Winning the provincial seniors (50 and over) curling championship. Spectacular. Winning the Ontario masters (60 and over) curling championship. Awesome. Winning both in the same year and representing Ontario at two upcoming national championships. Priceless. Yes, it’s been quite a season so far for the ladies’ curling team skipped by Joyce Potter of the Rideau Curling Club which includes two curlers from the Richmond Curling Club, lead Brenda Moffitt and second Jennifer Langley. Diana Favel of the Rideau Curling Club is the rink’s third. See CURLERS, page 4

‘Simple Minds’ team wins Trivia Challenge Night JOHN CURRY

Are you or your partner suffering from

john.curry@metroland.com

Keep it simple, stupid – that famous KISS strategy. Who knows but that may have been what took the winning team to victory in the sixth annual Trivia Challenge Night hosted by the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville at the Lions Hall in Stittsville on Friday, Feb. 25. The team name, “Simple Minds,” indicates that simplicity may have been a core feature of this winning team which had competed in the Trivia Challenge Night for several years but only this year reached the pinnacle of victory. The team was in the running right from the start, tied for third after four of the tenquestion rounds with 27 points, just two behind the leading Gwen Foss’ Friends team and the Bridge Brigade’s 28 points. After seven rounds, the Simple Minds had moved up to a tie for second with Gwen Foss’ Friends at 53 points, one behind the leading Bridge Brigade. And Simple Minds completed its steady climb to the top by being all alone in first place with 77 points at the end of the ten rounds, one ahead of West Ottawa Rotary in second place and two in front of Bridge Brigade. The eight members of the Simple Minds team were Kathy McCaw, Jim McCaw, Dave LeBlanc, Janice LeBlanc, Randy Carson, Susan Carson, Paul Jay and Susan Mayo.

They generously donated their $500 winning cheque back to the Rotary Club which was directing all of the proceeds from the evening to its support of the Dave Smith Youth Drug Treatment Centre. But while the winners called themselves the “Simple Minds,” they were anything but to win this Trivia Challenge Night. Questions ranged from sports to music to obscure facts and information that were, well, trivia at its best. It required a wide ranging knowledge – nothing simple about that. The questions, read out by MC and Rotarian Steve Hunter, began with a hockey query (What city did the original Senators franchise move to in 1934? Answer: St. Louis) and then ranged through 99 more topics including music (What Ottawa band had a hit single ‘Signs” in 1972? Answer: Five Man Electrical Band) to obscure data (How old was Marco Polo when he set out to the east? Answer: 17) and little-known information (What race has a steep slope called Heartbreak Hill? Answer: Boston Marathon). And the questions kept coming – How many von Trapp children were there in the movie Sound of Music? Answer: 7, Who founded the city of Philadelphia? Answer: Not Rocky as was shouted out when the question was asked but rather William Penn, and what does the horizontal bar above a number mean in Roman numerals? Answer: Multiply by 1000. Stittsville businessman Phil Sweetnam received a standing ovation at the People’s Choice Business Awards gala in Kanata on Thursday, Feb. 24 when he was announced as the inaugural recipient of a new award, the President’s Award of Merit. This new award is to go to a person who has given service to the Kanata Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the People’s Choice Business Awards, as well as to the business community and the community in general. Describing Mr. Sweetnam as a “quiet hero and a “true gentleman, Kanata Chamber of Commerce president Megan Cornell noted that Mr. Sweetnam had been involved with the Kanata Chamber of Commerce since it assumed jurisdiction for the whole area which includes not only Kanata but also Goulbourn and West Carleton. “You are a cornerstone of the Goulbourn com-

munity and of the Chamber, she said in presenting the award to him. In his acceptance remarks, Mr. Sweetnam urged others in business in the area to serve on community committees, saying that they will find it truly rewarding and something that provides a valued perspective to life. A graduate in engineering from Queen’s University, he is currently serving as vice-chair of the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority. He has been a representative on the MVCA Board for three decades. He currently is chair of the public liaison committee that is working with Waste Management on issues related to the Carp Road landfill site. Mr. Sweetnam is a director on the executive of the Stittsville Village Association and also sits on the Boards of both the Goulbourn Museum and the Pinhey’s Point Historic Site. He has served on the executive of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce

and has been its political involvement advocate, urging the Chamber to host candidate meetings for various elections. He has also been involved with Watercan, a non-governmental agency that works to provide clean water in African countries. In recent years, the Sweetnam family has

provided scholarships to graduating high school students who are entering the engineering field. Indeed, Ms. Cornell, in her remarks about Mr. Sweetnam, noted his generosity. “He’s generous, always ready to provide donations to worthy causes, she noted about Mr. Sweetnam.

Trivia Challenge Night From page 2 So, not simple by any means for the 19 teams, a record number, which turned out for the event, brandishing names like JennCor, the Team Formerly Known as Prince, the Winning Team, the Brilliant Eight, Mixed Nuts, the Stittsville Village Aces and The Life of the Party which was the Royal Bank team which lived up to its name again this year, adding a lot of energy and laughter to the room as well as the celebration of a birthday, with pieces of the birthday cake even finding their way to the judges’ table. But far be it from saying that this influenced the actions of judges Shad Qadri, John Curry and Corrine Motluk – after all, The Life of the Party group trailed everyone in the early going and were never anywhere near the top throughout the evening. But they sure had fun. Door prizes and raffle prizes were given away during the evening. Since every raffle ticket number started with “081, it was not long before virtually everyone was shouting out in glee as

the winning number was read out – until, of course, the subsequent numbers on the ticket, the ones that really determined the winner, were read out. But this was all part of the happy atmosphere which pervaded the Lions Hall throughout the event. And the Roma Pizzeria pizza served at the mid-term break only added to the joy of the evening. In his opening remarks at the event, Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville president Leo Maiorino announced that the Stittsville Club has agreed to provide $30,000 in funding for the new Dave Smith Youth Drug Treatment facility which will be located near the Richardson Sideroad in West Carleton. A new 30-plus bed facility is to be built on the site by the year 2014. All of the proceeds from the Trivia Challenge Night are being directed to this project. In addition, the Stittsville District Lions Club, which ran the bar for the evening, is turning over a portion of the bar proceeds to the Rotary Club for this project as well.

Curlers off to two national competitions From page 1 And, of course, it’s far from over as the team is off to the Canadian Seniors Ladies’ Curling Championship in Digby, Nova Scotia starting on Saturday, March 19, followed by a trip to Winnipeg for the Canadian Masters Ladies’ Curling Championship beginning on Wednesday,

March 30. Indeed, this Joyce Potter foursome may just be making history in Canadian curling circles as the first rink to win two provincial curling titles in one season and play in two national championship competitions. The rink was formed last summer when Joyce Potter, who

is no stranger to provincial and national championships as she has played in the last 11 senior ladies’ provincial championships and won the Canadian seniors competition in 2005, was looking around for curlers to join her for a run at the provincial masters’ title which is for curlers 60 and over.

day and the games will be eight ends, not the ten ends of the seniors competition. This dual championship bound rink was feted at a sendoff celebration at the Richmond Curling Club on Wednesday, Feb. 23 where the Club’s lounge was filled with fellow curlers and well wishers, all there to celebrate the achievements of the rink so far this season and to wish them well in their quest for not one but two national championships. Richmond Curling Club president John Fraser, in serving as MC for the evening, noted the experience of the team members – Joyce Potter who has now competed at all five competitive levels of curling (school girl, ladies, intermediate, senior and now masters); Diana Favel who has won five provincial titles including two senior mixed championships and the senior women’s provincial title in 2009; Jennifer Langley who has been to a provincial competition in the past; and Brenda Moffitt, new to curling at the provincial level but a veteran club curler at Richmond. Richmond Curling Club historian Ronna Reddick reminded the Potter foursome of the significance of “team” – T for time dedicated to practice and also for the team’s talents; E for excellence and enjoying the experience; A for a winning attitude and accepting challenges; and M for the memories that will arise from the experience. The rink members also received gift bags from the club, filled with fun good luck goodies such as rubber bands for stretching their limits, a scalp massager to relieve tension, cotton balls for support and candles for sharing their light. She heard that Jennifer Langley of the Richmond Curling Club, whom she has played against over the years, was turning 60 and so she approached her about joining her rink. Jennifer readily agreed and suggested that Brenda Moffitt, another Richmond curler, be asked to join as well. Joyce had not curled against Brenda but accepted Jennifer’s recommendation and the rink was formed with the goal of aiming for the provincial masters’ title. But a strange thing happened on the way to this provincial masters’ competition in midFebruary. The rink entered the Ontario senior championship in mid-January, really as a warmup, practice session for the upcoming masters’ event. However, the team won the senior provincial championship at the Lindsay Curling Club event, defeating former world champion Marilyn Bodogh in the final. And then, in mid-February at Gravenhurst, the Potter group won the provincial masters title, making it two provincial titles in one season. And now the rink is off to two national competitions. The Canadian seniors ladies’ championship is happening in Digby, Nova Scotia from March 19-26 while the Canadian masters ladies’ championship will be held in Winnipeg from March 30 to April 5. It’s going to be quite a blitz of top level curling for the gang. In Digby, the team will be playing two games a day, with a total of 14 games possible if the team goes all the way. Then, after just a couple of days off, it will be off to Winnipeg for the national masters championship. This competition will be a little less strenuous with only one game per

values of hard work and practice, lots of practice. Skip Joyce Potter, in her remarks, noted that in the provincial seniors championship, the team was not only playing good teams but in the final had the pressure of being on television and playing former world champion Marilyn Bodogh. She praised lead Brenda Moffitt for having the game of her life in the final, playing a perfect centre guard in the extra end and then putting a stone right on the button. “She just makes shot after shot after shot,” she said about Jennifer Langley, her second. And also noted that Jennifer had become a great sweeper as well. She also explained that her third, Diana Favel, is the team’s catalyst as well as its most consistent shotmaker. Joyce Potter did not comment about herself but this oversight was remedied

der pressure. The celebration also included refreshments and two specially decorated cakes – one carrying the message “Seniors and Masters Champions, Wow” and the other offering the team congratulations for being provincial champions.

From page 4 The rink members also received bouquets of flowers, Richmond Curling Club 50th anniversary sweaters and Club pins to exchange at the upcoming competitions. Jennifer Langley, speaking on behalf of herself and Brenda, thanked their fellow Club members for their “overwhelming support.” She noted the billboard sign that had been placed at the front of the Curling Club, wishing them good luck at the upcoming national seniors event in Digby, Nova Scotia. She joked that because of the sign, people were even approaching her in the grocery store, asking for her autograph. She praised her Club mates for being such a great fan club, supporting Brenda and her as they enjoy their fantastic curling year. She said that the rink itself has a positive attitude and has espoused the

The Sacred Heart Huskies are champs. The Huskies defeated the Hillcrest Hawks 55-44 in the National Capital senior boys’ basketball AAA/AAAA championship game before a nearly full house at the Carleton University gym on Tuesday evening, Feb. 22. The Huskies are now off to the provincial AAAA championships in London next week. The Huskies did not waste any time in this championship game, jumping out into a 22-12 lead after the first quarter and leading 34-23 at half time. The only close time in the game was at the end of the third quarter when the Hawks had closed to within two points of the Huskies, trailing only 43-41. Early in the fourth quarter, the game remained close, with the Huskies leading 46-44 before Adam McKenna and then Vik Gill scored unanswered baskets to give the Huskies a 50-44 lead with five minutes to play. This is how it stayed until there was less than three minutes to play when Sean Stoqua of the Huskies sunk two foul

shots, making it 52-44 for the Huskies. The Huskies then went into a passing, ball possession offense with less than two minutes to go. This resulted in Hillcrest fouls, with Brandon Simpson adding one foul shot and Emmanuel Kwofie making two foul shots, making it 55-44 for the Huskies. The final seconds wound down on the clock with the Huskies in possession of the ball, passing it around and away from the Hawks. Keegan MacNeill led the Huskies scoring in this game with 14 points while Sean Stoqua and Vik Gill both added 13 points. Other point contributors for the Huskies in this game were Emmanuel Kwofie with 9 points, Brandon Simpson with 4 points and Adam McKenna with 2 points. Vik Gill led the team with 11 rebounds. Members of this gold medal winning championship Huskies team are Sean Stoqua, Lorne Wierenga, Brad Farish, Emmanuel Kwofie, John Paluch, keegan MacNeill, Brandon Simpson, Dalton King, Adam McKenna, Vik Gill, Connor MacLean and Wasem Khir. The team is coached by Tony House, Curtis Houlden and Jason Shoemaker.

There’s the RCMP musical ride, to be sure. A great spectacle. But equally impressive and spectacular is the musical ride that Alexandra Power of Stittsville is now on. On Sunday, Feb. 20, Alexandra, who is the daughter of Pat and Rick Power of Stittsville, was in London, Ontario to receive the Medal of Excellence from the Conservatory of Canada for having the highest mark in the province in her Level 5 piano exam, Contemporary Idioms Program. At the London ceremony, which honoured other provincial medal recipients in piano, wind instruments, voice and theory, Alexandra performed a piano rendition of “My Heart Will Go On” from the film “Titanic.” But Alexandra’s musical ride is not restricted to piano or to Conservatory of Canada exams. A grade 12 student at South Carleton High School in Richmond, she plays clarinet in the school’s senior concert band as well as both guitar and piano in the school’s senior jazz band. She is also a member of the Stittsville concert band and its ten-piece band as well. Alexandra plays clarinet in the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Senior Chamber Winds Ensemble which will be performing at this year’s Capital Tulip Fest. She will also be soon playing with the Ottawa All Star Band, a band composed of the best young musical talent

derived from the various Ottawa Carleton District School Board high schools. This All Star Band will be winding up with a public performance in early May. Alexandra’s dream is to become a performance musician, preferably a clarinetist. She is also now teaching herself how to play the tenor sax as well as she enjoys the challenge of learning new musical instruments. Right now, Alexandra is busy preparing for both her university auditions and her Royal Conservatory of Music Theory and Playing exams this spring. And while Alexandra is on quite a musical ride in her life these days, she has a lot more than music going on in her life. She has been involved in Guiding for 12 years now. Last fall she received the coveted Chief Commissioner’s Gold Award in Guiding at a ceremony at the Centrepointe Theatre in Nepean. She has received her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, a self-directed development program for young Canadians aged 14 to 25. It challenges young people to achieve personal goals in four program areas, namely community service, skills, physical recreation and adventurous journey. Alexandra has also accumulated almost 900 hours of community service through involved at the Carp Animal Hospital, as a volunteer at Winterlude and through performing her music at various seniors residences.

Famous band leaders of the golden big band era made musical appearances at the Stittsville Villa on Wednesday evening, Feb. 23. There was the music of Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Glenn Miller, among others, all played by the Main and Abbott Dance Band, a group associated with the Stittsville concert band, with the Villa’s lounge area filled with residents. The concert, entitled “For the Love of Swing, was a little over half an hour late in starting due to an unavoidable delay for a key band member but that only made the music sound even sweeter when the band got playing. Benny Goodman’s “Jersey Bounce was first up, setting the tone for the evening. Count Basie’s “Jumpin’ at the Wood Side was next and it went on from there. And as for Glenn Miller, his music was front and centre with such tunes as Chatanooga Choo Choo, Moonlight Serenade and In the Mood. Wow! The concert was more than just the music of the band leaders of the 40’s. For instance, the music of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass made an appearance with a rendition of “Wall Street Rag. The Main and Abbott Dance

Why not three top citizens? The Kanata Chamber of Commerce, which covers the areas of Kanata, Goulbourn and Stittsville and West Carleton, has wrapped up its annual People’s Choice Business Awards. It was once again a gala night where the awards were presented. There is no doubt that they are an appreciated award in the local business community, with all of the winners there to receive their awards. It was also refreshing to hear so many of the recipients say how much they enjoy being in business – it is obviously a labour of love for many. As in past years, there were winners in various categories for all three of the geographic areas covered by the Chamber. Thus, there were winners, for example, for best

restaurant in Kanata, in Goulbourn and in West Carleton. The three distinct communities served by the Chamber were all recognized for having their own outstanding restaurants. This distinction did not happen, though, for the Citizen of the Year Award. While this year’s selection of Citizen of the Year was an outstanding one in the person of Kathy LogsdailDowner, executive director of Friends of Hospice Ottawa, it is disappointing that the Chamber saw fit to move away from the geographic model of selection which has served the Chamber well in the past and which continues to be used for virtually all of the other categories of selection. It seems to us that Kanata,

Goulbourn (including Stittsville) and West Carleton are three distinct, separate and vibrant communities. This is recognized in the selection of the outstanding businesses in various categories; why, then, is it not the format used for selection of the Citizen of the Year as well. We need to honour citizenship and community effort as much as possible. And when there are three distinct communities involved, each with its local heroes and leaders, we fail to see why the Kanata Chamber of Commerce has opted to select only one Citizen of the Year for the whole Western Ottawa area instead of a Citizen of the Year in each of the three geographic areas served by the Chamber.

The aging demographic: hear it roar Watching people break out in revolt all over the Middle East, Canadians wonder when it will happen here. The answer is, it won’t, because, relative to other parts of the world, we don’t have that much to revolt about. On the other hand, we could speak up a bit more than we do now. Take, for example, seniors. We have been hearing for years about the coming power of the over-65 demographic. And suddenly it is here. The first wave of the baby boomers has turned 65. Those who got there first have been patiently waiting for reinforcements. Now they are here and many more are coming. The power is here. It just hasn’t been used yet. But there are issues where the voice of the over-65s could be raised. A nice test of the power of seniors would be the question of whatever it is that’s happening to buses in Ottawa these days. The specific are a bit hard to follow but the generalities

CHARLES GORDON follow a pattern that has been familiar for decades. It goes like this: OC Transpo faces declining ridership and revenues so it increases fares and cuts routes. For decades people have been telling OC Transpo that cutting service and raising fares is not the way to get more people to ride the bus. Some day it will sink in. Maybe the over-65s can help that process along. Everybody recognizes that having more people ride the buses is a public good. It reduces traffic, cuts pollution and so on. But more people will only ride the buses if the buses are there. It sounds like the likelihood of them being there is decreasing. This is where seniors could test their newly arrived political clout. The latest proposal

nixes the idea of a half-price fare for seniors. It adds a couple of free days, Monday and Friday, providing seniors travel after noon, an idea that has rightly been criticized as social engineering of a most condescending sort. Is this something to email your councillor about, or stage a protest at city hall, some Monday or Friday after noon? Maybe not. The cost issue is a good one, but it may not be paramount to many seniors. Not all are impoverished, nor do they want to be treated as if they are. More crucial is the question of route cuts. The Transpo planners want, as usual, to cut some routes, and those would not be the ones zooming from the outer ’burbs along the Transitway to downtown. No, the routes we will lose will be the ones that meander through residential neighbourhoods, the ones that take a while to get downtown but stop

close to where you live and, incidentally, take a lot of the neighbourhood kids to school and back. Those routes are the most vulnerable because they are the least cost-efficient, and you know what that means. It means efficiency first, you second. Another proposed efficiency is to reduce the number of stops for those routes that survive. The upshot is a longer walk to the bus, maybe a nice bit of exercise in the spring and summer, but not so great in the winter, and not great at all for those who don’t move as easily as they used to.

All this produces a great occasion for seniors to do some roaring and frighten a few city councillors and bureaucrats. The changes, as they have been outlined, are irrational, as usual, and seniors will feel it more than most. The idea of public transit is to get people out of their cars. That’s always a good idea. In the case of some seniors, it’s a very good idea. But people need to be given a reason to get out of their cars. So far, Transpo isn’t doing it. But the decision-makers should know that seniors, unlike younger folk, always vote. As long as they can get to the polls.

Sunday, Feb. 27 saw the Hollywood Oscars being front and centre. But Thursday, Feb. 24 it was the People’s Choice Business Awards of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce which took centre stage. The gala event at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata, emceed by Kurt Stoodley of the A Channel this year, saw eight awards presented to winning businesses in each of the three geographic areas served by the Kanata Chamber of Commerce – Goulbourn (Stittsville), West Carleton and Kanata. Friends of Hospice Ottawa, which operates a day hospice in Richmond and provides a number of palliative care related services throughout not only Goulbourn but western Ottawa, received the Community Supported Non-Profit Organization for Goulbourn. Saunders Farm of Munster was selected for the Tourism Business Award for Goulbourn. “There really is no better place to do business than in this part of the country,” Angela Saunders of Saunders Farm said in her acceptance remarks, accompanied by husband Mark Saunders. Saunders Farm is preparing for its 20th Halloween season this year. Blue Bamboo Yoga in the Jackson Trails Centre plaza in Stittsville won the Heath and Wellness Business Award for Goulbourn, a repeat winner. The New Business Award for Goulbourn went to Sonya Kinkade Design of Richmond. The win brought tears to Sonya Kinkade in her acceptance speech as she began explaining about following a new career path as an interior designer at her stage in life. After a huge from MC Kurt Stoodley, she resumed, thanking ev-

Napoli’s Café of Stittsville received the Best Restaurant Award for Goulbourn, with Bassel Khalil of Napoli’s telling everyone that the restaurant business is hard work but that it is gratifying when it results in an award like this one. Brown’s Your Independent Grocer of Stittsville received the Best Retail Business Award for Goulbourn. Owner Todd Brown, in his acceptance remarks, noted how fortunate he and his wife Sandra were to operate a business in such a wonderful community as Stittsville and Goulbourn and he echoed a previous sentiment that giving back to the community is important for those in business. “Enjoy your business but enjoy your community more,” he advised those at the event. Memories 2Dvd won the Small Business Award for Goulbourn. This eight year old home-based business helps clients preserve precious memories digitally for the future. Wildwood Steak and Chophouse in Stittsville received the Large Business Award (over 10 employees) for Goulbourn. This year there was only one Citizen of the Year Award given to cover the whole area of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce. It was not broken down by geography as were the other awards. This year’s Citizen of the Year Award recipient was Kathy Logsdail-Downer, executive director of Friends of Hospice Ottawa. She thanked the community for its support of Friends of Hospice Ottawa and for the many volunteers who come forward, calling it “a community which understands the value of life affirming care.”

Goulbourn Grans, one of 26 grandmother groups in the Ottawa-Gatineau region, are among 240 groups of grandmothers across Canada belonging to the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign that have been fighting fore more than two years to get Bill C-393 passed by parliament. The campaign has involved letter campaigns, visits to MP’s and appeals to the public. Members of the Goulbourn Grans were among grandmothers out in force to hear the beginning of debate on the proposed legislation back in January. They plan to pack the public galleries of Parliament when the legislation has its second hour of debate this week and again when the bill comes up for a vote on Wednesday, March 9. The Goulbourn Grans are encouraging everyone to call their MP and ask the MP to support Bill C-393. In the view of the Goulbourn Grans and the other grandmother groups supporting the legislation, the legislation will help to save millions of lives in the developing world. The legislation is meant to improve Canada’s Access to Medicines Regime (CAMR) which is legislation that was passed unanimously by Parliament over six years ago. It was to allow generic drug manufacturers to supply affordable, life-saving medicines to developing countries. However, red tape in the legislation has meant that virtually no medicine has been shipped under its provisions. Bill C-393 is meant to reduce this red tape and to allow generic drug manufacturers to ship medicines to developing countries more easily. The problem is that AIDS workers in Africa are now having to decide who gets scarce medication and who does not due to insufficient medicine being available. These are, as it were, life and death decisions that could be avoided if Bill C-393 were approved. A 2009 poll showed that 80 percent of Canadians support Bill C393 as do organizations like UNICEF Canada and Oxfam Canada. However, there is opposition in the House of Commons from Conservative MPs and some Liberal MPs. In addition, the pharmaceutical industry has lobbied against the legislation. For more information about Bill C-393 and the Goulbourn Grans stand on the matter, please contact Goulbourn Grans president Sue Lopez at 613-838-8711 or via email at suelopezblue@yahoo.com.

Dinner, activities at Richmond Legion WENDY RYAN Special to the News

Congratulations to Lorraine Gauthier who recently had a hand in cribbage that scored 29. Few players ever accomplish this in card playing. The Valentines dinner on Saturday, Feb. 19 saw about 70 tickets sold, with a delicious dinner of scalloped potatoes, ham and fresh cake served. The Rivermen played great tunes which encouraged dancing. Thanks to Mavis Lewis and all her helpers

for the great event. The next dinner at the Richmond Legion Hall will be on Saturday, March 19 to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Stew is on the menu. Pam and Doug Champagne will be entertaining. Tickets at just $15 each are available from Mavis Lewis at 613-8382749. Bursaries are available from the Richmond Legion for high school students who are going on to college or university. Silver medal, fast skating, memories for Oliver Gervais An unexpected but much appreciated silver medal. Sensational. Higher placings than predicted in his speed skating races. Wow! All achieved amid an Olympic-like atmosphere where the whole community was caught up in Games fever, complete with a memorable opening ceremony. Ah, yes. The Canada Winter Games 2011 in Halifax. It’s something that Oliver Gervais of Stittsville will remember forever. Oliver, a grade 12 student at Sacred Heart High School, was there as a member of the On-

the wide array of paraphernalia from team jackets to toques to shirts to jackets to scarves which they all received, the rousing welcome at the Halifax airport, complete with welcoming volunteers with pompoms and bells, and accommodation in a downtown hotel only minutes away from the athletes village where a cafeteria offered free breakfast, lunch and supper, with healthy snacks in between. “Anything you’d want to eat, they had,” Oliver says, while noting that the athletes village also had massage and physiotherapy clinics, a games room, a television room and even a com-

The athletes, all in their different team colours, sat in the stands as the opening ceremony proceeded, with bands playing, Prime Minister Stephen Harper speaking and the Canada Games flame being lit atop a ship’s mast. The next day, Saturday, Feb. 12, was a second training day at the speed skating venue. Oliver admits that initially it took a little getting used to skating beneath the bright television lights which were set up in the venue for broadcasting the races by TSN. See OLIVER, page 13

But this was all just leading up to the opening ceremonies on Friday, Feb. 11 which began with a Team Ontario pep rally, with the 200 or so athletes there for the first week of the two week Games wearing white jackets and sunglasses. After being pumped up by speakers, the athletes were off to the Halifax Metro Centre for the ceremony itself where each provincial team paraded in behind a flag bearer, with little Ontario flags being waved by the athletes who also had inflated noisemakers in hand. “It was really incredible walking through and all the cameras

And while he was there for what he did on the ice, his memories will be as much about the off ice happenings and particularly the opening ceremony in which he took part as about his racing. “You remember the things that happen off ice,” Oliver says in recounting his travel to Halifax and his participation in the Canada Winter Games, an event which happens every four years involving youth athletes from every province and territory. For Oliver, these off ice memories range from meeting up with other Team Ontario athletes in Toronto for the flight to Halifax,

Sports riod, an incident which left him with a bruised elbow. He still had the relay event to go and although the Ontario skaters were ranked fifth in this event, they had a flawless race and finished second to the powerful Quebec squad, thus earning a silver medal. Oliver ended up doing better than expected in all of his races. Earlier in the day on the Thursday, he had taken part in an on-air interview with CBC Radio in Ottawa. This was another new experience for him, another step in his development as an elite athlete. He also found this Canada Winter Games experience different from his normal competitions in Ontario in that skaters could see their placing and time in a race electronically as they were stepping off the ice. from his 20th place ranking for skaters age 19 and under in Canada which he had going into the race. The next day, Monday, Feb. 14, saw Oliver competing in the 500 metres in which he placed 18th. After a training day on the Tuesday, Feb. 15, he was back on the competitive ice on Wednesday, Feb. 16, placing 13th in the 1000 metre event. In his final individual race, the super 1500 metres on Thursday, Feb. 17, he skated to a 16th place finish. This was despite being involved in a wipeout of three skaters during the warmup pe-

broadcast live on TSN. A total of 354 athletes, coaches, managers and team staff represented Ontario at these Canada Winter Games. Participants for Team Ontario were from 115 different communities across the province, including Stittsville, Oliver’s home town.

From page 12 But Oliver says that the ice itself was just right for speed skating. He also enjoyed the Team Ontario speed skating coach, Ernest Overland of Kitchener, a veteran speed skating coach. He found it interesting and beneficial to be able to talk about strategy and tactics with a coach other than his regular Club coach, just to get a different perspective and outlook on the skating. Skating competition for Oliver began on Sunday, Feb. 13. He finished 16th in the 1500 metres which was an improvement

time for sightseeing. Trading pins was a big part of the experience and Oliver had a number of Team Ontario pins which he was able to trade for others. He ended up getting all of the other available pins except for the Nunavut and Prince Edward Island ones. Saturday, Feb. 19 was the beginning of the trip home, although his flight did not leave until the early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 20. There was a plane switch in Toronto and Oliver arrived back home on Sunday, Feb. 20. His parents, Olga and Alan Gervais, both travelled to the Canada Winter Games and saw Oliver compete in his races. They also enjoyed the overall hospitality exhibited throughout the Halifax community and particularly enjoyed a reception for all of the parents which was hosted by the Team Ontario staff. Oliver particularly remembers all of the little things that made the event so memorable. For instance, the day after he and his teammates won their silver medal, they received cards from the host committee in Halifax, congratulating them on their accomplishment. “They made us feel like really special,” Oliver says, adding that he was amazed by the number of athletes involved in the competition, the large scale of the event and the number of people involved in staging it. The Canada Winter Games 2011 wrapped up on Sunday, Feb. 27 with a closing ceremony

Three’s wild for Hornets SPECIAL TO THE NEWS “Three” has been running wild for the Goulbourn Hornets major bantam girls’ basketball team. Three consecutive weekends, three tournaments, three medals – two gold and one silver. And doing this despite a rash of injuries – what a performance! It all started at the Gatineau tournament on the weekend of Jan. 28 when the Hornets Three victories to get to the championship game. But unfortunately, also three injuries, reducing the squad from 11 players down to 8 players. The Hornets won both their pool games, beating St. Alex Titans 59-21 and turning back Regina Assumpta 69-29 before beating Phenix 71-22 in semi-final play. This semi-final win came with only 8 players due to injuries – an ankle injury to Julia Blais in the St. Alex Titans game and injuries to both Vanessa Burgess and Madison Graves in the Regina Assumpta match. But on to the championship final against local rival Xelles. Despite falling behind 13-5, the Hornets rally and battle to end up winning the game and the gold medal by four points. Top scorers for the Hornets in these games were Adrianna Nystedt with 10 points, Devon Kedrosky with 17 points, Aelah Thomson with 18 points and Katie Kennedy with 15 points. Four different players stepped up and showed scoring leadership when needed. That’s the sign

of a good team. The Hornets were off next to the Niagara Falls Red Raiders Annual Basketball Tournament on the weekend of Feb. 4. The Hornets won all three round robin games, beating the London 86ers 51-36 (13 points for Madison Graves), Blessed Sacrament #2 (Katie Kennedy was high scorer) and Dundas Dynamos (Chloe Brownlee was high scorer). The Hornets did not escape this round robin play with a full roster as Devon Kedrosky got the flu after the first game and was confined to her room for the rest of the weekend. In semi-final play, Madison Graves scored 11 points in leading the Hornets to a victory over the Niagara Falls team. In the gold medal game against Newman Youth, the Hornets won 57-47 to clinch the gold medal despite an ankle injury to Anyssa Close that saw her carried off the court. Madison Graves led the Hornets with 14 points while Chloe Brownlee grabbed 17 rebounds. The next weekend saw the Hornets back in tournament competition in the Mike O’Connor Tournament in Gloucester, playing in the Major Bantam AAA division. Wins against Nepean #1, Belleville and the Xelles meant that the Hornets advanced to the semi-final game where they squeaked out a 50-45 win against the Gloucester Wolverines. See HORNETS, page 19

Hornets grab medals in tournaments From page 18 This meant that the Hornets went up against the #2 team ranked team in Quebec in the championship final, namely the Tornades de Longueuil, tough competition to be sure. And remember, the Hornets were still without

three injured players. The Hornets fell behind early but had battled back to tie the game 65-65 in the fourth quarter. But the Quebec squad pulled out the victory in the end, 7265. The Hornets had just about beaten the #2 ranked

team in Quebec and did come home with the silver medals. Madison Graves received the tournament’s Hustle Award for her play. The Goulbourn Hornets major bantam girls are having quite a season with a record of 30 wins and only 3 losses so far.

Paper, paper at March Break • Warm, caring and professional staff • Relax with in-ceiling TVs in our operatories • Convenient early morning and evening appointments available

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Paper is running wild during the upcoming March Break at the Stittsville branch of the Ottawa Public Library. There will be a session on paper quilling as well as one on paper airplanes. And a third session, called Rock Some Rocks, will see the use of paper as well. Paper quilling is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped and glued together to create decorative designs. A session on paper quilling, offered by personnel from the Pinhey’s Point Historic Site, will deal with this centuriesold art of paper quilling. Ideal for those aged 6 to 12, the session will be held on Tuesday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 10:45

a.m. at the Stittsville library. Paper airplanes will take to the air at the Stittsville library on Thursday, March 17 at the end of a session running from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. In this session, youngsters aged 6 to 12 will learn how to make and fly a round paper airplane. The session will end with a competition to see which airplane will fly the farthest. The session “Rock Some Rocks” will deal with creating personal designs using paint, sparkles and, yes, paper. Imaginations will be able to run free at this session on Wednesday, March 16, running from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Registration is required for all of these March Break programs. Registration can be done online at www.biblioottawalibrary.ca under programs.

The Goulbourn Museum is going to be the place to be for youngsters during March Break this year. Indeed, the luck of the Irish is going to shine as well, as one of the special activities being held is going to have very much of an Irish theme to it as it will be happening on Thursday, March 17 which is St. Patrick’s Day itself. On Tuesday, March 15,

the Museum will be offering a March Break Keepsakes for Kids event. This will be an afternoon of crafts and activities at the Museum, running from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. On Thursday, March 17, the Museum will be holding Limericks, Leprechauns and Luck, a St. Patrick’s Day event. Wizards and dragons are the current themes at Mac’s stores with customers earning the right to play the fantasy game “Wizards & Dragons” through their purchases. Customers at the Mac’s store in Munster are reminded about this fantasy game not only with in-store publicity but also with the spectacular images of a wizard and a dragon on the store’s front window, right beside the entrance door. These images were painted on the window on Thursday, Feb. 24 by four Goulbourn Middle School students – Julia Taylor, Mackenzie Agard, Kayley Smith and Victoria Huynh – at the invitation of store management. It gave the students an opportunity not

only to display their artistic talents but to provide some unique artwork tied in with the store’s ongoing “Wizards & Dragons” fantasy game. There is no real wizardry to how someone can get to play this fantasy game. Anyone who buys something for five dollars or more at a Mac’s store such as the one in Munster receives a game card. With this game card in hand, it’s just a matter of going to the MyMacs Login/ Register page on the internet and log in via a MyMacs account. Once logged in, click on the Wizards & Dragons web ad or go to www.wizardsanddragons.ca. This will get you to the game. Typing in the game card code will result in a magical power and then you play the game. Prizes include a grand prize of $15,000, two other major cash prizes and other big prizes as well as weekly and daily prizes.

Mom-to-Mom Sale at Legion Hall

Earn Extra Money!

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Routes Available!

Are you suffering from garage sale withdrawal? Winter and garage sales just don’t mix and it is still a while before those spring garage sales start to appear. What to do – what to do? Well, the next best thing – or perhaps even something better, if that’s possible – is happening this Sunday, March 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stittsville Legion Hall on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville. It’s a Mom-to-Mom Sale being hosted by the Stittsville Co-operative Nursery School. At this event, vendor moms will have their tables set up with their items for sale arranged on them. So, it just like a garage sale, only it’s inside and kids’ stuff will be prevailing, although you never know what you might find on sale – just like at your typical garage sale. The Legion Hall is going to be packed with these tables, with moms looking to turn their children’s outgrown clothes, toys and other items into cash, all at a great bargain. There is also going to be a fun raffle

table with a variety of prizes, making this even better than your run-of-the-mill garage sale. And, as an added attraction, there will be a bake sale. Yum, yum. The Stittsville Co-operative Nursery School is holding this as a fundraising event, with all of the proceeds going to the Nursery School’s end-of-year children’s picnic. The Nursery School is making its money from the rental of tables to moms at the event. The moms, in turn, will be making their money at the event through the sale of items from their tables. They won’t want to cart the items home, so you can be assured that the moms will be wheeling and dealing at this sale, making it a great time to latch onto some great deals and even steals. Everyone is urged to attend this Momto-Mom Sale and you don’t have to be a mom to attend. Grandparents can pick up that gift or toy for that special grandchild. And who knows what else will show up on the tables – so if you like garage sales, this is the event for you – this Sunday, march 6 at the Stittsville Legion Hall.

Q

My ABS light is on, is it safe to drive?

A

The car will drive normally but braking will be the same as a vehicle without ABS, so extra caution should be taken when driving in bad weather conditions. The ABS light indicates that the computer has detected a problem and has disabled the ABS system. This can be caused by many things be it a module, sensor or even corrosion.

Did you know that dentists do much more then check for cavities? Over 90% of systemic diseases have oral manifestations and that regular dental cleanings can help prevent heart attacks, strokes, respiratory infections, low birthweight babies and helps control diabetes to name a few. The bacteria and inflammation associated with this is at the root of these conditions. Have your teeth cleaned and checked regularly. Call us today!
