Mix together the story of David and Goliath with parts of “The Little Engine That Could� and you have an idea of what Main Street Community Services is facing and wants to do in the Aviva Community Fund challenge starting this Monday, Dec. 5. That’s why it needs everyone’s support in Stittsville and area and beyond. The Aviva Community Fund challenge is an online voting program that ends up selecting worthwhile community projects for funding by Aviva, which is the world’s sixth largest insurance group. The challenge for Main Street Community Services, a Stittsvillebased registered charity that works with special needs children and youth, is to generate enough votes to move it along to the Aviva Community Fund challenge finals and the possibility of receiving up to $250,000 to help it move into new, larger premises where it can expand its programs and better serve the needs of its special needs clientele and their families. The voting online is quite simple: go to the Main Street Community Services’ URL for the contest at http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf11289, register and begin voting as of Monday, Dec. 5. A person can vote only once a day with the voting period running from Dec. 5 to Dec. 16. There are only 30 projects involved in this voting which is the semi-final level of the Aviva Community Fund challenge. Main Street Community Services placed sixth in its category in previous voting, advancing to the semi-finals. But once again, indeed even more than in the initial voting, Main Street Community Services is up against some stiff competition in these semi-finals, competing against some large organizations. It is not going to be easy to prevail in these semi-finals and move on to the finals which are a judged competition with no online voting involved. But Main Street Community Services is convinced that with voter support, it can slay some of these Goliaths and believes that it can prevail, just like “The Little Engine That Could� did. no enough space to allow Main Street Community Services to expand its programs to meet the needs of its special needs children. There is no wheelchair access so that staff has to carry any youngsters in wheelchairs up the stairs. The premises must be vacated in the summertime even though Main Street Community Services operates a summer program. The premises are also not available during the Christmas break which is when there is an enhanced need for its services since schools are not functioning. Added to all this is the fact that the current premises do not have enough space to allow Main Street Community Services to expand its programs and implement new ones such as a post-21 program that it would like to develop. But all of these plans for expanded and new programs by Main Street Community Services cannot take place in the current premises. That is why Main Street Community Services is involved in the Aviva Community Fund challenge, in the hope of getting enough funds to allow it to purchase new, larger premises or at least lease some new premises that would not only be larger than the current premises but would be more accessible. “There’s so much more we want to do,” Ms. Steinburg, who founded Main Street Community Services, says, adding that larger premises would allow Main Street Community Services to support more special needs children
and their families and to connect even more with the community. The new premises would ideally be in Stittsville. “We want to stay in this community,” Ms. Steinburg says, not only because she was raised in Goulbourn but because Main Street Community Services operates six residential homes in the area– three in Stittsville, one in Richmond and two in Kanata. She likes the community atmosphere which exists in Stittsville. “There’s more of a community here than in a larger urban centre,” she says, noting in particular the support that has been given Main Street Community Services by the Stittsville District Lions Club, the Stittsville Legion and the community in general. In the Aviva Community Fund challenge online voting, Main Street Community Services is up against a number of organizations in larger communities. That is why consistent, dedicated voting is needed if Main Street Community Services is to succeed. Vote online once a day
It only takes a few seconds each day and yet it could means thousands of dollars to Main Street Community Services, giving it the funding that it needs to move into new, larger, more accessible premises that will allow it to expand its programs, start new programs and just generally do more to help the special needs youth that it serves. What we are talking about is registering and then voting each day from Dec. 5 to Dec. 16 for the Main Street Community Services entry in the Aviva Community Fund challenge. It starts on Monday, Dec. 5, running until Dec. 16. Anyone can vote online once a day during the voting period for any particular project. Main Street Community Services is one of 30 semi-finalists in the Aviva Community Fund
challenge where Aviva, the sixth largest insurance group, makes funding available to community projects based on the results of online voting plus a final judging process. But to get to the final judging, the project has to prove popular support. And that’s done by garnering online votes over the voting period. So, you, as an individual, can help make a difference. You can make life better for special needs youth. You can help a registered charity dedicated to improving the quality of life for challenged youth take that next step, one that requires new premises. Tension and high drama on the number 87 A retired guy’s life needs some excitement now and then, which is why I decided to take a ride on a city bus. The bus has been the main topic of conversation in the newspapers and on the radio and TV. If you were looking for drama, the bus was the place to find it. When I worked downtown, I used to take the bus all the time. This was a few years ago, before there started to be drama and tension on the bus. The way I remember it, I got on the bus in the morning, usually got a seat after the high school kids got off, read the paper for awhile, got off at my stop and walked the rest of the way to work. It was decidedly lacking in drama. The bus drivers were nice, although none of them sang. The passengers behaved themselves. Occasionally someone would have his headphones turned up
CHARLES GORDON too high so that a tinny whine leaked out. But that was it. I figured the real drama was happening in the cars, from what I heard from my colleagues who drove to work. They had tales of delays, traffic jams, crazy drivers on the Queensway, road rage and such. My time on the bus couldn’t compete with that. Nothing much happened. The same thing going home. I might have to wait a bit, but that wasn’t too dramatic. I might have to stand for awhile, but there were worse things in life. The bus might take half an hour instead of 20 minutes if the traffic was bad but I had a book to read. The thing I liked best was that I arrived home in a decent frame of mind, unlike
the car drivers, who had those veins in their necks bulging from trying to keep from screaming. Obviously, from reading all the reports. Times had changed. The bus had become a combination of Blackboard Jungle and Saturday at the Opera. I had to see it. But something went horribly wrong. First, the bus arrived on time, which wasn’t supposed to happen. Then the bus driver was friendly. Then there were no unruly passengers on board. Then the bus driver didn’t sing. Nor did he talk on a cellphone. It was too quiet, as they say in the movies, just before it gets noisy. Quiet was OK once I got used to it. I had a book to read. The bus hopped onto the transitway and got downtown in a hurry. Getting across downtown was another matter, but nobody on the bus seemed to be impatient about it. No passengers yelled at
the driver or vice versa. The bus got to the Rideau Centre and I got off, thinking: “That was weird.” Well, maybe there would be some drama on the ride back. I had lunch downtown, did a little browsing for this and that and then went to wait with lots of other people for the bus. Several pulled up, none of them mine, which was OK because I wanted to see if any drivers would walk off and refuse to go any further. None did. Hmmm. Soon my bus arrived. I got on. The driver was friendly. I got a place to sit and read my book. The passengers minded their own business.

Fortunately there was a fair amount of drama in the book I was reading because there wasn’t any on the bus. It didn’t arrive late, as far as I can tell. The passengers got off without insulting the driver. What to make of this experience? Maybe it was atypical. Or maybe it wasn’t. Just to make sure, I think I’ll try again. Even without drama, it sure beats paying for parking.

The City of Ottawa reminds residents that biweekly collection of the green bin will start beginning the week of November 28, 2011 and end in March 2012. Please refer to your collection calendar for your neighbourhood schedule. Leaf and yard waste collection continues throughout the year with the organics collection program. Residents can put leaves and other yard waste in the green bin, in paper yard waste bags or in a garbage can that can be placed next to the green bin on collection day. Residents are reminded that plastic bags of any kind, including compostable plastic bags, sanitary products, diapers and animal feces are not accepted in the green bin. Winter Overnight Parking Regulations in Effect November 15, 2011 to April 1, 2012 As we prepare for the winter months, the City of Ottawa is reminding residents that winter overnight parking regulations will be in effect from November 15, 2011 to April 1, 2012. These regulations ensure the City’s snow-clearing crews are able to keep Ottawa’s roads safe and clear for pedestrians, cyclists, public transit, and motorists. Your safety is the City of Ottawa’s top priority. The City enforces winter overnight parking restrictions between November 15 and April 1 when Environment Canada forecasts a snow accumulation of 7 cm or more. This includes any forecast for a range of snow of more than 7 cm, for example 5 to 10 cm. When winter parking restrictions are being enforced, vehicles are not allowed to park on any city street between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. These restrictions are in place to help the City clear the way for you. Vehicles parked on the street
when a restriction is in effect will be ticketed, even if it does not snow. On-street parking permit holders are exempt from winter overnight parking restrictions. Thanks to my office staff for their help in organizing our participation in the parade, but most of all, thanks to the community for welcoming Santa to Stittsville once again this year. 2012 City Budget Update Here is the latest update in the 2012 Budget process. The Draft budget is operating with lowest proposed tax increase in five years at 2.39 per cent. All standing Committees of Council in addition to the Transit Commission, Board of Health and the Library Board have considered the 2012 draft budget for their respective areas. The Police Services Board will meet on November 28th to finalize its budget while a special meeting of Council will be held on November 30th for consideration and approval of the 2012 budget recommendations from all of the Committees of Council and relevant boards. It is anticipated that the budget for services supported by the water/sewer rate will be tabled at a special Environment Committee meeting in January, but I will keep the community apprised of any further developments. An evening about asbestos SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The use of asbestos in new construction projects has been banned for health and safety reasons in many developed countries and regions including the European Union, Australia,
Hong Kong, Japan and New Zealand. In Canada, millions have been spent removing asbestos from buildings including schools and even the Parliament Buildings. But the federal government’s policy allows exportation of as-
bestos to countries where its importation has not been banned. On Saturday, Oct. 22, the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa decided to advocate against this government policy. “Given the information we have at our disposal regarding the potential dangers of asbestos if not handled properly, the
decision to send it to countries that don’t have the means nor the resources to do so is unconscionable,” writes Rev. Michel Dubord of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in Richmond in an email about the situation. To shed more light on this situation, St. John’s Anglican Church in Richmond is hosting
an evening with a Chrysotile asbestos widow Michaela Keyserlingk this coming Monday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at the church on Fowler Street in Richmond. Everyone is urged to attend and learn more about this situation with regard to the exportation of asbestos by Canada for use in other countries.

SECOND IN A THREE-PART SERIES BY DON CAMPBELL, THANA DHARMARAJAH NEVIL HUNT AND LAURA MUELLER Garbage in Ontario is a mess. Durham and York are building a controversial incinerator to burn 140,000 tonnes of garbage a year. On Nov. 7, the provincial Ministry of the Environment gave the go-ahead for Orgaworld — the facility that processes Ottawa’s organic waste — to accept diapers, dog waste and compostable plastic bags but the City of Ottawa has yet to give the green light. Simcoe County — a community that attracts vacationers and retirees — faces a dire situation with less than six years of life left for three of its four landfills. Communities are flailing as they try to manage waste within their own borders. Some are already sending garbage out of town. Some are still working on setting waste diversion targets. Others are revising them. And some like the Region of Waterloo don’t have waste diversion targets at all. At least six communities surveyed by Metroland (for this Special Report on provincewide Trash Troubles) have landfills that will run out of space within 10 years. The mountains of trash that Ontarians are throwing into the garbage instead of their blue boxes are forcing other communities to try to find more space in their already bulging landfills. But the Metroland report shows new landfills are difficult to build because government of Ontario approvals required to create new facilities are hard to get, lengthy and costly. “You can spend six, seven, eight years preparing and not get an approval at the end of the day,” said Adam Chamberlain, a Toronto environmental lawyer. “Approving a landfill in Ontario is not for the faint of heart.” In fact, the Ministry of Environment hasn’t approved a single new landfill site since 1999. During that time 147 small landfills have closed, leaving Ontario with 958 existing active landfills. But many of those are small and not classified as capable of taking on a major municipality’s trash. About 85 per cent of Ontario’s
waste goes to only 32 Ontario landfills classified by the ministry as “large.” The main reason trash is creating problems is that municipal landfills are filling up with garbage that should be recycled or reused, including cardboard, plastic bottles, milk cartons and paper. The biggest offender is plastic. A report by Stewardship Ontario shows that about 176,500 tonnes of plastics — including 30,906 tonnes of plastic bottles — were chucked into the garbage instead of the recycling box in 2009, the last year for which provincewide figures are available. That means three-quarters of all that plastic — including 44 per cent of plastic bottles — ends up in landfills. Another culprit is paper packaging, the cardboard boxes and milk and juice containers that could be recycled as well. About 34 per cent of that material, or 122,396 tonnes, ends up in landfills too. One Ontario landfill operator, Bob Beacock, regularly spots these recyclable items as they tumble out of the garbage trucks at the Brock site, east of Toronto. But he only has time to rescue the odd scrap metal or tire. “We can’t just get out of the machine and start picking out pop cans,” the Brock site operator said. “You just know you’d be here 16 hours a day. That’s the public’s obligation.” Like most municipalities, Ottawa is trying to send less trash to landfills. The key is diverting waste to other places – recycling and composting – and that requires residents’ involvement. Reducing the use of landfills can save taxpayers money because new landfills come with hefty costs. It’s up to cities and towns to convince residents that the cost-savings are worth the effort of recycling or composting, or that their efforts can have a positive impact on the environment. “Do we do it to save money on our taxes or do we do it because it’s the right thing to do?” asks Marie McRae, an Ottawa city councillor and chair of the city’s environment committee. McRae said the Trail Road landfill – which takes Ottawa residents’ solid waste – will be full at current rates by 2035. Use of the black, blue and green bins could extend that by years or even decades.
Starting in November 2012, Ottawa residents will see a change in pickups: • Green bin every week. • Black and blue bins on alternate weeks. • Other solid waste once every two weeks, although people can request weekly pickup in certain circumstances, usually when the home is producing diapers. McRae estimates the city and its taxpayers will save $9 million annually by going to biweekly garbage pick-up. She said biweekly garbage collection will trigger greater use of the green bin because it will offer residents a way to dispose of “yucky stuff ” every week. “Not everyone will participate,” she said, “and we expect
the people who are recycling and composting now are likely to do it more.” Marilyn Journeaux, the city’s manager of solid waste services, said the best case scenario would see residents reduce the current solid waste going into the Trail Road landfill; saving tax money and helping the environment at the same time. Today, Ottawa residents dump 200,000 tons of solid waste into the landfill. Journeaux said that number could be greatly reduced by sending 100,000 tons annually to Plasco for gasification, with another chunk sent to Orgaworld for composting. The city’s contract with Orgaworld costs taxpayers $7 million annually. While the contract allows the city to send 80,000 tons of organic waste for compost-
ing, last year residents only sent 55,000 tons for composting. Residents will need to have a clear understanding of what can go in the green bin when the city goes to biweekly garbage pickup. The city’s website can tell you which items go in which bin, and McRae said homes with children will have another source of information. “There are bins in the schools and the kids are the ones who know which bin to use,” she said. Almost anything can be composted or recycled today, but there is still some confusion. McRae said grocery store bags, Styrofoam or cling-wrap doesn’t belong in the blue bin and should be placed in the regular trash.

What’s behind the red door? That’s what Stittsville and area residents are going to have fun discovering in the coming weeks and months and indeed years. Red Door Country Collections is the result of a desire by three friends who had been working together at this site at the southwest corner of Carp Road and Rothbourne Road in Stittsville to stay together. “We just kind of wanted to stick together,” says Shannon Mayo, one of the trio which also includes Judy Blair and Leeanna Bunner-Gill. With each of them bringing a different creative talent to the table, they decided to open a shop featuring the work of local artisans as well as selling other gift items and services. Shannon has administrative skills while Judy is a skilled artisan. Leeanna, who also operates the seasonal Water & Earth Supply Company at the site, selling natural landscape products, will be providing fresh baking every Saturday morning and will be creating gift baskets at the shop. While Red Door Country Collections opened for business last Saturday, Nov. 26, the three, along with family and friends, had been working for the past several months renovating the premises. This meant painting and repairs to the exterior as well as completely renovating the interior. In these renovations, Shannon wanted a red door on the premises. Leeanna suggested the name reflecting this red door and it stuck. “The whole premise is red door – front and back,” says Shannon about the shop. Yes, that’s right. A red door on both the front, which is clearly visible from the front parking area and indeed from those passing by on the Carp Road, and also on the back which is not as visible to the public but still features the shop’s telltale red colour. The red door dictates much about the shop. The interior paint colours were chosen to accentuate the red door. The shop’s logo is a red door which is also a feature of the price labels on the shop’s items. And the shop’s sign out by the Carp Road features the red door logo. But what also dictates much about the shop is a desire to offer a variety of craft items by local artisans as well

as a selection of gift items. Product is still arriving and the work of more and more local artisans is being included on consignment in the shop’s inventory but Shannon points out that she and her friends are being very selective in what they are stocking in the shop. They not only want variety and quality but want to sell what they themselves like. Indeed, they have found that local artisans have been dropping in frequently to inquire about displaying their items for sale in the shop. This has all happened simply as a result of a sign placed out by the busy Carp Road. Right now, the shop features a variety of items, from handmade wooden bread boards, boxes and picture frames to custom black and white photographs to knitted and crocheted items to handmade glasswork to custom jewellery and more. Gift baskets for any occasion will be prepared by Leeanna, either using items selected from the shop or items

The Huskies are the champs. The Sacred Heart High School Huskies squad defeated St. Peter High School Knights 49-42 in the National Capital Secondary Schools Athletic Association junior girls’ basketball (tier one) championship game on Thursday, Nov. 24. Playing on their home court at Sacred Heart in Stittsville, the Huskies trailed only once and that was for a brief moment in this championship game. In fact, the Huskies started off strongly and had an 11-6 lead with two minutes to go in the opening quarter when St. Peter’s came back with a vengeance, making
it 13-12 before the quarter ended. It was early in the second quarter when St. Peter’s actually went ahead for the first and only time in the game, taking a 14-13 lead before the Huskies re-took the lead and went ahead 27-18 by half time. The Huskies had stretched this lead to 13 points (39-26) by the end of the third quarter. Early fourth quarter baskets by Katie Kennedy and Katie Murphy saw the Huskies extend this lead to 43-26 before the St. Peter Knights started to rally. It was 43-29 with four minutes to go in the game, with the Knights closing to within eight points (43-35) before the Huskies responded with baskets by Katie Ken-

nedy and Chloe Brownlee to make it 47-37 with less than two minutes to play. St. Peter’s did not give up, closing to 47-42 with only 30 seconds to go in the game. A Judy Kalenga basket for the Huskies sealed the deal, giving the Huskies a 49-42 victory and the championship medals and trophy. The Sacred Heart Huskies had reached the finals by defeating Ashbury College 45-22 in quarter final playoff action on Wednesday, Nov. 16 and then beating St. Mark High School 60-18 in semi-final action. The Huskies had entered the playoffs after finishing first in the West Division of the junior girls’ basketball (tier one) league with a record of five wins and one loss.

St. Peter High School had finished second in the East Division of the league with a similar record of five wins and only one loss. Money, food items for Food Bank SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Those attending the Christmas Parade of Lights in Stittsville last Saturday evening, Nov. 26 donated $4,156.09 to the Stittsville Food Bank. This was the total of the funds collected as members of the Stittsville District Lions Club walked along the parade route in their gold and purple Lions vests, collecting donations from the crowd. This was the most funds collected by the Lions in this way at the Christmas Parade of Lights. In addition to collecting lots of smiles
from the crowd, the Lions include among their collectibles a new $100 bill, assorted coins from countries around the world, a number of American coins and event a tooth – yes, a tooth. Besides collecting these funds for the Food Bank while marching in the parade, the Lions also collected canned and packaged food items for the Stittsville Food Bank. Lions Bob and Beth Lewis did the collecting. Thanks to the generosity of parade watchers, they collected food items estimated in value at more than $1,500 to the Food Bank.

It’s called the Christmas Parade of Lights but there’s way more than just lights. Last Saturday’s evening parade which flowed along a Stittsville Main Street lined with an estimated 10,000 onlookers – many families, with youngsters sitting on a father’s shoulders or together with siblings on the curb – not only featured over 50 floats laden with Christmas lights of all colours but also include inflated snowmen, giant candy canes, hundreds of heads covered with Santa hats or bearing reindeer antlers, a couple of nativity scenes, a giant Mickey Mouse in a Santa outfit, two lighted angels flanking the float of, you guessed it, Guardian Angels Catholic School, a giant coke can atop the Sobeys float, balloons in the form of wine bottles and champagne glasses on the Wine Villa float, a tiger waving from, what else, the Giant Tiger float, giant inflated penguins with Santa hats and multiple white Snoopy dogs on the Stittsville Legion float. All of this plus lots of Christmas music, with a number of the floats having this audio attraction, so that onlookers heard such seasonal tunes as “Santa Claus is coming to town” from the Air One Heating and air Conditioning float; “Snoopy and the Red Baron” from the Stittsville Legion float; and “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” from the Brown’s Your Independent Grocer float. And again this year, one of the float which not only lit up the parade route but brought forth “ohs and awhs” from onlookers was the Re/Max Affiliates Realty Ltd. float which belched out flames soaring high in the sky and illuminating its particular portion of the parade route thanks to a hot air balloon power source on the float. This year’s reaction to this vertical flamethrowing float was the same as last year’s – amazement, wonderment and joy. This year’s parade took place
in balmy conditions (at least for a Christmas parade), with the temperature sitting at 8 degrees Celsius when the floats pulled out onto Stittsville Main Street from the School Board Depot lot at 7:07 p.m. Indeed, the unseasonably warm weather no doubt contributed to the huge crowd which turned out for this year’s parade. The only snow in evidence was the artificial snow flakes which were blowing out the rear of the Brown’s Your Independent Grocer float as it moved along the parade route. It took the parade 30 minutes to leave the parking lot and head south on Stittsville Main Street. It was just after 8 p.m. when the final float passed through the intersection of Stittsville Main Street and Abbott Street where throngs of people lined the route several deep, enjoying the parade as they listened to microphone commentary identifying the floats by Mike O’Rourke. And the end of the parade did not mean the end of the evening’s magical happenings. That’s because the parade was immediately followed by a brief ceremony at Village Square Park involving a gaggle of dignitaries including city of Ottawa councillors Shad Qadri of Stittsville ward, Allan Hubley of Kanata South ward and Scott Moffatt of Rideau-Goulbourn ward who were joined by Carleton-Mississippi Mills MP Gordon O’Connor presided. After a spirited rendition of “Let It Snow” by councillor Moffatt, followed by Christmas greetings delivered by each of the dignitaries, it was time for the traditional countdown leading to the turning on of the Christmas lights on the trees at Village Square. Led by Mike O’Rourke and Stittsville Village Association president Marilyn Jenkins, the crowd of over 500 shouted out – 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and at 8:17 p.m., the lights burst on, marking the official launch of the Christmas season in Stittsville.

Shannon is a fan of doing art. “That’s probably my favourite thing to do,” she says, admitting that a dream of hers is to become an artist in her future. Liam Harvey, 12, has been interested in art for several years now. A grade seven student at Goulbourn Middle School, he does art frequently at school. While he has used acrylics, he mostly does sketching. He usually gets his ideas from a book and then does the sketch, trying to make the scene or subject look like it was real. He also has aspirations of pursing a career in art. Also among those with art on display at the art show was seven year old Kelly Song who has just been in her first art class at Art Mad. And why does Kelly like doing art? “Because it’s fun,” she says.

It was wall-to-wall art at the Art Mad gallery at the Shoppers Drug Mart plaza in Stittsville last Saturday. Over 100 works of art, ranging from the simplest of line sketches to more intricate paintings, were on display in a children’s and youth art show. The show winds up the fall classes at Art Mad, giving youngsters a chance to show their work. Classes begin again in the new year. Twelve year old Shannon Smith, who has been taking art classes at Art Mad for about a year, was one of the artists who had work on display in the show. “I really like doing the pastels and the pen and ink is really fun too,” she says about her artwork. She does much of her art in the classes at Art Mad, although she does some at home as well depending on her homework load. Shannon is a grade seven student at Goulbourn Middle School. The new Westwind Public School, which has a capacity of 600 students, includes seven kindergarten classrooms, 18 regular classrooms, a double gymnasium, the Daisey Jinkinson library, wireless network access throughout the school and a barrier free design including an elevator. The school also has energy efficiency features such as a modular air handling system, enhanced insulation in the walls and high performance windows. The interior design of the school is based on creating simple cheerful nodes. The visual connection to the exterior was enhanced by choosing vertical floor to ceiling windows, allowing students of all ages better sight lines to the schoolyard’s wooded area and its indigenous landscaping features.

Named after the surrounding Stittsville subdivision with the library bearing the name of longtime Stittsville area teacher, the late Daisey Jinkinson. Such a possible birth announcement for the new Westwind Public Public not only provides significant data about this new two storey, 4600 square metre junior kindergarten to grade six elementary school on Hartsmere Drive in the south end of Stittsville but also is in keeping with the birthing language which principal Marva Major used in her opening remarks at the Thursday, Nov. 24 official opening, likening opening a new school to a woman giving birth. She said that the official opening – the first formal event held in the school’s gymnasium – was the culmination of “a long journey that has been much like giving birth,” involving both pain and pleasures. She carried on with this comparison, referring to the process of naming the new school being similar to finding a suitable name for a baby from among many great suggestions; telling how satisfying her “cravings” for a dynamic and passionate staff and creating a welcoming space for all were much like the traditional cravings of an expectant mother which demand satisfying; how others like the
west wind but remain firm and upright, so too students gain the strength and resiliency to remain true to the values that they learn. Westwind Public School Council chair Alison Landon-Mockett lauded the new school for being a place where children feel safe and secure and are proud to call their school. Ontario Ministry of Education officer Glenda Stevenson presented a provincial flag, the red ensign, to the school while city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri presented the school with a framed message from city of Ottawa mayor Jim Watson and Ottawa city council. But she looked back on her “birthing” experience with her new school with nothing but satisfaction. “What an incredible team,” she said about those who were involved in the “birthing” process. “It was truly a labour of love.” “There is so much to celebrate,” principal Major said, noting that the new school will provide support so that each student can be the best that he or she can be as well as being a student who cares for others and thinks critically. She said that she is looking forward to the future years when the students will flourish in the best Westwind Tornadoes (the school’s team name) tradition. “Be prepared to be blown away,” she told the capacity crowd 400 in the gymnasium. Ensuing comments by Ottawa Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) chair Jennifer McKenzie, OCDSB director of education Jennifer Adams and local OCDSB trustee Lynn Scott cited the features of the school and voiced its praises. Trustee Scott took the Westwind name beyond its geographical beginnings, saying the symbolism of the “west wind” compares to the journey of students through their education.
