WALK AMBASSADOR

Giving back JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF “Star light, star bright. The first star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, Have the wish I wish tonight.” This traditional nursery rhyme, believed to be of late 19th century American origin, associates wishes with stars, a childhood fantasy. But thanks to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, a real star in today’s world, wishes and dreams do come true for seriously ill children and their families. Just ask 13 year old Chloe Carriere of Stittsville. Her dream came true thanks to the Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada and now she is giving back so that others can experience the joy and happiness that a dream fulfilled carries with it. She is not only raising money and planning to participate in the fifth annual Walk for Smiles at Dow’s Lake in Ottawa this coming Saturday, Sept. 25 but she is serving as the Walk Ambassador. In this capacity, Chloe will be officially starting the Walk and will be delivering a speech. In it, she will be telling about the challenges that she has faced, having been born with congenital scoliosis (curvature of the spine),

requiring regular surgeries and hospital visits to have the titanium rods in her back adjusted as she grows. But she will also tell how she considers herself lucky to be alive and enjoying life with her family. Indeed, her whole family – mom Lise, dad Marc and older sister Jani, 15 – will be walking along with Chloe in this year’s event. Lise participated in the Walk two years ago but this will be the first time that the whole family has been able to participate. Previously Chloe’s surgeries in Boston precluded participation in the Walk. Chloe, who is in grade eight at Ecole Franco Ouest, is busy fundraising for the Walk, having set a goal of $2,000. Thanks to donations from friends and family, a bake sale held by her mother which raised over $500 and a bake sale that she is holding at her school, she is confident that she will be exceeding this goal. Anyone who would like to help Chloe’s fundraising efforts can simply go on the Starlight Children’s Foundation website, click on the Ambassador link and make a monetary donation right on line.

GIVING BACK, FROM 1

Chloe had her dream of going to Disney World fulfilled by the Starlight Children’s Foundation in 2006. Her family became aware of the Foundation a year earlier when the ill son of a neighbour had his dream fulfilled. She and her sister Jani had both wanted to go to Disney World since they were young and the trip turned out to be even better than she had ever imagined. “A dream come true,” is how she puts it. Her mother, Lise, readily agrees. “It was very magical,” she says about the trip, noting in particular the look on the girls’ faces as they travelled on the monorail approaching the Disney Magical Kingdom castle. “Just their faces was the most magical moment,” Lise says as she recalls the moment. The dream trip was great no only because it was seven fun filled, magical days but also because it provided a break for Chloe and her family from the daily stress of living with her illness. With congenital scoliosis, pain is a constant companion but she has never let it get her down, knowing that there are worse things in life than what she endures. Chloe also participates in many of the other activities which the Starlight Children’s Foundation organizes for seriously ill children and their families to help them cope with their pain, fear and isolation. These include family activities and entertainment, among other programs. One of the highlights for Chloe was attending a concert by Hedley, the Canadian pop rock band. She and her sister even got to meet the band members. “That was another thing we loved,” she says. It is because Chloe has benefitted so much from her involvement with the Starlight Children’s Foundation that she has eagerly wanted to participate in the Walk for Smiles. She wants other children who are battling serious illnesses to be able to feel the joy that she felt during her trip to Disney World. She wants other children to be able to feel that same elation that she experienced when she saw the Disney castle and to experience having a dream fulfilled. Chloe underwent her first surgery related to her curvature of the spin when she was just three and a half years old. She now vis-

its Boston’s children’s hospital every nine months to have the titanium rods in her back adjusted as she grows. But her situation has not stopped her from enjoying life. She loves to make cards and do scrapbooking and stamping. She loves to play soccer and badminton and go to movies. She would love to play hockey like her sister does but it is one of the sports that she is not allowed to play. The Walk For Smiles is the signature fundraising event for the Starlight Children’s Foundation in Ottawa, with all of the funds raised helping to run the programs offered in the area. The 5km walk was initially started by the families involved in the programs as a way of coming together and giving back to Starlight. The Starlight Children’s Foundation established an Ottawa office presence in 2006 but this was after ten years of volunteer involvement. Over these 14 years in Ottawa, Starlight Children’s Foundation has granted over 206 wishes, delivered 8140 Hospital Happenings kits, hosted over 70 Great Escapes, placed 26 Fun Centres (at CHEO, Roger’s House, Pembroke Regional Hospital, Kingston General Hospital and Quinte Hospital) and built two Starlight Sites in the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. It is estimated that the Starlight Children’s Foundation, through its programs across the area, touches the lives of 13,000 seriously ill children every year. There is a Great Escapes event every month and every year sees five shipments of Hospital Happenings Kits with various themes. Great Escapes are fun filled events provided for Starlight families including picnics, cruises, spa days, movie premieres and sporting events that help families connect with other families and help families spend time together. Hospital Happenings are fun filled parties and entertainers designed to offer hospitalized children comfort, companionship and a break from medical treatment. Fun Centres are mobile entertainment units containing a DVD player and the latest Nintendo game system that roll beside in hospitals to provide fun and distraction for pediatric patients. Starlight Sites are beautifully designed and inviting hospital environments where pediatric patients can relax, play and interact with other children during a hospital stay. Starlight brings together experts from pediatric health care, technology and entertainment to create programs that educate, entertain and inspire seriously ill children. Whether it is finding friends online, learning more about a disease or just spending time together as a family, Starlight’s programs are meant to help children and their families cope with the challenges that they face every day. It is this variety and breath of programs that make the Starlight Children’s Foundation more than just a wish granting organization. With a mission to brighten the lives

of seriously ill children and their families, Starlight Children’s Foundation runs program both in and out of hospitals, all across Canada. Among the Foundation’s major sponsors are Air Canada Kids’ Horizons, Brookfield Properties Corporation, Kelsey’s International Inc., Fenwick Automotive, Toys “r” Us Canada, Universal Music Canada, Barter Network Ltd., Cineplex Entertainment, Colgate-Palmolive Canada Inc., Embassy Suites, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, TD Bank Financial Group, Great Gulf Homes Charitable Foundation and Mackenzie Financial Charitable Foundation. Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada has been working to improve the quality of life for children with chronic and life-threat-

ening illnesses and life altering injuries for more than 20 years.

A longtime friend pointing her in the direction of Flight Lieutenant John Wilburn Garland. A lucky break. Family members sharing their stories about his career which included receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross. A wonderful help. Creating a mural telling his story but as a way of commemorating the courage and sacrifice made by all those from Richmond and area who served in the Second World War. Priceless. This sums up the experience of Richmond artist Karen Xarchos in creating and painting the sixth and latest mural in the Richmond Heritage Mural Gallery on the walls of the Richmond Memorial Community Centre in Richmond. It was Peter S. Taylor, a school chum who is now a writer and editor at large at Maclean’s magazine, who first brought the exploits of Richmond native Flight Lieutenant John Wilburn Garland to her attention when she sought out his advice about how she should approach creating a mural honouring those from Richmond and area who served overseas in the Second World War. Peter, who is knowledgeable about the Second World War, suggested that she investigate Flight Lieutenant Garland, recognized as one of the Aces of World War Two on a website about such flying heroes. Karen acknowledges that it was “a very lucky break” that Peter knew about Flight Lieutenant Garland and his wartime record, feeling that she could easily have overlooked any reference to Richmond had she gone on that website without Peter’s advice. Flight Lieutenant Garland is credited with shooting down four and a half, yes, four and a half enemy aircraft. The requirement to be considered an “ace” was five but nonetheless he was included on the Aces website. Although he only received credit for half an enemy aircraft shot down based on the fact that the plane was on the ground at the time, it was still a courageous incident, as he endured a hail of enemy fire as he swept in to destroy the plane as it sat on the airfield. And while the story of Flight Lieutenant Garland which included not only his wartime aerial heroics leading to a Distinguished Flying Cross but also being shot down, becoming a prisoner of war and making a daring escape seemed to lend itself well to the imagery required for a large 8 foot by 20 foot long mural, this whole situation was enhanced by the fact that Flight Lieutenant Garland’s younger brother Bruce and his wife Joan still lived in the area and graciously shared family

stories and photos with Karen. This all came together and formed the basis for the mural which Karen created under contract with the Richmond Village Association, the organization which has developed the Richmond Heritage Mural Gallery on Karen Xarchos the exterior walls of the Richmond arena. Karen, who has lived in Richmond since 1991, has done murals before, usually in restaurants or in private homes, especially in children’s rooms. For instance, she once did a NASCAR stock car racing track around a whole room. “This particular mural was big,” Karen admits. “It was just a little bigger than usual.” Indeed, because of its size and being painted on panels rather than on solid walls, this mural resulted in Karen getting new studio space in her home. She could not paint the five individual 8 foot by 4 foot panels in her basement because of the ceiling height. As a result, she had to use the family dining room which has nine foot ceilings. Her husband built her wooden stands to hold the large panels. This former dining room is still being used by Karen for her art, even though the mural is now gone and hanging on the side of the arena. She may never return to the basement. When the Richmond Village Association called for proposals for a mural for the Richmond Heritage Mural Gallery, it specified that the event depicted had to fall within the 1930 to 1960 time frame. To Karen, it became apparent that the mural should deal with the Second World War since it affected everyone in the village. She had to find a way to personalize it to the Richmond situation but still to come up with a design that would recognize and honour the efforts of all those from Richmond and area who served overseas, more than 50 in all. What really clinched it for Karen in developing her concept for the mural was that the original Richmond Memorial Community Centre, opened in 1950, was built as a memorial to honour the fallen soldiers of both the First and Second World Wars.

Lucky break, family help lead to Richmond mural

Unveiling of latest mural JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF It was rainy and cold in the growing darkness. Certainly not the conditions hoped for on a mid-September early evening in Richmond. But despite the less than ideal weather conditions, there was an upbeat atmosphere befitting a moment of community significance – the unveiling of the sixth mural of the Richmond Heritage Mural Gallery. And when, following a verbal countdown, David Garland, Bruce Garland and Dorothy Cassidy pulled on the ropes to dislodge the covering tarp to unveil the eight foot by 20 foot mural honouring those from Richmond and Goulbourn who had served overseas in the Second World War, applause cascaded from the crowd of 50 or so. “Awesome,” said Richmond Village Association president Judy Wagdin as she looked up at the mural attached to the west exterior wall of the Richmond Memorial Community Centre. This happened at 7:20 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, opening night of the 2010 Richmond Fair. Most interested onlookers, forming much of the crowd present, were members of the Garland family since the mural, while representing the war experiences of all those who had served overseas in the Second World War, was developed by artist Karen Xarchos of Richmond using the wartime exploits and accomplishments of Flight Lieutenant John Wilburn Garland as its guide. In her remarks just before the unveiling, the artist said that there was no more important event affecting Richmond in the 19301960 time frame than the Second World War which saw 50 men and women from the area

serve overseas. She explained that a challenge in doing this mural was how to tell the story of this World War Two involvement of those from the Richmond area, a challenge that she met by focusing on the story of one of them, Flight Lieutenant John Wilburn Garland. His story and exploits, outlined in the mural, are meant to represent the “dedication and valour” of all those from the area who served as soldiers, sailors or airmen in the war. Ms. Xarchos noted that the original Richmond Memorial Community Centre, forerunner to the current arena, was built to honour the fallen soldiers of both the First and Second World Wars. This makes it an ideal setting for a mural honouring those who were involved in the Second World War. She thanked the Goulbourn Museum and Bruce and Joan Garland for their help in her research about the mural. Those attending the unveiling ceremony, many of whom were huddled under umbrellas, were welcomed by Sarah Farrell, president of the Richmond Agricultural Society. She noted that the unveiling would reveal another in the series of murals on the arena that depict the life and history of Richmond. City of Ottawa Rideau-Goulbourn ward councillor Glenn Brooks, in his remarks before the unveiling, congratulated the Richmond Village Association, which has developed the Richmond Heritage Mural Gallery over the past ten years, for its commitment to the project. Among those at the unveiling was Ted Brown, the former president of the Richmond Village Association, who has worked tirelessly on the mural project.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF No one probably enjoyed the unveiling of the sixth mural at the Richmond Heritage Mural Gallery on the exterior walls of the Richmond Memorial Community Centre on Thursday evening, Sept. 16 more than Ted Brown. After all, there is no one more responsible for the existence of the mural gallery than this past president of the Richmond Village Association who was there when it all began and is still a driving force behind the ongoing project. Ted readily acknowledges that the original idea of murals depicting the history of Richmond was not his but was the brainchild of former Goulbourn township councillor Bob Miller of Richmond who suggested in the late 1990’s as a way of celebrating the upcoming year 2000 millennium. Councillor Miller at the time was laying the groundwork for what would become the Richmond Village Associa-

tion by bringing together representatives of various organizations in Richmond to discuss community concerns. This led not only to the eventual formation of the Richmond Village Association, headed by Mr. Brown, but also to the concept of creating an historic mural. Just how this evolved from one mural into having a series of murals outlining the history of Richmond is unclear. “It just sort of grew from there,” Mr. Brown says about the mural idea and how it evolved into the Richmond Heritage Mural Gallery. And as it evolved, it was Mr. Brown who led the way. “It became my project,” he says about these early days of the mural gallery. He was involved from the outset and carried on as the project developed through the years. TED BROWN, SEE 5

MURAL, FROM 3

Some of the initial funding came thanks to Janet Stavinga who was the Goulbourn township mayor at the time. When she became Goulbourn’s first councillor on the council of the new city of Ottawa in 2001, she managed to continue to have funds directed to the mural project. Mr. Brown says that the original plan was to erect one mural a year until eight – four on each side of the arena – were erected. However, after four murals were erected by 2003, funding challenges interrupted things and it was not until 2006 that the next, fifth mural was erected. It then took four more years before the sixth mural was unveiled on the opening night at this year’s Fair. Now that this has happened, the RVA will begin working on fundraising for the next one. There is room for three more murals on the west side of the arena and the possibility of one more on the east side, meaning that there could be four more murals, giving the Richmond Heritage Mural Gallery ten murals in total. “We’ll keep working on it,” Mr. Brown says. Something that may arise out of the Richmond Heritage Mural Gallery is a series of photos of the murals which would be sold or the creation of a booklet explaining the story behind each mural. These may be done in the future as a fundraising venture Ted Brown for the RVA.

It just all seemed so fitting that the successor to this original arena should have on its exterior a mural honouring Second World War veterans from Richmond. Indeed, the completed mural even features a newspaper clipping of the opening of the original arena. The mural created by Karen which was unveiled on the opening night of the Richmond Fair on Thursday, Sept. 16 has two distinct sections. The top half of the mural is the more visually dramatic, with a number of aircraft flying against a cloud-laden sky. Three of the aircraft are ones that Flight Lieutenant Garland flew in the Second World War. The bottom half of the mural features four monochrome images giving a chronological depiction of the career of Flight Lieutenant Garland from a photo with his father in uniform to one showing him with a plane to a photo when he received his Distinguished Flying Cross. Another image is a replication of a newspaper clipping telling of the opening of the Richmond Memorial Community Centre in 1950, honouring the war dead. The bottom half of the mural also features the emblem of Flight Lieutenant Garland’s air squadron; a depiction of soldiers marching under the Union Jack, Canada’s flag at the time of the war; a Distinguished Flying Cross lying there; and an expanse of white crosses marking wartime graves, remembering those who did not return from the fighting. Thanks to the frames made to hold the five mural panels, Karen was able

to put two or three of the panels together at a time for the painting. She admits that it would have been better had she been able to put all five panels together at one time, especially when doing such things as the widespread clouds. It meant that every time she moved the panels, she had to make sure that any overlapping images on them lined up perfectly. “It just took a little more care,” she explains. Since she did not work on the mural continuously as she initially had several other jobs on the go as well, she cannot say exactly how long it took her to paint the mural. “In total I think it was six to eight weeks,” she says, although this does not include the research and design work related to the mural. In May, Karen stopped doing other work and concentrated on finishing the mural, with everything pretty much finished up by July. The mural is painted on marine mahogany plywood which is a most durable type of plywood and features a smooth surface. Karen applied a primer to the wood before starting to ensure that the paint would adhere properly. She also painted the rear of the panels to prevent any moisture from penetrating the wood from there. The finished mural has been varnished for protection. Galvanized screws were used to assemble and mount the mural. JOHN BRUMMELL PHOTO This latest mural will be joined on the wall by a brief description of the Harley Purcell, left, nearer the top, and Charlotte story behind the mural, explaining the Ross, right, try out the rock climbing tower at this year’s Richmond Fair. various images in the mural.

It’s all up to the audience - spread questions around Last week’s candidates’ meetings – one downtown at Ottawa city hall and another at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata, co-sponsored by Metroland Media and the Kanata Chamber of Commerce – highlighted the dilemma of how to involve numerous candidates and ensure that these candidates get an opportunity to respond to audience questions. What happened is that most of the questions were directed to the two frontrunners in the mayoralty race, incumbent mayor Larry O’Brien and Jim Watson. The other candidates got virtually ignored and indeed former regional chair and Nepean mayor Andy Haydon even walked out of the city hall event as he was getting no opportunity to respond to any questions. At the Kanata event, things were no that much better, although Mr. Haydon did have five questions directed his way. This was two more than Clive Doucet had but still, the vast

majority of the questions were aimed at Larry O’Brien and Jim Watson. All of this has brought about discussions about how such candidate meetings can be tweaked so that they do not become solely Larry/Jim shows but that other candidates present get to answer some questions. In our view, the solution to this lies not in changing the format of such meetings but simply in calling on the good old Canadian sense of fair play and equity. The solution lies simply in the audience members directing the questions to the various candidates at the meeting. We all know, basically, what the views of the front runners are with regard to most issues. These views have been well publicized. But the many other candidates had not had the media exposure and we do not know much about them or their platforms. Why not hear them speak at the candidate

meetings so that we get to know if they are just quacks or are legitimate candidates with some good ideas? Just directing questions at the front runners brings forth the same laundered responses that we all already know will be the answers. It seems to us that it would make for a lot more interesting candidates meeting if some of the lesser known candidates present were asked a number of questions. Let’s hear their responses. Let’s see what they have to say. That, in our view, is how to make these candidate meetings more interesting and more fair. There are no new rules required or format changes demanded. Rather, it just takes a little common sense and fair play being demonstrated by those in the audience – spread the questions around and let’s see where that leads. It’s bound to be a better result than just hearing the two front runners answer virtually every questions with their standard responses.

The sound of bagpipes, the screech of fiddles and the voice of Stompin’ Tom all reached the ears of Richmond Fair parade spectators lining Perth Street in front of the fairgrounds last Saturday, Sept. 18 just before noon. This was thanks to the three bagpipe bands marching in the parade, the fiddlers playing for dancers on the Ottawa Fiddle and Stepdancing Association float and the Richmond Munster Minor Hockey Association float featuring a bevy of young hockey players accompanied by a loudspeaker blaring out hockey music songs like Stompin’ Tom’s iconic “Good Old Hockey Game song. These musical sounds were not the only ones along the parade route, of course. There was the applause for the Richmond Legion colour party which led the parade along its McBean Street/Perth Street route; there was the yells of excitement as youngsters captured some candy from the many in the parade who were handing out the goodies, including a number of politicians (what else is new); there was the chugging of antique tractors; there was the greeting accompanying a cheery wave from someone riding on a float such as Richmond Legion members moving along in vintage war vehicles or a dignitary such as Fair president Sarah Farrell in her horse drawn carriage or Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Norm Sterling, sitting in an open top sports car; and there was the quiet, yet powerful sound of a mighty engine in a John Deere tractor moving along the street. Beyond these sounds were the sights of the Richmond Fair parade 2010. The message festooned Royal LePage Team Realty car and the Dave Bilowus Gale Real Estate vehicle; the pumpkin and green tree featured in the Fallowfield Tree Farm entry; the red antique Massey Harris tractors; the black Keystone Kops paddy wagon of the Tunis Shriners; the light green 1961 Chevrolet Bel Air driven by Chuck Crickett of Richmond; the orange pumpkins and fall-coloured mums on the Harmony Gardens float; the traditional red of North Gower’s vintage fire truck; the bright red coat of the Duke of Richmond among the costumed figures on the Goulbourn Township Historical Society’s float; the yellow and orange balloons floating above the Sonya Kinkade Design float; the green of a giant John Deere tractor with its huge tandem back wheels; and the black and white figure of Sparky the Fire Dog, wearing a firefighters’ protective leggings. This being an election year, the parade had more than its usual share of elected officials and would-be elected officials. But they added their own flair to the parade and you sure couldn’t miss them. Carleton-Mississippi Mills coterminous Conservative politicians, MPP Norm Sterling and MP Gordon O’Connor, rode together, side by side, in a convertible sports car. Blue-shirted Nepean-Carleton MP Pierre Poilievre swarmed over the street on foot with a half dozen helpers, following an identifying banner while handing out candy and greeting the crowd. Behind him was Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod, accompanied by a yellow convertible and also going from side to side along the street, handing out candies. City of Ottawa Rideau-Goulbourn ward councillor Glenn Brooks had his placard carrying vintage blue pickup truck but he and his team moved along the spectators, handing out candy. City of Ottawa mayor Larry O’Brien was at the parade and disappeared into the crowd in front of the fairgrounds, glad handing and greeting the spectators. Rideau-Goulbourn ward candidate Scott Moffatt was in the parade, marching with supporters and engaging the crowd. So too was Rideau-Goulbourn ward candidate Iain McCallum whose yellow-shirted group made their way along the route on in-line roller blades, along with a stretch limousine that bore a sign proclaiming Iain to be a strong

voice for rural Ottawa. And then came Jim Watson, the apparent leader in the city’s mayoralty race to date, with his team of supporters, all following a Watson banner and wearing red t-shirts and mingling with the spectators. Rideau-Goulbourn ward candidate Bruce Webster made his way along the parade route, waving to the crowd as he rode along in a mini-type vehicle. The parade, which had more than 50 individual entries in it, took 34 minutes to go past the Richmond Bakery corner in Richmond. Traffic had been closed off along McBean Street as well as along Perth Street from the Bakery through to Huntley Road. Sunny weather with a blue sky filled with billowy white clouds prevailed for the parade, although it was a little cool. Following the parade, crowds streamed onto the fairgrounds to take in the sights and sounds and enjoyments of the 2010 Richmond Fair.

AT GENDRON ANTIQUES

AND

REPRODUCTIONS

20.4.20 Designer Day Marathon to help Stephanie JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Everyone loves a so-called “winwin” situation. That’s because everyone benefits in some way. And this is just what will be the case at the 20.4.20 Designer Day Marathon, a fundraiser that is being held on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at Gendron Antiques and Reproductions in Stittsville. “It’s a win-win situation,” Line Gendron says in explaining what she says is something that has never before happened in the Ottawa area. Here’s what’s going to happen: Two dozen of the top designers in the Ottawa area, with expertise ranging from draperies to kitchens to baths to paint and wallpaper to interior design, will be on hand and available for consultations in 20 minute time blocks - $20 per block. All the consultations will be by appointment. Where else will a person wanting advice on home decorating or improvement be able to see one or more of the area’s top designers assembled under one roof and for such a reasonable price. Those interested can sign up for more than one 20 minute time block. Indeed, sign up for three consecutive ones with the same designer and you have a whole

hour with a top notch designer. You will never get an hour of time with a designer at such a low price, as many charge up to $200 an hour for such consultations. Those with appointments are being urged to bring along photos, fabric, samples and room drawings, dimensions and layouts to help in getting the right advice. Load up your laptop computer with photos of the room or rooms that you want to change and take it along to the appointment. You will get professional advice on colour and fabric choices, kitchen and bathroom design, home design, spatial planning, layouts, renovations and retrofits and fall and winter home décor. So, it’s a great deal for anyone wanting advice on home decorating or improvement. A real winning situation. But this 20.4.20 Designer Day Marathon is first and foremost being organized to raise funds to help out 25 year old Stephanie Lanctot, an Ottawa University graduate who started a teaching career last fall but was shortly thereafter diagnosed with cervical cancer. She had to seek treatments outside of Ottawa but because of her short teaching career, she was not covered by benefits. Many of the costs associated with her treatment are

not covered by OHIP including travel to and from Ottawa to Toronto and staying in Toronto. She must now travel to New York City for alternative treatments, another costly venture. She is unable to return to work due to her chemo treatments and the exhaustion which is caused by them. All of the funds raised at this 20.4.20 Designer Day Marathon will be going to help Stephanie Lanctot who is a friend of Line Gendron’s daughter. In addition, there will be a bake table at Gendron Antiques and Reproductions that day, raising more funds. Little Cakes is donating cupcakes for additional fundraising. In addition, teal coloured bracelets are now available at Gendron’s, selling for five dollars each, again with all of the funds going to help Stephanie Lanctot. The designers will be available on Wednesday, Oct. 20 in three different time periods: 10 a.m. to noon, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Up to 12 designers will be available at each time period, making for over 200 appointments at 20 minutes each available during the day. There is also another way in which funds are being generated by this fundraiser. HomeStars.

Stephanie Lanctot

com, a new review service on the internet which is now covering the Ottawa area, has agreed to provide $10 to this fundraising effort for every review that is received on their site from now through to the end of October. All of the participating designers came eagerly on board for this fundraiser and are donating their time for the event. “We did not have to beg them at all,” Line Gendron says, noting that many of them deal with Gendron Antiques and Reproductions for their customers and are thus familiar with Line and Mark Gendron and their staff. She says that all of the designers wanted to help out Stephanie Lanctot and help fight cervical cancer. “Everyone was really, really

willing to help,” Line says, noting that cervical cancer affects many women. “Get the vaccine!” has become the slogan for the event, urging women and girls to get the vaccination that will prevent cervical cancer. Among those who have come on board to help with the event is Penny Southam of Southam Design who will be starring in a new show “All For Nothing” which will be on the W Network this fall. Other designers who will be at this 20.4.20 Designer Day fundraiser will include Badr Gebara of Blu Dot Interiors, Sharon Monson of Cottages-at-Turtlehill, Mandalyn Goodall of Custom Home Interiors, Natasha Canniff of Elite Draperies, Ellen Lee of Ellen Lee Design, Tanya Phillips of Urban Décor Ottawa, Catherine Pulcine of CPI Interiors, Janise Saikaley of Uproar Paint and Paper, Denise Salter, Stephanie Sparrow of Interiors by Stephanie, Cyndie Carruthers of Westend Bath and Kitchen, Amy Carter of Custom Home Interiors, Val Adliff of Elite Draperies, Sarah Kidder of Sarah Kidder Design, Luc Crawford of Luc Crawford Design Planning, Shiva Gupta of Shiva Interiors, MARATHON, SEE 9

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The LCBO is a popular spot, no doubt about it, even in normal circumstances. But when the LCBO opens up a new, expanded outlet, watch out. That is what happened in Stittsville on Tuesday, Sept. 14 when the new LCBO store at the Jackson Trails Centre plaza held its gala official opening. Slated to open at 10 a.m., the doors opened up several minutes early as customers kept flocking to the store. Many were there to make sure that they received one of the 150 free enviro-tote bags that were being given out to the first customers. But many also just wanted to see the spacious new store and its offerings. This new store replaces the LCBO store at Crossing Bridge Square which closed up at 6 p.m. the day before. The new store is more than two and a half times larger than the previous premises. Those who were there had the opportunity to have a sip of champagne or that other “champagne” of note – Tim Hortons coffee. There was an official opening ceremony held. Among

the dignitaries attending were LCBO regional director Paul Mancini and LCBO acting district manager Sonia Dilawri. Norma Lamont, vicepresident, community development for the CHEO Foundation was there, along with Kevin Keohane of the Foundation. The LCBO has had a 16 year partnership with the CHEO Founda-

tion. At the latest CHEO telethon, the LCBO turned over a donation of $150,000, raised thanks to its customers donating an extra $2 per purchase. Highlighting the official opening was a toast to the new store with a bottle of Ontario sparkling wine. Taking part in this toast were Mr. Mancini, Ms. Lamont, Mr. Keohane and store manager Nancy Buch.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Kayaker Adam Chappell of Stittsville is used to rushing down raging rivers and over tumbling waterfalls. Now he is also rushing up Canada’s standings for white water kayakers. Although only in his third summer of white water kayaking, Adam, who is 17, has secured a place as an alternate on the Canadian’s men’s national team thanks to placing eighth in the men’s competition of the national team trials in Alberta this summer. He also placed second in the youth category at a World Cup event in Germany and finished off his season with a second place in the Pan-National Event in Renfrew. It was an exciting summer for Adam this year, with travel and competition as he satisfies his passion for white water kayaking

and his quest for kayak glory. This extreme sport sees Adam, as a white water kayaker, find himself in the middle of raging rivers, tumbling over waterfalls and riding swirling currents. All of this tosses these small boats, typically under six feet long, under, over and upside down in turbulent rapids. Adam only acquired his first white water boat two years ago and has advanced quickly to elite status thanks to constant practice and study of the sport. His kayaking encompasses almost year round paddling. On occasion, he has returned home from paddling with two inches of ice molded to his life jacket and helmet. And kayaking has its challenges. Adam had on occasion shattered half his helmet on underwater rocks and has gone over 30 foot waterfalls. Adam’s love for kayaking began in Scouts

in Stittsville where he learned to appreciate the freedom and maneuverability of a small ten foot recreational craft which he received for Christmas one year. He eventually graduated to a 14 foot lake kayak, purchased with his own money. He learned to handle it in the lakes and rivers of national parks and once even completed 44 kilometers of paddling in one day. Among his budding talents was the learned ability to roll his kayak underwater and back up again, with or without a paddle. Adam

would startle younger Scouts by turning turkle with no warning and even remaining upside down under water for up to half a minute before suddenly rolling back up to the surface. Adam’s love of kayaking grew even more when he saw Scouts learning to paddle in rapids in small white water boats. He had already proven himself proficient in white water canoes but he was enthralled with the antics that were possible to achieve in small, light kayaks.

Combining fitness with martial arts training as hockey and ball. In this effort to bring mixed martial arts conditioning techniques into the main stream of fitness, coach Kearns has a certification program for martial arts schools like Therien Martial Arts & Fitness. This will result in certified trainers who will follow the Kearns philosophy. Much of the Kearns system is based on the belief that the mind and body are tied together. If you feel better physically, you will feel better mentally and vice-versa, coach Kearns says. “Don’t believe everything you think,” he says, trying to dispel such common misconceptions that it takes a long time to get in shape or that a person is too old for such an attempt. “With a little effort and a little education, you can go a long way,” he says. As one who has served as a strength and conditioning coach for professional mixed martial arts fighters, coach Kearns appreciates their fitness level but he also acknowledges that this enthusiasm for mixed martial arts can be used to help average people adopt a fitness regimen. He points out that football

players may be in great shape but they are covered up with lots of equipment, hiding their physiques. But with the mixed martial arts craze that is now popular, people see two fighters with their shirts off and they see how much in shape they are. This inspires people to get in shape themselves and leads them to a fitness program. One that includes mixed martial arts conditioning techniques becomes the program of choice in this case, not only because of its mixed martial arts connection but also because it is, in the words of coach Kearns, “fun and interesting,” being interactive and diverse and even including the use of yoga. But the introduction of mixed martial arts conditioning to fitness programs should be done by those trained to bring the two together and this is why coach Kearns has his certification program for trainers. “It’s an easy carry over if you know what you are doing,” he says, with injuries avoided as a result. Coach Kearns, who is the strength, conditioning and wellness coach for the Martial Arts University Interna-

tional, an association of the top martial arts schools in the United States, travels extensively, hosting sessions like the ones that he will be leading at Therien Martial Arts & Fitness in Stittsville this coming Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. However, this will be the first time that the Boston-based martial arts master will be in the Ottawa area. Saturday, Sept. 25 will be an open house at Therien Martial Arts & Fitness where everyone is invited to see coach Kearns teach members and see his techniques in action. It will also provide an opportunity for everyone to see how the children’s programs at Therien Martial Arts & Fitness work. These programs help children learn life lessons like mental discipline, respect, self-defence, fitness and self confidence. There is also even a free transportation service provide from local schools to the Therien facility. In addition, those who attend can also pick up a free membership for a month. More about coach Kearns can be found at his website www.burnwithkearns.net or by calling his 24 hour phone line at 1-508-541-3281.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Burn with Kearns. This rhythmic slogan being made famous by renowned strength and conditioning coach Kevin Kearns will be more than just words this Saturday, Sept. 25 at Therien Martial Arts & Fitness in Stittsville. It will be reality as Kevin Kearns himself will be at the Cedarow Court facility to teach and demonstrate his approach to fitness combined with martial arts training. As for the slogan itself, it can be taken to mean burning off calories or fat but more importantly, at least to coach Kearns, it refers to that “burning inspiration” which he hopes his program will instill in people so that they are not only enthusiastic about the program but also are so enthused by it that they avidly tell others about it. And so what is so inspiring about the Kearns approach to fitness and conditioning? “The idea behind it is to bring fitness elements into the martial arts schools,” he says, so that martial arts programs become centres not only for martial arts training but also for fitness and even team conditioning for sports as varied

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF It was probably a first in the long history of the Richmond Fair. Not the ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday evening, Sept. 16 in the Richmond arena hall that marked the official opening of the 2010 Fair. This is an annual tradition. But it was without a doubt the first time that a knife was used to cut the ribbon. Yes, that’s right – a knife. When longtime Richmond Agricultural Society treasurer Vivian Daly went to cut the ribbon, there was no pair of scissors available to cut it in the traditional way. There was a knife available and so that is what was used, with Vivian slicing through the ribbon, marking the official opening of the Fair. Vivian Daly had the honour of officially opening this year’s Fair after she herself was honoured by the Richmond Agricultural Soci-

ety for her 40 years of involvement with the Society and the Fair. She was not the only one honoured at this opening event for the 2010 Richmond Fair. Don and Marg Sadler were presented with an Agricultural Service Diploma recognizing their years of volunteer service to the Richmond Agricultural Society and the Richmond Fair. Things were not looking good for this year’s Fair on the Thursday evening, as it was rainy with a cold wind – just downright miserable. There were a few brave souls who visited the midway for toonie night but it was far from ideal conditions. But this turned out to be the only bad weather experienced by this year’s Fair. Friday, Saturday and Sunday were all sunny and warm days, ideal for Fair going. And the good weather ensured that the 2010 Fair was another great success. School children from a variety of schools – Jockvale Elementary School, F.J. McDonald Catholic School, Munster Elementary School, among others

– were all around the grounds on Friday, visiting the Agricultural Awareness area, the barns, the show rings, the midway, the exhibit halls. Friday night’s demolition derby was once again a huge draw, followed by a bustling Saturday on the grounds thanks to a spectacular parade and a busy agenda of events

and attractions. The lumberjack show in the antique machinery area proved to be a great hit this year, attracting great crowds as the chain saws roared and the axes chopped. This was the story throughout the grounds – lots of people watching the livestock shows such as the heavy horse show, the light horse show and the western show.

The midway attracted riders galore while the meals in the dining hall, served this year by the folks from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Richmond, proved very popular. An ecumenical church service on Sunday morning which featured a rural-themed presentation based on a parable was well attended.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Art can be found hanging on the walls in many homes. It is part of the home’s décor. So it only makes sense that art should be front and centre where home décor is being considered. Artists Ana Maria Rutenberg of Stittsville, who paints under the name “Nena”, and Donna Wiegand of Kanata, whose art goes under the name “Danuta,” both believe that a piece of original art is an important element in home décor. In their

view, artwork enhances any room and serves to life the spirit of the viewer. Based on this belief, Ana Maria and Donna have decided to take their world of art to where home décor reigns and that is the upcoming Home & Design Show at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa where the latest trends in home décor will be on display. This show will have the “Art by Nena-Danuta” display at booth #423 in the Exhibition Hall where visitors will be able to view the original and unique art

created by Ana Maria (Nena) and Donna (Danuta) and consider it as a way of complementing the décor of the home. The Home & Design Show is running at Lansdowne Park from Friday, Oct. 1 to Sunday, Oct. 3. This new “Art by NenaDanuta” venture involves two awardwinning artists who are combining their talents to introduce their original art to the home décor world. Together, they have more than 25 years of experience creating art in various mediums.

the Royals a short-lived 4-3 lead but Athens came back to tie up the game, sending it into overtime. It took only 29 seconds of overtime play for Athens to score, handing the Royals a 5-4 overtime defeat. The Royals, though, picked up a point in the standings for their effort in the game. The Royals’ second game in the showcase was against Casselman. The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the first period thanks to a goal by Brendan Cruz. Pat Morin of the Royals scored a power play goal in the second period but when the period ended, it was 2-2 on the scoreboard. The Casselman Vikings scored the only goal of the third period to eke out a 3-2 victory. The Stittsville Royals play the visiting Arnprior Packers this Sunday, Sept. 26 at 2:30 p.m. at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League weekend showcase at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata did not pan out so well for the Stittsville Royals. The fact that the Royals had to play two of the strongest teams in the league’s other conference had something to do with this. All that the Royals could manage was one point out of a possible four. In the Royals first came at the showcase event, goals by Brendan Cruz, Mike Byrne and Brad Mason saw the Royals jumped out into a 3-0 first period lead against the Athens squad. But penalty trouble in the second period let Athens back into the game and the game was tied 3-3 going into the third period. Matt Kadolph scored a power play goal for the Royals in the third period to give

It was made in honour of West Ottawa Soccer player Amy Zeglinski-Spinney, a real hero for West Ottawa Soccer for the bravery and spirited attitude which she is showing as she battles cancer. Amy was innocently running down the field in a U12 girls’ game when her femur snapped, causing her to tumble to the ground. Subsequent testing at CHEO revealed that Amy was suffering from Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that is the same kind as Terry Fox had. As a result of the cancer, Amy could not have her leg repaired until after undergoing her cancer treatment. As a result, she has been living with a broken leg as she is treated for her cancer. But despite this and despite having to battle cancer, Amy has retained her spirit. She recently was able to attend a game to cheer for her team and she was all smiles as the team got the victory.
