It’s a win-win situation. Helping the environment here at home while providing much-needed help to homeless people around the world, including victims of the earthquake in Haiti. And it all involves a much used item that currently just goes to fill up landfills. It is all about the outer milk bags which contain the plastic litres of milk purchased by consumers. These milk bags do not have to go into the landfill here. Instead, they can be made into items that can help those in third world countries. These outer milk bags can be made into washable, quick-dry bed mats that can provide an alternative for homeless people in third world countries whose only alternative is to sleep on the damp, hard ground. Medical teams in earthquakeravaged Haiti have found these mats invaluable in their work. See MILK BAG, page 2

Milk bag mats From page 1 Tote bags crocheted from these milk bags are also used in hospitals and clinics in third world countries. They are given out filled with some of the basic essential items needed for survival. And this can all be done with milk bags which right now just go to the landfill. Anyone interested in hearing stories about how these milk bag bed mats are helping the victims of the Haitian earthquake or helping child-rape victims in the Congo or helping homeless people around the world should plan to attend a presentation and workshop about how this is done which is being held this coming Monday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Stittsville United Church on Fernbank Road just west of Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville. Those who attend will not only learn about how these bed mats and tote bags help around the world but you will get to see for yourself how 250 milk bags can be transformed into a sleeping mat for someone with no bed. There will be extra scissors and cro-
cheting hooks on hand at the presentation for some hands-on experience but participants are also urged to bring along their own scissors or rotary cutter or crochet hook. Ruth Richardson, who is spearheading this presentation and workshop, says that those attending will be shown how the milk bags become a colourful sleeping mat or a tote bag. It involves preparing the material i.e. cutting the milk bags up into one inch strips and then crocheting them together, creating the mat or tote bag. A person can do it at home, for example, when watching television. It’s a lot like knitting something – you just keep working away at it until the mat or tote bag is done. Just how long it takes to create a mat depends on how fast a person can do the crocheting. There is a province-wide network of over 70 small groups who have been involved in making milk bag bed mats for about six years now. There are already some local groups in the Ottawa area. The Ottawa Catholic School Board, for instance, has several schools involved in collecting, cutting and crocheting these
mats. These schools donated 50 mats last fall. There are other groups such as ones associated with the Bells Corners United Church and Riverside United Church. Using these outer milk bags for this recycling project helps the local environment by keeping these plastic milk bags out of landfills. These bed mats keep people from sleeping right on the ground or on leaf or reed mats. This projects them from dampness, biting insects and “paper cuts” from leafs or reeds. The bed mats are easy to wash and dry. There is a desperate need for such bed mats for the homeless in Haiti since the earthquake there. The tote bags are also proving to be very use items in third world countries. Making these bed mats from the milk bags is not difficult. How is it done, you ask? First, make sure the bag is clean. Lay it flat and trim off both ends to make it into a tube with clean edges. Then cut it into one long strip or cut it into loops
and string them together. Roll the plastic strips into a ball like yarn. Then use an appropriate crochet hook to chain stitch the material until it is 36 inches wide. Then it is a matter of single crocheting it until the mat measures 60 inches long. A key is to keep the tension very loose with nice big holes. There are many patterns to choose from when making either the bed mats or the tote bags. A person can choose the one that is most appealing to him or her. For more information about the upcoming presentation and workshop at the Stittsville United Church on Monday, Jan. 24 or about the project generally, please contact Ruth Richardson at 613836-8735. Even those who may not wish to actually make the milk bag bed mats or tote bags can help out simply by collecting the outer milk bags for the project. A five building shopping centre on the northeast corner of Huntmar Drive and Hazeldean Road in Stittsville is a step closer to reality. The city of Ottawa has approved a draft plan of subdivision for the 10.5 hectare site. In addition, a site plan covering the property must be prepared as one of the conditions of approval. A site plan application for the first phase of this proposed shopping centre has already been submitted to the city. It calls for a retail commercial development of 8,380 square metres of floor area in five build-
ings. These include a Metro store, a Shoppers Drug Mart, a CIBC bank, a TD Canada Trust bank and a multi-tenant retail building. The site will be accessed by three driveways on Hazeldean Road and three driveways off Huntmar Drive. There will be 621 parking spaces provided on site. Eventually, when other phases of the site are completed, there will be about 27,000 square metres of retail and service commercial space developed. The site includes land on both sides of Huntmar Drive north of Hazeldean Road. The future north/south arterial road running through the Kanata West development lands

approved for about 850 dwelling units. To the east of this site along Hazeldean Road is the 17 hectare retail site now being developed as the Grant Crossing shopping area with the new
Winners and HomeSense outlets. North of this Grant Crossing shopping area is a proposed Richcraft Homes subdivision with about 1,200 to 1,400 dwelling units on a 46 hectare site.

Shopping centre moves one step closer to reality
News
Police put two and two together SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The police put two and two together and came up with the answer to a vehicle hit and run. It all happened with the advent of the new year when a white vehicle parked at the side of the road on West Ridge Drive in Stittsville was struck sometime during the overnight hours on New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day. The impact of the collision pushed the parked vehicle about five metres from its original spot, with debris strewn all over the roadway. The vehicle which did the damage left the scene. However, on New Year’s Day, a Stittsville resident reported a vehicle stolen from the home sometime during the overnight hours on New Year’s Eve. This vehicle was located unoccupied on Landswood Way in Stittsville, with ex-
tensive front end damage. It was reported that the vehicle was unlocked with the ignition keys inside it when it was stolen. Ottawa Police Service officers investigating the hit and run on West Ridge Drive were made aware of the vehicle with front end damage that was abandoned on Landswood Way. On a visual inspection, it was determined very quickly that the Landswood Way vehicle was the vehicle which had struck the parked vehicle and fled the scene. Later in the day, the police put the pieces of the puzzle together, as it were, and it turned out that the vehicle abandoned on Landswood Way was not stolen after all. The person who reported it as stolen ended up being the driver of the vehicle which had struck the parked vehicle and had fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle on Landswood Way.

Thanks SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Good Samaritans exist in Stittsville. Just ask Catherine Robinson of Stittsville who fell on Tuesday, Jan. 4, suffering a fractured hip. But thanks to the efforts of others and the paramedics involved, she received the help that she needed. The whole incident has left her with the knowledge that Stittsville is a community where people care about others. Catherine wishes to thank all those who helped her that day as follows: “Thank you. Special thanks to Corey and Pam (I didn’t get last names) who came to my rescue on Jan. 4th as I lay on the sidewalk with a fractured hip. Also a big thank you to the people whose names I don’t know who provided blankets and a pillow. Last but certainly not least, thanks to Cassie and matt, the paramedics who took such good care of me. All your efforts provide that Stittsville is a community where people care about others. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.” 437099

Everyone had a ball, you could say, at the Ballroom Blitz. In fact, with over 20 of the coloured exercise balls (blue, green, red and yellow) in use at the fundraising event for Haiti, there were plenty of opportunities for those present, both young and adult, to spend some time with an exercise ball at one of the four different stations set up at the Community Bible Church on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville. Yellow caution tape was strung up to separate the four different stations where those who had paid the $2 admission charge could try out an exercise ball technique. These ranged from making a bridge to balancing on a ball to doing wall ball squats to doing so-called planks and push-ups using a ball (and rolling out into a so-called plank). Those who wanted could then move on to the
“Rumble Zone,” where for another dollar they could go up against the clock in their exercise ball moves. The top three would have the opportunity, at the end of the two hour evening event, to demonstrate their ball balancing skills on stage for all to see. For the novices, there were instructions placed on the wall at the various stations on what was required. For example, for wall ball squats, participants were advised to roll the exercise ball down the wall with their back until the ball is horizontal or at a 90 degree angle to the floor, holding the ball in this position for a minute. Sound challenging? It was, but it was also fun and it was helping to raise money for victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Indeed, the event itself, on Wednesday, Jan. 12, was being held on the first anniversary date of the disastrous earthquake. Cindy Molaski, an exercise ball teacher, was on hand at the event to provide instruction and her
expertise with exercise balls to anyone who was seeking help. All in all, in fact, there were over 28 volunteers involved in organizing and running the “Ballroom Blitz.” The words “Help Haiti” were broadcast on a giant video screen throughout the event, as a graphic re-
minder of what they were all doing there. And the fundraising went beyond the exercise balls. There was chili for sale as well as soft drinks. And what would a church-sponsored event be without a bake sale. And there was one, with goodies up for sale and the

proceeds going to help efforts in Haiti. The final fundraising count for the evening to date is $1,531 and more may come in from those who were unable to attend the “Ballroom Blitz” but want to donate to the cause. The event turned out to be a way for people, just individuals, to make a difference and help out the situation in Haiti where even now, very little of the earthquake rubble has been cleared away and many are still homeless. The money will be channeled by the Community Bible Church through another church which does work in Haiti, ensuring that every single penny raised by the “Ballroom Blitz” will be going to help improve conditions there and save lives. The whole idea for this unique fundraising event using exercise balls came about when organizer Alexia Jimenez was asked about Haiti by her seven year old son Isaac. He was sitting, trying to balance
on an exercise ball while listening to “Not going to leave you stranded,” a song by Bono, Jay-Z and Rhianna written as a call to help the Haitian people after the earthquake. Isaac was asking his mother about the words of the song and about what was happening in Haiti today. Alexia had just read some heartbreaking stores about the cholera outbreak that has hit Haiti recently, adding to the difficulties presented by the earthquake. When Isaac heard about this, he asked “Well, why don’t we do something else to help.” This began the idea of doing a fundraiser at the church and since Isaac was trying to balance on an exercise ball when the conversation happened, it was decided to make exercise balls the focus of the fundraiser. Hence the name “Ballroom Blitz” and the unique approach of using exercise balls in the event, letting people have fun while also raising money for Haiti.

son’s athletic achievements since he was “very much the parent” instead of the coach in recent years, it is undeniable that he has had a tremendous impact on innumerable young athletes from his long tenure as a coach. Currently John is a national team coach for Pentathlon Canada, coaching national team athletes in swim, combined and overall training programs. He is also head coach of Ottawa Modern Pentathlon as well as being head coach of Ravens of Carleton Swimming. In recent years, he has been leader of the Canadian Pentathlon Team at the Beijing Olympics, junior development coach for Pentathlon Canada and a consultant for various swim clubs in Eastern Ontario. All of this follows upon his time as a coach and administrator of several community-based swimming clubs spanning almost 35 years. These include the Goulbourn Aquatic Club (20012004), the Kingston Blue Marlins Swim Club (1986-1998), and the Pointe Claire Swim Club (1981-1986). He is currently certified as a level three swimming coach in the Canadian National Coaching Certification Program. Athletes come from all over Canada to train with John and benefit from his work, effort and enthusiasm. Over his coaching career, he has coached swimmers who have broken 55 national and 121 Quebec records. He was Lynn Chornobrywy’s coach when she won a gold medal in Modern Pentathlon at the world championships in 1993. He also coached a young Simon Whitfield in swimming as he went on to win the Olympic gold medal in Triathlon in 2000. “But there’s an awful lot of enjoyment in the daily showing up to the pool and having a good time with the athletes,” says John. “That’s what keeps me coming back. It’s not the super highlights, it’s more the day-to-day feeling of helping at the pool and having them be successful.” As he approaches his 60th birthday, John plans to keep on contributing to sport however he can in the future while also enjoying the show as his son, Matt, continues to rise on the national and international swimming scene as evidenced by his swimming award at the Ottawa Sport Awards this year. Matt, who won this same award back in 2008, had one of his best seasons in the pool in 2010. He won the 200 metre backstroke at the Spring Nationals/ Pan Pacific Trials, at the Canada Cup/Short Course Nationals and at the Summer National Championships. He added two

more firsts in the 50 metre and 100 metre backstroke at the Canada Cup, thereby making the Pan Pac Canadian team. He also won three bronze medals in other major competitions and finished the season with a tenth place finish at a World Cup event held in Berlin and Stockholm. John has enjoyed watching his son progress as a swimmer. “It’s a real journey and I’ve had a real good time watching the whole thing,” John says about Matt’s swimming career. “And that’s right from the time when he was nine years old and he showed up to his first local swim meet and he took one look inside the pool and said, ‘I’m not doing that, I’m outta here!” “I’m quite pleased and proud of where he’s got,” John adds. He felt shocked when he learned of his lifetime coaching award honour, as he knows of many other exceptional coaches in the Ottawa area. “For me, it was totally unexpected, and I’m very happy for Matthew as well,” he said. John himself had quite a career as an athlete, especially in the 1970’s. He was McGill University’s athlete of the year in both 1972 and 1973. From 1967 through to 1973, he was a member of the Canadian national swim team each year, representing Canada at various international championships including the 1972 Olympics in Munich. From 1974 to 1977, he was team captain of the Canadian team to the World Modern Pentathlon championships every year. This included participating in Modern Penthalon in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. In 1973 and 1974, he was the athlete representative on Swimming Canada’s Board of Directors. Other local athletes honoured at the Ottawa Sport Awards banquet included Cole Hobin of Ashton and Anthony Ashe of Stittsville, members of the Carleton University Ravens men’s basketball team which was honoured for winning the Ontario university basketball championship in 2010. Another local connection for this team is the presence of Kyle Vezzaro of Stittsville as the manager. South Carleton High School graduate Danika Smith was among the members of the Ottawa Devils women’s touch football team who were honoured for winning the national championship in 2010.

Concentrating on their cards as they play four-hand euchre at the Lions Hall in Stittsville on Thursday, Jan. 13 are, from left to right, clockwise, Joy Phillips, Vivian Lester, Bruce Crabtree and Ron Phillips.

A bright spot for cards The card playing at the regular Thursday euchre parties at the Lions Hall in Stittsville has brightened up this season – quite literally. New lighting has been added in the Lions Hall which has brightened the place up, making it a lot easier for the card players. And card players galore there have been in the first two nights of the current series of parties which run through until Thursday, April 21.There were 11 tables played on the inaugural night on Thursday, Jan. 6, quite a turnout. But these numbers were topped on Thursday, Jan. 13 when there were 13 tables played. On Thursday, Jan. 6, Ginette Gourgon finished in first place, with Ron Phillips in second and Anne Williams in third. Georgette St. John had a good evening, capturing two prizes. One was the door prize while the other was the infamous booby prize. Oh well, a prize is a prize, no matter what the reason. Ada Gawlik had the hidden score. Despite the January date, the skunks were out on this evening. Both Liz Marcel and Joan Campbell experienced skunks. Gord MacIsaac was the first 50/50 draw winner while Joe Borsa
won the second 50/50 draw. On Thursday, Jan. 13, Beth Lewis led the way, finishing in first place. Marilyn Cooper was the runner-up while Viviane Lester ended up in third place. Thea Booth won the door prize while the booby prize when to Jean Howell. Carol Brown won the first 50/50 draw while Dawnean Featherstone was the winner of the second 50/50 draw. Oslar Johnston had the hidden score. And whether it was the cold weather or perhaps the brighter lighting in the hall, for whatever reason, no skunks showed up on this evening of card playing. Great fun and lots of socializing was had by all of the card players on these first two evenings and this will be continuing every Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Lions Hall on Stittsville Main Street, with everyone welcome to attend and take part. If you do attend, take along some Canadian Tire money if you have any lying around. This funny money is being collected at these euchre parties to help out the annual B.A.I.T. tournament which is hosted by the area Lions Clubs. It is a fishing tournament for the blind. The Canadian Tire money is used to acquire prizes for the participants in this fishing tournament.

People helping people - Yes! CBC television has completed its search for the most outstanding volunteers in Canada. The caliber and outstanding nature of the ten finalists as outlined in the wrap up show last Sunday evening shows that volunteerism and caring for fellow citizens, whether of Canada or of the world, is alive and well in our country. We, of course, know this because, quite frankly, volunteerism and showing concern and care for fellow citizens is alive and well right here in the Stittsville and Goulbourn community. Look at the many fundraising events which were held in the period leading up to Christmas for the Stittsville Food Bank. Just an awesome display of
community support for the Food Bank which does so much to help out the less fortunate in the community. But this is just one of many initiatives to help others that goes on all of the time in our community. Just last week the Community Bible Church held a fundraiser to help out those who are still suffering in Haiti. And this coming week, a presentation and workshop are being held at the Stittsville United Church to encourage people to be involved in making sleeping mats and tote bags out of milk bags, all to help those less fortunate in third world countries. It goes on and on, whether in our schools, our churches or in the community at large. People
helping people. It is going on all of the time in our community and in communities across Canada, as revealed by the CBC television show. We as Canadians should all take pride in this, that we are a country and a people that cares and shares. We must all commit ourselves to this ideal and when a local fundraising initiative to help others comes up, try to become involved or at least support it. This is part of our character as Canadians. This is part of our character as residents of this community. This is part of what makes life in Canada and in Stittsville and Goulbourn so rewarding and fulfilling and desirous.

Welcome to the new, cheery Canada I must have missed the big announcement, so I was more than a little surprised to see the sign greeting us when we walked into Canada Customs and Immigration at the airport. “Hi. Step in to Canada,” it said. Hi? Since when does the Government of Canada say “hi” to people? Isn’t that a little … well, breezy? Particularly for a government of a country known for its reserve. And particularly at Immigration. After all, this is where a visitor from another land makes his first acquaintance with our country. So you’d think the sign would be more formal, more august somehow. This is a serious business, coming to Canada, with immigration officers glowering at you and demanding that you show good reason for deigning to enter. Or so we thought. Obviously, somebody decided it should be less so. Rather than saying “Welcome to Canada. Stay in line,” the signs say: “Hi. Step in to Canada.”
CHARLES GORDON It’s actually quite a nice greeting, when you’re coming back from a stay in another country and feeling glad to be home. But it’s a bit of a shock. Just like finding out, when you open the hometown newspaper, that reusable bags, the kind we have been urged to, um, reuse, may pose perils that we have never considered. Usually, we think of this as a very cautious place, not flinging around cheery welcomes or taking chances with reusable bags. When we travel, people ask us what Canadians are like. Are they like Americans? Well, sort of, we reply. We sound more or less the same. We eat the same kind of food, watch the same kind of movies, listen to the same kinds of music. There’s hockey, of course. That makes us different. And we might be a little less
informal. We wouldn’t be the kind of people who put up a sign saying “Hi!” at the airport. Except that apparently we are. How this came to be is a mystery. If there was a big discussion about it, about whether signs should say “hi” at airports instead of “please wipe your feet and try not to raise your voice” we missed it somehow. Perhaps we were out of the country when Parliament debated that. Somehow no one was talking about it when we returned, and no one was talking about the big competition run by Citizenship and Immigration Canada to come up with a new slogan to greet people at international airports. This being Canada, we couldn’t have changed the sign without a competition. These might have been some of the losing entries: “Welcome to Canada. No smoking anywhere.” “Hi. Please don’t use plastic bags and the reusable ones

aren’t so great either.” “Welcome to Canada. No joking with the Immigration officers.” “Hi. Newspapers in the black box, tin cans in the blue box, food scraps in the green.” “Hi. Please remove overshoes before stepping in to Canada.” “Enjoy your stay and be sure to check out our anti-idling bylaws.” Well, we know now what the winner was. The next step is to consider the implications. Are we, as Canadians, ready to become the gregarious, hi-saying folks implied by the sign? Must we now talk to each other in elevators? Can we leave our overshoes
on? Will it now be against the law to say “Good afternoon”? May we now wear baseball caps inside the house? May our children address their teachers by their first names? Will fistbumps replace handshakes at diplomatic receptions? And, finally, how does all this affect the reusable bag situation? Words have consequences, as we learn every day. The government has apparently decided to be chummy with Canadians. Exactly how chummy we’ll learn around income tax time. We can’t wait for the letter. “Hi,” it will say. “Step in to the tax audit.”

Editor: With regard to the editorial in the Stittsville News on Dec. 30, 2010, I cannot understand people complaining that there is no parking for dog walkers on Abbott Street near Shea Road. These walkers can avail themselves of the excellent parking at the Goulbourn Recreation
Complex on Shea Road. They would be close to the fields and the Trans-Canada Trail. There is no need to park on Abbott Street at all. Take care and happy walking. A healthy and Happy New Year to you all. Edna Knight Stittsville

ber of years. I’m afraid that I find that answer a bit matter of fact. Now, if the organizing committee had given a list of reasons why my suggestion was impractical, fine – I can live with that. Or if the organizing committee had done a general survey among registrants to hear their opinions on the issue and if, at the end of the day, most participants were satisfied with the status quo, I can live with that as well. I just find it disheartening that the only Richmond community event which prevents many of its residents from participating in some way or another is the Richmond Road Race. I guess I’ll just have to be satisfied with running the Ottawa Race, the Perth Race and the Stittsville Race. It’s too bad that I can’t run one in my own “backyard. Rev. Building a foundation of trust... one home at a time
Editor: Another year, another Richmond Road Race, and I’m sure that it was once again a huge success. I don’t want to sound like sour grapes but am I the only resident of Richmond who feels somehow slighted by the fact that the Richmond Road Race takes place on Sunday morning at 10 a.m., making it obviously very difficult for anyone who is affliated with any of the five Christian worshipping communities from participating? Not only am I a parish priest, I am also an avid runner and would love to be part of this event which is hosted by my community. In spite of my efforts over the last few years to have the organizing committee consider whether it would be possible to have the race start a bit later, say at 11:30 a.m. or noon, the reply I received back was simply “No. That’s how it’s been for x num-

City of Ottawa Councillor Reports By Shad Qadri, Councillor Ward Six Stittsville City of Ottawa After many discussions with representatives with Hydro Ottawa, it is a positive and encouraging step that the company is hosting an open house on Monday, January 24th in Hall A located inside the Goulbourn Recreation Complex at 1500 Shea Road. With the frequency of power outages that have been affecting our community, this is an opportunity to ask questions and hear what Hydro Ottawa has to stay regarding plans for improved reliability in Stittsville. We have been working at finding a solution to these outages and this open house is a chance to learn and see what is being planned in your community. Your attendance is crucial. Improved OC Transpo service to Scotiabank Place I would like to congratulate the City of Ottawa, OC Transpo, and the Ottawa Senators organization for working together and helping Ottawa residents by increasing bus service to Scotiabank Place in Kanata. A new transit hub from Bayshore Station to Scotiabank Place for all Senators’ games and events, started on Friday, January 14th. Residents attending a hockey game or event at Scotiabank Place can hop aboard any bus heading to Bayshore Station and, from there, catch a Connexion 400 bus that will take them directly to the facility. Connexion 400 buses depart every 10 minutes from Bayshore Station starting approximately one and a half hours before game time. Travel time is about 15 minutes on Routes 402 and 406, and 28 minutes on Route 404. Getting to Bayshore Station is easy on Route 96, which travels via downtown and the Transitway. Catch your Connexion 400 bus at Bayshore stop 1A. The new service from Bayshore adds to the Connexion 400 service that
Hydro Ottawa open house already operates several direct trips to Scotiabank Place from strategic points across the city: Route 401 from Blair Station, Route 402 from Billings Bridge and South Keys, Route 403 from Hurdman Station and downtown, Route 404 from Eagleson and Terry Fox, Route 405 from Orléans, and Route 406 from Barrhaven. Direct Connexion 400 service is also available from these Park & Ride lots, which offer free parking: Trim, Place d’Orléans, Blair (Telesat), Greenboro, Strandherd, Fallowfield, Baseline, Eagleson and Terry Fox. After the game, the Connexion 400 buses will be waiting for customers at the same stop at which they were dropped off. Regular fares apply. This is exciting news not only for residents across Ottawa, but also, for the community of Stittsville. Not only will this new service improve transportation to and from Scotiabank Place, it will also help with a better access to the Stittsville community. Add your voice, create a vision The City of Ottawa is looking for citizens who are willing to be part of the Transit Commission, the License and Property Standards Committee or to one of the City’s advisory committees or boards. The City benefits greatly from the work done by these committees, which make recommendations to Council and contribute to the development of policies, programs and initiatives. Boards are the governing bodies for such entities as conservation authorities, the Cumberland Museum and the Pineview Municipal Golf Course. With 23 Committees and Boards looking for new members and mandates touching on a wide range of topics such as accessibility, business, cultural, diversity, environmental and transportation issues, chances are there’s a Committee or Board that will interest you. If you are interested in serving on a City of Ottawa committee or board,
you must be a resident of the City of Ottawa and 18 years of age or older. You can apply to several committees or boards at once, but can only be appointed to one of these at a time. (City employees are not eligible.) There are three ways to apply submit a résumé outlining how the committee(s) or board(s) would benefit from your membership, and how your work, education, hobby and/or volunteer experience are relevant to its mandate, fill out an application form, which can be obtained from any Client Service Centre or downloaded at ottawa.ca or provide both a résumé and application form. Please remember to include your home address and an e-mail address or telephone number where you can be reached. All applications must be received before 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 3, 2011 and should be directed to: Diane Blais, the City Clerk’s Branch of the City of Ottawa, 110 Laurier Avenue West, Ottawa, ON K1P 1J1. The fax number is 613-580-9609 and e-mail is committees@ottawa.ca. More information is available at www.ottawa.ca, including the necessary forms that are required for the process. I encourage you to be part of one of these committees and boards to have your say regarding city policies. Congratulations to Cydney Roesler and the Women’s Under 18 hockey team At this time, I would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Stittsville resident Cydney Roesler and the rest of the Women’s Under 18 hockey team that captured a silver medal at the recent world hockey championships in Sweden. Cydney was honoured at South Carleton High School in Richmond last week for her accomplishments and I would like to thank the staff, students and Councillor Scott Moffatt for allowing me to be part of such a special time for her.
Cydney and the team have not only made an entire community proud, but an entire country is proud of the team’s accomplishments. Thank you and congratulations for showing passion and pride for your country and the sport of hockey. Winner takes four minutes/km JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com
A four-minute per kilometer pace was good enough to result in a first place finish for Alexandre Michel of Ottawa in the 29th annual 10K Richmond Road Race in Richmond on Sunday, Jan. 16. He finished in a time of 40 minutes, 4 seconds, 16 seconds ahead of runner-up Phil Brunet, also of Ottawa. Pat McNeely of Merrickville was close in third place, in a time of 40 minutes, 31 seconds. Jenn Bon of Smiths Falls was the top female finisher with a time of 41 minutes, 48 seconds. 2011 begins with Bell Capital Cup championship SPECIAL TO THE NEWS What a way to start off 2011 – a championship victory in the Bell Capital Cup tournament. That’s what the Ottawa Valley Silver Seven White minor peewee AA team accomplished, capturing the tournament’s Minor Peewee AA championship banner. And it was thanks to a combination of stellar defensive play highlighted by strong goaltending as well as a balanced scoring attack. Just think of it – every forward scored at least one goal in the tournament. How’s that for scoring across the lineup. Forwards Jared Coyle, Adam Johnston, Ryan Shaw, Patrick Yates, Matt Musgrave, James McAllister, Sam Pare, Alex White and Cole Fraser all chipped in on the scoring while defensemen Eric Liska, Noah Cameron, Brayden Jorssen, Hayden Carver, Cameron McCleary and Kyle Lefebvre provided the defensive touch. Put the two together, along with the goalies Mike Leach and Nick Bond, and you have team work at its best. This is the key to the team’s Bell Capital Cup success. Just how did it all happen? On Thursday, Dec. 30, the Ot-
tawa Valley Silver Seven White minor peewee AA’s took to the ice against the Ottawa Sting, winning 2-0. A great start to the tournament. It was then an international contest as the Ottawa Valley Silver Seven White took on the Jokerit White team from Finland. This resulted in a 6-1 Ottawa Valley win. The team’s next game was against the Orangeville Flyers which resulted in a scoreless tie. Not bad – an undefeated record in round robin play. It was then on to the playoffs where the Ottawa Valley Silver Seven White team faced off against the Jokerit Blue team from Finland, advancing to semi-final play with a 7-0 victory. The next game was a “black and white” affair as the Ottawa Valley Silver Seven White took on the Ottawa Valley Silver Seven Black. The score also turned out “black and white” as the White squad rolled to a 7-0 win over the Black team - an impressive victory which sent the Ottawa Valley Silver Seven White team to the championship final at Scotiabank Place against one of their biggest rivals, the Gloucester Rangers.
This championship final was a thrilling game with lots of suspense right to the end. The Silver Seven White had to survive a six-on-four situation for the last minute and a half of the
game to emerge with a 3-2 victory and the tournament’s Minor Peewee AA championship. What a way to start a New Year! The Ottawa Valley Silver Seven White Minor Peewee AA
team draws its players from across the Ottawa Valley, with players coming from Stittsville, West Carleton, Carleton Place, Richmond, Pakenham, Osgoode, Manotick and North Gower.

Cydney Roesler, centre, of Stittsville holds the silver medal which she won at the recent women’s under-18 world hockey championships in Sweden as a member of the Canadian team as she is flanked by city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri, left, who presented her with a special certificate from the city of Ottawa last Friday, and by her mother Terri Dunnigan, right.
Robert Burns Day Jan 25th : Guest Piper Jordan McConnell
Cydney Roesler’s hopes for the future are twofold. She wants to play in the Olympics with Canada’s national women’s hockey team and she would love to attend an American university on a hockey scholarship. While she definitely wants to do both, attending university and continuing her involvement with the Hockey Canada women’s program, she admits that her most immediate goal is probably going to the women’s under-18 world championships again next year and winning the gold there. Cydney, who lives in Stittsville, has just returned from playing in these women’s under-18 world championships in Sweden this year where Team Canada won silver after losing to the United States squad in the final. She also wants to play well for her club team, the Ottawa Senators of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League, where she plays against many of her teammates on

this year’s under-18 team. But it is really trying to realize a childhood dream of playing in the Olympics for Canada that is her ultimate goal. “Really the big picture would be the Olympics,” Cydney said in an interview on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Now 16, she recalls that when she was younger, she thought that playing in the Olympics for Canada would be the coolest thing. But things to realize this dream did not really start to happen until she switched from boys’ hockey to women’s hockey at the beginning of the 2008-2009 season. She eventually started playing against players who were on the under-18 team and she came to realize how the selection process worked. Most of her team’s games are played in the Toronto area and they are virtually all scouted. So, performing well in the games means possible invitation to the Hockey Canada program. “It’s a really good way to get noticed,” she says. See CYDNEY, page 15

Cydney Roesler of Stittsville wears her Team Canada jersey from the recent women’s under-18 world hockey championship in Sweden.
that year, not knowing which one she would prefer. After that season, she decided to pursue hockey. “From there it’s hockey ever since,” Cydney says. She says that she likes hockey because of the speed and style of the game. She also feels that hockey has allowed her to meet a lot of new people in her life. One of the special people in her hockey life has been Tom Band who coached her for a number of years, from minor atom through to peewee. She credits him with teaching her so much and indeed lists him as her favourite minor hockey coach. Her involvement with the Canadian national hockey program has exposed her to the benefits both of fitness and of good nutrition. Nutrition and what Team Canada players should eat for best performance is stressed at camps and in training. Fitness is another essential, with virtually a year round focus. Cydney herself may take a little time off the ice in the spring but she tries to be on the ice throughout the summer, either with her club team or just with friends. But she also realizes that she is a student as well as a hockey player. Now in grade 11 at South Carleton High School in Richmond, she wants to get good grades, a goal that is shared by the national team program. She admits that it is sometimes tough when she misses school but she admits that she has a pretty good average and usually brings school work on the road when playing for the club team. She also makes a point of communicating with her teachers and letting them know when she will be gone from class. Cydney thinks that she is improving a lot as a player. She attributes this not only to improved fitness but also with learning a lot of the little things that go to make a better player. However, she realizes that she has to keep improving, especially if she hopes to someday make the Canadian under-22 women’s team which is the next step before the national team. “I think I have a bit to improve on before I reach that next level,” she says. A defenceman, she acknowledges that proper body position on the ice is hugely important in the defensive zone. She selfdescribes herself as a more offensive minded defenceman. She enjoyed playing on the Team Canada power play in the world championships. “I do enjoy rushing the puck,” she says but admits that she does not do it all of the time. She admits that she is working on getting better playing in her own end. Cydney will now be back with her club team until its season ends in April. She describes her Team Canada play in the women’s under-18 world championships as an “incredible experience.” One of the casualties in pursuing her hockey dreams is soccer. She used to play it and describes it as a fun sport but soccer began to overlap with her hockey and so she had to make a decision to focus exclusively on hockey. Last Friday, a lunchtime ceremony at her school, South Carleton High School in Richmond, saw Cydney receive a city of Ottawa certificate presented by city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri. Cydney wore her Team Canada jacket and had her world championship silver medal with her for the event.

From page 14 And that is exactly what happened. She was invited to the national women’s program’s strength and conditioning camp in Calgary last May. This was followed by a selection camp last August where she was chosen to play for Canada’s national women’s under-18 team in a three game series against the United States in Lake Placid that month. She played in all three games. There then was another selection camp in December to choose the team that would represent Canada in the women’s under-18 world championships in Sweden at the beginning of January. She was selected but not before a nervous day-long wait for the confirming telephone call. The call came on Dec. 20 and on Dec. 27, she was off to Toronto to meet up with the rest of the team and head off to Sweden for the championship. Quite a number of the Canadian team players are from Ontario and play in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League, so Cydney already knew or at least had played against them and was familiar with them. In Sweden, in the time leading up to the championship action, the team practiced and even played an exhibition game against a Swedish elite-level boys team. Team Canada, like all of the tournament teams, were booked in a hotel. The players had only one day off in which to do any sightseeing. The rest of the time was consumed by practices, game-day skates and games themselves. Cydney was impressed with the caliber of hockey which was displayed by all teams in the tournament. “It was fun to play at such a high level against teams from across the world,” she said. Since she will only be 17 at the time of next year’s world championships, she is looking forward to again competing for a spot on the team. Cydney’s hockey career started when she was in grade three. She played both novice A level hockey as well as ringette

A successful Santa Claus parade, Lighting of the Park ceremony and Winter Wonderland banner contest again last December means more of the same next December. The first Saturday in December has already been earmarked as the date for the 2011 Santa Claus parade and Lighting of the Park ceremony which includes the official unveiling of the Winter Wonderland banners which are created by local youngsters and are hung from the posts along McBean and Perth Streets. During discussion of the events at the Richmond Village Association (RVA) meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 4, it
was suggested that one improvement for the Santa Claus parade might be having more participants on foot to slow down the speed of the parade and keep it more together. Parade organizer Leslie Abraham said that there is some thought about obtaining some Christmas costumes that South Carleton High School students could wear as they walked between each float in the parade. It was also suggested that perhaps the RVA should engage a band that would walk on foot at the start of the parade, thus regulating its speed. The Lighting of the Park ceremony, at which the Christmas lights on the trees at Memorial Park in the heart of Richmond are turned on for the first time and at which the Winter Wonder-
land banners created by 25 Richmond youngsters are unveiled, was considered a hit again this year, including a visit by Santa Claus. RVA treasurer Judy Wagdin said that all of the Winter Wonderland banners are now erected along Perth and McBean Streets in the village. She noted the success of the program, advising that there is a waiting list already for businesses wanting to sponsor these banners. She noted that the sponsorship cost for the banners had gone up to $90 each from $75 each this year but that the increase did not impact support for the program. “Cost is not an issue,” she said, although she noted that the RVA itself just breaks even on the program because of the cost of the banners.

These family crafts and activities sessions are not the only 2011 events at the Museum which have already been scheduled. The Goulbourn Museum’s monthly knitting circle, “Yap & Yarn,” will be meeting nine times during the coming year, on the third Sunday of the month. The sessions will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Goulbourn Museum. The dates for these “Yap & Yarn” sessions are Jan. 16, Feb. 20, March 20, April 17, May 15, Sept. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 20 and Dec. 18. There will be no sessions in June, July or August. Chorus welcomes volunteers, singers While the Goulbourn Male Chorus is on the search for more singing members, there are also volunteer opportunities available for non-singers who would just like to help out in some way. The Chorus would greatly appreciate any offers of help from those who would be willing to offer assistance in such roles as sheet music management or as ushers or poster designers for the group’s concerts. As for singing members, the Chorus would like to increase its numbers to give even more men who love to sing the opportunity to do so. Director Robert Dueck will gladly spend time with any new recruits, sorting out where their voice fits in and what the person’s vocal range might be.
Magic show in Richmond JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com
There’s nothing like magic. That’s why you should mark down Saturday, Feb. 12 on your calendar as it will be an opportunity to witness and enjoy a magic show. Yes, that’s right. Magic will be on display at a Family Luncheon and Magic Show on Saturday, Feb. 12 at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church hall on Fowler Street in Richmond. But there will be more than a magic show, as if the magic were not enough. There will also be lunch served right at your table, face painting, children’s entertainment and raffles. This is all taking place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the church hall that day. And the best part of it all is that the cost will be only five
dollars per person, with anyone under two years of age being admitted free. Now, that’s truly a magical price tag. This Family Luncheon and Magic Show will be only the first part of a doubleheader attraction at the St. John the Baptist Anglican Church hall in Richmond that day. The evening will see the holding of a dinner, dance and silent auction. There will be a roast beef dinner, although a vegetarian option will also be available. The event will open with refreshments at 6 p.m. The dance will feature music by Richmond’s own Pam and Doug Champagne which is always a treat. What is best is that the tickets for this event are only $20 per person. What a deal! Tickets to either of these Valentines-related events can be obtained by calling 613-838-4459.

The Chorus draws its music from a wide range of selections including sacred choral music, folk and ballad music, spirituals and concert music. The spring session for the Goulbourn Male Chorus got underway with a first practice on Monday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Stittsville. This new session will culminate in a spring concert. While the Chorus is a not-for-profit group, there is a $40 per session membership fee to help cover the cost of each music package and to build up a music library. Anyone who would like to join the Chorus or perhaps help out in other areas should call music director Robert Dueck at 613-836-1824 or alternatively should send an email to Mr. Dueck at dueckrobt@gmail.com. Those wishing to join should have some ability to match pitch and, while not being expert at sight reading music, should be willing to work on developing such a skill. The Goulbourn Male Chorus has gotten off to a great start since being formed last September. Its performance at its pre-Christmas concert showed just how much can be accomplished in just a few short months and so the future looks very promising for the group. The Chorus was started by director Robert Dueck of Stittsville as an outlet where men who love to sing and have fun doing it can do just that. The singers in the Chorus have the opportunity to socialize with others while also making music through the medium of choral singing. Besides presenting its own concerts, the Chorus is available to entertain at fundraising or community events.

All Saints High School and Sir Robert Borden High School are both close behind, both with records of five wins and one loss. The Huskies defeated the Sir Robert Borden Bengals 64-43 in a game before Christmas. The Huskies will meet the All Saints squad later in the schedule. The Huskies are the top scoring team in the league, with 395 points scored in the six games. This is two more than the 393 points scored by the St. Patrick High School squad, the East Division leaders who have also played six games, although with one loss. In the high school senior boys’ basketball tier 2 league, the South Carleton High School Storm are right up there among the leaders in the West Division with a record of five wins and two losses. Last week the Storm lost 68-54 to the Division leading St. Francis Xavier High School team but then came back to earn a one point, 4948 victory over Redeemer Christian High School. The Storm had opened their season late last November with a loss to Ecole Franco Ouest but then had rattled off four straight wins before last week’s loss to St. Francis Xavier High School. South Carleton has scored 422 points in their seven games to date, the most points scored by any tier 2 team.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Curling without ice. Students at Stittsville Public School got the opportunity to experience the thrill and excitement of the sport of curling last week without leaving the school. It all happened thanks to presenters from the Capital One Rocks and Rings curling program. Various drills, relays and teambuilding activities were used to introduce students in grades two through five to the sport of curling. It was a highly interactive program with the emphasis on fun. Each participating student received a Capital One Rocks and Rings gradu-
ation certificate. The Capital One Rocks and Rings program visits participating schools, taking over the gym as classes take turns visiting for sessions of fun and instruction involving various drills and other activities. Unique indoor floor curling equipment is used to provide a true curling experience without requiring ice. Originating in England, this indoor form of curling, sometimes referred to as kurling, is spreading throughout Europe as well as Canada. It was originally conceived as a way for persons with disabilities to curl but now the sport has grown to include students and seniors. It was in the year 2000 that John
Bennett was asked by his son to think up a sport that disabled people could enjoy. It was while watching the curling world championships on television that Mr. Benett came up with the idea of his indoor version of the game. He invented a discus (stone) with a handle and bearings so that it could slide along the surface. He also developed vinyl mats for use as targets. This mats have red, white and blue rings, just like the rings in ice curling. This form of indoor curling is now played all over the world, with even national and international competitions. It may eventually become a paralympic sport.

High school in plans JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com
A new public secondary school in Stittsville is included in a proposed capital project priority listing for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. The listing is to be submitted to the Ontario Ministry of Education by Jan. 28. Estimated cost of this new high school is $48.5 million, with the year 2013 suggested for completion of the project. This is the only high school included in the listing which covers the years 2011 to 2015. The draft proposal identifies Stittsville as a growing suburban community in which there are current two public elementary schools with another one now under construction. Ottawa-Carleton District School Board high school
students in Stittsville currently attend South Carleton High School in Richmond for grades 9 through 12. Both A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary School in Stittsville and Goulbourn Middle School, which is on the outskirts of Stittsville, serve Stittsville’s grade seven and eight students. The Board wants to build a new high school in Stittsville in order to provide Stittsville students with local access to secondary school instruction. The Board does suggest that one possibility for the new school would be establishing it as a grade 7 to grade 12 school. The Board’s draft listing also includes proposed construction of a new elementary school in the Kanata West area. Cost is estimated at $14.1 million, with the year 2015 suggested as the year of completion for the school.
Garbage review in Richmond SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The city of Ottawa is bringing its solid waste service level review to Richmond. City of Ottawa representations will be at the February meeting of the Richmond Village Association to present the different service level options under consideration at present and to receive feedback and input on the proposed different service level options. This is part of a citywide consultation process being undertaken by the city. The city is reviewing residential garbage and recycling collection services and wants public input on the options being considered. The collection of blue and black box material and the collection of green bin organic and re-
sidual waste (garbage) are all under consideration. The results of this consultation process will help form any staff recommendations which go before Ottawa city council on this issue. These recommendations might involve changes to waste collection programs. These decisions are needed before the city enters into negotiations of waste collection contracts with private contractors. The city will be seeking input on how it can improve the collection of garbage, recycling and green bins. The February meeting of the Richmond Village Association, which is also its annual general meeting, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 1 starting at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church on McBean Street in Richmond.
