Organize your pantry with a five-step makeover By Aisha Sultan

We confront it everyday, morning and night, for one of our most basic needs – the search for food. If your pantry is a mess, it can bookend your day in frustration. Fortunately, it’s also one of the quickest organization projects that offers one of the biggest returns in improved efficiency and peace of mind. We turned to two professional organizers to makeover two different types of kitchen pantries. The first one, a floor-to-ceiling cabinet with six pull-out shelves was my very own challenge. The second, a closet pantry combined with a mudroom, was a neighbor’s. It took about an hour to complete the cabinet pantry, and it took two organizers about two hours to make over the larger one. Each one, however, followed the same basic steps: 1. Assess your needs. Take note of what works about your pantry. Then, list the things that make you crazy about it. Lisa Bianco, director of marketing for the National Association of Professional Organizers St. Louis chapter and
owner of Perfectly Organized in O’Fallon, Mo., says she starts every project with a conversation with the client about how often the items in the pantry are used and by whom. The stuff that gets used every day needs to stay near the middle. The things that children help themselves to should be within their reach. The less often an item is used, the higher or lower up it can live. Gretchen Bender, owner of Creative Spaces Organizing in St. Louis, says the first question she asks is: What is your goal? “A lot of time people have the space, but they don’t know what to do with it. They just see a series of shelves.” The organizer starts envisioning what can be grouped together, taken out and added to improve the functionality. 2. Empty it out. The next step is to empty out the entire pantry. It sounds daunting, but it’s truly the only way to get a handle on everything that is hidden there. People will often discover they own multiples of the same product or have a backlog of expired foods. “If you don’t see it, you won’t use it,” Bianco said. We discovered several
unopened bottles of vitamins and supplements that had been purchased with good intentions but lost in the recesses of the pantry. 3. Sort into categories. The next step is to group like items. Bianco brought a few storage containers in which she grouped all the protein bars, and fruit and nut bars roaming around. She created a section for snacks, one for breakfast items, pasta and dinner, spices, grains/rice and an entire shelf for baking. 4. Toss the excess and expired. First, you purge, Bianco said. Get rid of things that are stale or expired. I threw out some year-old granola and half a package of stale shortbread cookies. (I don’t even like shortbread cookies.) We also tossed the Tupperware that was missing lids and consolidated things into empty jars that kept turning up. Taking note of the redundancy in the pantry can help cut down future costs. “It can be a money saver,” Bender said. Think about the money wasted on food that gets thrown away, excess items and impulse buys. It can help with menu planning
to keep a grocery list on the inside door of the pantry and make a note of things you needs before you shop for the week’s meals. 5. Put the puzzle back together. In the case of both the pantries our organizers worked on, they added a few storage baskets that grouped together certain items, such as teas, spices or lentils. In my pantry, Bianco added Lazy Susans for soup cans. She also added labels on each shelf as a reminder for everyone who uses the pantry. Bianco moved the largest box of cereal to a middle shelf where our children could reach it more easily. She grouped it with the oatmeal and other breakfast foods. She also suggested tearing the loose box tops off of boxes to make the overall space appear cleaner. For shelves that don’t pull out, it’s important to use the vertical space, so everything is within eye level. This may require buying a few tiered shelves, she said. She added two small containers, two medium ones and two Lazy Susans, all from Target, which cost about $35 in total. In the closet pantry, they added
a few more storage containers for a total cost around $45. In both cases, they played with a few different ways of putting the contents back together. “It’s like putting together a puzzle,” Bianco said. Some
pieces fit better in different configurations and it takes a little bit of trial and error. A pantry project is a good start for those who want to become more organized, Bianco said. “It doesn’t take as long. It gets you
motivated and lets you feel successful.” In less than an afternoon and less than $50 in supplies, you can make enough tweaks in an area of the house you use every day to have a significant impact on the rest of your day.

A few helpul hints on how to prevent weeds in your lawn this spring Even though it’s cold and gloomy right now, we will all have a dose of spring fever very soon. With warmer weather will come an avalanche of promotional and advertising materials offering dozens and dozens of different combinations of fertilizer and weed control products. At the top of that list are products offering crabgrass control. The choices can be overwhelming. This information should help you increase your chances for successful weed control this season. We talk a lot about timing when it comes to crabgrass. That is because the key to good control is having a preemergent herbicide in place (and activated) before the weed tries to germinate. Activated means having the product watered in properly. When you read the label, you will see that it states clearly how soon after application the product must be watered in (this applies for liquid applications as well as granular products). Even if you have your lawn treated by professionals, I suggest

If you are using a granular, don’t be too concerned if they don’t fully dissolve. The actual granules are often just corncob or other inert material used as a carrier for the herbicide. Back to the timing issue, two factors are key. The first is the soil temperature as crabgrass germinates when the soil reaches 55 degrees. The second is the last freeze. A freeze is the best crabgrass control going as it will readily kill all crabgrass. Mother nature has a couple of very visible bio indicators to help us with soil temperature. As the common spring flowering plants forsythia and redbud begin to pass their peak flowering period, you can be assured the crabgrass will be coming on soon. To
ballpark a calendar date, I would suggest having the materials in place by March the 15th. Please remember, if you are late with your herbicide application, applying “a little extra” is not going to help. If this is the case, your best control option is to use a product containing the active ingredient dithiopyr to control those small early emerging weeds. And as always, PLEASE make sure you read the label and follow the directions carefully when using these products. This naturally occurring microorganism is present in the soil and helps peas utilize atmospheric nitrogen, but it takes time to accumulate in your soil to benefit such a short-term crop. Add inoculant at planting time and
you speed the process, which leads to much heavier yields and healthier plants naturally. Inoculant is usually offered for about $5 where you find pea seed displayed in garden centers and online or print catalogs. Catalogs carry many more different varieties of edible podded peas than you can find locally. The primary differences among snow peas are pod size and disease resistance. Oregon Sugar Pod II and Oregon Giant produce snow pea pods to over 4 inches long and 1 inch wide. Big vigor-
ous vines produce larger yields, and these two are resistant to a variety of diseases, which makes them better for humid regions. Varieties like Avalanche yield smaller, perhaps more tender pods that are better-suited for small city gardens. Each variety has its unique characteristics, so read the detailed descriptions before ordering. There are many heirloom varieties, such as Amish Snap or Golden Sweet snow peas, from India. Look for dwarf forms that make better choices for Earth
Box and smaller raised beds. Peas require 60 to 75 days to mature. Sow your snow peas in full sun to prevent mildew on the foliage and protect from wind. Provide a simple fine trellis of twine, net or woven wire fence so they climb vertically and demand little space in the ground. Mulch the root zone when temperatures rise to keep the soil evenly moist for longer harvest. Once your peas begin to produce, pick every day to prevent pods from forming pea seed inside so new flower buds are encouraged to form.

Dear Sidney: You’re not alone in wanting to make your home work better for people who use wheelchairs, walkers, crutches or have other special needs. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 1 in 5 Americans has some kind of disability. The cost to add an outdoor ramp and railing will depend on a variety of factors, but it can start at around $500. If space is too limited for a concrete or wooden ramp, another option would be a vertical platform that lifts and lowers. These cost from $6,000 to $10,000. Service providers who can help you with this kind of work include handymen, carpenters and general contractors. However, for a more detailed or comprehensive look at how
you can make your home more accessible to disabled people, you might appreciate the expertise of a contractor who is a certified aging-in-place specialist (CAPS). Contractors who hold this designation, which originated with the National Association of Home Builders, the AARP and other organizations, take classes to learn best practices for retrofitting or remodeling a home to meet an individual’s needs throughout senior adulthood. Certified aging-inplace specialists can review your home and recommend minor or major adjustments. Projects can range in cost from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. Meanwhile, there are guidelines that can help you or a professional assess your home’s accessibility. For instance, while private residences generally aren’t required to comply with federal Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines, most contractors follow those standards when making adjustments to a home. For example, wheelchair widths vary, often making
it difficult to maneuver from one room to another. ADA guidelines require that public doorways be 34 inches wide. Using this standard as a residential guideline ensures that wheelchairs can pass freely through doorways. Depending on the location, widening a doorway can cost from $500 to $1,000. Besides handrails, other common accessibility adjustments include adding grab bars to a tub or shower, converting a tub or shower so it’s wheelchair-accessible, raising the height of a toilet and adding grab bars and adding doorway threshold ramps. In addition, it’s a good idea to make simple adjustments, such as moving items to lower cabinets for easier reach and removing thick floor coverings that can hamper wheelchairs or walkers. When hiring any contractor, remember to confirm any claimed credentials, as well as insurance, bonding and any required licensing. Consider only companies that have positive reviews on a trusted online site, and be sure to get all pertinent project details in writing.

Picking the right color palette for your spaces can allow you to do mighty things. Here’s an example: I worked with a customer who wanted to visually connect her adjoining kitchen and family room. Her kitchen island was turquoise, accented with citrine, and her family room had gray furnishings she wanted to enliven with blues. So we
pulled together a palette that brought these colors together. The navy toile, with its touch of citrine and turquoise, pulled in the kitchen hues and added some zip to the gray furniture. We banded the pillows in the solid citrine fabric. Then we did a solid turquoise pillow trimmed in a great Greek key. A playful blue cheetah print in another accent pillow finished it off with a fun flourish. How far you go with your color palette is up to you. Some people love
lots of bright colors blended together. Others like to keep their color palette limited and play with variations on just a few tones, like navy and cream or black and white.
