“Under the ‘B’, ten.” and “Bingo” are some of the sounds that will be heard at this year’s Canada Day celebrations in Stittsville. That’s because the Stittsville Legion, which operates a weekly bingo at its Stittsville Main Street hall, will be hosting a bingo at the celebrations. And the Legion’s presence at the Canada Day celebrations has made its Stittsville Village Association organizers happy, with SVA director Theresa Qadri admitting to being thrilled that the Legion has agreed to host a bingo at this year’s celebrations. It is but one of a number of attractions that will be featured at this year’s Canada Day celebrations which will run from 3 p.m. to dark at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex grounds in Stittsville. The free family zone will include inflatable rides, face painting, games with the Stittsville Scouts, a mini croquet golf game, hay rides and a quiz and crafts hosted by the Goulbourn Museum. Besides the free family zone, the Canada Day celebrations will include a midway and candyland provided by Classic Amusements. There will also be balloon artists and characters such as Batman, Cinderella and Superman wandering around the grounds. The Canada Day celebrations will also feature over five hours of continuous entertainment on the giant stage that will be set up at the GRC grounds. Entertainment will range from highland dancers to Irish dancers to JOHN BRUMMELL PHOTO bands to martial arts demonstrations to singers. Little Ray’s Reptiles will be on hand as well, with his popular Benton Swords grimaces as he goes over the string as he takes part in the high jump event at the track and field day reptile show running from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. CANADA DAY, SEE 2

Capture a little bit of Goulbourn heritage in your camera lens and you could not only win some money but could receive recognition for your photographic efforts. This is all thanks to a new heritage photo contest which the Goulbourn Historical Society has launched. The contest runs from now until Saturday, Oct. 16 which will be the deadline for dropping off photo submissions for the contest at any of Goulbourn’s three Ottawa Public Library branches in Stittsville, Richmond and Munster. The contest is aimed at stimulating interest in the history and heritage of Goulbourn township while also helping to visually document this history and heritage. There are six categories in the contest: historic Goulbourn buildings; “good fences make good neighbours”; old roads and trails; “then and now”; cemetery or headstone scenes; and antiques from attics or sheds. The best entry in each category will receive a $25 prize while the at Guardian Angels Catholic School in Stittsville on Friday, photo judged best overall in the contest will receive a $100 prize. June 11.

on Saturday,

An entrant can submit up to two entries per category, in either colour or black and white. Photographs must be no larger than eight inches by 12 inches. They must not be mounted or framed and must not have been previously published or publicly displayed. There are no entry forms but those entering must affix their names, addresses and phone numbers securely to the back of each submitted print, clearly indicating the category being entered. Additional points in the judging can be earned by the inclusion of concise, accurate historical identification of the photo subjects, with attention to such essentials as dates, locations, family names associated with old buildings and structures and other features useful in situating the photo subjects in their heritage contexts. The winners will be announced at a public event in early November. By holding this heritage photo contest, the Goulbourn Historical Society hopes that the rich social history and heritage of Goulbourn will be more fully documented and illustrated via photography. There will also be food available on site thanks to Amberwood BBQ, Darlene’s Café and Classic Amusements’ candyland. The Canada Day celebrations on Thursday, July 1 will get underway at 3 p.m. with bagpiper Jordan McConnell leading the special guests and dignitaries to the opening ceremony on stage, accompanied by a Royal Canadian legion colour party. The Stittsville concert band will accompany singers Kyle and Joel Curry as they sing the national anthem. The ceremony will end with the dignitaries cutting the Canada Day cake. The Canada Day celebrations will wrap up with a gala fireworks display at dusk (about 9:30 p.m.) that is promised to be the best ever seen in Stittsville. This is due to last year’s situation which saw the fireworks display being disappointing and organizers promising that last year’s disappointment will be made up for in spades with this year’s fireworks display. One additional feature to the celebrations this JOHN BRUMMELL PHOTO year will be free badminton and volleyball in the gym at the adjacent Goulbourn Recreation City of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri, centre, welcomes three youth to Shad’s Complex. Rising singing stars Nathan Haller, left, of Stittsville and Robynn Glockling, right, of Carleton Place are presenting a series of three classical music concerts.

put on by the school. Nathan is the only student from Canada in the school’s vocal class of ten students. Students in the other acting and dancing classes come from all over the world such as France, South Africa and Korea, as well as the United States. He feels that his voice is now at least ten percent better than before he arrived at Julliard. “I probably wouldn’t have gotten this training anywhere else, he says about his studies at Julliard, noting that he and his classmates have all grown and developed in their musical skills during the past year at Julliard. Nathan has enjoyed his first year living in New York City, not only because there are so many musical theatre and opera shows there but also because he has been able to enjoy pastry shops and restaurants that tourists just never get to. “You find these hidden gems all over the place, he says. Now Nathan is teaming up with Robynn Glocking to present this upcoming series of three concerts. Robynn Glockling is a rising star in her own right. She has been studying at Queens University under the direction of Bruce Kelly, an accomplished classical baritone. She began her singing by performing at community events in and around the Ottawa Valley. At the age of 14, she was invited to join the orchestra Symphonium as a solo vocalist. This August, Robynn will be off to the University of Heidleberg to further her classical music development in German. Tickets for any one of these concerts that are coming up are available at The Leading Note in Ottawa, Brush Strokes in Carleton Place, Baker Bob’s in Almonte or Domenic’s Music Store in Kanata. Tickets are $15 for an adult and $12 for a senior or student. This is a great opportunity to see and hear two young rising classical music vocalists who someday will be world renown. And, just think, you will be able to say that you saw them in the summer of 2010 when they were just starting out on their careers. So plan to attend and be wowed by classical music sung by two up and coming local young singers.

Home after completing his first year at the renowned Julliard School in New York City, Nathan Haller of Stittsville is teaming up with another talented young singer, Robynn Glockling of Carleton Place, to present a series of three classical music concerts. They will be joined in these concerts by pianist Frederic Lacroix, who has performed in both Canada and the United States and has appeared regularly on CBC radio. The concerts will be held on three upcoming Sunday evenings: Sunday, June 27 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Carleton Place Zion Memorial United Church on Franklin Street in Carleton Place; Sunday, July 4 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Almonte United Church on Elgin Street in Almonte; and Sunday, July 11 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Bridge on Didsbury Road (beside highway 417) in Kanata. Nathan and Robynn first met two years ago through their voice instructor at that time, Judith Vachon. They enjoyed working together in Judith’s recitals and did a duet in the endof-year show. Both then went off to university – Nathan to Julliard in New York City where he is studying for his Bachelor of Music degree and Robynn to Queens University in Kingston for her Bachelor of Music degree. This August, Robynn will be attending the University of Heidleberg in Germany to further her studies in the German language. Although away at university, the pair kept in touch and eventually had the thought that they should do a concert together. Arrangements were made and a program developed, featuring solos by each singer along with some duets. “It’ll be a really, really good concert, Nathan says, noting that it will be a concert that will feature classical music and the voices of two rising stars in the classical music field, himself as a tenor and soprano Robynn Glockling. Before attending Julliard this past school year, Nathan, who is now 19, had studied with voice instructor Judith Vachon for eight years. She recognized the classical sound to his voice, even at a young age, and that is why he ended up singing on the National Arts Centre stage with Ottawa’s Opera Lyra when he was only 14. But this is also when his love of classical music and the opera developed, a passion that he is now pursuing at Julliard which is right across the street from the famous Metropolitan Opera. Indeed, at Julliard, he is learning under the tutelage of David Clatworthy as well as several Metropolitan Opera coaches. He has three more years at Julliard to receive his Bachelor of Music degree, after which he may pursue his Master’s Degree, especially since his voice will not be fully matured for opera until he reaches 25 to 30 years of age. But right now, Nathan, who graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville last June, is enjoying his time at Julliard and all he is learning there. Although he is aiming at a career in opera, he takes all of the dance, acting and music courses offered at Julliard. To prepare him for opera, he is taking language and diction courses for such languages as Italian, German and French. He is even taking a juggling course which develops rhythm, a concept that can be transferred to singing. For his initial year at Julliard, Nathan did opera scenes and performed in recitals but it is only in his upcoming and future years that he will actually be performing in an opera

DANDELIONS CONSIGNMENT BOUTIQUE

Opens in downtown Stittsville JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF They’re mothers. They’re organizers. They’re community advocates. That’s why it is not surprising that Stittsville moms Jen Bergsma and Christine Kulla have joined forces and, building on their previous ventures together, have opened a children’s consignment shop on Stittsville Main Street in downtown Stittsville. Called Dandelions Consignment Boutique (“because your children grow like weeds”), the shop held its grand opening last Sunday afternoon, just days after the shop first opened its doors on Wednesday, June 2. The shop was bustling with customers and their young children as everyone assembled outside the store’s front for an official ribbon cutting ceremony involving owners Jen Bergsma and Christine Kulla along with city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri.

Councillor Qadri followed up the ribbon cutting by presenting the two owners with a certificate from his office congratulating the owners on opening the new business. He mentioned how it had been a longstanding goal to try to revitalize the downtown business core of Stittsville and this new children’s consignment boutique was helping to do just that, especially with the welcoming and warm feeling that it projected to customers. He said that having such a shop selling gently used clothing for children will add character to the downtown area as it develops as a traditional main street business area. The grand opening afternoon also featured a BBQ, cupcakes and draw prizes. Dandelions Consignment Boutique is offering Stittsville families an affordable means to purchase name brand, gently loved children’s clothing and toys.

The shop’s front area, with its traditional hardwood flooring, features children’s clothing such as girls’ dresses and sleepwear. This front area leads into a second room where the toys, games and books are on display and is a place not only where moms can check out the items but also where youngsters can give them some “hands on” testing as well. Jen Bergsma and Christine Kulla decided to go into business together after having planned and implemented several community functions via their Facebook group, “Stittsville Moms.” This included a pot luck lunch last February and a Mom 2 Mom garage sale in April. Lansdowne Park - what is your opinion? There has been much written and spoken about the proposed revitalization of Lansdowne Park in recent weeks and months. Most, at least those with the slightest interest, should by now have somewhat of a grasp about what is being proposed. The proposal involves restoration of Frank Clair Stadium, retail and housing development on the site and development of an urban greenspace. There are other ingredients such as the return of the Canadian Football League to the city, enhancement of both the Aberdeen Pavilion and the Horticulture Building and continuation of the farmers’ market. Some of the best architectural and urban planning minds have been engaged in the process to try to come up with a result that will transform Lansdowne Park from the decaying and asphalt laden facility that it now is into a world-class

people place that will be a sought-after destination for local residents and tourists alike – a place where they can shop, be entertained and relax. The idea is to transform today’s deteriorating and intermittently used area into a spot that will be a hive of activity virtually around the clock, 365 days a year. Some call this vision; some are calling it folly. It will be up to Ottawa city council in an expected vote before the end of the month to determine the future of this proposal. That this is a private/public partnership should be an asset. Such arrangements are encouraged generally because it means that municipalities can do more with their inadequate resources. In this case, the city by itself would be hard pressed simply to refurbish the stadium. And municipal money spent at Lansdowne means less spending on other

necessary infrastructure upgrades in the city. Some worry about transportation to the site; others worry about the new retail space overwhelming the current commercial sector on Bank Street. Both of these worries have been discounted in recent studies. After months and months of planning and debate, the whole issue is coming down to a city council vote. Stittsville and Goulbourn residents should ensure that their ward councillors, Shad Qadri in Stittsville and Glenn Brooks in Goulbourn, know how they feel about the Lansdowne Park project. Don’t let these councillors operate in a vacuum on this project with its city-wide implications and impact. Let them know by email or phone call. Make sure that your views are taken into consideration.

RELAY FOR LIFE 2010

Blow against cancer JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Another blow in the ongoing fight against cancer will be struck overnight this Friday/ Saturday at the track at Sacred Heart High School in Stittsville as the annual Canadian Cancer Society “Relay For Life” event takes place. Walkers will begin circling the track at 7 p.m. this Friday, June 18, continuing uninterrupted until Saturday at 7 a.m. – 12 hours of walking to raise funds to battle cancer. Included in the event will be the moving lighting of the luminaries, which are candles placed in bags which are placed all around the track. These luminaries are in memory of loved ones lost or in celebration of those who are fighting back or who have survived cancer. Another moving moment at the Relay For Life is always the survivors’ lap which kicks off the event. Survivors walk together around the track, showing that cancer can be beaten. This “Relay For Life” event in Stittsville is one of four such events held in the Ottawa area. Last weekend there were Relay For Life events held in both Nepean and Edwards while an event similar to the Stittsville one will be held in Orleans this coming weekend. The Edwards event, held at Stanley’s Old Maple Lane Farm, is being held for the first time this year.

Last year the Stittsville event, along with the Nepean and Orleans events, raised a total of over $1.4 million for the Canadian Cancer Society and its work battling cancer. It was just 12 years ago that the first-ever Canadian Relay For Life event took place at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa. Since then, the Relay For Life movement has spread across Canada, raising millions of dollars to fight cancer. Funds raised by the Stittsville Relay For Life, along with the other three in the Ottawa area this year, will be used to support ongoing research on all types of cancers. This includes 16 clinical trials and eight research grants based right here in the Ottawa area. ‘GIRLS NIGHT OUT’

Hypnotic fun in Richmond JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Pilots. Jockeys. Models. Body builders. Singers. All of these showed up on stage at last Friday’s “Girls Night Out” event at the Richmond arena thanks to hypnotist Dave Hallett. These were among the roles that those being hypnotized played out, much to the delight of the 800 ladies who filled the arena’s ice pad for the event. The hypnotist was the keynote entertainment for this year’s fourth annual “Girls Night Out,” a major fundraising event

for Friends of Hospice Ottawa which includes a silent auction, a live auction and a meal catered by A.J.’s Catering, along with the hypnotic entertainment. “Anyone can be hypnotized if they choose to be,” hypnotist Dave Hallett said as he began his show just after 9:30 p.m., enticing 20 volunteers up on stage where they sat in chairs. After inducing them into a stage of relaxation, encouraging them to focus on a spot on the ceiling and to take deep breaths, most of them (15 in all) were in a hypnotic state and were off

Coming together for young Niko I want to congratulate our wonderful community for all its work in helping Nikolas (Niko) Micelli and his family. Niko, a youngster from Stittsville, was diagnosed with a brain tumour this past February, three weeks before he turned four-years-old. Niko underwent surgery at CHEO and doctors were able to remove the tumour, however, some malignant particles have spread to his spine. Niko needs special treatments in Montreal for four months. The community of Stittsville has rallied together to help Niko and his family through a number of fundraising initiatives. This Saturday, Line and Mark Gendron of Gendron Antiques, located at 1145 Carp Road, will be hosting a fundraising event for Niko and his family. The event runs from 10 am to 2 pm.

The community is invited to bring antiques for appraisal and also enjoy a BBQ with all proceeds going to Niko and his family. Gendron Antiques is helping raise money so his family can join him in Montreal. Proposed West Transitway connection open house I am encouraging all residents to come to the Goulbourn Recreation Centre, located at 1500 Shea Road, for an open house regarding the proposed West Transitway connection on June 22 from 6 pm to 8:30 pm in the foyer. It affects the Highway 417/Eagleson Road Interchange to March Road and Terry Fox Drive to Fernbank Road. The first phase from Terry Fox to Scotiabank Place is to be built from 2018 to 2023 and the second phase from Scotiabank to Fernbank is set to start in 2021. number of reports looking at all aspects of the proposed redevelopment. You can see each of the reports Council will be considering this month by visiting the city’s website: Ottawa.ca. The battery of information on the site is truly impressive. Public delegations are welcome June 24th and 25th. Council is expected to vote on the proposed project on June 28th. Don’t forget to pick up after your dog Please remember to make it a habit to pick up after your dog when you walk them and take the waste back to your home and dispose of it. Remember, failure to pick up after your dog is a by-law offence as is not taking the waste home and disposing it in your premises. The City encourages flushing pet waste down the toilet and it will be treated properly. Dog owners can also place the waste in their regular garbage as long as it is properly wrapped in absorbent paper and placed in a sealed, leak free bag. Always listening and acting on your concerns As your Councillor, I always welcome your keen input and ideas on how we can sustain and improve Stittsville. Public Open House #3

West Transitway Extension Bayshore Station to Moodie Drive In November 2008, Ottawa City Council approved its long-range Transportation Master Plan which identified the construction of the West Transitway from Bayshore Station to Moodie Drive as a priority project required to address transit operational concerns in the west urban community. In order to implement this project, in February 2009 the City initiated a planning and design study to define a Recommended Plan for the extension of the West Transitway between Bayshore Station and Moodie Drive. This project is being planned in accordance with the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) as defined in Ontario Regulation 231/08. In order to engage the public and obtain feedback into the planning and design for this facility, a consultation program has been developed that includes four Public Open Houses. The third open house will be held on June 23, 2010 to present the Recommended Plan prior to presentation to the City’s Transit Committee. At this time, members of the public will have the chance to review and comment on all aspects of the Recommended Plan including: • • • • • • •

9 Stittsville News - JUNE 17, 2010

After a session involving names (one gave a different name every time he asked; one kept forgetting her name; and one kept telling Dave to “go to hell”, all of these being suggested to them), the volunteers all became contestants in Canada’s next top model contest, following Dave Hallett down off the stage and in a line through part of the audience. Back on stage, now 11 in number, the “hypnotees” had a stint as female body building performers before it was time to sing, with one taking the role of Madonna and two taking the role of Shania Twain (“I feel like a woman”). The show wrapped up at 10:40 p.m. when the last of the volunteers left the stage after a brief time when they could not move their feet as they felt stuck to the floor. But “Girls Night Out” is much more than just an entertaining hypnosis show. Ladies started arriving well before the 7 p.m. dinner time, escorted to their places at tables set up on the ice pad by cheerful volunteer firefighters from area stations. They were able to view the wide assortment of silent auction items, displayed all along the east side of the ice pad. And what a variety of items up for grabs to the highest bidder – furniture, art, clocks, a pair of elephants, a pair of horses, pots and pans, a Coca Cola sign, a bulldog, luggage, lamps, a giant mirror – something for everyone’s taste. Bidding was open right through the dinner and up to nearly 8:30 p.m. when the bidding closed down, just as the live auction began on stage. Before the catered dinner was served, there was a happy, happy moment for Friends of Hospice Ottawa (FOHO) as a donation of $32,960.88 was made to FOHO from this year’s Spike for Life volleyball tournament. This was held last March with 26 teams involved. FOHO chair Beth Ada of Stittsville thanked the Spike for Life organization for its generosity and for providing such a sum to FOHO which is involved in a major capital fundraising campaign for the purchase of a “Hospice Home” at a site in Kanata. This three-phase campaign will eventually see a

residential hospice facility built at the site. Ottawa Valley entertainer Wayne Rostad, who was the MC for the evening, praised FOHO as a “wonderful organization” and as the auctioneer for the evening’s live auction, he did his best to add to the night’s fundraising total. Sounding much like a professional auctioneer as he called for bids on the ten items that were up for grabs in the live auction, he ended up generating successful bids totaling $16,500. This included a handmade afghan, $200; a handwoven blanket, $150; a Casanova overnight package at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata, $375 (two of these were sold); a BBQ dinner for six prepared by award winning Swiss Canadian chef Michael Durrer, $550; a catered BBQ for ten by chef Shawn Traversy, $950; a globe with mother of pearl insets, $425; a grandfather clock, $750 (Wow, that’s a steal,” Wayne exclaimed when hammering down this item which he said was valued at $1,750); a three piece sofa set, $4,000 (two of these were sold); an overnight stay at the Holiday Inn Suites in Kanata, $325; and a Sidney Crosby autographed, certified Team Canada jersey, $2,200 (two of these were sold – “This is the ultimate Father’s Day gift,” Wayne proclaimed). There were also raffle draws including a lucky card draw and plenty of visiting and chatting among the ladies in attendance, making for just a marvelous fun time for everyone. Members of the Goulbourn Kiwanis Club, the Richmond District Lions Club, TD Canada Trust, the volunteer firefighters and others all helped out, staffing the bar, waiting on tables, helping provide the silent auction items to the winning bidders, helping with parking outside and doing all of the other little things that helped make “Girls Night Out 2010” a memorable and fun experience for all who attended. Desjardins Pharmacy and Ontario medical Supply was the title sponsor for this year’s “Girls Night Out.” Bar sponsors were Spotlight on Hair Studio and Spa and Sonja Kinkade Design while table sponsors include Act II Kanata, Alannah Grossman and Friends, Bayshore Home Health, Cox Merritt & Co. The long wait for care Ontario’s long-term care system is paralyzed, and failing its most vulnerable residents. More than 600 government funded homes are supposed to provide high quality, round-the-clock care to the frail elderly. But Metroland’s special report shows seniors stuck on record wait lists, entangled in bureaucracy and subject to pressure tactics that jeopardize their rights. FIRST IN A FOUR PART SERIES

What the terms mean ALTERNATE LEVEL OF CARE (ALC): The designation for patients occupying hospital beds who no longer need acute care. About 60 per cent of Ontario ALC patients are waiting for a nursing-home bed.

LONG-TERM CARE HOMES: Also called nursing homes, they offer more care and support than retirement homes or supportive housing. Licensed and funded by the province. Residents are responsible for monthly copayments.

very day Mimi Michel scans the newspaper classified section looking for death notices of people with Alzheimer’s at Ottawa’s long term care homes. “I’ve become an obit vulture,” said the Ottawa woman. “I check and see if someone has died from a preferred place and if the donation was to the Alzheimer’s Society.” Every death means her husband, Alain, moves up another rung on a list of people waiting for a bed at an Ottawa-area nursing home. And it’s a long list, said Mimi. Her 68-year-old husband has been waiting for a bed for over a year now, ever since he was assessed by a case manager from the Champlain Community Care Access Centre, which is responsible for placing people needing long-term care in eastern Ontario. “They always say at least two years (wait),” said Mimi. Alain is number 38. But he hasn’t moved up the list since April, said Mimi. He is one of 25,000 in Ontario waiting to break through near zero vacancy rates at nursing homes, with some facing a wait of more than 200 days. Until a long-term care bed becomes available, Alain will stay at a local retirement home, at a cost of $4,900 per month. Meanwhile, Mimi must provide the required personal care: taking him for walks, helping him with physiotherapy, helping him to brush his teeth and shower. It’s 24-hour care and it’s exhausting, said Mimi, who retired early to care for her husband. Every day she arrives at her husband’s retirement home at around 7:30 a.m. and stays until 5 p.m. or later. “I’m here all day everyday,” said Mimi. Help is expensive. A personal care worker, someone to just sit with Alain, charges more than $25.95 per hour; a registered nurse charges at least $52 an hour, said Mimi. The community care access centre provides eight hours a week of personal care for her husband. “If you don’t have any money you’re screwed,” she said. “Right now I’m digging through my savings and investments and I’m looking at possibly selling my house.” The year-long wait has been exhausting financially, physically and emotionally, said Mimi, adding that she is frustrated with the endless red tape involved in finding a placement. “It’s not only the bureaucracy on the placement side but the bureaucracy on the health side as well,” she said. A growing number of vulnerable Ontar-

MAKING SENSE OF IT ALL

LONG STAY NURSING HOME BEDS: Occupied by residents for an indefinite period.

SHORT STAY NURSING HOME BEDS: Occupied for no longer than 90 days a year.

INTERIM BEDS: Temporary beds for patients awaiting long-term care, one of the solutions being tried by the government to get ALC patients out of hospitals. Stays of up to 120 days are allowed, with extensions of up to 60 days.

RETIREMENT HOME:

The stories on pages 10 and 11 are excerpts of the full text. To read the entire report, go to www.yourottawaregion.com ians are trying with little success to find what they need in a long-term care system that is overwhelmed, unwieldy and tangled in red tape. Health Minister Deb Matthews agrees there are problems, but says it will take time to turn the system around. The province’s $3-billion-a-year network of government-licensed, publicly supported nursing homes is meant to provide highquality care to Ontario’s most fragile and medically needy residents. Situation Critical — a Metroland Special Report — shows a system in paralysis, with only one nursing-home bed in 100 available across Ontario, and with an average wait as high as 200 days in some areas. A $1.1-billion government program, created three years ago to make home support more widely and easily available, was supposed to ease the problem. Instead, wait lists have expanded, leaving more seniors in need of long-term care at home, and thousands more taking up hospital beds with nowhere to go. From 2007 to 2009, the average wait time for a nursing-home bed in Ontario more than doubled, from 49 to 109 days.

The provincewide tally of people waiting is now more than 25,000 and rising, doubled from 12,000 in 2005. The supply of new beds is static, with annual growth of less than 1 per cent. Only 900 more beds are expected to be available in nursing homes over the next 24 months. The average wait for a long term care bed in the Champlain region is 161 days. Only 35 per cent get their first choice of home. For hard-to-place seniors with a need for a higher level of care, waits can be two or more times the average. In rural areas and Northern Ontario, families may be separated by hundreds of kilometres, if there are beds at all. On average, less than 40 per cent of applicants get their first-choice home. Matthews, the health minister, says she is aware “we do have work to do in the access to long-term care homes.” “We know that people are waiting a long time to get into a long-term care home. But, we also know that with the right investments, we can actually keep people at home longer.” Matthews says the ultimate solution is to rely more on care at home, and to make more use of shorter-term “restorative” beds. By February, Ontario had 813 of the interim beds Matthews referred to, in nursing homes, hospitals or hospital-managed sites, and more are planned, the ministry says. In such placements, the elderly are “building their strength up, they’re getting healthier, and are actually, many of them, going home, those who would have otherwise thought they were going into longterm care,” Matthews said. See ‘Bureaucracy’ page 11

Private-pay rental accommodation for those who need minimal to moderate support. Ontario passed legislation this month to regulate this sector for the first time.

LOCAL HEALTH INTEGRATION NETWORKS: The 14 LHINs are regional, nonprofit bodies funded by government to plan, disperse funding and co-ordinate services delivered by hospitals, long-term care homes and other agencies.

COMMUNITY CARE ACCESS CENTRES: The 14 government-funded CCACs are the agencies Ontarians must use to obtain home care, long-term care and other publicly delivered services.

CHRONIC CARE: Also called complex continuing care, it is medically complex and specialized care over extended periods not available at home or in nursing homes.

LONG TERM CARE HOMES ACT: A new law to replace Ontario’s three previous sets of legislation: Nursing Home Act, Homes for the Aged and Rest Homes Act, and Charitable Institutions Act. Among many measures, the new law strengthens enforcement and clarifies how a resident’s care is to be delivered, monitored and reported. The government is giving $30 million in one-time funding to the long-term care sector to help it adjust to changes under the new act.

SOME BEDS TO BE MODERNIZED: Ontario said this spring it will renovate 4,183 existing beds in 37 long-term care homes, part of a plan to redevelop 35,000 older beds over a 10-year period.

Continued from page 10 The Metroland investigation also found bureaucracy is such an obstacle that consultants to industry and the U.S. military are being retained to help improve the process of moving people into nursing homes. Some efficiency methods being tried in Ontario are adapted from the assembly lines of the Toyota car company. One study counted 160 distinct steps, including access to nine separate databases, just to move a senior from hospital into a long-term care bed. Done by Orillia consultant Jeff Doleweerd from observations at Quinte Health Care’s Trenton Memorial, that 2008 study - sponsored by the Toronto-based Change Foundation — identified wasteful steps that occur in hospital before patients leave for a nursing home.

the free flow of the elderly into nursing homes. Susan Bisaillon, executive director of clinical operations of Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga, says the Lean exercise with Bercaw helped identify waste. In 2009, Trillium had as many as 131 seniors earmarked for nursing-home care in its wards, and a “consistently gridlocked” emergency room, recalls Bisaillon. Bercaw had staff place coloured sticky notes on a wall to recreate every step in a patient’s journey to either a long-term care bed or home. There were 82, and only 16 added real value for the patient. It was an “ah-ha moment” proving Trillium’s processes needed a major overhaul. “We realized that it was just totally flawed,” Bisaillon says.

One study counted 160 distinct steps, including access to nine separate databases, just to move a senior from hospital into a longterm care bed.

generation will hit 75. By 2036, the number of Ontarians 75 and over will rise to 2.2 million, from 850,000 today. New regulations come into force next month in a modernized piece of longterm-care legislation in the works since 2003. Ministry officials hope the regulations will spur significant change.

Once in a home — despite the system’s ailments — most residents rate the care as satisfactory, according to a 2009 survey by the Ontario Health Quality Council. Getting through the door remains the major challenge. With files from Blair Edwards

THE ‘LEAN’ TECHNIQUE STRETCHED TO THE LIMIT Efficiency consultant Ron Bercaw has adapted a Toyota assembly line technique to help streamline the process of getting Ontario’s elderly out of hospitals and into nursing-home beds. Bercaw first adapted the “Lean” technique to save a failing auto-parts plant he managed in Ohio, and then taught it to 30 Ontario hospitals and CCACs in the last 21/2 years. His tools include streamlining procedures he executed for the defence industry and at the Pentagon. Bercaw’s “kaizen” (“change for the better”) events help health administrators see unnecessary steps that prevent

Metroland also found that those fortunate enough to secure a placement are cared for predominantly by overwhelmed personal support workers for whom a lack of provincial regulation means inconsistent training, lack of accountability and a backbreaking work pace that often removes the opportunity for meaningful personal contact. Nursing home staff in general are stretched to the limit, the result of years of understaffing and a steady influx of older and sicker residents. That trend will continue. In a decade, the first of the baby boom

Senior endures months at Mission before finding his space Wait times for city’s subsidized housing tops seven years or longer JENNIFER MCINTOSH jennifer.mcintosh@metroland.com

When he was young Terry Williams never expected to face living his twilight years on the streets of Ottawa. However that’s just what the 66-yearold Newfoundlander was facing last October after a divorce and some financial difficulties left him with few options. An easy-going guy, Williams said he occasionally likes a beer and a smoke and looks forward to having his own space after eight months at the Ottawa Mission — a non-profit, faith-based client service centre, for the city’s poor and destitute men. “They were really good to me here,” he said. “They really help you if you want to help yourself.” With his hair combed and a clean black t-shirt framing a wooden cross he constantly works his hands over, Williams doesn’t look like your average homeless

man. But Williams — like so many in his situation — lost touch with the community, and with it, a lot of his support systems. “I never had no kids,” he said. Algonquin grad, Wendy McCarl says that while seniors only represent about five per cent of the Mission’s total clientele, it can be hard to connect them with the right services. “A lot of them don’t even have the basic things like identification,” she said. “And it can be hard to convince them that there is another way to live.” One of McCarl’s biggest challenges is finding housing, both for seniors and young men alike. There are thousands of people on the city’s subsidized housing list, with a wait time of seven years or more. Added to that the complexity of placing seniors who may need special at home care of closer proximity to health care services, the odds often seem insur-

mountable. Seniors make up eight per cent of the people using emergency shelter in the city during an average annual year according to an Ottawa Council on Aging report in 2008. As rental costs climb and housing becomes costlier, those numbers are apt to climb. The same report, using 2001 census data, suggests that 41 per cent of seniors who were renting were in inadequate housing to meet their needs, or were spending more than 30 per cent of their annual income on rent. Senior renters were spending an average of 45 per cent of their annual income on rent. “It can be tough to keep up as you get older because you can’t work as much to make more money,” Williams said. Williams added after moving into his own place and getting settled he plans to continue visiting the Mission for meals and to stay in touch with friends. And he may

SINGING, GYMNASTICS, JUGGLING

‘Holy Spirit’s Got Talent’ - you bet JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The four words in big blue letters surrounded by stars seen right behind the performance area in the school’s gym said it all: “Holy Spirit’s Got Talent.” And that’s what was on display on Thursday evening, June 10 as a talent show was staged at Holy Spirit Catholic School in Stittsville. And what a show it was! There was dancing and singing but also there was much more: Rhianna McNammee, Olivia Boudreau, Alexander Larwill and Amy MacNeil all demonstrated their talent on the piano keys; Julian Lowery and Mitchell Lowery played a violin duet; and Shelby Morris and Charlotte Marks both showed their skill at Irish dancing. But it did not stop there – the talent kept coming.

This involved gymnastics as Tamara Condie and Hannah Matheson performed jumps and hand stands in their duo routine. Later in the program, Danielle Sinclair demonstrated more gymnastics. There was a musical theatre number featuring Maria Romano and students Holly Reid, Nicole Keay, Catherine Lipiec and Lauren Bafia gave a cheerleading demonstration. There was even a mime performance by Michael Rowan and Brent Goodwin. Mark MacIsaac and Zach Brown did a comedy routine while Ryan Dempsey did a drum solo. Mikhaila Kavanagh showed her juggling ability while Charles Ojeda performed as a guitar soloist. Other students who sang or danced in the talent show included Jayden Cole, Danielle Theoret, Megan Kavanagh, Laura Marsden, Sierra Wilson, Julianne Roche, Gregory MacNeil, Kelsey Pokoj, Rachel Coligan,

Delia Keirans, Laura Walsh, Holly Reid, Hannah Matheson, Lauren Bafia, Grece Lilly, Cassidy Chadder, Chloe Despatie, Tierney Sterling, Sasha Thomson, Molly Martel, Caitlin Doirion, Lahra Johnston, Annabel Durr, Ashley Matheson, Kampbell Pristanski, Jordyn Lindsay, Madison Refausse, Anne Akin, Jenna Larkin, Grace Mullin Cote, Grace Lilly, Kristina Toppari, Katie Lefebvre and Monica Lawczys. Students Laura Walsh and Lauren Bafia were the MC’s for the show. Participants in the talent show were selected through a process that started in each classroom. Each student had an opportunity to participate in a class talent show. Students then voted for the top performers in their class, with the top three performers from each class moving on to this school-wide talent show on Thursday, June 10 where so much talent was on display.

Stittsville is getting second PetroCanada JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF

Stittsville will soon have a second PetroCanada gas station. The former Sunoco gas station at the southeast corner of Hazeldean Road and Carp Road is now in the process of being switched over

to the PetroCanada label. That is why the station has been closed down in recent days. This will be Stittsville’s second PetroCanada station as there already is a PetroCanada station at the Jackson Trails Centre plaza at the northwest corner of Hazeldean Road and Stittsville

Main Street. PetroCanada did have plans to locate a gas station at the northwest corner of Hazeldean Road and Iber Road but now apparently has dropped these plans with the re-branding of the former Sunoco station at Carp Road and Hazeldean Road to the PetroCanada name.

Repeat for SC Storm JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF

The Storm has not abated on the diamond. For the second straight year, the South Carleton High School Storm baseball team has won the National Capital Secondary Schools Athletic Association tier two championship. This team has gone unbeaten in two seasons now, compiling a record of 19 wins and a tie over the course of 20 games. The SCHS Storm won this year’s championship on Monday, June 7 at the Hamilton Yards diamond at the Nepean Sportsplex, defeating the A.Y. Jackson Secondary School squad 8-2. Once again in this game, great pitching and great defense were the story for the Storm, although a clutch late game two run home run over the left centre field fence by the team’s leading hitter, Kyle Craig, was a key blow in the game. The Storm’s starting pitcher Tyler Roth threw four scoreless innings to start the game, continuing his dominance on the mound this season as he allowed only one earned run in 26 innings of work. Meanwhile, the Storm’s defense was nearly faultless, making only one error while catching three A.Y. Jackson base runners stealing. Two were thrown out by Storm catcher Wren Bradley while Brandon Smith, the Storm’s second pitcher of the game, picked off a third A.Y. base runner. Kyle Craig came on to pitch for the Storm in the top of the sixth inning with two outs after A.Y. Jackson had scored two runs in the inning and had the bases loaded. He got the batter to ground out on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning. The South Carleton Storm compiled a record of six wins and no losses in the regular season, playing in the far west conference of the tier two league. In the ensuing playoffs, the Storm defeated John McCrae Secondary School 4-1, advancing to quarter-final action against St. Paul High School, a game which ended 6-2 in favour of SCHS. In semi-final playoff action, the Storm defeated Ecole Franco Cite 14-6, with five of the Franco Cite runs coming in the seventh inning with SC holding a 14-1 lead. This victory took the SC Storm to the championship final against A.Y. Jackson Secondary School. This season SC Storm pitcher Tyler Roth finished with a record of five wins and no losses, along with one save. His overall earned run average in a total of 26 innings was 0.27. Kyle Craig led the team in hitting with 17 hits, a .531 average, 16 runs scored, 16 RBI’s and a 1.031 slugging percentage. Playing for the SC Storm this season were Brandon Smith, Ben Graham, Holden Wright, Tyler Roth, Cole Usher, Brendan Cowan, Jeff Craig, Kurtis Baker, Wren Bradley, Kyle Craig, Zack Dano and Alex Sample. The team was coached by head coach Blake Claydon along with coaches Andrew Solomon, Jeff Craig Sr. and Jim Claydon.

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at the Perth Street/McBean Street intersection in Richmond on Wednesday, June 2. As the pedestrian walked across Perth Street at the intersection, shortly after 5:30 p.m., a motorist turning left on the green light from McBean Street struck her with the left side front corner of

his vehicle. At the time, the pedestrian was listening to her iPod while crossing the street with the walk indicator. After the impact, the driver left his vehicle and helped the woman. Paramedics arriving on the scene assessed the pedestrian and treated her injuries which were described as minor in nature.

Donation at Parliament Hill JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The presentation happened in the shadow of the Peace Tower in downtown Ottawa but the funds will help kidney dialysis patients enjoy vacations at Camp Dorset near Huntsville. This Lions Club sponsored camp is the only camp in Ontario that caters to those requiring kidney dialysis treatment and their families. It was on Sunday afternoon, June 6 that Stittsville District Lions Club president Jack Burke, first vicepresident Ken Jones and member Don Zogalo travelled to Parliament Hill to meet Sherry Welsh, a member of the South Brant Lions

Club, as she completed her third annual walk in support of the Lions’ Camp Dorset and to present her with a $500 donation from the Stittsville District Lions Club. Sherry Welsh was completing her 37 day walk from Camp Dorset to Parliament Hill, a total of 600 kilometers. Along the way, she visited numerous Lions Clubs including the Stittsville District Lions Club who welcomed her for supper on Tuesday, June 1. Sherry Welsh and her accompanying driver, Stewart Stanley, left Camp Dorset near Huntsville on Saturday, May 1. The Lions Camp Dorset is currently in need of new and upgraded dialysis machines as the ones now

at the camp are ten years old, with parts no longer being manufactured. Fresenius, the current supplier of such machines, has offered almost new dialysis machines, used for only four months, at a cost of $10,000 each which is half the price of new ones. Camp Dorset needs 20 such machines to keep operating, meaning a total cost of $200,000 for the machines. The deal will also include a ten year maintenance contract on the machines. Sherry Welsh’s walk raised $73,000 in its first two years and the fundraising should be over the PHOTO COURTESY OF STITTSVILLE DISTRICT LIONS CLUB $100,000 mark after this year’s South Brant Lions Club member Sherry Welsh, centre, embraces Stittsville walk. Jumping is the game. A horse is the way. Westar Farms is the place. This is going to be true on three different occasions this summer as Westar Farms hosts its annual series of silver and bronze level horse shows. The first of these horse shows comes up this weekend, Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20 when the “Spring Into Summer”

show takes place at Westar Farms’ Fernbank Road equestrian facility in Goulbourn. Spectators are most welcome to attend each day, with the action starting at 8 a.m. and running throughout the day until about 5 p.m. Just take along a lawn chair for seating and enjoy the show, perhaps sitting in a shady spot beneath one of the maple trees on the site. Refreshments will also be available throughout the day.

Location of beer store, Tim Hortons layout raise concerns JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The proposed location of a beer store in the new shopping plaza at the northwest corner of Hazeldean Road and Carp Road in Stittsville is not going over well. The 6,000 square foot beer store, a yellow building, is being proposed for a site adjacent to Kittiwake Drive as it enters the Timbermere subdivision. Stittsville Village Association director David Jenkins, who handles planning matters for the Association, called the proposed beer store

site “totally inappropriate” when speaking about the matter at the SVA’s June monthly meeting on Thursday, June 10. “The first thing you are going to see is this huge yellow building right at the entrance,” he said about the building’s impact. He suggested that the beer store building should be relocated to another location on the site, preferably in the Hazeldean Road area. He also noted that the beer store, if located where proposed, would be only steps from the Timbermere community park. Timbermere subdivision resi-

dent Peter Mantas, who is a lawyer and was in attendance at the SVA meeting, agreed with Mr. Jenkins’ assessment of the situation. “What a boneheaded idea that is,” he said on hearing about the proposed beer store location, noting as well that it is close to the adjacent playground where youngsters are always playing on a play structure. He agreed that it would be a great idea to locate the beer store elsewhere on the plaza site and advocated that those responsible for the beer store be approached with the community’s concerns about

the location. He suggested that one approach might be for several residents to call up the beer store decision makers and tell them of the community’s concerns. The SVA is also concerned with regard to the configuration for a proposed Tim Hortons at this new shopping plaza. Mr. Jenkins foresees problems

with the drive-thru traffic for the Tim Hortons since the pickup window for the drive-thru is right next to the shop’s front door. “We feel that is something that is really unacceptable,” he said, noting that the SVA will be conveying this concern to the city of Ottawa planners dealing with the proposed revised site plan for the plaza.
