Celebrating 150 years

AT MUSEUM

Boat fun JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF

Making boats and then racing them for prizes – this is what is in store for youngsters who attend a children’s activity day at the Goulbourn Museum at Stanley’s Corners this Sunday, Aug. 8. At this activity day, which will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., children aged 4 to 12 will be able to create a dream boat out of a variety of supplies. The boat will then have the opportunity to race against others for a chance to win prizes. Besides this boat building, the activity day will also include various play games, make finger puppets and other crafts, all for only two dollars per child. Parents interested in enrolling their child in the activity day should call the Museum at 613-831-2393 to guarantee a spot. In addition to the crafts and other activities, this special day will also provide an opportunity for visitors, both younger and older, to explore the Museum and its feature exhibits which include the ever-popular Village Store display. The Goulbourn Museum is located at 2064 Huntley Road at the intersection JOHN CURRY PHOTO of Flewellyn Road at Stanley’s Corners, Lillian Hobbs of Mansfi eld Road in Goulbourn stands beside the rural mail box that is now beside just south of Stittsville. JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF A century and a half of Hobbs family ownership of its farmland in Goulbourn is reason to celebrate. And that’s just what is going to happen, with the Hobbs family farm marking the 150th anniversary of the Hobbs family farming at 7542 Mansfield Road with a party to which everyone is invited. The “Back Home 2010” celebration will take place over two days, Saturday, Aug. 14 and Sunday, Aug. 15 at the farm which today is known as 7542 Mansfield Road but which historically is known as the east half of lot 12, concession six of Goulbourn. This is what it was known as when it was originally granted as crown land to a James Cullen in 1825 and what it was known as when James Hobbs walked all the way to Perth in 1860 to obtain the property and begin the 150 years of continuous Hobbs family ownership which is being celebrated on the Aug. 14/15 weekend. And while Hobbs family ownership goes back these 150 years, a part of the existing Hobbs family farmhouse goes back even farther, probably to 1825. This is when the original landowner, James Cullen, had met the requirements for ownership, meaning that he had probably erected a log dwelling on the site. In 1860, when James Hobbs took over ownership of the property, there was a roofless log building on a stone foundation on the site, with a tree growing from the cellar. It was these log walls and stone foundation that eventually became the home on the site after Joshua Hobbs and Maude Caldwell were married in 1894 and then moved to the site. CELEBRATING, SEE 27

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF It’s a two day equestrian extravaganza. If you love horses, then you’ll love this. In fact, that’s what it is called – Horse Lovers’ Weekend. It is a two day horse show at Westar Farms in Goulbourn that is coming up this Saturday, Aug. 7 and Sunday, Aug. 8. With about 200 participants expected from all around the Ottawa Valley, western Quebec and the Kingston area, this show promises to offer something for everyone – classes for riders younger than seven years old who are led around the ring on a horse or pony and classes for experienced horses and their riders who will be soaring over jumps almost four feet tall. The horse show will run from 8 a.m. to about 4 p.m. on both days. Everyone is welcome to attend and watch the events as ad-

Thirty dance recitals. That’s three decades of love and dedication, teaching not only dance technique but also life lessons. So it is no small wonder that at her 30th dance recital last May, Christine Delorme, owner and director of The Dance Studio & Boutique in Stittsville, was given a trophy by her dance students acknowledging her as the “#1 Dance Teacher,” a point emphasized by the fact that an accompanying shirt was signed by all of the dancers, both those on the competitive team and all of the recreational ones. “I think I speak for all the dancers here at The Dance Studio & Boutique when I say Christine is more than just a dance teacher to us, she’s a friend,” said dancer Brooke Galloway in the remarks which she made on behalf of all of the dancers during the trophy presentation ceremony at the dance recital. “Without Christine excelling in what she loves most, that being dance, none of us would be who we are today,” Brooke continued, noting that at The Dance Studio & Boutique, dancers learn not only dance technique but also life lessons. In addition, friendships have been built that have developed and will remain. She said that life lessons learned include teamwork, team spirit, leadership and determination, among other things, all of which will help the dancers on their journey

through life. “No one has ever accepted the word ‘can’t’ here at The Dance Studio” because we all believe in each other, push each other to do the best we can,” Brooke said. “I’d like to thank and congratulate Christine Delorme for her 30 years of love and dedication that she has put forth to The Dance Studio and Boutique,” Brooke said, adding that all of the dancers love her. With this 30th dance recital held last May now history, The Dance Studio & Boutique is planning for another season. Registrations are now being accepted for the upcoming 2010-2011 dance season. Classes will begin in September and will run until the recital in May. Those interested in class information should call The Dance Studio & Boutique at 613-831-1010 or check out the website at www.thedancestudio.ca. The Dance Studio & Boutique, located at 1502 Stittsville Main Street which is on the west side of the street just north of Abbott Street, offers a variety of dance classes ranging from pre dance to ballet to tap to jazz to hip hop to lyrical. This coming season, The Dance Studio & Boutique is offering a new pre dance class for two and three year olds. It will be held on Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 3:50 p.m. The Dance Studio & Boutique is also offering a combination class for jazz, salsa and hip hop for ladies on Tuesday evenings beginning this fall.

Election campaign is a time to dream This is municipal election year and with electioneering to get underway in earnest in September, we would hope that candidates will advance innovative and interesting projects and policies. These can be big or small, it makes no matter. What is important is that they improve existing situations. We can think of two small projects which we think would make a difference in the Stittsville community. One would be establishment of a small parking lot on the west side of West Ridge Drive at the Trans Canada Trail. Right now, Trail users have to park along West Ridge Drive which in our view is not the best. Instead, there should be an off-road parking area where these Trail users can park, with their vehicles out of the main traffic flow area. There may be some environmental concerns in developing

STITTSVILLE

a parking area in this location but surely they are not insurmountable. It need not be paved but should be of a more porous surface to allow rain penetration rather than immediate runoff. Another similar project would be establishment of at least a layby lane and preferable an off-street parking area along the south side of Abbott Street near Granite Ridge Drive where motorists currently park as they walk their dogs along the Trans Canada Trail and in the currently open area south of the Trail. Having motorists as at present parking along the street while getting out of their vehicles and getting their dogs out of the vehicle is mixing these uses with the ongoing traffic flow on the street. This, in our view, is not the safest of circumstances.

A sizeable layby area or a parking area in this situation would be better, getting these vehicles and pets farther removed from moving traffic. We would hope that the municipal election will bring out ideas such as these for small projects in the community that will improve current situations. Of course, we also hope that the election campaign will generate other visions such as improved electrical security, enhanced youth programming, more local bussing, Carp Road improvements, increased police presence, less speeding on neighbourhood streets and greater investment in soccer fields, among other things. An election campaign is a time to dream, to think about what could be and what isn’t. It is a time to insist on municipal leaders being visionaries as well as being public advocates, on being idea oriented as well as complaint driven.

SITUATION

Rush to judgement? SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Sometimes appearances can be deceiving. An example of how a rush to judgment based on appearances only and not based on talking with the people involved or investigating the matter in depth happened to Stittsville resident John Brisson recently. This all relates to a note written in block letters which had been attached to the door of his garage and which he found on Thursday, July 29. The note read as follows: “Have compassion!! It has been noticed by people that your dog can hardly walk and is in pain!! Last night you were seen by a neighbour yanking and yelling at your dog to get up. Put it to sleep and out of its misery! Thank of your dog and not you.” Pretty strong comments. But all based on assumptions. The facts cast a far different light on the happenings. Mr. Brisson acknowledges that his dog walks with difficulty but that she can walk – she just does not want to and thus allows herself to fall, often frequently in a very short distance.

Once the dog realizes that she is not the “boss” or relieves herself as needed, she does walk, very slowly but seldom falling. Mr. Brisson keeps discussing his dog’s situation with her veterinarian and with her therapist, trying to determine if there are reasons for this problem. He has not noticed the dog being in any particular pain and the veterinarian who has been looking after the dog for more than 13 years and who has been visiting the dog every third week since early January says that the dog is feeling no pain in walking. In addition, the therapist whom the dog visits every week has not said that the dog is in pain. Mr. Brisson believes that all of his dog’s health problems are under control. The veterinarian has not yet indicated that it is time to put the dog to sleep. Until this happens, Mr. Brisson feels that the dog needs exercise and will regularly take her for short walks. If the walks stop, then the dog will have no exercise whatsoever – not a good situation, in Mr. Brisson’s view.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Polar bears are never seen in Richmond. But polar bears and their current plight for survival in a warming world have been very much in the minds and thoughts

of a group of youngsters in Richmond and they did something about it. They raised $450 with a one-day lemonade and cookie stand, funds which they are donating to the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s initiative to

save polar bears and other arctic animals. The seven youngsters, all of whom have ties, either current or past, with Nicole Treffers home day care on Mac Storey Street in Richmond operated the lemon-

ade/cookie stand from the home’s laneway on Wednesday, July 28. But it was more than a one-day enterprise for them. First they had to decide where the funds raised would go. They did this via

a democratic process, a vote. And when the votes were tallied, it was a decision to raise money to help save polar bears. This charity lemonade stand has been on the summer agenda at Mrs. Treffers’ day care for five years now and this is the first time in the past four years that the funds have been raised for an animal-based, not people-oriented cause. The youngsters spent a day making the posters that were on display at the lemonade/cookie stand. They also spent time making flyers which they then distributed throughout the neighbourhood to advertise the event. The advertising also included an email outreach which Mrs. Treffers sent to her list of contacts including friends and family members. The youngsters also spent time making cookies which were sold at the lemonade stand. There were also some parents and friends who donated cookies for the fundraising event. So, everything was set and ready to go on Wednesday, July 28. The lemonade/ cookie stand would operate for one hour in the morning

and then for an hour and a half starting at 3:30 p.m. In the morning, a rain shower struck, forcing a move from the driveway into the double garage. It turned out to be a crowded space but the enterprise went ahead as planned and $240 was raised in the morning. In the afternoon, the stand was once again back in front of the garage and the people kept coming, from both far and near. There was someone from Perth. Another from Nova Scotia. And lots from the neighbourhood. They enjoyed the cookies at 50 cents each. They sipped the coloured lemonade at 50 cents a glass. They learned about the danger now being faced by polar bears in their warming environment. And at the end of the day, a total of $450 had been raised for the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s polar bear program. The youngsters involved, who range in age from two years old through to ten years old, were Leo Adamantidis, Lauren MacDonald, Samantha Garand, Holly Treffers, Mya Emond, Lauren Treffers and Marina Garand.

It will be coming from the Mick Armitage Band which will be performing on stage at Village Square in the second of three Thursday evening summer concerts sponsored by Waste Management in cooperation with the city of Ottawa. Besides classic rock ‘n roll, the band also plays rhythm and blues and a little bit of country music. For this performance in Stittsville, the Mick Armitage Band will have Pe-

ter White from Hemet, California as a special guest artist. The concert will begin at 7 p.m., running for an hour and a half. Those planning to attend are urged to bring along a lawn chair or blanket for seating. Those attending are also reminded to bring along their dancing shoes as the band likes to get the audience involved, either dancing or singing. Prior to the concert, beginning at 6 p.m., there will be a BBQ held, with proceeds going to youth programs in Stittsville. There is free admission to the concert but donations will be collected

Talent wanted

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF “America’s Got Talent” showcases entertainment talent from across the United States, with the television show providing these entertainers with their big chance.

Well, now Stittsville is going to have its own talent program, “Stittsville Has Talent.” It will not be broadcast across North America like “America’s Got Talent” but it will be an opportunity for local singers, dancers, comedians,

for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. The Mick Armitage Band has played throughout Canada, the United States, Ireland and Mexico. This is the second of three Thursday evening concerts in August at Village Square Park in Stittsville. The group “Silver Creek,” which has performed at Bluesfest in Ottawa, will be at Village Square on Thursday, Aug. 19 for a 7 p.m. concert. Village Square Park is located at the corner of Stittsville Main Street and Abbott Street in the heart of Stittsville.

All that is needed now is the local talent. All ages and all forms of entertainment are welcome. Anyone interested in taking part

Phone book on fire JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF A phone book and an ice box were both damaged by a vandal or vandals in Munster recently. Sometime during the overnight hours on a recent Thursday night/Friday morning, an unidentified person or persons set fire to a phone book in the phone booth situated near Mac’s store in Munster. The phone booth itself sustained only minor damage but the phone book and its plastic cover were severely damaged. The smoldering remains of the phone book were discovered shortly after the store opened for business on the Friday. The remains were doused with water. Then, sometime between midnight and 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 18, an unidentified person or persons attempted to force open the ice box outside Mac’s store by prying open the locked lid. However, the attempts to do this failed.

There is going to be a scarecrow theme to things this year, with contests held for those turning up in scarecrow costumes. Villagefest this year has

been moved up to Saturday, Sept. 11 to try to ensure good weather. Last year Villagefest was held on the first weekend in October and although the weather held, there was always the danger that the event would be wiped out by bad weather, thwarting all of the effort that goes into organizing a community event like this. 401544

City of Ottawa Councillor Reports By Shad Qadri, Councillor Ward Six Stittsville City of Ottawa The City of Ottawa has begun the design development for the addition of an $8.4 million, 34,000 square feet, new arena and change rooms to the Goulbourn Recreation Complex (GRC). Major components of the addition include a new NHL size ice surface that will be a twin of the existing surface (same board height, netting style, etc), six new change areas, expanded referee change facilities, a large atrium space for the tournament reception area and additional parking among many other features. The addition is intended to duplicate the look of the existing arena with a goal to compliment the site so that in the future a passer-by wouldn’t know an expansion occurred. The new arena will be built to the highest standards for Accessibility, to promote it as GRC’s sledge hockey / accessible skating area, thereby allowing the renovation of the players bench area in the existing arena and improve circulation which has been an issue for some time. The detail design is underway right now for a completion of sometime in January 2012. See it? Report it. My office has been receiving increasing calls reporting vandalism and disturbances in our community. It is important my office is informed of these matters, but it is incredibly important that the Police Service is also notified. Incidents can be reported anonymously if you are concerned about your safety. Every call is recorded and ensures that specific “hot spots” are identified. Always get a Report Number when you call as this will help on follow-up action.

GRC addition For life-threatening emergencies or crimes in progress call 9-1-1. To report alcohol and drug use in public, or suspicious activity of vehicles, please call 613-2306211. To report a theft, property damage, missing vehicle or stolen property, please call the Ottawa Police’s call centre at 613236-1222 ext. 7300. For by-law issues, such as noise complaints, please call the City’s helpline at 3-1-1. It is important these activities are being reported to Police in order to legitimize concerns. If Police see developing trends and increased call volume, they can allocate resources to combat the issue. If it fails to be reported, we run the risk of an issue not being addressed. Keep Ottawa clean, green and litterfree With the warm weather and sunshine, many of us are heading outside to enjoy our beautiful city. The most important thing we can all do to keep it beautiful is put litter and recyclables where they belong. Ottawa has 2,900 waste receptacles stationed all around our streets, parks and tourist sites. Many of these also have a place to deposit your recyclable materials. Look for the ‘LitterBug’ logo throughout the City. This logo is a reminder to fight against litter. By keeping Ottawa clean, there is a huge benefit to our tourism industry. Each year we welcome over 7.3 million visitors who spend over $1.18 billion. Of course, we all have a part to play by putting litter and recyclables where they belong but we can do more to fight the

“LitterBug” in Ottawa. • Put extinguished cigarette butts in appropriate waste containers. • Did you know that if every smoker in Ottawa throws just one butt on the ground every day that equals over 58 million butts on our streets, in our parks and in rivers every year? Each cigarette butt takes 15 years to decompose! • Volunteer to be part of the City’s community cleanup initiatives. • That includes Adopt-a-Park/Adopt-aRoadway programs and Cleaning the Capital. In 2009, more than 87,000 volunteers collected over 151,000 kg of litter. Fall Cleaning the Capital is set for September 15 to October 15. Registration starts on August 15. For more information on the City’s community cleanup initiatives visit ottawa.ca/clean or call 31-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401). • Report excessive litter by calling 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401). Let’s make sure we have the cleanest, most beautiful city for many years to come. Together, we can help keep Ottawa clean, green and litter-free. For more information, visit ottawa.ca/litterbug or call 3-1-1. Thank you for your patience I understand that with all the construction happening on Hazeldean Road, it can be frustrating. Until September 3, Hazeldean Road west of Stittsville Main Street and east of Carp Road is closed. The closures cause frustration not only for the businesses affected, but for commuters as well. I want to ensure the community that this project could have taken longer to complete in several phases. We have

the infrastructure-funding do get the construction done in less than a year and a half that will save any long-term headaches. I assure you that this short –term disruption is necessary and in the end, will make our community lifestyle better for all residents and businesses. Please remember that the many businesses lining Hazeldean Road remain open. These businesses depend heavily on the surrounding community – and that reliance is emphasized during major construction. I recognize it is difficult given the area conditions, but we must continue to offer our support to the businesses along Hazeldean Road, Main Street, as well as those throughout Stittsville. On behalf of Stittsville’s business community, I extend my sincerest appreciation and thanks for your continued support. I also want to thank residents for their patience and understanding during this process and want to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Always listening and acting on your concerns As your Councillor, I always welcome your keen input and ideas on how we can sustain and improve Stittsville. Please contact our office anytime by phone at 613-580-2476 or by e-mail at Shad.Qadri@ottawa.ca. My ward office is located in the Goulbourn Recreation Complex, located at 1500 Shea Road. The hours of operation for the summer are Mondays 9-1pm, Wednesdays 3-7pm, Fridays 9-4pm, and Saturday 912pm. Please do not hesitate to pay us a visit.

STITTSVILLE

IS PART OF CAST

Dinner theatre show features Peanuts gang JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The Peanuts gang has entertained people for years. Thanks, Charles Schulz. And now the Peanuts gang will be together on stage in the musical “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Thanks, Suzart Productions for staging this dinner theatre show on six nights over the next two weeks. And one of the adult cast members, playing the piano playing Schroeder, hails from Stittsville. Thanks, Marc Seguin. This will be Marc’s third role in the cast of a Suzart Productions play. Last year, he performed the role of “Lumiere” in a production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” and also performed in “Bringing Back the 50’s.” But Marc’s involvement with Suzart Productions goes back three years and involves a lot of behind the scenes work as well including set construction and stage crew duties in productions of Oliver, High School Musical, Wizard of Oz, Once Upon A Mattress, Bye Bye Birdie and Oklahoma. Indeed, his involvement with the Suzart Productions non-profit theatre company which specializes in affordable entertainment for the entire family began when his young-

Thefts from vehicles continue to happen JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Thefts from vehicles are continuing in Richmond and Munster. An unlocked vehicle on Dallaire Crescent in Richmond was rummaged through sometime after 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 17. A pair of men’s sunglasses was stolen from the glove box. There was three incidents

in Munster which were reported to the Ottawa Police Service on Sunday, July 18. Sometime between 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 17 and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 18, an unidentified person or persons rummaged through two unlocked vehicles on Dogwood Drive in Munster. Nothing was reported stolen. Sometime after 12:45 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Sunday, July

18, two GPS units, a CB radio and a satellite radio receiver were stolen from two vehicles that had been left unlocked in a driveway on Tarywood Avenue in Munster. Also, on Sunday, July 18, a car that had been left parked near the ball field in Munster was discovered broken into. The contents of the car had been strewn all over the ground.

Carlingwood Shopping Centre. The dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. with the meal involving a choice of pork tenderloin, chicken breast or roasted vegetable polenta. Reservations are required and they can be made by calling 613-828-3500. Suzart Productions, founded by Elaine McCausland and Susan Dacey, specializes in

family entertainment at an affordable price, with the goal of providing an opportunity for people of all ages to experience the world of theatre in all of its aspects, from behind the scenes to acting. Just ask Marc Seguin. The upcoming season is going to include productions of “Willy Wonka” and “Anything Goes.”

est daughter became involved as an actor, singer and dancer. He volunteered to help out behind the scenes in set construction and stage crew roles. Marc enjoyed the positive environment that prevailed and as his whole family became more deeply involved with Suzart Productions, so did he. His youngster daughter now sits on the Suzart Board as youth representative and is working at their summer camps. His wife will be making her directorial debut in the production of “Willy Wonka” in the upcoming season. And his eldest daughter has been a musical director for some Suzart shows. Marc himself has been an assistant stage manager, set designer and now actor. He will be the stage manager for the upcoming production of “Willy Wonka.” While he enjoys both stage work and behind the scenes work, he is looking forward to his role of Schroeder not only because he is a Peanuts fan but also because Schroeder is a very likeable, albeit, complex character. He likes the fact that Schroeder has fun with most of the other characters and he admires his devotion to his hero Beethoven. Marc also points out that in this dinner theatre production, he is getting to work with a group of very seasoned adult actors with both experience and training. “I am very excited to work with them,” he notes. These fellow actors include KraigPaul Proulx as Charlie Brown, Kathleen Arbour as Lucy, Dani Bone as Snoopy, Michelle Nash as Sally and Keenan Viau as Linus. While he has acted before with Suzart and indeed back in high school were he had roles in “The Music Man” and “Oliver,” this is Marc’s first dinner theatre performance. But he is confident that the talented cast will succeed in what he predicts will be a great show – “light, funny with catchy songs”. With a three course meal also included, he feels that the $40 per person cost offers an excellent value for anyone’s entertainment dollar. This Suzart dinner theatre production of “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown”, a musical which tells the story of an average day in the life of the famous comic strip child hero Charlie Brown, The show will take place this week from Thursday, Aug. 5 through Saturday, Aug. 7 and then next week as well, from Thursday, Aug. 12 through Saturday, Aug. 12 at the banquet hall at the Woodroffe United Church on Woodroffe Avenue behind the

Ringette and figure skating – both sports involve skating. And so it is not surprising that these two sporting groups have come together locally to benefit from the power skating program offered by the Goulbourn Skating Club. Last season about 80 West Ottawa Wild ringette players took part in weekly drills and skating sessions in the Goulbourn Skating Club’s power skating program at the Richmond Memorial Community Centre in Richmond. The program has met the needs of the ringette players. Indeed, Hal Stewart, recreational coordinator for the West Ottawa Ringette Association is high in his praise of the program. “The Goulbourn Skating Club’s power skating program offers high quality, professional instruction and we are hoping to expand our relationship with the Goulbourn Skating Club for the 2010/2011 season,” he says. The Goulbourn Skating Club, for its part, is proud of its professional coaching staff that is trained by Skate Canada on how to teach the fundamentals of power skating. Indeed, CanPowerSkate is the only nationally regulated power skating program in Canada. This program is an action packed, high energy instructional power skating program geared to hockey and ringette skaters. It focuses on balance, power, agility, speed and endurance. Skills, techniques and conditioning drills are taught in a progressive format that emphasizes how the skills apply to game situations. There is also a skill award component that helps provide incentives and motivation for the skaters. CanPowerSkate is geared to skaters aged about six or older who already have mastered basic forward and backward skating skills. They must be able to skate the length of the rink using alternate strides and

be able to stop on command without use of the boards. For safety reasons, participants wear fully hockey or ringette equipment, all CSA approved. When a skater registers for a CanPowerSkate program with the Goulbourn Skating Club, the skater also becomes a member of Skate Canada, the national sport governing body for figure skating in Canada. Other benefits from the CanPowerSkate program include participation in a unique skill testing system, parent information sheets, program updates and report cards, special CanPowerSkate events and club functions, and participation in a healthy lifestyle activity. The CanPowerSkate program consists of skills divided into six levels, arranged in progressions gradually increasing in complexity. Levels 1 to 3 focus on the fundamentals of skating. Levels 4 to 6 place additional focus on the acquisition of efficient technique, speed, agility, technical aspects of stride and acceleration and skating with the puck or, in the case of ringette, the ring. Skaters are evaluated on skill level and are timed as they perform a test involving skills in a course-like pattern. The skater receives a mark combining his skill performance plus test time. This determines whether the skater receives a Bronze, Silver or Gold award bar for that particular level. Kelly McKinnon and Brent Carty, the two Goulbourn Skating Club coaches for the power skating program, are dedicated to providing the best developmental experience for every skater. The program is designed to take players to another level and to inspire them to their best performances ever. The Goulbourn Skating Club runs power skating programs at both the Richmond Memorial Community Centre in Richmond and the Stittsville District Community Centre in Stittsville.

The Stittsville 56ers had their brooms out in Greater Ottawa Fastball League action last week. They swept a doubleheader from the North Gower Marlboroughs. The first win was a come-frombehind effort for a close 6-5 victory but the second game was a 9-1 blowout win for the 56ers. In the first game of the twin bill, the 56ers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Darren Featherstone. A solo home run over the centre field fence by Scott Herriot made it 2-0 for the 56ers in the third inning. However, the Marlboroughs got their bats going and had a 4-2 by the fifth inning. It was 5-3 for the Marlboroughs going into the 56ers final at bat but

the 56ers struck for three runs and a 6-5 victory in the game. Darren Featherstone was the winning pitcher for the 56ers in this game. In the second game of the double header, the 56ers scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Another four runs in the second inning made it 8-0. The Marlboroughs came back with one run in the third inning but the game was called after five innings with the 56ers ahead by a 9-1 margin. Kyle Jamieson was the winning pitcher for the 56ers in this game. The Stittsville 56ers are moving in on the leaders in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League standings. The 56ers now have 23 points thanks to 11 wins, 9 losses and 1 tie. The first place Quyon Combat Flyers have 31 points while the second place Kars Aces have 30 points.

GRADUATE

Tori Roberts to help out as health intern in Ghana JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF

Tori Roberts of Stittsville will not be off to the University of Ottawa this fall as planned for its program in human rights and conflict studies. Instead, she will be spending the coming year as a youth intern with the Canadian International Development Agency, eventually travelling to Ghana where she will work with health care projects and teach English in schools. Upon her return to Canada at the end of March, 2011, she will tell about her experiences with school presentations. Tori, who is 17 and was the valedictorian at last June’s graduation ceremony for Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville, gave a glimpse of what her coming year will be like to members of the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville at the Club’s July 27 meeting in Stittsville. As a health care intern, she will be off in September to live with a host family in Newfoundland for training. In December, she will leave for Ghana, staying in an impoverished fishing village about a half an hour away from the capital of the country. There, she will be involved with education dealing with malaria prevention, with proper care of babies and about HIV Aids and its prevention. She will also be teaching English in schools. At the end of March, she will be returning home where she hopes to visit schools to tell about her experiences in Ghana.

Wanting to help, especially in Africa, is nothing new for Tori. In 2001, after sending a Christmas shoe box to Africa, she received a letter from a boy in an orphanage in Sierra Leone, thanking her for the gifts in the box. She did lose track of him but eventually did hear from his aunt, giving an update about him. In the spring of 2008, Tori became involved with the Invisible Children organization. This evolved from three filmmakers who did a documentary on the ongoing civil war in northern Uganda which is known as the most neglected humanitarian crisis in the world. The exploitation of child soldiers is one of the great tragedies of this civil war. Tori set out to increase interest in this crisis and to undertake fundraising. Hundreds attended the screenings of the Invisible Children film at Sacred Heart. The film told the story of the ravages of AIDS and war and the use of child soldiers. The Sacred Heart community ended up raising over $12,000 for an adopted partner school in northern Uganda. Tori also organized a march and campout in downtown Ottawa which draw television coverage and publicized the plight of these child soldiers in Uganda. All of this garnered Tori recognition as she was named Youth Activist of the Year and was one of 60 finalists in a national program recognizing community leadership.

Besides now going to Ghana to help out as a health care worker intern, Tori also wants to help out the community in Ghana by providing one or more sets of jerseys for recreational soccer teams there. Soccer is big in Ghana which was the last African country knocked out of the recent World Cup of Soccer competition in South Africa. But to do this, Tori has to raise $400 to ship

the jerseys to Ghana. She is convinced that she can do this, perhaps with the help of the Rotary Club. “I know what an impact it will have on the community,” she said in her presentation at the Rotary Club meeting. Tori has a blog on which she will be describing her adventures and work in the coming year. It can be found at http://toris-travels.blogspot.com/

Kanata West Environmental Assessment Notices of Completion Carp River, Poole Creek and Feedmill Creek Restoration Revisions and Addenda to Environmental Screening Report Revised Environmental Screening Report Report and Addenda Now Available for Review In June of 2006 the Carp River, Poole Creek and Feedmill Creek Restoration Environmental Screening Report was completed in accordance with the requirements for a Schedule B Project as defined in the Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Process (2000). The Minister of the Environment received Part II Order requests for the project asking that the project be subject to an individual environmental assessment. Due to concerns raised in regard to the accuracy of the models used by the City, a Third Party Review of the models supporting the projects was undertaken. As part of Conditions 1 and 2 of the Minister’s Order made in response to the Part II Order requests, updated documentation has been provided including the results of the Third Party Review, updated water level information, flow modelling data, a water level and flow monitoring plan, a detailed Implementation Plan related to phasing and stormwater management. Following the completion of the Third Party Review and the other matter required to address the Minister’s Order, the Environmental Assessment was required to be updated and this Notice was required to be issued. In addition to the updates required as a result of the Third Party Review, the Carp River Restoration Project has been updated to incorporate current conditions and direction received from City Staff and Council including a permanent widening of the Carp River corridor. An Addendum to the Carp River EA Screening Report with these updates has now been completed and has been issued for public review along with the following supporting Documentation:

increased sinuosity, aquatic connections to the Carp River, local bank treatment and riparian plantings.

Revisions and Addenda to Kanata If there are no Part II Order requests received, the City of Ottawa / Kanata West Owners Group West Master Servicing Study intend to proceed with the Master Plan. Written Report Now Available for Review In June of 2006 the Kanata West Master Servicing Study (MSS) was completed following Approach 2, which fulfills Phases 1 through 2 of the Class Environmental Assessment (EA) process for Schedule B projects and 15 projects were identified. Four of the projects were subject to Part II Order requests. Eleven of the projects were considered approved and five projects have since started construction.

Due to concerns raised in regard to the accuracy of the models used by the City, a Third Party Review of the models supporting the projects was undertaken. As part of the Minister’s Order made in response to the Part II Order requests, following the completion of the Third Party Review, the MSS was required to be updated and this notice was required to be issued. The Kanata West MSS (2006) and the following supporting documentation are available for review: • Third Party Review, March 2009 • Kanata West Implementation Plan, July 2010 • Updated Public Consultation Report, July 2010 The Third Party Review did not identify any requirements for amendments to the previously approved projects. Accordingly, only the projects previously subject to Part II Order requests noted below may be considered for additional Part II Order requests. Sanitary Servicing Projects • Signature Ridge Pump Station Upgrade and associated gravity sanitary sewers (Schedule B)

• Carp River Restoration EA 2006 • Third Party Review, March 2009 • Kanata West Implementation Plan, July 2010 • Updated Public Consultation Report, July 2010 • Carp River Restoration Plan – Widening Alternatives Final Report by Greenland International Consulting Ltd., May 2010

Stormwater Management Projects • Stormwater Management Pond # 1 and associated storm sewers (Schedule B) • Stormwater Management Pond # 2 and associated storm sewers (Schedule B) • Stormwater Management Pond # 5 and associated storm sewers (Schedule B)

The proposed restoration of Carp River involves full restoration within the Kanata West reach of the river including: a change to the channel as well as the following design elements: increased sinuosity; reduction in channel cross-section; creation of ponds and deltas; “nested” channels; varied substrate; riparian vegetation planting; and multi-use pathways as part of larger local and regional pathway systems.

If concerns regarding these projects cannot be resolved in discussion with the City of Ottawa/ Kanata West Owners Group, a person/party may request that the Minister of Environment make an order for the project to comply with Part II of the Environmental Assessment Act (referred to as Part II Order). This request must be received by the Minister at the address noted below, prior to August 29, 2010.

The proposed restoration of Poole Creek involves four areas of the creek that require local improvements including channel realignment, removal of an island and narrowing of the channel, removal of debris and an old bridge, valley wall treatment, creation of a delta marsh and riparian plantings.

A copy of the request shall also be sent to the City of Ottawa and Kanata West Owners Group. If there are no requests received by August 29, 2010, the projects will proceed to design and construction provided that funding is available.

The proposed restoration of Feedmill Creek involves four areas of the creek that require local improvements including channel realignment,

Kanata West Environmental Assessment Notices of Completion Report Now Available for Review In June of 2006 the Kanata West Transportation Master Plan (TMP) was completed following Approach 3 in the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment which fulfills Phases 1 through 4 of the Environmental Assessment (EA) process for Schedule B and C projects and six individual roadway projects and a rapid transit project were identified. Two of the projects were subject to Part II Order requests. The other four projects proceeded through to implementation, with one having already been constructed and one currently undergoing detailed design. The rapid transit project is subject to additional environmental assessment requirements and a separate EA has commenced for the West Transitway Connection.

A copy of the request must also be sent to the City of Ottawa and Kanata West Owners Group. If there are no requests received by August 29, 2010, the projects may proceed to design and construction, provided that funding is available. Copies of the Master Plan Report, Addendum, and supporting documentation are available for review at the following locations. Visit ottawa.ca/kanatawest: for background information on the Carp River Third Party Review. If there are no Part II Order requests received, the City of Ottawa / Kanata West Owners Group intend to proceed with the Master Plan. Written concerns or comments may be submitted within 30 calendar days from July 30, 2010: Kanata West Land Owners Group Michael Green, B.Sc. Due to concerns raised in regard to the accuracy of the models used by the City, a Third Party Review of the models supporting the projects was undertaken. As part of the Minister’s Order made in response to the Part II Order requests, following the completion of the Third Party Review, the TMP was required to be updated and this Notice was required to be issued. In addition to the updates required as a result of the Minister’s Order, the City has updated the current transportation conditions and the long-term needs for the area in the TMP. An Addendum to the TMP with these updates has been completed and has been issued for public review along with the following supporting documentation: • Kanata West TMP 2006 • Third Party Review, March 2009 • Kanata West Implementation Plan, July 2010 • Updated Public Consultation Report, July 2010

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Another choice is now available for those who want to shop at a farmers’ market. There is the current farmers’ market every Thursday at the Bradley’s Insurance parking lot on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville. There is also the long-running Carp Farmers Market at the Carp fairgrounds in Carp every Saturday. Now there is the Kanata Farmers’ Market. It opened last Saturday, July 31 and will continue every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. until the end of October. Located in the parking lot at 420 Hazeldean Road, just a short drive from Stittsville, this new farmers’ market has started with 11 market stands manned by eight different vendors, all of whom are regulars at other Ottawa area markets. The site is the plaza on the south side of Hazeldean Road at Carbrooke Avenue, immediately west of the Hazeldean Mall. All of the vendors are from Ottawa and area farms. The vendors include Rochon Farms (vegetables, strawberries, raspberries, herbs, melons and hanging baskets); Hall’s Apple Market (apples and apple products such as ciders, pies and jelly); A Country Garden (honey, garlic, tomatoes, peas and cut flowers); Glengyle Garlic (garlic bulbs and braids, cookbooks, pickles, relishes, salsas and soups); BearBrook Farm (game meat stews, sausages, pates); O’Brien Farms (beef raised without artificial hormones or antibiotics); ArtIs-In Bakery (breads, scones and cookies); and PrettyFours (French-style macaroons, fruit pastries and mini cheesecakes). This new Kanata Farmers’ Market will operate every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.

Kiddyland always draws the crowds at the annual Richmond Fair (Sept. 16-Sept. 19 this year) – the younger set, that is. And why not? Kiddyland offers free entertainment for children. And what entertainment! There’s children’s entertainer Mary Lambert; Doug Barr’s children’s show; Rock the Arts Puppets, and The Cow Guys. In addition, there’s the Milord Entertainment trampoline wall, and Little Ray’s Living Dragons a.k.a Giant Lizards of the World. On top of all of this entertainment, there’s the Countryside Petting Farm and Pony Rides, Grandpa’s Fantasy Land Mobile Railroad, the Land ‘o Lakes Klown and Face Painting Shrine Unit, Maple the Cow, and Agriculture Awareness and Educational Dis-

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF On Thursday, July 22, just after midnight, two teens came across an unlocked vehicle on Ottawa Street in Richmond. A search revealed an ignition key and the teens took it for CELEBRATING, FROM 1

It is speculated that the initial James Cullen had perhaps discovered that his homestead location was susceptible to flooding and this is why he gave it up. Indeed, a drive up the long laneway today parallels a municipal drain which flows alongside, testimony to the land’s watery past. The longstanding log walls and stone foundation are still in place, albeit covered with plaster on the inside and wrapped on the outside with wood siding. A summer kitchen was added, just for summertime use, but in 1960, this summer kitchen and its second floor were modernized and winterized. A sun room, family room, and a two vehicle garage were added in the late 1980’s, completing the farm home as it stands today. Also on the farmstead are the log barns which have served the Hobbs family well, including the late Clarence Hobbs, husband of current owner Lillian Hobbs, who died in 1985 but who had brought modern agriculture and equipment to the farm. He developed a prize winning Guernsey dairy herd and his swine and cereal crop exhibits even made it to the Royal Winter Fair. When Keith and Clifton Hobbs, the sons of Lillian and Clarence Hobbs, were growing up and involved in 4H, they al-

a spin. As the teens drove down McBean Street, a patrol officer happened on the scene and noticed that the vehicle’s tail lights were out. When the police officer stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver, his suspicions were immediately aroused that

ways showed a Guernsey calf. A memorial stained glass window at the Munster United Church was commissioned by Lillian Hobbs in honour of Joshua and Maude Hobbs, Elwin and Lila Hobbs and Clarence Hobbs. The window was officially donated by Lillian and her two sons, so that the window in effect commemorates several generations of the Hobbs family, all associated with the Hobbs family farm at 7542 Mansfield Road. Joshua Hobbs and Maude Caldwell, who were married in 1894 and then moved to 7542 Mansfield Road, joined the Munster United Church (then the Munster Methodist Church) after their marriage, beginning the long Hobbs family association with that church. Lillian Hobbs is now retired from a 35 year teaching career but she remains busy. She acquired her Master’s Degree in mission studies from St. Paul University in Ottawa and is a licensed lay preacher. As such, she conducts weekly services at local retirement homes and elsewhere. She regularly visits the Ottawa Civic Hospital to spend time with patients in a pastoral capacity. She has also been working on writing a history of the Munster United Church, at least up to the year 1970 when the suburban development at Munster went ahead. Her account of the church’s history may

something was wrong. Discovering that the vehicle was stolen, the officer placed the driver under arrest, charging him with breaching his conditions and for joy riding. He was taken away for processing while the passenger was returned home to his mother.

run as many as 200 pages, complete with pictures, when finished. Right now, she has put the project aside while planning the farm’s 150th anniversary celebration. The celebration, as current planning goes, will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14 with a mix and mingle opportunity at the farmstead. This will include visits to the historic log barns and displays of period information and equipment, such as a Cockshutt 30 tractor dating from 1949. At 5 p.m., there will be food served while at 7 p.m., the entertainment will get underway with a folk singer, fiddlers, step dancers, square dancers and others. Fireworks will wind up the evening. On Sunday, Aug. 15, the celebration will resume at 2 p.m. with a folk singer, a Gospel quartet and an old-time hymn sing. There will be a potluck supper starting at 4 p.m. This schedule of celebration events, which will go ahead rain or shine, may change, so a check at the website www. HobbsFarm1860.ca is advised. Those planning to attend this celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Hobbs family farming at 7542 Mansfield Road are urged to R.S.V.P. to info@ HobbsFarm1860.ca so that Lillian Hobbs and her family have an idea of how many to expect at the celebration.

The general service interval is 3 months or 5000km, whichever comes first. Some synthetic oils are longer, up to 25000km on newer European vehicles. Some vehicles have monitors that will give different intervals, but if these monitors fail, observe the 3/5000 guideline. If unsure, consult your owner’s manual as to what interval applies to your vehicle.

Q

I’m just not sure if I am ready for retirement living, how can I be sure?

A

We encourage you to go and visit 4 or 5 homes in your area and stay for a short trial stay at one or two that you have narrowed it down to. That way, you will really get a good feel for the home, the staff, the other residents, activities, etc. Each home has it’s very own feel and you want to make sure that your new home feels right for you! 27 Weaver Cres., Kanata 613-591-3991 www.kingswayarms.com waldenmarketing@magma.ca

How often do I need to change my oil?

Q

Hockey season is starting. Why should I get my child’s sports guard from a dentist as opposed to a sporting goods store?

If the sporting goods store mouth guard is not bitten into properly by your child, the impact from a trauma to the jaw or teeth may not be well distributed and instead it may be concentrated into one area. Sports guards prevent broken teeth but more importantly they prevent the jaw from impacting the skull bones in the jaw joint and causing a concussion. A sports guard made by a dental professional would prevent any of these situations from occurring. Have a great Hockey season!
