mote-work postings surged from 4% to nearly 16%. For mental health therapists, they rose from 1% to nearly 7%. Such shifts could, in turn, trigger changes in where people live and affect the varying economic health of metro areas. Some highly skilled workers could migrate from high-cost coastal cities, where they had clustered in the decade after the Great Recession, to more affordable cities or small towns. Downtown offices could shrink and exist mainly for collaborative work. The tax revenue of large cities could tumble as fewer workers patronize downtown bars, restaurants and coffee shops. “The pandemic has broken the social and cultural norms for how we work,” said Timothy Golden, a professor

of management at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. “Remote work has become much more accepted.” Ford is just the latest company to allow more work from home after the pandemic. Salesforce, Facebook, Google and other tech firms have said they’ll continue workfrom-home policies indefinitely. Target Corp. will leave one of four downtown Minneapolis office locations because it’s moving to a hybrid model for 3,500 workers. It will keep other downtown offices. Flexible remote work is hardly an equal opportunity perk. It is disproportionately concentrated among more educated, well-paid workers. The jobs of lesser-paid employees generally require on-site work or face-to-face contact with the public.

More than onethird of Asian employees and a quarter of whites worked from home because of the pandemic in January, according to an analysis of government data by the Conference Board, a business research group. Just 19% of Black workers and 14% of Hispanics were able to do so. Ford has found over the past year that employees and supervisors believe that more work can

be done remotely, that they can still connect with each other and that they have the means to do their jobs, said Kiersten Robinson, chief people and employee experiences officer. So when its hybrid schedule begins in July or soon thereafter, Ford will give teams a choice of when to come to the office. Robinson said a flexible schedule will also help Ford compete for talent.

The share of Indeed’s job postings that mention “remote work” or “work from home” reached 7% last month, up from just below 3% a year ago. But in some industries, the gains were far more dramatic, including those that haven’t traditionally welcomed remote work. In legal services, for example, remote-work postings for jobs including paralegals and legal assistants jumped from under 5% in the second half of 2019 to 16% in the second half of 2020, according to Indeed data. The Family Handyman says snow mold is a cold-season fungus that causes gray-colored circles or patches on the lawn where there has been snow. To alleviate snow mold, rake the lawn to loosen matted grass and facilitate the drying-out process. De-thatch the lawn. Heavy snow can compress the grass and cause some of it to die off. De-thatching helps to remove dead grass blades and separate any matting. This enables water, nutrients and air to reach the lawn’s roots more effectively. Thinning out old organic matter also helps encourage new

growth. Aerate the soil. Coupled with dethatching, aeration involves loosening the soil or poking holes to allow nutrients to move freely to the roots. Kill weeds before they spread. Weeds may be the first to start growing when

Pristine, snow-covered landscapes can be wonders to behold. While that blanket of white is idyllic, a lawn’s delicate blades may be paying a hefty price beneath the cold, heavy piles of snow. Snow plows push salt and sand up on the grass while subterranean animals like mice and moles dig burrows beneath piles of snow as they try to find food and stay warm. Such conditions are not favorable for thriving landscapes. When the spring thaw arrives, lawns may be in dire need of some TLC. The following techniques can mitigate winter-related lawn damage. Clear out debris. Remove any scattered leaves, branches and other debris that has been strewn across

Plant selections for privacy screens Last week, we talked about some of the factors to consider when choosing plants for screening purposes. Here’s the promised follow-up for some specific plants that should work well for most of Payne County. As in all landscape situations, micro-climates can vary dramatically across our area. There is always a chance some of these will perform better than others on your site. Broadleaf evergreen selections include: American Holly Ilex opaca. This medium sized tree is slower growing than most people prefer but does well once it becomes established. A beautiful plant. Nellie R. Stevens Holly Ilex x ‘Nellie R. Stevens’. Medium to fast grower. This is usually grown as a large shrub instead of a small tree. This plant has been known to die back to the ground in extremely cold winters, so it does best with some protection. (If it does die back, it will quickly regrow) Chinese Holly Ilex cornuta. The straight species of southern magnolia will get too big for most screen applications. However, there are many cultivars on the market that work well. Look for ‘Little Gem’, ‘D.D. Blanchard’, ‘Alta’, ‘Hasse,’ as well as others. Southern Waxmyrtle Myrica cerifera. This very large shrub can get out of control in smaller landscapes but works well with plenty of space. This is another plant that can suffer in our coldest winters so it does best when protected from north winds. Leatherleaf Viburnum. Viburnum rhtidophyllum. This

attempted. However, there are improved cultivars on the market. The needle-like group is difficult to work with because they tend to be somewhat finicky when it comes to moisture needs (especially winter and poor drainage) and are plagued with a variety of pest issues. Plants in this grouping are also subject to being heavily pruned to appear more desirable in their retail setting. Take the time to

read the label carefully to see how big the plants will be when mature. Also, check to make sure the plants are winter-hardy down to zone 7, or zone 6 if they will be in a location exposed to north winds. This is far from an inclusive list, but it should at least get you started in the right direction. As we talked about last week, think long and hard before committing the time, money and resources into a screen planting of just any single one of

this group of plants. Diversity is your friend when it comes to a successful longterm plant screen. For more information on this or any other horticultural topic, you can contact Keith Reed, the Horticulture Educator in the Payne County Extension office. Keith can be reached via email at keith.reed@okstate.edu, phone at 405-747-8320, or in person at the Payne County Extension office, located at 315 W. 6th in Stillwater.

increasingly difficult and painful to climb the stairs inside our two-story home. We don’t want to sell and move to a one-story home, so we have been thinking of buying one of those electric stair lifts to get up and down between our two floors. How much do stair lifts cost? ANSWER: It depends on a variety of factors. Would the chair be traveling up and down in a straight line, or does the stairway curve? Would it need to be able to go outside to, say, access a sec-

ond-floor deck or balcony? Do you want a basic model or one with special add-ons or higher weight capacity? That said, experts at lift retailer 101mobility.com say you should expect to spend between $2,000 and $5,000 (including installation) for a chair that would maneuver a straight staircase with 12 to 14 steps. Prices for those that can negotiate a curved stairway start at about $10,000. Figure on spending between $5,000 and $7,000 for a weather-resistant exterior chair to use

on a straight staircase and at least $12,000 for an outdoor lift that would need to curve. You can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars by purchasing one of the refurbished, pre-owned chairs that many mobility companies offer. Homeowners who need a stairlift only for a relatively short period of time -- for example, while recovering from a broken leg or hip surgery -usually can rent a system for between $250 and $500 a month.

DEAR DAVE: We recently signed a contract to purchase a home. The boilerplate form also included a lengthy addendum that dealt with potential delays that could be caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Is this type of addendum now required by state law? ANSWER: No, but many brokerage firms and state real estate trade associations are recommending that such addendums be included in contracts for realty transactions today to provide some extra legal protection for salespeople and their clients alike. Most of the addendums automatically extend a deal’s closing date without penalty if a delay is caused by a pandemic-fueled shortage of appraisers, inspectors or other real estate pros needed to complete a sale. Many people want to remain in their homes after they retire rather than move to a senior living facility or community. Unfortunately, most homes aren’t set up to help us age safely and affordably. If your goal is to “age in place,” some advance preparation could help make that possible -- or point to better alternatives. “Somewhere in your 50s, hopefully, you’re starting to think seriously about are you going to be able to stay in the house you’re in? Or are you going to need to make changes?” says DeDe Jones , a certified financial planne r in Denver. CONSIDER WHAT YOU NEED TO CHANGE Start by thinking about how you would live in your home if you had less mobility, less energy and potentially less money. Unexpected expenses for major home repairs or upgrades were the

most commonly reported financial shocks experienced by retirees, according to a 2015 study by the Society of Actuaries. Those big-ticket costs can be devastating on a fixed income. The society recommends a home inspection before retirement so you can identify and budget for those costs. But you also could schedule some of the expensive stuff -replacing a roof, for instance, or upgrading the heat and air conditioning system -- while you’re still working. Likewise, investments in energy efficiency could help you avoid big bills when you’re less able to afford them. Adding insulation, installing a smart thermostat and choosing energy-efficient appliances can help. In sunnier climates, solar panels can dramatically reduce your energy costs. Consider upkeep, as well. You might want to replace a labor-intensive grass yard and planting beds with lower-maintenance

landscaping. You could swap out siding that needs to be painted every few years with a more durable option, such as vinyl, fiber cement or modified wood. Decluttering can make your place easier to navigate and to clean. BUILD YOUR EQUITY You may still face big bills or have trouble making ends meet in retirement. In that case, your home’s equity could be helpful. You could access your home’s value by selling it, using a reverse mortgage or getting a home equity line of credit. But you can’t tap equity you don’t have. In 2016, 46% of homeowners age 65 to 79 still had mortgage debt, according to Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. The median balance owed was $77,000. A mortgage in retirement isn’t ideal for many people, financial planners say. Few people get much if any tax benefit from their mortgages, and having to make the payments

can cause people to deplete their retirement savings more rapidly. Planners say you shouldn’t prioritize paying off your mortgage over saving for retirement and for emergencies. And you probably shouldn’t take money from retirement funds to pay off a mortgage. But once you’re on track with your savings goals, you could make extra principal payments to pay down the loan more rapidly. You also can avoid having a mortgage in retirement by opting for shorter loans when you refinance. If you’re 50, for example, you might choose a 15year loan over one that lasts 30 years. ASSESS ACCESSIBILITY Consider incorporating accessibility features into any planned renovations. Grab bars in bathrooms, lever-style handles on doors and faucets, and rocker-style light switches (preferably accessible from a wheelchair) are relatively lowcost upgrades, for

example. Costlier changes include widening doorways and hallways, adding a curbless shower, installing nonslip flooring and creating a zero-step entry. Ideally, your home would have just one level, but a home with stairs can work if it has a bedroom and full bath on the entry level. If that’s your situation, you could focus your renovations on making those spaces accessible rather than trying to remake your whole house. Sometimes there’s simply too much that needs to be done or your home

has features you can’t affordably modify. Even if you think you can manage a bunch of stairs or a home that’s far from your neighbors, your living situation could worry your loved ones, Jones notes. “Moving might give you the chance to live closer to your support system,” she says. “Makes it easier on them, makes it easier on you.” Certified financial planner Melissa Brennan of Plano, Texas, says she and her husband are at least a decade away from retirement and still have two teenagers at home.

But they recently traded a two-story, four-bedroom, fourbath home on an oversized lot for a smaller, one-story house with tiled floors and a wheelchair-accessible bathroom. Brennan said they were mindful of the problems their parents had navigating their houses as they aged, and the bigger house was already seeming like more of a burden than a blessing. “We don’t want to spend the rest of our lives maintaining this ginormous house that we don’t need,” Brennan says.
