Santa Claus ended 2015 with a “very good” creditrating of 757 (out of a possible 850), according to a tongue-in-cheek estimate by the company that created the FICO scoring system. Saint Nick got high marks for making prompt payments on the mortgage he supposedly took to expand his toy factory, the company says, as well as the loan on his new hybrid sleigh.

Blackberries for the home garden If calls to our office are any indication, there is a growing interest in our area to add berry production to home gardens. As garden centers are busy stocking their shelves with new plants, this is a good time to discuss some basic guidelines for a successful berry planting. Blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries are often talked about as if they were one and the same-they are not. The cultural requirements and weather adaptations are very different for these three species. Raspberries do not like our summer heat and are only marginally successful in this area. They must have some afternoon shade to stand a chance. Blueberries also struggle with Oklahoma heat. In addition, blueberries have some specific soil requirements that make them a bit more challenging to grow. If you are growing one of these fruits for the first time, do yourself a favor and begin with blackberries. If you are ready for a greater garden challenge, we’ll talk about blueberries next week. Begin by choosing varieties that

KEITH REED have proven themselves in our climate. Arkansas plant breeders have developed several plants that work well including Choctaw, Cheyenne, Cherokee, Arapaho, Shawnee, and Navaho. Of this group, Navahos have the distinction of being thornless. Each of these varieties vary in flavor, plant structure, and ripening dates so it is a good idea to study them in depth before deciding with plants to purchase. Blackberries prefer a lighter soil that has been improved with generous amounts of organic matter. If your garden soil could just as easily be used for manufacture of bricks, berries are not going to be healthy without significant soil modification. In most cases, a raised planting bed may be your best option. As far as a physical location, plants should ideally be located on a slightly north facing slope to aid in frost protection and to
help protect from drying southwest winds. Mulching with 34 inches of an organic mulch such as pine bark or straw is important not only for improved water management and weed control; it can also reduce excessive suckering as roots are less likely to be injured as tillage is reduced. The most important component of a successful blackberry patch is understanding the growth/fruiting characteristics of the plant and learning to prune accordingly. Blackberry bushes are long lived plants but the individual canes only live for two years. Canes grow in the first year and produce fruit the second year. This is a key concept that must be fully understood if maximum production is desired. Details for understanding proper pruning are beyond the scope of this article but can be found in OSU

As April 15 approaches, real estate tax questions rolling in Moving expenses, insurance premiums and identity theft are on some readers’ minds as the tax-filing deadline fast approaches. DEAR MR. MYERS: I’m about to move to Florida to take a new job. Will my moving expenses be deductible? ANSWER: I get this and similar questions often, especially when the April 15 income-tax deadline draws near. And the answer is always the same: It largely depends on how far you’re moving. I’m devoting this entire column to answering some of those recent questions. Generally, the Internal Revenue Service will let you deduct your moving expenses if your new job is at least 50 miles farther from your old home than your old job was. If you meet this so-called “distance test,” you can deduct the cost of hiring professional movers - both for packing and the actual transporta-
tion of your household goods - or the cost of renting a moving van if you’re doing the work yourself. You can also deduct the cost of travel for yourself and the members of your household from your old home to your new home. That includes the cost of lodging, but not meals. Additionally, the IRS provides moverelated mileage deductions. The figure was 23 cents per mile in 2015, but the rate for moves that will be made this year hasn’t been determined yet. There are some caveats. For starters, expenses that are reimbursed by your new employer are not deductible. Equally important, you must take the most direct route from your old home to your new one. That means that if you’re moving, say, from Chicago to Miami but plan to swing north first to spend a week in New York, you can’t expect Uncle Sam to help underwrite

whole mess out, and now I’m worried the crook who stole my identity might try to file a false tax return in my name to get my refund. What can I do to protect myself? ANSWER: You’re right to be concerned. The IRS says thieves using stolen Social Security numbers claimed $5.8 billion in fraudulent refunds in 2013, the most recent statistics available. It was able to block another $24.2 billion in phony refunds from being issued. The first thing you need to do is to file your upcoming tax return as quickly as possible. As with all other IRS forms and publications, it can be downloaded from the agency’s www.irs.gov website or can be obtained through the mail by calling the agency at 800-829-3676. The affidavit puts the IRS on notice that a bogus return with your name on it may be coming its way. The agency will likely then gives you a six-digit “Protection Identity Number": If it receives a return without your PIN on it, the paperwork will be rejected.

the chimney and seal any and all cracks. The crown, normally a concrete crown, shrinks after installation leaving a seam where the crown sits on the bricks and around the flue liner. I have seen applications where an epoxy mix was used to cover the entire crown to prevent future cracking and leaks.
Make sure the flue has a secure cap to protect against the weather. Check the flashing where the roof covering meets the vertical wall of the chimney. The roof moves slightly in comparison to the chimney and the seal can be cracked or opened. Ideally the metal flashing should have a curved lip that is set into a cut made in the
brick wall of the chimney and then caulked and sealed. If the roof drains up against the chimney, there should be a cricket or saddle (small gable-style roof) built behind the chimney to divert runoff water to either side and away from the wall of the chimney. Have the flue inspected by a certified chimney
sweep for cracks or damage and to make sure that the firebox has a smoke shelf to aid in the venting of the fireplace. There is a lot of moisture created when a wood or gas fireplaces is used. If there are only a few bricks that are damaged, they can be replaced by a qualified masonry contractor. Major damage may
require a rebuild of the chimney. I do not recommend painting the bricks, because this can seal the moisture in and the chimney will not dry during the warmer weather. A brick sealer that allows the bricks to dry while repelling rain can be applied only after the source of the moisture problem has been repaired.
Make this pretty 3-D paper bouquet your printout is, but I cut mine at 2 by 15 inches. Cut a shorter length of cardboard. (I cut mine at 2 by 7 inches). 6. Glue one end of the short piece at the bottom of the back of your bouquet. The short piece should cover the end of the bouquet by about 2 inches. Fold the short piece up where it meets the bottom of the bouquet. 7. Glue one end of the long piece to the other end of the short piece. Fold the long piece about 3 inches down. Now fold the free end of the long piece about 3 inches down. Glue this end to the back of the bouquet so that the “easel” forms a triangle.

The furnished bathroom Decorating a child’s room is so much fun. Here you find the freedom to play with whimsical themes and colors, and create an imaginative space that your child will be happy to call his or her own. Although it’s tempting to think back to what you would have wanted when you were that age, perhaps your child has different interests. To develop the medieval theme, we looked up ancestral shields, simplified them and made our own stencils cut from Mylar. The stencils were placed at intervals alternating between stripes. Use gray and black acrylic paint or silver metallic paint to fill in the stencils. To finish the walls neatly, a solid green stripe was painted along the upper wall overlapping

Reports produced and compiled by RE STATS Inc.
Graceful lines can add an exclamation point to your space By Barbara Ballinger Chicago Tribune
Tyler in working on a vacation house on Lake Michigan in the shape of a C. Her firm, MorganteWilson Architects in Chicago, designed the C so its outside edge curves toward the lake and nested a pool on the opposite side, then repeated the C within the home with a large round seating group, which breaks up the space and adds some whimsy. Sometimes, Tyler says, a curve can be purely decorative, the idea her firm took in hanging an old wooden bike on a wall as a sculpture in another project. Her colleagues liked the shape so much that they punctuated the second floor of their office building with a round powder room with skylight. "That space was carved out to be dramatic and a memorable wow for clients. It wowed me when I came the first time," she says. Designer Kelly Schellert of Ceanii Artful Interiors in St. Louis uses curves repeatedly in her designs to add rhythm and liveliness, which she doesn't think straight lines provide. "They add so much more threedimensionality," she says, and has gone with arched hoods over a range, curved
islands, floors embedded with curved river rocks and curved leaded glass patterns in glass cabinet fronts. The question remains: Can there be too many curves? Absolutely, these experts say. Tyler, who likes to layer patterns on top of one another, provides relief by pairing them with solid choices. Griffin uses them sparingly for some cross-pollination – placing curved pieces in different corners, for instance – rather than in excess. And Carroll pays heed to her well-honed eye for confirmation that she hasn't visually overwhelmed a room with them. "I strive for balance and for a curve to act mostly as an exclamation point," she says.

2009). Tucson, Ariz.based designer Lori Carroll brings curves into her designs through a flow of soft shapes, from round sinks to counters, islands, and showers, and fabric and tile designs. But to use curves to best advantage, scale, placement and the number of curved elements requires thoughtful planning. "If enough, a round mirror might be able to stand on its own on a wall," says Randal Weeks with Aidan Gray Home, a design firm in Dallas. Repeating the form is the approach Instrata Lifestyle Residences took in renovating its NoMad building in New York City. Couches in the shape of demilunes, or crescents, were selected to soften the lobby, which had mostly straight edges. "Your eye now goes right to them," says Rob Neiffer, a director at Instrata's parent company, Invesco. The same motif was used in bathrooms with demilune sinks to warm spaces at another project where a lot of marble was used. The idea of repetitive curves became the inspiration for design director K.

King Arthur was said to have chosen a round table as a symbol of equality, so nobody sat at the head. Andrea Palladio inserted arched windows into facades of his Renaissance structures, and the "Palladium" window later became an iconic motif of '80s megamansions. And who can forget the glamorous swirls associated with art deco styles? Curves never disappeared from the design repertoire. They simply took a back seat periodically, most recently when straight edges and sleeker designs gained favor. Lately, they've been front and center once again, from windows to sectionals, tub chairs, tables, lights, and even fabrics and tiles with curved patterns. Though today's curves are made to mesh with subtle interiors, they haven't lost their inherently graceful appeal _ or the impact that comes from showing off a curve where there could have been just another straight line. Architects and designers say curves are chosen for a range of reasons: • In architecture, they're often the
best solution to fit a building on its site and capture views, as the firm Fitzgerald Associates Architects in Chicago did in designing an elliptical-shaped, 46-story building in Chicago. "A big curve offers the living spaces more expansive views," says firm design principal Steve McFadden. Chicago architects Stuart Cohen and Julie Hacker of Cohen-Hacker Architects designed curved windows for a similar reason for manufacturer Pella Crafted Luxury's new line. "Curved windows also work well as an entry device to move people in and through a space," Hacker says. • They can offer a strong contrast when most shapes and lines are straight, rectilinear or square. A curved stair will immediately engage visitors, says Chris Texter, architect with KTGY Group Architecture + Planning, based in Irvine, Calif. • They create a feeling of comfort by mimicking the human body and nature's organic forms, says New York designer Elaine Griffin, author of "Design Rules: The Insider's Guide to Becoming Your Own Decorator" (Gotham,
