Runners halting traffic JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Motorists planning to move around Stittsville and area this Saturday morning, Oct. 23 should take notice that traffic delays will be a fact of life due to the 9 RUN RUN half marathon and 3K Family Fun Run/Walk that are taking place. Some Stittsville streets and area roads will be either closed or partially closed to accommodate the participants in this event which is raising funds for project s.t.e.p. (support, treatment, education and prevention), a youth substance abuse initiative. This will result in traffic delays. The half marathon will be starting at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart High School on Abbott Street. It is anticipated that the half marathon will take about three and a half hours to complete. Street closures related to the half marathon will be Abbott Street from Sacred Heart High School west to Stittsville Main Street. This will be a total road closure which will take place from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stittsville Main Street from Abbott Street to Fernbank Road will be totally closed as well but only from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. This will involve both lanes of the street until the last runner in the half marathon goes by. These are the only two total road closures as a result of the half marathon. But there will be some partial road closures as well which will be delaying traffic. Stittsville Main Street from Fernbank Road south to Flewellyn Road will have its south-

bound lane closed from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. This will continue until the last runner in the half marathon passes by. Flewellyn Road west from Stittsville Main Street all the way to Munster Road will have its west bound lane closed from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. until the last runner goes by. Munster Road north from Flewellyn Road to Fernbank Road will have its northbound lane closed from 9:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. until the last runner passes. Fernbank Road from Munster road east to Jinkinson Road will have its eastbound lane closed from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. In addition, Ottawa Police Service officers will be stopping traffic in the westbound lane at Jinkinson Road to allow runners to cross over from Fernbank Road to Jinkinson Road. There will be no traffic allowed to turn northbound on Jinkinson Road at this intersection. Jinkinson Road from Fernbank Road north to the Trans Canada Trail will have its northbound lane closed from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. until the last runner passes. Ottawa Police Service officers will also be at the Trans Canada Trail crossing of West Ridge Drive, stopping traffic for runners from about 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. until the last runner goes past that spot. The 3K Family Fun Run/Walk, which will start at 9:30 a.m. from Sacred Heart High School, will be using the Trans Canada Trail westward from the school, going 1.5 kilometers and then returning.

REVEALS PERSONAL STORY

Writer David Mulholland tells about role of historical fiction JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Writer David Mulholland was there to outline his view of the role of historical fiction in the conveying of history. And while he accomplished this in his formal presentation, it was his own personal story that came out in response to

questions from those present that elevated the occasion to a memorable status for the two dozen in attendance at the October monthly meeting of the Goulbourn Historical Society in Stittsville last Saturday. Growing up in Arnprior, Mr. Mulholland went on to become a copy-

Author David Mulholland, right, autographs a copy of his book “McNab for purchaser Gary Miller, left, of RR2, Richmond following his presentation about the role of historical fiction writing which he gave at the October meeting of the Goulbourn Township Historical Society at the Stittsville branch of the Ottawa Public Library last Saturday.

writer at CKOY radio in Ottawa, an Ottawa Citizen reporter, a syndicated country music columnist, a speechwriter, a television show researcher, a stand-up comic at Yuk Yuk’s and since 2001 a writer of historical fiction. He loves music, virtually all kinds, not just country music, and demonstrated a wide knowledge of literature, heartily endorsing Barry Unsworth’s book “Sacred Hunger, a book about the slave trade which was the 1992 co-winner of the Booker Prize and which he called a stunning piece of work. But enough about the personal Mulholland. He was guest speaker at the meeting to explain his view on how history and fiction interact and how historical fiction plays a role in helping people better understand the context of historical facts. He himself has written two historical novels, McNab about the Laird of McNab who controlled settlement in a township named after him at Arnprior, and Duel, a book about the famous last duel at Perth. He has now begun research on another historical novel based on the founding of Bytown and Philemon Wright’s Wrightville or Hull. He feels that this will take him at least five to seven years because of the scope of this under-

taking. To Mr. Mulholland, facts related by historians do not tell the whole story not just because some facts are missing or left out but because there are things that are simply beyond the scope of the historian’s view. These related to what people were thinking at the time, thoughts that Mr. Mulholland feels can be reasonably deduced from the historical record of the times and can be introduced into the story to add to its telling. Even though an historian can record and point out facts, it takes historical fiction to account for why the historical facts take place, Mr. Mulholland asserted. He cited the viewpoint of two other writers of historical fiction, Roy MacSkimming and Margaret Atwood, in justifying his approach to the writing of historical fiction. Both of these writers, in their historical fiction writing, respect the historical record and do not alter facts. Mr. MacSkimming, for example, in his book about Sir John A. Macdonald, respects the historical records for public events such as elections but invented conversations pertaining to private events. But while certain scenes were invented, these scenes are always located in a plausible historical setting based on the premise of

what would Macdonald have said in such a circumstance given his life and times. Ms. Atwood, in her book “Alias Grace about a 16 year old maid servant Grace Marks who was convicted of killing her employer in 1843, did not alter any solid facts available, although some of these facts may now be viewed as inaccurate. But her basic premise was that every major element in the book had to be referenced in the written record of the time but if there were gaps in this record, then situations could be invented. Mr. Mulholland said that historical fiction serves a purpose in giving a reader a broader understanding of why events happened like they did. Historical fiction is dramatized history presented through characters whereas historians tend to interpret historical facts. In his McNab book, Mr. Mulholland did this by inventing a character who was the Laird’s bagpiper. The historical record about Scottish clans reveals that such clan leaders like the Laird had such personal bagpipers. Mr. Mulholland uses the bagpiper to explain the Laird’s viewpoint in the book. Mr. Mulholland can be contacted at author69@hotmail.com. His website can be found at www.davidmulholland.ca.

Stay alert for green flashing light and get out of the way Stittsville and area residents are blessed to be served by the dedicated and community minded volunteer firefighters who respond to emergency calls for the Sterling Howie Fire Hall on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville. Having volunteer firefighters not only saves a few tax dollars in the cost of fire prevention and provides prompt emergency response but also results in the community having a group of people who not only protect us but also work for the community. Remember the Canada Day breakfast or the Villagefest pancake breakfast or the many community events at which the firefighters turn up with a fire truck for display purposes. Our volunteer firefighters are one of the reasons why Stittsville continues to have a village atmosphere and a strong community spirit, despite continuing growth. Volunteer firefighters must rush to the fire hall when an emergency calls comes in so that they can gather up their

LETTER

firefighting gear and clamber aboard a fire truck which rushes to the scene of the emergency, generally a fire but not always – it could be a vehicle accident or other tragic happening. The firefighters drive from their homes or places of work to the fire hall and to assist them in doing this, they have a green flashing light on the dash of their vehicles. These green flashing lights are meant to alert other motorists to the presence of a volunteer firefighter rushing to the fire hall to answer a community emergency. These green flashing lights are not as well known as the traditional fire or police siren and flashing lights but they are just as important. Clearing the way for a volunteer firefighter rushing to the fire hall is just as important. It is, of course, only in communities served by volunteer firefighters where these green flashing lights are used. Any

new residents of Stittsville, if they come from other areas where there are other firefighting arrangements, would not necessarily be familiar with the green flashing lights and their purpose. This is just a reminder to motorists, especially those using Stittsville Main Street, that if you see a green flashing light on the dash of a vehicle, it is a volunteer firefighter rushing to the fire hall for an emergency call. If this happens, move over, just like you would for a police or fire vehicle siren and flashing lights. The quicker that a volunteer firefighter can reach the fire hall, the better it will be for all of us. So, please remember – green flashing light on a dash – pull over and let the vehicle rush by. You will be helping the community by ensuring that our volunteer firefighters have an unfettered and clear path to the fire hall so that they can do their duty and help protect us all in times of distress and tragedy.

TO EDITOR

Borough system better Editor: There have been battles in the past by rural residents defending their rights to have some control over their communities. Though the borough system is not the most perfect answer, if there is one, it is better than the status quo. A councillor cannot be aware of all that is happening in the rural communities as well as in the depths of city departments and gauge impacts of actions of each. A councillor, alone with a limited staff, cannot represent us in a pro-active fashion. We would continue with the current system of finding out what the city is planning to do to us or have done, often by luck, and then spending our time, money and effort trying to make them understand the ramifications, usually quite negative, of their policies, bylaws, procedures, etc. Rurals fought the lack of representation proposed by the city and its re-drawing of the ward boundaries all the way to the Ontario Municipal Board and won, only to have the city change the wards to less representation anyway. Where we had a councillor for Rideau and one for Goulbourn, we now have only one with limited staff and curtailed funds. Look to the booming communities lying outside the city’s boundaries – Russell, Kemptville, Winchester,

Carleton Place, Arnprior. While rurals in Ottawa lose businesses and economic activity, these outlying areas are booming. One of the main reasons is representation. Compare Rideau-Goulbourn with North Grenville. RideauGoulbourn has more people (23,535 compared to 16,000) and a bigger area (736.5 square kilometers versus 350.14 square kilometers) but one fifth the representation and no local on-site planners and other staff. North Grenville has five council members, a fully staffed municipal centre with planners, economic development staff, health and social services … and less taxes and levies. Rideau-Goulbourn has one councillor and perhaps two staff. The borough method may not be the best but it works for many cities and would give us some local autonomy. The province just gave us the powers to create them recently because the province recognized the problems inherent in large administrative districts with no local governance. Rural groups have been fighting for more democracy, more ability to affect outcomes, more representation at the local level with their time, money and tons of effort. Bev Millar Goulbourn

It’s the heat Editor: Regarding the editorial “People have to start leading the way on waste disposal” published in the Oct. 7 issue of the Stittsville News, it must be pointed out that in order for incineration to be economically viable, there are many components that must fall into place and work together. Most of these components are not currently present at the Carp Road landfill site and there is no immediate prospect for them to happen. When garbage is incinerated to produce electricity, 65 to 70 percent of the energy is actually produced as heat. Butterfly Garden at St. Philip SPECIAL TO THE NEWS St. Philip Catholic School in Richmond now has an oasis of beauty and tranquility. Its new Butterfly Garden was officially opened on Thursday evening, Oct. 7. Located in a sheltered area surrounded on three sides by the school facility, the Butterfly Garden became a reality thanks to the efforts of students, parents, sponsors, volunteers and the Ottawa Catholic School Board. The project was headed by parents Nicole Treffers and Joanne Green and a group of volunteers, with support from the School Council. With benches including a u-shaped one and a circular one under a tree, the Butterfly Garden offers a place where students can

relax and chat with friends. The area will also serve as a location for outdoor classes, school masses and other activities. The volunteer group was guided by advice from Ann Coffey and Nicole Belanger who are known for their creative and artistic leadership in developing green playgrounds. The Butterfly Garden is identified not only by a welcoming sign but also by four giant murals featuring butterfly images which are hanging on the wall of the gymnasium which faces the Butterfly Garden. This new Butterfly Garden at St. Philip Catholic School has been opened in the school’s 50th anniversary year. St. Philip Catholic School first opened in Sept., 1960.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Helping hands have made the future of Poole Creek in Stittsville a little rosier. The hands of about a dozen volunteers planted 50 new trees along the edge of Poole Creek on Thursday, Oct. 14, giving a boost to the long term future of the cold/cool water stream which flows through Stittsville. These trees, now only about two feet high, will grow to eventually provide bank erosion control and to help create habitat conducive to aquatic life in the creek. The tree planting was a combined effort by Mississippi Valley Conservation and the Ottawa Stewardship Council in partnership with Evergreen Canada. Among those volunteering were volunteers involved with the Children’s Garden of Old Ottawa East, a project which has received funding from Evergreen Canada. The volunteers were helping with the Poole Creek planting project as a way of showing their appreciation to Evergreen Canada for their funding support

of the Children’s Garden. Phil Sweetnam, a Stittsville businessman who is also a longtime representative of the area on the Board of Directors of Mississippi Valley Conservation, was also among the volunteer planters. The 50 trees planted along this section of Poole Creek downstream from the bridge over the creek in the Forest Creek Drive/Eileen Crescent area were both evergreen and deciduous in order to ensure a future shade canopy for the creek across all seasons. The trees were taller than small saplings in order to give them a better chance of growing in the environment of long grass and other vegetation. The trees were planted on the southeast bank of the creek in this area in a sparsely vegetated section of shoreline. The creek runs straight and does not meander in this section. The day was perfect for fall tree planting, overcast with some rain showers. Poole Creek is considered one of the Stittsville area’s games as it is one of the few cold/cool water-

courses within the jurisdiction of the city of Ottawa. A tributary of the Carp River, its headwaters are in the wetlands west of Stittsville. It flows through Stittsville with much of it lined by a public walkway that is popular with many walkers, joggers and cyclists. In a recent cleanup, Mississippi Valley Conservation and Ottawa Stewardship Council staff worked together to clear natural debris and garbage that was hindering the flow of the creek east of Stittsville Main Street. Clearing debris and garbage from the creek helps maintain it as a healthy waterway. The clearing of the creek allows fish to travel more easily along the channel. The removal of garbage improves water quality and enhances the aesthetic value of the creek. In recent years, interpretive signage has been installed along the Poole Creek walkway. In-stream work done has included the installation of rock weirs and lunker boxes. The rock weirs create flows that oxygenate the water, providing a better habitat for fish. Lunker

boxes are underwater shelters for fish, providing them a place to escape from predators and to spawn. Evergreen Canada is a leading national funder and facilitator of local, sustainable green projects

in school yards, parks and communities across Canada. A not-forprofit organization, it has worked since 1991 to bring nature back to communities and towns across the country.

Ghoul-bourn Spook Show better than ever this year JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The Ghoul-bourn Spook Show will be bigger and better than ever this year – and this is only the beginning. Joseph Carbonetto of Stittsville, who has operated the Ghoul-bourn Spook Show since 2004, first at his home on Oakfern Crescent and since 2008 at his home at 72 Cherry Drive, has had a fond lifelong relationship with Halloween thanks to his older brother. Indeed, he began the Ghoul-bourn Spook Show in 2004 as a tribute to his brother who died from cancer in October 2003. Indeed, his funeral even happened to fall on Halloween that year. “He was a Halloween zealot,” Joseph says about his late brother who was doing Halloween sound effects and other scary Halloween hijinks back in the 1960’s and 1970’s when Halloween consisted of door-to-door trick or treating and generally not much else, unlike today when Halloween has blossomed as a major holiday, spawning a Halloween industry that has resulted in Halloween decorations and Halloween themed destinations like the Ghoul-bourn Spook Show. Because of his brother, Joseph experienced as a youngster the thrill of Halloween and this has stayed with him in his life. So, in 2004, as a tribute to his brother, Joseph began the Ghoul-bourn Spook Show with a few decorations at his then Oakfern Crescent home in Stittsville. Over the years, the Ghoul-bourn Spook Show has grown, especially when he moved to his current home on Cherry Drive with its more spacious double garage. The first year on Cherry Drive, he raised

funds to help out Emily Lusignan, the Stittsville youngster who had to undergo special treatment to combat cancer. Last year the Ghoul-bourn Spook Show accepted donations for the Stittsville Food Bank, collecting over a ton of food to help feed local families in need. This year the Ghoul-bourn Spook Show will be accepting donations for the Ottawa Food Bank and Joseph expects to raise at least twice as much as last year. The Ottawa Food Bank was selected this year because it is the central food bank for the area which works with the local Stittsville Food Bank. In addition, the former Stittsville Haunt, which started in 1998 and was operated by the late Bruce Evely on nearby Morningsun Crescent, donated to the Ottawa Food Bank. Joseph has purchased some of the props used by Mr. Evely in his Stittsville Haunt and is incorporating some of them in this year’s Ghoul-bourn Spook Show. Indeed, he views the late Mr. Evely as a creative genius and is now developing the Ghoul-bourn Spook Show not only as a tribute to his brother but also as a tribute to Mr. Evely and all that he did to make Halloween a special time in Stittsville. This year’s Ghoul-bourn Spook Show will involve a walk through a darkened dungeon in the garage, with skeletons, ghouls, chains and other Halloween props, many of them animated, lining a route illuminated with strobe lights. Every year Joseph tries to have a different setup and theme. He has not yet settled on this year’s theme. “It will probably be something like ‘A

OPEN HOUSE • Sunday, October 24 • 2-4pm

Visit into Darkness’”, he says. He makes a point, though, that the Ghoulbourn Spook Show is designed to be child friendly. Some of the props are actually actors who can regulate their scary activities to the age of the viewer. So, things can be kept not too scary for the younger set but can be racheted up for older teens. And, for those who perhaps do not want to go through the dungeon garage and take

in the Ghoul-bourn Spook Show, there is always the front yard cemetery. And if this cemetery, which is going to have 15 to 20 tombstones and zombies highlighted by a unique fogging system, is a little too frightening for the youngest set, they will be able to take in the scene from across the street where there is a grassed area backed by a cedar hedge. Parade of Lights is set for Saturday, Nov. 27 JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Saturday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. Mark it down on your calendar so that you do not miss what has become one of Stittsville’s most colourful events. There’s the Canada Day fireworks that light up the sky. And there’s this annual Christmas Parade of Lights which lights up Stittsville Main Street. Once again this year, floats and entries will slowly travel along Stittsville Main Street from north to south, decorated with hundreds and thousands of coloured lights and Christmas decorations. Over the past decade, this parade has grown not only to have

more and more entries but also to attract more and more spectators. Last year Stittsville Main Street had crowds lining virtually all of the parade route, right from the School Board Depot through to Carleton Cathcart Street where the route ends. And if the parade were not enough, the evening will also include the official turning on of the Christmas lights at Village Square at the corner of Stittsville Main Street and Abbott Street in the heart of Stittsville. This marks the official launch of the Christmas season in the village of Stittsville. The Stittsville Village Association is looking for

volunteers to staff the barricades which block off the side streets for the parade. Anyone wanting to help out in this way (you get a great view of the parade as it passes by) should contact SVA director and parade organizer Katrina Harder at 613-831-2796 or SVA president Metin Akgun at 613836-5350. Mr. Akgun also urges all businesses, schools, organizations and clubs in Stittsville to consider entering a float in the parade this year. It is always a lot of fun, both for those with entries as well as for the thousands who turn out to line the parade route.

Five storey building is coming JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF There’s a five storey building coming to Stittsville Main Street in the heart of Stittsville. Dharma Developments has received Ottawa city council approval for a 15 metre tall, five storey mixed commercial/residential building on the east side of Stittsville Main Street immediately south of the Stittsville Legion hall. This proposed development, consisting of a five storey building adjacent to the street with 28 stacked dwelling units located behind it, has been a subject of controversy since first proposed by Dharma Developments. The number of dwelling units had originally been proposed at 36 but was reduced to 28 as a result of public input. However, the height of the mixed use building at the front of the site has not been altered from its initial height. “Our main objection has been the height,” Stittsville Village Association president Metin Akgun told the SVA executive at its Oct. 14 meeting at which he reported on council’s affirmative decision about the five storey building. He pointed out that the city’s most recent Official Plan update and the new comprehensive zoning bylaw both continued the three storey, 11 metre building height limit on the site. He said that the 15 metre height approved by city council is contrary to these

city documents, adding that the five storey building will change the entire view of Stittsville Main Street which he noted is a village street, not an urban street. In comments presented to city council’s planning and environment committee on Monday, Oct. 4 where the matter was discussed, SVA director David Jenkins, who handles planning issues, pointed out that Stittsville Main Street in the areas north and south of Abbott Street has a unique and distinct village ambience based on lower roof lines and a streetscape featuring smaller, older buildings. He pointed out that this proposed commercial/residential building, with its excessive height and bulk, will completely overwhelm the area and significantly alter the identity and character of Stittsville Main Street. Quite simply, “it is the wrong building in the wrong location,” he declared in the SVA presentation. Mr. Jenkins noted that approval of the project demonstrates a failure by the city to respect the Stittsville community, choosing a piecemeal approach to development. At the decisive city council vote on the matter, the city solicitor gave the opinion that the 15 metre height for the building is in keeping with new city-wide urban design guidelines which should get precedence over any zoning that exists.

It was pointed out that these urban design guidelines are not the law and yet this opinion by the city solicitor gives these guidelines a status over what is the law, namely the zoning bylaw that exists. Dharma Developments president Akash Sinha, in defending the project previously, has pointed

out that the building, while five storeys in height, has been designed with setbacks to ensure that the impact of the five storeys is minimal. The building will have a three storey front façade with an additional terraced two-storey set back. He also claims that the building has been designed in accordance with the Stittsville Heritage Design Guidelines to respect village character and enhance the pedestrian experience.

Re-Elect Shad Qadri October 25th In 2006 we, in Stittsville, made history by having the highest voter turnout in the City of Ottawa. I encourage everyone in our community to vote on October 25th, 2010, as your vote will ensure that our voice will remain united and strong over the next 4 years!

Let’s make history again in 2010! My focus will be: TAXES - Working towards an affordable tax base. City departments should be starting with a zero based budget policy. TRASH - With the support of the community to make the province accountable in seeking other methods of disposal. Energy from waste must be considered as a viable solution. TRANSIT - Improve East/West transit, current proposed lightrail project is the right step towards bringing Ottawa transit into the 21st Century. Working with OC Transpo, I will provide Stittsville with the best transit option at a reasonable cost. The time is now, in continuing to make the City of Ottawa the best place to live in Canada. This is our city’s future and the time is to Re-Elect Shad Qadri as your councillor. Vision, Common Sense and Proper Direction in the City is what Shad Qadri is all about.

she was organizing for Ottawa. This led to a Twitter friendship in which they chatted back and forth and kept in touch with each other. Mary liked Sonya’s approach to designing and her work and approached her about being spotlighted in the magazine’s Designer At Home feature which shows the home of a designer and tells about the designer’s style and inspirations. This led to a discussion about the projects on which she was working and the Kirkham cottage feature resulted. Mary says that “Ottawa At Home” magazine features all kinds of designers in its Designer At Home feature.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF “Ottawa At Home” is a magazine which celebrates home, living and food in the Nation’s Capital. Each issue features a designer at his or her own home. Each issue also features a cover story which in its Autumn 2010 issue was an article and photos about a yearround cottage delight. And what linked these two prominent stories in the Autumn issue was the designer, Sonya Kinkade of Sonya Kinkade Design of Richmond. She not only was the featured designer in the issue in a five page story with photos entitled “Country charm plus urban appeal” with a sub-title of “A Little Glamour plus A Lot of Country” but also she was the designer who redesigned the interior space and chose all of the furnishings and fabrics for the cottage renovation project of Keith and Shauna Kirkham and family of Richmond. Entitled “Mission Accomplished!”, this story told how the Kirkhams transformed a run-down Big Rideau Lake cottage into a four-season vacation retreat. And they did it with the help of designer Sonya Kinkade who made each room truly stunning but still comfortable and user friendly. This all came about thanks to a Twitter friendship which Sonya developed with Mary Taggart, editor in chief of “Ottawa At Home” magazine and writer of both of these stories in the Autumn 2010 issue which hit the newsstands recently and will be displayed there until November. Sonya had initially contacted Mary Taggart to seek her help in promoting a course about the business end of the designing trade which

“We are very eclectic – anything we think will be interesting to our readers,” she says, noting that Sonya Kinkade’s dedication to her style and her talent stand out. “Her passion as an individual shines through in her work,” she says, adding that Sonya is not only well trained but has a natural, innate talent that adds a wonderful touch to her work. Sonya Kinkade feels that it is rare for the magazine to feature a designer that is rural based like herself and so she considers it quite an honour to be the featured designer in an issue. Most of her work involves renovations and re-decorating. She says that homeowners doing a renovation are coming to realize that hiring a designer up front, while increasing expenses, turns out better in the long run because no mistakes are made, work is done properly and the designer does all of the legwork in searching for appropriate furniture and décor. An initial consultation in which Sonya gets an idea of the likes and dislikes of her prospective clients leads to a proposal from her which describes what will be done. She says that designers tend to get labeled for a certain style and look. She finds that this has happened to her to a certain extent, an outcome which she blames on the fact that the look that she does is the look that most people want. Her work has varied from urban country to a French country look to cottage sheek. But she insists that her work need not be limited to these styles. “I can do anything,” she says, reiterating that she does not want to be labeled for a particular style. Sonya is also not a trend follower. “There’s lots of trends,” she says. “I don’t follow them.” She says that she always sticks with styles that will still be fashionable 20 years from now. “Just stay as basic as possible,” she advises clients, saying that she will never recommend a trend but that if a client insists, she will do it while warning that the trend will

RICHMOND DESIGNER, FROM 12

First half sinks SC Storm JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF

It was like two different games. A first half that saw 41 points scored, all by the visiting team. And a second half which saw no points scored at all. But this is what happened at the high school junior football league game at South Carleton High School in Richmond on Wednesday, Oct. 13, played beneath blue skies on a sunny warm fall afternoon. The first half was disastrous for the South Carleton High School Storm as the visiting St. Francis Xavier High School squad piled up 41 points while shutting out the Storm. It began early as St. Francis Xavier took the opening kickoff and marched downfield thanks to its running game. The Storm defense made a stand and St. Francis Xavier had a third down from the Storm 15 yard line. The visitors went for it and a 15 yard end run resulted in a St. Francis Xavier

touchdown. With the concert, it was 7-0 for the visitors early in the game. When South Carleton got the ball, the first play from scrimmage was a deep pass down the middle. But it was picked off and three plays later, St. Francis Xavier had another touchdown. The convert was missed so it was 13-0 for St. Francis Xavier. St. Francis Xavier went on to score another touchdown before the first quarter was over, this time on a 14 yard run. The convert made it 20-0 going into the second quarter. A bad snap on a punt by South Carleotn saw St. Francis Xavier take over the ball on the Storm’s 14 yard line. An ensuing touchdown pass made the score 26-0, with the convert increasing this to 27-0. St. Francis Xavier scored again when an interception was run back 35 yards for a touchdown. This upped the score to 34-0 when the convert was made. St. Francis Xavier rounded out its first half scoring with another touchdown thanks to a

40 yard run. With the convert, it was 41-0 for the visitors which is how the first half ended. In the third quarter, South Carleton put together a sustained offensive drive but eventually turned the ball over on downs and did not score. Indeed, there was no scoring at all in the third quarter and likewise in the fourth quarter as the game ended 41-0, with all the

scoring being done in the first half. The South Carleton High School Storm have now lost three straight games and are tied with Sir Wilfrid Laurier High School in last place in the six team high school junior football league. St. Francis Xavier is tied atop the league with St. Peter High School, both with three straight wins.

JOHN CURRY NEW STAFF Canadian football at its exciting best. This was what Sacred Heart Huskies coach Curtis MacNeil thought about the exciting ending of the high school senior football league game between the Huskies and the Bell High School Bruins at Bell High School in Bells Corners on Friday, Oct. 14. After marching down the field, the Huskies had the ball on the Bruins’ ten yard line with 30 seconds left in the game and the score tied 7-7. The decision was made to punt the ball for a single rather than try a field goal since earlier in the game a Huskies field goal attempt had been blocked. The Huskies punted the ball into the end zone but the Bruins tried to kick the ball back out. But the ball never got out of the end zone as the Bruins return punt was blocked by the Huskies. In fact, the Huskies recovered the ball in the end zone and thought for a moment that they had scored a winning touchdown. But then the referees entered the fray. The Huskies were called for a procedural infraction lining up for the play while the Bruins also had a penalty assessed on the play. So, because of the offsetting penalties, it was back to the ten yard line for a replay.

The Huskies once again punted the ball into the Bruins end zone but this time the Bruins tried to run the ball out rather than kick it out. The runner was tackled by the Huskies for a single point, giving the Huskies an 8-7 lead. There was time left on the clock for just one more play and Bell High School tried a “Hail Mary” pass that was intercepted by the Huskies’ Brodie Marshall who ran it back to about the Bell 20 yard line. Time, though, had run out and the game was over, with the Huskies capturing an 8-7 win. The game, played under overcast skies with the constant threat of rain, saw the Huskies open the game by marching the ball down to the Bell 18 yard line where the drive stalled. Kicker Cody Scott had his attempted field goal blocked but the Huskies recovered the blocked ball and ended up with a first down on the Bell four yard line. After a Bell penalty moved the ball even closer to the goal line, the Huskies quarterback Ryan Paquette scrambled over the line to score a touchdown and give the Huskies a 6-0 lead. Cody Scott was good on the convert to make it 7-0 for the Huskies. This is how it was at the end of the first quarter.

Allstate Insurance Company of Canada suggests these tips to make your vehicle a distraction-free zone: • Put down the phone: unless you have a hands-free device, forget about making that call. • Dnt txt n drv: it isn’t worth increasing your chances of an accident to send a text while driving, wait until the car is in park. • Stop fiddling: don’t try to do five things at once while driving. Wait until you stop to change the radio station or reset the GPS. • Stay focused: the rearview mirror is made to look at the road, not your hair. Put makeup on or style your hair before leaving home. • Food-free zone: skip the drive-thru and schedule time to satisfy your hunger.

• Keep it down: blasting a tune at max volume or listening to passengers screeching out-oftune lyrics is really distracting. It also prevents you from hearing emergency vehicles.

Distracted driving might not seem like a big deal, but it could change your life. At highway speeds, if you take your eyes off the road for even five seconds, you’ve already traveled the length of a football field – completely blind. Distracted driving is often associated with talking on a cell phone, or more recently texting. But, distracted driving can be attributed to far more than technology - distraction happens every time someone engages in an activity that takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel or your mind off driving while operating a motor vehicle. Talking on a cell and texting get a lot of attention, but it’s important to remember that activities such as changing a CD, using an iPod or GPS, applying makeup, or being pre-occupied with other passengers can be just as distracting. All these activities have the potential to distract a driver and make the potential for a crash 23 times more likely.

How to Drive in Dangerous Conditions

Ask a professional about which tire tread to choose. Next, realize that the higher the speed, the higher the propensity to hydroplane. At lower speeds, it is generally rare to hydroplane, unless the water puddles driven through are exceptionally deep. Reduce speeds when it is raining. Also, lighter vehicles are more prone to hydroplaning. Again, if driving a compact or lightweight vehicle, slow down when water is on the road. Should hydroplaning occur, let off the gas and do not apply the brake or turn the wheels. Once the car slows down and retains traction once more, steer and brake accordingly.

(MC) - Individuals who live in areas of the country where the temperature and weather changes throughout the seasons have to adapt their driving to meet the road conditions. Weather-related accidents are some of the most prevalent but can be largely prevented if the proper driving techniques are followed. Some of the more dangerous driving conditions include heavy rain that causes hydroplaning, driving on ice and driving in heavy snow.

ICE

HYDROPLANING

Ice is a problem that plagues drivers when the temperature drops. While some ice can be detected on the roadway, thin sheets of ice blend in with the asphalt and are known as “black ice.” Black ice can be undetectable until a car begins to skid. Many people have trouble driving on icy roads. In fact, winter conditions often lead to accidents. More than 500 fatalities were attributed to snowy, icy roads in the 2008-2009 winter season in the U.S. It is important to make some modifications to a vehicle if driving on ice will be commonplace this season. At the least, proper tire inflation is important to maintain

Hydroplaning occurs when water on the roadway accumulates in front of a vehicle’s tires faster than the weight of the vehicle can push it out of the way. The water pressure can push the vehicle up on a thin layer of water, essentially breaking the tires’ contact with the road. In a matter of seconds, a driver can lose control and end up swerving out of his or her lane. It is important to follow a few guidelines to prevent hydroplaning. First, keep tires well maintained. Wornout tread can contribute to hydroplaning, as can inadequately inflated tires. Certain tread patterns are more capable of diverting water away from the tires.

traction. Tires should also be checked for tread, as bald tires will do little to grip the road. Individuals who want even more protection should consider switching to snow tires for the winter. These tires are made from a softer rubber so they can better grip the road. They may also feature a different tire tread for even more traction. Snow chains can be used to offer greater grip. However, speeds will have to be greatly reduced when chains are in place. Reducing speed is helpful when driving in an inclement condition, including on ice. It helps a driver to better correct a situation and react. If skidding is experienced, gently steer in the direction of the skid without applying the brakes. When traction is resumed, slow down and correct the car.

over to a safe area and wait out the storm. Some people experience trouble with snow accumulation on roads that have not been plowed. A lower-profile car with smaller tires may not be able to navigate through snow drifts and end up getting stuck. This can prove dangerous if the car stalls in the middle of a road where visibility is poor. The best advice for driving in snow is to assess the situation. If it is falling heavily, it can be safer to stay home. If a person must drive, reduce speed and leave a very large buffer zone between the vehicles to allow for emergency stopping. When approaching intersections or stop signs, begin braking early to prevent skidding through. Also, be extremely cautious of other vehicles, as they may be experiencing trouble stopping as well.

HEAVY SNOW Driving in snow is different from driving on ice, but they share some similarities. Snow can be melting and freezing on roads simultaneously, depending on whether salt and sand have been applied by road service personnel. Therefore skidding from hydroplaning and ice may occur. Another hazard from snow is reduced visibility. Driving under blizzard conditions is very dangerous. Wind and snow can cause white-out situations, essentially wiping out any visibility. In these instances, a driver should pull

Vance’s Service Cenre Ltd.

(MS) -- The cold weather means a few different things for people, like shoveling snow, kids’ sled races, and treacherous driving conditions. Snow, sleet and ice can make for difficult driving, even for experienced people behind the wheel. For example, from 2004-06, the Ohio State Highway Patrol recorded 105 fatalities on snowy or icy Ohio roads and there were nearly 15,000 injury accidents. As we prepare to once again enter the season of tricky road conditions, it may pay for drivers of all ages to undergo a refresher course in safe winter driving techniques. * Before you leave the building, check the latest weather report. It will help you anticipate any approaching storms and plan accordingly. Keep the radio tuned to a traffic and weather station to keep abreast of any changing situations, accidents or weather warnings. * Prepare your vehicle by stocking it with winter survival necessities. Winter weather can often mean breakdowns. Getting caught on the side of the road for a few hours can be treacherous in subzero weather. Make sure that you have certain supplies in your trunk for such emergencies. Stock up on road flares, a warm blanket, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, bottled water, extra windshield washer fluid, sand or cat litter (this can be used to provide traction if your wheels are slipping trying to get in and out of a parking spot or ditch), a first aid kit, and a cell phone. * Try to keep a full tank of gas during cold weather so that the fuel lines won’t freeze.

Snowy road conditions can make for treacherous driving conditions. Use caution and common sense when traveling the roads this winter. * Winter driving requires different tactics. One of the best tips is to slow down. Also leave much more space between your vehicle and others on the road; winter road conditions often require longer stopping times. Start braking very early on as you approach any intersections to compensate for skidding. Avoid abrupt actions while operating the vehicle. Sudden stopping, steering or accelerating can cause you to lose control of the car. * Many people purchase SUVs because they think that 4-wheel-drive vehicles will enable them to drive in snowy conditions without making any changes to their driving behavior. This is not the case. It’s important to note that SUVs do not provide invincibility in winter conditions. They may offer a bit more traction on snowy roads, but all bets are off for any vehicle when there is ice underfoot. Every driver should be cautious and slow down. * Impaired visibility from slush and salt being

kicked up on the windshield can make driving dangerous. Keep windshield washer reservoirs topped off. Also, it may pay to purchase windshield wipers that are geared toward the winter and can clear snow and ice more easily. * Pay attention and don’t take your eyes off of the road. Look further ahead in traffic so that you’ll be able to determine conditions and anticipate what moves you’ll have to make based on the behaviors of drivers up ahead. Staying alive in a winter accident could require split-second decisions. * Remember that trucks are heavier than cars and will require even more time for stopping. Don’t cut off a truck -- or any vehicle -- in snowy conditions. * Use your brakes correctly. If you have anti-lock brakes, you should simply apply slow, steady pressure. Pumping the brakes is only for older vehicles without ABS systems.

Soccer clubs vote in favour of merger as applause broke out. The Goulbourn Soccer Club’s special meeting for the voting lasted only 20 minutes. This merger is considered a marriage of equals, with both clubs bringing sizeable memberships and considerable assets to the new merged entity called the West Ottawa Soccer Club. Total membership of this new merged club will be 7,300 members while the annual operating budget will be about two million dollars. The new Club will also have $760,000 in cash reserves. It was three years ago that soccer clubs from the west end of Ottawa came together to collaborate on delivering a united representative soccer experience. West Ottawa Soccer was the brand created to represent this partnership. It is this partnership that is now evolving into a merger of the Goulbourn and Kanata clubs. The new merged West Ottawa Soccer Club is committed to structuring things differently with regard to player development. Adhering to the principles laid out by the Canadian Soccer Association’s Long Term Player Development, it will be a case of helping players

the two smaller clubs. This will include a better way to train coaches, a better way to collaborate, a better way to mentor players, a better way to strengthen the community, a better way to develop referees and a better way to grow the sport in general. A merged club will provide more options to a larger number of players at both the recreational and representative (competitive)

levels and will be able to offer better quality programs, recruit more volunteers and help grow soccer in the community. The West Carleton Soccer Club will not initially be involved in the merger, although West Carleton competitive players will play under the West Ottawa Soccer banner. The Almonte Soccer Club, another possible merger partner, will not be involved at this time.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The West Ottawa Soccer Club is a giant step closer to reality. The memberships of both the Goulbourn Soccer Club and the Kanata Soccer Club have voted in favour of a merger to form the new West Ottawa Soccer Club at separate special general meetings last week. At the Goulbourn Soccer Club meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the Sacred Heart High School auditorium, the vote in favour of the merger was overwhelming. About ten out of the 75 persons at the meeting voted against the merger. Most at the meeting had more than one vote as they were able to represent the other Club members in the family. The Goulbourn Soccer Club executive now has until Nov. 23 to undertake any due diligence required for the merger. It also must receive the Kanata Soccer Club’s audited financial statements for the year ended on Sept. 30 by Dec. 15. Other than that, it is full speed ahead with the merger with the new West Ottawa Soccer Club expected to be operational by this coming summer of 2011. It has been stated, though, that registration and programs will be remaining the same for the 2011 season. The merger will involve the transfer of assets and reserve funds from both of the existing clubs to the new West Ottawa Soccer Club. Goulbourn Soccer Club president Brian Mason said after the vote that the decision made for the merger will be seen a couple of years from now as being the proper, right direction for soccer in this area not only in terms of excellence in Ottawa but also in the province. Mr. Mason’s announced that the Kanata Soccer Club had also voted for the merger at a separate meeting. “It looks like we’re a go,” he said

Candidates make their pitches The two candidates for Ottawa city councillor for ward six (Stittsville) in the upcoming municipal election made their pitches and answered questions at a candidates meeting organized by the Stittsville Village Association in Stittsville on Tuesday, Oct. 12. About 25 people attended the meeting in the basement hall at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Stittsville. Candidate Richard Eveleigh, who is challenging incumbent councillor Shad Qadri, outlined his platform which includes building only buildings four storeys in height or higher in order to preserve green space and farmland; limiting the amount of parking space for developments; encouraging green roofs; prohibiting any public money from going to build roads; totally eliminating rain water from the sewer system; and returning packaging and recyclables to stores, eliminating the need for curbside pickup. In reply to a question, he said that his two main platform items were to get people to return their packaging to stores and to eliminate rainwater from the sewer system, preventing basement flooding and keeping pollution out of the Ottawa River. “Those are the two platforms I’d like to focus on,” he said. He also said that he does not feel that Richard Eveleigh

a borough system of governance is needed when communities have groups like the Stittsville Village Association to represent their interests. Candidate Shad Qadri, who has been the Stittsville ward councillor for the past Shad Qadri four years, pointed out that the ward had received $115 million in infrastructure projects during the past four years including a new police station and the widening of Hazeldean Road. He said that city staff should be working on a zero based budget unless there are new services coming on stream, approved by city council. He said that he wants to make sure that the tax rate does not increase beyond the rate of inflation each year. While defending the current east/west light rail project with a downtown tunnel on the basis that the city needs a proper rapid transit system, he also said that he would be working with OC Transpo to improve transit services in the Stittsville community. Mr. Qadri said that he does not believe that there is a need for another level of government like a borough system would impose. “Creating a borough system, I believe, we will be taking a step backward,” he said. He said that it is a councillor’s job to make sure that city hall hears the concerns of Stittsville residents. He also said that a councillor must work with the city’s planning department to make sure that development in the community works well.

Casual Elegance Fine Gifts is now two in one JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Two in one. This is what Casual Elegance Fine Gifts in Stittsville is now. That’s because the Shops of Main Street store is now not only selling gifts and unique items for decorating the home but also is carrying all of the children and baby items which previously were on sale at Casual Elegance Kids in the same plaza. This new look at Casual Elegance Fine Gifts is proving popular with customers

who now can visit just one location to meet both their gift and home decorating needs as well as their gift purchases for children and babies. It all happened as of Sept. 11 when owner Chantelle Turcotte decided to merge Casual Elegance Kids with Casual Elegance Fine Gifts, with everything located at Casual Elegance Fine Gifts which has been open for the past seven years. She had started Casual Elegance Kids just a few doors down in the plaza two and a half years ago to sell chil-

dren and baby items. Even when the store manager had to leave last January, Chantelle thought that she would continue to manage the two stores by herself. But after trying this approach for several months, it became apparent that the workload was too much for one person. In addition, Chantelle likes to be in the store every day and with two of them on the go, she found that, in one store or the other, she was missing many of the face to face interactions which she values so highly with her

regular and loyal customers. Two young children at home also was a consideration and so she decided to close the Casual Elegance Kids store and merge everything in her Casual Elegance Fine Gifts store. So she now has the best of two worlds, handling gifts and home decoration items along with gifts and clothing items for children and babies all under one roof at Casual Elegance Fine Gifts.

Stittsville talent with Orpheus who are members of the cast for “Annie” are Murray Doggett, Paula Berry, Elliza Bowie, Christa Cullain and Cheryl Dubois. Stittsville has talent. Just ask those from Stittsville involved with the upcoming production of “Annie” by the Orpheus Musical Theatre Society. There are eight with a Stittsville connected involved with the production, either as one of the 35 cast members or as a member of the artistic team of the production. Aileen Szkwarck of Stittsville is the choreographer for the production. This is her fifth time serving as the choreographer of an Orpheus show. She also is no stranger to the Orpheus stage as she has performed herself in nu-

merous Orpheus musicals going back to 1989. Her assistant for “Annie” is Jennifer Quinn who teaches at St. Stephen Catholic School in Stittsville and who previously taught at Holy Spirit Catholic School where she and Aileen directed two junior musicals. Ruth Haller of Stittsville is production assistant for “Annie.” She wanted to be part of this upcoming production for sentimental reasons as her son, Nathan, performed the role of Rooster in a production of “Annie” a decade ago. Nathan, a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Stittsville, is now attending the prestigious Julliard School in New York City. Others from Stittsville

‘Grief Walk’ at St. John’s labyrinth SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Grief comes to everyone at some point or other. But how to process this grief, that is the question. One way that has been found to be one of the best tools available to process grief is the experience of a labyrinth walk which in some ways can be seen to be a metaphor for the grief process. This is why St. John’s Anglican Church in Richmond is offering a special program entitled “Grief Walking:

The Healing Labyrinth” this Saturday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. until noon. The program will begin in the church hall on Fowler Street with a brief presentation on grief as well as on the labyrinth itself. Then it will be off to the nearby labyrinth for a “Grief Walk.” Everyone is welcome. More information about this “Grief Walk” can be obtained by contacting Rev. Michel Dubord of St. John’s Anglican Church in Richmond at 613-838-6075.

Mayhem session, youngsters will decorate graham cracker haunted houses, make Halloween decorations, play games and get a spooky tour of the Museum. This workshop is designed for children aged 6 to 10 years. There is a $20 per child registration fee. Space is limited, so quick action to guarantee a spot is recommended. Participants

are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to the workshop to enhance the theme of the event. To register to attend this Mansion Mayhem session or for more information, please contact Kathryn Ward, education officer of the Goulbourn Museum, at 613-8312393 or check out www. goulbournmuseum.ca.

Todd Johnson says one size does not fit all SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Todd Johnson wants to be the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board trustee for this area. A father of two children in the public school system including one at South Carleton High School in Richmond, he has worked in the field of educational policy and has an MBA in finance/economics. Experienced in performance measurement and continuous improvement, he wants to work to rationalize the educational administration, focus on results and find efficiencies that make the delivery of education more effective while enabling schools to do more with less. He wants to see students receive quality education, saying that not one size fits all. “We don’t all want vanilla ice cream,” he says. He notes that incumbent trustee Lynn Scott has voted against some programs and in favour of closing some schools, saying that Mrs. Scott keeps narrowing the Board’s field of vision with regard to education. Mr. JohnTodd Johnson son notes that the funding for a new public high school in Stittsville is a provincial matter and the challenge is to convince the provincial government to provide such funding. He feels that having the provincial election next October should be helpful in moving this project forward at the provincial level. Mr. Johnson wants schools to teach skills required in the 21st century, including team work and digital skills that are required to succeed in today’s global and knowledge based economy. He would like to see closer collaboration between schools and businesses, both to match the skills taught in school to emerging labour market needs and to find innovative ways to raise money. Mr. Johnson has volunteer as a soccer coach and Scout leader and has belonged to community organizations such as historical and horticultural societies.

Lynn Scott wants focus on future SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Incumbent Ottawa-Carleton District School Board trustee Lynn Scott wants education to focus on the future. While she acknowledges that mastery of reading, writing and math is important, she feels that success for today’s student in the future may depend on the ability to think critically and to work with others in a diverse and collaborative environment. To accomplish this, she feels that schools must have the flexibility to support students’ unique learning needs in a caring and responsive way. “I want to be sure we’re spending taxpayer dollars in the most effective ways so that our students will have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed when they graduate after 14 years in elementary and secondary schools,” she says. A trustee for 15 years, Mrs. Scott wants to see a public high school built in Stittsville. She acknowledges that it is a priority for the

Board but that it needs to become a priority for the province which provides the funding. She says that there are enough students in the area for the Board to be able to maintain South Carleton High School, where Stittsville students currently go, while also Lynn Scott having a new high school in Stittsville. She has met with Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Norm Sterling on the matter and said that they will be meeting again in the future. “We really need this school,” she says of the $40 million facility which will take two years to design and build. She notes that the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is competing with Boards in all other areas of the province for provincial funding for new schools.

What’s up, doc???? The annual Snowflake Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Anglican Church at the corner of Stittsville Main Street and Carleton Cathcart Street in Stittsville. Crafts. Silent auction. Children’s area. Lunch available. Everyone welcome. Ottawa Public Health is holding a free

flu shot clinic on Wednesday, November 24 from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville. The annual Christmas Parade of Lights will be held in Stittsville on Saturday, November 27 starting at 7 p.m. and proceeding southward along Stittsville Main Street from the School Board Depot building.
