New tankless water heaters use hot technology By Ed Del Grande Tribune News Service
Q: Hi Ed, we’re building a new home and I want a natural gas or propane tankless water heater. I also want a recirculating hot water system in my home for quicker hot water. Do they make gas-fired tankless water heaters that can re circulate hot water? – Fred, Idaho A: Like the name says, tankless

water heaters have no water storage tanks. Water is heated right away as it passes through the unit. This has a couple
advantages. First, there is no stored tank water to keep heating up all day. Second, tankless units can supply a constant stream of
hot water, since there is no tank to empty. This makes for a very convenient way to heat and use domestic water.
Smart technology allows for new gasfired ultra-style tankless units with built-in pumps to add the option of recirculating your
home’s hot water. Recirculation gets hot water quickly to your plumbing fixtures with less cold water waste going down the
drain. Bottom line: Heating water efficiently while saving water at the same time sounds like a tankless job to me.

Try an old-style tub for new bathroom By Ed Del Grande Tribune News Service
Q: Dear Ed: We’re building a new master bathroom and my wife wants a freestanding castiron bath, like the old claw foot tubs. I have been checking the Internet and it’s getting a little confusing. Plus, I really would like to see some tubs in person
to help decide. Can you please point me in the right direction with some thoughts on choosing a traditional-type tub? – John, Ohio A: I receive a lot of questions on traditional cast-iron tubs. The choosing process can be hazy because of all the design variations out there. So, I like to break down the choices to three basic cate-
gories. Once you know the type of freestanding cast-iron tub you like, focusing on that one category. Here are three basic types: 1. Actual refinished vintage baths. These are very old claw foottype tubs that have been refinished. If these tubs could only talk... 2. New copy of a traditional tub. These tubs have copied the older
designs, but they are brand-new fresh from the factory. 3. Modern type freestanding. These are vintage-looking cast-iron tubs with modern design twists. A bottom base in place of feet and a slip-resistant floor lets the past to meet the future. Final note: Even though we’re talking about freestanding tubs, these fixtures can be pricy.

Horticulture tips for April Home Grown KEITH REED that the majority of insects in the landscape are not harmful to plants or people. Monitor your garden and landscape regularly, as insect problems are much easier to address when they are caught early. See OSU publication E-1023 Conserving Beneficial Arthropods in Residential Landscapes for an enlightening look at helpful gardening insects. • Delay planting tender annuals and warm season vegetable crops until danger of frost has passed. Normally, this means about mid-April for Payne County. I know many of you planted early this year. Good luck as you continue to nurture the new seedlings through these remaining cool nights. • Continue to keep a close eye on newly planted material for irrigation needs. Our spring winds can do a lot of damage to a drought stressed plant in a short period of a
time. • Mulching is an important water and weed management tool in our
region. However, mulching this early, especially with a cool spring, can delay the growth of some plants. In some cases, it might be better to postpone this task a few weeks. Call or email the extension office if you are uncertain about which plants might benefit. • The best win-
dow of opportunity for applying herbicides to control pesky broadleaf weeds like henbit and chickweed has effectively closed for this year. Treatment now is not as effective as these weeds have matured and are completing their life cycle. Also, the products used to control these weeds can be a real problem for

As you consider the following tips for your April landscape, also take a look at this very unique opportunity for our area: On April 7th and 8th, the OSU student branch of the American Society of Landscape Architects will be hosting the Finding Center Conference at the Stillwater Community Center. The mission of this conference is to focus on sustainability issues, especially as they relate to our landscapes and built environments. For free registration and details, go to www.findingcenterconference.org. • If you have not already done so, April is a good time to fertilize your cool season turfgrasses like tall fescue. • Delay fertilizing warm season turfgrasses such as bermuda, zoysia, or buffalo until late April or early May. • For apple growers, monitor cedar apple rust on neighboring cedar trees. If you see a significant number of cedar-apple galls (a large orange growth that resembles a Christmas ornament), be prepared to spray your apple trees with an appropriate fungicide. • Insects begin showing up in April. Open shelves are made from scaffolding, while dry goods are hidden behind a linen curtain. The wall above the stove and counter is decorated with displays of old books, antique pottery and small framed landscapes. This unexpected lineup reinforces the unity of kitchen and living room. Building a home in the country is a dream for some of us. We picture an idyllic life surrounded by rich farmland, verdant meadows, a shimmering duck pond, a few friendly farm animals, vegetable gardens, fruit trees and wildflowers -- the wonders of nature sure beat traffic snarls and squished high-rise living. Whether it is your very own newly built country house you are planning, or a century home that you have discovered, each room will have calming views of the outdoors. Decorating such a special place takes some time. If you enjoy following the journey of others who are living this dream, look to some of the coffee table books that detail their plans from design to decoration. “Patina Farm,” by Brooke Giannetti and Steve Giannetti (Gibbs Smith), is a gem. Their supreme attention to every detail in every room is an education in how to blend indoor life with the outside landscape. Their first love is the rich patina of old furnishings, materials and objects. Texture and color blend seamlessly, creating an atmosphere that is easy and ageless. Their guest house

Yet again, home sellers wonder if Saint Joseph will speed a sale Whether the housing market is icecold or red-hot, countless readers through the years have asked if burying a small statue of Saint Joseph in their yard will hasten a deal or perhaps fetch a higher sale price. DEAR MR. MYERS: Do you believe that burying a small statue of Saint Joseph will make a home sell faster? ANSWER: Oh, Lord ... I get asked this question often. It’s usually when sales are slow and sellers are desperate. But this year is different, with mortgage-interest rates low, sales brisk and home prices in most parts of the nation rising. In good markets or bad, though, my response is always the same: Burying a likeness of St. Joe in the yard won’t necessarily bring buyers flocking to your door, but it won’t hurt your marketing chances, either. No one is sure how the practice got started, although many experts trace it back to a group of European nuns in the Middle Ages who are said to have buried a medal of St. Joseph -- the patron

Many who believe in the practice also say that the statue should be planted upside-down, because Joseph will work even harder to find a buyer so he can “right himself” and get out of the dirt. Curbless showers require more labor, money By Angie Hicks Angie’s List
Dear Angie: I want a curbless shower stall for easy access. The contractor says that it involves digging into the concrete and then layering it with some “mud” to position the drain. How do you prevent leaking from a curbless shower? – Meenakshi N., Cary, North Carolina Dear Meenakshi: Curbless showers, sometimes called zero-threshold, add contemporary style to bathrooms and provide an accessible option for those aging in place. However, without the proper slope, these showers will not drain correctly and could lead to
moisture issues later. PROPER DRAINAGE CRITICAL FOR A CURBLESS SHOWER PAN To create the correct slope, the Tile Council of North America handbook says installing curbless showers requires a “depressed slab.” Building this involves cutting out the entire shower floor area in order to pour a shower pan that slopes toward the drain. A curbless shower pan should slope onequarter inch for every foot of shower. Installing a curbless shower on a slab is more complicated than on a floor with wood framing. With concrete slabs, cutting into the floor and moving plumbing
are more complicated and labor-intensive. Because of this, installing a curbless shower on a concrete slab is typically more expensive than on a floor built with wood joists. Some showers may require a second drain just outside the shower to ensure splashed water doesn’t sit on the tile flooring. CREATING A ZERO-THRESHOLD SHOWER WITHOUT CUTTING Some companies avoid cutting into the concrete by building up the bathroom floor everywhere but the shower. This allows them to create the proper slope for the shower. But it also makes a ledge in the bathroom’s doorway, which
could cause stubbed toes or tripping. Either way, the high point of the floor must be located outside the shower. “The location of the high point of the floor is especially critical when a secondary drain is not included outside the shower area,” the TCNA handbook says. WATERPROOFING CURBLESS SHOWERS Floors and walls should be waterproof inside the curbless shower and at least one foot beyond it. This requires more than cement backer board on the walls or flooring. Installers should apply a vapor-proof membrane over the
backer boards before setting a single tile. Homeowners may desire a shower without a glass door, but to protect the rest of the bathroom from excessive moisture, a door may be necessary. Otherwise a much larger portion of the
bathroom will require waterproofing, some installers say. HOW MUCH SHOULD A CURBLESS SHOWER COST? A typical walk-in shower with a curb and door costs about $2,500 to $5,000 on average. Installers
say the special modifications for a curbless shower add another $500 to $700 or more depending on the tile type and shower size. For homeowners looking to make their bathrooms more accessible, the cost may prove well worth it.

Enjoy a high-tech shower with a digital mixing valve By Ed Del Grande Tribune News Service
Q: Dear Ed: Next year we are looking to turn one of our unused bedrooms into a bathroom. For the shower area we would like to look into the new electronic mixing valves in
place of a standard hand-turning shower valve. Can you please provide us with more information on digital shower mixing valves? A: A digital shower system usually includes three main components: an electronic mixing valve body that connects to the water lines
and is installed behind a shower wall, plus two digital remote controls that are hardwired to the valve body. One control is installed inside the shower stall and the second optional control can be installed outside the shower stall. So, there is your first advantage with a digital system, total shower
control from outside the shower stall! Some other nice features with a digital mixing valve include: easyto-read LCD displays, one-touch button operation (versus hand-turning), multi-zone control, warmup and pause mode and timing settings to help manage water use.
