A career and motherhood can coexist. This is what momcafe thinks. And the guest speakers at the Jan. 28 hockey-themed momcafe event in Stittsville provided lots of proof that this true. Both Erin Crowe, who is executive vice-president and chief financial officer of Senators Sports & Entertainment, and Theresa Dostaler, a self-employed entrepreneur and founder of the facebook site “Hockey Mom in Canada,” confirmed that a woman can have a successful career and also be a mother. It’s all a matter of balance and setting priorities in your life. Erin Crowe grew up in Nepean and joined the Ottawa Senators organization in 1996, See HOCKEY, page 5

A BUDGET CUTTER? Could city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri, right, be possibly looking for something with which to cut the city budget this year as he listens to the features of a DeWalt 12 inch Double Bevel Compound Mitre Saw as explained by Scott Switzer, left, a Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse staff member, after the Hazeldean Road store’s grand opening ceremony on Thursday morning, Jan. 27?

Eight coloured handprints on a poster of thanks. Nothing else needed to be said. For these children’s handprints were those of youngsters at Chrysalis House in Kanata, the recipient again this year of the funds raised by Sacred Heart Catholic High School students in
their “White Ribbon Campaign” protesting violence against women. And what better way to commemorate the tragic shooting of 14 women at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal than in helping being part of the solution by raising funds to help out Chrysalis House, a shelter for abused women and their children in Kanata. It was on Dec. 6, 1989 that a gunman killed 14 women in a shooting rampage at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, motivated by anti-feminist views. The anniversary of the event is now commemorated in Canada with a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women. Violence against women involves an intentional pattern of behaviours to establish and maintain power and control over a woman’s thoughts, beliefs, conduct and how she lives her life. The different types of abuse can include but are not limited to physical and sexual violence, threats, isolation, economic deprivation, attacks on a woman’s personality and mind and coercive use of children.

From page 1 This is what Sacred Heart students involved with the school’s “White Ribbon Campaign” last December to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women did in donating the funds raised to a shelter for abused women and their children. In the first week of December, students involved with the “White Ribbon Campaign” visited all of the classes in the Stittsville school, offering fellow students white ribbons to wear as a sign of support for the elimination of violence against women in society, in return for a donation. The ribbons represent the desire of the wearer not to remain silent about violence against women. A total of $624.69 was raised through this “White Ribbon Campaign” with the proceeds being donated to Chrysalis House. It was at the presentation ceremony for this donation that Chrysalis House presented the students with a “Thank You” poster which featured eight coloured handprints, those of children who are residing at Chrysalis House currently as a result of abusive situations. The poster thanked the students for making a difference and helping to speak out against violence against women by their actions in the “White Ribbon Campaign.” Chrysalis House is a safe and secure 25 bed home in Kanata that is a place where a woman can go to protect herself and her children from violence and abuse in the home. Firefighters managed to have the fire under control at 12:21 p.m. The firefighters were eventually able to take the remaining metal outside of the building and then ventilated the building.

Your Realtors... For Life
You’d think that with all of the cold and wintry weather lately, skunks would be hibernating in their dens and would not be out and about. But this has not been the case. Just ask those who have attended the last two Thursday night euchres at the Lions Hall in Stittsville. They have seen a number of skunks. On Thursday, Jan. 20, with 13 tables in play, there were two skunks from the evening’s play. Dawnean Featherston and Ada Gawlik were the players who experienced these skunks. It was no better, skunk-wise, on Thursday, Jan. 27, with two skunks again showing up, thanks to Heather Boyd and Judy Creelman. But there was lots more going on at these euchres than just the appearance of some skunks. On Thursday, Jan. 20, Sylvia Yates had the hot hand as she finished in first place. Second place was a tie between Wade Mordy and Carol Brown. Margaret Hobbs had the hidden score while Ken Campbell took home the booby prize. Theresa Casey won the door prize. Georgette St. John won the first 50/50 draw while Sylvia Yates (yes, it was a good evening for her) won the second 50/50 draw. On Thursday, Jan. 27, with 14 tables in play, John Dawson took first place. Once again, there was a tie for second place, this time involving Bonnie Sue West and Bev Morley. Theresa Casey had the hidden score while Judy Creelman won the booby prize. Nancy Codd captured the door prize while the 50/50 draw winners were Cleo Murray and Heather Boyd. There is a euchre party every Thursday at the Lions Hall in Stittsville, hosted by the Lions Club, with the action getting underway at 7:30 p.m. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend and enjoy an evening of fun and socializing playing euchre. Thursday, Feb. 10 is going to be a special evening as it will be a celebration of Valentine’s Day. Those attending are urged to wear something red in keeping with the Valentine’s theme. Who knows – perhaps someone will arrived dressed up like a red bower.
their days and to manage any conflicts which might arise. While admitting that she used to be a fanatic gymnasium user, this has waned somewhat and although she did train for and run a half marathon last spring and hopes to do so again this spring, she is now just trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “Just trying to be active is really important,” Ms. Crowe said. “I really feel strongly that you can be a successful parent and have a career,” she said but noted that a person has to figure out the priorities involved, understanding that these priorities will change at different times in life. She said that working and having a family is not for everyone and some may

From page 1 She moved up over the years to become an executive vice-president, chief financial officer and alternate member of the National Hockey League’s Board of Governors. She told the 30 in attendance at the momcafe “Hockey Mamas” event at the Wildwood Steak & Chophouse at the Amberwood Golf and Country Club in Stittsville that a person’s life does change when children arrive on the scene. This is when decisions have to be made of when to focus on family and when to focus on work. “Competing priorities continue to be a bit of a struggle,” she admitted about her own life which now sees her not only as a career person but also as a mother of a four year old and a two and a half year old. Competing priorities directly impact the work-family life balance, Ms. Crowe said, admitting that she is reasonably happy with the work/family life balance that she now has in her life. She admitted that a big factor in balancing her family and work lives for herself and her husband has been the employment of a nanny whom she described as “vital to making our lives work right now.” She said that she is able to combine her job and family life because she has someone at her home to help her. “It’s a luxury but it really does work for us,” she said about her nanny and her family. Another tool which she and her husband use is the use of the Google calendar on which they both put whatever commitments that they have. They have found that this helps them both plan out

life where both she and her husband were working hard but had a young family. “We had no balance, we had no time,” Ms. Dostaler said, noting that both she and her husband missed spending more time with their children and due to their hectic schedules, never enjoyed a good meal together, instead eating less nutritious fast food. She said that it comes down to a question of core values and a person’s identify. “What is really important?” is the question that people in this situation must ask themselves, she said. “There are options other than staying in a place you don’t want to be,” she said, noting that she herself took her skills from the workplace and started her own home-based consulting business, using the skills that she knew that she had. She now has flexible hours and can spent more time with her children. She also was able to fulfill her dream of learning about social media and started her “Hockey Mom in Canada” facebook site which now is a network of over 5,600 hockey moms. Indeed, while she started this to create a community of hockey moms and not as a business, there may now soon be an opportunity to transform it into a business based on advertising. “You have to follow your core values,” she said, while advising others to trust themselves. “Don’t sell yourself short,” she added. Tara Azulay of Carp operates the momcafe Ottawa chapter (phone 613-4700171) which has now hosted three events which feature inspirational speakers and which allow networking with other like-minded moms. It is a way to connect professionally inspired moms which was founded in Vancouver in 2007 and is expanding across the country.

make different choices in life than she has made. “Do what makes you happy,” she said as advice for those wondering whether they should combine work and family or should become a stay-at-home mom. Those at the event got a similar message from Theresa Dostaler, a former Ottawa resident who relocated with her family to Madoc and now operates her own home-based consulting business, “Synergy Research and Evaluation Consulting,” has founded the facebook site “Hockey Mom in Canada” which hopes to be the largest network of hockey moms in the world, and indeed is a hockey mom herself, with two children in the sport, meaning being in a rink from four to six times a week. “It’s a hockey household but we love it,” she told those at the momcafe event. Scottish culture in Stittsville for Robbie Burns Night SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The Lions Hall in Stittsville became an island of Scottish culture last Saturday evening, Jan. 29. It was the annual Robbie Burns Night hosted by the Stittsville United Church, complete with a pipe and drum band, appropriate singing, highland dancing and music, a dinner complete with “warm reeking haggis” and, of course, the recitation of Robbie Burns’ famous “Ode to a Haggis.” Gordon Hagar served as the master
City of Ottawa Councillor Reports By Shad Qadri, Councillor Ward Six Stittsville City of Ottawa
of ceremonies for the event while Rev. Grant Dillenbeck led the saying of “The Selkirk Grace.” The Arnprior McNab Pipes and Drums not only piped in the haggis but also performed as part of the post-dinner program. Wayne Spears was the soloist for the evening while Doll Creelman was the pianist. Michaela McConnell of Stittsville performed several highland dances. Steve McDermid proposed the toast to the lasses at the end of the evening while Shelley Hagar responded with a toast to
the laddies. The evening ended with everyone singing “Auld Lang Syne,” Robbie Burns’ universal work of farewell. Robbie Burns is considered Scotland’s national poet as he often wrote about the struggle of the Scots against foreign overseers such as the British. But his appeal over the years is much wider
than this, probably because of the passion that went into his poems and songs which speak fiercely for the downtrodden everywhere. He wrote about the everyday lives of the people he knew. Indeed, how else can you explain the centuries old popularity of “Ode to a Haggis,” a poem about an item of food.
PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE
Wildpine Court site application
the safest in the world.
I am encouraging residents to attend a public meeting that is schedule for Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 in the upstairs hall of the Stittsville and District Community Centre (Stittsville Arena). The meeting is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
City staff receives well-deserved recognition
An applicant is proposing to build a four storey condominium complex with 64 dwelling unites. Parking is being proposed for both an underground structure and an on surface lot located at the rear of the building for a total of 68 parking spaces. The main entrance to the building and parking areas is planned to be on Wildpine Court. The site design features landscaping adjacent to the proposed complex and a small parkette at 1335 Stittsville Main directly adjacent to the intersection of Stittsville Main Street and Wildpine Court. To view the plans of what is being proposed, it is crucial to attend this meeting. In attendance will be city planners who will be there to answer any questions and handle any concerns residents may have regarding the project. For more information on the project, please visit my website at www. shadqadri.com. City performs well in municipal benchmarking initiative The Ontario Municipal Benchmarking Initiative (OMBI) 2009 Performance Benchmarking Report comparing the performance of 15 Ontario municipalities, including Ottawa, has been released. This report presents three years worth of performance results (2007, 2008 and 2009) for 27 key public facing services and describes some factors that influence the delivery of these services. The City of Ottawa provides all 27 services and has provided data to support all of the OMBI measures for these services. The survey indicates that Ottawa compares well to the other Ontario municipalities measured in the report. Highlights of the report indicate that among all the OMBI municipalities Ottawa has the lowest rate of residential structural fires in rural areas and the second lowest fire operating cost in rural areas. Further, Ottawa continues to be among the safest large urban centres in Ontario, with the rate of reported violent incidents consistently well below the OMBI median. The reported number of violent criminal code incidents (647.5) per 100,000 population for 2009 was 31 per cent below the median. The reported number of total non-traffic criminal code incidents (4,358.9) per 100,000 population has dropped 16 per cent since 2007 and is 17 per cent below the median for 2009. The City also continues to be a leader in recreational programming, investing in culture, and providing timely and efficient service in determining social assistance eligibility. The report also indicates that the City needs to improve the amount of solid waste being diverted from landfill sites. However, the 33 per cent diversion rate quoted in the OMBI report has improved substantially to 42 per cent in 2010 with the implementation of the new green bin organic waste program. Ottawa has the second highest number of conventional transit trips per capita in service area (104.8 trips) and has the highest passenger trips per in-service vehicle hour (51.32 trips). The report shows that Ottawa’s transit vehicles again this year provide the highest number of trips in one hour among all the OMBI municipalities. The City can also boast one of the lowest costs for the treatment of its drinking water. Ottawa’s drinking water has already been rated by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) as being among
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and say thank you to several City staff who recently received recognition with Equity and Diversity awards which were presented during the January 26th City Council meeting. This was the fourth edition of this annual award that recognizes individual City employees or teams who show commitment to fostering a positive and respectful work environment and to providing services in a manner that respects the diversity of the residents of the city of Ottawa. The individual awards were shared by Penny Burton from Ottawa Public Health was awarded for her outstanding work in increasing diabetes awareness and prevention both within and outside the aboriginal community and. Mohamud Hassan from the Community and Social Services Department was also honoured for his tremendous efforts in improving access to employment opportunities for visible minority youth.

The team Equity and Diversity Award went to six members of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department (see our photo of the week) who played a significant role in delivering community and recreation programs that focus on greater outreach and involvement of disadvantaged groups in our community. These individuals are what we at the City aspire to be and I thank them for their hard work and dedication for providing residents in the Nation’s Capital with equal opportunities to succeed and be part of their community. Please attend budget consultations This is a reminder to all residents that is very important to attend either one or all of the five scheduled public consultations for the 2011 draft budget. Your input is crucial in the following weeks and when it comes time for Council to make a decision regarding the budget. All consultations are from 7 pm to 9 pm and will take place at the following locations: Tuesday February 22 at the Nepean Sportsplex Halls A/B, 1701 Woodroffe Avenue; Wednesday, February 23 at Holy Trinity Catholic School, 180 Katimavik Road, Kanata; Thursday, February 24 at the Stuart Holmes Arena, 5660 Main Street, Osgoode; Monday, February 28 at the Shenkman Arts Centre (Theatre), 245 Centrum Boulevard, Orleans and Thursday, March 3 at City Hall (Andrew Haydon Hall) 110 Laurier Avenue West, Ottawa. Hydro Ottawa update On January 24th, Hydro Ottawa held an open house at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex for residents to provide an update on what is being planned to improve service in Stittsville and to answer questions and concerns from residents. If you were unable to attend, a copy of the presentation is available in the Power Outages update section of my website at www.shadqadri.com. Also, a wrap up of the meeting will be available on my website and outreach progra, very soon, so please continue to check the website for updates. Always listening and acting on your concerns As your Councillor, I always welcome your keen input and ideas on how we can improve Stittsville. Please contact our office anytime by phone at 613-580-2476 or by e-mail at Shad.Qadri@ottawa.ca. My ward office is located in the Goulbourn Recreation Complex, located at 1500 Shea Road. Is there a will for youth centre?
There is no greater responsibility on a community than ensuring the safety and development of its youth. And yet now for too long here in Stittsville, as in other communities, we have let the schools and recreation programs handle the youth challenges of the teen years. There are some church efforts but these do not reach the mainstream for the most part. There has over the years been continual discussion about the need for a youth or teen centre but these discussions never go far. The stumbling block is mainly financial in terms of where the funds would come from to set up, staff and maintain such a centre. But there is also some bias against establishment of such a centre, with
some worried that it would be a centre for drug dealing or worse. Yet, imagine how you would feel if you did not have your home to go to, if you always had to stay at a friend’s home or simply roam the streets and public spots of the community. Perhaps this is something like today’s youth in Stittsville fee – they do not have a spot to call their own, a place where they can go and simply be themselves. There is, of course, always the problem of where such a facility would be located. Right now, Youth Connexion, a community-based youth program focussed on leadership, is using the basement area of the Pretty Street Community Centre as a base. But this does not have
the long term potential that is needed. We think that there is a perfect location for a youth centre in Stittsville, namely the former LCBO premises at Crossing Bridge Square. It sits relatively isolated at the plaza, off by itself, and yet close enough that youth centre participants would have ready and easy access to nearby food spots. It is also central in the community and easily accessed by public transit. In addition, it is in the centre of a commercial area and so removed from any residential areas that might be or feel they are impacted by such a facility. The appropriate premises, in our view, are there. But is there a will for Stittsville to become a model in establishing a viable, active community youth centre?

Wayne Gretzky is 50 and how old do you feel? The signposts of ageing are many and they get more comical as you go along. You remember becoming a teenager, bidding farewell to all that childish behaviour, and welcoming new varieties of even more childish behaviour. You remember being old enough to drink legally, old enough to leave home for work or university, an adult. This is perhaps the first feeling of being old. Then your baby sister goes off to university. Then you become one of those older people you used to smirk at as a teenager — a married person, with a mortgage and a job, who stays in on weeknights. Where does the time go? you ask. But the process has barely begun. You have children of your own and that’s around the same time that you notice that the police officers are no longer older than you. The children become teenagers and you begin sounding like your parents.
CHARLES GORDON I’m old, you think. And it’s all downhill from there. Soon, you are older than the police officers, older than the minister at the church, older than the dentist. Your children grow up, turn 30. You become a grandparent. You take naps. Surely it can’t get older than this. But it can. Last week you open up the newspaper and it says Wayne Gretzky has turned 50. So there you are. You, as a grown-up, watched Gretzky as a kid. Now Gretzky feels old. How does that make you feel? Perhaps it is not as shocking to you as all that. In this Facebook era, people are reconnecting with old friends, going to high school reunions,
where they are surrounded by old people. Somehow they sense that they are not kids any more. Any neither is Wayne Gretzky. He is older than the sportswriters now, older than his dentist. But there is a reassuring point in all this. Wayne Gretzky is 50 but he is not irrelevant. Almost all of the dozens of records he set still stand. Someone broke one the other day but it was an obscure thing — most career overtime goals, or something like that. For the rest of it, he is still the guy. But so are you, when you think about it. Your old records still stand. Sure, they are different kinds of records. But no one flips pancakes the way you do, or finds a parking space, or empties the dishwasher. You can climb ladders like nobody’s business and you never run out of windshield washer fluid. Just because Gretzky is 50 doesn’t mean he’s finished either. He can look forward to future accomplishments, such

as the kind of stuff you’ve been doing. You hold the record for reading the most consecutive Dr. Seuss stories aloud. You could be the best at remembering the names of bit players in western movies. You can identify any car made in the last 50 years. You scored six goals goals that time, when you were older than Gretzky, at the neighbourhood rink. You saved a cat. No one tells a joke like you do. And you just get better the older you are. You can make a soufflé. You can play Beatles songs on the recorder. You can watch four games on TV simultaneously. You can figure out what’s
wrong with the computer. And you know how all those sports columnists have been writing about what a considerate guy Gretzky is? Well, you’re pretty considerate too. You hold the record, shared with a number of others, for never forgetting an anniversary. You are absolutely terrific at putting things into alphabetical order. The Sudoku is child’s play to you, mostly. You make great things out of leftovers. No one is better than you at finding the bright side of things. No one can find a lost ball the way you can. Maybe when Wayne Gretzky gets to be old he’ll have stuff like this to brag about too.

Larry Monuk takes over as president of Richmond Agricultural Society JOHN BRUMMELL john.brummell@metroland.com
Larry Monuk is the new president of the Richmond Agricultural Society. He takes over from Sarah Farrell who becomes the immediate past president. Gerd Lohmann, who had been second vice-president, moves up to become first vice-president, filling the spot vacated by Mr. Monuk as he moved on to become president. Bob Bell has become the new second vice-president. This changing of the guard, as it were, happened at the Society’s annual general meeting in Richmond on Tuesday, Jan. 25. The meeting saw the election of several new directors as well as the re-election of a number of directors whose two year terms had expired. A number of directors are also starting the second year of their two year term. Three directors who have decided to step down from the Fair Board this year are Freda Dolan, Kim Foster and Garry Montgomery.
Two junior directors, Eric Treboutat and Peter Treboutat, have decided to step down from their positions this year. However, one new junior director is joining the Society, namely Matthew Noxon. There are five junior directors who will be continuing this year. The annual general meeting saw the president of the President’s Trophy to 2010 Fair recipient Curtis Stuyt of Richmond. This trophy, donated by 1990 Richmond Fair president Edward Findlay, goes to the exhibitor who accumulates the highest number of points in the grain and forage crop classes at the Richmond Fair each year. In her president’s report at this meeting, Sarah Farrell noted that gate admissions were up for the 2010 Fair thanks to the good weather as well as the program presented. She paid special mention to the new mechanical bull ride attraction that proved popular as did the lumberjack show and the Milord Entertainment show in the Kiddyland area. She also praised the 2010 Fair’s Agricultural Awareness
program for students which provided to be very successful.
City of Ottawa Rideau-Goulbourn ward councillor Scott
Moffatt was the guest speaker at this annual general meeting.

Mayor presents citation, chain of office at assembly She’s a leader, she’s a doer, she’s a good friend. Even current Ottawa mayor Jim Watson calls her “a kind and caring person.” So why shouldn’t she be the mayor? And that’s just what happened at a Goulbourn Middle School assembly on Friday, Jan.
he ceremoniously presented to Hannah as well, letting her wear this traditional symbol of mayoral power and authority. In doing so, he did limit her term of office, facetiously saying that she could be “Mayor for a Minute.” The mayor’s appearance at the assembly and his presentation of the citation and mayor’s chain of office to Hannah was
the highlight of the school assembly attended by about 450 students, their teachers and a number of special guests who gave testimony to Hannah’s efforts to help others and make a difference in her community. Mayor Watson, in his remarks, summarized what he had heard from the previous speakers outlining Hannah’s involvement in her school and community with

the simple statement that “she’s a kind and caring person.” He particularly noted that Hannah’s kindness extended even to complete strangers and that while she had raised substantial funds to combat juvenile diabetes, it is her little gestures involving others that he views as really important and merited her receipt of the Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award. The mayor’s sentiments about Hannah’s outstanding qualities were echoed by city of Ottawa Rideau-Goulbourn ward councillor Scott Moffatt who told those at the assembly that is it amazing what Hannah has done in terms of leadership and helping others. He said that Hannah is a role model not only for young people but for everyone in society. Councillor Moffatt added that if as a city councillor he can be even half as effective a leader as Hannah, then he will consider himself successful. The tributes to Hannah at the assembly began with Sharon Law, Hannah’s bus driver and the person who instigated Hannah’s nomination as an Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year. It was particularly moving when she told how when her son was gravely ill and in hospital, Hannah, although she had never met him, had prepared a giant card which was signed by every student at the school. This was an example of but one of the many things that Hannah has done to brighten the lives of others. Indeed, Ms. Law’s son, who has now recovered, was in attendance at the assembly and his wave to the crowd at the mention of his attendance was like an exclamation point to what his mother had just said – that Hannah is a very special person. Emotions continued to soar at the assembly when the next speaker, Michaela Noffke of Stittsville who was Hannah’s dance teacher for five years when Hannah was involved in competitive dancing and now considers herself a close friend took to the podium. “She is a true friend, above all definitions of the term,” Ms. Noffke said, her voice breaking with emotion, praising Hannah as a person who has proven that she can do anything to which she turns her hand. Next to praise Hannah was her teacher at her former school, Richmond Public School, Bruce Harvey, who received a thunderous welcome from the assembled students, many of whom he had taught at Richmond Public School. Usually the fitness apparatus at the new Curves facility in Stittsville will be helping women tone their muscles and burn up calories as they go through a customized 30 minute workout. But on Monday afternoon, Jan. 31, two of these apparatus were playing a very different role at the new Curves studio facility at the Stittsville Shopping Centre (Shoppers Drug Mart plaza) in Stittsville. They were the bookends, holding up the purple ribbon that was stretched between them, all ready to be cut to mark the official opening of the facility. And just after 3 p.m., Megan Cornell, president of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce, which covers Stittsville as well as Goulbourn, West Carleton and Kanata, cut the purple ribbon – the new Curves in Stittsville was officially open. has been involved with the campaign since it started five years ago in 2007. And all of the funds raised by the campaign are directed to animal shelters. In the case of the Global Pet Foods store in Stittsville, the funds raised in this year’s campaign will be going to the Arnprior and District Humane Society. And just how does this “Show Us Your Heart campaign work? Well, people simply have to drop into the store and donate a dollar (or more). This gives the person the opportunity to write a name, either their own or their pet’s name, on a heart that will then be posted in the store’s window or on a wall. No purchase is necessary.

From page 16 What is great about this campaign that one dollar of every donation will be matched by a one dollar corporate donation by Global Pet Foods. And it gets even better. Every donor will have the chance to win a one year’s supply of Hill’s Science Diet pet food. There is also the opportunity to donate through Facebook and PayPal. Anyone who does this will have the opportunity to win one of five $100 Global Pet Foods gift certificates. Richard Higgs, owner of the Global Pet Foods store in Stittsville, noting that the store’s windows were filled with the donation hearts last year, says that donors know that the funds are going to a good cause about which pet owners are passionate, namely helping sick and needy pets. This year the funds raised at the Stittsville store are going to the Arnprior and District Humane Society. This is a change from last year when

Lowe’s opens with ‘board cutting’
Jim’s HI TECH
AUTO REPAIRS INC. Serving Your Community Since 1989
john.curry@metroland.com
City of Ottawa mayor Jim Watson admits he has been to many Board meetings of one sort or another. But on Thursday, Jan. 27, he experienced his first “board cutting,” slicing through a wooden board emblazoned with the message “Lowe’s Grand Opening.” And the mayor performed this grand opening ceremo-
nial “board cutting” using a good old fashioned hand saw, rejecting the option of a power saw which he quipped might be dangerous in his hands. Assisted by local councillors Shad Qadri, Marianne Wilkinson and Allan Hubley, the mayor zipped through the board cutting as if he were in fact using a power saw. Of course, it helped that much of the board had already been pre-
cut, leaving only a small portion that needed the mayor’s sawing effort. This all happened in “Aisle 19” in the lumber section of the new 103,000 square foot Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse in the new Grant Crossing shopping area on the north side of Hazeldean Road between the Carp River and the Iber Road/Huntmar Road intersection in Stittsville.

Gathered around the hand saw that city of Ottawa mayor Jim Watson used for the “board cutting” grand opening ceremony at the new Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse at the new Grant Crossing shopping area on Hazeldean Road in Stittsville are, from left to right, Lowe’s district manager Dave Bagler; city of Ottawa Kanata South ward councillor Allan Hubley; mayor Watson; city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri; city of Ottawa Kanata North ward councillor Marianne Wilkinson; store manager Kyle Pickett; and Lowe’s Companies Canada president Alan Huggins.
It was a big event, no doubt, for Lowe’s itself. Among those involved in the “board cutting” ceremony were not only store manager Kyle Pickett and district manager Dave Bagler but also the president of Lowe’s Companies Canada, Alan Huggins who opted to attend this grand opening on Hazeldean Road over grand openings at two other new stores on the same day, one in Kingston and one in Waterloo. This is Lowe’s second store in the Ottawa area and 24th in Canada, all opened in the past three years. Mr. Huggins, the president, noted that this new store represents a $30 million dollar investment in the local community, resulting in the creation of 150 instore jobs as well as many jobs in the recent construction phase of the project. Store manager Kyle Pickett, who was MC for the “board cutting” ceremony, commented that a lot of blood, sweat and tears had gone into getting the new store ready. See LOWE’S, page 19

na to become the second largest home improvement retailer in the world, including being the seventh largest retailer in the United States. In 1982, Lowe’s had its first billion dollar sales year as do-ityourself homeowners starting shopping there. The modern Lowe’s began in 1994 when its new store expansion consisted only of stores larger than 85,000 square feet in size. Lowe’s, which now opens a new store on average every week, opened its first store in Canada in 2007. Lowe’s stores stock 40,000 products with thousands more available by special order. Lowe’s now has more than 1,700 stores in the United States, Canada and Mexico, attracting an estimated 15 million shoppers each week.
From page 17 Mr. Higgs made the decision to direct the funds to the Arnprior and District Humane Society this year not only because the Stittsville store is the closest Global Pet Foods outlet to Arnprior and thus attracts a number of customers from that area but also because the Arnprior and District Humane Society is a relatively small non-profit organization that needs help, particularly since it is a “no kill” shelter that rescues lost, stray or abandoned pet animals. As a “no kill” shelter, it inevitably faces veterinary expenses that challenge its budget. In addition, the Arnprior and District Humane Society does provide service in the Stittsville area. Mr. Higgs also operates two other Global Pet Foods stores

The Arnprior and District Humane Society offers protection, shelter, food, medical attention and loving care to stray, abused and unwanted animals. This past December, the shelter had 120 pets in its care. Over the past five years, the “Show Us Your Heart” campaign has raised over $150,000 for shelters across Canada. “It’s one of the biggest events we have during the course of the year,” Mr. Higgs says about the campaign. Locally, last year, it resulted in the store’s windows being filled with the hearts symbolizing donations. During the campaign, in-store staff will be wearing red “Show Us Your Heart” t-shirts to further publicize the fundraising and to help convince customers to make a donation. This is an example of the Lowe’s commitment to supporting community organizations. Mayor Watson, in his remarks just before the “board cutting,” thanked Lowe’s for investing in the community by opening the store and for being a good corporate citizen by making the donation to the Education Foundation of Ottawa. The last five months have been quite a roller coaster of emotions for all of us with the death of our parents, Doug & Marilyn Davis, so close together. We would not have gotten through this without all the love and support of our family, friends and our great community. To the grandsons, you guys did a great job and would have made Granny and Grandpa proud. To all the people who brought food, sent flowers, made donations and just helped us get through this difficult timeThank You. We would also like to thank the church choir and David George for singing Mom and Dad’s favorite songs. To the ladies of UCW, the luncheons were delicious and so greatly appreciated. To Rev. Carla Van Delen: Thank you for your compassion, kind words and meaningful service for Mom and for Dad. A special thank you to Gary Thompson for giving Dad such a beautiful send off, and to Isabel Thompson for your witty but emotional eulogy for Mom. To Aunt Lorna, We don’t know what we would have done without you! To Sheila and Laurie: Thank you for all the special meals you made Mom and Dad. Also, thank you for the wonderful suppers between the wakes. John Curry: The write up you did for Mom and Dad was amazing and will be treasured for years to come. Bev Saunders and Tubman staff: Thank you for all your guidance, patience, support and direction during and after the passing of Mom and Dad. We are so fortunate to have such wonderful family and friends. The sky is now brighter with two more shining stars. We loved them lots and miss them more.

The site is built on 5 principles. It is inclusive, not only of different professions, departments or programs, but of our patients, visitors and community. It is bilingual, so that everything is available in English and French. It is accessible, whether you are visually impaired or not. It is dynamic; inviting visitors to share feedback and patient stories so we can always improve.

We actually devoted hours of class time to learn about search engines, web-sites and messaging. Today, four-year olds can do this with no instruction. But we were still asking: what is the art of the possible? What will communications look like thanks to the internet? They would be instant. They would force real-time dialogue. They would become brief, bite-sized, “user-friendly”. They would change people’s expectations of good communications.
Finally, it is patient and user-centered. For instance, visitors can use the Directions and Maps section of the site to plan their itinerary from home, to hospital, back home. They can search our physician directory alphabetically, by name or specialty. And they can search information about programs, departments or clinics by keyword. For the first time, users can also follow us on Twitter, at OttawaHospital, and Facebook, on The Ottawa Hospital Facebook Group. We will use these tools to inform the community of important news, as well as maintain an ongoing dialogue about how best to serve our patients. Don’t just take our word for it. Visit www.ottawahospital.on.ca and tell us what you think.
All of that, and more, has come true. People of all generations and service providers from all sectors have embraced the internet, social media, and social networking. Until recently, however, The Ottawa Hospital had been slow to embrace these changes.

Professor Pierre Bélanger taught New Media at the University of Ottawa, in 1994. The internet, web-sites and instant messaging was still considered novel. Perhaps even a little obscure.
BRAESIDE
PHONE (613) 623-4859
Our web-site looked like it had been built not long after 1994. It was hard to update, and didn’t allow instant communications. It didn’t seek out patient and visitor advice, nor promote dialogue. It was not “user-friendly”. In short, it did not live up to expectations of good communications.

Retirement Residence
Q
When should I change my battery?
Q
A
The only way of knowing is to take it to a garage to have it inspected. Batteries will normally last 5-7 years, but other factors may shorten this time significantly. Some examples are a bad alternator or cold temperatures. The cold will also cause the oil to thicken, making it harder for the engine to start. Installing a block heater will help prevent this.
My parents are worried about feeling institutionalized in a retirement home, how do I overcome their fear?
A
We’d love to have your family in for a tour. You will see the home like atmosphere that Walden Village has. You may come and go as you please, make new friends, learn new activities, enjoy social hours and exercise classes. Our residents move in with the comfort of their own furniture and pictures on the walls so it feels just like home!

Why is it important to avoid premature loss of baby teeth? Primary teeth first of all help your child digest probably and have normal development of his/her digestive tract. Primary teeth also hold the spot for the adult tooth to come. If a primary tooth is lost too soon it slows the development of the adult tooth. The neighboring teeth will shift into the missing tooth’s position blocking the growth of the adult tooth, causing a misaligned bite needing orthodontics in the future or causing jaw joint pain. Ask us about the importance of baby teeth, call us today.
