New Year’s Eve is great when there is a funfilled party to attend. When that party is in the local community, at a spot with lots of parking and a lounge area with plenty of space for dancing and chatting, that’s even greater. And when the party raises money for a worthwhile charity like the Stittsville Food Bank, well, that’s just greater than great – it’s priceless. This, then, is the story of the second annual Stittsville Rock’in New Year’s Eve FUN-Raiser, held once again this past New Year’s Eve at the lounge at the Oz Dome on Westbrook Road off Carp Road between Hazeldean Road and highway 417 in Stittsville. See FUN-DS, page 2

Helping Haiti SPECIAL TO THE NEWS People in Haiti are still suffering as a result of the tragic earthquake which struck the country a year ago. They are now facing the danger of cholera as well as the devastation of their country. The Community Bible Church in Stittsville wants to help the situation and has organized a fundraising event for Wednesday, Jan. 12, the first anniversary of the earthquake. All of the funds raised by this fundraiser will go to support those still suffering from the earthquake and now the cholera outbreak in Haiti. See BALLROOM BLITZ, page 7

Fun-ds on New Year’s Eve

fROM PAGE 1 Organized once again by Orlene Campbell and Kirsten Burke and their team, the party this year did not top last year’s

attendance of 106 because many could not attend due to illness (that nasty cold that has been making the rounds). But this did not affect the fun. The mu-

sic was still great, thanks to the DJ. The giant big screen, which was such a hit last year, was back again and once again was a hit at the party. The food this year, which was catered by the Oz Dome, drew rave reviews – it was delicious. Last year’s inaugural event featured numerous gift basket raffles which generated $800 of the $3,500 which was raised for the Stittsville Food Bank. This year organizers went with fewer raffles

to help the evening flow smoother but it also meant a little less raised for the Stittsville Food Bank, especially when combined with the slightly lower attendance. But the event this year still raised $2,214.27 for the Stittsville Food Bank. So, fun and fundraising – that’s what the Stittsville Rock’in New Year’s Eve FUN-Raiser is all about and that is what happened again this year. You can’t beat the combination.

The new Ottawa Fire Service fire station on Iber Road in Stittsville will not be ready until this spring. At last June’s groundbreaking ceremony for the 12,250 square foot, three bay fire station, it was announced that it was expected that the new fire station would be completed and operational sometime soon after this past Christmas. This will not be the case, although much of the facility is now constructed and work is focussed on the interior. McDonald Brothers Con-

struction of Stittsville is the general contractor for the new fire station which is the first one in the city being built in accordance with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver criteria. The new station, to be known as Station No. 46, has been designed to maximize the internal space, reduce energy consumption by up to 40 percent and use outdoor light and sunlight to advantage. Environmentally friendly features of the new station are a water efficient landscape design, high energy efficient doors and windows, the use of recycled and natural materials

in construction, radiant in floor heating, internal air quality measures and a steel roof that attracts heat in the winter and reflects heat in the summer. The new station, which will eventually serve about 40,000 residents once the adjacent Kanata West and Fernbank lands fully develop, will be equipped with three firefighting vehicles – a pumper, a pumper tanker and an aerial ladder truck. Designed with appropriate locker rooms, offices, a meeting room and a gear room, this new fire station will be staffed by both career and volunteer firefighters.

Construction is now well underway on the new Ottawa Fire Service fire station on Iber Road in Stittsville. To be known as Station No. 46, it is expected to open this spring.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS A midnight fire on New Year’s Day has forced two residents out of their McBean Street home in Richmond. They were both home when they smelled smoke in the house and called 91-1. The Ottawa Fire Service received the call at 11:51 p.m. on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 2011. When firefighters arrived at the scene on the west side of McBean Street between the Jock River bridge and Burke Street, flames could be seen coming through the roof of the bungalow. The firefighters managed to contain the

fire within the roof area of the home but the residents have been displaced because of the fire and are staying with friends. The fire started in the attic area of the home. An electrical failure is suspected but the exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation. Estimated damage to the home has been placed at $75,000 with $25,000 damage to contents. A total of 44 firefighters were on the scene of the fire at one time, with 15 fire vehicles on site. The fire was considered to be under control at 31 minutes after midnight.

Students in four Stittsville schools now benefit from the protection of a MedicAlert bracelet. This is thanks to an ongoing partnership involving Lions Clubs in Canada such as the Stittsville District Lions Club and the Canadian MedicAlert Foundation. It results in implementation of a program called “No Child Without” in which children aged 4 to 14 with preexisting medical conditions or allergies receive a free MedicAlert bracelet and membership, ensuring that first responders will have access to the student’s health information during a medical emergency. The Stittsville District Lions Club’s involvement centres around identifying and working with a local school to launch the program and to provide the funding required which can be up to $3,500 per school. Previously the Stittsville District Lions Club had funded the implementation of the “No Child Without” program at both Stittsville Public School and A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary School. Now the Lions Club has provided the funding that will see both Holy Spirit Catholic School and St. Stephen Catholic School covered by the program. The Lions Club hopes to include Guardian Angels Catholic School in the program next year. “With our support, children will have access to this important and potentially life-saving program,” said Don Zogalo of the Stittsville District Lions Club, noting that Lions Clubs such as the Stittsville one are proud to be able to play a role in expanding the “No Child Without” program in their communities. In recognition of the efforts of the Stittsville District Lions Club in expanding the program in schools in Stittsville, all of the MedicAlert bracelets and necklets provided to students enrolled in the program feature the Lions Club logo. The goal of the “No Child Without” program is to provide elementary school students with pre-existing medical conditions with a MedicAlert bracelet or necklet custom-engraved

Lorne Cassidy Elementary School and Don Carson of the Stittsville District Lions Club. All three schools – Holy Spirit, Stittsville Public and A. Lorne Cassidy, along with St. Stephen Catholic School – are now benefitting from the “No Child Without” program, a partnership project of the Canadian MedicAlert Foundation and Lions Clubs in Canada, including the Stittsville District Lions Club. with the child’s medical information, member identification number and the MedicAlert 24-hour Emergency Hotline number. By calling the Hotline, school staff, health care providers or first responders have immediate access to vital information from the child’s electronic health record including existing medical conditions, current medications, allergies, special needs and physician and family contacts. In the event of a medical emergency, parents of students wearing MedicAlert bracelets also are immediately notified by MedicAlert when the Emergency Hotline receives a call about their child. This provides peace of mind to parents who know that their child with a medical condition may be at risk when at school. MedicAlert’s “No Child Without” program focuses on children who suffer from allergies such as those related to peanuts as well as from childhood

diabetes and asthma. The program also is geared towards children with other pre-existing medical conditions as well. Across Canada, it is estimated that at least 10 percent of children have a condition that warrants MedicAlert protection. The “No Child Without” program was launched nationally in November 2006. The aim is to ensure that every child at risk medically receives MedicAlert coverage regardless of the child’s financial situation. The program, though, relies on the generosity not only of the federal government but of local Lions Clubs. “By partnering with local Lions Clubs to bring ‘No Child Without’ to schools in each community where Lions Clubs are active, we are helping to protect the lives and health of the children in each community,” says Robert Ridge, president and chief executive officer of the Canadian MedicAlert Foundation.

From jazz to hip hop to tap and more at SC dance show JOHN.BRUMMELL@METROLAND.COM

One hundred and sixty-eight dancers. Thirty routines, ranging from jazz to hip hop to tap to lyric to contemporary to musical theatre. Now, that’s a dance show. And it all happened at South Carleton High School in Richmond in December when the school’s annual Fall Dance Show took over Glenn Ward Hall for two nights of performances. Students from grade 9 through 12 participated in this exhibition of the energy and talent of the dance students at

SCHS. Several routines were both choreographed as well as performed by the participants. So there was the lyric duet “The Special Two” performed by Lauren Willing and Tyler Bender who also choreographed the piece. Colin Tannahill and Fady Ramzy both choreographed and performed the hip hop duet “2 Step” while Emily Hill and Rebecca Graziano did the same with their “Jar of Hearts” routine. Other routines were choreographed by students from their fellow dancers. Kristen Rogers choreographed “In the

Mood,” a tap routine danced by grade 9 students. Erika Sunstrum was the choreographer for “Drops of Jupiter,” a grade 11 tap routine. And Sydney Labossiere was the choreographer for “So Much,” a grade 9 hip hop routine. The choreography was not limited to just one or two students in some cases. Grade 12 students both choreographed and performed the lyric routine “The Dog Days Are Over,” the same situation which prevailed for the tap routine “Poker Face.” The grade 12’s were back in the second half of the program choreographing and performing both the “Toy Soldiers” and “We Are Who We Are” routines. So, there is a lot of talent among these South Carleton dance students, not only in performing but in choreographing the routines. And the variety – well, there was something of everything, from the grade 9 jazz routine “Escapade” to the grade 10

hip hop routine “Bad Girls” to the grade 11 lyric number “Imagine” to the grade 12 contemporary routine “Love the Way You Lie” to the grade nine musical theatre routine “Blame It On the Girls” to the grade 10 tap performance of “Pants on the Ground.” You couldn’t help but leave the hall tapping your toes and shuffling your feet – the dancing was contagious. And the costumes just added to the show. These were thanks to the “sewing moms”, namely Caroline Dano, Lynne Bourne, Aynsley D’Angelo, Kitty Runions, Michele Clarke, Diana Rogers, Sue Benton, Jody Layer, Heather Stewart, Bonnie Lamb, Sara Charron and Cheryl Morris. SCHS teachers responsible for the dance show were Mrs. S. Hamilton and Ms. L. Jaeggin. “Peer teachers” who were involved in the production were Kristen Rogers, Erika Sunstrum and Andrew Sim

From page 1 And everyone in the community is invited to attend this fundraiser and help out – while also having some fun, either participating or just watching others participate. The fundraiser, entitled “Ballroom Blitz,” is going to be centred around exercise balls, so you know it has to be fun, even just watching others doing their thing with the balls. The evening will be set up with four exercise ball workout stations, doing wall squats, roll out planks and other movements. But for those wanting to be a little more serious with their exercise balls, there will be a “Rumble Zone” where for an additional one dollar, a person will be timed. The top three ladies, men and children under 12 will then go into the final involving timed balancing. Word is that there will be some novel ways of getting these finalists off-balance on the ball if they are on it for too long. This should be fun to watch. There will be a two dollar entrance fee for this fundraiser which will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at the Community Bible Church which is at 1600 Stittsville Main Street (the former Home Hardware building beside the Stittsville post office) in Stittsville. There will also be chili available and there will be baked goods for sale, so it promises to be not only a fun evening but also a delicious one. Everyone is invited to attend to help out those suffering in

50 % 70 %

Haiti through this fun-oriented event. Exercise balls became the focus of this fundraiser because the idea came about from a person trying to balance on an exercise ball. Seven year old Isaac, son of Alexia Jimenez, one of the organizers, was sitting trying to balance on an exercise ball, listening to the song “Not Going To Leave You Stranded,” which was written by Bono, Jay-Z and Rhianna as a call to help the Haitian people after the earthquake. Isaac asked his mother about the words of the song and wondered how it was going in Haiti today. At the time, Alexia had just read a message from an orphanage in the Dominican Republic that the Community Bible Church had supported with medical supplies last February with heartbreaking stories on the cholera outbreak in Haiti. Not much seemed to have improved for the people of Haiti in the year since the earthquake and so Isaac suggested “Well, why don’t we do something else to help?” Alexia could not ignore this simple question from her son and so started thinking about a fundraiser event centred around exercise balls since that was what Isaac was sitting on, trying to balance, when he asked the question. And so this is how the concept of a fundraiser using exercise balls came about. And, as for the name, “Ballroom Blitz.” Various names were suggested and eventually the “Ballroom Blitz” phrase was selected.

The series of Thursday night euchre parties hosted by the Stittsville District Lions Club at the Lions Hall on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville will begin on Thursday, January 6 at 7 p.m.

It’s your choice - why not vote One of the highlight events of the year in this area is the annual People’s Choice Business Awards gala held under the sponsorship of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata. This is very much an area event as the Kanata Chamber of Commerce covers in its geographical territory Goulbourn (including Stittsville), Kanata and West Carleton. At this People’s Choice Business Awards gala, businesses from the various geographic areas are honoured in various categories. It is an exciting night, a night of suspense and elation, as these awards are announced. What makes these awards so meaningful to the business

community and indeed to the community at large is that they are what they are proclaimed to be – the People’s Choice. The winners are selected by an online voting process in which any resident of the area can participate. The businesses have already been nominated, with the nomination process ending on New Year’s Eve. Now, the voting process is open, running from now through to Jan. 26. Everyone in Goulbourn and Stittsville is encouraged to take the time to go online to the Kanata Chamber of Commerce website and lodge your votes in the various categories. You know what businesses you enjoy patronizing. You know what businesses are connected to the

community. You know where you get good deals. So make your choices and record your votes. Become a part of the process. Make sure that the “People” in People’s Choice means just that – you, the people. There are lots of good choices in the various categories for Goulbourn. The plate has been set. Now it is up to you to enjoy the feast and record your votes. Hopefully as many people as possible will take part in this voting so that this year’s People’s Choice Business Awards will reflect the choices of the people. That’s what it is all about. That’s what makes the awards so special. It’s easy and, more importantly, rewarding to be a part of it. Hopefully you will be.

The penny drops, and who can really be sorry Serious consideration is being given to eliminating the Canadian penny. In the early reaction to a Senate committee’s recommendation to this effect, the usual alarm has been expressed but most people seem relieved not to have to deal with the worthless little things any more. That’s a realistic way of looking at it. The year 2011 might be the first one without a pennies and what does it matter? We have long since passed the day when nostalgia about the penny was in any way justified. Sure, your parents or grandparents might be able to tell you about actually purchasing something with a penny —usually one solitary piece of a type of candy found in a barrel — but you stopped paying attention long ago. Maybe when you weren’t paying attention to your father’s penny story, you were thinking about telling your own children about the days when you could buy something with a nickel. Or a dime.

CHARLES GORDON When were those days, anyway? What would we be losing if the penny disappears? A little brown coin that doesn’t buy anything. It has a picture of the Queen on one side and a picture of a maple leaf on the other side. Nice, and quite Canadian. but there is no shortage of pictures of the Queen or maple leaves. In the old days, kids could gamble with pennies, tossing them to see who could land one closest to the wall. That was fun, and we could do that again, except what would we win? Right: more pennies. Until a few years ago, we could save up those pennies and put them into children’s UNICEF boxes on Halloween night, but that laudable practice

was eliminated, apparently for administrative reasons. Even UNICEF found the pennies more trouble than they were worth. Face it: these days, the penny is something that gathers dust on your dresser while you try to remember to roll it up and take it to the bank or throw it into one of those supermarket machines in order to trade it in for real money. Leaving us with the penny, an annoyance for consumers, an inconvenience for merchants, an idea whose time has come and went. Of course, when change is coming vigilance is called for, especially when it’s the change that is changing. So there will no shortage of watchdogs on the alert for stores and manufacturers rounding up instead of down, when they can no longer charge $2.98 and must choose between $2.95 and $3.00. Most of us will take it in stride, especially men, whose stride will improve with fewer coins in their pockets. For a

better stride, an extra two cents now and then seems a small price to pay. Mind you, some of the strategic challenges of shopping will disappear. Not mentioning any names, but I know of a guy who always carried three pennies among his coins when he visited the stores, the object being to get rid of those three pennies. If something cost $1.83, he would offer the three pennies. If it was $1.81, he would offer two. The theory was that in this way, he would gradually eliminate his weighty stash of pennies. He could have carried four pennies, for the sake of the $1.84

purchases, but that seemed too easy, less sporting. Carrying only three pennies added a thrilling element of uncertainty to the outing. It was a brilliant strategy, and not even remotely successful. The pennies continued to pile up on the dresser, even as the guy caused holdup after holdup in supermarket lines trying to locate one, two, or three, but not four when he needed them. The people in those lineups, not to mention the cashiers, will be delighted to see the penny go. Meanwhile, the guy is noticing that the nickels and dimes are starting to pile up on the dresser.

He likes You Tube. He likes making videos. He’s getting to like accounting. So it was only natural that Sacred Heart High School student Angelo Gatto would enter the first-ever Rule the Tube CA video competition sponsored by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. He not only entered the competition but was one of six finalists in the province-wide competition with his “Why CA’s Rock Rap” video. The Grade 11 student learned about this inaugural competition when a representative of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario visited his class last fall to talk about careers for chartered accountants and told about the Rule the Tube CA video competition. It involved creating a video of two and a half minutes or less in duration on the theme of “Why being a Chartered Accountant rocks.” “It was easier for me because I like YouTube a lot,” Angelo said in telling how he created his video. Indeed, he has had some experience doing this. “Making videos is probably one of my hobbies,” he explains, calling it a fun thing to do. It ended up taking Angelo about two hours to write the rap song for the video plus another hour or so to edit the video. It took a while to write the rap song because he had to do some background research on chartered accountants. He initially was going to play the guitar and sing for the video but since the competition was asking for creativity, he decided to go with the rap format. His entry turned out to be the only rap song among the six finalists. He found that the two and a half minute time frame restriction was just about right for such a video, being neither too short nor too long a time and providing enough opportunity for the theme could be explained without it being unduly long. Most of the music videos which he makes are three and a half to four minutes long because they involve including a complete song. His sister Sylvana, who is now in university, helped out by filming the video which features Angelo. This was the first time that he has worked on a video with his sister; usually he and friends create his videos. A big part of the contest was the promotion of the video. The more views, likes and positive

ratings received on YouTube, the better. People were invited to vote for their favourite video. Angelo admits that he was surprised on the number of views which his video received in the competition and acknowledged that there were lots of good videos entered in the competition. “I got lucky and I got picked,” Angelo, who is 16, says with regard to how his video about what being a CA can be like made it as one of the six finalists across the province. While he did not capture the $1,500 top prize, he did receive $200 for being a finalist. This is not the first video competition which Angelo ANGELO GATTO has entered. Last summer he and a friend did a video about a new flavour of Doritos. He admits that the video did not fare too well but says that it was a “fun project to do.” As for accounting in his own career plans, Angelo took an accounting course in grade 10 which made it seem like fun, so he took another course this year where he has been learning more about accounting and accountants. This has inspired him to take more accounting courses in the future when he attends university, either the University of Ottawa or Carleton University. This Rule the Tube CA video competition involved both university and high school students across the province. Of the six finalists, three were university students and three were high school students like Angelo. “As part of our overall Rule the World campaign for prospective future CAs, we’re giving students a chance to show off their video making skills and compete for cash,” said Jon French, associate director of career information with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, about the competition. The winning entries, one from Toronto and one from Thunder Bay, were announced at the end of November. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario is the qualifying and regulatory body of Ontario’s 34,000 Chartered Accountants and 5,000 CA students. It enforces the CA profession’s internationally recognized standards of qualification and enforces the profession’s rules of professional conduct.

A season of growing and exhibiting has ended with the presentation of trophies and awards to the most outstanding as the Stittsville-Goulbourn Horticultural Society ended its 2010 activities with a windup potluck supper and awards night. Susan Hughes received the Royal Bank Silver Tray for accumulating the most points overall in the Society’s shows during the past year. This was not the only award which Susan received as she was a multi-award winner on the evening. She received the Bank of Nova Scotia Award for having entered the best tulip in the Society’s spring flower show. She also received the Archie A. Bell Memorial Award for having the highest number of points overall in the Society’s

flower classes during the year. She also received the award for having the best bulb entry other than a tulip in the Society’s spring show. Margret Farr was a double winner. She received the Pam and Thor Thorgrimson Award for having the highest number of points overall in the vegetable classes during the year. She also received the Bradley Cup which had traditionally been awarded annually for the best plant grown from the bonus plants distributed at the beginning of the season. The Saunderson Award honouring the novice exhibitor with the highest number of points overall in the shows during the year was presented to Mary McNaughton. The Photographic Cup for most points in the Society’s annual photographic contest went to Mary Ann Graham.

Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker has become identified with the Christmas season and is performed by numerous ballet companies throughout the world. This past Christmas season it was presented by Ballet Jorgen, a professional Canadian ballet company, with performances just before Christmas at the Shenkman Arts Centre in Orleans. And dancing in this famous ballet for three performances on Dec. 20 and Dec. 21 was 12year-old Laura Harvey, a ballet student at The Dance Studio & Boutique in Stittsville. She had auditioned for and was accepted by Ballet Jorgen to dance as a member of the local youth cast in the Shenkman Arts Centre performances. To prepare for this dancing opportunity, Laura attended weekly rehearsals leading up to the performances. The Dance Studio & Boutique director and Laura’s ballet teacher Christine Delorme is not only very proud of her student but also has high praise for her. “Laura is a very hard worker and dedicated young dancer and we are all very proud of her accomplishment,” Delorme said. The Dance Studio & Boutique, located on Stittsville Main Street near Abbott Street in the heart of Stittsville, provides classes not only in ballet but in jazz, lyrical, tap, hop hop and musical theatre. Bell Capital Cup is memories JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

The Bell Capital Cup, billed as the world’s premier atom and peewee hockey tournament, which ran from Dec. 30 to Jan. 3, is all about making memories for players, coaches, organizers, parents, siblings, fans and volunteers. And among those with memories from this latest 12th annual tournament are a pair of eight year olds who normally play for the Stittsville Gladiators team, Mark Sutherland and Alyssa Nolan. They were selected to be the on-ice flag bearers for the minor atom A welcome ceremony which was held at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville on Thursday evening, Dec. 30, sandwiched between a couple of minor atom A all-star games. After the player introductions for the second all-star game, with the teams lined up on their respective blue lines, Mark, carrying the United States flag, and Alyssa, carrying the Canadian flag, were introduced and out they went onto the ice surface, skating around the rink as they held the flags upright, with the flags flapping to their full extent as the pair breezed around

the ice surface. As they stopped and stood flanking a red carpet which extended out to centre ice for the upcoming ceremonial faceoff, the arena was filled with applause as well as the traditional banging of hockey sticks on the boards and on the ice. Mark and Alyssa held their flags upright as first a recorded version of the American national anthem was played, followed by the singing of O Canada by Stittsville singers Joel and Kyle Curry. More applause, cheering and hockey stick noise making followed as the highlight of the welcome ceremony approached, namely the appearance of former Ottawa Senator Shean Donovan for the ceremonial opening faceoff. Wearing a white Ottawa Senators jersey bearing his Sens number 10, Shean walked along the red carpet, right between flag bearers Mark and Alyssa, as he made his way to centre ice where minor atom A all-stars Landon Thompson and Noah Henry, backed up by all-stars Will Cox and Ryan MacPherson, were waiting to participate in the opening faceoff. After the puck dropping, it was then time for the second minor atom A all-star game to begin, featuring players from

such teams as Barrie, Burlington, Kanata, Whitby, Belleville, Gloucester, Nepean and Osgoode-Richmond. The red carpet was rolled up and Mark and Alyssa, with their flags, left the ice surface but their memorable moments were not over. As they were being helped by their parents to remove their skates in their allotted dressing room, who should appear there with them but Shean Donovan himself. He posed for a photo with them and even signed personalized autographs for them, giving them yet another treasured memory of this night. So, do you think that Mark and Alyssa will remember Dec. 30, 2010 as they grow older? You bet. And isn’t this what the Bell Capital Cup is all about. Sure, it generates an estimated $15 million in economic activity for the city of Ottawa and it keeps arenas across the city busy for five days. All this has a price tag.. But memories, well, they’re priceless and that’s the way it should be, whether it is for flagbearers like Mark and Alyssa or anthem singers like Joel and Kyle Curry or players like Landon Thompson and Noah Henry who took the ceremonial faceoff or parents whose youngsters were on the ice as all-stars.

Former Ottawa Senator and longtime National Hockey League player Shean Donovan, centre, visits with Stittsville Gladiator minor hockey players and minor atom A welcome ceremony flagbearers Mark Sutherland, left, and Alyssa Nolan, right, at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex on Thursday, Dec. 30. The Bell Capital Cup minor hockey tournament has been going now since the year 2000 and over that time has generated more than two million dollars for charity, besides providing hockey action and lots of memories for hundreds of teams and thousands of players. This year’s Bell Capital Cup involved 493 teams with more than 8,000 players, taking part in over 900 games. Shean Donovan, who dropped the puck for the opening faceoff at the minor atom A welcome

ceremony, played a total of 951 National Hockey League games with seven different teams, scoring over his career 112 goals and 241 points in all. A right winger, he played his major junior hockey with the Ottawa 67’s, being drafted in the 1993 NHL entry draft. He went on to play for the San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche, Atlanta Thrashers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and, finally, from 2007 to 2010, the Ottawa Senators, finishing his career last spring.

Q

When should I expect my child’s teeth to fall out and be replaced permanent adult teeth?

A

Children go through stages of losing primary teeth. The first stage is at around 6 years of age (plus or minus 1½ years) where the four top and four bottom front teeth are lost and replaced with new adult teeth and at this age 4 new adult molars grow in behind the baby molars. The second stage of teeth being changed is around 12 years of age (plus or minus 2 years) with 12 teeth (baby molars and canines) being lost and replaced. Four more adult molars grow behind the 6 year adult molars at this stage too. If you want to know more about the changing of your child’s teeth give us a call today.

Q

Why do I only have one fan speed?

A

The most common reason for this problem, but not always, is known as a blower resistor. It is an electrical component with various smaller resistors within it to allow certain volumes of power to the blower motor fan. When one or two of these smaller resistors short out, you will lose the corresponding fan speed.

Oliver, who is a grade 12 student at Sacred Heart High School in Stittsville, is looking forward to the Canada Winter Games which involve a televised opening ceremony. The provincial speedskating team, both long and short track, male and female, will be flying down to Halifax together. Three of the five members of the short track men’s team are from the Ottawa area. Oliver is a member of the Ottawa Pacers club but also practises with the Gloucester Concordes where the other two local skaters skate. Oliver says that the Ontario team usually does well in the relay events at the Canada Winter Games, with the team’s goal being to win the flag as the championship speedskating team at the event. The Canada Winter Games are held once every four years, involving Canada’s best young 19 year old and under athletes. This will be Oliver’s one and only opportunity to compete in this national competition. His sister, Alison, 14, who is also a speedskater, competed in the short track team trials for the upcoming Winter Games, placing 20th . See STITTSVILLE, page 17

Have you made a New Year’s resolution to become more fit but are not familiar with the different tools and equipment in a gym that will help you do this. Then you should be interested in attending an upcoming series of free one hour workshops showing how to use different tools and equipment in a gym. The first workshop on how to use medicine balls for a full body workout will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 11, once at 9 a.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. A list of the additional workshops to be offered in this series will be provided at this first workshop. These workshops, which will deal not only with medicine balls but also with cable machines, stability balls, the TRX and more, are being offered by Charmaine Hall of Stittsville, who is a personal fitness trainer at the Kanata YMCA-YWCA at Scotiabank Place. Charmaine is also offering two new programs at the Y, one called “Liven Up” for those 50 plus and another called “In Shape” which is geared towards fitness newcomers. “Liven Up” is a gentle and fun program to build strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness. It will be offered for 15 weeks for one hour every Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m. An evening class may be added if there is enough interest. The program is geared towards mature adults involving a mixture of cardio, dumb bells, stability balls and balance exercises, all done to music. While meant for those over 50, younger people are also welcome to attend this gentle but challenging program instructed by Charmaine Hall. “In Shape” is a program aimed at females, introducing them to cardiovascular equipment and various weight machines in the gym. An eight week program that will be offered on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. for one hour , it will give ladies confidence in using the various machines. At the end of the eight weeks, each participate will receive a personalized program from Charmaine Hall so that they can continue working out in confidence. For more information about these free workshops or either of these two programs, please call the Kanata YMCA-YWCA at Scotiabank Place at 613-599-0280.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

It’s being called “Wise Guys and Gals Drop-In” and it’s going to happen every month, with all seniors in the community welcome to attend. It’s all happening at the Community Bible Church at 1600 Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville (the former Home Hardware building) where seniors are being invited to drop in for a hot cup of coffee, some sweet home baked treats and conversation, games and presentations. And what’s even better, it is all for free. It is just the way that the Community Bible Church wants to honour local seniors, with monthly daytime coffee dropins on the second Monday of every month except for the July and August. The October drop-in will be on the first Monday of the month due to Thanksgiving on the second Monday.

Future monthly drop-ins will be themed events or will feature guest speakers of interest to seniors. Future drop-in speakers and themes can be checked on the web calendar on the Community Bible Church’s website at www.cbcstittsville.com. The Community Bible Church can also be reached by calling 613-836-2606.
