NEW GOULBOURN MALE CHORUS

Singers wanted JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Singing in the shower is satisfying. Singing in a karaoke night is exhilarating. But singing with others in a male chorus is priceless. And men in Stittsville and Goulbourn are now going to have the chance to live this priceless experience thanks to the interest of a veteran church and community choir director and the generosity of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Stittsville by offering rehearsal space. The Goulbourn Male Chorus will begin rehearsals this September under the direction of Stittsville resident Robert Dueck who has directed numerous church and community choirs and has a wide variety of music experience. Indeed, it is his declared passion for traditional sacred and secular choral music that sparked his desire to start a male chorus for singers from Stittsville and communities in Goulbourn. This male chorus is being created to provide male singers with the opportunity to socialize with others and to have the enjoyment of making music through choral singing. Eventually, the new chorus will provide entertainment at fundraising events or dinners at area churches and at community events. This new Goulbourn Male Chorus will rehearse on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 8:30

p.m., with session one running from midSeptember to mid-December and a second session running from mid-January to mid-May. Although the chorus will be a not-for-profit group, there will be a $40 per session membership fee to cover the cost of various music packages and to build a music library. So, just who should consider joining? Well, first and foremost, the chorus will appeal to men who love to sing and want to have fun doing it. Forget the shower; forget karaoke night; do it with the Goulbourn Male Chorus. There is a minimum requirement to have an ability to match pitch. Men who have choir or choral experience and know the importance of creating vocal blends are specially welcomed. A singer should be able to sight read music but this skill can be developed beyond any elementary stage. The new Goulbourn Male Chorus will sing a wide selection of music, ranging from traditional sacred such as gospel and spirituals to secular light-hearted fun concert tunes to folk songs to seasonal tunes. For more information or to express and interest in becoming involved with this new Goulbourn Male Chorus, please call the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church office at 613-831-1256,leaving your name and home phone number or send an email to music director Robert Dueck at dueckrobt@gmail.com.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Sterling Howie has died. But while he passed away on Sunday, Aug. 15 in hospital with his family by his side, he will never be forgotten for his dedication and involvement in the Stittsville community, including over 40 years as a volunteer firefighter and years as operator of one of the village’s iconic businesses, Switzer’s Welding & Repair. Indeed, his memory will live on as the Stittsville fire hall, now known as Ottawa Fire Service Station 81, bears his name. The fire hall was formally named the H. Sterling Howie Fire Station in December, 2000, just months after it was formally opened in May, 2000. This name runs across the top of the fire hall, over the giant doors through which the fire vehicles pass as they leave the fire hall on emergency calls. When the surprise announcement about naming the fire hall in his honour was made at a gathering of Goulbourn firefighters in Dec., 2000, in comments made earlier in the evening, Mr. Howie had said that the happiest moment of his long volunteer firefighting career had been the opening of the new fire station in Stittsville. Calling it a “dream come true,” he had played a role in its creation, having been involved with the planning for the new facility for five years. A plaque which was unveiled that night dedicating the new station in his honour stated the reason for the dedication: “For his years of loyal and dedicated volunteer service to his community.” In making the announcement, then-Goulbourn fire chief and current Sector Chief Terry Gervais said that in his years in the fire service, he had never met a person more dedicated to a fire department and to his community than Mr. Howie. This dedication as a volunteer firefighter, businessman and community supporter was acknowledged by the community in April, 2009 when Mr. Howie was presented with the Roger Griffiths Memorial Citizen of the Year Award at the Stittsville Appreciation Awards night hosted by city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri. This award, which had been presented annually for over a decade by the former township of Goulbourn and was revived in 2009 by councillor Qadri after the absence of a number of years, goes to an individual who best exemplifies community involvement and participation. To Mr. Howie, it was an immense honour. “The greatest thing that has ever happened to me,” is how he described his receipt of this award. When this award was presented in April, 2009, Mr. Sterling had served as a volunteer firefighter in the community for over 40 years, having started in 1967. He became a District Chief at the beginning of the 1990’s and was formally a Captain at the time of his passing last Sunday, Aug. 15. He mentored new volunteer firefighters over the years and had been involved in hundreds of emergency fire calls over the years including some of the community’s most devastating such as the Ashton Feed Mill fire and the Burnt Lands brush fire. He also was involved in the Goulbourn firefighters’ epic response to the Ice Storm of 1998. Mr. Howie’s calm demeanour and wise counsel helped in the change from the former Goulbourn Fire Department to the new

Ottawa Fire Service with the amalgamation creating the new city of Ottawa in January, 2001. While he readily acknowledged that this marked the “end of an era” for volunteer firefighting in Stittsville and Goulbourn, he also realized that this marked a “new beginning” and he worked with others to ensure a smooth transition and to ensure that volunteer firefighters continued to play a role in the community’s firefighting service. In announcing Mr. Howie’s death, Sector Chief Terry Gervais acknowledged Mr. Howie’s important role as a leader of local firefighters and in the community. “Captain Howie was a key officer, not only for the Stittsville Station, but also our fire service and his community,” he wrote in his announcement email. “He will be deeply missed by all whom he has touched,” the Sector Chief continued. Mr. Howie was always such a key member of the volunteer firefighters in Stittsville because he not only lived for many years on Stittsville Main Street, not far from the fire hall, allowing him to respond quickly to calls, but also because he was the long time owner and operator of Switzer’s Welding, also on Stittsville Main Street and also not far from the fire hall. This allowed him to respond promptly to virtually every fire call. He loved the community of Stittsville. When he received the Roger Griffiths Memorial Citizen of the Year Award in 2009, he praised Stittsville in his remarks at the ceremony. “Stittsville has been probably one of the greatest places to live and it’s been a real hometowny town,” he said at the time. Mr. Howie and his wife Grace moved from the village a few years ago but he remained a fixture around the village as he continued to operate Switzer’s Welding & Repair. Sterling Howie, who was born in 1943, is survived by his wife of 46 years, the former Grace Brydges, and his children Bonnie Harris (Doug), Cheryl Campbell (Russ), Stephen (Connie) and Tanya Belland (Terry). He is also survived by ten grandchildren as well as by his brother Allan and his sisters Emma Syme and Doris Murray. He was predeceased by his brothers Armer and Bill. The funeral service is being held on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Stittsville United Church on Fernbank Road in Stittsville, followed by a reception at the Stittsville fire station which is named after him. In memoriam donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Diabetes Association would be appreciated by the family.

Loss of an exceptional firefighter and leader Volunteer firefighters have played a major role in community building in Stittsville and area over the years. Even with the advent of the new amalgamated city of Ottawa, volunteer firefighters have continued to be one of the prime sources of community spirit and involvement in Stittsville. Their fire protection and emergency services no doubt make them an essential part of the community. But it is of course their willingness and desire to do this as volunteers that makes them stand out as beacons of community involvement. They strive to be the best; they take their training seriously; they take their role as community protectors seriously. But they go beyond this – they do what they do because they are helping their neighbours, their friends, their fellow residents. That is why they are in community parades, are at fun fairs and attend community events. That is why they host the annual Canada Day seniors breakfast right in their own hall. They are contributing to their community. It is not just a job

EARLY

to them; it is giving back to their community. The volunteer firefighters in Stittsville and Goulbourn lost one of their own this week, one who epitomized for more than four decades what it means to be a volunteer firefighter. Sterling Howie, who was also a longtime Stittsville businessman, died after a battle with cancer. He gained the respect and admiration of his fellow volunteer firefighters through his calm, friendly demeanour, his ready availability, his common sense wisdom and his faithful service. He was steady as a rock, an unchanging force in an ever changing world. This is what made him such an exceptional firefighter and leader. He did not make hurried, rash decisions. You knew this even if you visited his business, Switzer’s Welding & Repair. There he would be sitting in his traditional welding clothing in his small office, surrounded by a seeming lack of order. The shop itself seemed dark and had a welder’s aroma and vista to it. But all of this did not matter – what mattered

was that Sterling was there. He would calmly assess the need and take over. “Come back Thursday,” he might say on a Monday. And when you did, the job would be done. That was Sterling. Calm, steady, quiet. But reliable, loyal, hard working. It is no wonder that the volunteer firefighters named their marvelous new fire station in honour of Sterling back in the year 2000. He was the firefighter’s firefighter; his name on the building meant that the firefighters using this as their base could be relied upon to be there when needed, just like he always was for over 40 years. In his lifetime, Sterling Howie showed that you can be appreciated when you go about your life and do it with competence and feeling, when you give it all you have and when you do it because you love it, you love your community and you want to serve. This is what he did; this is why he was so respected and admired; and this is why he will be remembered long into the future.

INTERVENTION FOR AUTISM

BBQ for QuickStart SPECIAL TO THE NEWS QuickStart is an organization that advocates early intervention for children with autism. Emanuele and Angela Leonforte of the Pocopazzo Restaurant in Stittsville are strong supporters of QuickStart. Their Pocopazzo & Friends Cookbook has raised over $23,000 for the organization. Megan Ellwood of Stittsville, who was honoured as the city of Ottawa’s Youth Citizen of the Year earlier this year, is the fundraising coordinator for QuickStart. The organization’s next fundraising event is a BBQ which is being held this Saturday, Aug. 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Andrew Haydon Park in Nepean. Otto’s Planet is donating all of the food and supplies for the BBQ which will really help this fundraising venture. Everyone, especially families, is encouraged to attend this BBQ and help support QuickStart and its work in the Ottawa area supporting and advocating for early intervention programs for children with autism. QuickStart was started by Suzanne Jacobson of Kanata, a grandparent whose grandson Alex was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Sept., 2006. Upon learning that waiting times for assessment, treatment and services in Ottawa are lengthy, she launched QuickStart to advocate for early intervention for children with autism. Research shows

Bear spotted crossing Trans Canada Trail SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Those using the Trans Canada Trail west of Stittsville should be aware that bears have been spotted in that area. Stittsville residents Marjorie Gillick and Lyn Arsenault were on the Trail on Friday morning, Aug. 13, about halfway between Jinkinson Road and the Trans Canada Pipeline crossing, when a bear crossed the Trail in front of them. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resourc-

es website states that bears usually avoid humans. However, it does remind people that bears are powerful and potentially dangerous animals. The website advises that if a bear is encountered while enjoying the outdoors, do not approach the bear to get a better look. If the bear is not paying any attention to you, slowly and quietly back away while watching the bear to make sure that it is not following you.

Telling Rotarians about library JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The public computers at the Stittsville branch of the Ottawa Public Library are popular. Did we say popular? How about super popular! In 2009, a total of 10,761 library visitors used a public access computer at the branch. Use of these computers has to be booked in one-hour time slots. What makes this figure even more amazing is that there are only five such public access computers at the branch that are available for such booking. So, you can see that they are well used for public access for the internet and email. This is just one of the facts about the Stittsville branch and about the Ottawa Public Library system overall that Gerard Seguin told to members of the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville at the Club’s meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 10. Mr. Seguin is the chief development officer for the Ottawa Public Library Foundation, the fundraising arm of the Ottawa Public Library. Besides heavy use of the public access computers,

the Stittsville branch is well used, with 105,600 visitors to the branch in 2009. Over the past four years for which statistics are available, circulation at the Stittsville branch has increased by 32 percent (2005 versus 2009 figures) to a total of 193,244. The Stittsville branch’s experience is reflective of the Ottawa Public Library system as a whole, where items borrowed, library visits, items used in the library and electronic web visits all grew when comparing the 2008 numbers with the 2009 status. A total of 10,625,000 items were borrowed from the Ottawa Public Library system in 2009 while there were 5,090,000 visitors to the various branches. Electronic web visits went from 5,783,000 in 2008 to 6,153,000 in 2009. The Ottawa Public Library system today has 33 branches, one of which is located in Stittsville. There are also two bookmobiles in use. The system attracts 10,000 visitors per day and has a collection of 2.3 million items. The Ottawa Public Library system has the highest

annual borrowing rate per capita per year in the province at 11.6 items per person in the city. “We’re quite a remarkable library system,” Mr. Seguin said, noting that the Ottawa Public Library system is the largest bilingual system in North America. He also told the Rotarians that the library is not just a place to borrow books, CDs and DVD’s but that a library card can be used to obtain museum passes, get discounts on theatre and concert performances, borrow pedometers and kilowatt meters and access Ottawa’s university libraries. “It’s like a loyalty card, not just a library card,” Mr. Seguin said, saying that the library system is like having 33 retail outlets in the city for those organizations with which the library partners on these initiatives. Some branches are now selling OC Transpo passes and other branches are collecting used batteries for recycling. “The library is a tremendous touch point for the community,” Mr. Seguin said, with the branches offering services such as business development informa-

tion and helping newcomers to Canada navigate government agencies. People are missing out on a lot if they do not visit their local library branch, he said. He added that one of the fastest growing demographics using the library in the city is teens, with the library system showing a 14 percent year over year growth in this age group. He said that the available of Wii’s and Intendo’s are drawing youth to the library branches where they are also exposed to books. He pointed out that whereas computer savvy youth are visiting the library and are getting turned on there by books, reading-loving seniors are discovering the joys of computers when they visit the library. Mr. Seguin lauded the Stittsville library and invited the Rotary Club to consider how it might help out the branch or the Ottawa Public Library system. “An investment in your library is really an investment in your community,” he said, adding that the public library is free to everybody and is constantly adding new services. For instance, the Ottawa Public Library is now offering courses in

how to book travel online since this is becoming such a popular thing to do. The Ottawa Public Library Foundation, created in 2002, is a separate, arms length, incorporated fundraising organization for the Ottawa Public Library system. It is one of only a few such organizations in Canada. The Foundation addresses its fundraising to meet the needs of the library system that are not being met in its regular, tax-supported budget. Part of the Foundation’s work revolves around raising awareness of the library

and its services, based on the belief that if people do not know about the library, how can they be expected to support its fundraising initiatives. The Ottawa Public Library has a 35 million dollar annual budget and employs the equivalent of 500 full time staff. Since 2002, the Foundation has raised over two million dollars for the Ottawa Public Library. This has been done through direct mail campaigns, special events and advocating for major and planned gifts such as bequests in wills.

Defending champion VIP plowman looking to have fun It’s called the VIP class at the Ottawa Carleton Plowing Match – Very Important People. But could VIP also stand for Very Impressive Plowing? Not likely. City of Ottawa Rideau-Goulbourn ward councillor Glenn Brooks, who has competed in the VIP class at the Ottawa Carleton

Plowing Match for about 20 years by his reckoning, admits that the VIP plowing outing is enjoyable but as for the plowing – that may be another thing. “It’s really a social event for VIP’s,” he says as he prepares to defend the VIP plowing title which he won at last year’s Plowing Match. Although he himself grew up on a farm, attended local plowing

matches as a youngster and over the years has plowed a good number of acres, he does admit that many who enter and even win the VIP plowing class even find it difficult to turn on a tractor. He says that personally he likes going to the Plowing Match to talk to farmers and to see the Queen of the Furrow candidates plow. Councillor Brooks does have admiration for those who are the

serious competitors at plowing matches. “It really does take a lot of practice,” he says about plowing competitively. It involves having the right tractor, setting the plow correctly and even having to know something about soils. It makes a different, for example, if a person is plowing in heavy clay as opposed to a sandy loam.

Councillor Brooks, who will be at this year’s Ottawa Carleton Plowing Match at the Bert Smith farm adjacent to the Eagleson Road just south of Fallowfield Road, predicts that it will be a fun outing. However, he does lament that plowing competitively seems to be a dying art in this area. He, though, likes the fact that plowing and plowing matches are a reminder of the area’s rural roots.

New Patients Welcome

The Ottawa-Carleton Plowing Match is changing. Oh, it still is focused on plowing, both with tractors and horses, but it is becoming more than that. That’s why this year’s Plowing Match, which is being held on Friday, Aug. 27 and Saturday, Aug. 28 in a field adjacent to the Eagleson Road right where Rushmore Road intersects with Eagleson a couple of kilometers south of Fallowfield Road, will be having a trivia challenge, games for youngsters, trolley rides, a BBQ and vendor displays. And you don’t have to be an experienced plowman to get to try your hand at plowing. Sure, on the Saturday, the actual plowing match will be attracting two dozen or more experienced plowmen not only from the city of Ottawa but also from neighbouring counties and areas. But on the Friday, that’s the day to visit the site if you want to try your hand at plowing. It does not matter if you have ever done it before or not. The Ottawa Carleton Plowmen’s Association, sponsors of the Plowing Match, will have tractors and horses and coaches on hand on the Friday. Anyone who would like to give plowing a try, whether ever on a tractor or not, will be able to give it a go. Of course, anyone trying it for the first time should be ready for some challenges. “It is not quite as easy as they think,” says Marsha Gutierrez of the Ottawa Carleton Plowmen’s Association. The inexperienced will even be able to try out plowing on the Saturday, although

only with a tractor. The trolley, which is a covered wagon pulled by a tractor, will be there to transport visitors around the site – out to the plowing, over to the vendors, off to the kids’ activities. There will be some fun activities for youngsters, such as building scarecrows. Everyone visiting the site, on both Friday and Saturday, will be given a trivia questionnaire to answer. The questions will be about agriculture in general, about plowing more specifically and about some of the displays that can be found at the site. Many of the answers will be found just by travelling around the site. Indeed, the trivia contest has been implemented to try to encourage visitors to visit all parts of the Plowing Match site. The activities on Friday, Aug. 27 will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. At noon on Friday there will be the VIP plowing featuring local politicians such as city of Ottawa Rideau-Goulbourn ward councillor Glenn Brooks. There will be a BBQ on site on both Friday and Saturday, featuring local meat and food items. Saturday, Aug. 28 will feature not only the Plowing Match itself but also will see the Queen of the Furrow contest held beginning at 11 a.m. This will feature not only a speech about agriculture but also a demonstration of plowing by each contestant. The winner will represent the Ottawa Carleton Plowmen’s Association at the upcoming International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show. Because this is the 50th anniversary year for the Queen of the Furrow competition, previous Ottawa Carleton Queens have been invited to attend. More than 25

former Queens are expected to be there. Displays at this year’s Plowing Match will include one from the city of Ottawa’s Rural Affairs Department, one from the Ottawa Health Unit, another featuring a craftsman who makes miniature working tractors and another by a maple syrup producer with a display of how sap becomes maple syrup. Other displays may feature businesses who deal in the rural area. “It’s just a little bit of everything,” Ms. Gutierrez says about the displays that will be on site. Saturday, Aug. 28 will see the actual Plowing Match held, with different classes taking place. This will include walking and riding while plowing with horses, plowing with antique tractors and plowing with modern tractors. This year’s site is on the Bert Smith farm in Goulbourn. The crop has been taken off the field in preparation for the Plowing Match. Only a stone’s throw from the site of the 1983 International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show which was held at the then-Garnet Ralph farm on the east side of Eagleson Road, the site this year is easily reached via the Eagleson Road. The Plowing Match was held in the Manotick area last year and will be held in Sarsfield next year as the Ottawa Carleton Plowmen’s Association tries to move the location around to various agricultural areas in the city of Ottawa. “It’s kind of been all over the place,” says Ms. Gutierrez, while noting that the Plowing Match goes ahead rain or shine. But sunshine is being hoped for because, as she comments, there is “nothing worse than plowing in mud.”

IN STITTSVILLE

One happy grandfather JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF One day the grandfather receives a prestigious Lions Club award. On the next day, the granddaughter receives a major award at the Goulbourn Middle School grade eight graduation ceremony. And just a few days later, the bagpipe playing grandson leads the procession of his graduating class at its commencement ceremony. But it does not end there. The grandson, once again playing his bagpipes, leads the dignitaries as they march to the stage at the opening ceremony for Stittsville’s Canada Day celebrations. And later on that very stage, the granddaughter performs as a highland dancer. And watching all of this is the grandfather, a Korean War veteran, riding around and sitting on his motorized scooter, a necessary aide to his mobility as he continues to battle health problems including cancer. But he continues to wear his familiar smile and exhibit his always friendly demeanour.

Yes, indeed – Ivan Warner of Stittsville is enjoying life, not only for himself but also for the accomplishments of his grandchildren, Michaela McConnell and Jordan McConnell. It was at the Stittsville District Lions Club’s last meeting before the Club’s summer break that Ivan, a longtime Lions Club member, was presented with a Helen Keller Fellowship, one of Lionism’s highest awards, given to honour outstanding Lions Club members. It came as a surprise to Ivan who does attend meetings and helps out as much as possible given his health situation. But he says that the award, in his view, represents being respected by his fellow Lions and acknowledged for what a person stands for in terms of his or her life and his or her community. It was only the very next day that Ivan’s granddaughter, Michaela McConnell, received the Kiwanis Citizenship Award at the Goulbourn Middle School grade eight graduJOHN CURRY PHOTO ation ceremony. City of Ottawa Councillor Reports By Shad Qadri, Councillor Ward Six Stittsville City of Ottawa The annual Fall Cleaning the Capital Campaign starts on September 15, 2010. I invite you to get involved to give our city a clean sweep. With your help, Stittsville can be the cleanest ward in the city. Every year, entire communities – including schools, neighbourhood organizations and associations, businesses, families, friends, and individuals take part in the Cleaning the Capital challenge. A record 87,400 participants made Cleaning the Capital 2009 the most successful campaign to date. Let’s build on last year’s success and make 2010 another record year. It’s easy to take part. All you have to do is select a cleanup location where litter or graffiti has accumulated. It can be a park, woodlot, ravine, shoreline, bus stop, pathway, schoolyard or any public property requiring tidying up. Large or small, all cleanup projects are welcome. Once you’ve chosen your cleanup location, you can register online at ottawa.ca/clean or by calling 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401). The campaign runs from September 15 to October 15. Early bird registration began August 15. Register on or before September 14 for your chance to win early-bird prizes. Cleanup Starter Kits for litter pickup and/ or graffiti removal projects are available to all registered volunteers. Litter Pickup Starter Kits include disposable vinyl gloves, garbage bags and leaf-and-yard waste bags. Graffiti Removal Starter Kits include graffiti removal wipes, masks and gloves. All kits come with helpful project and safety information to guide your cleanup project. Upon request, and while quantities last, we will include magnets and stickers in the kits. Together we can help keep Ottawa clean, green, graffiti-free and litter-free. For more

Join the City’s Fall Cleaning the Capital Team information and to register, visit ottawa.ca/ clean or call 3-1-1. Remembering Captain Sterling Howie It is with great sadness that I inform the community with the passing of Captain Sterling Howie, one of Stittsville’s dedicated volunteer firefighters from Station 81. Captain Howie was a volunteer firefighter for over 40 years. During this time, he has been a mentor to new recruits and helping them become better firefighters as well as active members in the community. Not only was Captain Howie an outstanding volunteer firefighter, but he also worked tirelessly for charities and other community initiatives to help improve the quality of life in Stittsville. At this time, I send my deepest condolences to his family. My thoughts and prayers remain with his loved ones during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed. New Adult Crossing Guard for St. Stephen Catholic School students I would like to inform residents that at the beginning of the upcoming school year, a new Adult Crossing Guard will be situated at the intersection of Stittsville Main Street and Bandelier Way for students at St. Stephen Catholic School. Please be aware of and recognize these individuals who are ensuring the safety of children as they travel to school. Once the stop sign is raised and the adult crossing guard has entered the roadway, the motorist must stop. Only after the adult crossing guard has returned safely to the curb, and only after the stop sign has been lowered can motorists proceed through the crossing. Failure to oblige to this is a Highway Traffic Act offence that carries a

$110.00 fine, including three demerit points. Crossing guards are asked by the police to report all violators for appropriate action. If you have any questions about the crossing or the crossing guard operation, please contact Becky Hughes, Supervisor of the Adult Crossing Guard Program at the Ottawa Safety Council at (613) 238-1513. I would like to congratulate the parents who worked hard to make this happen because the safety of our children is our number one priority. City’s Fall and Winter Recreation Guide now available Fall into a recreation program this season, with the release of the Fall and Winter Recreation Guide. The guide can be picked up at neighbourhood recreation facilities, Client Service Centres, public libraries, participating retail outlets or you can see it online at ottawa.ca. Registration for swimming and aqua fitness programs began August 9 for online/touch tone and August 10 during regular business hours for in-person registration. Registration for all other programs started August 11 for online/touch tone and August 12 during regular business hours. For a complete list of where you can pick up your recreation guide, or to view the guide online, please visit the City of Ottawa website at ottawa.ca/recreation. This is a great opportunity to take in the many programs the Goulbourn Recreation Complex has to offer for all ages. Come celebrate Village Fest It’s that time of the year again as the Stittsville Village Association proudly presents its annual Village Fest on Saturday, September 11 at the Village Square Park

at the intersection of Stittsville Main Street and Abbott Street. For years, Village Fest has been integral in bringing the residents of Stittsville together for a full day of fun for the whole family. This year’s event runs from 8 am to 5 pm. In honour of local farmers, this year’s theme is Scarecrows for those individuals who protect the fields. There will also be a contest for the best scarecrow. With the day being the anniversary of the 9/11 events, the day will begin with a short memorial service and prayer for the victims. There will also be loads of entertainment by local bands, dancers and other talent shows as well as games for youngsters. The Soap Box derby will take place all day on Abbott Street East near Village Square Park. It is open for all ages, amateurs and professionals. If you are new to Stittsville or have never participated, I encourage you to see what this annual tradition is all about. Always listening and acting on your concerns As your Councillor, I always welcome your keen input and ideas on how we can sustain and improve Stittsville. Please contact our office anytime by phone at 613-580-2476 or by e-mail at Shad.Qadri@ottawa.ca. My ward office is located in the Goulbourn Recreation Complex, located at 1500 Shea Road. Stittsville News - AUGUST 19, 2010

This award goes to the student who best exemplifies the qualities of good citizenship. In this, she is rather following in her award winning grandfather footsteps. Michaela, who is 14, has been highland dancing since she was four, telling her mother, Bonnie McConnell, that she wanted to dance on swords. She also had been to a highland games with her family and was impressed with the beautiful clothing that the highland dancers wore. “I liked what they wore,” Michaela recalls. However, she did not initially realize how much work would be involved in becoming an accomplished highland dancer. Highland dancing is the most aggressive form of dancing, requiring strong leg muscles as the dancer is always hopping around the sword on the ground. Michaela has advanced in highland dancing, completing examinations as she has progressed and taking part in competitions. In 2006, when she was ten years old, she danced in Scotland, winning medals. She has danced at the Maxville Highland Games as well as at competitions in New York State, Vermont and elsewhere. She has won a prestigious highland dancing scholarship and has attended an elite North American highland dancing workshop. She is quickly reaching the top levels in traditional highland dancing. And why has she continued with her dancing, going on for a decade now. “I just enjoy it. It’s fun to do,” is her simple explanation. Of course, there is more to why she undergoes the two two-hour lessons per week while still keeping up on her school work and still being involved at school where she is in the band. She explains that when she dances at senior citizen homes and sees how happy it makes the seniors there and how they remember her from year to year, that’s part of the reason of why she does it. It brings enjoyment to others. No wonder she won the Kiwanis Citizenship Award at her school – she knows that it is important to be there for others. And then there’s the bagpiper, her 17 year old brother Jordan who is continuing a family tradition that goes back to a bagpiper in the First World War and continued with his uncle Regan Warner. Jordan started bagpiping when he was 13 years old and later hooked up with instructor Bob Smith of the Arnprior McNab Pipes and Drums. He started competing with the band and also in solo competitions. Last year he garnered firsts in Almonte, Syracuse, Kemptville and North Bay along with seconds in Spencerville and Kingston. This all added up to accumulating the most points overall in the year, gaining him recognition as the Eastern Ontario Champion in his competition level. Jordan says that he has no idea why he likes bagpiping. It could be that his uncle Regan plays the bagpipes. It could be that as a youngster, he always went with the family to the highland games in Almonte. It could be his musical inclination as he took piano in his childhood. He likes the idea, though, that bagpiping has universal appeal. “You can use it for anything, basically,” he says, pointing out that there is bagpiping at weddings, funerals, processions, parties, church services and events like

the recent Relay For Life in Stittsville or weekend after weekend travelling together to events where Michaela dances and Stittsville’s Canada Day celebrations. While he plays in competition with the Jordan plays. “It’s a family thing,” says grandmother Arnprior McNab Pipes and Drums, he readily admits that it is easier participat- June Warner. And her daughter Bonnie agrees. ing as a soloist than with the band. When piping with a group, a bagpiper has to be “That’s what this is all about,” she says. aware of what the others are doing in terms of keeping time, tuning and other aspects of bagpiping. But when competing as a soloist, there are none of these concerns – a bagpiper simply does it the way he or she wants to do it. There are no others to worry about. He says that the secret in bagpiping is to blow hard on the instrument but to make it look easy to do. Jordan hopes to continue to progress through the various levels in bagpiping and would like to compete in the world competition in Scotland. Indeed, this goal falls in nicely with the dream of his mother, Bonnie McConnell, which is to see both her daughter Michaela dance and her son Jordan play the bagipipes in Scotland. But in some ways, her dream has already JOHN CURRY PHOTO been accomplished, as the family – chil- Jack Burke, left, president of the Stittsville District Lions Club, dren, parents and presents a Helen Keller Fellowship award to longtime Lion Ivan grandparents – spend Warner, right.

RICHMOND VILLAGE GARDEN & LANDSCAPE CONTEST

Unique garden forms backdrop for prize ceremony JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF It was the perfect backdrop for an event recognizing the winners in the fifth annual Richmond Village Garden & Landscape Contest. It was a garden. But not just any garden but a unique and special perennial flower and vegetable garden created and cared for by the Sunday School children of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. It is a garden filled with a sea of flowers interspersed with vegetables and wild grasses. And then there are the decorative touches – an upside down shovel with its blade in the air, poking out from the garden; a sign identifying the garden, with an artificial bird sitting on it; hand-made garden stones; tin can totem poles; even shoes. Many of these were left over from St. Andrew’s annual eco-bazaar, an event promoting re-use and recycling. The garden’s organic vegetable component demonstrates gardening practices such as companion planting with tomato plants inter-planted with marigolds to mutually benefit each other. The garden, in its second year of existence this year, flourished thanks to the care of a number of youth and adults from the congregation including the mentorship of Jeannette Cross of Richmond’s Harmony Gardens Landscaping Inc. Indeed, the garden was even a stop on this year’s Garden Tour organized by St. John’s Anglican Church as a fundraiser for that church’s Quiet Garden. Plans are to continue with this garden, which extends along part of the south side

of the church hall at the rear of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on McBean Street. Rev. Teresa Charlton of St. Andrew’s hopes that the garden will expand even more in the future as it has, in her view, both an environmental and spiritual value. She also likes the way that the garden and its care engage church members of all ages. This year this garden won second prize in the front yard category of the Richmond Village Garden & Landscape Contest. This

meant receiving a $200 gift certificate donated by Richmond Nursery Inc. This prize was presented, along with all the others, at a ceremony held in front of this garden on Saturday, Aug. 7. Ulrica McKim, the contest coordinator, noted the quality of the 14 entries in this year’s competition. “They were all fabulous,” she said. The 14 properties, from across the village, varied in style, size, maturity and intent but

while diverse, they were all beautiful in their own way. The diversity made the judging enjoyable for the judges who had to compare the different entrants. Judges this year were Calvin and Jeannette Cross of Harmony Gardens Landscaping Inc., Morgan Blenk and Mike Stanton of Richmond Nursery Inc. and Mark Schizkoske who represented the public. Ms. McKim also thanked the sponsors who she noted are indispensable to holding the contest. These sponsors, who donated a total of over $1,000 worth of prizes, are Harmoney Gardens Landscaping Inc., Lalonde’s Richmond Gardens, Richmond Home Hardware Building Centre, Richmond Nursery Inc. and Yards Unlimited Landscaping Inc. The contest is organized by the Richmond Village Association. Judy Wagdin, president of the Richmond Village Association, was in attendance at the prize ceremony, along with immediate past president Bruce Webster and director Don Flanders. In her comments at the ceremony, Ms. Wagdin suggested that a future enhancement for the contest perhaps should be a tour of the winning gardens and yards so that others can learn from their example. Ms. McKim responded that having such a garden tour is a great idea but more volunteers would be needed to coordinate such an undertaking. She also noted that there already is a garden tour in Richmond, albeit not of the contest winners. UNIQUE GARDEN, SEE 13

a garden shed with vine interlacing latticework which shades a sitting area. Robert Anderson of Franktown Road won second prize in the back yard category, winning two cubic yards of top soil/mulch/compost delivered by Harmony Gardens Landscaping Inc. and a $50 gift certificate donated by Lalonde’s Richmond Gardens. His back yard garden features English countryside style gardens with numerous perennials as well as a unique collection of playful gnomes, a cascading waterfall and a pond. At the rear of the yard, accessed by a wooden archway, lies a vegetable garden. Third place in the back yard category was a tie between Ward Powell of Dallaire Crescent and Judy McGillvray of Tarryn Terrace who won first prize in the front yard category. Both received a $100 gift from Richmond Home Hardware. Ward Powell’s back yard features stonework, a waterway, a pool area and a garden that frames a view of the Jock River. Judy McGillvray’s back yard includes bat boxes and bird houses as well as a shade garden, a pond and a flagstone dog run. An honourable mention in the back yard category went to Margaret McKinnon of McBean Street for her country style gardens featuring an abundance of colourful perennials and trees, along with artwork, statues and old farm equipment. “The objective of this contest has always been more than awarding prizes to beautiful gardens,” said Ms. McKim. It is meant to provide an opportunity for the Richmond Village Association to recognize and celebrate community pride as expressed through the time, care and creativity that individuals invest in their properties. “Hopefully it may also inspire other residents and businesses to continue beautifying our village,” she said. To volunteer to help with this contest in the future, please contact Ms. McKim at Ulrica.stoklas@ sympatico.ca or by mail at Richmond Village Association Inc., P.O. Box 4, Richmond, Ontario K0A 2Z0.

She did say that photos of the gardens are on the Richmond Village website at www.richmondvillage. ca, along with the contest results. A more complete photo tour of all of the participating properties will be on display at the Richmond Village Association booth at the Richmond Fair. Such a tour may also be put on-line. Front and back yards were evaluated separately by the judges during the June 19 to June 27 judging period. Scoring was done on the basis of four equally weighted criteria, namely beauty, tidiness, originality and environmental sensitivity. In the front yard category, Judy McGillvray of Tarryn Terrace won the first prize, a $400 gift donated by the Richmond Village Association. This was the second year in a row that Ms. McGillvray has captured first prize in this category. The yard features a stone path embedded in a perfectly kept lawn along with a series of hanging flower baskets suspended from the porch. Second prize in this category went to the Sunday School children of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church for their garden which was right behind them as they received their prize, a $200 gift certificate donated by Richmond Nursery Inc. Third prize in this front yard category went to Elizabeth Morrison of Colonel Murray Street her cottagestyle garden featuring artifacts, a rock retaining wall, a handmade arbour, trellis and wishing well and a sea of colourful annuals and perennials. She received a professional landscaping consultation donated by Yards Unlimited Landscaping Inc. An honourable mention in the front yard category went to Chris and Tracy Edwards of Tarryn Terrace for its impeccable lawn, stonework and colourful planters. In the back yard category, William Frenken of Cockburn Street won the top prize, a $400 gift certificate donated by Richmond Nursery Inc. This was a repeat victory for Mr. Frenken as he also won this category in the 2008 contest. His back yard features both shade and sun gardens, a vegetable plot, an English rose garden, a pond and

Goulbourn Basketball Association hoping for even more teams flourished under the mentorship of John and David Badger. This program provides opportunities for teens to earn some extra money while refereeing Recreational games. The GBA recently held its annual general meeting to wrap up the 2009-2010 season. GBA president David Byck thanked all of the volunteers, players and parents for their

continued support of the Association. There remain a number of openings on the GBA executive for the 2010-2011 season as a few longtime volunteers have stepped down to turn their attention to other endeavours. The GBA is currently holding on-line registration for the upcoming 2010-2011 season at www.gbahornets.com.

Thirty-two Recreational teams. Six Representative teams. That was the team count for the 2009-2010 season for the Goulbourn Basketball Association. And hopes are to field even more teams, both Rec and Rep, for the upcoming 2010-2011 season. The Goulbourn Basketball Association (GBA) continues to roll along. After 21 years, the GBA is continuing to maintain its core fundaments in providing a rewarding experience for players, officials and parents. Last season the GBA had almost 500 youth registered in its programs. This includes the Recreational and Representative basketball programs as well as the successful youth referee program. In the 2009-2010 season, the GBA fielded

32 Recreational teams participating in the West End Basketball League, playing against teams from Kanata, Almonte, Barrhaven and Osgoode. Emphasis in this program continues to be on player and coach development. Under the guidance of the GBA’s technical director John Scobie, the fundamentals of the game are put front and centre. On the Representative side of things, the GBA’s six teams in the 2009-2010 season played in tournaments in Ontario, Quebec and upstate New York. The Major Atom girls team, competing in Division 1, finished tenth in the province. Both the Major Bantam Boys and Girls teams competed in Division 2 and finished in the top 25 in Ontario. The Major Atom Boys team received the Fair Play Award at the 2010 provincial championships last April. The GBA’s referee development program

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The Flames were red hot in recent tournament play. So hot, in fact, that the team, formally known as the West Ottawa Soccer U11 Girls D1 team, captured the gold medals in the recent Gloucester Invitational Soccer Tournament at the Hornets Nest in Gloucester. The team won all five of its games in the tournament, shutting out the opponents in four of the games. The secret of success for the team was ball control and team play, with each of the players contributing. The team is sponsored by Stittsville Main Street Physiotherapy.

Walk-off homer gives playoff victory to 56ers JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF It’s playoff time in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League. And for the Stittsville 56ers, it means a best-of-three opening round playoff series against the Barrhaven Broadway Blues. Stittsville finished in fourth place in the regular season with a record of 11 wins, 9 losses and a tie. The Barrhaven Broadway Blues finished in fifth place but well behind the 56ers with a record of 7 wins, 12 losses and 2 ties. In the regular season, the 56ers had two victories and a tie against Barrhaven. The first game of the playoff series was played at Alexander Grove in Stittsville on Wednesday, Aug. 11 and while the score ended up 8-5 in favour of Stittsville, the game was much closer than that. Indeed, it was a three run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh that was the margin of victory for the 56ers. Stittsville had taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI double by Dan Bradley. Barrhaven, though, came back in the third inning with two runs, taking a 2-1 lead. WALK-OFF, SEE 22

run that gave the 56ers the 8-5 win and a one game lead in the playoff series. Darren Featherstone picked up the win on the mound for the 56ers. Dan Jessiman had a good game, going four for four with 2 RBI’s. Scott Jessiman went two for three, also with 2 RBI’s. The Kars Aces finished in first place in the regular season, just ahead of the Quyon Combat Flyers. In the first round of the playoffs, besides the Stittsville 56ers playing the Barrhaven Broadway Blues, Kars Aces will play North Gower Marlboroughs; Quyon Combat Flyers will face off against Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric; and Carp 14C Victory are playing Ottawa Blitz.

Barrhaven scored another run in the fourth inning and then added another in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. After the 56ers scored a single run in the fifth inning, Barrhaven scored a run in the top of the seventh. Things were looking good, with a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. But that’s when the 56ers rallied. Dan Jessiman’s single drove in one run and then Scott Jessiman followed this with a single that scored two runs, tying the game at 5-5 thanks to a head first slide at home plate by Dan Jessiman, scoring all the way from second base. It was then time for the last inning heroics by Scott Parsons who belted the three run, walk-off home

These two lunch kits are just some of the back-to-school treasures found at Dandelions Consignment Boutique. There is lots of great back-to-school wear on hand now. Among the great items on hand are sandwich cutters which allows a youngster to make animal shapes from a sandwich – great fun which prompts a hearty appetite. The Goodbyn lunch box is another fun option with the advantage of being litterless which many schools are encouraging these days. There are four basic colours to choose from but there is lots of opportunity for creativity because a child can decorate the front with some of the many stickers that come with the lunch box. There are absolutely no plastic bags or separate containers involved, except for a drink bottle that comes with the lunch box. The Goodbyn lunch box seals itself and there is room in it for a sandwich or wrap, a banana, veg-

there is clothing and school supplies to get, don’t forget that most important of things, the school lunch kit. Two sensational lunch boxes are available now at the Dandelions Consignment Boutique on Stittsville Main Street in downtown Stittsville. One is a Balanced Day lunch kit while the other is the Goodbyn lunch box. Many schools are going to the Balanced Day program and the Balanced Day lunch kit helps a parent provide both a snack and lunch for the child. TO PERFORMANCE IN

WINNIPEG

Farmers Market

Off to Switzerland next year SPECIAL TO THE NEWS This year Canada. Next year the world. It was the Canadian Gymnaestrada in Winnipeg this year for a team from the Kanata Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. And thanks to the team’s performance, it will be off to the World Gymnaestrada in Lausanne, Switzerland next year. Team members hail from Stittsville as well as Kanata, Dunrobin and Nepean. Consisting of gymnasts ranging in age from 10 to 23, the team included girls in their first year of advanced training in rhythmic gymnastics as well as girls attending their third Canadian Gymnaestrada. Such diversity meets the aim of such events, featuring participation and inclusion. The team members all practiced an extra four hours a week to prepare for the Gymnaestrada. The Kanata Rhythmic Gymnastics Club had the largest team from Ontario at the event which attracted a total of 800 participants, ranging in age from 10 to 86, from across Canada. The team’s routines ranged from a “Viva” rope routine that was not only well received by the Canadian and international judges at the event but also by the over 2,000 spectators at the Athletic Centre at the University of Manotiba to a routine that told the story of Noah’s Ark using gymnastics skills such as tumbling and lifting to another routine focused on the history of Saskatchewan. The team was not only selected to be part of the Canadian team at the World Gymnaestrada in Switzerland next year but also was honoured by being selected to perform at the closing ceremonies of the Canadian event. Members of the Kanata Rhythmic Gymnastics Club team at the Canadian Gymnaestrada in Winnipeg in July were Mariana Sanchez-Maya, Carina Pham, Emma Smith, Baylianne Rich, Joanna Huang, Sarah Manyoki, Anneliese Reid,

The Stittsville Farmers Market at the Bradley’s Insurance parking lot on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville operates on Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Everyone welcome. Vendors featuring both organic and locally grown produce and food.

GOULBOURN JUBILEE SINGERS

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Singing and having fun. This is what the Goulbourn Jubilee Singers have been doing for years and the coming year will be no different. And you can be part of it all. Indeed, anyone who wants to sing is welcome to join. There are no auditions. The Goulbourn Jubilee Singers are a community choir with members coming from Stittsville, Richmond, Munster, Ashton, Kanata, Carp, Barrhaven and even Bells Corners. The choir will be starting its 2010 fall season with a practice session on Wednesday, Sept. 8 starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Stittsville United Church on Fernbank Road in Stittsville. Once again this year, the Jubilee Singers will be under the directorship of Linda Crawford who is best known as the music teacher

at Goulbourn Middle School. She will be joined again this year by accompanist Doll Creelman. The Jubilee Singers also have an associated youth choir, called the JJ’s. This is a choir for boys and girls aged 8 to 14. The JJ’s practice weekly, with the first practice slated for Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Stittsville United Church. The JJ’s always have a role in the annual concerts held by the Jubilee Singers. The JJ’s also join the adult choir on sing-outs at various seniors residences. The Goulbourn Jubilee Singers hold two annual concerts, one at Christmas time and another in the spring. This year’s Christmas concert, already titled “Christmas Two by Two,” will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4 at the Stittsville United Church.

THANKS

Munster Union Cemetery’s annual memorial service JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Munster United Church in the heart of Munster will be the site for the annual memorial service of the Munster Union Cemetery this Sunday, Aug. 22 at 2:30 p.m. Holding the service inside at the Munster United Church has become the custom in recent years but it was not always such. This annual memorial service can be traced back to 1935 when the first Decoration Day Service was held at the Munster Union Cemetery under the auspices of the Loyal Orange Lodge. No. 917 of Munster. This Decoration Day Service continued for some years but in more recent times, it has been replaced by an annual memorial service held under the auspices of the cemetery’s Board of Trustees in the nearby Munster United Church. Munster Union Cemetery traces its history back to 1886 when Thomas Tubman and his wife, the former Isabella Hill, provided two acres of land as the site for the cemetery. Mr.

Tubman, who was Munster’s first postmaster and also served as a school trustee and Justice of the Peace, believed that the community should have a non-denominational cemetery to meet the needs of those for whom burial in a church cemetery was not preferred or possible. As such, the Munster Union Cemetery Company Incorporated was formed. Munster Union Cemetery Company Incorporated looked after the cemetery from its inception to 1942 when the operation of the cemetery was turned over to a Board of Trustees for one dollar by Mac Tubman. This was the result of a 1940 meeting of plot owners who selected the Board of Trustees to run the cemetery. The original two acre cemetery site has been added to in recent years. In February, 1980, a parcel of land was obtained along the south side of the original cemetery site. In April, 2002, a parcel of land was ob-

tained, extending the cemetery lands west to the Munster road. However, the parcel only went as far north as the access road off Munster Road into the cemetery. This land acquisition was followed by the cemetery getting ownership to the land on the north side of the access road. This was thanks to a donation by Ronald and Patricia Potter which was made in memory of Charles Harry Potter and Irene Marcellus Hobbs, the parents of Ronald Potter. Acquiring all of the land fronting onto Munster Road allowed the Board of Trustees to proceed with a project involving engraved granite fence posts along the frontage, each donated with family ties to the Munster Union Cemetery. The stone gates at the entrance to the access road off Munster Road leading into the Munster Union Cemetery were donated by the Loyal Orange Lodge No. 917 of Munster. Two new limestone posts were erected at the cemetery’s south entrance off the Munster Road in 2009 thanks to the generosity of the late Lloyd Cathcart. A bequest to the cemetery by Mr. Cathcart was used to erect these new limestone posts with Joe Zuccarini of Ashton as the stonemason. The posts were formally dedicated at the cemetery’s annual memorial service in August, 2009. The Munster Orange Lodge also erected in 2002 a structure near the entrance to the

cemetery which houses the bell from S.S. No.5 of Munster. The Orange Lodge was also involved with the cemetery and others in erecting a monument within the cemetery to honour three from the Munster area who died in the First World War. This monument is now the focal point for the annual Remembrance service which is held at the cemetery around Nov. 11. The Richmond Branch 625 of the Royal Canadian Legion has also erected a Memorial Board just outside the main entrance gate to the cemetery. At present, this Memorial Board lists the names and grave locations of 43 military veterans buried at the cemetery. This includes veterans of the First World War and Second World War as well as veterans of the Fenian Raids of the 19th century. The Munster Union Cemetery today is a non-profit organization that is a registered charity. The volunteer Board of Trustees meets regularly to make decisions on behalf of the plot owners. Annual meetings are held to which all plot owners are invited. Joan Bradley currently chairs of Board of Trustees. Others on the Board of Trustees are Wendell Bleeks, David Garland, Lillian Hobbs and Gary Simpson. Linda Preston is the secretary-treasurer while Lloyd Fisher looks after the cemetery’s maintenance.

There will be both matinee and evening performances. An example of some of the special events with which the Jubilee Singers are sometimes involved happened last May when members of the Jubilee Singers participated in the “Kaleid on the Road” choral festival at Dominion-Chalmers Church in Ottawa. This festival featured Rajaton, an a capella sextet from Finland. A full day workshop culminated in an evening concert featuring a massed choir made up of members of seven local community choirs including the Jubilee Singers. The massed choir was joined by Rajaton which means “boundless” in Finnish. Anyone interested in joining the Goulbourn Jubilee Singers this fall should plan to attend the initial practice session on Wednesday, Sept. 8. For more information about the choir or the JJ’s, please call Charlotte at 613825-3357 or Elizabeth at 613-838-6078 or check out the website at www.gjsingers.com.
