Chloe Carriere shines at walk JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF In both word and action, Chloe Carriere of Stittsville was a star at the Starlight Children’s Foundation’s annual Walk for Smiles in Ottawa.

As Walk Ambassador at the event on Saturday, Sept. 25, she delivered a speech at the event in which she praised the Starlight Children’s Foundation for its work “to keep us sick kids going.” CHLOE, SEE 2

She said that all of the activities planned by the Starlight Children’s Foundation are anticipated by the children helped. “They get our mind off of what illness we have,” she said about the Foundation and its activities. Chloe also pointed out that the Foundation’s activities also provide an opportunity for parents to interact with others who are going through the same things that they are. She also reminded everyone that by helping to raise funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, a child’s life can be impacted. “Every person in this world can change a child’s life,” she said. Not only did Chloe’s words epitomize the spirit around the Walk for Smiles but her actions also made a big difference. She herself raised $3,000, more money than any other individual participating in the walk. She ended up winning the top fundraising prize, an all inclusive trip to the Mayan Riviera. All in all, the Walk for Smiles, held at Dow’s Lake in Ottawa, raised over $10,000 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Chloe Carriere, who is 13 years old, was born with congenital scoliosis (curvature of the spine), requiring regular surgeries and hospital visits to have the titanium rods in her back adjusted as she grows. Her own dream of going to Disney World in Florida came true thanks to the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Her involved with the Walk for Smiles and serving as the Walk Ambassador is her way of giving back to the Foundation so that other seriously ill children and their families can experience the joy and happiness that a dream fulfilled carries with it.

This had been helped the night before when donations and proceeds from a Chinese auction held at the Lions charter night dinner at the Lions Hall in Stittsville were turned over to the White Cane campaign, totaling more than $250. Since 1917, Lions Clubs around the world have assisted the blind with a strong commitment to sight preservation. The Stittsville District Lions Club took up this challenge when it was formed in 1964 and for the past 46 years have worked on various sight initiatives, including sight awareness and preservation. The emphasis by the Lions during the month of October is “Sharing the Vision,” which is a Lions global campaign focusing on the importance of healthy vision. The Stittsville District Lions Club will be continuing their fundraising for the blind and sight challenged on Saturday, Oct. 23 when the Club will host a euchre tournament at the Lions Hall in Stittsville, with all proceeds going to the White Cane campaign.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

JOHN CURRY PHOTO

Mary Pitt, centre, of the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation receives a giant cheque for $10,000, representing the final annual installment of a five year, $50,000 commitment made by the Stittsville District Lions Club to the hospital, with Ken Jones, left, president of the Stittsville District Lions Club, and Lions Club member Don Zogalo, right, making the presentation.

Lions give final installment JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The Stittsville District Lions Club has finished what it began five years ago – donating $10,000 per year to the Queensway Carleton Hospital. The fifth and final installment in this $50,000 contribution was handed over at the Lions’ 46th charter anniversary night last Friday, Oct. 1 at the Lions Hall in Stittsville. On hand to receive the giant cheque representing this final

$10,000 of thedonation was Mary Pitt, a former mayor of Nepean who now sits on the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation Board. “Thank you all for your generosity,” she said. “It’s much appreciated.” She noted that the Stittsville District Lions Club’s generosity has been acknowledged by the hospital in several ways, including being included on the Donor Appreciation Wall, recognition in an examination room in the hospital’s emer-

gency department and naming of a patient care room in the hospital’s new cancer clinic. Ms. Pitt said that the Queensway Carleton Hospital will soon begin construction of a new wing and renovations that will result in, among other things, ten new operating rooms, a diagnostic centre, 34 new beds and a new satellite dialysis clinic. Over the years, the Stittsville District Lions Club has donated more than $135,000 to the Queensway Carleton Hospital.

One of Stittsville’s gems got polished up a little last week. In-stream clean up work was completed on Poole Creek behind Beechfern Drive and Hesse Crescent on private property owned by Phil Harris and other lands owned by the municipality. Poole Creek is considered one of the Stittsville area’s gem, as it is one of the few cold/cool watercourses within the jurisdiction of the city. A tributary of the Carp River, it flows through Stittsville with much of it lined by a public walkway that attracts many. In the clean up last week, Mississippi Valley Conservation and Ottawa Stewardship Council staff worked together to clear natural debris and garbage that was hindering the flow of the creek east of Stittsville Main Street. Mississippi Valley Conservation and the Ottawa Stewardship Council have been working with private landowners and the city of Ottawa with the support of Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri and the Stittsville Village Association to clean up sections of Poole Creek clogged with debris and garbage. This helps maintain Poole Creek as a healthy waterway. The clearing of the creek allows fish to travel more easily along the channel. The removal of garbage improves water quality and enhances the aesthetic value of the creek. This latest in-stream clean up work was completed before Friday, Oct. 1 so that it would not impact any trout spawning.

“Poole Creek is not only a scenic walking path through Stittsville but it is a rare cold/cool water creek that needs to be kept healthy,” said Mississippi Valley Conservation board member Phil Sweetnam, a Stittsville businessman. He notes that partnerships involving Mississippi Valley Conservation, the Ottawa Stewardship Council, the community and private landowners are key in keeping Poole Creek as a clean and healthy watercourse. Members of the public are invited to get involved in a Poole Creek shoreline rehabilitation project on Thursday, Oct. 14. Volunteers are needed to plant trees in a sparsely vegetated section of the creek adjacent to the walkway. These new trees will eventually provide bank erosion control and help create habitat conducive to aquatic life in the creek. Anyone interested in volunteering at this tree planting should call Brian Anderson at Mississippi Valley Conservation at 613-259-2421, ext. 228. This tree planting event is being hosted by Mississippi Valley Conservation and the Ottawa Stewardship Council in partnership with Evergreen Canada and staff from local Walmart stores. In recent years, interpretive signage has been installed along the Poole Creek walkway. In-stream work done has included installation of rock weirs and lunker boxes. The rock weirs create flows that oxygenate the water, providing a better habitat for trout and other cold/cool water species. Lunker boxes are underwater shelters for fish, providng them a place to escape from predators and to spawn.

People have to start leading the way on waste disposal Congratulations are in order for the Carleton Landowners Association which hosted a public information meeting on waste to energy technologies last week. Presenters told about the technology involved with their particular waste to energy technology. This included the Plasco Energy technology now on demonstration at the Trail Road landfill site as well as two other incinerator technologies and Waste Management’s landfill gas to energy system which is now operational at the Carp Road landfill site. It was a most informative meeting and the Carleton Landowners Association is to be commended on its initiative in hosting this meeting. It is good to see that the Carleton Landowners Association is moving away from being just a protest group and is now starting to be a contributing organization to the political scene in the city of Ottawa. The views of former Brampton mayor Peter Robertson were most refreshing and most provocative. It left you wondering just why Ontario and Canadian municipalities and governments are so far behind Europe, in particular, in how waste is handled. In Europe, all waste must be thermally treated i.e. burned before it can be landfilled. This means that only the smallest of residue ends up in landfill.

STITTSVILLE

Europe also has numerous (in the hundreds) incinerators which create not only electricity but also steam which is used to heat factories or apartments. It was pointed out at the meeting that incinerator technology has improved over the past 50 years so that it is no longer a smoke stack belching out unpleasant, unhealthy emissions. Now emissions are safe and environment friendly. Indeed, even in Ontario, where an incinerator has operated in Brampton for 17 years, the quality of the emissions coming from the plant is better than the quality of the air surrounding the plant. And yet landfilling remains the chief means of disposing of our garbage in Ontario society. We even truck it to the United States, causing air degrading emissions from the trucks, to landfill before moving to incinerator technologies and handling our own garbage here at home. A municipal election is on here in Ottawa as elsewhere in the province. And how much prominence is waste disposal getting in Ottawa? Like just about zero. Sure, candidates come out with a view about the proposed Carp Road landfill expansion but there seems to be political and, indeed, people inertia about putting pressure on the provincial government

to start encouraging waste to energy solutions to the province’s waste disposal situation. There is a provincial election coming up in less than a year. HST, eco fees, the rising cost of hydro and even the health tax will all undoubtedly be topics for debate in this campaign. But will waste disposal and incineration even be on the radar screen, although it could be a viable answer to providing electricity to Ontario society/ You had to come away from the Carleton Landowners Association meeting thinking that there are viable and tested ways of handling garbage other than burying it in the ground, even in a modern landfill which can handle odour, leachate and gas problems much better than older landfills which were just basically holes in the ground. And yet we hear nothing much from our political candidates with the possible exception of Stittsville ward incumbent councillor Shad Qadri on adopting new ways to handle waste in our society. It all boils down to the fact that people have to start making it an issue. Political leaders, at the municipal, provincial and federal levels, will start to get on board when people show them the way. That’s what has to start happening.

MEETING

Hear the candidates

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS A candidates’ meeting is coming up in Stittsville. The Stittsville Village Association (SVA) will be hosting this candidates’ meeting which will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 12 starting at 7 p.m. in the hall at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at the corner of Stittsville Main Street and Mulkins Street in Stittsville. Both candidates for the position of Ottawa city councillor for Stittsville ward six as well as all trustee candidates for the four school boards representing Stittsville ward six are being invited to the meeting. This will include the trustee candidates or acclaimed candidates for the Ottawa Catholic School Board, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, the Conseil des ecoles catholiques du Centre-Est and the Conseil des ecoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario. Mayoralty candidates will not be invited since there already has been a meeting involving them, hosted by the Kanata Chamber of Commerce in Kanata and meant to attract interest from the Kanata, West Carleton and Stittsville/Goulbourn areas. The first part of this candidates’ meeting will deal with school board candidates while the second part will involve the councillor candidates. Each candidate will have an opportunity to outline his or her platform. There will then be an opportunity for those present to direct questions to the candidate or candidates. At the end of the question period, the candidate or candidates will be able to provide closing remarks. This candidates’ meeting will not be a debate between candidates. Rather, it will provide the candidates with an opportunity to present their platforms and also will provide an opportunity for residents to ask questions of the candidates.

YOUNGSTER INVOLVED

Stittsville News - OCTOBER 07, 2010

RICHMOND

Dreams come true at Disney World NEVIL HUNT NEWS STAFF A Richmond youngster was among those visiting Disney World in Florida for the first time ever thanks to Dreams Take Flight. This is an initiative by those associated with Air Canada to provide the trip of a lifetime for physically, mentally or socially challenged children in the form of a day trip to Disney World in Florida or Disneyland in California. On Sunday, Sept. 26, Jordan Smits of Richmond joined over 240 children and volunteers in boarding an Air Canada Boeing 767 in Ottawa for the trip to Disney World. On the flight south, those aboard enjoyed a breakfast which included ice cream. At Disney World, the youngsters received special passes which meant that they did not have to wait in the long lineups at the rides and attractions. These included the Magic Carpets of Aladdin at the Magic Kingdom, the Splash Mountain ride and the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. These Dreams Take Flight trips all began in Canada in 1989 when a group of Air Canada employees began organizing these day trips for physically, mentally or socially challenged children. Since then, over 8,000 children have had the chance to experience the dream of a lifetime with these day trips to Disney World or Disneyland. There are now chapters of Dreams Take Flight across Canada, with flights going from Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Ottawa. The flights began from Ottawa in 1995, meaning that this year marks the 15th anniversary of such flights from the nation’s capital. In these 15 years, about 1700 children have experienced a Dreams Take Flight trip from Ottawa.

Dreams Take Flight is not an official Air Canada venture. The planning, organizing and fundraising is done by Air Canada active employees, retirees, their families and friends and major sponsors on their own time and on a volunteer basis. The flights themselves are staffed by pilots and flight attendants who volunteer to help make the children’s dreams into reality. Dreams Take Flight gives children a chance to forget about doctors, nurses, illness and other disruptions in their lives for one day. In many cases, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and thanks to Dreams Take Flight, youngsters get the opportunity to meet Mickey Mouse in person. Anyone interested can donate air miles to help with future trips. This can be done through the website www.dreamstakeflight. ca. Kanata/Stittsville - 44 Iber Rd. @ Hazeldean Rd.

GRANITE RIDGE

SUBDIVISION

Community Fun Day SPECIAL TO THE NEWS There is no better way to get people out than offer fun. And so, it is not surprising that thanks to sunny weather and good planning, the Granite Ridge Community Association saw more than 200 people – young and adult – turn out for a Community Fun Day at Slate Park in the Granite Ridge subdivision in Stittsville on Saturday, Sept. 18. This was the first such Community Fun Day held after a three year hiatus as the Community Association begins to re-energize itself, particularly by reaching out to new families which have moved into the Granite Ridge area over the past few years. And the Community Fun Day more than lived up to its name as fun was the operative word for the day. There was a giant slide, a bouncy castle and face painting, all favourites of the younger set. The Stittsville firefighters of the Ottawa Police Service were there and everyone, young and older, loves a fire truck. There was a BBQ featuring burgers and dogs as well as snow cones and cotton candy. There’s nothing better to eat at a community event in the sunshine, surrounded by friends and neighbours. Volunteers from Neighbourhood Watch and the Ottawa Police Ser-

vice were on hand to provide information about Neighbourhood Watch and to do some fingerprinting, a hit with the youngsters. The Granite Ridge Community Association wishes to thank Dean and Suzanne Stresman who provided corporate sponsorship of the event through donations of food from M&M Meat Shops in Pembroke and free oil changes from Oil Changers in Kanata. The Granite Ridge Community Association has achieved much in the past including Neighbourhood Slow Down Projects, safety signage for pathways, community participation in “Spring Cleaning the Capital” and advocacy and input on matters such as bus service and development applications in the community. Recently the Granite Ridge Community Association helped out the family whose home was destroyed by fire on Canada Day with gift cards, helping the family meet its immediate needs. The Granite Ridge Community Association will be holding its annual general meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at the Granite Ridge long term care facility on Abbott Street. All residents of the Granite Ridge community are invited to attend this meeting to have input about the future of the Granite Ridge Community Association.

eliminate the need for any landfills. He acknowledges that his stand wanting rules forcing everyone to recycle may not prove popular with everyone but he is willing to take the flack to protect the environment. “I am going to be looked at as the bad guy,” he says, adding that he will probably be badgered a lot over such a stance. “That’s okay,” he says. “That’s the price of winning.” He believes that all packaging should be returned to the store where the item was purchased, with the consumer being paid for returning the packaging or getting a deposit returned. This not only will ensure recycling of the packaging but it will eliminate any extra trucking associated with the returned packaging since trucks which have delivered goods to the store could fill up with the returned packaging instead of leaving the store empty. He also wants to see a levy placed on plastic shopping bags throughout the city. This will encourage their reuse. In addition, he feels it would reduce litter around the city. “It’s too easy to get blown in the wind,” he says about plastic shopping bags, lamenting that creating such plastic bags is a wasteful way of using petroleum. Mr. Eveleigh believes that increased recycling would enable the blue box program to be phased out. This would eliminate running trucks down streets picking up the blue boxes. Storm water management forms a major plank in Mr. Eveleigh’s platform. His ideal is to have no rain water flowing directly into the storm or sanitary sewer systems. Rather, he wants rain water captured and use to flush toilets and for green uses such as car washing. This would mean that every home would have to have a storage tank in which to store captured rain water for these uses. He foresees a day when roads and public buildings will have storage tanks to capture rainwater which is then used for cleaning the streets or watering nearby trees. The goal of all of this is to prevent as much water as possible from infiltrating the sewer system. This will mean that the sewage in the sewers will be less diluted and hence cheaper to treat. It would also eliminate flooded basements and river pollution. Mr. Eveleigh is also a fan of green roofs which would absorb rain water, insulate the roof in winter and cool it in the summer. He also believes that commercial parking lots should feature surfaces that water can penetrate or that parking should be in multilevel parking structures rather than be vast expanses of pavement as at present – pavement which encourages storm sewer runoff.

In his dream of dreams, he sees a whole city built underground, covered by one expansive green roof. This would eliminate all snow plowing and all frost damage. But this is very much in the future,

even for him. His plan to prevent urban sprawl is to insist that all buildings be at least four storeys tall. He acknowledges that because of movies such as “Miracle on 34th Street”, the

single family home with a backyard is the dream of people today, a dream to which developers are pandering. CANDIDATE, SEE 9

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Richard Eveleigh wants his ideas to be heard. They are included in his platform as he seeks to be elected as the Ottawa city councillor for Stittsville ward. “I just want the platform to sell,” he says, adding that some have accused him of being too futuristic in his thinking. His only reply to such an accusation is that such thinking is better than being stuck with ideas from back in the 1950’s. His primary focus is to get his ideas out among the public. “If I win, okay,” he says. “Icing on the cake as they call it.” Although he lives in a downtown ward currently represented by councillor Diane Holmes, he signed up to run in the Stittsville ward not only because at the time no one else had submitted a nomination but also because he feels that he and councillor Holmes share some common ground and so he is not opposed to her representation. Mr. Eveleigh believes that his forward looking platform will make it so that people will enjoy living in Ottawa. He wants a city where people can get around by walking or biking or, if long distances are involved, by bus. This, indeed, is what he does, walking when he can, biking even in the winter and taking the bus when necessary, such as when he travels to Stittsville. He attended the Canada Day celebrations in Stittsville this year and was impressed with the number of children in attendance and with how much fun they were having. Mr. Eveleigh’s main contention is that all municipal matters are related to the environment, whether it be recycling, storm water management or development. He was and remains a fan of the city’s 20/20 plan which he says reflected a lot of the ideas in his platform. Indeed, he says that he would not have to be seeking elected office had the 20/20 vision been implemented by the city. He advocates recycling, so much so that he would like laws forcing recycling. In his view, this would eliminate all garbage and thus

But he says that living in a building of four storeys or more is more convenient and prevents urban sprawl. He would encourage such building by charging taxes based on a building’s footprint rather than on its overall size. He is waiting for a movie to be built about a person wanting to live in a four storey building that he thinks will change the dynamic about what people want as a home. “If they build it, they will come, he says about four storey buildings. Mr. Eveleigh believes that no public tax money should go to build roads but that they should be built by developers. He is also against the use of gas tax revenues for building roads. He thinks that gas tax monies should be used to help pay for the health system because of all the lung diseases that

are caused by the air pollution from vehicle emissions. He would also prevent urban sprawl and protect farmland by having farmers not pay taxes on their land. However, if the land were sold and went out of farming, all of these back taxes would have to be paid. He thinks that this would make agricultural land very expensive for any developer and would serve to protect farmland from development. Mr. Eveleigh is a supporter of public libraries, calling them important in the lives of average people and especially poor people. “It’s a good spot for getting information and research, he says, adding that perhaps library branches should have more study rooms since poor people usually do not have any work space at home. A library branch also provides computer access for those who cannot afford such in-

INFORMATION

MEETING ABOUT CREATING ENERGY

Veteran politician wants more talk about waste JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF What is wrong with this picture? Everyone in the city of Ottawa creates garbage. Only a portion of the population of the city uses public transit. Yet, most election talk this fall is about light rail and a downtown tunnel. To Peter Robertson, a former mayor Brampton and veteran municipal politician, this scenario is out of whack. There should be much more conversation about waste disposal and the new technologies that create energy from waste. Speaking at an information meeting on energy from waste technologies hosted by the Carleton Landowners Association on Thursday, Sept. 30 at the Carp Agricultural Hall in Carp and attended by about 175 people, Mr. Robertson said that a municipal government should refuse to accept the old way of burying garbage in the ground. Waste has value, he said and municipal politicians are in control of it. He urged that the municipality build its own energy from waste plant, saying that if the city of Ottawa can build a tunnel and light rail transit system, it surely can find $70 million for a waste to energy plant. He knows of what he speaks because the city of Brampton built a waste to energy incinerator 17 years ago and it has been operating ever since with its emissions never exceeding Ministry of the Environment standards. Incinerators are not bad, he claimed, noting the 17 years of experience in Brampton and the 500 communities in Europe where incinerators are used to burn garbage. Mr. Robertson said that these waste to energy plants or incinerators would be viable economically if the rate for the electricity produced was increased from the current 6.5 cents per kilowatt hour to 14 cents per kilowatt hour and if the steam that is produced as well is used to heat facilities, either industrial buildings or, in the case of Ottawa, government buildings. He said that increasing the money paid for generating energy from waste would be what the provincial government should do if it wants to move away from landfills. Mr. Robertson also had advice for the federal government, saying that global warming can be reduced by banning organics from landfill sites. These organics in landfills produce 25 percent of the methane gas in Canada and this is a greenhouse gas. In Europe, organics are banned from disposal in landfill sites as waste has to be thermally treated first i.e. burned. He also spoke out against trucking garbage to the United States, saying that Canadians should be responsible for their own garbage. He noted that emissions from trucks carrying this garbage to the United

States are as bad or worse than the gas emissions from landfill sites. Mr. Robertson urged citizens to become mobilized with the power of the people to influence public opinion on the waste to energy concept. He also criticized the green bin program. “The biggest sham that has ever happened in Ontario is the little green box,” he said, saying that the food scraps in the green bin are trucked away at a cost and then composted by a private company, creating methane gas which is a greenhouse gas. The resulting compost continues to have heavy metals and pathogens in it, he said. “What the hell are we doing composting,” he exclaimed, based on his premise that using waste to thermally create energy is the way that all garbage should be treated. Mr. Robertson was the outspoken star of the information meeting which also saw representatives of four companies involved with waste and energy pro-

duction make presentations. Remi Godin, gas operations manager for Waste Management, told about the firm’s landfill gas to energy projects including the newly opened facility at the Carp Road landfill site. This technology uses methane gas produced by a landfill and converts it into electricity by using the landfill gas to run giant engines which produce the electricity which is then sold to the grid. Alisdair McLean of Plasco Energy Group explained the firm’s plasma gasification technology which is now being used at a commercial scale demonstration facility at the city’s Trail Road landfill site. The Plasco process converts garbage into a gas which is then fed into engines to produce electricity. He claimed that this process allows for the production of more electricity per tonne of waste than just using landfill gas to power an engine.

The information meeting wound up with a question and answer session, with Mr. Robertson and the four presenters serving

as the response panel, with Tom Black of 11 the Carleton Landowners Association as the moderator. Stittsville News - OCTOBER 07, 2010

The Plasco process converts the solid waste to gas by heating the garbage up, not enough to burn but to become a gas. Plasco Energy Group will be building a plant using its process in Red Deer, Alberta with 2012 as the operating date. The firm also has prospects in California, the United Kingdom, Poland and China. Robert Graves, representing TBU Stubenvoll, told about the Austrian firm which designs waste to energy plants across Europe. “It’s about time Canada woke up and smelled the garbage, Mr. Graves, a 30 year resident of Goulbourn, told the gathering in explaining that the Stubenvoll firm has built waste to energy plants in 17 countries. He said that waste has been treated in a thermal way since 1961, with refinements happening

in the time since then. He said that in Europe, it is against the law to dispose of waste that has not been thermally treated. He said that burning garbage to create energy eliminates the greenhouse gases, leachate pollution, odour and visual impact of landfill sites. Nick Vandergraft, a spokesperson for Northern Watertek, which champions the Vortex energy from waste technology, said that Canadians have to find a better way to deal with waste and move away from the model of simply digging holes in the ground and putting in garbage. He said that the Vortex process is proven technology that works, with no atmospheric discharge, the creation of “little black pebbles which can be used as aggregate and 98 percent destruction of garbage, with electricity or heat produced.

Lots of feet hitting ground JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Eight hundred half marathoners and another 300 in the 3K Family Fun walk/run. That’s going to be a lot of feet hitting the ground in the first annual 9 RUN RUN in Stittsville on Saturday, Oct. 23. But this is the goal for organizers of this inaugural event being held to raise funds for Project s.t.e.p., a support, treatment, education and prevention initiative to combat substance abuse among young people. Race director Brenda Tirrell told members of the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville at their Sept. 28 meeting that registration for the half marathon event is now just under the halfway mark for the planned 800 runners. Runners from as far away as Fort McMurray and Quebec City have registered. She expressed confidence that 800 runners will register for the half marathon. As far as the 3K Family Fun walk/run is concerned, about 150 participants are now registered and hopes are still high that the projected 300 participant goal will

be met. There is to be a major push coming through A Channel, flyers and other means to reach this registration total. Both the half marathon and the 3K Family Fun walk/run will start from Sacred Heart High School on Abbott Street in Stittsville. The half marathon will follow a route involving Abbott Street, Stittsville Main Street, Flewellyn Road, Munster Road, Fernbank Road, Jinkinson Road and the Trans Canada Trail back to Stittsville. Including the Trans Canada Trail in the route makes this a unique experience for half marathon runners. The idea of holding this firstever 9 RUN RUN emergency services run came about as a result of Ottawa Police Services chief Vern White having the goal of running in a number of marathons this year. In addition, chief White is heavily involved in promoting Project s.t.e.p. and healthy living in general. This all led to the idea of holding a local half marathon and after various dates were investigated,

including some as early as July, the Saturday, Oct. 23 date was decided upon. The name 9 RUN RUN came about thanks to Ben von Jagow of Stittsville whose mother, Karen, is a running partner of Brenda Tirrell. It was being called the Ottawa Emergency Services Run in its early planning stages until Ben made the suggestion that it be called the 9 RUN RUN, a takeoff on the 91-1 phone number that is called to access emergency services. “We thought that was very clever of Ben,” Brenda said in her presentation to the Rotary Club and the 9 RUN RUN name was adopted. The three emergency services, fire, police and paramedic service, are all supporting the event and will be involved. There have also been corporate sponsors who have come on board such as Bradley’s Insurance, BMO Nesbitt Burns, Coldwell Banker First Ottawa Realty, McDonald’s (Stittsville and Kanata), Thomas Cavanagh Construction Limited, Kunstadt Sports, Creo Marketing, the Running Room, Bob FM 93.9, the A Channel, Zoom Photo, the city of

Ottawa and Popeye’s Supplements. The Stittsville Rotarians are also going to be involved in some way. A Shelter Box, the disaster relief program which the Rotary Club in Stittsville has been supporting,

Not only has there been no reply to my letter as of yet, Mr. Watson has repeatedly ignored my inquiries by fax and phone as to where the reply is; four months after the fact. As an elected representative of Stittsville I have been very clear on my opposition to this expansion, as has the current Mayor of Ottawa, Larry O’Brien. As October 25th fast approaches Mr. Watson should be straight with people of Stittsville and Ottawa! Norm Sterling, M.P.P. Carleton-Mississippi Mills

Deaf and blind Kevin Frost is top athlete, helps others JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF He may be deaf and blind but this condition has not stopped Kevin Frost from becoming a champion speed skater, a nationally ranked rower and, most importantly, someone who helps others. And his goal is to have long track speed skating included as a Paralympic sport and personally to win its first medal. He currently has ten percent hearing and four percent tunnel vision. Now 43, it all began for Kevin back when he was in grade six and his hearing problem became evident. With lip reading and a hearing aid, he continued on, refereeing hockey games (his dream was to be a National Hockey League linesman) and working for 18 years at Loeb’s. An admitted workaholic, he was putting in 100 hour weeks but making good money and was married with three children. But then as his vision deteriorated, he was diagnosed with Usher’s Syndrome, a disease which sees a person lose their hearing when young and then their vision later in life. “I thought that I had hit a cement wall,” Kevin told members of the Stittsville District Lions Club, their spouses and guests at the Lions’ 46th charter anniversary night at the Lions Hall in Stittsville on

Friday night, Oct. 1 where he was the guest speaker. He was angry and frustrated that his life was being so dramatically altered as he lost his driver’s license, his job and his refereeing. Even his marriage ended. But with the help of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and friends, he moved on, getting used to his vastly reduced income. He got his independence back thanks to Nemo, a hearing and seeing guide dog who has now been with him for about seven years. They travel everywhere together. Kevin decided that he did not want to sit around and so he joined the Orleans Lions Club, coming to realize that the Lions philosophy to serve others is very powerful. The Orleans Lions Club has gone on to become one of his biggest supporters. Another woman entered his life and her three children made for a joint family of six children. Kevin always loved being on the ice and so he turned to speed skating. He competed against able bodied skaters in short track speedskating and at the 2007 Canadian masters championship, he won the gold medal against over 200 other competitors. He was the only disabled skater in the competition. He then switched to long track speed skating as he felt that there was a better chance at getting it

recognized as a Paralympic sport than the more “roller derby” short track speed skating. He went on to compete in a World Cup event in Calgary, the only disabled skater among the 380 competitors. He finished 27th in that competition. He followed this up with an 18th place finish against 280 skaters in Germany the next year. Then, last year, he attended the first speed skating championship for the blind in Russia. Just getting there was what he termed a “miracle” due to the $5,000 cost involved. But thanks to the generosity of the Orleans Lions Club plus some good media attention, he was able to collect the $5,000 in four weeks and he was off to Russia. He ended up breaking four world records, capturing four gold medals and being named the top overall athlete at the competition. He recalls that listening to the playing of O Canada at the conclusion of the competition was a very powerful experience. Kevin is also now training with the Canadian Paralympic rowing team, adding another sport to his resume. Indeed, after he is finished with speed skating and rowing, he wants to try blind golfing and curling. At present, for his sports, he trains up to 30 hours a week. You have to train hard, he says, noting

that the more a person puts into such training, the more the athlete gets back. But sports are just part of who

Kevin Frost is. He also is into helping others. KEVIN FROST, SEE 15

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Chalk up one more second degree black belt for Therien Martial Arts & Fitness in Stittsville. The latest recipient to move along the black belt road, reaching the second degree, is 15 year old Victor Seregelyi who received his second degree black belt at the Cedarow Court facility on Saturday, Sept. 25 following a seminar there featuring Kevin Kearns, one of today’s best known martial arts instructors who is now trying to introduce the techniques of the martial arts to fitness programs. Golden glow for West Ottawa Soccer Warriors Premier Girls U12 team SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The team’s season began in cold, windy and rainy conditions in early May. And the season ended in a similar cold, windy and rainy environment in September. But

thanks to an awesome summer of developing confidence getting ready to take their skills to the next level and thanks to showing all of the heart and character of true champions, the West Ottawa Soc-

cer (WOS) Warriors Premier Girls U12 team had a golden glow as its season ended. That’s because the WOS Warriors struck gold in the “Kicking In The Capital Tournament” on the weekend of Sept. 11/12, emerging as the gold medal champions. But this did not come easily. The girls had a rough start to the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 11, placing last in the round robin play that day. However, the girls

battled back from this rough start, rebounding in Sunday semi-final action to beat the WOS Titans 1-0 on a last second goal. This victory propelled the Warriors into the tournament final. In this final, the Warriors fell behind 2-0 in the first ten minutes of the game against Nepean City Storm. The girls showed great heart and determination, battling back from this early deficit to tie the game, forcing overtime.

The Warriors’ Claire Woodfield scored the Warriors’ golden goal with just under two minutes left in the overtime, giving the Warriors the tournament championship. West Ottawa Soccer is a partnership of clubs involving the Goulbourn, Almonte, West Carleton and Kanata Soccer Clubs. As a result, players for the West Ottawa Soccer teams come from the areas covered by these four soccer clubs.

The Sacred Heart High School Huskies now have two shutout victories under their belts. The senior football team defeated the John McCrae Secondary School Bulldogs 17-0 on Friday, Oct. 1, the team’s second straight victory shutting out the opposition. The Huskies defeated the Merivale High School Marauders 19-0 in their opening game of the season the week before. The Huskies got off to a good start in the game against John McCrae, played at the Barrhaven school, as the opening kickoff hemmed the Bulldogs deep in their own zone. The result was that the Huskies eventually took over the ball on the Bulldogs’ five yard line. However, the Huskies failed to reach the end zone and settled for a field goal kicked by Cody Scott. This is how the first quarter ended, 3-0, for the Huskies. In the second quarter, the

Huskies blocked a Bulldogs punt, taking over the ball on the John McCrae 20 yard line. A series of running plays with Alex Demidenko carrying the ball saw the Huskies make it to the three yard line. It was then one more slashing run by Demidenko and the Huskies had a touchdown. Cody Scott kicked the convert to make it 10-0 which is how the first half ended. In the third quarter, the Huskies drove the ball down the field, with Alex Demidenko carrying the ball over the line for another touchdown. A convert by Cody Scott made it 17-0 which is how the game ended. The Huskies had a couple of chances to score in the fourth quarter on long field goal attempts but none was successful. The Huskies assumed a conservative approach in this fourth quarter, running the ball to wind down the clock and prevent any passing mistakes. Huskies’ head coach Curtis

MacNeil was pleased with the play of the Huskies in the game. He noted that the defense once again played well as indicated by the second straight shutout of the opposition. However, coach MacNeil thought that the Huskies took too many penalties in the

game, some of which killed offensive drives. He said that this will be dealt with in practice this week. Coach MacNeil, though, is pleased with the Huskies’ kicking game this year, with Cody Scott handling both the place kicking and punting duties.

Rough outing for Storm

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF It was another rough outing for the South Carleton High School Storm. The senior football team lost 34-3 to St. Peter High School in a game at the Bob Erwin field at South Carleton in Richmond on Friday afternoon, Oct. 1. It was 19-3 for St. Peter’s near the end of the first half when the visitors intercepted a South Carleton pass and ran the ball back for a touchdown on the last play of the half. The convert was good, making it 26-3 for St. Peter’s at half time. The opening kickoff of the second half saw the Storm give up a single point, making it 27-3. St. Peter’s followed this up with another converted touchdown, making the final score 34-3. This was the second game in a row opening up the season that the Storm suffered a lopsided loss. In the team’s season opener against St. Mark High School, the Storm suffered a 36-0 loss. In high school junior football on Tuesday, Sept. 28, the South Carleton High School Storm travelled to St. Mark High School in Manotick for the team’s season opener. The Storm fell to St. Mark by a score of 25-6 in this game.

Beavers cut down Royals JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF It was close in the first period. Not so close in the second period. And nowhere near close in the third period of the Stittsville Royals’ Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League game against the visiting Clarence Beavers at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 3. The game was a scoreless draw after the first period but the Beavers tallied four unanswered goals in the second period to jump out to a 4-0 lead going into the third period. The third period saw the Beavers score another four goals to end up winning the game by an 8-1 count. Scott Barnes, assisted by Dave Borden,

scored the only goal of the game for the Royals. Josh Cooper, in the Royals’ net, ended the game with 48 saves. This home game loss came on the heels of another loss on Friday, Oct. 1 when the Royals dropped a 5-4 decision to the Metcalfe Jets. The Stittsville Royals are playing two home games on this upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. The Royals are hosting the Shawville Pontiacs this Sunday, Oct. 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville. The Royals will be back on the GRC ice 24 hours later, at 2:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 11, when the Perth Blue Wings will be the visitors.

IN RIDEAU-GOULBOURN

WARD

Richmond’s Iain McCallum believes he has lots to offer JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF

Iain McCallum of Richmond is back seeking election to be the city of Ottawa councillor for Rideau-Goulbourn ward. He ran in the municipal election four years ago, placing third in a four-person race in the ward with just over 12 percent of the vote. He thought he would do better and so now he is back in this year’s election to do just that. “I think I have a lot to offer to the city,” he says, citing his experience with unions (he is involved with the union at his place of employment, Canada Post) as well as his varied work experiences as a mechanic, barn builder and businessman. He owned a sports store in Manotick for several years and still runs a paralegal business in addition to working for Canada Post. The last election campaign also served to change his outlook somewhat, all for the better. It happened at a candidates’ meeting for Country Club Village at the Canadian Golf and Country Club where the primary issue was the long proposed direct road to the community, eliminating the need to travel west before heading east to Stittsville or Ottawa. It dawned on him as a result of

discussions at the meeting that municipal politics is not only always about money. There is also quality of life to be considered. “A light went on,” Iain says in remembering that meeting. “It’s not all about money. It’s about getting things done properly.” “It became more about people than just about money,” he says about that last campaign after that meeting. But even though his views changed somewhat in the last campaign and remain with him today, he still sees the need to get municipal taxes under control. “We pay enough taxes that we should basically have everything,” Iain says. He has some doubts about the proposed downtown tunnel for the new light rail system. He acknowledges that having a tunnel downtown will fix up the problems on two streets in the downtown area for half an hour a day but notes that the tunnel and light rail proposal will not improve service to the suburban areas of the city, both east and west of downtown. He says that no one in the outlying areas is going to start taking the bus simply because of the downtown tunnel. In other words, he feels that the downtown tunnel and light rail

plan involves a lot of money for little benefit. Mr. McCallum pledges that as a councillor, he will post on a website everything that he would be spending as a councillor and also how he voted on every issue. As a former business owner in Manotick, he is critical of the city for not encouraging business in the municipality. “We need to encourage more business and make it a place that people want to come to,” he says about the city, especially related to tourism. “We have to get the word out,” he says, proposing that the city apply to host the Commonwealth or other major events to attract attention to the city. Mr. McCallum cites the situation of Manotick as an example of how opportunity has been missed. He wonders why Manotick is not like Merrickville which is another community that is on the Rideau River and attracts thousands of visitors and tourists. Who from Ottawa would travel all the way to Merrickville if Manotick offered the same kind of experience, Mr. McCallum asks. “That’s where the ball has been dropped,” he says. But he does not think that everything is lost. He thinks that Stitts-

ville has missed this boat but that He became involved in the Manotick, Richmond and even coaching aspect of the sport, takNorth Gower can still become des- ing coaching courses and coaching tination communities for day trip- with the Ottawa Pacers Speedskatpers, shoppers and tourists. ing Club. MPP makes a pitch for new high school SPECIAL TO THE NEWS A recent mention in the Ontario Legislature of the need for a public high school in Stittsville has added more energy to a letter writing campaign to politicians about the issue. Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Norm Sterling brought up the matter last week in the Ontario Legislature, pointing out the need for such a new public high school in the community. He said that he is hoping to meet formally with the Ontario Minister of Education soon to discuss the matter. In his remarks, Mr. Sterling noted that the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board has identified a high school in Stittsville as a top priority and has submitted a business case for such a project to the Ontario Ministry of Education. He said that Stittsville now has a population of 26,000, with more development planned, but that the community was missing a public high school. “Students and their parents have to choose between travelling 15 kilometers to South Carleton High School in Richmond or going to Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville, which now has a student population of 1,800, Mr. Sterling said in the Legislature. “Twenty-

five percent of the students who attend public elementary schools in Stittsville change to the Catholic high school because it is their community, he said, adding that Sacred Heart is also a “pretty good high school. He pointed out that a new public elementary school in the south end of Stittsville will soon be under construction but that the students who attend this new school will need a public high school in their community. This mention in the Ontario Legislature is adding impetus to a letter writing campaign to politicians in support of a new public high school in Stittsville. It is felt that the matter is now publicly on the radar of the province and there is a need to keep the momentum going for the project. The letter writing is to emphasize reasons why Stittsville will be better served by youth attending public secondary school in their own community. Those being targeted in this letter writing campaign are Hon. DAVID DICK • DR. MICHAEL ROBERTS date when the road would be com- DR. AGGIE FRANZMANN • DR. LORENDA SMITH • DR. CHRIS MOREY pleted. HOURS: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday 8 am - 6 pm Candidate Iain McArthur said Tuesday 8 am - 8 pm - Saturday 9 am - 12 noon that the road issues comes down w w w. k a n a t a o p t o m e t r y. c a to a question of lack of political leadership at both city hall and the province. He suggested that the solution may rest in pushing the province on the matter. He, though, said that he could give no firm date as to when the road might be done. Candidate Bruce Webster likewise said that he, like everyone, cannot give any specific date for the completion of the road. He said that it is a case of political leadership, of going to Toronto and demanding from the province that this project be done. “It’s a question of so many things the city of Ottawa is afraid to ask for,” Mr. Webster said, citing the need for city control over industrial/commercial/industrial waste as well as over projects like this needed road extension to service Country Club Village. He said that the road was not only a matter of convenience for residents but also of safety, referring to a situation that he had been told about while canvassing in the area about a heart attack victim who paramedics did not reach as quickly as they could because of 411571 confusion about the road situation in the area. He blamed leadership problems (Biblical, Evangelical, Charismatic) for the stalemate regarding the road Holiday Inn & Suites 613-447-7161 extension, noting that incumbent 101 Kanata Avenue info@libertychurch.ca councillor Glenn Brooks had had Sunday Morning: 10 am www.libertychurch.ca four years to work on the file. He said that he had a working relationship with area MPPs Lisa MacLeod and Norm Sterling and that area MP Gordon O’Connor was a personal friend. He said that this is the type of relationships and liaisons that the area’s city councillor needs Mass to succeed. Saturday 5:00 p.m. Sunday 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. Candidate Bruce Chrustie also Holy Spirit Catholic Church stated that he could not give any date when the road extension might 1489 Shea Road, Stittsville be built. However, he did say that he Reverend C. Ross Finlan, Pastor understood what needs to be done, Parish Office: 613-836-8881 • Fax: 613-836-8806 such as using the close relationship which he said exists between MPP Norm Sterling and Tom Cavanagh “Offering Faith, Hope & Love” of Cavanagh Construction. He suggested that people are going to have to think outside the box to get the road built and he believes that he has the experience to do MORNING WORSHIP 10 AM this. 405462

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF All five candidates had the same answer – they cannot give a definite date when the much hoped for road extension to link Country Club Village with Jinkinson Road will be reality. Speaking at the candidates’ meeting held by the Country Club Village homeowners’ group at the Canadian Golf and Country Club in Goulbourn on Wednesday evening, Sept. 29, the candidates for councillor for the Rideau-Goulbourn ward in the city of Ottawa cited culprits such as the Ministry of Transportation, environmentalist Ken McRae, incumbent councillor Glenn Brooks and city hall as the reasons why the road extension has not yet been constructed. Councillor Brooks, who is seeking re-election, told the audience of about 75 persons that the road extension’s problems do not lie with the city but elsewhere, specifically with the province. “The problems are with MTO (Ministry of Transportation of Ontario),” he said. He said that until the province gives permission for the road, the section linking Jinkinson Road with the road access to the Canadian Golf and Country Club and Country Club Village is not going to be done. He questions where the area’s MPP has been in the whole matter, saying that the MPP should be the one trying to get a commitment from the MTO. Councillor Brooks said that he had worked long hours on this matter as had those in the community and yet the project has still not happened. He said that neither he nor any other candidate can give a date when the road might be completed. Candidate Scott Moffatt said that the solution is not to have more meetings about the matter but for the councillor to work with the local MPP to get the province to move on the matter. He claimed that Ken McRae, a known environmentalist, was the person who was able to keep the road from happening and that now the road extension was not going ahead because of the presence of what he termed “two turtles there.” Mr. Moffatt claimed that Tom Cavanagh of Cavanagh Construction has said that he would pay for the road. He wondered where the political leadership has been to get this road

How does teeth whitening work? Does it damage my teeth? Why are my teeth sensitive after whitening them? The peroxide solution which is used to whiten your teeth gently forces oxygen through the pores in the enamel of your teeth. This does not damage your teeth but opens up the pores in your teeth temporarily which in turn may increase sensitivity to cold but only for a few days, that is why we often use fluoride after whitening to block these pores in your teeth and reduce sensitivity. The process virtually erases stains and brightens your tooth enamel or your gums. Call us and ask us about tooth whitening options today!

Q

I’m just not sure if I am ready for retirement living, how can I be sure?

A

We encourage you to go and visit 4 or 5 homes in your area and stay for a short trial stay at one or two that you have narrowed it down to. That way, you will really get a good feel for the home, the staff, the other residents, activities, etc. Each home has it’s very own feel and you want to make sure that your new home feels right for you! 27 Weaver Cres., Kanata 613-591-3991 www.kingswayarms.com waldenmarketing@magma.ca

Q

Do I have to switch to winter tires?

A

No, but it’s highly recommended. Winter tires are specifically designed in their tread pattern and rubber compound for colder weather. Even at 5°C the winter tires will out perform “all-season” tires. A Quebec Ministry of Transportation study showed that winter tires can improve braking up to 25% in cold weather. But make sure to switch back when the warmer weather is back.

Historical fiction - yes or no? JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF

Fact and fiction. Are they complementary or adversarial? Is there a place for historical fiction in the world of historical fact? For David Mulholland, an Ottawa writer who has authored two historical fiction novels, there is a place for such writing in the world of history. That will be his focus when he speaks on the topic “How Historical Fiction Complements the Historical Record” at the upcoming October meeting of JOHN CURRY PHOTO the Goulbourn Township HistoriDisplaying their hats on hat day at St. Stephen Catholic School in Stittsville on cal Society. He will use examples Friday, Oct. 1 are students, from left to right, Morgan Seed, Courtney Albert and from his novels to make his point. Joanna Stanczwk. Stittsville branch of the Ottawa Public Library. Everyone welcome; free admission and refreshments. Mr. Mulholland, who was born in Kingston, raised in Arnprior and now lives in Ottawa, has worked as an advertising copywriter in radio, has been a researcher and story editor for CBC public affairs television, has been a reporter and music reviewer for the Ottawa Citizen, has been a speech writer for several federal government departments and has written a syndicated country music column. In 2001, he began working full time on writing a novel which was published in Oct. 2006 by General Store Publishing House of Burnstown. Titled “McNab,” the novel portrays the lives of real 19th cen-

tury immigrants struggling with the challenges of living in a young British colony. Chief Archibald McNab has imposed a Scottish feudal system on immigrant farmers in the township that he has been entrusted with settling. The novel depicts the 16 year struggle by the immigrants, led by Donald Cameron, against the tyranny of Chief McNab. Mr. Mulholland followed up this initial historical novel with a second one, “Duel” which was published in Oct. 2009. It deals with the fatal duel between John Wilson and Robert Lyon which took place in Perth in 1833. In this novel, the author reveals, based on new research, what actually took place and why the duel went ahead.

SIX

CATEGORIES

Deadline nears in photo contest JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Capture a little bit of Goulbourn heritage in your camera lens and you could not only win some money but could receive recognition for your photographic efforts. This is all thanks to a new heritage photo contest which the Goulbourn Historical Society has organized. The contest runs until Saturday, Oct. 16 which will be the deadline for dropping off photo submissions for the contest at any of Goulbourn’s three Ottawa Public Library branches in Stittsville, Richmond and Munster. The contest is aimed at stimulating interest in the history and heritage of Goulbourn township while also helping to visually document this history and heritage. There are six categories in the contest: historic Goulbourn buildings; “good fences make good neighbours”; old roads and trails; “then and now”; cemetery or headstone scenes; and antiques from attics or sheds. The best entry in each category will receive a $25 prize while the photo judged best overall in the contest will receive a $100 prize. An entrant can submit up to two entries per category, in either colour or black and white. Photographs must be no larger than eight inches by 12 inches. They must not be mounted or framed and must not have been previously published or publicly displayed. There are no entry forms but those entering must affix their names, addresses and phone numbers securely to the back of each sub-

mitted print, clearly indicating the category being entered. Additional points in the judging can be earned by the inclusion of concise, accurate historical identification of the photo subjects, with attention to such essentials as dates, locations, family names associated with old buildings and structures and other features useful in situating the photo subjects in their heritage contexts. The winners will be announced at a public event in early November. By holding this heritage photo contest, the Goulbourn Historical Society hopes that the rich social history and heritage of Goulbourn will be more fully documented and illustrated via photography. The Goulbourn Historical Society is a voluntary organization with membership open to anyone interested in local history. Originally laid out and surveyed in the early 1800’s, Goulbourn township disappeared as a separate municipal entity with the creation of the present city of Ottawa in the year 2000. Goulbourn township was first settled by disbanded British soldiers who had fought in the War of 1812. Goulbourn township includes present day Stittsville, Richmond, Munster, Dwyer Hill, Ashton. Historically Goulbourn township also included the area now covered by the Glen Cairn area of the city of Kanata. For more information about this new heritage photo contest, please contact Lee Boltwood of the Goulbourn Historical Society at 613-836-1491.
