Sustainable travel to school Dorset County Council is fully committed to promoting walking, cycling and, for longer distances, greater use of buses for the school journey. When you are thinking about schools you would like your child to attend, please consider the following: • Children who walk to school are fitter, have better developed social skills, are more familiar with their surroundings, have better road sense and arrive at school more relaxed and ready to learn. • Walking, cycling or using public transport offers children greater independence and flexibility – which is especially important at a time of change in the nature of the school day, with greater numbers of pupils staying for extra study, extra curricular activities and sport. •

Walking, cycling or using the bus reduces congestion on the roads. Parents in Dorset who drive their children to and from school increase congestion on the roads by 20%, drive 20.5 million kilometres per year and generate 4,188 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. If all parents chose to send their children to their nearest school we would save in excess of 10.4 million kilometres and 2124 tonnes of co2 per year!

• Consider the cost of driving your child to school. Current figures put the average cost at £690 per year! • Unless the school you choose is less than 800 metres (a 10 to 15 minute walk) from your home, research has shown that you will probably drive your child to school. • Do take a look at the Dorset Explorer* mapping website, it contains layers showing school locations and walk distances. What schools are within walking distance of your home? Remember, if you choose a school that you will have to drive to, it is a long term commitment. Will you still want to / be able to drive your child to school in 7 years time? Where walking, cycling or public transport are not feasible, car sharing may be an option. This can save time and money and helps cut traffic congestion and air pollution as well as being sociable for children.

What are the different types of schools in Dorset? Dorset is committed to providing a comprehensive system of education and has a variety of different school structures operating in different parts of the County. All schools are organised into groups of schools called pyramids/areas. Beaminster/Blandford/Bridport/Christchurch & Highcliffe/Corfe Hills/Dorchester/ Ferndown & West Moors/Gillingham/Lyme Regis/Lytchett & Upton/Purbeck/ Shaftesbury/Sherborne/Sturminster Newton/Weymouth & Portland/Wimborne & Cranborne.

The LA is responsible for four different types of school:

• Community – a school wholly funded by the LA, which is also

responsible for admissions;

• Voluntary Controlled – a school set up by a voluntary body, usually a

church, totally funded through the LA which is responsible for admissions;

• Voluntary Aided – a school started and owned by a voluntary body,

usually a church, and part funded through the LA. The school governors are responsible for the running of the school and are also responsible for admissions;

• Foundation – a school funded by the LA. However, the school

governors are responsible for admissions.

Voluntary Aided and Foundation schools have their own admissions policies. Some schools are also specialist schools. You should gather as much information as possible to help you decide which school you think would best suit your child. The best way to do this is to look at school prospectuses which will give details of: • The school’s aims and objectives; • Details of the curriculum offered; • National Curriculum test results; • Attendance figures; • Details of policies such as behaviour and discipline;

SATS are Standard Assessment Tests. These are taken at the end of the Key Stages 1 and 2 to provide an overall judgement on a pupil’s achievement. School Leaving Age The law allows children who reach the age of 16 during the 2010/11 school year to leave school on 24 June 2011. Please note that these dates are set by law and the LA has no discretion to alter them. Post 16 Education There will be a sixth form serving your area. School sixth forms and further education colleges can offer a wide range of A level, vocational and other courses. An appeal can be lodged if refused admission. Independent Schools in Dorset The LA has no responsibility for independent or private schools. However, a list of schools in the South West can be obtained from ISIS (The Independent Schools Information Service) see page 4 of this booklet for contact details.

• Out of school activities offered; • School specialisms in the case of secondary schools. You should also consider historical data regarding the allocation of school places which can give an indication as to oversubscription levels and under what criteria places have been allocated in the past (see page 23) It is a good idea to make an appointment to visit any schools which you are interested in. During the Autumn term 2009 a number of schools will be hosting open days and/ or evenings for parents about admission to schools. Parents are advised to contact the schools direct to obtain details about these arrangements. The Office for Standards in Education (OfSTED) inspects all schools. You may wish to obtain copies of latest OfSTED inspection reports and the subsequent action plans for development. They can be obtained from the school, local libraries or the Internet via the following website: www.ofsted.gov.uk/inspect. Primary and secondary performance tables information can be obtained via www.dcsf. gov.uk/performancetables Applying for a school place can seem difficult and confusing. However, you can contact the School Admissions Team, via Dorset Direct, or Choice Advisers who can provide comprehensive help and advice. Your Catchment Area School To find out your catchment area /nearest school you must contact the school admissions team. Moving into a catchment does not guarantee a place.

Points to consider when making application Applicants are responsible for enclosing all relevant information in support of their application. Please read the Admissions Policies for the Schools you are applying for to ensure everything required to meet the criteria is provided. If the relevant information is not provided at the time of application the Admissions Authority cannot be held responsible for seeking this information. The application will be considered solely on information provided. Applicants must make the Admissions Team aware if there are any material changes prior to the allocation of a school place, i.e house move. Parents are responsible for ensuring the correct postage is applied and the Authority will not cover a shortage in posting, or accept an application which arrives late because of short postage as being on time.

Children Starting School for The First Time In Dorset all children born between 1 September 2005 and 31 August 2006 can, if their parents wish, start school in September 2010. Children do not legally have to attend any educational setting until the term following their fifth birthday and parents must decide whether early education - in whatever setting - is right for their child.

Deferred Entry It is expected that most parents will choose the September admission date for their child. However, where an offer of a place is made to a child below compulsory school age, parents have the right to defer their child’s entry to school until later in the school year. Parents are advised to contact the appropriate school/s to discuss this. The place is held for that child and is not available to be offered to another child, unless the parent confirms they no longer want the place or do not take up the place by the appropriate date i.e their fifth birthday or the end of the academic year. Entry may not be deferred beyond the beginning of the term after the child’s fifth birthday or beyond the academic year for which admission is sought. For a child born in the summer term, if parents decide to postpone application until the term after the child’s fifth birthday the child will start school in year 1 on a full time basis.

Home Address The home address is considered to be your main residence where the family/child spends all or the majority of their time. In the case of parents with shared care the Home address of the child will be identified as the address (of the holder) on the Child Benefit details. If you are moving, and are requesting a place in an established year group, you may wish to wait until you have secured a residence in Dorset before the application is considered and this should be clearly marked on the application.

If you/the child/ren are moving into Dorset, in order to consider the application from the new address documentary evidence must be provided. This should be one of the following:• A Solicitors letter confirming exchange of contracts on your sale and purchase; • A copy of a tenancy agreement showing the address of the property, date, duration of the tenancy and the signatures of yourself/ves and the Landlord/s and proof of your Notice to Quit or vacation of your current property; •

If you are taking over the care/guardianship of a child we will require a letter from the parent confirming the new arrangements and proof of your address. If a child lives with someone other than a close relative for 28 days or more then it is a legal requirement that Children’s Services are notified 01305 877445

If you are moving in with a friend or relative in the area we will only consider the application once you are resident with them. We will require a letter from them confirming the arrangements, together with proof of their address. Applications can be considered from all UK residents, British Citizens, those with passports endorsed with a right of abode and from EEA parents accompanying their children. If you are a non EEA citizen we will not consider the application until you/ the child/ren are resident in the country. You must contact us at that time. We will also require copy passports and visas as necessary, together with proof of address in order to process the application. If you are moving to the area but wish to apply from your current address on parental preference grounds ahead of your move please indicate this clearly on your application form.

Siblings The term sibling means full, half, step, adopted and non-blood related brother or sister living with married or co-habiting parents at the same home address (as identified by Child Benefit). In the case where parents have shared care a Solicitors letter or Court Order proving that the children reside together at all times, identifying the main carer and main residence will suffice as evidence of the address and sibling link. In all other cases and where no such evidence is provided the home address of the child will be identified as the address (of the holder) on the child benefit.

Your preference school Due to oversubscription it is not always possible to offer a place at your catchment or preferred school. Living in or moving into a catchment area does not guarantee a place at the catchment school, nor does having a sibling at the school or attendance at a feeder school. If it proves possible to offer your child/ren a place in your preferred school and it is not your catchment school your acceptance of the place offered may mean that the daily travelling arrangements and costs will be your responsibility. If you have any younger children whom you later wish to attend the school there is no guarantee that a place will be available. There is no guarantee a place will be available in

the recognised receiver school. Any application will be considered in line with the admissions policy for the school. The Authority strongly recommends you take the opportunity to name more than one preference. All decisions are made on an individual school basis and naming only one school will not improve your chances of being offered it. You must consider the options should you not be offered your highest preference school. If you do not name your catchment school and have to be re-directed to an alternative you will be responsible for the transport arrangements.

Children with a statement of special Educational Needs If your child has a full Statement of special educational needs please be aware the School Admissions Team will not be involved in their school placement. This will be dealt with by the Dorset LA SEN Team and you should contact an SEN Caseworker to discuss your child’s continued education. 01305 224888

Parental Responsibility In England and Wales if the parents are married to each other at the time of the birth, or have jointly adopted a child, both have parental responsibility. This is not automatically the case for unmarried parents and according to current law the mother always has parental responsibility, however a father has this only (from 1 December 2003) by jointly registering the birth of the child with the mother, by a parental responsibility agreement with the other or by a court order. Proof of parental responsibility may be required if there is any doubt regarding this. Should both parents have responsibility only one set of preferences can be considered. If agreement cannot be reached between the parties an application will only be considered from the applicant who holds the child benefit, unless a Court Order overrides this.

Choice Advisors - Independent advice Through the Dorset Parent-Partnership a Choice Advisor can provide a range of advice about schools, explain how the co-ordinated admission scheme works and the whole process of applying for a school place. The service offers: • free independent advice to parents/carers; • help and support to enable families to make the best and most realistic choice of school using all resources and information available; • help to maximise choices by interpreting and explaining the information to meet a family’s specific needs. This will include information about admission arrangements in other local authority areas and how to apply for schools in those areas. Admission Policy for Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools Dorset LA is the Admissions Authority for all Community and Voluntary Controlled schools in the County. The policy set out below does not apply to Voluntary Aided and Foundation schools. Where a child(ren) lives with parents with shared responsibility each for part of a week the home address will be identified as that of the person on the relevant Child Benefit. 1. Where all parental preferences for places at the school can be satisfied all children seeking a place will be admitted. 2. Where there are too few places available (see footnote 4) to satisfy all preferences places will be allocated according to the following priority order: i.) children who are in the care of a local authority (see footnote 5); ii.) children living within the school’s catchment area and who will have a sibling(s) attending the school at the time of admission (see footnotes 6, 7, 8 & 9); iii.) children living within the school’s catchment area (see footnote 6); iv.) children living outside the school’s catchment area who have a sibling(s) attending the school at the time of admission (see footnotes 7, 8 & 9); v.) children living outside the school’s catchment area. 3. Where there are too few places available to satisfy all preferences in any category above, the following priority order will apply: i.) children who were attending one of the preferred school’s recognised maintained feeder schools during the previous year (see footnotes 10 & 11); ii.) children whose parents wish them to attend a CE Voluntary Controlled school on denominational grounds (see footnote 12); iii.) all other children 4.

If too few places are available to satisfy preferences expressed within any of the priority order categories above, places will be allocated on the basis of the child’s closeness to the preferred school (defined by straight line measurement using a Geographical Information based system which identifies an Easting and Northing for the home address and the school building and calculates the distance between the two locations - see footnote 13).

5. In the event that the LA is unable to distinguish between applications despite applying the priority categories above, lots will be drawn by an independent (of the LA) person to determine the final place(s).

Footnotes 1.

Ferndown Upper School – After allocating places to children who are in the care of the Local Authority, priority will be given to up to 26 pupils who can demonstrate an aptitude in Visual Arts. Should the number of applications for these places exceed availability, places will be allocated in

accordance with the Local Authority’s Admissions Policy. Remaining places up to the planned admission limit of 260 will be allocated in accordance with the Local Authority’s Admissions Policy.

Portland, St George’s C Primary School – Priority for the additional 30 places available at Year 3 will be given to children who are in the care of the Local Authority followed by those children attending Portland, The Grove C Infant School during the previous year. Any remaining places will be allocated in accordance with the Local Authority’s Admissions Policy.

The admission of children with Statements of Special Educational Needs is covered by Sections 324 to 328 of, and Schedule 27 to, the Education Act 1996. Guidance on the Admission of Statemented pupils is given in the Special Education Needs Code of Practice.

4. The places available are defined as the published Admission Number for the school for that year of entry. 5. This criterion specifically relates to children with either a care order (full or interim) or who are accommodated under Section 22 of the Children Act 1989. 6. The school’s catchment area is a geographical area defined by the authority following consultation with the governors of the school and neighbouring schools. Details are held by each school. 7.

The term “sibling” means full brother or sister, stepbrother or sister, adoptive brother or sister and non-blood related children who live with married or cohabiting parents in the same household and relates to all year groups provided by the school. (see page 9 for clarification of home address)

8. In the case of an infant school the sibling link will apply to the related junior school and vice versa. 9.

Where parents/guardians have children of multiple births (twins, triplets, etc) and the LA is unable to allocate all the children a place at the preferred school, the parents/guardians will be invited to decide which of the children should be allocated the available place(s).

10. For details of recognised maintained feeder schools parents are advised to refer to the School Admission website. 11. This category applies to statutory aged pupils only. It does not apply to children attending pre-schools, day nurseries and playgroups. 12. To qualify for consideration under this category, parents/guardians will need to show that at least one adult family member and the child to whom the application relates have been attending the local church at least once a month for a minimum of a year prior to the closing date for applications, and that the application must be supported by a written statement from the vicar/priest/minister or leader of the church confirming this. 13. The use of the “straight line” measurement method applies to the allocation of places only. It will not be used to determine transport entitlement, where it is a legal requirement to measure by the nearest available walking route. 14. Separate admission policies apply to Community schools in Gillingham and Verwood. Details of these policies can be found on the School Admission website.

Transport Entitlement for Reception to Year 11 Pupils 1. Free transport can be provided for your child to attend their catchment or nearest appropriate school where: a) your child is in Reception year to year 4 and lives 2 miles or more shortest available walking distance from home to school b) your child is in years 5 to 11 and lives 3 or more miles shortest available walking distance from home to school 2. Free transport can be provided for your child to attend their catchment or nearest appropriate school if you are in receipt of the maximum level of working tax credit or your child is entitled to free school meals and: a) your child is in years 5 or 6 and lives 2 miles or more shortest available walking distance miles from the school 3. Free transport can be provided for your child to attend one of their three nearest schools if your are in receipt of the maximum level of working tax credit or your child is entitled to free school meals and a) your child is in years 7 to 11 and lives 2 miles shortest available walking route but under six miles shortest available driven route, home to school.

Denominational transport

If you have been allocated a place on religious/denomination grounds at your nearest faith school: The council provides free transport if: a)

your child is in years 7-11 and you are in receipt of the maximum level of working tax credit or your child is entitled to free school meals and the distance between home and school is more than 2 miles shortest walking route and less than 15 miles shortest driven route.

b)

you receive Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance (income based), Pension Credit, support under VI of immigration and Asylum Act 1999 or Child Tax Credit (up to current government limit) and the shortest available walking distance from home to school is between 2 and 5 miles for reception to year four pupils and 3 and 5 miles for years five and six pupils

c)

Otherwise the council provides transport to enable your child to attend their nearest faith school, if allocated a place on denominational/ religious grounds and you can apply to pay for a space on the transport if the distance from home to school is between

i) 2 and 5 miles shortest walking distance for reception to year 4 pupils

ii) 3 and 5 miles shortest walking distance for years 5 and 6 pupils

iii) 3 miles shortest walking distance and 10 miles shortest driven route for years 7 to 11 pupils

The charge for denominational transport may vary but for the 2009/10 academic year was £240 per child, and can be paid in two instalments in August and February. Any of the transport specified above will only be provided at the start and end of the normal school day, and only with regard to the home address of the child (see page 8 for home address). If you qualify under 1 a) and b) the Authority will contact you automatically before your child starts school (where possible). To apply under any other criteria you must complete a Transport Request form available on www.dorsetforyou.com/schooladmissions or contact the school admissions team for a form and return this to School Admissions enclosing all supporting evidence as necessary.

Concessionary school transport If your child does not qualify for free school transport you may be able to apply for a seat on a Local Authority contract bus. There may be a charge for this transport. You should contact Dorset passenger transport; dorsetpassengertransport@dorsetcc.gov.uk 01305 221704 / 4544 / 4545 / 5164 Other Reasons If you feel you may have other grounds for applying for transport, for example your child has a disability, or medical condition, or you are in temporary accommodation you can apply for transport and your application will be considered by the school admissions team. Transport may be provided over lesser distances, if there is no reasonably safe route for a child to walk accompanied as necessary. Complete an application available on www.dorsetforyou.com/schooladmissions or contact School Admissions for a form. In any other circumstances you are responsible for the safety and arrangements for your child’s journey to and from school. Where transport is offered, it will be provided from a pick up/drop off point that must be no more than ¾ mile for years R-6 and 1 mile for years 7-11 walk from your home. Parents are responsible for their child’s safety in getting to and from the pick up and drop off points. Should you be refused transport you have right of appeal and this will be explained to you when you are advised of the outcome of your application. All parties are responsible for ensuring that children’s behaviour on school transport meets acceptable standards and this can be achieved by working together.

Applying to start school or transferring to Junior or Middle School September 2010 Reception, Year 2-3 (Infant to Junior) and Year 4-5 (First to Middle) • If you live in the Dorset LA area but your first preference school is in another LA area, please complete the LA application process for that area. You can name Dorset schools on the application. •

If you are applying for a Dorset first, infant, primary school as your first preference school you should ensure that your application is made on a Dorset LA application form, or via the Dorset on line system on www.dorsetforyou.com/ schooladmissions from 1 September 2009.

• On line applications must be submitted by midnight 4 December 2009. • Completed application forms may be given to the Headteacher of your child current school or for new starters the first preference school, and must be received by the end of the school day on 4 December 2009. •

Applying for Secondary/Upper School places – September 2010 Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme As a result of legislation all LAs are required to operate a Co-ordinated Admission Scheme covering all secondary schools. The arrangements and timetables set out in this booklet are part of the Scheme. The main purpose of the Scheme is to ensure that every child applying for a school place within the area served by the LA receives one offer of a school place on the same day. Year 6-7 (Primary – Secondary) and Year 8 – 9 (Middle to Upper) •

If you live in the Dorset LA area regardless of the preference of schools, please complete a Dorset LA application form naming any schools you have a preference for, or apply on line at www.dorsetforyou.com/schooladmissions from 1 September 2009

• If you live outside of the Dorset LA area (including Poole and Bournemouth) you should ensure that your application is made through your home LA. You can name Dorset schools on this application. • Completed application forms may be given to the Headteacher of your child’s current school, and must be received by the end of the school day on Friday, 23 October 2009 •

(For looked after children the closing date will be 15 February)

Late applications for Dorset schools Applications received after the stated deadlines of 23.10.09 and 4.12.09 which do not meet the criteria set out above will be regarded as late applications irrespective of the reason, and will be considered as part of the appropriate late round. The following timetable applies to late applications. These will be considered alongside anyone on the waiting list and anyone who has a pending appeal. In year applications The current School Admissions Code of Practice requires coordination of all in year applications from September 2010. All applications must be made through the Home Authority. Consultation on the new coordinated scheme will take place and must be agreed and published by January 2010. If you are moving to the Dorset area and your child will need a place in an already established year group, or you wish to change your child’s current school you should contact Dorset School Admissions team to discuss space availablity, transport arrangements and any other relevant local information. They will be able to help with advice on the application and allocation process. Dorset LA operates an In Year Fair Access protocol inline with DCSF guidelines and you should contact the School Admissions Team for further information.

Appealing for a school place If you are unsuccessful in getting the place you wanted for your child you have the right to appeal to an Independent Appeals Panel. Normally this means that you have applied for a place at a school which is oversubscribed and: •

Either you have not been offered a place because the available places have been offered to children who according to the LA’s (or in the case of Voluntary Aided or Foundation schools the governing body’s) published criteria, have a higher priority of a place at the school than your child;

• Or the class/teaching group at the school is full and there are no further places available for your child. Information about the appeals process is available from:

Democratic Services County Hall, Dorchester, DT1 1XJ Telephone 01305 224188 or in the case of Voluntary Aided and Foundation schools, from the Clerk to the Governing Body at the school address.

How to Appeal To appeal for a place at a Community or Voluntary Controlled school you should write to the School Admissions Team enclosing an A5 self addressed envelope or download the form from School Admissions website at www.dorsetforyou.com/schooladmissions. This should be returned to the address on the appeal form, not school admissions.

For a Voluntary Aided or Foundation school you should contact the Clerk to the Governing Body at the school. An application form and information booklet will be sent to you.

• You will be told about the date, time and place of the hearing as soon as possible by the Clerk to the Appeals Panel not by the School Admissions Team; •

You are encouraged to attend and speak at the panel hearing, or you can bring a friend to help you put your case to the panel or you may prefer to put your case in writing. If your appeal is turned down, you cannot appeal again in the same academic year unless there has been a significant change in circumstances or other new material evidence becomes available which you could not reasonably have obtained or submitted at the original hearing.

If you have a complaint about the way your case was dealt with and you feel you have suffered an injustice you can complain to the Commission for Local Administration known as the Ombudsman whose contact details are shown on page 4 of this booklet.

Key Stage 1 appeals The appeal arrangements for children in Key Stage 1 classes (Reception, Years 1 and 2) may differ from other year groups if admitting your child would take a class over the limit of 30. If you have been refused a place for this reason your appeal would be an Infant Class Size appeal and you can only appeal against the decision if you feel that: • the decision to refuse admission was not one which a reasonable Admission Authority would have made in the circumstances of the case or; • your child would have been offered a place if the admissions arrangements had been properly implemented.

Helpful Information

Once the offer of a place has been made, it may be withdrawn only in very limited circumstances, for example:

Can I choose which school my child attends? No, but parents can express a preference for a particular school. However, there is no guarantee that a place at the preferred school can be offered although the LA tries to meet the wishes of parents wherever possible. Parents may wish to refer to the information provided in Appendix 1 of the booklet or alternatively on the School Admissions website which shows how many first preference applications were successful for September 2009 (normal admissions round i.e those applications which met the initial closing Helpful dates for primary and secondary applications). As a result of demand from families living in a catchment area and/or parental preference applications a number of Dorset schools are full and have no places available. When a child is refused a place at a particular school it is usually for two reasons: to avoid full class sizes and to maintain the quality of education on offer at the school.

• Where the application was fraudulent or deliberately misleading (including if a sibling was stated but subsequently does not attend the school); • Where an offer has been wrongly made by someone other than the Admissions authority. • Where, following reminders from the school/LA, and appropriate warnings as to the consequences, the parent does not respond within one week of the final reminder and therefore is deemed to have declined the offer of a school place.

If you are either planning to transfer schools or are moving into the area you must contact the Admissions Caseworker for the area you are interested in prior to submitting your application to discuss the application.

The Admission Authority will try, wherever possible, to meet the preference ranked first by parents. However, due to oversubscription, this is not always possible and occasionally it may mean that a parent’s second or third preference is given priority over another parent’s first preference. It may be possible to offer a place at more than one of the schools for which parents have expressed a preference. If this is the case only the highest ranked school where places are available will be offered. If it is not possible to meet any of the preferences, then the nearest alternative school with places will be offered considering the efficient use of resources, if transport is to be offered by the LA.

What is the admission number and how do I know how many places there are at the school? The entry number of a school is called the Admission Number and is mainly decided by available accommodation or, in the case of primary schools, to meet class size limits. This is the number of children the admissions authority is legally obliged to admit to a year group. The Admission Numbers for schools in the pyramids/area in which you live or are interested in can be viewed on the School Admissions website. For Community and Voluntary Controlled schools you should contact the School Admissions Team to find out if places are available. For Voluntary Aided and Foundation Schools contact the schools directly.

How are applications considered? The application form invites parents to indicate three preferences. The system is known as the equal preference system and all Dorset schools operate this policy. Parents should note that they cannot automatically assume that they will be allocated a place at their local/catchment school if they do not list it as one of their preferences as other parents who have listed the school as a preference will be considered ahead of those who have not. This may also affect transport entitlement.

Can an offer of a place at a school be withdrawn?

What happens if I change my mind for a school place in September? Unless this is due to a house move, should any parent change any of their preferences after the relevant closing date, the new preference will be treated as a late application which is explained in this booklet. You do not need to resubmit the application form but you will need to put your change of preference school in writing to the Admissions Team for it to be considered. The date the Admissions Team is notified of the change of preference will determine the late round in which the revised preference will be considered. For in year applications you must put your changes in writing to the school admissions team.

Parents must ensure all relevant information/documents are enclosed. The the School Admissions team offer a place in the year group according to your child’s age. You should speak to the preferred school/s and the Special Education Needs Team to discuss alternative arrangements.

What happens if I decline the place offered? If a parent decides to decline the school place offered, for whatever reason, the vacancy will be considered against applications for that school with the next round of allocations. This will include those on a waiting list and/or anyone who has submitted an appeal which has yet to be heard. If your child is of legal school age you must advise the school admissions team of the alternative arrangements you are making for your child’s education.

What options are available to me if I am not offered a place at my preferred school? If you are not offered a place at your preferred school, you can: • Accept the alternative place offered and/or; • Appeal to an independent Appeals Panel; • Ask to go on the waiting list. Please note that accepting a place at an alternative school will not prejudice the appeal for your preferred school.

Appendix 1: Other information for Parents This section gives information about places that were allocated at each school the year before the one that you are applying for. It shows which schools had more applications than places available and the number of first preferences that were refused. It also tells you under which criterion children were offered places (please refer to the admission policy for the school). This is intended to help you make your decision but it is only an indication and you should be aware that this information does change each year. More data is available on www.dorsetforyou.com/schooladmissions. This information does not include details of the late round of allocations eg those parents who missed the first closing date of A map showing the final place allocated can be provided on request. Legend SEN = A child with a full statement of special needs LAC = A child in the care of a Local Authority

Can I put my name on a waiting list if I do not obtain a place at my first preference school? If you are refused your first preference school and wish your child’s name to be placed on a waiting list you will need to confirm this in writing. You should note that waiting lists will operate for one term following application. At the end of the term if the parent wishes the child to remain on a waiting list, they should renew the request in writing to carry their child’s name forward on the waiting list for a further term. Parents are asked not to contact School Admissions to enquire about their child’s position on a waiting list as it can change regularly and will only be used if a place becomes available. Should a place become available the admission policy will be used to allocate the place and is not allocated on a ‘first come first served basis’. If you are refused a place at a Voluntary Aided or Foundation school you will need to contact the school to find out if they hold a waiting list and, if so, the procedures for inclusion.

What happens if I do not name my catchment school as a preference? If a place cannot be offered at any of your preferred school/s and your catchment school is full the Authority will offer a place at the next nearest school with places.
