Hit truck, run away SPECIAL TO THE NEWS A Christmas crash would not be on anyone’s Santa list. So, it is not only what happened but when it happened, just days before Christmas, that makes a recent “hit and run incident on Coyote Crescent in Stittsville so devastating. Sometime between the hours of 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 21 and 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22, just a couple of days before Christmas, a vehicle travelling westbound on the southern portion of Coyote Crescent went out of control. It went up onto a lawn and then struck a silver/grey half tone pickup truck parked in a driveway. There are reports from neighbours that this might have happened sometime around 11 p.m. It was not a slight crash. The pickup truck was moved two feet sideways from the JOHN CURRY PHOTO impact as it suffered damage Olivia Bradley, centre, is joined by Brooke Galloway, left, and Laura Harvey, right, in the musical theatre routine “Nine to Five as to its rear quarter. members of the competitive dance team of The Dance Studio & Boutique perform at the Stittsville Villa Retirement Community in HIT TRUCK, SEE 3 Stittsville. Vacant farm home gutted JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF A vacant farm house in Goulbourn has been gutted by fire. City of Ottawa firefighters received the call about the fire just before 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22. On arrival at the scene at 8213 Flewellyn Road , firefighters found the house fully involved in fire. “The whole first floor was going,” said Rural Sector Chief Terry Gervais in describing the blaze when the firefighters arrived. The farm home was located on the north side of Flewellyn Road just east of the Dwyer Hill Road. There was no one around and while the vacant house was checked for occupants, firefighters could not gain entry due to the intensity of the fire. A total of 50 firefighters and 16 fire vehicles were on the scene at the height of the fire which was not brought under control un-

til 2:50 a.m. But even then, firefighters were still battling the fire until nearly 6:30 a.m. A backhoe was called to the scene later to help extinguish the fire which was still smoldering in the basement. Cedar beams in the structure provided the fuel for this ongoing smoldering. Firefighters from the Stittsville, Richmond, Eagleson Road, Old Almonte Road and North Gower stations were all on scene at one time. Water had to be transported from Ashton as well as from Stittsville. The farm home was totally gutted in the blaze. There were no contents in the home which was on the site of a proposed new estate lot subdivision. A barn on the same site had recently been removed. The value of the two storey home, which was clad in brick, is estimated at $300,000. The cause of the fire is now under investigation. There was no active electrical service to the home at the time of the fire.

Residents filled every seat in the lounge area to witness the performance while parents also watched,

making for a responsive and appreciative audience. The Dance Studio & Boutique’s competitive dance team continues this tradition of sharing their joy of dance with the residents at the Stittsville Villa as it follows the belief of director Christine Delorme that such performances have two benefits for her dancers. It gives the dances the opportunity to learn from the experience of performing their dances in front of an audience, some for the first time. It also helps teach the dancers the importance of bringing happiness to others and giving back to the community. This all ties in with the Christmas spirit and results in an entertaining pre-Christmas event for Villa residents. Following their performance at

the Villa and despite the icy, rainy, snowy weather that prevailed that day, the dancers and their families enjoyed a dinner and “secret Santa” gift giving event at the home of one of the parents. This too has become a tradition for the dance group. The Dance Studio & boutique, which is located on Stittsville Main Street in the heart of Stittsville, provides classes in ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap, hop hope and musical theatre as well as combo classes for younger dancers and ladies’ classes. Registration is ongoing. For more information, contact the Studio at 613-831-1010 or the director Christine Delorme at 613832-3516 or visit the website at www.thedancestudio.ca.

The Stittsville Villa Retirement Community has just undergone renovations including the refurbishing of the main staircase inside the main entrance. The only features of the lounge area that were not part of the renovation project were the chandeliers – one marvelous one in the centre of the lounge area and a number of others nearby. But this central chandelier almost saw the end of its days on Sunday, Dec. 12 thanks to the most unlikely of sources – dancers. What, dancers, you say? Yes, that’s right – an afternoon performance by the competitive dance team dancers from Stittsville’s The Dance Studio & Bou-

tique, which has become a Christmas tradition at the Villa, saw the chandelier touched once by 12 year old ballerina Laura Harvey as she lept in the air performing her opening solo. After that, The Dance Studio & Boutique director Christine Delorme, who was announcing the dancers as they performed, issued a couple of warnings to dancers to watch out for the chandelier. Fortunately, it was not touched again, even by the group’s one male dancer and its tallest member, Blair Schilt. But other than the one early brush with a dancer, the chandelier survived the 50 minute performance intact, to continue shining and embellishing the Villa’s lounge area. And what a performance it was! - from the arabesques and spins of

“It’s like a big house party.” This is how Bassel Khalil of Napoli’s Café in Stittsville describes the annual customer appreciation and charity holiday dinner which he and his brother Milad Khalil host each December. And while the event, which this year was held on Tuesday, Dec. 14, does resemble a big house party where there are many familiar faces, lots of friendly banter and good food and drink, what other house party do you know raises $25,000 for charity and includes among its guests a handful of Ottawa Senator players. But this is what happened at Napoli’s Café this year when $25,000 was raised for Roger’s House, the palliative care facility named after former Ottawa Senators coach Roger Neilson. And there on scene, having their photos taken with customers and adding to the aura of the evening were Ottawa Senators players Mike Fisher, who is honourary chair of Roger’s House, Chris Neil, Nick Foligno and Brian Elliott. And this was not the only Sens connection as Senators Chris Campoli and Jesse Winchester were among those who provided some of the prizes auctioned off during the evening. The auctioneering was done by none other than former Canadian Football League player and current broadcaster Ken Evraire who not only auctioned off the items up for grabs but also kept up a lively banter with host Bassel Khalil throughout the evening. So, maybe it was

a lot like a house party after all. “It was a jam packed evening,” Bassel Khalil said afterwards, noting that the annual event always quickly sells out with his regular customers all wanting to be there. And really, this is what it is all about – an opportunity for Bassel and Milad Khalil to give something special back to their customers while also raising funds for a good cause. And none of it could take place except for the generosity of the regular suppliers of Napoli’s Café who all pitch in to provide something for the evening. And so you have autographed hockey sweaters; two game used sticks from Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings; a dinner for four at Napoli’s, cooked and served by Senators Nick Foligno and Chris Campoli; a minor hockey team practice session run by Senators Brian Elliott, Nick Foligno and Chris Neil; a trip to Denver with pre-game field passes to see the Denver Broncos football team and four tickets to a Colorado Avalanche game; a half day treatment at Stittsville’s Mahogany Spa; a queen size Kingsdown pocket coil mattress with delivery and set up from Mattress Mart; a gift certificate at Mystiko Greek Restaurant; and 60 minutes of private instruction with free ice time from Endeavour sports group. Some of these brought in hundreds of dollars in the auction. And there was lot’s more. No one went home empty handed as Napoli’s provided a bottle of win and a Senators Christmas ornament for everyone. “It was a good party,” Bassel Khalil

says, adding that for a one day event it is quite something, not only as a way of showing appreciation to Napoli’s regular customers in a friendly, upbeat environment but also by raising $25,000 for a good cause, thanks to the generosity of Napoli’s many suppliers and friends. “It was a lot of fun,” Bassel continued, noting that 2010 has been quite a year for Napoli’s, not only with the success of this annual customer appreciation and charity holiday dinner but also Napoli’s major sponsorship last spring of the Bear Hug event in Ottawa which saw a possible world record established for the largest group hug, with students from Catholic high schools across the city lining the banks of Rideau Canal not only to set the record but to raise funds to fight cancer. Bassel and Milad Khalil of Napoli’s Café in Stittsville would like to thank the following for their support of this year’s annual customer appreciation and charity holiday dinner: Ottawa Senators Mike Fisher, Chris Neil, Nick Foligno, Chris Campoli, Brian Elliott and Jesse Winchester; Senator Sports and Entertainment; Sens Foundation; Henderson Security (Doug Henderson); Canadian Golf Club (Mark and Gail Seabrook); Mattress Mart (Mike Bernier); Mystiko Restaurant; Hair Junky; Mahogany Spa (Andrea Cochran); Endeavour Sports Groups (Mike Pillon); Integrated Snow (Sam Grandados); Coyle Publishing (George Coyle); Charton Hobbs (Robert Doherty); Sports Experts (Mike Swartzak); No Com (Terry Dods), Sysco Food; Tannis Trading; Ital Foods; Orleans Fresh Fruits; Kaufmann Seafood; Molsons Canada; Shoppers Drug Mart; Ken Evraire; and Jennifer Graves of the Sens Foundation.

Junkyard Jonny engaged student Haydon Covey to be the “cheer” leader, holding up an old container for “Cheer” detergent to encourage the students to, well, cheer. Haydon turned out to be one of the unsung stars of the show, as he quickly caught onto when and how to encourage audience cheers and he w o u l d do this throughout the rest of the show. JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Take Junkyard Jonny. Add in a touch of Trash Can Tony. Include juggling, dancing, drumming and ball throwing, all in front of an enthusiastic audience, led by a youthful “cheer” leader, just days before Christmas. And you have an hour of fun and frolic called Rudolph Rock. This is what happened at Holy Spirit Catholic School in Stittsville on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 16 when the Junkyard Symphony added a Christmas theme to its Recycle Rock show, including the presence of Rudolph the Red Nose Junkdeer. It all added up to a rollicking hour led by Junkyard Jonny a.k.a. Jonny Olsen and Trash Can Tony a.k.a. Tony Raybould. The stage of unbridled energy was set early in the show, as Jonny and Tony started off with a lively drum duet, music “with attitude.” Green and blue Christmas lights lay along the floor in front of

Parking layby area needed for dog walkers Walking the dog is a common practice for many. And for many in Stittsville, a location of choice is the expansive area of paths, fields and bush which lies immediately south of Abbott Street and the Trans Canada Trail east of Shea Road. This will continue to remain a popular dog walking spot, at least until the planned thousands of homes are built on the land as part of the proposed Fernbank lands development. At one time, until about a year and a half ago, many of these dog walkers parked their vehicles in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church’s parking lot on Shea Road which is adjacent to this area of fields, paths and woods. But after this was forbidden, the pet walkers took either to parking at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex or parking along the south side of Abbott Street just west of where Granite Ridge Drive runs into Abbott Street from the north. There is an open area between this area and the adjacent Trans Canada Trail and the fields beyond which makes it a convenient parking place. There can be numerous vehicles parked along Abbott Street in this area at any one time even though there is no defined

or indented parking area there. It would seem to make sense that a layby area, much like those along Stittsville Main Street, should be created by the city at this spot. This, in our view, is a safety issue. Dog walkers are not only getting out of their vehicles themselves but also must let their dogs out, sometimes dog who are fairly frisky as they are really looking forward to their upcoming outing in the field. Being parked right along the side of a busy street is not the best place for this to happen. One friendly leap by an energetic dog could result in death from a passing vehicle. It just is not the safest of situations. But a layby area would get these vehicles farther removed from the traffic flow and would make for a safer overall situation at this popular location. The city need not feel that this would be spending money in a short term way. For one thing, the Fernbank lands are going to be fairly slow in development and so the fields, at least some of them, are going to continue to be a dog walking paradise for

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS St. Philip Catholic School is in the midst of its 50th anniversary. The new butterfly garden at the school in Richmond was recently officially opened, coupled with the school’s first annual Family Movie Night. This represented the kickoff for the school’s 50th anniversary parade of events. A recent group photograph of all of the students was taken, with the photographer on the roof of the building. This photograph will serve as an important memento of the school’s 50th anniversary. students. The St. Philip Catholic Women’s League and the St. Philip Knights of Columbus are donating a statue of Jesus for the butterfly garden which will be formally unveiled in May when there is an official blessing of the school to mark its 50th anniversary. A 50th anniversary cookbook is being prepared and a 50th anniversary golf tournament may be staged. St. Philip Catholic School in Richmond opened in September 1960, with three classrooms available for 80 students in grades one through eight. The new school was officially opened and blessed in a ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 23, 1960.

Series of workshops about grief SPECIAL TO THE NEWS A series of workshops to help people understand grief is being planned. St. John’s Anglican Church in Richmond and Bereavement Support and Education – Ottawa have joined together and will be presenting this series of grief educational workshops.

Mourning the death of a loved one is a process that everyone will go through at one time or another. When a death occurs, it can be hard to understand the thoughts and feelings that grievers experience. The workshops will provide information to help people better understand the normal and necessary journey that is called

some time yet. But even if the fields were gone tomorrow, the layby parking area would make sense because it would be a much needed parking area for people using the Trans Canada Trail in this location. As it stands now, this major pedestrian walking trail lacks appropriate parking facilities for its users. Indeed, the situation at West Ridge Drive and the Trans Canada Trail is a shame. There should be an off-street parking area there for users of the Trans Canada Trail. As it stands now, those who use their vehicles to get to the Trans Canada Trail to enjoy its splendours must park on West Ridge Drive. Both of these situations should be rectified by the city with an appropriate parking layby in one case and an off-street parking area in the other. It is great to encourage physical fitness and walking but when no effort is made to provide for safe and convenient parking to allow this, it is just another detriment to fitness, whether that be from walking a dog or simply enjoying a stroll along the Trans Canada Trail.

Coming off an initial four months that included participation in the annual Stittsville Remembrance Day service and in the first-ever Stittsville Christmas Festival Concert as well as an inaugural old fashioned Christmas concert, the Goulbourn Male Chorus is looking for more voices, both from Goulbourn communities as well as from neighbouring communities like Kanata and Nepean. Music director Robert Dueck, whose passion for traditional secular and sacred choral music sparked a desire to start this male chorus, feels that the choral foundation that the current members of the chorus have established in just four short months now merits a growth of the chorus. It should be remembered, though, that although the chorus is showing great promise already, a key purpose of the chorus is to provide male singers with the opportunity to socialize with others and to enjoy making music together through the medium of choral singing. It is, first and foremost, a chorus for men who love to sing and want to have fun doing it. Do you have to be an accomplished singer to join? No way. The only minimum requirement is the ability to match pitch. There is no requirement to be a great sight reader of music as long as a person is willing to work on developing this skill. Director Dueck is more than willing to spend time with interested people to determine where their voice fits in. He will assess a person’s vocal range for voice part placement. The Goulbourn Male Chorus will be starting its spring session on Monday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at the corner of Mulkins Street and Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville. There will be an end of season concert in the spring. The Goulbourn Male Chorus sings a variety of musical tunes ranging from secular/sacred to folk/ballad to spirituals to concert selections. One thing that any potential members should note is that there is a $40 per session membership fee. Even though the chorus is a not-for-profit venture with participants volunteering their time and talent, the membership funds are needed to help cover the cost of various music packages and to help build up the chorus’ music library. Anyone interested in joining the Goulbourn Male Chorus should contact the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church office at 613-831-1256, leaving your name and home phone number. Another avenue of contact is to send an email to the music director, Robert Dueck, at dueckrobt@gmail.com. He will replay to any questions and/or set up a musical appointment with you.

Santa visits with young hockey players JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF You think that you were busy in the days leading up to Christmas this year? Just imagine how busy Santa Claus was, making all those last minute entries in his big book,

overseeing the elves’ toy making activities, and getting his reindeer and sleigh all ready for his Christmas Eve travel. Now, that’s busy. on Wednesday evening, Dec. 22. It was a pre-Christmas session for Richmond Munster Minor Hockey Association’s youngest players, the four, five and six year olds in the hockey development program. SANTA VISITS, SEE 11

And there, out on the ice among them (namely the Penguins, Panthers, Blue Jackets, Team Canada, Senators and Canadians), on skates himself, was good old Santa Claus, accompanied by his faithful elf who this year seemed to be even better dressed – perhaps Santa gave him some additional elf clothing at Christmas last year. Santa skated around the ice surface with the youngsters and then, sitting on a blue (Go, Richmond Royals) chair at centre ice, met and chatted with the young players in their hockey gear. He listened to their Christmas wish list and gave each one a candy cane. Santa, of course, being the friendly sort that he is, even slowly made his way in front of the arena seating area, waving through the plexiglass to the parents sitting there. And he did not stop there. He even slowly skated by the lobby area, waving through the viewing windows and bringing his Christmas cheer to those in the lobby. Yes, despite being only 48 hours or so before he would be starting his Christmas Eve travels around the world, Santa made sure everyone in the arena got to share in his Christmas spirit. He’s a jolly fellow, that’s JOHN CURRY PHOTO for sure, and sure made a pre-Christmas on-ice hockey Santa Claus, right, seated, chats with Devin Kinkade, left, at centre ice at the practice a memorable moment for Richmond’s youngRichmond Memorial Community Centre in Richmond. est hockey players.

The National Capital Cappies, sponsored by the Ottawa Citizen, are meant to encourage drama productions in high schools. And that’s why “Treasure Island,” one of the most popular adventure stories of all time, found itself being performed on stage at South Carleton High School in Richmond recently. This rousing adventure story featuring the villainous Long John Silver, the innocent young Jim and a search for buried fortune on Treasure Island came to life thanks to the efforts of 18 SCHS students, performing under the direction of fellow students Meghan Campbell and Alexa Polenz. In two days, I will join my family for Christmas. It is a time to spread goodwill where we can, and celebrate that for which we are thankful. While I’m there, I hope to see my parents’ old friend, François d’Orglandes. François is an artist whose family is known for taking in less fortunate strangers for dinner on Christmas Eve. They personify the “kindness of strangers”. They make it easier to build healthy, secure, vibrant communities. In the same way, The Ottawa Hospital benefits from remarkable community support. What our community leaders, philanthropists and, in many cases, your neighbors have achieved this year is impressive. The Ottawa Hospital Foundation’s 20/20 Campaign raised $24.5 Million for a new Cancer Centre at the General Campus, as

well as the Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. The community’s contributions have made a meaningful difference. They have allowed the centralization of nine radiation machines at the General Campus; added 15 new chemotherapy chairs, for a total of 50, to the cancer program; offered more natural light and comforting clinical environments to cancer patients; and provided them and their families with easy, comfortable access to outdoor areas. All of this will help the recovery process. There’s more. Our community has donated over $2 million dollars to research at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Most recently, they have made possible the acquisition of CyberKnife, a revolutionary radio-surgery system that can eliminate the need for invasive surgery in many cases. Soon, they will enable us to fund the installation of the Canadian Forces CAREN system, a virtual reality simulator to assist the rehabilitation of Canadian Forces combat casualties, as well as the other patients. This generosity improves the quality of care patients receive every day. Donations make a real difference. In other words, the community is the hospital’s foundation. RICHMOND

Races might hit 500 mark JOHN CURRY NEWS STAFF Things are looking up for this year’s 29th edition of the Richmond Road Races, the Ottawa area’s oldest winter running event. “We might hit the 500,” Joe DuVall of the Run Ottawa Club which organizes the event said. He noted that registration for the event on Sunday, Jan. 16 is already 70 runners ahead of last year. Mr. DuVall, who has been involved with the Richmond Road Races since their inception by the former township of Goulbourn, said that the races hit the 500 registration mark in the year 2002 but has not achieved that high water mark since. He also noted that whereas for the first two decades of the races, there was about 75 percent male runners, now this ratio has changed somewhat. About 55 percent of the runners are now women. The Richmond Road Races again this year will be following the routes established in 2009. In previous years, the races had travelled along McBean and Perth Streets in Richmond, as well as along the Eagleson Road. In 2009, the routes were changed so that the 5K course heads south from the traditional starting line at South Carleton High School, going along McBean Street for about 2.1 kilometers to Dobson Lane where runners head east for a short piece before reversing themselves and returning to South Carleton

438566

High School. The 10K course heads south on McBean Street from South Carleton High School, all the way to Century Road and then looping back via McCordick Road and Dobson Lane to end up at the high school. The races mean that McBean Street between Ottawa Street and Burke Street, i.e. in front of South Carleton High School will be closed to all traffic between 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16. Traffic will also be re-routed at Century Road and McCordick Road during this time period. All of these traffic detours will be managed by the Ottawa Police Service. Residents of Richmond Estates as well as residents along McBean Street and Century Road will be affected as they will be unable to travel north on McBean Street during the extent of the race. These residents will be able to detour southward but should make allowances for the additional travel time that will be involved, especially if trying to attend a morning church service in Richmond. The 10K Road Race will be starting at 10 a.m. while the 5K race will head off at 10:10 a.m. Change rooms will be inside South Carleton High School. There will be a babysitting service provided although it requires pre-registration by phoning 613986-7102. There will also be a hot postrace lunch available.

There will be awards for the first three finishers, both male and female, in both the 5K and 10K races as well as the top three male and female finishes in a variety of age categories. Race kit pickup and registration will be taking place at the Bushtukah Great Outdoor Gear store at 203 Richmond Road in Ottawa from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15. There will also be a race day kit pickup at South Carleton High School in Richmond on race day, Sunday, Jan. 16 from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. There will be no race day registration. Registration can be done online at runottawaclub.com or by mail to the Run Ottawa Club, Box 426, Station A, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 8V5. Registration includes a long sleeved technical t-shirt.

At Stittsville Legion BARB VANT’SLOT SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Friday night darts will be resuming on Friday, Jan. 7. Bingo will be resuming on Wednesday, Jan. 5. COMING EVENTS On New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, Teri Bennett will be entertaining at the Stittsville Legion Hall at 3 p.m. Euchre is played at the Legion Hall every Tuesday afternoon, starting at 1:15 p.m. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend.
