STUDENT

Award to Matt Parent Matt Parent is one of Eastern Ontario’s top student volunteers. The 17 year old grade 12 student at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville was one of five recipients of the Volunteer Youth Recognition Award 2010 sponsored by Investors Group Financial. A total of 30 students representing schools across Eastern Ontario were nominated for the award. The awards were formally presented on Tuesday, Oct. 26 by Nobel Prize nominee Craig Kielburger, founder of Free The Children, the world’s largest network of children helping children through education, and cofounder of Leaders Today, the world’s top youth leadership training organization. Assisting Mr. Kielburger at the awards ceremony were Investors Group regional directors Mary Lennox (Ottawa-Kanata) and Bill Evans

(Ottawa – Nepean). Each award winners also received a $500 contribution to the charity of their choice. For Matt, he was honoured just to be nominated for the award and felt that there were many other nominees who were worthy of winning. He was particularly impressed with Craig Kielburger’s message in his keynote address entitled “A Challenge for the Next Generation, a message that advised that a person does not have to do great things to share love in the world. “My major passion is reducing world poverty, Matt says, expressing an interested in humanitarian work and international development in the world. Indeed, he hopes to pursue conflict resolution or international studies when he goes on to university next year. He will be directing the $500 which accompanies the award either to a local charity which works interna-

tional or to the Grey Sisters in the Dominican Republic. Matt was nominated for the award for his volunteer work in the school and outside community. He participated last year in the school’s Dominican Republic experience in which students travel to the Dominican Republic where they help out, working with the poor. He was involved in fundraising activities leading up to the trip and in gathering medical and other supplies destined for the Dominican Republic. He also was a spokesperson, presenting the cause to a number of local groups and encouraging others to participate in the project. Matt was a leader for Think Fast which raised funds for development projects in Third World countries. He was also a leader for The Well, a youth spiritual retreat program which happens at Sacred Heart.

She has been a peer helper at the school, involved in all of that program’s activities. She also is a leader for The Well, the school’s youth spiritual retreat program. Claire was also a leader and instrumental in developing the Think Fast program at Sacred Heart. This is a fundraising initiative by the Canadian Catholic organization Development and Peace to raise funds for Third World countries. Claire also helps organize events at her local parish and sings in the choir. She has collected for the Snowsuit Fund and for the Youville Centre which helps single mothers and their children.

This is one of a series of such videos created by Navigator Communications depicting possible scenarios which require action by the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. Other videos have included one about a person falling overboard from a fishing boat and another about two boats colliding on the water. Mr. Durocher said that the “Fire On Board” video was challenging to make because it had to make it look like a boat was on fire even though a real fire could not happen. Use of a fog machine and creative shooting as well as use of a short clip of a boat really on fire in the distance resulted in a realistic portrayal of the on-water fire situation. What is just as amazing as the way that Mr. Durocher was able to portray an on-water boat fire where there really wasn’t one is the fact that he did it all in only half a day of shooting on the water in a New Brunswick bay. He is able to accommodate such tight shooting schedules partly because Navigator Communications provides a full service video production from concept to completion. So he not only plans the project and proposes the creative but he writes the script, coordinates the shooting, directs the scene, records the action and edits the finished product. As a result, he can accomplish a lot in half a day of shooting out on the water because he is intimately familiar with the project and knows exactly what needs to be done. The half day shooting was necessitated because Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers and boats were used and time was of the essence for these volunteers. This video and others shot for the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary are used by the organization for training purposes and also for fundraising and promotional purposes, showing the kinds of situations that the organization deals with on waters all across Canada. The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, which is headquartered in Gatineau, operates across Canada with the services of volunteers, who are much like volunteers with a volunteer fire department in that they do it as a service to their community and to help in emergency situations. Every region of Canada has a Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary presence, ranging from Newfoundland and the Maritimes where the volunteers are largely fishermen using their own boats to Quebec and Ontario where the volunteers use community vessels or personal pleasure craft to the Pacific area where there are a number of units. Mr. Durocher and Navigator Communications has been doing work for the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary for about 10 to 12 years now. “They like my work and they find it very good for them as well,” Mr. Durocher says, adding that the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, like any client, likes it when a video made for them wins a prestigious award like the MarCom Award. “They feel that it just gives more of a quality to the work that is being done – the recognition,” Mr. Durocher says. The award serves as acknowledgement that the client has received a quality product. This is not the first time that Mr. Durocher’s work for the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary has received international recognition. He received a MarCom Award in 2009 for a video training film and accompanying booklet dealing with a new management system that the Auxiliary was implementing. Although Mr. Durocher has done a lot of work for the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary shooting out on the water, his firm’s name “Navigator Communications” does not stem

from aquatic roots. Rather, when he launched Navigator Communications, he latched onto the term “Navigator” as a way of indicating that he could take a project and navigate or direct it, as it were, through all the stages of production, right to the finished product. Mr. Durocher points out that the MarCom Awards competition, which this year attracted nearly 5,000 entries from across North America and a number of other countries, does not rank entries against each other. Rather, entries are judged for their quality and creativity with only the most outstanding receiving either platinum or gold awards. Only about 15 percent of the entries attain the platinum level which is the top honour available in the competition. The MarCom Awards are acknowledged as being the international awards that recognize outstanding creative achievement by marketing and communication professionals. Entries come from corporate marketing and communication departments, advertising agencies, public relations firms, design shops, production companies and freelancers. The competition has grown to become perhaps the largest of its kind in the world. MarCom Awards are administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, an international organization that includes several thousand creative professionals. Judges are industry professionals who look for companies and individuals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. A MarCom Award signifies attention to detail and creative achievement. Judging takes place for several forms of media and communication efforts – marketing, publications, marketing/promotion, public service/pro bono, creativity and electronic/interactive. The Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals began in 1995 as a means to honour outstanding achievement and service to the communication profession. Navigator Communications of Stittsville has won over 20 international industry awards for its productions. The firm’s expertise in providing video and multi media production services includes development of organization profiles and overviews, public service announcements, training, dramatizations for corporate communications, music montage and video integration into multi media, live events, websites and You Tube. A full service video production firm, Navigator Communications works for private industry, non-profit groups and government in both Canada and abroad. Founder Sandy Durocher has been involved in all aspects of production for film, television, corporate video and live event management for 30 years and brings his insights and expertise to every Navigator project. Besides the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, other Navigator Communications clients include Transport Canada, the National Search and Rescue Secretariat, the Department of National Defence, Agriuclture and Agri-Food Canada and Provigo/Loeb. Mr. Durocher is annually involved in Stittsville’s Canada Day celebrations, volunteering to video the event and preparing a video of the previous year’s celebrations which are shown on a giant screen at the event. He has also volunteered his services in the community for such things as preparing a video on leadership for showing to Stittsville’s Girl Guides and videoing dramatic productions at A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary School.

Is it time for Business Improvement Areas? Both incumbent city of Ottawa councillor Shad Qadri of Stittsville and newly elected councillor Scott Moffatt of the Rideau-Goulbourn ward have similar challenges coming up, in our view. And for both the challenge is to establish a Business Improvement Area (BIA). For councillor Qadri, the BIA would be for Stittsville while for councillor Moffatt, the BIA would be for Richmond. Both communities are, in our view, experiencing challenges to their business communities which we think establishment of a BIA and development of an appropriate business development and promotion plan would overcome. The two challenges are quite different. For Stittsville, the commercial and retail sector is growing, with more and more businesses locating in the community. There are the new big box stores along Hazeldean Road; there is the new Timbermere shopping area development at the corner of Hazeldean Road and Carp Road; there are new businesses that will be locating in currently vacant space in several plazas; and there are businesses growing and relocating. In other words, the commercial/retail sector is growing, just like the community as a whole is growing. But with growth comes challenges. One challenge is how are existing smaller, owner-operated businesses to continue to compete again the new big box stores. Another challenge

LETTER

is how to retain the Stittsville image in a business community that is bound to attract more and more shoppers from Kanata and elsewhere. And an organization is needed that will, if necessary, be able to speak on behalf of the Stittsville business community to city hall and other outside agencies whose actions may impact business operations in the community. For Richmond, the challenge is somewhat different but no less urgent. Richmond is gaining more and more new housing, albeit on a much smaller scale than what is happening in Stittsville. But the community is growing and the business community has to be able to grow with it or else it will wither and die as residents will simply travel elsewhere, such as to Barrhaven or Stittsville or Kanata, for their shopping needs. A community without a vibrant business component is a community with one hand tied behind its back. It will never reach its full potential as a place to live, work and play. Richmond has a new Community Design Plan and one aspect of that plan is the revitalization of the downtown core area, the business area. But this can not be left solely to the forces of development to accomplish. There needs to be some local initiative, some local driving force that will promote existing businesses in the community and will encourage new ones to locate in Richmond.

TO EDITOR

A warm welcome

Editor: We have only lived here for three weeks and were unsure of what life would be like in Stittsville. We luckily found the little, well known Main Street Café to enjoy a good breakfast while we took a break from unpacking boxes. Everyone was very friendly but the best was yet to come. We saw a truck parked in the lot that advertized roofing and sky light installations, so, in idle chatter, we mentioned that we had a sky light which is something new for us. The friendly couple associated with the truck said feel free to call anytime and when we told them we were new to Stittsville, they welcomed us. As we went to pay our breakfast bill, we were told it was taken care of by Elke and Gail Jorgensen of the roofing firm and that they hoped we enjoyed living in Stittsville. Notwithstanding that growth is happening very rapidly in Stittsville, the community has still maintained its wonderful small town friendliness and we are proud to say we are excited about living here. A sincere thank you. Edna and Darryl MacKenzie Stittsville

First-ever Christmas concert SPECIAL TO THE NEWS In September, history was made with the formation of the Goulbourn Male Chorus. Now, this December, history will be made again as this new Goulbourn Male Chorus holds its first-ever Christmas concert. “Snack, Cider and Song”, a café style performance, will be presented by the Goul-

bourn Male Chorus on Sunday, Dec. 19 starting at 3 p.m. in the basement hall at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Stittsville. There will be two 20 minute performance sets of music, with a refreshment time in between. The event promises to feature not only lots of music but also snacks and hot apple cider. Everyone is welcome.

There are also some exciting things that could be done such as developing a focus on Richmond’s heritage so that it becomes a visitor destination a la Merrickville. But right now, the goal should be to establish a BIA and launch a modest program of business promotion and development. The problem with BIA’s is that there is a business specific tax levy which goes along with them. But all of these monies collected from businesses go directly to the work of the BIA which is promoting and developing local businesses. It is a way that collective action can accomplish things that individual action by business owners just cannot achieve. BIA’s are sprouting up all over the city. Barrhaven has one. Manotick has one. Westboro has one. And the list goes on and on. We know that establishing a BIA in Stittsville has been tried before and was unsuccessful. However, perhaps the impact of new big box stores right in the community will alter some minds and convince the business community that working together to promote local business is the way to go. In Richmond, a BIA has never been attempted but now is the time so that the Richmond business community can grow along with the residential component of the community and can develop to meet the needs of residents, allowing them to shop at home more and more.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF It’s a chance to learn something about businesses in the community. It’s a chance for businesses to promote themselves to community residents. It’s a chance to win a prize in a draw. And it’s all free. Talk about a good deal. But that’s what it is. And “it” is simply a Stittsville Community Business Showcase organized by the TD Canada Trust branch in Stittsville. They are usually held twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall and one of them was held on Wednesday, Oct. 27. “It’s basically an opportunity for our clients to connect with businesses in the area,” said Geoffrey Smith, a financial services rep at the Stittsville branch. “Everyone wins,” he added – clients get promotional material and information

from local businesses; the businesses get to publicize their presence and services in the community at no charge; and TD Canada Trust clients have an opportunity to win prizes in a draw held in conjunction with the event. The prizes in the draw, which took place at the end of the day and involved all those who filled out a ballot at the Stittsville Community Business Showcase table set up inside the branch, included a family pass to Saunders Farm at Munster, a free car wash from Petro Canada, a gift certificate for Jo-Jo’s Pizza and a reusable air filter from Advanced Air Quality. Petro Canada also provided free coffee for the event. Loot bags containing promotional materials and information from various local businesses were available to all TD Canada Trust clients who visited the branch on Oct. 27. These loot bags included a meal

guide from M& M Meats, a brochure and pen from Stittsville Main Street Physiotherapy, a brochure from Advanced Air Quality, a list of services from Nail Art, a menu from Jo-Jo’s Pizza, a brochure outlining the Australian Gold Laser Spraytans Systems, a brochure from Willy’s Pizza, a brochure from the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville, a sticky pad to hold a phone on the dash of a vehicle provided by Dennis Tarrant and Frank Fragomeni of Coldwell Banker First Ottawa Realty, and business cards from Karma Hair Studio, lawyers Tennant Jackson Peters LLP and Captain Sandy’s Cruise Holidays (Carole Paleczny, president). Any business in the Stittsville area can get involved with these Stittsville Community Business Showcases held at the TD Canada Trust branch semi-annually simply by getting hold of Geoffrey Smith at the branch at 613-831-8700, ext. 222.

Could This Drugless Treatment Be Your Headache Solution Too? Numerous studies have shown the benefits of spinal adjustments with headache patients.

The Boline Study This study compared two groups of headache patients, half went for chiropractic adjustments, the other half took amitriptyline, a medication often prescribed for the treatment of severe tension headache pain. After six weeks, researchers found that chiropractic patients experienced almost no side effects. And only the chiropractic patients continued to report fewer headaches when treatment ended.

The Duke Study Medical experts concluded that spinal manipulations resulted in almost immediate improvement for headaches. Patients also had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of headaches than a commonly prescribed medication.

Munster were carved from scratch right there in the school gymnasium. And while the pumpkin carving by families who had paid five dollars to participate was going on, so too was an ice cream buffet, with everyone – band members and audience members – loading up their dishes with lots of ice cream and an assortment of toppings. It was the Goulbourn Middle School band’s first performance of the season, with band members dressed up in Halloween costumes, including teacher/director Linda Crawford who directed wearing a witch’s costume. In the band were a raggedy Anne, a cow, a bee, a hockey player and more. And costumes were not restricted to the band. The audience, numbering about 120, included a convict, a Middle Ages crusader, a pirate, a witch or two and even a hot dog. And it was not hard to get into the Halloween spirit, not only because of the costumes and the lineup of pumpkins at the rear of the gymnasium but because of the program of appropriate music along with a Halloween poem and a rendition of a Shakespearean witches’ scene. Costumed band members Brandon Bowes and Shelly Cao served as the MC’s for the concert, a duo that performed well together once a stool was produced to bring the shorter Shelly up to Brandon’s height. “Creepy Crawlies” led off the program, with the efforts of a band member to kill a fly bringing laughter to the gathering.

This was followed up by a most appropriate selection called “Tunes That Go Bump In The Night.” Then students Jenna Bjornson, dressed up as a ghost complete with a red tie and glasses, and Ross Morgan presented a poem called “Twas the Night Before Halloween”, a paraody of the famous Christmas poetic tale of just about the same name. After another appropriately spooky musical number, “Dark Adventure,” a Shakespearean scene was enacted by students Shyvonne Roxborough, Kendall Ryan and Jessica Sprague, all dressed up as witches who were reciting a scene from MacBeth while surrounding a black cauldron. Two musical selections, “Hedwig’s Theme” showcasing the musical talents of four band members, namely Hannah Rehman on alto sax, Brianna Allard on clarinet and Shelly Cao and Ying Lin on flutes, and the finale “Night On Bald Mountain” completed the concert program. After prizes were awarded to those in the band judged to have the best costumes in a variety of categories, it was on to the pumpkin carving where knives and spoons were used by the participating carvers, sometimes parents, sometimes band members, sometimes family members, to create jack ‘o lanterns out of the pumpkins. There were garbage cans aplenty stationed around the carving tables to receive the pumpkin’s less than beautiful insides and seeds, as well as the carved out sections.

Stittsville duo in ‘Red Riding Hood’ DIANNE GREEN SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Two youth from Stittsville will be performing in the upcoming production of “Red Riding Hood” by the Lakeside Players in Ottawa. Emily Green, 9, and her brother Carter Green, who is 7, will both be part of the children’s chorus for this play which is being done in panto style. This is a British theatre tradition that sees the audience encouraged to cheer for the good guy, boo at the bad guy and even sing along. In this play “Red Riding Hood,” adults will enjoy the double entendre, crossing dressing actors and humour. Children will be enthralled by the slapstick chases, larger than life animals and general buffoonery. For Emily Green, this will be her second production with the Lakeside Players. She loves to perform and has been asking her mother Dianne Green to put her on TV since she was three years old. She even talks about auditioning for Canadian Idol some day. Emily uses any opportunity to perform, be it singing, acting, playing the piano (she started taking lessons when she was three) or cheerleading as she is a member of the youth team for the Capital City Storm cheerleading squad. She loved her experience with the Lakeside Players last year and so is back again this year. She enjoys the singing, acting and the camaraderie that comes with making new friends with the other children in the chorus. She also enjoys dressing up and assuming the role of a character. For her brother Carter, this is his first year with the Lakeside Players. But he is certainly familiar with the group and indeed last year, after an early reluctance even to attend the production, became a big fan of the group. Last year he reluctantly went along with his family to watch his sister Emily in the show. He did not want to go, thinking that it would be boring. But very soon he had left his seat and headed to the mat right in front of the stage where children are allowed to sit.

37th Annual Craft

He soon was vigorously booing and cheering the villains and heroes along with the rest of the audience. His mother had to return the next night to help out with makeup and hair for the children’s chorus. Carter begged to go along as he wanted to see the show again. So, Carter again watched the whole show while his mother was helping out with the makeup and hair for the actors. Indeed, Carter ended up attending all of the remaining shows and so you can imagine his excitement this year to actually be part of the children’s chorus. He has returned home from every rehearsal laughing and imitating the funny lines and actions of the play’s “dame,” a man who plays a woman. Lakeside Players is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year as a community theatre company. “Red Riding Hood” in panto style will be performed by the Lakeside Players, including Emily and Carter Green of Stittsville, at the Ron Kilbus Centre at Britannia from Thursday, Nov. 11 through Sunday, Nov. 14. Tickets at $5 for children, $8 for seniors and students and $10 for adults can be purchased at www.lakesideplayers.com or by calling 613-667-2224.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Hundreds of participants, good weather, close to $15,000 raised – the first annual 9 RUN RUN in Stittsville on Saturday, Oct. 23 was a fabulous success. Formally known as Ottawa’s first annual Emergency Services’ Event, 9 RUN RUN saw a total of 885 participants register to “Support The Services That Support Us” and to raise funds for Project s.t.e.p., a substance abuse program for youth. Of the 885 participants, 565 ran in the half marathon while 320 took part in the 3K Family Fun Run/Walk. A total of 45 police officers actually participated in one of the runs while 18 firefighters did so as well, including firefighters from Cantley, Quebec and Perth. In addition, 27 paramedics took part in

rector for the race. Rural sector fire chief Terry Gervais make the chilli served at the event while fire chief Chris Burke helped out with the distribution of medals and with the chilli cookoff competition. The success of this year’s first ever 9 RUN RUN means that the event will continue at the same time of year and in Stittsville. Organizers believe, based on the numerous accolades from participants generated by this year’s inaugural event, that next year’s event will be even bigger. The organizer had hoped to raise $10,000 with this year’s event and it looks like the final figure will be closer to $15,000, all of which is going to Project s.t.e.p. which is a response to youth addiction in the city of Ottawa. One component of Project s.t.e.p. is the provision of a 24/7 residential treatment facility for youth suffering from substance abuse. This has not been present locally up until now. Project s.t.e.p. also has educational and prevention components. City of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri was really the originator of this 9 RUN RUN event. After speaking with Ottawa Police Services chief Vern White about running, Project s.t.e.p. and chief White’s goal to run a dozen half marathons in a year, councillor Qadri pursued organizing a running event in Stittsville. A 9 RUN RUN committee was started, with karen von Jagow, Andrea Maclean, Eva Burnet, Anne Paliwal, Monica Van Dam and Brenda Tirrell as members. This organizing committee grew to include Terry Mesdag, Ross Tirrell and George von Jagow. “At the time we really had no idea that it was going to be so successful and it’s all due to the tremendous support from the three services, the Stittsville community and the volunteers,” race director Brenda Tirrell commented in her wrap up comments about the event.

Nicolas Ruszkowski VP, Communications Ottawa Hospital We all know someone who has been touched by cancer. My “someone”, my best friend Christelle, passed away in France seventeen years ago. She was eighteen. Christelle was booked for surgery immediately after her brain cancer was detected. Complications from surgery led to paralysis. Then came radiation, with painful skin problems and fatigue. Finally, chemotherapy: nausea, immune deficiency, hair loss. Today, there is new hope. The doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers and psychologists who help our patients battle cancer are finding a better way. This fall, The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre unveiled Eastern Ontario’s first CyberKnife. Cyber-what? CyberKnife is the world’s only robotic radio-surgery system. In other words, it performs radiation therapy with precision and effectiveness of surgery. This allows doctors to get at otherwise inoperable tumors without any incision, pain or discomfort to patients. Krista Kowalchuk, our first CyberKnife patient, underwent the first of three one-hour treatments with her doctors, neurosurgeon John Sinclair and

We have big plans for the growth of our building. Many of you know that we are planning to add to and improve our current building to make it accessible to all. As part of that effort we have had several events to raise funds for our project over the years and this past one is no exception. In June we hosted a time and talent auction with the support of this community and raised over $6,500.00. This was made possible by the generous donations of many of the businesses and people of this community.

radiation oncologist Jason Pantarotto, to treat two tumors located on her spine. Before CyberKnife, Krista’s only options were brain surgery (she has had 5 to remove other tumors) or five-week courses of daily radiation treatment that could damage not only her tumors, but healthy tissue as well. Today, she needs no anesthetic before her procedure, experiences only slight soreness on the spot where she has been treated, and spends less time in hospital. CyberKnife is especially effective against brain, lung, prostate, spinal, liver, pancreatic and kidney cancers. While it is not “the cure”, it does help ensure that patients like Krista get more compassionate, effective, and timely care. Christelle would approve. Artist Shelley Irving on Studio Tour JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Stittsville artist Shelley Irving grew up with a pencil in her hand and a creative family around her. So it should be no surprise that she turned to painting when she closed down her interior design business and had some time on her hands. She started painting a lot and taking classes, joining the Ottawa West Arts Association. And then last June she was asked if she wanted to be part of this year’s Stittsville Artists Studio Tour which is happening this coming weekend. She agreed and since then she has been working at getting ready for the event. Artist with her art “It’s been fun and it’s been a journey,” JOHN CURRY PHOTO Shelley says, noting that she has recently Stittsville artist Shelley Irving is beside one of her paintings discovered metallic paints and will have at her home at 44 Stonepath Crescent in Stittsville. Her several pieces on display in the studio home studio will be one of those on this weekend’s tour done with these paints. Stittsville Artists Studio Tour. She says that she starts off a piece with

an idea, admitting that sometimes the idea works and sometimes it doesn’t. But when that “eureka” moment happens, then the art takes shape. Although she has now returned to the work force, Shelley still concentrates on her art, finding it frees her from the stress of the job. “I make time for it because it is just pure enjoyment,” she says. “I think painting allows you to be free, like a kid,” she says, adding that her painting is anything but photo realism. “I like variety and I like spontaneity,” Shelley says, describing her style as a combination of impressionism and abstract. She says that if an idea for a painting is not happening for her, she simply sets it aside and returns to it sometime in the future. She admits to being something of a perfectionist, probably as a result of her work as an interior designer. As a result, paintings sometime take a

while for her to finish. “I do fuss over it,” she says. When she paints, she likes to have a lot of light, a circumstance which is helped by the large windows which she has at the rear of her Stonepath Crescent home in Stittsville. Shelley is looking forward to the Studio Tour, the first in which she has been involved. She hopes to be able to tell visitors something that will help them grow their appreciation of art. She personally feels that art should be important in people’s lives and hopes that many will take part in the Studio Tour, stopping in and looking at the art and enjoying it. The Stittsville Artists Studio Tour is happening this Saturday, Nov. 6 and Sunday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Shelley Irving’s home studio is located at 44 Stonepath Crescent in Stittsville which can be reached off West Ridge Drive south of Hazeldean Road. 401557

City of Ottawa Councillor Reports By Shad Qadri, Councillor Ward Six Stittsville City of Ottawa Thank you to everyone who exercised his or her right to vote regardless of choice. I especially extend my sincerest appreciation to all those who have placed their confidence in me. It is my distinct honour to represent the citizens of our community as your Councillor for Stittsville, Ward 6 and your voice in City Hall. My heartfelt thanks and appreciation go out to the many, many wonderful people who contributed to my successful campaign. The tireless efforts of dedicated residents, family and friends certainly helped to ensure my success on October 25th. With commitment and dedication, I look forward to working closely with all of you in charting a progressive, positive and successful course for Stittsville over the next four years! West end flood mitigation measures In the summer of 2009, the City experienced a significant rainstorm that resulted in over 1500 flooded basements mostly in the west end, namely Kanata and Stittsville. Many of these neighbourhoods were built at a time when dual drainage principles were not yet developed. Surface drainage enters the storm sewer through catch basins and perforated maintenance hole covers without flow restriction. As a result, storm sewers are prone to surcharge during high intensity storm events, and extraneous flow can also enter the sanitary sewer system via vented maintenance-hole covers. Therefore, in order to prevent future flooding from occurring, it was determined that flood control measures need to be installed in these areas. The City of Ottawa has retained Multi Drain Incorporated to undertake the work associated with the flood mitigation contract in these areas. Staff from Multi Drain will

Thank you for your support be on site cleaning out City catchbasin structures and installing inlet control devices in order to prevent against future flooding. Construction is expected to begin in early November 2010, with a hope to be completed in late December 2010, depending on winter weather conditions. The City of Ottawa and Multi Drain Incorporated are working on a vigorous schedule and are making every effort to have this work completed in the 2010 season. If you have any questions regarding this contract, please feel free to contact Tara Blasioli, Project Manager with the City’s Design & Construction Municipal West, Infrastructure Services Department at Phone: 613-580-2424, ext. 23970 or by email at Tara.Blasioli@ottawa.ca or Kelly Lalonde Project Manager with Robinson Consultants In At 613-592-6060, ext. 141 or by e-mail at: klalonde@rcii.com. Congratulations to the winners of the Hazeldean public Art Competition I would like to offer my congratulations to artist Jennifer Stead and the artist teams of Linda Cronin and Eric Chan, and Alisdair MacRae and Negar Seyfollahy for being named the winners of the Hazeldean Public Art Competition. I had a chance to meet all of the artists during a public open house in September and I must say, it was a very tough decision for the selection committee. All of the works that were submitted were very impressive and could have all boosted the look and feel of Hazeldean Road once the widening project is complete I would like to acknowledge all the artists that submitted designs and thank everyone for participating in the competition. Remembrance Day schedule changes I want to remind residents of the following schedule changes for Remembrance Day.

Ottawa City Hall and all six Client Service Centres will be closed on Remembrance Day. Business will resume as usual on November 12. The City’s 311 Contact Centre will be open for urgent matters requiring the City’s immediate attention. Call 311 or 613580-2400 to speak to a customer service representative. Recycling, garbage, and multi-residential container collection will take place on its regularly scheduled day on Remembrance Day with no changes to the collection schedule. OC Transpo will operate a revised weekday schedule with minor reductions on November 11. Service is free on November 11 for veterans wearing their uniform or medals. For more information, visit www. octranspo.com. All pools, arenas and fitness centres will be open on Remembrance Day for public swimming, skating and fitness classes and following regular schedules. Most registered programs at swimming pools, community centres and arenas will be offered on Remembrance Day. Please check with www.ottawa.ca or the facility of your choice for details. All branches of the Ottawa Public Library are closed on Remembrance Day and there will be no bookmobile service. Regular branch hours and bookmobile service will resume on November 12. Lest we forget. 9 Run Run – a great success On October 23, the Stittsville community hosted its inaugural 9 Run Run event and I would like to say thank you to all the residents who came out and either walked, jogged or ran in support of Ottawa’s emergency services. The turnout was absolutely fantastic and I

am thrilled that plans are in works to make the 9 Run Run an annual event. I would like to congratulate Brenda Tirrell for organizing this wonderful event and would like to also thank Ottawa Fire Chief John deHooge, Ottawa Police Chief Vernon White and Anthony Di Monte, Chief of the Ottawa Paramedic Service, for their encouragement and support for the 9 Run Run. I would also like to say thank you to Ottawa radio personality Mark Sutcliffe for his participation in the event and Kurt Stoodley of Ottawa’s A Morning Show for his work as the MC. The event was to honour our emergency services and they showed great sportsmanship, especially during the Chiefs’ Chili Cookoff. Even though the paramedics won that contest, it became a win win for everyone because there was lots of delicious chili to enjoy. The first annual 9 Run Run event was a memorable and enjoyable day for everyone and I am looking forward to seeing all of you when we have our second annual 9 Run Run next year. Thank you again for all your support. Always listening and acting on your concerns As your Councillor, I always welcome your keen input and ideas on how we can improve Stittsville. Please contact our office anytime by phone at 613-580-2476 or by e-mail at Shad. Qadri@ottawa.ca. My ward office is located in the Goulbourn Recreation Complex, located at 1500 Shea Road. The hours of operation for the summer are Mondays 9-2pm, Wednesdays 3-8pm, Fridays 9-5pm, and Saturdays 91pm. Please do not hesitate to pay us a visit.

Stephany Castilla’s art benefits from New Year’s resolution New Year’s resolutions are famous for being made in good faith and then being promptly broken. But for Stittsville artist Stephany Castilla, one New Year’s resolution this year led to more focus on her painting. This in turn led to her selection as one of the nine artists who will be participating

in this weekend’s Stittsville Artists Studio Tour. Stephany had learned the fundamentals of art while attending the former High School of Commerce in Ottawa and although she went on to pursue a career in graphic design, she had always painted for herself and her family. But this year she made a New Year’s resolution to spend more time on her art and be-

come more involved with the Ottawa West Arts Association. This led to her selection for the Stittsville Artists Studio Tour as well as a renewed commitment to her art. “Painting is like exercise – you have to keep at it,” she says, noting that she will be showing about 15 pieces at her home on the Studio Tour. For years, Stephany was a watercolour painter but this year she discovered acrylics, a medium that she feels gives her the spontaneity in her art that she likes. Watercolour painting requires a lot of planning whereas painting with acrylics allows a more loose approach to the work. And one thing that Stephany does to try to keep her work spontaneous is that she paints for only half an hour at a time. Indeed, if she finds that she is getting too detailed in her work, she simply walks away from that session. “I try to capture a moment in time,” she says about her painting, commenting that her inspiration is usually drawn from one particular colour such as a strong yellow which she might have seen while walking

her dog. She does landscapes, still life and figure drawing and sometimes has a couple of pieces on the go at one time, with some put aside until the spark of inspiration hits again and she resumes working on it. She says that she usually has to be in a good mood when she paints and notes that an artist can improve muscle memory simply by doing more work. She is also an advocate of learning from your mistakes, saying an artist can benefit by understanding what went wrong with a certain piece. Stephany is looking forward to this coming weekend and participating in her first Stittsville Artists Studio Tour, although she is not sure exactly what to expect. However, she is looking forward to talking with people and just sharing her art with them. The Stittsville Artists Studio Tour will take place this Saturday, Nov. 6 and Sunday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Stephany Castilla and her work will be at 23 Cinnabar Way in the Granite Ridge subdivision in Stittsville. Cinnabar Way runs off Granite Ridge Drive near Stittsville Public School.

The seventh annual Stittsville Artists Studio Tour is set to go this weekend . Nine Stittsville artists will be involved in this year’s event. Studios will be open to show the work of the artists, providing the public with the opportunity not only to see and perhaps purchase some of the original artwork but also to meet the artists themselves. This year’s Stittsville Studio Tour will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6 and Sunday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on

both days. The participating artists will be Shelley Irving at 44 Stonepath Crescent; Ana Maria Rutenberg and Sylvie Sabourin, together at 27 Sable Run Drive; Daniel MoralesGomez at 26 Trailway Circle; Stephany Castilla at 23 Cinnabar Way; Bernie Wills at 7 Plainfield Court; Vera Van Baaren at 11 Plainfield Court; Terry Sarchuk at 8a Sweetnam Drive; and Tracy Lewis at 1750 Maple Grove Road.

This has resulted in a series on “joy” and a series on “compassion.” She says that everyone sees something different in these paintings and she is quite amazed at what people do see in her work. Terry usually completes a painting in one sitting, although this could last a couple of hours or a full day. She does her work at an out-of-house studio located in an office building on Sweetnam Drive just south of Hazeldean Road in Stittsville. She likes it because she can work in her studio uninterrupted. JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Terry Sarchuk of Stittsville had never painted in her life before her retirement from the federal public service in the year 2000. But then she took some watercolour painting classes and her career as an artist started. She started in watercolours and still does do some watercolour work but she now prefers to paint with water soluble oils. When she began, she painted flowers and landscapes but then she started to do abstracts which is her main focus now. “It really appealed to me,” Terry says, explaining that she now paints intuitively with no real plan, just allowing the paintings to flow. “The thing I like about it is I don’t know

Q

How can I winterize my car?

Q

A

Firstly, make sure you have decent winter tires. Allseasons will work, but winter tires perform better even with dry roads. Wipers are very important, companies produce coated versions for winter. Batteries should be checked for proper charge, and your anti-freeze should be checked for freezing temperature. Lastly make sure it’s kept clean. Road salt can corrode any bare meal very quickly if left untouched.

Why is it important to avoid premature loss of baby teeth? Primary teeth first of all help your child digest probably and have normal development of his/her digestive tract. Primary teeth also hold the spot for the adult tooth to come. If a primary tooth is lost too soon it slows the development of the adult tooth. The neighboring teeth will shift into the missing tooth’s position blocking the growth of the adult tooth, causing a misaligned bite needing orthodontics in the future or causing jaw joint pain. nity to develop friendships within the group but also provides an opportunity for community involvement through performances. Handbells allow individuals who have not used their musical talents for some time to revive these talents. Although playing the handbells requires a basic understanding of music notation and counting rhythms, a person does not need to be an advanced music reader to ring the bells. In this new handbell choir, members will be responsible to play one or two notes on a staff of music and to become familiar with handbell notation. This is like asking all of the players to sit on a piano bench with each one playing their one or two assigned notes on the piano. Being a handbell ringer revolves around teamwork. At the weekly rehearsals, each player will learn to ring

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Bells ring for many reasons. School bells ring to indicate the start of classes. Bells ring to indicate that there is someone at the door. Bells ring in a church steeple to call people to church. And bells ring to create music. That is just what the new St. Andrew’s Community Handbell Choir will be doing and you can be a part of it. Anyone in the community is welcome to join this new musical group which will be using a two octave set of Schulmerich handbells which St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church owns. Robert Dueck, who worships at St. Andrew’s and who is the director of the newly formed Goulbourn Male Chorus, approached the church with a request to use the bells to help launch a St. Andrew’s Community Handbell Choir for Stittsville and area. The church heartily welcomed this suggestion and is fully supporting this new endeavour, viewing the bells as an opportunity to partner music involvement with church and the greater community. Playing in a handbell choir can be a fun and rewarding experience as it not only provides an opportu-

Stittsville Royals

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The Stittsville Royals came close to the win column in Arnprior on Friday, Oct. 15. The Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League game was tied 3-3 after two periods but Arnprior rallied for two goals in the third period to win by a 5-4 score. Scott Barnes, Dave Borden, Brendan Cruz and Matt Kadolph scored for the Royals in this game. Assists went to Scott Barnes, Dave Borden and Steve Genier. Royals’ goalie Andrew Rodier made 25 saves in the game. The Royals are currently in fifth place in the sixteam Valley Division of the league, with 4 wins and 11 losses in 15 games. The Arnprior Packers are in first place. The Stittsville Royals will host the Renfrew Timberwolves this Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m. at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville.

Huskies lose to visiting Saints JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The Sacred Heart High School Huskies lost their second straight game and third overall this season on Friday, Oct. 29 in Stittsville. The Huskies dropped a 23-0 decision to the visiting Immaculata High School Saints in a game played in overcast, chilly and windy conditions. The Huskies, with the wind at their backs, had a strong first quarter, marching down the field in the early going thanks to a couple of sizeable runs by running back Alex Demidenko. But the drive stalled and an ensuing field goal from the 28 yard line was partially blocked, result-

ing in no points. The game was 0-0 after the first quarter but a 62 yard run for a touchdown by the Immaculata quarterback to start off the second quarter put the visitors ahead 60 and then 7-0 with the convert. It was then 8-0 as Immaculata, kicking with the wind, scored a single on the ensuing kickoff. The Huskies offense did move the ball down the field, into the wind, in the latter part of the second quarter but an injury to running back Alex Demidenko in which he had to be carried off the field seemed to take the drive. When Immaculata took over the ball with less than two minutes to go in the quarter, a long 70 yard touch-

down play made it 14-0. The convert added another point to make it 15-0 for Immaculata at half time. Immaculata added another eight points in the second half to win the game 23-0. This was the Huskies third loss of the six game season, with the team also having three victories. Immaculata, which is in the east division of the league, has finished the regular season with a record of four wins and two losses. During the regular season, Sacred Heart has scored 44 points while allowing 58 points. Immaculata, meanwhile, has scored 92 points while allowing 75 points.

DAN PLOUFFE NEWS STAFF For Kyle McCleery of South Carleton High School, it wasn’t difficult to find the silver lining in his second-place finish at the Thursday, Oct. 28 national capital cross-country running championships. Not only did McCleery book a trip to the OFSAA provincial finals this Saturday, Nov. 6 in Etobicoke, he also ran a strong individual race against tough competitors en route to his silver medal wins. “I’m used to having Mickey beat me,” explained McCleery, who finished around 7.5 seconds behind Holy Trinity’s Mickey Day in a time of 22 minutes, 3.66 seconds in the six-kilometre junior boys’ event. “He’s a tough guy to beat, but maybe some day, hopefully some time soon.” McCleary’s South Carleton Storm also earned a second-place result in the junior boys’ team competition as Robert Dysart, Erik Olsen, Sean Lewis and Ryan Labelle qualified for OFSAA as well. Bolstered by two midget-aged runners who were called up to boost the junior squad, the Storm nearly knocked off last year’s city champions, falling by a close 47 to 50 point total to Louis-Riel, which is across the street from the site of the city championships at the Hornets Nest in Blackburn Hamlet. “We have a pretty strong team,” added McCleery, who encouraged Dysart and Olsen, along with Lewis and Labelle, to push one another since the pairs are closely matched in ability. “When they race each other, then they usually post a better result.” McCleery, who joined the Ottawa Lions club this past summer, would like to improve on his individual performance from last year’s OFSAA when he finished 20th.

that made it 14-0. This was the score at half time. The second half saw St. Mark score another 20 points to record a 34-0 win. This was St. Mark’s third win of the season against three losses while the South Carleton Storm have finished the regular season with a record of five losses and a tie. St. Mark scored 100 points during the six game regular season, 70 of which were scored in the two games against the SC Storm. In high school junior football league action on Tuesday, Oct. 26, the SC Storm lost 28-12 to the Sir Wilfrid Laurier High School squad in a game played at Sir Wilfrid Laurier. South Carleton has yet to win in five games so far this season in junior football action while this victory by Sir Wilfrid Laurier over South Carleton was that team’s first victory of the season so far.

JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF The South Carleton High School Storm senior football team both opened and closed its regular season against the St. Mark High School Lions this season. And both games ended up with very similar results. The opening game of the season on Sept. 24, played at St. Mark in Manotick, ended up as a 36-0 victory for the home team. And last Friday afternoon’s final game of the season, played at South Carleton in Richmond, saw the game end with a 34-0 victory for the visiting St. Mark squad. It was 11-0 for St. Mark after the first quarter of the game which was played in cloudy conditions and a stiff breeze blowing south across the field. In the second quarter, the Storm had the wind at their backs but it was St. Mark which did the only scoring of the quarter, a field goal

The Huskies have scored 337 points, third best in the league, but have allowed 386 points which is the worst in the league. The Huskies open the season with three straight losses, to South Carleton, Colonel By and Glebe. After a 45-37 win over St. Joseph High School, the Huskies then went through another three straight losses, to All Saints, Nepean and Louis Riel. The loss to Nepean was by the slimmest of margins, one point (56-55). The Huskies got things going the right way in their last game, a 51-34 victory over St. Patrick High School. The South Carleton High School Storm, meanwhile, are among the top teams in the league, residing in third place with a record of five wins and three losses. Stittsville News - NOVEMBER 04, 2010

Chance meeting leads to joint visit to Vimy KAREN GAUTHIER SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Playing minor hockey together in Stittsville. Great. Travelling with the family in France. Awesome. Meeting each other purely by chance at a Paris train station while journeying to see the Vimy Ridge Memorial. Priceless. But strange and oddly coincidental that this may seem, that is exactly what happened to two ten year old boys from Stittsville this past summer. Matthieu Gauthier and John Milne, both of Stittsville, met by chance at a Paris train station waiting to go to the Vimy Ridge Memorial with their families. They had played hockey together for Stittsville teams but had no idea they would be there together in Paris that day, travelling to see the Vimy Ridge Memorial. It was pure coincidence that they found each other at that train station. Both families were surprised to meet each other, Stittsville residents so far from home. It was, indeed, an unusual surprise for these two Stittsville boys who had gone to Paris last summer with their families and were setting out on family visits to the Canadian National Vimy Memorial site in France. Both boys have fathers in the Canadian Army and Matthieu Gauthier’s great-great grandmother Edna Earl was present at the commemoration of the

monument after World War One. While waiting to board a high speed train from Paris to Arras, which is about eight kilometers from the Vimy Memorial, Matthieu Gauthier, who attends Jean-Paul II Elementary Catholic School in Stittsville, and John Milne, who goes to A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary School in Stittsville, found each other in the massive crowd of travelers at Paris’ Gare du Nord train station. It was by pure chance that these two boys, who played hockey on the same team last season, met again at this Paris train station, recognizing each other in the crowd. It was by pure coincidence that the Gauthier family, consisting of Major Paul Gauthoier of the Royal Canadian Regiment of Petawawa, who served in Afghanistan in 2006 and 2007, his wife Karen and Matthieu’s older sister Marielle, 15, were going to board the exact same train as John Milne’s parents, Brigadier General Jay Milne, who served in Afghanistan in 2009, and his wife Barb. Both families reside in Stittsville but had no knowledge that the other would be there at that Paris train station on that particular day. So, these two boys from Stittsville got to experience together a visit to the place where many believe that Canada first became a true nation.

After checking into the visitor centre at the Vimy Ridge 250 acre battlefield park, the boys took a tour of the battlefield, seeing the wartime trenches and viewing the craters and honeycombed grounds of the site. They got to walk deep underground and be chilled by the cold temperature there to see the tunnels and the conditions which soldiers had to endure. Afterwards, the Gauthier and Milne families walked together up to the tall white Vimy Memorial itself, just like thousands have done before them. However, on this particular day, they were the only families there. Each family took turns taking photos under the 30 metre high twin pylons of the Vimy Monument, pylons that represent the partners in arms of Canada and France. Eventually the two boys began constructing their own little monument to Canadian soldiers, using small stones. Matthieu made a heart with a cross inside it from the pebbles which he found. “it’s for my great grandpa Snider,” he said. His great grandfather Earl Snider was an infantry soldier with the Stormont Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders of Canada who landed in Normandy on June 6, 1945 and fought through to the end of World War Two despite being seriously wounded a number

of times. Inscribed not far from where the boys created their own tiny memorials, on the outside wall of the monument, are the names of the 11,285 Canadians killed in France in World War One and whose final resting place is unknown. The boys spent some time studying these inscribed names. Leaving the Vimy Memorial, the two families took cabs from the visitor centre into the town of

Arras, ate at a local pub together and also toured the main town square on foot. These two young Stittsville boys were able to walk through the streets near the grand cathedral of this town which had been overrun with soldiers many years before. Many of the town’s old buildings have been restored in the years since the war. CHANCE MEETING, SEE 33

CHANCE MEETING, FROM 32

The trip ended with the boys walking to the train station together and boarding a train back to Paris. Uncertain of when they would see each other again, they said their goodbyes. Now back in Stittsville, they have seen each other on the ice at hockey games. Matthieu plays defence for the Stittsville Atom A2 team, the Red Hawks, while John is the goalie for the Stittsville Rams Atom B3 team, the Knights. Mattheiu has also participated this year in the poppy campaign of the Stittsville branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Matthieu and John will be observing November 11th, Remembrance Day, this year with a new appreciation and understanding of what Canadian soldiers have done for Canada. They have seen with their own eyes the monument that in its carvings makes reference to the poem “In Flanders fields” by John McCrae, a poem which all Canadian children learn in school and recite on Remembrance Day. The Vimy Memorial is the centerpiece of the battlefield park and commemorates the military assaults during the Battle of Vimy Ridge which was the first time in which all four Canadian divisions participated in a battle together as a cohesive formation. The Canadian soldiers accomplished in KAREN GAUTHIER PHOTO a morning what Matthieu Gauthier of Stittsville makes a heart with a cross inside it from the British and pebbles that he found beside the Vimy Memorial in France.

Stittsville News - NOVEMBER 04, 2010

French armies had not been able to achieve 33 in months of fighting. The Vimy Memorial also became the place where Stittsville was suddenly represented by two young hockey teammates, with the boys experiencing together what Vimy means to so many Canadians, namely a place that while witnessing many deaths and sacrifices also was the place where Canada is deemed to have become a nation of its own. From the monument, it is possible to see far along the rising escarpment on the edge of the Douai Plains. One special carving display named “The Spirit of Sacrifice”, which is located between the two main pylons, shows a young dying solider gazing upward, having thrown his torch to a comrade in an effort to keep alive the memory of the war dead. And it was here, at the Vimy Memorial, that these two Stittsville youths, who met passing hockey pucks around Stittsville rinks, began their own journey of catching the torch and keeping the memory alive. And it all happened by chance.

THE BEST, FROM 31

Stittsville News - NOVEMBER 04, 2010

The branch’s immediate past president Mavis Lewis, who had attended the District “G” fall convention where the awards were announced, had hidden all of the award trophies and plaques behind the hall’s stage curtain, out of sight of those at the meeting including Wendy who was seated at a table at the front of the hall since she serves as the branch secretary as well and was taking the minutes of the meeting. Beginning with the certificate of excellence and ending with the giant Len Taylor Trophy for overall bulletin contest winner in the province, Mavis trotted out one award after the other, much to the surprise and amazement of Wendy Ryan. Later, in the meeting, it was revealed that thanks to the work of Wendy, the Richmond

Legion now has a website, www.RichmondLegion.ca which includes a history of the branch, a calendar of events, a memorial section and photo galleries. The branch bulletin will also be on the website. Since its recent launch, the website has received about 350 hits so far. What is interesting is that thanks to postage and printing cost savings since some Legion members will now download the bulletin off the website, the branch will now have both a printed bulletin and a website for less monthly cost than what the publication of the bulletin alone was costing. The Richmond Legion will also be selling ads for its website which may bring in additional revenue. All of this was done after Wendy Ryan attended a seminar on website development.
