MORNING FIRE

Razing the roof

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Fire burned the roof off a bungalow in Stittsville in an early morning fire on Thursday, June 17. Much of the rear portion of the home, along with the attic and roof, were gutted in the fire which caused an estimated $150,000 damage. Ottawa Fire Service firefighters from Station 81 on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville, only a block away from the fire scene at the corner of Stittsville Main Street and Elm Crescent, received the call via 9-1-1 at 3:38 a.m. and within minutes were on the scene with a pumper, tanker and ladder truck. The roof, though, was fully involved when firefighters arrived on the scene. The first firefighters, with their local knowledge, knew that the house was for sale and unoccupied. However, in spite of the fire conditions, the firefighters were still able to conduct a thorough search of the building, confirming that no one was inside. Eventually, a total of ten fire vehicles and 48 firefighters were on scene and had the fire under control by 4:50 a.m. “We got the fire knocked down fairly quickly,” Ottawa Fire Service sector chief Chris Burke said. It is believed that the fire originated in the home’s basement area, climbed up through the walls and spread to the attic. Firefighters had to knock vent holes in the end of the home to battle the fire. A section of Stittsville Main Street in front of the home had to be blocked off during the firefighting because of the number of fire vehicles on scene. In addition, hose lines were laid on the roadway. The street was eventually re-opened to traffic at 6:15 a.m.

ting short the celebration. While it had been overcast and threatening rain, the decision was made to go ahead with the outdoor celebration, with all of the school’s students and staff, along with visiting parents and School Council members, gathering in the school’s rear yard.

Here comes Canada Day 2010. Stittsville’s celebrations are taking place again this year on the grounds of the Goulbourn Recreation Complex on Shea Road and, in fact, this year some activities are taking place inside the GRC. The Stittsville Legion is holding bingo at the GRC while the GRC will also be open for both badminton and volleyball activities throughout the day. But, like in other years, most of the activities will happen outside, beginning at 3 p.m. and running through to the gala fireworks display at dusk. At 3 p.m., there will be the opening ceremony which is sure to bring a patriotic twinge to every Canadian. Dignitaries will be led to the stage by bagpiper Jordan McConnell and a Royal Canadian Legion colour party. This will be followed by the singing of the national anthem, played by the Stittsville concert band with the singing led by Stittsville vocalists Kyle and Joel Curry. The cutting of a giant Canada Day cake will cap off this opening ceremony. Then it will be a steady stream of entertainment on stage.

Guardian Angels Catholic School grade six student Meghan Heer, left, former Guardian Angels principal Deb Robinson, centre, and Guardian Angels kindergarten student Ty Joseph, right, together perform a ceremonial soil turning at one of the trees which have been planted in the school yard to mark the school’s tenth anniversary.

A light drizzle began just as school principal Andrea Green welcomed everyone, including several special guests, to what she termed “a celebration” marking the school’s first decade of existence. Special guests included former principals Deb Robinson and Brenda Wilson, Ottawa Catholic School Board superintendent Greg Mullen and trustee John Curry. After vice-principal Chantel Couture-Campbell gave a brief outline of the school’s beginnings stemming from an overcrowded situation at Holy Spirit Catholic School, she noted that at the school’s groundbreaking ceremony, soil from Holy Spirit was mixed with soil from the Guardian Angels site. To commemorate this, she called on kindergarten student Ty Joseph and grade six student Meghan Heer to perform a ceremonial soil turning at the base of one of the two trees planted in the school yard to mark the tenth anniversary. Four Guardian Angels teachers who have been at the school since it opened in April, 2000, namely Tamara Creaser, Carolyn Joseph, Mary Ann McCuen and Cheryl Lepage, then took part in a ceremonial ribbon tying ceremony, tying a portion of ribbon around the two trees as well as on a park bench which has been installed between the two trees, also in celebration of the school’s tenth anniversary. Principal Andrea Green then led all those present in the Guardian Angels prayer which is said regularly at the school: “Angel of God, My guardian dear, To whom God’s love, Commits me here. Ever this day Be at my side To light and guard To rule and guide. Amen.” It was then explained that a time capsule located in a red/yellow/box was going to be prepared but by then the increasing rain forced a quick wrap up of the ceremony. The plan had been for a student representative from each class to read to the assembled gathering a favourite memory at Guardian Angels in 2010 and a prediction for the favourite memory of Guardian Angels students in 2020. This was not done at this ceremony but would be

done in the future due to the rain. The song “One World” had been planned to be sung but this too was cancelled. It had been planned to have a group photograph of all of the students and teachers taken by a photographer from the school’s rooftop. In spite of the rain, this was done, ensuring that there would be such a photo stemming from the school’s tenth anniversary celebration. 393325-25-10

Besides the entertainment, there will also be a midway and candyland provided by Classic Amusements. And if this were not enough, there will be a free family zone with inflatable rides, face painting, games with the Stittsville Scouts, a croquet golf game, hay rides and a quiz and crafts hosted by the

Goulbourn Museum. The grounds will also see a variety of wandering entertainers such as balloon artists, Batman, Cinderella and Superman. There will be food available on site thanks to Amberwood BBQ and Darlene’s Café, as well as Classic Amusements’ candyland. Little Ray’s Reptiles will be on site from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Youngsters always love these shows. When it gets darker, just before the fireworks, free glow sticks will be distributed to one and all. The fireworks are being promised as the best ever to make up for last year’s disappointing show due to a technical glitch.

POLICE

RAID HOME

Stittsville News - JUNE 24, 2010

“It was a good stop,” chief Burke said. “Thankfully there was no one in the house.” There were no firefighter injuries in battling the blaze and the fire damage is limited to structural damage since the house was unoccupied with virtually no contents inside. The house had been for sale in recent months.

It is suspected that the cause of the fire may have been electrical although the exact cause has yet to be determined. There was no wind at the time of the fire and the adjacent home to the north was in no danger due to its distance from the house on fire. The fire scene lot is covered with a lot of vegetation which made the firefighting operation a little more challenging.

Firebombing hits Stittsville JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF A Stittsville resident is now in police custody in relation to the firebombing of a Royal Bank branch in the Glebe on May 18. Police raided the Carp Road home of Claude Haridge, 50, last Friday while at the same time arresting him as he travelled to work. In the home, which is on the south side of Carp Road between Hazeldean Road and Stittsville Main Street, police seized hundreds of rounds of .762 caliber ammunition stored in an ammunition box. Mr. Haridge, along with two other men, appeared in court last Saturday. He was remanded into custody and appeared in court via video last Monday. The other two men who appeared in court with him last Saturday were Roger Clement, 58, of Ottawa who was remanded into custody and will appear in court this Friday and Matthew Morgan-Brown, 32, of Ottawa, who has been remanded into custody as well and appeared in court via video last Monday. All three have been arrested in regard to the May 18th arson fire at an RBC branch on Bank Street in the Glebe. An extensive 30 day investigation led by the Ottawa Police Arson and Major Crime Units and supported by the Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police found

that the suspects had used a combination of an accelerant and an improvised explosive device to set the lobby of the bank ablaze at night. Damage to the bank was estimated at over $500,000. The investigation also led police to lay charges with regard to another incident at an RBC branch located on Bank Street that occurred about 4 a.m. on Feb. 1 of this year when two persons were observed damaging multiple windows and ATM’s with rocks and a hammer. Mr. Haridge has been charged in relation to the arson at the RBC branch on May 18th, damage to the RBC branch on Feb. 1, mischief, careless storage or handling of ammunition and failing to comply with an undertaking. The other two are also facing similar charges. The Royal Bank arson was attributed to a group claiming to be the Fighting For Freedom Coalition – Ottawa. The arson apparently was carried out to protest the RBC’s involvement with the Vancouver Olympics. The FFFC-Ottawa group also indicated that it would be protesting at the upcoming G20 Summit in Toronto. The Ottawa Police, along with the OPP and RCMP, apparently had Mr. Haridge and the other two suspects under surveillance within days of the bank arson incident. Mr. Haridge has owned the home at 1208 Carp Road in Stittsville since at least the year 2000.

What Stittsville really is - caring and compassionate There is a lot of community chatter these days about the police raid on a Carp Road house and the arrest of a Stittsville resident for involvement in the arson fire at a Royal Bank branch on Bank Street in the Glebe. It was the result of a month-long intensive investigation by the Ottawa Police Service along with the Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It is big news because this does not usually happen in Stittsville or to Stittsville residents. Its very uniqueness makes it a great topic for conversations over the back fence, at Tim Hortons and throughout the community. But really this is an aberration of what Stittsville really is. We are not home to arsonists or terrorists or criminals. What we really are is a caring, compassionate community that cherishes family life and helping others. On the same day when the police were raiding the Carp Road home, students at Guardian Angels Catholic School were taking part in an annual Relay For Life event at the school, raising $16,086 for the Canadian Cancer Society. That evening, the fourth annual Relay For Life got under-

LETTERS

way at the Sacred Heart High School track, raising $175,000 to fight cancer. On Saturday, Gendron Antiques & Reproductions held an antiques appraisal day to raise funds to help four year old Niko Miceli and his battle with cancer which will include a four month family stay in Montreal while Niko undergoes treatment. Many from Stittsville were also involved in last Saturday’s fundraising event in Richmond for young Shelby Dozois of Richmond who is also battling cancer. On Monday, students at Stittsville Public School participated in the school’s annual Walk For The Cure to raise funds to fight juvenile diabetes. And so it goes on. And this is only the fundraising part of our community. What about the great Stittsville Minor Softball Association Fun Day which was held at Alexander Grove last Saturday, with all the enjoyment that it brought to these young ball players. It all happened because of committed parents who give the time and effort not only to have a vibrant minor ball program in the community but who go that extra mile to ensure that the season wraps up with a

memorable, fun filled event for all of the young teams. This is just one of many community events which go on continually in Stittsville. This is the real Stittsville. It is not a community of police raids but rather one of community involvement and caring. We will see this again on Canada Day when the Stittsville Village Association has once again planned some great Canada Day celebrations right here in the community. Entertainment, games, fun – it will all be there at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex grounds, ending with a gala fireworks display. This is but another family and community oriented event in Stittsville and yet another example of why Stittsville is a great place to live. Stittsville may have made the headlines for a rare police raid but it really should always be in the headlines of our hearts and minds for all the great community events of all kinds that go on throughout the year. That’s what really characterizes Stittsville – not the one-off police raid that makes media headlines but speaks very little about Stittsville’s true nature.

TO EDITOR

An unmitigated disaster Editor: I couldn’t disagree more with your editorial “Interesting Fall if Mayor Decides to Run.” Larry O’Brien has been an unmitigated disaster from the day he promised “zero means zero” to the longest bus strike in history to his out of control spending on a downtown tunnel. He is typical of the politicians who do none of the heavy lifting but are there to take the credit.

A good example is the green bin program. When it was under fire, Mr. O’Brien was nowhere to be found and he allowed the real champion of the program, councillor Peter Hume, to flap in the wind. The only reason I hope Mr. O’Brien runs is so I and many others can vote against him and pass judgement on his chaotic term of office. Frank Martin Stittsville

Tone of hope, not sadness Editor: I visited last Friday’s Relay For Life event for a short period of time around midnight, supporting my mother who was participating. The event was a lot different at night. Though many seemingly random tents were neatly set up inside and around the Sacred Heart High School track, it was the sense of community and strength that really attracted my mind. Though it was so late, it was early. Where you would expect darkness inside a field beside a forest, instead there were bright sport lights and ambient lamps inside circles of chairs occupied by people cozy and laughing. There was also the common glow stick as a neon necklace. Music played from a DJ at the stage area but the most curious thing was the people and

the track itself. Surrounding the gravel circle were hundreds of candles lighting white paper bags, each with a name inscribed on a label sticker. These were for the missed and the surviving friends and family members, all with cancer, who people were remembering as they participated in the event. And the people – a constant flow of people walking, running and dancing along the track at 12 midnight: singing, laughing and talking. Though it was a dark and subdued environment in a fundraising event for cancer, the tone was not of sadness. It was of hope, of guardians protecting the fallen and the affected, of the strong and joyful relaying along a road of candlelight. Carina Joneit Stittsville

‘Superhero teacher’ is retiring

390849

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The words on the wall behind the podium said it all: “Amazing Ada – Superhero teacher”. And this is exactly what Ada Gorrie has been over her teaching career as evidenced by the tributes to her voiced at a retirement gathering in her honour at Holy Spirit Catholic School in Stittsville on Tuesday, June 15. These tributes told of her connection with students, her physical activity, her enthusiasm, her love of teaching, her mentorship of other teachers and her energy. Denise Lozinski, a longtime friend JOHN CURRY PHOTO who job shared with Ada over years at both St. Gregory and St. Elizabeth Holy Spirit Catholic School teachers Don Kealey, left, and Philip Walsh, right, hold up a banner Ann Seton schools, recounted the proclaiming a $600 gift card for the Running Room which was presented to teacher Ada Gorrie at fun that the pair had in their teach- her retirement gathering at the school on Tuesday, June 15. ing together. She also noted that Ada lives her Catholic faith including not only as a teacher but as a member of the Catholic Women’s League. “She lives her faith in every way you can think of,” Ms. Lozinski said. After a slide presentation showing photos of Ada as an athlete, a coach, a friend, a mother and wife and a teacher, Holy Spirit teachers Philip Walsh and Don Kealey, on behalf of everyone, presented Ada with a giant $600 gift card for the Running Room, something that will be invaluable to a runner like Ada. The retirement gathering also featured the singing of a song “One Super Teacher”, sung to the tune of 390813 “One Tin Soldier” by the staff, both past and present, of Holy Spirit. Among the singers were former Holy Spirit principals Lyle Bergeron and Kevin Mullins. Ms. Gorrie, who lives in Munster, has been teaching grade three at Holy Spirit Catholic School in Stittsville.

Rain means more fun for youngsters at picnic

Stittsville News - JUNE 24, 2010

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The youngsters at the Sunday School picnic at the Stittsville United Pentecostal Church liked the noontime downpour which ceased activities for about an hour or so last Saturday. The rain made the ramp of the giant inflatable bounce slide set up for the picnic even more slippery than initially, making it even more fun for the rambunctious sliders. The giant inflatable slide was a highlight of the four hour church JOHN CURRY PHOTO picnic which was held at the church Stittsville United Pentecostal Church Sunday Schoolers Tyran Clarke, left, and Lesean Wilson, right, show off the giant grounds on Stittsville Main Street inflatable bounce slide which was one of the highlights at the Sunday School’s picnic at the church on Stittsville Main at Stanley’s Corners just south of Street at Stanley’s Corners last Saturday. Stittsville.

But it wasn’t the only attraction by any means. There were a variety of games such as a bean bag toss set up for the youngsters. There were two separate areas of fun set up, one for the younger set and one for the older children. There was even an area where soccer could be played. What a fitting activity in these days of the World Cup in South Africa. And when the downpour did hit around noon, it provided a great opportunity for everyone to head inside the church’s fellowship area where hot dogs, hamburgers and lemonade awaited everyone. By 1:30 p.m., it was bright and sunny again, just like earlier before the rain and the picnic kept going.

The proposed project, terms the West Carleton Environmental Centre by Waste Management, involves a new landfill at the Carp Road site along with new or expanded industrial, commercial and residential diversion and recycling operations to divert waste away from landfilling. Waste Management claims that the new West Carleton Environmental Centre will create up to 75 jobs and provide economic benefits of over one million dollars per year. Waste Management also wants to set aside lands for community recreational purposes and wildlife habitat. The landfill will have a liner system and a leachate collection and monitoring system to project the groundwater and surface water. A landfill gas to energy facility converting landfill gas to energy will be part of the project. This energy will be used to power greenhouses that will eventually be built on the site. The Coalition of Citizen Groups opposed to this landfill project includes the Stittsville Village Association, the Richmond Corridor Community Association, NoDump. ca and OttawaLandfillWatch. org.

landfill on Carp Road, however, has gone on record as wanting Waste Management to begin with a draft Terms of Reference and to extend the initial consultation period for the project from less than two months to up to nine months. The Coalition points out that draft Terms of Reference are highly recommended by the Ministry of the Environment. The Coalition is also concerned about the lack of details presented about the project so far and the lack of opportunities for two-way dialogue in addressing community questions and concerns. Waste Management points out that since the new landfill proposal was announced on April 13, it has conducted open houses and workshops to provide opportunities for people to learn about the project and ask questions and to discuss issues of concern. In addition, Waste Management points out that members of the public still have the opportunity to provide comments to the Ministry of the Environment up until July 19. The Kanata Civic Art Gallery

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF It came down to a David versus Goliath battle. Unfortunately, it did not turn out the Biblical way and David lost but Goliath knew it had been up against a fierce foe. Indeed, the whole season for David a.k.a. the Sacred Heart High School Huskies senior boys’ rugby team was a Cinderella story, with such a team not even on the school’s sports radar until interested students circulated a petition and teacher Mr. Patrice stepped forward as coach. Sacred Heart had not had a senior boys’ rugby team since 2007 and so other than for two players who played then, the team’s roster was rookies. During the regular season, the Sacred Heart Huskies relied on dedication, passion and enthusiasm to make up for their lack of playing experience. Thanks to coach Patrice and co-captains Read Spencer and Joshua Faulkner, the team displayed grit and determination during the regular season, compiling a record of two wins and three losses. Touch tackling became a team hallmark. This record helped the Huskies attain their goal of reaching the playoffs, albeit in the second to last spot.

The Huskies’ first playoff challenge was taking on Sir Robert Borden High School and emerging with a narrow 1310 victory, advancing to semi-final action against the undefeated St. Paul High School squad. The Huskies had lost 3112 to St. Paul in the regular season, so things did not look good for the upstart Huskies. In the semi-final playoff game, St. Paul gave away two early penalties. Eric Reid hit the first penalty kick high but just wide of the uprights. But on the second one a few plays later, the ball went sailing through to give Sacred Heart three points. The first half of this game was largely a game of the forwards with both teams making hard early tackles, preventing either set of backs from getting into top gear. But in the second half, play was more open, with both sets of backs making penetrating runs. Both sides also had superb kicking, either gaining ground or relieving pressure. Well into the second half, Sacred Heart kicked and after putting on the pressure had the ball close to the St. Paul try line. A maul formed with both forwards pushing strong. Josh Faulkner and Brandon Marshall grabbed the ball and with the help of oth-

ers jointly drive over the line to earn five points. Josh Faulkner then added three more points with his left foot. Sacred Heart then used effective kicking to keep St. Paul at bay. However, late in the game, St. Paul earned a penalty that was converted to make the score 10-3 for the Huskies. This is how the game ended, with Sacred Heart off to meet the powerful and undefeated Glebe Collegiate Institute team in the West Conference final. Now, this was a close game. After a disallowed try and considerable pressure, Sacred Heart scored first with a try from Brandon Marshall who outran closing Glebe players. Josh Faulkner converted this try, giving Sacred Heart a 7-0 lead. This is how the first half ended. In the second half, Josh Faulkner received the ball from a scrum and made a grubber kick. He chased this down and caught the ball as it popped up. His momentum carried him past a Glebe defender and over the line for the Huskies’ second try of the game. The convert was missed but Sacred Heart led 12-0 at this PHOTO COURTESY OF ANDREW FAULKNER point. Glebe replied with a try and a conversion, making the score 12-7 for the Read Spencer, right, of the Sacred Heart High School Huskies senior boys’ rugby team goes high to grab the ball Huskies with 15 minutes to go. in the team’s playoff game against St. Paul High School. DAVID, FROM 8

9 Stittsville News - JUNE 24, 2010

Glebe applied pressure right to the end, practically camped on the Sacred Heart try line right up to the final whistle. A try and conversion would have given Glebe the victory. But it was not to be and Sacred Heart earned the win and a trip to the National Capital Secondary Schools Athletic Association championship final against another undefeated team, Garneau High School. This is a strong team, outscoring 182 points while allowing only 20 points in the regular season – a real powerhouse and big physically. Not only that but the game was played at Garneau in Orleans, giving them the home field advantage. There was a big turnout of Garneau supporters for the game, including cheerleaders and a mascot. After 15 minutes, Garneau scored the first try of the game but missed the conversion, making it a 5-0 game. The Huskies battled but at the 24 minute mark, Garneau scored again, making it 10-0. With the convert, it was 12-0. Garneau then came back and scored again, with another successful conversion making it 19-0 at half time. In the second half, the teams went back and forth with kicks and occasional runs but Garneau then broke through to score another try. With the convert, it was now 26-0 for Garneau.

Eventually Sacred Heart made a break through and won a scrum in the Garneau end. Josh Faulkner, acting a scrum half, fished the ball from the scrum and made a quick pass to Dylon Kirasock who after a penetrating run past several defenders made a perfect pass to teammate Mike Weirich who dove across the try line. It was now 26-5 as the conversion was missed. Sacred Heart continued to apply pressure and once again threatened. A maul formed and the ball was won by Brendan Gervais of the Huskies who darted to the line, only to be held back by the mighty Garneau forwards. A ruck formed with the Huskies pushing hard. Josh Faulkner picked the ball out of the ruck and found a gap in the Garneau defense, diving over the line to give the Huskies five more points. The conversion was missed. Garneau, though, came back with another try, making the final score 31 for Garneau and 10 for Sacred Heart. The Cinderella story came to a crushing end. So close to the championship. But, all in all, a fantastic season for the Huskies, playing for the first time together. They took on the very best and nearly emerged as the overall champions. What a season. David may not have triumphed over the Garneau Goliath but the Huskies playoff run showed that the team had heart, talent and determination. It was a season to remember and a season to cherish.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Three students from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville competed in the recent high school provincial track and field championships in London, Ontario. Two of them, Lauren Agnew and David Cotten, had not been at the provincial meet previously. While none captured a medal and indeed all performed below their personal bests, the competition was a good experience for them and prepares them for future participation. All three of the students – Lauren Agnew, David Cotten and Erik Hiratsuka – train with the Ottawa Lions track club. At the provincial high school meet, Lauren Agnew competed in the junior girls’ high jump while David Cotten was in the senior men’s triple jump. Erik Hiratsuka ran in the senior men’s 100 metre event. While they did not win at the provincial level, they had winning records to be eligible for the provincial meet. They were winners at the West Conference track and field meet and then at the National Capital meet, both in Ottawa. They then had to successfully compete in the East Region meet in Belleville in order to move on to the provincial meet. 397636

Overworked and under-trained Personal Support Workers struggle to provide the best care

As front-line workers in the overburdened long-term care system, PSWs are the first to see its problems. Given the chaos they experience every day, they want better training standards and other professional improvements that the province, so far, is rejecting.

SECOND IN A FOUR-PART SERIES

By Jillian Follert

W

hen the woman’s head hit the wall with a dull thud, Cathy’s blood ran cold. “I was just thinking, ‘oh my God, oh my God, what if I killed her?’” The 26-year-old was four months into her first job as a personal support worker at a Toronto long-term care home, when she left a frail, wisp of a 90-year-old Alzheimer’s patient with a bump on the head, after struggling to transfer her 100pound body from wheelchair to bed. “It’s partly my fault, because I probably should have asked for help,” Cathy said, crying as she remembers that day in 2008, and the nurse who called her an idiot. “But, I also think it’s not really my fault, because my school never taught me how to do transfers properly.” Cathy isn’t her real name. As was the case with most of the 30 PSWs interviewed for Situation Critical, Cathy agreed to tell her story, on condition that her name and the home she works at not be identified. She worries about being fired or blacklisted for speaking on situations that jeopardize care. PSWs are the most intimate point of contact for 75,000 elderly Ontarians living in government-supported nursing homes, helping with everything from feeding to toileting. The approximately 100,000 PSWs employed in various eldercare capacities in Ontario — about 30,000 work in nursing homes — toil at the bottom of the health care food chain, whether they work in long-term care facilities or at an individual’s home. They are in a struggle for legitimacy that has become more public as PSWs push the province harder for higher standards and concrete training requirements. It’s a losing battle. Health Minister Deb Matthews recently scrapped a round of public consultation on potential regulation of PSWs. She told Metroland she is “very much concerned” about PSW qualifications and the fact that training courses differ dramatically in length and content. “What I think is important, is there is a clear understanding of what training is required to call yourself a PSW,” Matthews said. “My understanding is that it varies tremendously.”

PSWs are the heartbeat of Ontario’s 625 nursing homes, responsible for up to 75 per cent of care. They bathe and dress residents, comb their hair and brush their teeth. They lift them in and out of beds and wheelchairs, and help those who can still use the toilet. They change diapers, spoon feed residents and reposition them to prevent bed sores. Increasingly, PSWs also tackle medically related tasks delegated by other overworked health professionals, including changing nitroglycerine patches and navigating chest drainage, feeding tubes and oxygen therapy. PSWs who spoke to Metroland said ratios can be as low as three or four PSWs to 50 or 60 residents. “You’re literally jogging from room to room, you have no time to talk to the residents and spend time with them,” said April Hill, from the Orillia area, a PSW for about three years. “It’s just go, go, go. Get them out of bed, put them back in bed. Feed them, wash them, dress them. Move on to the next one.” PSW advocates say it would be easier to navigate the growing challenges if PSWs were all well-trained and had a professional organization to lean on. “We are in desperate need of regulation and standards, if you get a PSW in there who isn’t properly trained you put the public at risk. People get hurt,” said Miranda Ferrier, president of PSW Canada, an advocacy group. “PSWs become an extension of their residents, they’re their hands and their eyes. They do everything they can’t do for themselves, and that takes the right training.” For many families with loved ones in care, PSWs are indispensable. Kathy Paterson of the Oshawa area, whose 86year-old mother was in long-term care before she died this spring, appreciated the PSW assigned to care for her. Paterson said the PSW who dressed her mother each day, helped her eat and noticed even the smallest medical changes, was a life raft in a chaotic system. “She treated my mother with such care, it was like they were family,” she said. Just like the families who feel grateful to those who care for their loved ones, many PSWs become attached to those they serve. Luc Carriere, who works at the Carleton Lodge long term care facility, which opened its doors in 1960, wants to maintain a standard of care for seniors in the province. He believes this can be accomplished with a standardized number of hours alloted each day to individual residents. Alberta is currently the only province with a standard where patients get 3.5 hours of personal care per day. PSWs are also traditionally given low

pay rates, with a national average of $14.34 per hour, according to a Canadian Union of Public Employees study. “I love my job, but there just aren’t enough hands to give residents the care that they need,” Carriere said. Carriere is in charge of the centres day activities, which will often mean organizing outings or happy hour. For him, every day is different, but a lack of resources and staff can sometimes mean he is filling in when needed in other areas of care. Wendy McCarl, graduate of the PSW program at Algonquin College has a different set of priorities on her wish list. McCarl’s intention on taking the program was to work with young people with developmental disabilities, but after doing a stint with Help the Aged, a local charity dedicated to the health and well being of the country’s seniors, she was hooked. Now McCarl works to support elderly men at the Ottawa Mission. Whether it is to help provide access to health care or to locate a spot in a long-term care facility or assisted living complex, she helps her clients when they need it the most. “If I could ask for anything, it would be safe housing where they can be comfortable and safe,” she said. “Some men I work with don’t need that much, just someone to visit them or help with their banking, but every little bit helps.” McCarl said it can be difficult to place her homeless seniors in the right facility due to lack of documents, a murky picture of their health concerns and the attitude that there isn’t a better life out there to be had. “A lot of them just accept not feeling well or not having enough food,” she said. “Sometimes it can be tough to convince them that there is another way.” McCarl’s job isn’t the day-to-day physical care of seniors’ needs. She doesn’t bathe them, she doesn’t have to feed them and she wouldn’t know how to treat their physical ailments. That doesn’t make her work any less

important. The work she does makes sure they end up in the types of facilities that will care for their physical and mental well being, so despite the crushing paperwork and long wait times, she feels satisfied in her career. Carriere said she feels the same way. “Sometimes it can be depressing, but you can make just that one resident smile and it is all worth it,” he said. But, concern that PSWs are not regulated or certified, coupled with media reports of infractions — a North Bay PSW, for example, was sentenced to house arrest this year for stealing an elderly resident’s credit card — have led to calls for the profession to go through an accountability overhaul. For the organizations working on behalf of PSWs, that means an Ontariowide PSW registry, uniform curriculum and clear-cut standards of practice. In the chaotic life of a PSW, time, wages, resources, training, support and respect are often in short supply. Without education standards, some new hires end up at a loss when they’re thrust into reallife situations — jeopardizing the care of fragile residents they oversee. “ ... when I got out there working, then I realized there’s some things I don’t know,” said Jen, who has been on the job for a year and completed a six-month adult education course offered through a school board. “We didn’t spend much time on the proper terminology for certain illnesses or anything that can go wrong with the body. Even the CPR first aid course, I find myself having to go back and reread my book over again. Because I find myself in some situations where it’s like, ‘oh my God, it went too fast and now I don’t remember what to do in this situation.’” With files from Jennifer McIntosh

City of Ottawa Councillor Reports By Shad Qadri, Councillor Ward Six Stittsville City of Ottawa I strongly urge all residents to file comments to the Ministry of Environment (MOE) regarding the expansion proposal of the Waste Management (WM) Carp Road landfill. As of Friday, June 18, for a 30 day period, the MOE is welcoming public comments on the project as WM prepares to submit its Terms or Reference to the MOE. You can send your comments directly to John Gerretsen, who serves as the Minister of Environment, by e-mail at minister.moe@ontario.ca or by telephone at 416- 314-6790. You can also send comments to Norm Sterling, the MPP for Carleton- Mississippi Mills. His contact information is 416-314-7900 or by e-mail at norm.sterling@pc.ola.org He can also be reached at his constituency office at 613-5993000. The community has long said this expansion it doesn’t need or want. Let’s all take a stand by letting the appropriate representatives know exactly how we feel. Let your voices be heard. In the meantime, here’s a look at 10 reasons why we don’t need a landfill expansion. This list was made available by several community leaders who have allowed me to share it with all of you. They are: 1. The dump will almost double in size and will impact the community for hundreds of years. 2. Toronto garbage will come to Ottawa. 3. The landfill will hinder the development of a growing and vibrant community - on of the economic engines of Ottawa. 4. The landfill will provide excessive landfill capacity, which will deter Ottawa and Ontario’s efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle. 5. Ottawa is a world-class city that deserves world-class alternative solutions that use waste as a valuable resource. 6. Bad odours will come back to the west end of Ottawa. 7. Ottawa has access to other inner city and nearby landfills as well as new diversion facilities and does not need another massive landfill. 8. There will be 50,000 more trucks on Carp Road per year. 9. The landfill is built on fractured limestone and is highly vulnerable to on going groundwater contamination. 10. It’s already an eyesore and an embarrassment - an ugly backdrop to Scotiabank Place and future development. Over the following few years, the area was developed into a lovely, peaceful place now known as the Quiet Garden. The area now includes rose and peren-

To report a theft, property damage, missing person or stolen vehicle, please contact the call centre at 613236-1222, ext 7300. For community Police Centres and all other enquiries call 613-2361222. Installation of Cathodic Protection Cathodic protection is a watermain maintenance procedure that controls the rate at which corrosion takes place. By attaching magnesium blocks to the watermain and inducing a small DC voltage, metal corrosion is transferred from the watermain to the anode. The watermain is now protected. Cathodic protection works on the outside of the pipe and does not affect water quality. The anode installation process takes a few minutes at each location and inconvenience to residents and motorists should be minor. Test stations will be set up at area hydrants to ensure the anodes have been installed properly. In Stittsville, the following streets are where city crews will be installing cathodic protection: STREET Amy St Carp Rd Cedarow Crt Denham Way Forest Creek Dr Fringewood Dr Greer St Jacqueline Cres Kathleen Cres Kintail Crt Kyle Ave McCooeye Lane

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Excitement is building at the Munster United Church. And, in fact, the excitement is about building, namely a project upgrading the church facility, making it more environmentally friendly and adding an accessible washroom as well. A groundbreaking party to celebrate the start of this project is being held this Friday, June 25 at 6 p.m. at the church. A supper will be on the grill and everyone in the community is most welcome to attend and help the church congregation celebrate its renovation project. The project is going to involve several changes that will provide a wheelchair accessible washroom facility for the church’s main ground floor level, an extra cloak room and storage space, an easily accessible entrance and a new stairway access from the main floor to the basement area. Demolition of the existing entrance will begin the process. The plan is that the foundation, steps, roof and exterior work on the addition will be completed before the upcoming winter months. The current church building has undergone a number of renovations and changes since it was built in 1895 after a fire destroyed the previous brick building. This new renovation project is just the most recent example of the congregation’s continued adaption to remaining a robust and active community of God’s people in the Munster area. The congregation has existed since the earliest settlement days in the area when it began as a Methodist congregation ministered by circuit rider Ezra Healey who travelled around the area via horseback. Last Saturday Munster United Church held a strawberry social and hidden auction to help raise funds not only for ongoing church operations but also to help fund this new renovation project at the church.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Students at Stittsville Public School used their feet last Monday to raise funds to help fight juvenile diabetes. They participated in the school’s annual Walk for the Cure, a fundraising event for the Juvenile Diabetes Association. This involves the students walking as a group around the perimeter of the school yard, raising money through pledges. The school has been holding this Walk for

the Cure event for about a dozen years now. It was a sunny day with blue skies overhead as all of the students gathered at the rear of the school, many wearing hats, some clutching water bottles and all ready to walk to raise funds to fight juvenile diabetes. After singing O Canada in both English and French, the students set off, class by class, two abreast, on the walk, which was led by flagbearers, grade five students Paula Reid and Ashley Woods, carrying the Canadian flag and the school’s flag respectively.

Proud to be the Recipient of the 2010 Readers Choice Diamond Award for Kanata’s community lawyers

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Minor ball is alive and well in Stittsville. You only had to witness the parade of teams parading onto the main diamond at Alexander Grove last Saturday to know this. This was the highlight of the annual Stittsville Minor Softball Association’s Fun League’s Fun Day which saw all of the mite and squirt teams (ages 5 to 8, both boys and girls) march onto the Grove diamond, following a Royal Canadian Legion colour party. There were the Blue Bombers, the Tigers, the Road Runners and more, over a dozen in

all, with the players wearing their colourful jerseys, sporting medals around the necks and walking behind their hand-made posters proclaiming the team name. The rainbow of colours was so striking that as the teams and their coaches lined up across the infield to sing O Canada and then listen to some remarks by city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri, it was the councillor himself who commented on the panorama of colour created by the variety of jersey colours including red, blue and yellow stretched across the infield. Before lining up, the teams paraded around

hole, an inflatable target game, a volleyball 15 challenge, a water carrying game, and a ball throwing speed gun activity. There was also a popular dunking tank, face painting and refreshments. The good planning for the event even carried over to the weather, as the ball diamond parade and festivities had just wrapped up in the noontime sunny conditions when the clouds moved in and 15 minutes later it was pouring rain. But the fun had been had and Stittsville’s ball playing youngsters were headed home with medals around the necks, fun memories in their heads and lots of excitement in their voices. Fun Day 2010 – everyone had a ball.

the infield and while the players were passing the Legion colour guard trio standing at home plate they exchanged high fives with the Legionaires. In his remarks, councillor Qadri praised the volunteers who had organized the Fun Day, noting that the future of the community of Stittsville was lined up on the diamond. “You see the community in front of you,” he told those at the Grove. This ball diamond parade marked the culmination of a morning full of fun and activity for the players. Among the activities set up at the Grove were a ring toss, a bean bag toss, a basketball bucket toss, a fishing

Stittsville News - JUNE 24, 2010

RELAY FOR LIFE

Three special laps say it all co-chair of this year’s event along with Jaime McKenna, reminded everyone that while the Relay For Life event is only 12 hours long, the fight against cancer extends to 365 days a year. She noted that research against cancer is happening every day, with some real accomplishments in cancer research having taken place in the past few years. Providing more inspiration for the Relay walkers was Margarita Gorbounova, a Canadian paralympian who has only seven percent vision and who competed in the 2010 Paralymics in Vancouver, participating in cross country skiing. She explained to the assembled walkers that she decided to become involved in paralymic sport so that she could push her limits, something which requires perseverance. This same trait of perseverance is needed to win the fight against cancer. Tara Landry, manager of marketing and communications for Protus, the major corporate sponsor for Stittsville’s Relay For Life, voiced the collective wish of everyone to be alive when a cure for cancer is found. After a rousing version of O Canada by singers Jessica Fitzpatrick and Mia Gosham-Hamer, the Relay’s opening lap was held, with teams passing in front of the stage brandishing their signs and placards and being announced by MC Peter Hamer. Teams bore such names as Brenda’s Family of Angels, Annie’s Angels, the Valley Clod Hoppers, The Pink Ladies, Cancer Crushers, Mean Green Cure Team, Mission Possible and Bayshore Bitches, among others.

on the site. These lit luminaries would glow, defiantly proclaiming that cancer can be beaten and lighting the way for all those who were circling the track, walking to help find a cure and eliminate the disease from today’s society. What is surprising is that even at 7 a.m. on Saturday, the candles in these bags continued to burn, not seen because of the dawn’s sunshine but still there, steadfastly flaming and showing the perseverance that all those fighting cancer exhibit in each and every day of their lives. Besides these luminaries, the inside of the track also sported blue and white signs carrying inspirational messages for the walkers, such as “Thousands of Canadians were able to enroll in clinical trials – Thanks to you.” This year’s Relay For Life event began as previous ones have, with the survivors’ lap in which yellow shirted survivors walk as a group around the track, following a group of four bagpipers and three drummers from the Arnprior McNab Pipes and Drums. Three placards carrying “Survivors’ Words of Strength” were among the group. As the survivors made their way around the track, greeting by a wave of applause from onlooking Relay participants, city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri read out the names of the survivors, citing their years of survival, ranging from one year to as many as 28 years. Prior to the official start of the Relay, when teams marched together in an initial lap of the track, complete with placards and signs announcing the team name and with many wearing coloured tshirts, Georgie Gosham-Hamer,

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF In Stittsville’s Relay For Life, every lap of the track is a moving moment, both physically and spiritually. But three laps stand out as the most moving, the most touching, the most symbolic – the opening survivors’ lap, the lap launching the lighting of the luminaries and the final one, the Fight Back lap. These three say it all: cancer can be beaten, cancer is fought by the courageous and the fight must continue until cancer is defeated. Stittsville’s fourth annual Relay For Life, held overnight last Friday and Saturday at the track at Sacred Heart High School, drew over 50 teams involving 600 participants and 100 volunteers, the culmination of a year of planning and preparation. And the weatherman could not have been more cooperative, with sunny, blue skies and a 29 degree temperature greeting the Relay’s 7 p.m. launch. Clear skies beneath a half moon prevailed for the 12 hour overnight event, with the sun flickering through the morning mist for the windup Fight Back lap at 7 a.m. on Saturday. Once again this year, a tent city sprung up on the infield of the track as well as on the adjoining sports field, with each team setting up one of these temporary canvas homes where team members could sit and relax after taking a turn on the track. Luminaries, namely candles in white bags bearing the names of a loved one who has survived cancer, who is fighting cancer or who has been lost to cancer, lined the inside of the track, all ready for the luminary lighting ceremony which would take place at 10 p.m. after darkness had descended

It took about eight minutes for all of the more than 50 teams to pass in front of the stage, with those who had left first almost back at the starting line as the last teams were leaving. “The fourth annual Stittsville Relay For Life has begun,” MC Peter Hamer announced from the stage at 7:20 p.m. as the walking around the track began and music began, adding a festive, party atmosphere to this fundraising event. By just before 10 p.m., walkers were circling the track, usually in two’s or three’s, chatting as they moved along. Some were even running. Action on the track ceased at

10 p.m. for the luminary ceremony, with the walkers en masse following a bagpiper playing Amazing Grace around the track. Following this lap, walkers went to luminaries that they wanted to light and lit them, creating a rim of glowing light around the inside of the track. The on-stage luminary ceremony itself featured two songs by singer Jessica Fitzpatrick, accompanied on guitar by Steve Richard. One was “I Believe in the Power of Love” while her second song, winding up the ceremony, was “Maybe Tonight, Maybe Tomorrow”, a song that was written for the cancer-fighting Lance Armstrong Foundation. At the luminary ceremony, all those crowded around the stage area heard from cancer survivor Duncan Ferguson of Stittsville who far surpassed his initial fundraising goal for the Relay For Life event. He reminded everyone that one day cancer will be wiped away from the world. He reminded everyone, as well, of the impact of cancer, not just on the person affected but also on family, friends and caregivers. He read a poem entitled “What cancer cannot do” (it cannot cripple love or shatter hope, it cannot kill friendship) and extolled what was his first experience with Relay For Life. “What an amazing experience this event has been for me,” he said before lighting three luminaries on stage, one for caregivers, one for survivors and one for those who have lost the battle with cancer. “May everyone who has been touched by cancer feel the light of hope and spiritual peace,” Mr. Ferguson concluded, before calling for a moment of silent reflection for all caregivers, survivors and those who have died from cancer. Relay For Life wound up at 7 a.m. on Saturday with a “Fight Back Ceremony” concluding with a Fight Back lap with all participants slowly making their way around the track as a group, waving small “Fight Back” flags. Before this final lap, they had assembled around the stage to hear Jessica Fitzpatrick sing once again, this time a song entitled “I Run For Life.” They then heard from CTV Ottawa personality Michael O’Byrne who is the honourary chair of the Canadian Cancer

so important in that fight,” he said, be- 33 fore launching the final “Fight Back” lap, so called “because we have to fight back against cancer 365 days a year.” As the song “We Are The Champions” played, this final “Fight Back” lap began at 7:04 a.m. Walkers hugged each other, pumped fists in the air and celebrated as they finished this final lap. The tents had all been dismantled a little earlier, so the site quickly emptied – Stittsville’s Relay For Life over for another year as the fight against cancer continues.
