Farmers market open for season JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Stittsville’s farmers market is now open again for another season. It opened up on Thursday, June 3 in the Bradley’s Insurance parking lot on Stittsville Main Street, adjacent to the Frederick Banting Secondary Alternate School, formerly the Stittsville Public School. It will now be operating on Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. throughout the coming months. Bob Oechsli of Alpenblick Farms of Ashton, who is the volunteer manager of the Stittsville farmers market, said that he already has nine vendors lined up for this year’s market. This is three more than last year. There were four vendors on hand at the initial day on Thursday, June 3, featuring meat and vegetables such as lettuce and asparagus. Mr. Oechsli is hoping to have strawberries at the market this week and soon additional vendors for such things as chicken, eggs, maple syrup and honey. He is

also receptive to any vendors who have homemade pickles or the like available, especially if they feature mainly local ingredients. The farmers market began at this location last year as an organic market but Mr. Oechsli says that the organic label is very limiting in terms of the vendors that he can attract. This year the market is not restricted to organic vendors. Mr. Oechsli is encouraging organic vendors to put up a sign indicating the organic nature of their produce. He is also encouraging other vendors who are selling locally grown produce or food to put up a sign proclaiming this. Mr. Oechsli is happy with the support that he is receiving for the farmers market from other businesses in the community. Bradley’s Insurance not only provides the use of its parking lot but also covers the market’s insurance requirements. The Stittsville Home Furniture store is providing signs and is advertising the farmers market on its own sign.

A Christmas gift for Stittsville JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF

The Stittsville community now knows what it is getting for Christmas from the city of Ottawa. “This will be a Christmas present for the residents of Stittsville,” city of Ottawa councillor Diane Deans, FARMERS MARKET, SEE 3 chair of council’s community and protective services

committee, said in her remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony for Stittsville’s new fire station on Iber Road last Friday morning. It is expected that the new 12,250 square foot, three bay fire station at 34 Iber Road will be completed and operational sometime soon after Christmas. CHRISTMAS GIFT, SEE 2

The groundbreaking ceremony saw councillor Deans, along with fellow councillors Shad Qadri of Stittsville and Peggy Feltmate of Kanata South, mayor Larry O’Brien and Ottawa fire chief John deHooge, wearing hard hats and using shovels, move the first earth on the site, albeit small shovelfuls of the site’s surface. Construction activity by McDonald Brothers Construction of Stittsville should soon be making much more of an impact on the site. In his remarks at the ceremony, chief deHooge said that the new station will help meet the needs of the growing community of the Stittsville area while also being environmentally sensitive and architecturally attractive. “It will be the gateway to the Stittsville community,” he said about the new fire station which will be located on the west side of Iber Road just south of Hazeldean Road. City of Ottawa mayor Larry O’Brien said that the new station, the first one built in Ottawa in accordance with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver

criteria, is one more indication that residents are living in a safe, clean and friendly city. “This new fire station highlights the city’s commitment to respond to the safety needs of our expanding community,” mayor O’Brien said, while also pointing out that the new station will meet the community’s environmental expectations as well. The new station, to be known as Station No. 46, has been designed to maximize its internal space, reduce energy consumption by hopefully 40 percent and use outdoor light and sunlight to advantage. Environmentally friendly features of the new station will include water efficient landscape design, high energy efficient doors and windows, the use of recycled and natural materials in construction, radian in-floor heating, internal air quality measures and a steel roof that will attract heat in the winter and will reflect heat in the summer. City of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri noted that this new station will eventually serve about 40,000 residents as the Kanata West and Fernbank lands are developed. He noted that the new station will be equipped with three firefighting vehicles,

a pumper, a pumper tanker and an aerial ladder truck. Designed with appropriate locker rooms, offices, a meeting room and a gear room, the new station will be staffed by both career and volunteer firefighters. “The new facility will help provide continued and efficient emergency response times, while its new attractive and environmentally friendly design makes it a key centerpiece in

this growing community,” councilor Qadri said. This new fire station has been designed by the team of CSV Architects (structural), McKee Engineering (mechanical and electrical), Lashley and Associates (landscape), McIntosh and Perry Consulting Engineers (civil engineering), Turnbull Design Consultants (interior) and Cathcart Mechanical Performance.

The Stittsville District Lions Club is donating $500 to the community fundraising

efforts to help four year old Nikolas (Niko) Miceli of Stittsville and his family. The Lions Club executive approved the donation at a recent meeting.

Among other fundraising efforts being made in the community to raise funds to help the Miceli family is an antiques appraisal day which is being held on Sat-

urday, June 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Gendron Antiques and Reproductions. This it eh “Big Red Barn” on Hazeldean Road near Carp Road. Antique experts have donated their time to provide verbal evaluations on items brought in to this antiques appraisal day on June 19. The experts will look at an item for a five dollar charge with a limit of three items per person. All of these proceeds will be going to help young Niko and his family. At the antiques appraisal day, there will be lunch available on the site. This will include hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and bottled water. Nikolas (Niko) Miceli is the four year old son of Renee Asselin and Tony

Miceli of Stittsville. Niko was diagnosed with a brain tumour this past February, just three weeks before his fourth birthday. Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario was able to remove the tumour but some malignant particles have spread to his spine. Niko must now go to Montreal for four months to receive his chemotherapy treatment and stem cell transplant. This means that the family, which also includes five year old Matthew, will need to live in Montreal for four months, in accommodation somewhere close to the hospital there. The fundraising is being undertaken so that the family will be able to do this with no financial hardship, thus being able to focus all

Interesting fall if mayor decides to run Is he or isn’t he? This is the question that city of Ottawa residents have been wondering for a number of months now, namely will current city of Ottawa mayor Larry O’Brien be seeking re-election in this October’s municipal election or not. He has not yet made any formal announcement about his electoral intentions. If he were to seek re-election, he will be up against such formidable opponents as former provincial cabinet minister Jim Watson and longtime city councillor Alex Cullen, both of whom have signed up for mayoralty race. But after seeing and hearing mayor O’Brien in action at an assembly at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville last Friday, we believe that there is little doubt that his name will be on the ballot this October, seeking re-election as mayor. And his campaign theme, we suggest, will go something like this: Larry O’Brien, the mayor who gets things done.

He will point to the light rail transit project and the Lansdowne Park revitalization as major accomplishments during his term. Indeed, he will probably call them both “city changing” projects, just like he did at his Sacred Heart presentation. He believes that both have long term positive implications for the city and its residents. But beyond this, the mayor will point to initiatives like beginning the process to stop sewage spilling into the Ottawa River as further proof of his effectiveness as mayor. He likes the new green bin project as well and it fits in particularly well with his proclaimed opposition to any new landfills in the city. He also has the Plasco waste-to-energy project in his back pocket, a new way of dealing with waste that the mayor no doubt is keeping his fingers crossed will turn out to be operational and effective. The mayor’s campaign will also no doubt contrast this record of achievement, especially with major “city changing” projects, done in a rookie term as mayor, to the record of his

major opponents: councillor Cullen and his constant opposition and nik-picking on issues both big and small and former Ottawa mayor and provincial cabinet minister Jim Watson who is a familiar figure at community events and happenings but whose record of accomplishments in the political realm are, at least in the story according to mayor O’Brien, nonexistence or at the very best miniscule. This may or may not be how things unravel during June, the summer and election time in the fall. But if mayor O’Brien does run for re-election, as we now believe, then these upcoming months could be some of the most interesting politically in the city of Ottawa for a long, long time. It is bound to get people engaged and interested and voter turnout will not doubt be substantial. This could have an impact on local ward races, with more likelihood of change and new faces. So, it could be quite a fall this year. In our view, much of it is going to depend on mayor O’Brien and what he announces about his future.

Calling all books JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Do you have some books that you no longer want? Would you like to see them go to help out an organization that does a lot of good work, helping special needs children? If so, then read on – the opportunity is here. Main Street Community Services, a Stittsville-based registered not-for-profit charitable organization that provides programming for developmental delayed and high needs children, is holding a major fundraiser on Saturday, June 26, with a used book sale being the chief attraction. However, the success of this book sale depends on more donations of “gently used, good quality” books for the event. This includes soft and hard cover novels, biographies, cook books, gardening books, human interest books and children’s books. The book sale will also include DVDs so donations of these are also being accepted. Anyone who would like to donate books for this used book sale should contact Christine at 613-791-1809 or via email at cmr1@sympatico.ca to arrange for pickup of the books. The book sale and related fundraising activities are going to be held

on Saturday, June 26 at the Stittsville Lions Club hall on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville. While there are going to be plenty of tables full of used books, Main Street Community Services is also hoping to have related activities such as a bake sale, cake auction, a lemonade stand and a hot dog sale. Vendors are also going to be able to arrange for a table on which to display their small business products. More information can be obtained by contacting Darlene Macdonald, who looks after fundraising for Main Street Community Services, at 613-831-6606 or via email at Darlene@mainstreetcommunityservices.com Main Street Community Services, founded by Shelley-Anne Steinburg, operates four therapeutic behaviour respite homes, an after school program, social skills training, developmental respite, a social skills summer day camp and a mentoring program. It also provides individual and family counseling. Main Street Community Services operates (except for the summer months) out of the rear of the former Stittsville Public School (now Frederick Banting Alternate Secondary Program) on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville.

AT SACRED HEART HIGH SCHOOL

Students question mayor, give cheer on CFRA radio JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Sacred Heart Catholic High School students got more than just a session with city of Ottawa mayor Larry O’Brien last Friday. They also got on CFRA radio. It all happened because the mayor had to take a brief time-out during his time with about 300 students in the school’s performing arts theatre to be on CFRA radio to proclaim the day as “Food Aid Day in Ottawa” and to urge residents to support food banks. However, the broadcast of his interview with CFRA’s Mark Sutcliffe during which he called Sacred Heart “a really fantastic high JOHN CURRY PHOTO school” and explained that he was at the Sacred Heart Catholic High School principal Cindy Owens, centre, and city of Ottawa Stittsville ward school that morning to talk to the students councillor Shad Qadri, right, hold the book about the city of Ottawa which mayor Larry O’Brien, left, about how municipal government and polipresented to the school during his visit there last Friday. tics work.

City of Ottawa Councillor Reports By Shad Qadri, Councillor Ward Six Stittsville City of Ottawa On June 4, The City of Ottawa marked the beginning of the construction of Ottawa’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEDD) Silver certified fire station, called Station 46 located on Iber Road. Several of my council colleagues, including the His Worship Larry O’Brien, were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony of Station 46 on Iber Road. This is truly extraordinary for our community with this new fire station, which will compliment the outstanding level of service the Stittsville community has received from the current volunteers with the fire emergency services. Our community is growing, and this new building’s look and environmentally friendly design makes it a key component as Stittsville continues to grow. Once new development is complete, the new fire station will serve 40,000 residents. Station 46 will have three bays and be equipped with three fire vehicles – a Pumper, Pumper/Tanker and Aerial Ladder. The over 12,000 square foot building provides firefighters with the necessary space for what the need, such as a meeting and training room, locker rooms, offices, an exercise area and gear room. It also has been designed to maximize its internal space, reduce energy consumption - with a 40-percent cost-savings target - and use natural resources including outdoor light. The fire station’s environmentally friendly features include water-efficient landscape design, high-energy-efficient doors and windows, renewable, recycled and natural materials used in construction, radiant infloor heating, attention to internal air quality and a steel roof that attracts heat in the winter and reflects heat in the summer. Hazeldean Road weekend closure from Terry Fox to Iber/Huntmar As part of Phase I of the Hazeldean Road

The interview, which started on air at 9:10 a.m. and lasted for two minutes, also gave the assembled students the chance to give a big cheer on air when Sacred Heart’s name was mentioned on the broadcast. This radio interlude in the mayor’s visit was also a graphic example of some of the duties and responsibilities which the mayor has. “That’s what it’s like to be mayor,” Mr. O’Brien told the students as he returned to the theatre stage to continue his presentation and then to answer questions from the students. In his presentation, the mayor explained that there are four parts to the mayor’s job. One deals with protocol as the mayor of the nation’s capital. STUDENTS QUESTION, SEE 9

New fire station for our growing community widening project, the contractor, Thomas Cavanagh Construction Limited, is permitted to arrange for weekend closures of Hazeldean Road between Terry Fox Drive and Iber/ Huntmar Road. This section will be closed from 6:00 am on Saturday June 12, 2010 to 6:00pm Sunday June 13, 2010. This closure is to facilitate the watermain and sewer crossing works along with the associated utilities across the existing Hazeldean Road. Local access will be maintained, including the Kevin Haime Golf Centre. However, there will be no through traffic. Detour routes will be signed and OC Transpo service will follow the signed detour. land known as 5343, 5351, 5355, 5357 and 5371 Fernbank Road located on the northwest corner of Terry Fox Drive and Fernbank Road. The proposal is to rezone the subject lands from Development Reserve to General Mixed Use Sub zone One with exceptions to permit a gas bar, car wash, automotive service station, amusement centre, garden centre, outdoor commercial patio and a shopping centre. This land is within the Fernbank Community Design Plan area and has been identified for neighbourhood commercial development and stormwater management. For more information, please contact the City Planner, Cheryl McWilliams at Cheryl.McWilliams@ottawa.ca or 613-5802424 x30234 or myself. Comments can be submitted until June 28.

Seniors’ Canada Day breakfast I would like to invite the seniors of our community to attend my annual Canada Day breakfast. The event will take place from 8 am to 10:30 am. The volunteer fire department has once again generously opened their doors and invited us in for the festivities at the Fire Hall on Stittsville Main Street. Dave Smith of Nate’s Delicatessen will be on hand to provide yet another delicious breakfast, while the Schmodka’s will once again delight everyone with their musical talents. Please mark your calendars and join me for a delicious breakfast to celebrate our nation’s birthday. Space is limited, so please contact my office at 613-580-2476 to reserve your spot.

Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back…Relay for Life! It’s that time of the year again with the Relay for Life event in Stittsville. It begins on Friday, June 18 at 7 pm and concludes on Saturday, June 19 at 7 am at Sacred Heart High School. The Relay for Life event in our community has proved successful in the past thanks to a number of dedicated volunteers who work for months to get the event organized. Last year, close to 60 teams raised nearly $200,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society and we hope to have even bigger numbers this year. I hope to see you all there and show your community spirit for a great cause.

Fernbank Road Zoning By-law Amendment Proposal A Zoning By-law Amendment has been submitted for approximately 8.5 hectares of

Happy 10 years Guardian Angel At this time, I would like to wish all the staff and students, past and present, at Guardian Angel Catholic School, a happy 10-year celebration. The exciting, outdoor event takes place on June 16 where community members, teachers, parents and students come together and celebrate the school’s 10th years serving

our student population in Stittsville. I hope you can come out and join us at the event! Encouraging you to continue shopping locally With the construction of Hazeldean Road moving along at a brisk pace, please remember that the many businesses lining Hazeldean Road remain open. I appreciate your patience, as I know it is difficult to traverse the area at this time. These businesses depend heavily on the surrounding community – and that reliance is emphasized during major construction. I recognize it is difficult given the area conditions, but we must continue to offer our support to the businesses along Hazeldean Road, Main Street, as well as those throughout Stittsville. On behalf of Stittsville’s business community, I extend my sincerest appreciation and thanks for your continued support. Always listening and acting on your concerns As your Councillor, I always welcome your keen input and ideas on how we can sustain and improve Stittsville. Please contact our office anytime by phone at 613-580-2476 or by e-mail at Shad. Qadri@ottawa.ca. My ward office is located in the Goulbourn Recreation Complex, located at 1500 Shea Road. The hours of operation are Mondays 9-2 pm, Wednesdays 3-8 pm, Fridays 9-5 pm, and Saturday 9- 1 pm. Please do not hesitate to pay us a visit. I welcome your call or e-mail to arrange an appointment. If you are not part of my electronic outreach list and would like to be added, please contact my office to ensure you receive pertinent information concerning our community.

This involves meeting ambassadors and various dignitaries such as the Dali Lama of Tibet and American presidents such as George Bush (“Yo, mayor,” shouted President Bush to the mayor at the airport, to which mayor O’Brien replied “Yo, President.”). Another component of the role of being mayor involves attending various social and community events as the city’s head. Mayor O’Brien receives invitations to about 3,500 of such events a year. A third component of being mayor involves being the chief executive officer of a two and a half billion dollar organization that makes decisions that affect the lives of 900,000 city residents. The final component of being mayor, in mayor O’Brien’s view, is the political nature of the job and trying to solve community issues while keeping the political agendas of some council members out of the mix. The mayor also dealt in his presentation with three major issues now before the city of Ottawa: the redevelopment of Lansdowne Park, the city’s light rail transit project and the future of waste disposal and landfills. He showed a video of the current Lansdowne Live project, calling it a “city changer” and a project that the city can’t afford not to do. He also talked about the city’s proposed transit project as another city changing matter. He said that the funding for the $2.1 billion project which includes an east/west tunnel through the heart of the city will soon be in place to allow this project to proceed. Mayor O’Brien is also opposed to any new or expanded landfills in the city. He said that the new green bin program along with new wasteto-energy projects are the way to go rather than expanded or new

landfills. “I like the green bin program better than I like landfills,” the mayor said. He also noted that the province will be coming out with new packaging regulations soon that should also help in waste reduction. “I don’t think the future of landfills is very good,” he added. The mayor then answered 14 questions, 13 asked by students and the final one asked by teacher Lukas Shannon, a question which evoked the loudest applause from the assembled students. The student questions involved how he became mayor, how he deals with complaints, sewage dumping into the Ottawa River, residue from waste-to-energy facilities, city programs to ensure that young people’s voices are heard, increased recycling, a ban on smoking everywhere, the future of the Ottawa Exhibition, why he wanted to be mayor, expansion of the Carp Road landfill (It’s all bad. There’s nothing good about landfills,” the mayor responded), the traffic to be generated by a revitalized Lansdowne Park, the status of the beaches at Constance Bay, and incineration of garbage (The Plasco project in Ottawa uses gasification, not incineration, the mayor replied). Mr. Shannon’s question dealt with when the mayor saw the Canadian Football League returning to Ottawa. When the mayor responded that the CFL will be coming back to Ottawa, there was the largest applause of the morning arise from the audience. The mayor said that the plan is for the CFL to return to Ottawa in the year 2013 and that the plan is for the team to be called the Rough Riders, the traditional football name for Ottawa teams. He also noted that the new stadium at Lansdowne Park, if the revitalization goes ahead, may also be home to a professional soccer team.

Life membership for Eric Booth JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF There have been only 21 life memberships in the Royal Canadian Legion awarded to Richmond Legion members since the branch’s formation in 1973. The 21st and most recent of these was presented last Saturday at the branch’s annual charter night dinner and honours and awards night. Life memberships in the Royal Canadian Legion are given in recognition and acknowledgement of the outstanding contribution which these members have made and continue to make to a local Legion branch such as Richmond. The most recent life membership to be awarded at the Richmond branch has been presented to the branch member best known for being the branch’s “in house” bagpiper but this is certainly not his only Legion involvement. The recipient is Eric Booth who joined the Richmond Legion in 1992. As a bagpiper, he has piped at the branch’s cenotaph services on both November 11th as well as at commemoration of special events such as D-Day and VE Day. At all Richmond Legion special dinners and functions, Eric pipes in the head table guests and provides entertainJOHN CURRY PHOTO ment following the dinner. He bag-

piped at each of the cemetery services on this excursion as well as at various official functions. After his return from this pilgrimage, he visited local schools and organizations, giving presentations about the tour. He is an enthusiast for historic military vehicles, particularly of World War Two vintage. He displays these vehicles and wears a period army uniform at various special events such as D-Day anniversaries. He also provides his own World War Two jeep transport for elderly veterans in local parades. Eric designed and built two memorial displays, one for the Richmond Legion and one for the former township of Goulbourn municipal offices. These displays, which are enclosed in a five foot by two and a half foot Plexiglas case, commemorate all those of Goulbourn who were killed in all past conflicts while serving their country. These displays each includes a memorial book of the names of those who died. Eric assisted in the research related to this book. Eric served with the Black Watch Royal Highland Regiment of Canada as part of the Canadian militia from 1981 to 1995. He was part of its military pipe band and performed at events in Canada, the United States and Europe. Eric is a member of the Ontario Provincial Police, including over ten years service as a community services officer. He sang with the OPP’s “Voices in Blue”

singing group for ten years, performing at senior homes, hospitals and community events. In his role with the OPP, he has worked with the Big Sisters, the Sunshine Foundation, Crime Prevention Ontario, the Ontario Special Olympics, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), CHEO (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario), the Ottawa Heart Institute, the Ottawa Civic Hospital Cancer Ward, the Eastern Ontario Car Seat Coalition, the Canadian War Museum and Veterans Affairs Canada. He has received a life membership in the Royal Canadian Legion because the Richmond Legion believes that he exemplifies the true meaning of the purposes and objects of the Royal Canadian Legion in that all of his actions include the real meaning of “Remembrance” and “Lest We Forget.” The announcement of his receipt of a life membership in the Royal Canadian legion brought forth a standing ovation at the charter night dinner. Previous life membership recipients at the Richmond branch of the Royal Canadian legion have been Norm Adams, Don Atkinson, Brian Beyer, Roger Bourgeois, Helen Cowick, Gerry Gauthier, John Harrison, Kay Harrison, Bob Johnson, Maurice Lavoie, John Lewis, Mavis Lewis, Jane Louks, Bob Loverock, Hilda Moore, Shirley Morris, George Murphy, Bert Murphy, John Pickett and Teresa Young.

FOUNDATIONS MED SPA

IN

STITTSVILLE

Catering to customers, giving back to community JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Dr. Suman Khulbe brings a physician’s approach to a spa setting. Her partner, Chelsea Lessard-Lambe, has left a corporate career to become involved in running a spa. They have partnered in the new Foundations Med Spa on Stittsville Main Street across from Vos Trailers in downtown Stittsville not only to provide a unique spa experience for customers but also to give back to the community that they call their home. “What makes us unique really is you find advanced medical protocols in a spa setting,” says Chelsea Lessard-Lambe who grew up in Stittsville and lives in the Jackson Trails area. This stems from the fact that her partner, Dr. Suman Khulbe, has had her own homebased practice for about eight years, focusing on the whole picture of wellness. This kind of care and concern for wellness has been reflected, for instance, in the selection of the product lines which Foundations Med Spa is using. Dr. Khulbe, who is also a biochemist, chose products that have proven clinical results. This physician-level care and concern extends throughout the operation of the spa so that many of the spa’s treatments and procedures can only be offered with a physician involved. So, whether it is acme treatments or skin care or the use of vitamins, for instance, having Dr. Khulbe involved in the spa allows the use of procedures that stem

from the involvement of a physician in the business. This means extra precautions are taken even with such procedures as pedicures and manicures to ensure healthy conditions. All of these require extra equipment, time and cost but Foundations Med Spa is committed to such an approach. “We do have extra protocols that we will be following,” says Ms. Lessard-Lambe. But she quickly adds that the spa will also be doing all the “fun stuff” that is normally associated with a spa. Indeed, the spa’s priorities are a focus on skin care and related advanced treatments; customer service; and having a happy staff. “We want to create a family at work,” Ms. Lessard-Lambe says, noting that the staff spends a lot of time together at the spa and it is important that they are happy, fulfilled and making money. It is also good business practice because it means that the staff stays in place, reducing the need to train new staff and also making customers more comfortable as they are treated by staff whom they know and trust. Foundations Med Spa wants to be a little different as well, treating each customer as a valued patron. The spa will even make house calls in certain situations and will send staff to seniors residences on a monthly basis if requested. “There’s lots of little things we are trying to do,” says Ms. Lessard-Lambe. This is all part of trying to be part of the community and giving back to it. This is why in the three

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF It’s going to be a downright bloomin’ time at this month’s meeting of the Stittsville Goulbourn Horticultural Society. That’s because the meeting on Tuesday, June 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pretty Street Community Centre will be including a Rose, Iris and Peony Show. Horticultural Society members are being encouraged to bring in blooms of these flowers for the show, so it should be quite spectacular and a great opportunity to see a variety of these blooms, all under one roof. In addition, the meeting is going to feature a presentation by Suzanne Patry, owner of Whitehouse Perennials in Almonte. She will be talking on the topic “Grasses and Their Companions.” Everyone is most welcome to attend this upcoming meeting of the Horticultural Society. However, nonmembers will be charged a two dollar guest fee.

Rene Faucher is the Ottawa area father who was paralyzed while playing hockey and is now in rehabilitation. The trust fund is helping his wife and three children as the family deals with the tragic accident and its aftermath. The grand opening, which is taking place on Friday, June 18 and Saturday, June 19, will feature consultations via appointment with Dr. Khulbe and seminars by Dr. Khulbe on non-invasive aesthetic procedures and the healthy pathway to great skins and health. The grand opening will also be offering an opportunity for people to try out the spa’s product lines and treatments. There will be draws for gift baskets and the proceeds from all services offered during the grand opening will go to the Rene Faucher Trust Fund and the Wildlife Sanctuary. Everyone is most welcome to drop in at any time during the grand opening open house on Friday, June 18 and Saturday, June 19 to look around the spa and learn what services and products are offered there. Chelsea Lessard-Lambe and Dr. Suman Khulbe made the decision to have a spa in Stittsville because they very much want to be part of their home community and to give back to that community. Locating in the home-like setting of one of Stittsville’s older homes on Stittsville Main Street, the premises conform to their initial hope of locating in a heritage-type home rather than in a plaza setting. “The space was perfect,” says Ms. Lessard-Lambe of the location which has previously been used as a spa. One added feature is that the home, believed to have been built around 1880, may have a resident ghost. A number of the spa’s senior citizen clients have related stories about the premises having such a ghost. Ms. Lessard-Lambe has not encountered the ghost but believes that if he exists, he is providing positive energy to the premises. “He is a good ghost,” she says if he does exist. One staff member, who had worked for the previous spa at this location as well, knew about the stories about the ghost in the premises. Whenever she has had to work alone upstairs in the evening, she makes a point to talk to the ghost in the hope of keeping him happy and friendly. She has never heard the ghost but she has been taking no chances.

LADIES’ AUXILIARY

OF

RICHMOND LEGION

Meritorious Service Award presented to Mavis Lewis JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF One of the highest awards available to a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion was presented to Mavis Lewis of Richmond last Saturday. At the annual charter night dinner and honours and awards night at the Richmond Legion Hall, Mrs. Lewis was presented with the L.A.’s Meritorious Service Award. The significance of the award was demonstrated by the fact that the presentation was handled by two past provincial presidents of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, Judy Stinson from St. Thomas, who is the immediate past provincial president, and Rose Green of Brantford. They were assisted in the presentation by Richmond Legion L.A. members Joyce Lavoie, Edna Monahan, Shirley Morris, Hilda Moore and Heather Murphy who presented Mrs. Lewis with such items as the Meritorious Service Award pin, certificate and card. Rose Green presented the award’s gold lapel pin (with a ruby) while Judy Stinson presented Mrs. Lewis with the actual Meritorious Service Award medal. Before these presentations all took place, Mrs. Lewis and her husband John, who is a charter member of the Richmond Legion were led around the hall by bagpiper Eric Booth. They then were seated at the front of the hall, flanked by their family members as the prestigious award was presented. It was told how Mrs. Lewis has held various offices with the Richmond Legion’s L.A. going back to 1985. This includes president, vicepresident and second vicepresident. She received her

CHARTER

25 year service pin in 2006 and was made a life member in 1999. She has been a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Richmond Legion since its formation in 1981 and has served as a deputy zone commander and a zone commander for the L.A. for nine years. For years, she has headed the L.A. canteen during Legion events such as bingo and has led the L.A.’s event catering team. As a member of the branch’s seniors club, Club 55, Mrs. Lewis has organized weekly euchre parties. Besides her L.A. involvement, Mrs. Lewis has also been involved in the community. “Mavis has worked endlessly and tirelessly promoting her community,” Rose Green said during the presentation ceremony. This has involved helping the Canadian Cancer Society as a volunteer driver, providing transportation for people in the Richmond area who needed a drive to and from their cancer treatments. She has ceased this just recently but only to spend her time helping her brother and a number of friends with their health issues. She has also helped out at the Canadian Blood Services community blood donor clinics which have been held in Richmond. She serves as one of the community volunteers who work with Canadian Blood Services personnel in staging the regular clinics. In the past year alone, 217 units of blood were collected at the Richmond clinics. Each unit of blood can help up to three people, meaning that the blood donated at the Richmond clinics just in the past year has helped as many

as 651 Canadians. Mrs. Lewis is also an active parishioner at St. Philip’s Parish in Richmond, spending hours of volunteer time serving the parish. All of this – her work with the Ladies’ Auxiliary over the years as well as her work in the community at large and her additional work with the Richmond Legion Branch itself such as serving as its ways and means chairperson – is why this prestigious Meritorious Service Award was approved by the L.A.’s provincial command and presented to Mrs. Lewis last Saturday. In receiving the award, Mrs. Lewis expressed both surprise and humility. “In 1,000 years, I’d never believe this could happen to me,” she said in her acceptance comments. She said that she did not deserve such an honour, pleading that she was just a volunteer who would be helping out and be involved in any case, regardless of any awards or honours coming her way.

NIGHT PRESENTATION

$3,000 for Richmond Legion thanks to L.A. and Club 55 JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The Richmond branch of the Royal Canadian Legion has $3,000 today thanks to the efforts of its Ladies’ Auxiliary and Club 55, the seniors group that is associated with the branch. Both of these groups have made $1,500 donations to the Richmond Legion branch.

The presentations were made to Richmond Legion president Brian Goss at the branch’s annual charter night dinner and honours and awards night last Saturday at the Legion Hall. This presentation of donations to the Legion branch by these two groups at the charter night dinner have become something of a tradition at the Richmond Legion.

a contractor or manufacturer. The projects must be completed before Aug. 31 of this year. The project at Sacred Heart will involve installing energy management technology on existing motors in the school’s mechanical systems. The school has about 30 large motors that basically run the school’s ventilation system. This newly installed technology will recover, store and direct electricity that would otherwise be dissipated as heat waste. As a result, the efficiency of the motors will be improved. It is expected that this improved efficiency will be in the range of 8.5 percent. The Ontario Ministry of Education has implemented this Green Schools Pilot Initiative to promote green initiatives in school buildings. This is meant to help foster industrial development of green technologies. In addition, having these pilot green projects will provide an opportunity to better understand and compare the efficiencies and performance of these green technologies in the province.

Stittsville volunteer firefighters will be on hand to give out free glow sticks as the darkness descends. This is when the level of excitement increases as everyone knows that the gala fireworks display will begin when darkness descends, about 9:30 p.m. Due to last year’s disappointing show, this year’s display is being hyped as sure to be the best ever in Stittsville. Extra effort is being put into the show to atone for last year’s spectacular but brief display.

Motors at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville are going to become more energy efficient. This is because of a motor energy management project being funded by $145,500 from the Ontario Ministry of Education under its new Green Schools Pilot Initiative. One third of these funds are coming directly to the Sacred Heart project of the Ottawa Catholic School Board while similar funding will be going to projects undertaken by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and the Renfrew County Catholic School Board. All three school boards are involved in this motor energy management project with the Ottawa Catholic School Board identified as the lead board for the project. The lead board is required to enter into an agreement with the Ministry of Education that commits the board to negotiating, developing and executing an appropriate contract on behalf of the boards involved in the project with

FOR RICHMOND FAIR

$7,500 grant helps provide more horse stalls JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF There’s going to be more horsing around at the Richmond Fair this year. That’s thanks in part to a $7,500 grant from the city of Ottawa under its Rural As-

sociation Partnership Program. With the help of this grant along with other funds, the Richmond Agricultural Society, which hosts the annual Richmond Fair, will be installing 29 box stalls in its light horse barn. These steel fabricated stalls will be

similar to those already in use in the heavy horse barn. These stalls have the ability to be re-jigged and doubled in number to 58 to be used as standing horse stalls. The Agricultural Society hopes to have these new stalls in place in a couple of weeks at best, although certainly they will be installed by Fair time in September. These new stalls will replace wooden

stalls which have been used in the light horse barn. For last year’s Fair, the Agricultural Society had to turn some light horse show exhibitors away because of the lack of sufficient horse stall accommodation. The new stalls will mean that there will be increased accommodation for light horse show exhibitor at this year’s Fair.

SCHS honours athletes JOHN BRUMMELL NEWS STAFF South Carleton High School’s top athletes have been honoured. It happened at the school’s annual athletics banquet on Wednesday, June 2 when a host of awards were presented. There were 61 individual awards handed out, ranging from most valuable players on individual school teams to most improved player awards, top rookie awards, leadership awards and other recognitions. The sports included hockey, soccer, football, wrestling, girls’ touch football, rugby, basketball, baseball, volleyball, field hockey, lacrosse, cross country running, golf, badminton, alpine skiing, curling, track and field and Nordic skiing. But a real highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Athlete of the Year awards: the Junior Male Athlete of the Year is Michael Dignam; the Junior Female Athlete of the Year is Megan McGuire; the Senior Male Athlete of the Year is Travis Smiley; and the Senior Female Athlete of the Year is Nicky Soucy. The awards, though, do not end there. The prestigious South Carleton Storm Award for a student athlete who has shown dedication to athletics throughout his or her high school years was presented to Kylie Orchard. Matt Simpson received South Carleton’s Chris Stinson Memorial Award for dedication and commitment to South Carleton football. Cameron Fry received the Bob Erwin Scholarship Award which is presented to a South Carleton football or track and field athlete who has demonstrated leadership, fair play and community involvement throughout his

high school years. A special presentation was made at the banquet to SCHS athletic director Paul Gowans who was presented with a special pin recognizing his nomination for the Brian Kilrea Coaching Award at the recent 2010 city of Ottawa Civic Appreciation Awards. The Brian Kilrea Coaching Award goes annually to an amateur coach who has displayed leadership, commitment and excellence in coaching. Mr. Gowans coaches both the SCHS football and wrestling teams. He is also an enthusiastic supporter of the “True Sport” initiative that has been put in place at South Carleton.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The Goulbourn Sea Hawks now boast Canada’s fastest boy aged ten and under in Canada in the 200 metre backstroke event. Jayden Cole won gold in the 100 breaststroke, 200 individual medley, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and the 400 freestyle in the 2010 Eastern Ontario Swimming Association (EOSA) Long Course Regional Championship Meet at the Nepean Sportsplex last weekend. He earned the high point award in the boys’ age ten and under category. In addition, his times in the 200 individual medley and in the 100 breaststroke qualified him for the upcoming provincial swimming champions in Ottawa on the Canada Day long weekend. “His eyes are set on gold,” said his coach Kelly Goddard. “Jayden is now seeded as the fastest ten and under boy in Canada in the 200 backstroke.” At the EOSA Long Course Regional Championship Meet last weekend, two Sea Hawk swimmers, Schae Dunlop and Matthew Hayward both qualified for the upcoming provincial meeting, becoming the sixth and seventh members of the Goulbourn Sea Hawks to qualify. Dunlop, representing the silver group, and Hayward, from the senior group, will join fellow Sea Hawk swimmers Jayden Cole, Abigail Gartland, Aleasha Knight, Elizabeth Hetherington and Nicholas Barry at the provincials. Schae Dunlop bettered the 12 and under 200 metre butterfly qualifying time by more than two seconds, winning a bronze medal while earning her first provincial qualifying time. She also took gold in the 200 backstroke, silver in the 400 individual medley and bronze in the 100 backstroke as well as earning the girls’ 11 year old high point award. Nicholas Barry of the Sea Hawks achieved the provincial qualifying time in the age 11 and 12 year old boys’ 100 butterfly and captured a silver in the 100 breaststroke and a bronze in the 100 freestyle. All in all at this EOSA Long Course Regional Championship Meet last weekend, Goulbourn Sea Hawk swimmers won 12 gold medals, ten silver medals and eight bronze medals while also achieving seven provincial qualifying times. The Goulbourn Sea Hawks, composed of swimmers from both Stittsville and Kanata, train at the pool at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville.

RECORD

Low flow in Jock JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The Jock River had a nearly record low flow at the end of May. Typical May flows in the Jock River are around four cubic metres per second. However, on Monday, May 31, the flow was measured at only 0.6 cubic metres per second. Jock River flows on May 31 have been lower than this only twice in the 41 years that flow records have been kept for the river. The low flow is attributed to the low precipitation which the area has received since January. There

SHELINA ALIBHAI PHOTO

is normally about 80 millimetres of rain in the Ottawa area in the month of May. This past May, only about 35 millimetres of rain fell and most of that was in the first eight days of the month. The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, which has jurisdiction over the Jock River since it is part of the Rideau River watershed, expects that the rainfall last week could result in enough runoff that there will be an increase in the flow in the Jock River, perhaps approaching what would be more normal for this time of year.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Enjoy some strawberries, with either cake, ice cream or whipped cream. And submit some bids for a variety of services and items in a hidden auction. And help raise funds for the Munster United Church at the same time. What a winning combination! And it’s all going to happen on Saturday, June 19 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Munster United Church in Munster. Everyone in the community is most welcome to attend this strawberry social. Fresh local strawberries will be served along with cake, ice cream or whipped cream, all for only $5.50 for adults or $3 for children aged 5 to 12. Coffee, tea, juice, pop and freezies will be available as well. Tickets will be available that day at the door or can be purchase in advance by calling 613-693-1849. The hidden auction of services and items has been made possible thanks to the generosity of local businesses. There will be no minimum bids for these auction items. Bid tickets will be on sale at 50 cents each or three for one dollar. All of the auction proceeds as well as those from the strawberry social will be going to help fund ongoing church operations as well

as to fund a new renovation project at the church. This construction project will involve several changes that will provide a wheelchair accessible washroom facility for the church’s main ground floor level, an extra cloak room and storage space, an easily accessible entrance and a new stairway access from the main floor to the basement area. Demolition of the existing entrance will take place right after the strawberry social and hidden auction. The plans for the new addition and construction will be on view at the June 19th event. It is hoped that the foundation, steps, roof and exterior work on the addition will be completed before the upcoming winter months. The Munster United Church is planning a number of future events including a roast beef fall supper on Sept. 25; a book and bake sale on Nov. 20; a frozen berry sale in Nov.; and a Valentine’s Day dinner on Feb. 12, 2011. Munster United Church, located in the centre of Munster, was built in 1895 after a fire destroyed the previous brick building. The congregation has existed for 185 years since the earliest settlement days in the area when it began as a Methodist congregation ministered by circuit rider Ezra Healey who travelled around the area via horseback.

Sobey’s, Tim Hortons, Boston Pizza at plaza JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Sobey’s. Tim Hortons. Boston Pizza. All well known retail names. All coming to the new shopping plaza proposed for the northwest corner of Carp Road and Hazeldean Road in Stittsville. The plan for the proposed plaza has recently been revised to modify the footprints of some of the retail pads to accommodate a Tim Hortons with a drive-thru facility and Boston Pizza. The plaza is to be developed on a 5.22 hectare (12.89 acre) site with frontage on Hazeldean Road, Carp Road and Kittiwake Drive just west of Carp Road. A hydro line easement corridor bisects the site. There will be a total of six standalone retail buildings on the site as well as 578 parking spaces, over 200 more than the number required by the zoning bylaw. The major building on the site will be a Sobey’s grocery store. Access to and from the site will be from Kittiwake Drive, Carp Road and Hazeldean Road. How-

ever, the Kittiwake Drive access will be limited to a right in, right out and left in turn movements. The Carp Road access will be a right in, right out point while the Hazeldean Road access will allow all traffic movements. A recreational pathway will be constructed within the hydro corridor from the Hazeldean Road/Carp Road intersection northwestward and will connect with the existing recreational pathway within the Timbermere subdivision. The roof line of the Sobey’s store, which will be in the southwest corner of the site adjacent to Hazeldean Road, has been a concern. However, city planning staff notes that the base grade for the Sobey’s store will be higher than the Hazeldean Road. This Sobey’s store will have a variable brick façade on its southwest elevation, wrapping around the back of the building. This will give an appropriate appearance to the portion of the Sobey’s building that will be visible from Hazeldean Road, especially when travelling east.

man was predicting showers last Saturday whereas the long range forecast showed clear weather for this coming Saturday, June 12. So it was decided to hold off on this garage and bake sale until the better weather. The garage and bake sale will now be held

this Saturday, June 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Shea Road in Stittsville. The event will feature a bake sale, white elephant sale, garage sale, 50/50 draw and BBQ. It promises to be filled with great bargains. Everyone is welcome.

Transitway stations, park and ride lots JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF

The stretch of the future west transitway running south from Hazeldean Road to Fernbank Road in Stittsville will have three stations and four park and ride lots. There will be a transitway station on the north side of Hazeldean Road at the future north/south arterial. This station will have a park and ride lot north of Hazeldean Road with up to a 350 vehicle capacity and one south of Hazeldean Road with up to a 600 vehicle capacity. There will also be a transitway station at the future intersection of Abbott Street and the north/south arterial road. A park and ride lot at this location could handle as many as 500 vehicles. There will also be a transitway station at Fernbank Road and the terminus of the north/south arterial. An associated park and ride lot at this location could handle up to 500 vehicles. It has been estimated that there will be a need for at least 510 vehicle spaces in these future park and rides. It has been determined that all four locations should be developed to best capture ridership and reduce land use impacts. Once the transitway reaches the Fernbank lands south of Hazeldean Road, it will be switching from being adjacent to the north/south arterial to being in the median of the arterial. Three options were examined as to where this transition would happen. The options were between Maple Grove Road and Hazeldean Road; south of Hazeldean Road; or north of Maple Grove Road. It has been decided that the transition will happen south of Hazeldean Road for several reasons including the least impact on traffic operations at Hazeldean Road, the opportunity for phased construction and the greatest conformity with the land use plans for the Kanata West and Fernbank lands. The section of the transitway through the Fernbank lands will be the second phase of the transitway extension from Terry Fox Drive to Fernbank Road. This second phase is envisioned to be the route from Scotiabank Place to Fernbank Road. The pre-planning and consultation for this future west transitway extension began last October and will end this month. A preliminary preferred design and its assessment will be presented to Ottawa city council’s transit committee in July. Then public consultation will begin on a draft environmental report which will deal with potential impacts, mitigation measures and other issues. This is expected to take six months.

It’s going to be another summer filled with fundraising for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario for Therien Martial Arts & Fitness in Stittsville. This will mirror what happened last summer when Therien Martial Arts & Fitness raised $5,500 for CHEO over the course of the summer. Now, this summer, Therien’s goal has grown, as has its planned fundraising activities. This year’s goal is to raise over $10,000 for CHEO. The first of these fundraising events will be an “End of School Block Party” at Therien Martial Arts & Fitness on Cedarow Court off Hazeldean Road in Stittsville. Everyone in the community is invited to attend this day-long event with the proceeds going to CHEO. This “End of School Block Party” will run all day long from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, June 28. Youngsters between the ages of 6 and 12 are urged to attend, either spending the whole day at Therien Martial Arts & Fitness or simply drop in with parents to look around, enjoy some games and the BBQ and make a donation to CHEO. For those spending the day, there will be a BBQ lunch and a day filled with martial arts drills, games and activities. The $35 cost for the day will all be going to CHEO. There are only a limited number of

full day spaces, though, so register early by calling 613-831-3622 or email Stittsville@jiu-jitsu.com. The schedule for the day will be martial arts drills and activities from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with no experience required; a BBQ lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and indoor and outdoor activities throughout the afternoon. Partytime Inflatables has come on board and will be setting up a minicarnival at the Block Party, including a couple of inflatable gyms and concession stands for popcorn and cotton candy. All this fundraising for CHEO is being done against this year at Therien Martial Arts & Fitness because CHEO holds a special place in the heart of Randy Cooligan, the owner of Therien Martial Arts & Fitness in Stittsville and Manotick. His daughter Trinity spend a lot of time at CHEO after being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a premature baby. Now, three years’ later, Trinity and her family are all doing well. Randy Cooligan has decided that he would continue to fundraise on behalf of CHEO as a way of paying tribute to the amazing work that is done there as experienced by his own family. “CHEO has made and continues to make a significant contribution to our lives,” Randy says. “The staff is amazing and I can honestly say that without their support, we would have been lost.”

A new transformer station scheduled to be in service in the summer of 2013 will be the long term solution to greater hydro reliability of supply in Stittsville. This new transformer station, to be located somewhere just west of Terry Fox Drive south of the Trans Canada Trail, will not only provide added hydro capacity for the Stittsville and south Kanata areas but will also provide greater reliability of supply for Stittsville due to new distribution lines connecting this station with the hydro distribution system in Stittsville. Currently most of Stittsville is fed via a single distribution station owned by Hydro One. This distribution station on Maple Grove Road is connected to a long 44 KV sub-transmission line which has exposure to failure due to its length. Right now there is no way to restore power to Stittsville customers until the cause of the failure has been discovered and fixed. When the new Hydro Ottawa

transformer station comes into service in 2013, it will mean that electrical power can be restored to Stittsville customers quickly in the event of a failure of the current supply line. Automated switches are going to be installed so that Hydro Ottawa’s distribution system operators will be able to transfer Stittsville’s hydro load to the new supply lines from the new transformer station, all without having to dispatch any crews to do work in the field. This new transformer station will also add capacity to Hydro Ottawa’s ability to meet the hydro demands of Stittsville customers. In 2008, Hydro Ottawa did propose to install a new hydro line along Abbott Street in Stittsville that would have provided some enhanced supply reliability. However, the project did not proceed because of community protests regarding the overhead nature of the new hydro line and its location. The project has now been deferred at the request of the city of Ottawa pending a review of underground wiring options. Hydro Ottawa and the city are continuing to work on

Relay For Life on June 18/19 JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF

Stittsville’s annual major fundraising effort to battle cancer is coming up. The annual Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life will be happening at the track at Sacred Heart High School in Stittsville overnight on Friday, June 18 and Saturday, June 19. This 12 hour overnight event provides an opportunity for people to fight back against cancer by raising funds. It also provides people with an JOHN BRUMMELL PHOTO opportunity to celebrate surKerry Lynn Moore, left, a traffic assessment specialist with the city of Ottawa, and Tom Carmody, vivors and to remember lost right, speed zone manager for the city, flank a map of the Crossing Bridge area of Stittsville which loved ones. shows possible sites for the new “Slow Down” signs which the city wants to erect throughout the The opening ceremony Crossing Bridge area. will get underway at 6:40

p.m. at which time there will be a ceremonial walk around the track by the various teams involved. This is also one of the most colourful times of the event, with the teams carrying banners with the team name and with team members dressed up in t-shirts or in costumes. At 10 p.m., the most moving part of the Relay For Life takes place when luminaries (paper bags with lighted candles in them) are placed around the track. Each one of these luminaries is in memory of a cancer survivor or a cancer victim. The Relay For Life event in Stittsville, as with other Relay For Life events across Canada, is all about

celebrating those who have survived cancer, remembering those who have lost their battle with the disease and fighting back against the disease. It is also a major fundraising event for the Canadian Cancer Society. Last year’s Relay For Life event in Stittsville raised a total of $198,662 to help with the battle against cancer. Relay For Life is an overnight, non-competitive relay which involves teams with members of all ages taking turns running, walking or strolling around the track at Sacred Heart High School for a 12 hour period. Last year 60 teams of ten people each participated in the Stittsville event.

‘Slow Down’ campaign in Crossing Bridge area JOHN BRUMMELL NEWS STAFF “Slow Down.” This is the simple message of a new campaign being launched in the Crossing Bridge area of Stittsville and, in particular, Hobin Street. This “Slow Down! Campaign which will continue over the next year will involve special information signs, digital radar speed boards, community information pamphlets

and enforcement resources. It is all geared at reminding motorists to slow down, not to exceed posted speed limits and to stop for stop signs. This is all being done because excessive speed impacts negatively on a neighbourhood’s quality of life by increasing the risk of collision and injury. Speeding also results in demerit points for the motorist, possibly impacting insurance rates. The campaign is going to involve a newly designed sign urging motorists to slow

down. The sign, developed in Ottawa and, according to Tom Carmody of the city of Ottawa’s traffic department, “unique to Ottawa and the world,” is meant to bring education and awareness to both motorists and local residents. These signs, blue and white in colour, will be placed throughout the Crossing Bridge community between now until the end of November, 2011. In addition, several digital speed boards which show motorists their speed as they approach will be deployed in the area from

time to time. Right now, the city is looking for Crossing Bridge residents who would allow one of these speed boards to be placed on their property for a limited time. Interested homeowners should contact Mr. Carmody via the city’s 3-1-1 phone number. The immediate focus of this campaign will be Hobin Street from Birdstone Avenue through to Belton Avenue. This has been identified as a section of street that is of immediate concern to residents with regard to speeding.
