Consider the following Tips for your February landscape. If you have not been out in your yard recently, take a close look if you have an accumulation of leaves. Tall fescue lawns can deteriorate when these leaves become matted down. While it is not crucial to remove all the leaves, at least rake them around so the turfgrass can get some air and a bit of light. February is the time to control those pesky winter weeds. Herbicide control is much more effective if an application can be made before explosive spring growth occurs. See OSU Fact Sheet HLA-6601 Broadleaf Weed Control for Weeds in Oklahoma and Fact Sheet HLA-6421 Controlling Weeds in Home Lawns. As always, remember that all pesticides are only effective if used properly. Always follow label directions and do not hesitate to call the Payne County Extension office if you have questions concerning proper use. Winter tree pruning should be completed as soon as possible. February is NOT the time to prune most shrubs. Spring flowering shrubs such as flowering quince, forsythia, winter honeysuckle, and winter jasmine all bloom on last year’s growth. Wait until these plants have completed their spring flowering before pruning

See Fact Sheet HLA-6004 Oklahoma Garden Planning Guide. Perennial garden crops such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, asparagus and grapes should also be planted towards the end of the month. While blueberries and raspberries can be grown successfully in our area, Payne County is far from their ideal climate so you can expect some challenges.

Cool items unveiled at consumer electronics show The giant Consumer Electronics Show was held online this year, but it didn’t keep big manufacturers from debuting their latest innovative products. DEAR DAVE: As a longtime reader of your column, I know that you usually go to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas each January and then write about some of the coolest new home-related products that you saw. Did you go to the show this year? ANSWER: Well, sort of. It was held entirely online in mid-January because the COVID-19 pandemic essentially prevents large public gatherings, forcing the 170,000-plus speakers, exhibitors and visitors who would usually converge on Sin City at the start of the year to take to the internet instead. Some of the new products that were showcased during the four-day online event are already available, while others won’t be offered until several months from now. Both Samsung Group and LG Electronics introduced refrigerators featuring the latest in artificial intelligence. They have video screens built into their exterior doors to display your favorite recipes or family photos, but a touch of a button lets you see what’s inside without opening the fridge and letting the cold air out. The two companies are also perfecting a sys-
tem that lets interior cameras scan what’s inside and can then let you know what items you’re short on, even making meal suggestions based on the ingredients that you still have. Of course, there was the usual gaggle of flat-screen televisions featuring all of the latest bells and whistles. LG showed off its new “smart bed,” which includes a 55-inch retractable TV screen that rises up out of the bed’s frame when the user wants to watch a show or ballgame. Many of the new products were designed with COVID19 in mind. “Touchless” appliances were all over the place: Kohler Co. and TotoUSA introduced new lines of sinks and toilets that can be operated without touching any handles or knobs and can even be set up to obey voice commands. Alarm.com unveiled a touchless doorbell which automatically rings when someone approaches the door. With an estimated 39 million Americans now working at least part-time from home and millions more “distance learning” there, several companies trotted out new products to make the experience more comfortable. Chairmaking giant Future Seating showcased its new X-Chair, which it boldly touted as “the most technologically ergonomic office chair in the world.” Beyond its numerous highly
ABOUT REAL ESTATE DAVID MYERS adjustable features to make sitting for long stretches easier on your body, you can spend an extra $100 or so to add built-in massage and heating systems to relax your muscles. Of course, there’s always cleaning to be done. That’s why several manufacturers rolled out new types of robot vacuums that glide across carpets and floors without being pushed by a human. Many consumer reporters were particularly impressed by Samsung’s JetBot 90 AI+ robotic vacuum, which not only unloads its own bin but also uses lasers and cameras to navigate the floor so it doesn’t miss a spot or suck up something that it shouldn’t. •••
REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: The decision to hold CES completely online this year robbed Las Vegas of the nearly $170 million in direct spending that it generated in 2020 and its broader local economic impact of $291 million, according to the city’s Convention and Visitors Authority. Some hotel rooms that rented for upward of $400 a night during last year’s confab were advertised for less than $45 a night during this year’s all-digital affair. ••• DEAR DAVE: We are getting worried about our neighbor’s big tree, which looks like it’s dying and about to fall on our house. If it does, will our homeowners insurance policy pay for
the damage? ANSWER: It depends. The nonprofit Insurance Information Institute (www. iii.org) says that if the tree damages your home, a homeowners insurance policy may help cover the cost of repairing your house as well as removing the fallen tree branches. But if the tree fell without causing damage to a structure to your home or other property, insurance likely won’t cover the cost of removing the debris or even the cost of repairing your home’s roof. Call your insurance company or agent for details. ••• DEAR DAVE: I bought my first home two months ago, and my finances are pretty tight. I thought that I was going to get a $600 payment through the federal government’s second economic “stimulus package,” but it hasn’t arrived yet. I am getting nervous because my property

taxes are coming due soon, and I might not have the money to pay them. What gives? ANSWER: The U.S. Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service proudly proclaim that they have issued more than 100 million payments to help American homeowners and renters meet their housing bills and other expenses since December. Most of the payments were automatically deposited to the recipient’s bank account, but it takes longer for those who must instead be paid by a paper check or prepaid debit card. Eligible single tax

I’m writing this between my daughter’s diaper changes, bottle breaks and naps, as well as my own weepy fits of anxiety and despair. Our day care closed because of a COVID-19 case, so our baby gets to gurgle at my husband and me as we stare at our computers – tense shoulders at ears – and attempt to work. The very last thing I want to do is think about my finances. I’m sure I’m not alone. Money is a major source of stress for many people, and who needs more stress right now? After nearly a year of the pandemic, you may already be wading through desperation, loneliness, grief, exhaustion or, of course, fear. “The stress is compounded by the fact that you might actually die,” says Brad Klontz, certified financial planner, psychologist and author of “Money Mammoth.” “A ridiculous amount of stressors has fallen on everybody.” Cue good old avoidance. That’s my go-to – just don’t deal with the thing that’s making you pull out your hair. But avoiding money issues

makes them worse. And if you’re like the many, many people who’ve taken a financial hit, you can’t afford to let your situation get much worse. TALK IT OUT Now that we’re all thoroughly depressed, here’s a gentle reminder from Klontz: “You might feel alone, but you’re not.” In fact, he adds, “chances are your friends are sitting there feeling exactly the same way.” So reach out to a trusted friend or family member about what’s stressing you out. You may not get solutions, but you’ll likely feel better after venting and getting some commiseration. And your friend may be grateful to learn that you’re open to talking about money issues – they may be weighing on them, too.
To keep each other safe, you’ll probably have to jump on the phone or a video call, or bundle up for a February stroll. But try it anyway. “In the midst of stress, the worst thing you can possibly do is socially isolate,” Klontz says. “That is a recipe for depression.” LIST NOW, HANDLE LATER To start fixing money problems, you first have to face them – but not all at once and right this second. That’s a reminder for those who obsess, rather than avoid. “There are two ways people handle their money in extreme situations,” says certified financial planner Pamela Capalad. “It’s either all they think about and look at, or they completely ignore it and hope it works
