to move into a thin stand of turfgrass, no matter what led to the thinning. The herbicide applications professionals will be making soon usually involve a combination of products. These include preemergents (products designed to prevent weeds from coming up) and postemergents (designed to kill weeds that are already up). Many weeds you don’t notice until the weather warms are already up

Founded in 2011, SimpleNexus is one of the fastest-growing technology companies in North America. Company President Cathleen Schreiner Gates credits 2020’s four consecutive quarters of record-setting revenue growth to rapid, enthusiastic adoption of SimpleNexus’ solutions by banks, credit unions and independent mortgage lenders across the United States. The capital infusion from Insight Partners will help SimpleNexus maintain this growth trajectory as it continues to transform the mortgage industry by seamlessly connecting the homeownership journey. “SimpleNexus is systematically tearing down the technology barriers that gave the mortgage process a reputation for being disjointed, arduous and slow,” Schreiner Gates said. “First, we created a best-in-class mobile toolset that delivers hundreds of thousands of lender referrals each year by bringing together consumers, real estate agents and loan officers from the point of thought. Then we perfected the loan application with features like our mobile mortgage disclosures, which empowers borrowers to fin-

Since so many things are digital, making purchases online has been the norm, so being able to track spending is essential,” Liu says. He keeps tabs on his expenses, investments and net worth. Like so many other COVID castaways, Liu says he is saving money on transportation due to less commuting

ADJUST YOUR RETIREMENT SAVINGS Consider increasing and diversifying your retirement contributions. After you take full advantage of any available company match in a 401(k) or 403(b), look into funding a Roth IRA. If your income is too high to make a direct Roth contribution – the ability to contribute starts to phase out at modified adjusted gross income of $140,000 for singles and $208,000 for married filing jointly – you could consider converting a portion of an existing traditional IRA. Home ‘flipping’ activity dips but profits soar Though sales of short-term housing investments have dropped, gross profits have reached record highs. DEAR DAVE: For the past few years, several investors have bought homes in our area, fixed them up and then sold them within a matter of months. Now that activity has really slowed down. Is this happening across the country or is it just happening here? ANSWER: It’s a nationwide trend. ATTOM Data Solutions (www. attomdata.com), which tracks home “flipping” activity and other real estate trends, recently reported that flips accounted for just 5.1% -- or one of every 20 -- real estate transactions in the third quarter of this year, the latest data available.
