RUN THE WORLD

By Afifa Sayeed This waist-length boxy sweater is reminiscent of what I love most about modern androgynous design simple lines, gender-neutral shapes and an overall sense of order. From Stitch Three Together: Run the World is an amazing piece designed with yarn from all three of us. Its side to side construction means that the shaping and pattern work is a breeze. The fabric it creates is easy to wear and this piece will flatter many body shapes. The three of us are all wearing the SAME sweater in our photographs. Incredible, right?

LOBLOLLY PINE

By Tanis Gray Conifer pine trees are one of the oldest plant genera on Earth. Their pinecones symbolize enlightenment and remind me of my childhoodwhen we would gather armloads full, coat them in peanut butter then roll them in bird seed, leaving this treat out for the birds during the snowy winters. The delightfully squishy hat and cowl set are both knit seamlessly in the round from the bottom up with elegant corrugated ribbed trim. Stranded colorwork makes a double-thick, extra-warm fabric, and the traditional Norwegian shaping of the hat ensures a comfortable, unisex fit. From Stitch Three Together: Tanis Gray is a masterful designer of stranded colorwork in striking motifs. The Loblolly Pine is a species which can be easily found in the mid-Atlantic, which bears a beautifully shaped cone. This two piece unisex set in DK weight yarn will yield a soft and warm hat and cowl which will please the nature lover.

Dyer Notes Look for two tonal colorways with a high contrast for the best clarity in the colorwork. Alternately, you can use a speckled colorway and a solid tonal with a high contrast.

I am Kim Russo and I am the dyer and owner of Kim Dyes Yarn. I have been dyeing full time since 2010 when we relocated our family from Illinois to Virginia. I have a very supportive husband who has given me the space and assistance I needed to take each step to grow my business. We have a beautiful family of three children and two grandchildren...and a cat and a dog we adore. I was raised in and spent most of my life in the Midwest after being adopted from Korea as a very small child. If we have met in person, no doubt you heard my accent from Northern Illinois! After learning to knit as a child, when I would knit a skein of acrylic yarn, unravel it and start over again and again, I put the needles down until I had my children. Having my children instinctively made me pick up the needles again. This was before Ravelry was created, so I was a part of some knitting lists online. I learned to make something real and how to read patterns this way. When my babies were in cloth diapers, I learned how to make wool soaker diaper covers and my love for knitting really exploded. I stayed up all night to knit while the babies were sleeping! I think a lot of Midwesterners have a DIY streak and I am no different. Learning new skills has been my life long journey. I have always been drawn to beautiful color combinations and before long, I told myself I could learn to dye and make all of the colors I wanted to work with. This is how it all began. When we moved to Virginia, I decided not to return to work and to focus on dyeing yarn full time. I have been blown away by the reception to my work. I pinch myself regularly that I get to make a living as a maker. As I grow my business, I have learned that I need to make my own opportunities. This is how the idea of a book of knitting and crochet patterns featuring my hand dyed yarn began. As a one woman indie dyer operation, I needed some friends to work with me to make it happen. I looked at my network of amazing fiber friends and asked Adella of LolaBean Yarn Co. and Jeanne of Destination Yarn to join me. In these two friends, I have a sisterhood of two other strong, focused and talented women. Being a member of Stitch Three Together with Adella and Jeanne is a dream come true.

FINDING HOME

Finding Home

By Jessica Anderson There’s an unmistakable longing for HOME, for that belonging, for that safe place that you can just fall apart and be your true self that invades all of our lives. That hope for community, for that place where you truly feel at grace. Some of us have found it, while others of us are still searching for our Village. This shawl seeks to be a part of that Home for you- cozy, comfortable, easy yet pushing you beyond yourself. The lace edging, for the final 3/4 of the shawl body is worked in this lace stitch that conveys that image of a safe place for me- sometimes when I stare at it long enough, I find a heart emerging, other times, I see hands that are uplifting you when you need it the most. From Stitch Three Together: Jessica’s Finding Home shawl design provides a woolly hug to help you through a hard day. The substantial size of this shawl means you can wrap it around your body and enjoy the warmth of the soft and stretchy fabric. If you are looking for a piece which evokes feelings of comfort and safety, we suggest Finding Home.

I am Jeanne Stevenson, the owner and dyer behind Destination Yarn. I have been dyeing professionally for over ten years and have traveled the country to bring my colorways to many shows and events. But before all that I grew up around yarn. My grandma passed her love of the fiber arts on to me at an early age. I learned to knit and card wool, and volunteered at shows with her local guild all before high school. However I put that aside in pursuit of a real job. I went to on to earn a masters degree in architecture and worked in that field until 2009. While working as an architect I filled my extra hours with rediscovering my love knitting – throwing myself into learning as much about the craft as possible. Learning to dye yarn was the natural next step. I began slowly with some experiments including dying enough lace weight wool to knit my grandmother a Cherry Blossom shawl. That Christmas I dyed yarn for all of the knitters in my life and a new passion began. With the economic downturn my career evaporated at the same time as I had my first child. I decided that if I wanted a better and more flexible job for my family, I was going to have to create it myself. Since then Destination Yarn has grown as my family has grown. Slowly and joyfully. I now have 3 kids who are proud that their mom is a small business owner and artist. My husband has believed in this crazy dream every step of the way - even when I didn't believe in it myself. Last year I moved my company into a studio in a storefront in Cleveland, Ohio and added teaching dye workshops to my repertoire. My background in architecture and love of travel informs every part of my creative process. I use my passion for design and color to create unique colorways which translate places into yarn. I am thrilled that Destination Yarn is a part of this exciting new publication and to be working with these two extremely talented dyers!

My name is Adella Colvin and I am the owner of LolaBean Yarn Co. While many of you may be familiar with my company, I want to take a moment to introduce myself to those who may not be so familiar. First and foremost, I am blessed with a wonderfully supportive husband, a rambunctious toddler and two teenage sons. My family is unquestionably a driving force behind my desire to succeed not only in business, but also in my quest to ensure that they value all human life. I am a 38-year-old, bi-racial (Puerto Rican and African American), Indie Dyer living in Georgia. The first 30 years of my life are rooted in places like Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, and the Bronx, New York. Life as an Air Force Brat fostered in me a love and appreciation for diversity. Interestingly, I was taught knitting by my neighbor here in Georgia. My husband was sent to Afghanistan for a year, and she was kind enough to reach out to me and offer her friendship. A retired Principal from Battle Creek Michigan, she took me under her wing and introduced me to the fiber world. What ultimately catapulted me into the world of indie dyeing was the lack of yarn shops in my community and, the way I was sometimes treated when I was able to locate one. Sadly, I walked into a yarn shop one day and was immediately told, “the bathroom is for customers only. This prompted me to dye my own yarn for personal use and when I would show it to people, they would ask where they could get their hands on it. The rest is history.

ORCHARD VILLAGE Finding Home

By Laura Schmidt This rich and textural shawl showcases a coordinated pair of variegated and tonal fingering weight yarns. Knit with larger needles, it knits up quickly creating a soft and lofty fabric. The asymmetrical shape allows the shawl to be worn in multiple ways, whether you’re going to apple picking, an evening event or the office. The optional tassels hold the shawl in place on the most blusterous of days. From Stitch Three Together: For both visual and stitching interest, the Orchard Village Shawl scores high marks. The asymmetrical shaping and size mean this is design is easy to wear and will stay in place without requiring a shawl pin. Laura has paired smocked stitches with yarn overs for an unusual textured fabric with the flow you desire from a fingering weight silk blend yarn.

Dyer Notes For the smocked stitches, we suggest a colorway which won’t intrude too much on the stitchwork. A speckled or lightly variegated will work best, paired with a contrasting solid or tonal for the border and contrast bands. The design relies on a yarn which drapes well such as this single ply menino-silk blend.
