Stittsville’s youth are now more connexed than ever before, thanks to The Connexion Lounge, the community’s new youth centre. It is located in the lower level at the Pretty Street Community Centre in Stittsville where it is offering not only regular drop-in activities but a special themed activity at every drop-in occasion. For youth in grades 9 to 12, this happens on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. while for those in grades 6 to 8, it is on Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Regular drop-in activities include gaming, movies, music, board games, books, air hockey, ping pong, TV, all in a cozy three room environment that includes a lounge area, a relaxing area and a quiet area, ideal for homework. Art blooms in Richmond JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Art is alive and well in Richmond. Just ask the newly formed Richmond Village Art Club. This newly formed club of Richmond artists held a two hour “Meet and Greet” at the Richmond branch of the Ottawa Public Library on Saturday, March 26,

where art was on display and a number of artists were on hand to chat about their art. There was not only a constant flow of interested visitors but also a number of artists who came forward, indicating an interest in joining the new club. Yes, the “Meet and Greet” worked as planned, highlighting the work of the artists while also attracting new members to the club. See RICHMOND , page 3

Coralie Bartley, a key organizer in all of this, has had experience in organizing tours in the village, specifically a garden tour in support of the Quiet Garden at St. John’s Anglican Church. A silk scarf creator herself, she sees an art tour as possible when there are 12 artists willing to participate. Richmond Village Art Club members are also meeting together regularly to explore new techniques and ideas in their art which encompasses several mediums such as abstract, acrylic landscape, mixed media and textile art, among others. There is some thought that the new club may approach South Carleton High School to see if there are any art class students there who might want to become involved with the club. Some of the members have participated in the Goulbourn Museum’s art show in the past and will probably continue to do so. Among the Richmond Village Art Club artists who exhibited their work at the Meet and Greet were Sue Falconer, a self-taught artist

who paints in acrylic, specializing in still-life studies in impressionist style and abstract realism; Les Bartley, who paints landscapes with acrylics, featuring a realistic, detailed style; Kat McClure, another selftaught artist who focuses on abstracts inspired by

reality; and Coralie Bartley, who specializes in painting silk scarves with dyes in various colours. For more information on the new Richmond Village Art Club, especially for artists who might want to join, please call Coralie Bartley at 613-838-5328.

From page 1 And the club, which began with a simple notice posted at the grocery store which attracted the inaugural artist members, has an active future in the planning stages. A sample of members’ work is on display at the Richmond library this month and it is hoped that this will become a permanent feature at the branch. On Sunday, May 29, Richmond Village Art Club members will be out in force, showing their work at the Artists and Authors in the Park event at Village Square in Stittsville. The North Gower branch of the Ottawa Public Library has invited the club to display art there during the months of June and July. The Richmond Village Art Club is planning a backyard art show in Richmond on the weekend of June 18/19 when a recreational vehicle group is in town, residing at the Richmond fairgrounds. And the new group may launch an art tour in Richmond, perhaps as early as this fall.

Benefit evening on Saturday, April 16 for burned-out Munster Road couple nevil.hunt@metroland.com

Steve Dunham doesn’t remember dialing 911 on the morning of March 6. “But they told me I did,” he said. Dunham can be excused for being confused. He had just been awoken by his barking dogs and discovered one wall of his Munster Road trailer on fire. He tried to smother the flames, but when a nearby mattress caught fire, he did the smart thing and got out. Dunham saved himself and his two dogs, and left the front door open for the cat, which decided to head outdoors too. His wife Anna wasn’t home at the time. Today, Steve and Anna Dunham’s trailer is just a pile of debris. The contents of their home, where they lived for 17 years, are unrecognizable. The couple lost everything and had no insurance. The cause of the fire appears to be electrical, Steve said last week. Steve is well known in Goulbourn, having worked

at the Stittsville Rona for the past 12 years. Anna is a regular in Almonte, where she’s been working at the Almonte Country Haven for about 25 years. Steve said friends and family have stepped up to help the couple over the first crazy weeks following the fire, donating clothes and sharing money for necessities. Since the fire, Steve and Anna have been staying with their daughter, Amy Ayers, in Carleton Place.

Ayers has been busy organizing a benefit evening to help Anna and Steve get back on their feet. The benefit takes place at the Almonte Legion on Saturday, April 16. Stop by and catch four bands and try for gift certificate raffles and auction items. The event runs from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets can be purchased from Ayers at 613-492-0902 for $5. She would also welcome any silent auction items to help raise funds.

From page 1 The themed activities, already planned out for April and May, include Juice It Up!, an opportunity to create your own signature drink and recipe card to take home; Board Game Showdown to determine who is the best at Monopoly, Scrabble, Snakes & ladders, Trivial Pursuit, etc.; Art Attack, an opportunity to express yourself through canvas painting and paper drawings; Hair & Wear, learning how to wear and take care of your hair; Smoothie Shop, creating your very own fruit smoothie; yoga, learning about

this age-old way to relax and be calm; Minute to Win It, just like the game show where prizes will be up for grabs for minute-long games; and Hula Hoop Battle, a competition revolving around, what else, hula hoops. If that sounds like fun, you’re dead right – it sure will be. And youth can participate in these drop-in activities for only two dollars a time. What a deal! All of this is being done through the Youth Connexion program of the city of Ottawa which has already been active in the community, especially through a

number of regular special events which it has held, some of them drawing up to 100 youth. Youth Connexion is a program designed to support and encourage young people between the ages of 12 and 18 to design and carry out community service projects, develop leadership skills and fulfill their potential. While there is staff supervision provided by the city, just like there will be at The Connexion Lounge, the goal of Youth Connexion programming is to have youth act as the middle group between their peers and the community as they implement their ideas and activities centred around recreational opportunities for youth. The Connexion Lounge at the Pretty Street Community Centre is accessed via a stairway which runs past red walls, the product of the artistry of the youth themselves. In the Lounge area itself, there is a large lounge room bounded on one side by a youth-painted green wall that automatically draws the eye. This lounge area features sofas and a ping pong table and there is even a Wii video game for entertainment. Off this main room are two smaller ones – a TV room which comfortable seating and a fridge and a quiet room meant for reading and homework. Everything in the rooms has

been donated, except the furniture covers. “It’s a work in progress,” Lisa White, Youth Connexion director for Stittsville and Richmond, said about The Connexion Lounge at the Friday, March 25 open house for it where the public and parents had the opportunity to tour the facility and see what this new youth centre for Stittsville’s youth has to offer. Indeed, all those at the open house even had an opportunity to help raise some funds for Youth Connexion programming through taking part in a bean guessing contest and in trying their hand at a ping pong ball game of X’s and O’s. The Connexion Lounge is now where the Youth Connexion team will be holding its meetings. Indeed, the hope is that The Connexion Lounge and its activities will prove so popular and worthwhile that its success may lead to Stittsville’s youth eventually getting a place of their own for their programs and activities. The Connexion Lounge programs and activities will be publicized through the schools and via “Stittsville Youth Connexion” on Facebook. For more information about The Connexion Lounge or Youth Connexion programming and activities, please contact youthconnexion@ottawa.ca or call 613580-2424, ext. 43307.

TD Canada Trust in Stittsville is rallying behind the upcoming seventh annual Hike for Hospice Palliative Care. It is a way that not only the Stittsville branch but all TD Canada Trust branches in the Ottawa area are giving back to the community and helping the Hike reach its $50,000 fundraising goal but also there is a special reason why TD Canada Trust and especially the Stittsville branch want to be involved. This reason comes in the person of Julia Hill, who was the inaugural TD Canada Trust branch manager in Stittsville, is a longtime TD Canada Trust staff member who most recently has been working in human resources at head office, and is now battling cancer. In her spirited fight against cancer, Julia has embodied everything that is associated with hospice palliative care – courage, perseverance, love, caring and a positive attitude. Friends of Hospice Ottawa, a registered charity, assists those battling a life threatening illness with its day hospices, home visits, transportation, caregiver support and client advocacy. Julia Hill, who has dealt with Friends of Hospice Ottawa as a bank manager, knows the difference that the organization can make in the life of a family with a member facing a life threatening illness. That is why, when Friends of Hospice Ottawa asked her if she would be the honourary chair for this year’s Hike for Hospice Palliative Care, there was no hesitation. It was a resounding “yes.” She is thrilled to be doing it, knowing as she does that hospice palliative care can touch everyone at some point in time. And so, on Sunday, May 1 at noon at Andrew Haydon Park in Nepean, Julia Hill will be there leading the hike. And right there with her, among the participants in the Hike for Hospice, will be many of her friends and co-workers from TD Canada Trust branches across

Ottawa. “It will be a sea of green, guaranteed,” says Stittsville TD Canada Trust branch manager Maria Harrington. “We’re going to make it an event,” she adds. All of the TD Canada Trust branches in the city are also going to do some fundraising to help the Hike reach its goal this year, all as a way of showing their support and friendship for Julia Hill. “Her illness has opened so many eyes in our banking community,” says Maria Harrington about the impact that the illness affecting the much-loved Julia Hill has had on TD Canada Trust personnel across the city. And the Stittsville TD Canada Trust branch is even more involved that just providing Hike day support. It is undertaking a fundraising initiative to help raise funds for the Hike for Hospice. Already the bank has one gift basket from Robin’s Nails valued at $250. Manager Harrington is hoping to be able to get additional donations from other Stittsville businesses, all of which will be added to the raffle table set up now at the branch. Any customers or others dropping into the branch at the corner of Carp Road and Stittsville Main Street will be able to purchase a raffle ticket for $2 or three tickets for $5. This will entitle the ticket holder to a chance at winning one of these donated items. And, more importantly, all of the proceeds will be going to the Hike for Hospice. It is going to be a real community fundraising event – businesses donating the prizes and community residents purchasing the raffle tickets – a real example of a community pitching in and giving back to a worthy, worthy cause. Anyone who wishes can also be a sponsor or even a participant in the Hike for Hospice. Pledge forms are available at the Stittsville TD Canada Trust branch. There are also corporate sponsorship opportunities available for businesses which might like to get involved to a greater degree. For instance, a business

Spring - won’t it be great! Won’t it be great to have spring arrive in full force? We have been teased a little bit since the first of March but spring really has not yet come full force into Goulbourn life. Hopefully that will happen in the coming week and weeks – and that’s no April Fool’s joke. Won’t it be great to get out in the garden and in the yard, doing the spring cleanup and preparing for the flowers and vegetables and green grass of the coming months? Won’t it be great to leave the house without rubbers and heavy winter coats? Won’t it be great to drive on roads that are not glazed over with ice or covered with snow, adding to the stress of driving? Won’t it be great to see and

hear the birds chirping in the morning? Won’t it be great to go to events, not in an arena or hall but outdoors, at Village Square in Stittsville or at the ball diamonds and soccer fields of Goulbourn? Won’t it be great to enjoy that spring freshness in the air and those first flashes of warm spring sunshine? Won’t it be great to be able to stop and chat with a passing friend, either over the back fence or while sweeping the front walk or while putting a shopping bag in the car? Won’t it be great to put away the toque and don the ball cap or wide-brimmed gardening hat? Won’t it be great to enjoy the pitter patter of April’s raindrops on the roof, rather than hear the

swirl of winter’s frosty winds blowing around the corner of the house? Won’t it be great to look forward to the bonnets of Easter and the spring daffodils, replacing the mittens of winter and the poinsettias of Christmas? Won’t it be great to pump up the winter-deflated bicycle tires and go for a ride down the street? Won’t it be great to look up at the sun and feel the warmth of its rays on your face? Won’t it be great to open up the house windows to spring air? Won’t it be great just to be alive and able to enjoy the coming once again of spring with all its freshness and renewal? Aw, spring – what a great time of year!

Politics boring? Not here in our nation’s capital Where Ottawans always stand out is when the pollster asks if they would like an election, if one hasn’t been called, or if they are interested in the election, if one has. This is like asking people at a hockey game if they are interested in the hockey game. People elsewhere might profess a lack of interest, but politics is Ottawa’s major sport. Hockey might sometimes be considered a rival, but certainly not this year. Why would you not want another game? While people in less enlightened parts of the country bemoan politicking, condemn partisanship and generally dismiss the political struggles as ritual, we who live in the shadow of the Peace Tower have quite a different view. Politics gives shape to our community, meaning to our lives. Politics affects our friendships. We all know people who work in politics — as politicians, as strategists, as volunteers, as political reports — and

CHARLES GORDON we know that they are real people too. Even the reporters. They go to the church or the pub, they belong to the book club, they have kids who playhockey, they mow their lawns and shovel their snow. So even if we don’t vote the way they do, we can suffer along with them, or take some pleasure from their triumphs. To us, politics is not some exotic activity that other people do, like polo or wine-tasting. It is central to our life. And central to our jobs as well. We don’t have to work in the party backrooms for political events to shape our lives. The public service changes significantly after elections. The change is not so great as in the U.S., where more top jobs are filled in and after elections. But top jobs do change here and the occupants

make their appointments and before you know it, you’ve got a new position, maybe a better one, maybe not. And your neighbour, who works for a company that supplies widgets to a government department, is all of a sudden selling less widgets or more, depending on the political decisions somebody made somewhere up the line. The neighbour on the other side, who works for an NGO, is delighted or depressed by something the new folks have done. Even if jobs don’t change, priorities do. More will be spent, or less. The environment is a priority, or not. Foreign aid goes up, or doesn’t. With every decision, somebody’s job description changes. You know that, and even if you haven’t experienced it yourself, you’ve heard the muttering from your relatives, or the people next door. The government doesn’t have to change for any of this to hap-

pen. Ministers change and new ministers have new ideas, or no ideas at all. Even if a government wins re-election, it learns things from the campaign. Uh-oh, the government discovers, the people want more of this and less of that. Better make it happen. In the attempt to make it happen, the woman around the corner suddenly becomes more important at work. Or the family suddenly has to sell the second car. All of this means that politics is a spectator sport all year round in our town. People have to keep an eye on what’s going on. Even the most routine exchange of rants in Question Period is go-

ing to affect someone. But it’s at election time that the game really heats up. The election is March Madness, the Stanley Cup playoffs, the World Series. (If the analogy holds, this would make make Budget Day the equivalent of the All-Star Game, except that people actually get hurt on Budget Day.) There is real excitement. People are biting their fingernails. Sometimes they would bite other people, if the law allowed it. We should never let anyone tell us that it’s not interesting. It is more than interesting. It is life or death, if life and death can be fun.

Stittsville News - MARCH 31, 2011

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The arrival of spring puts a boost in a person’s step, a lilt in their voice and, more than anything, a song in their heart. And so what better way to celebrate spring than with a vocal musical concert. This is exactly what is going to happen, not once but twice, with both concerts featuring the Goulbourn Male Chorus which will be delivering its first-ever spring concerts following on the footsteps, or should we say vocal stylings, of its popular and successful inaugural Christmas concert last December. The first concert will be held in Stittsville on Sunday, April 10 at 3 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church with tickets available at the door for $12 each. Those aged 16 and under will be admitted free. In this concert, the Goulbourn Male Chorus, under the direction of Robert Dueck with accompanist Barb Creech, will be joined by the West Ottawa Children’s Chorus, directed by Gloria Jean Nagy.

The second concert will be presented in Richmond on Sunday, May 1 at 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church on McBean Street, with tickets available at the door for $10 each and again with free admission for those aged 16 and under. For this Richmond concert, the Goulbourn Male Chorus will have as their guest artists members of the St. Paul’s United Church choir under the direction of David George. In these concerts, both entitled “Sing Me A Song,” the 14 member Goulbourn Male Chorus will be presenting music of several genres including Irish, English, Scottish and German folk songs, sea shanties, ballads, vocal solos and gospel songs as well as some lighter selections that are just sheer fun. There will be two familiar folk song selections included on the program, hopefully to encourage audience singalongs. There are also promises of whistles blowing, cutlasses clashing and the call of lookouts from crows’ nests high above the deck. You won’t want to miss it.

Over $4,000 from Rotary trivia night SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

It may have been a trivia night but there was nothing trivial about it. It was the sixth annual trivia night held by the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville at the Lions Hall in Stittsville on Friday, Feb. 25. There were 160 participants in all, working in teams to respond to the 100 trivia questions and having fun while doing it. The evening ended up raising over $3,700 and when a donation from the Stittsville District Lions Club is added in, it means that the Rotary Club is able to

make a donation of over $4,000 to the Dave Smith Youth Drug Treatment Centre, the recipient of the trivia night proceeds this year. The Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville has made support of the Dave Smith Youth Drug Treatment Centre one of its primary projects and has made a commitment of donating $30,000 to the Drug Treatment Centre over the next ten or less years. The continued support of the community for Rotary Club of Ottawa - Stittsville fundraising initiatives like this recent trivia night will ensure that this commitment is fulfilled.

E-waste drop off coming - and it’s FREE JOHN CURRY

john.curry@metroland.com

Just purchased a new computer or printer and wondering what to do with the old one that is just taking up space now? Well, your prayers have been answered. There’s going to be a free, yes FREE, e-waste drop off day right here in Stittsville, all thanks to Capital Junk, a full service junk removal company serving the City of Ottawa Councillor Reports By Shad Qadri, Councillor Ward Six Stittsville City of Ottawa

Ottawa area. It is all happening on Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the parking lot of the Stittsville Home Furniture store at 1609 Stittsville Main Street, right across from the Stittsville post office. There will be a Capital Junk truck parked there for the two hours, all ready to accept old e-waste items, up to three per household or business. Items accepted will include monitors,

towers, keyboards, printers, fax machines and stereos. And, once again, it is all free of charge. Once the drop off is over, Capital Junk will transport all of the items collected to local recycling facilities to ensure proper disposal. This fits in with Capital Junk’s philosophy of supporting the environment and making every effort to recycle and/ or donate the items that it picks up on a daily basis.

Capital Junk held its first such e-waste drop off day in Stittsville last year and was overwhelmed with items. It is hoping for an equally great turnout again this year. Capital Junk Services focuses on eco friendly removal in its everyday work which includes hauling away almost any unwanted item including appliances, furniture, electronics, computers, yard waste and renovation debris from both

residential and commercial customers. Old appliances, electronics, computers, soil and even used tires are recycled in the most eco friendly manner possible. Used furniture, books, clothing, toys and other household items are donated to local charities across the city. Materials such as bricks, lumber, old doors and counter tops are delivered to organizations like Habitat for Humanity for their re-use. Capital Junk can be contacted at 613-825-0707 or via the internet at www.CapitalJunk.ca.

Come Celebrate

I encourage you to come and join the Goulbourn Historical Society on April 16, 1:30pm, at the Stittsville Legion, for: “April Foolishness” with well known local author, radio personality and wonderful speaker, Mary Cook. As usual, attendance, parking and refreshments are free. The Legion is wheel chair accessible if you enter to the left of the front door (facing Main St.). There is a sloped driveway leading to a ramp for easy entry. New Park Plan I will be presenting to the community a redesigned Bryanston Gate Park Plan at a public meeting April 11th. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 – 9:00 pm at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex located at 1500 Shea Road.

at URL http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/planning/ community_plans/completed/fernbank/index_ en.html . The developers have started to develop the subdivision plans for this area and they are available to view on my website www.shadqadri.com under the Planning and Development header. There are three plans at this point and all have Fernbank addresses, there are two under the residential and one under the commercial developments buttons. There are numerous builders and their timelines are all different. They will develop their plans and will start construction based on their own business plans and market surveys.

This meeting is scheduled to seek further public comments on the park plan that has been prepared over the last year. This plan did include initial input from the community and includes significant up-grading to the current park and the inclusion of the new area.

The relocation of the Skate Park.... With the start of construction for the addition of a new ice surface at Goulbourn Recreation Complex, we have had to remove the existing skate park. Working with staff we are still investigating new locations for the construction of a skate park.

We expect the work to be completed this summer with some restrictions on use of the new playing fields so the turf can grow.

The interest from the young people of the skating community has been very high and as soon as a suitable location can be found and prepared we will be relocating the park.

Fernbank Community Design Plan Over the last couple of weeks I have been asked about the tree removal on the lands south of the Goulbourn Recreation Complex and east of Liard Street. This area is included in the Fernbank Lands , these are the lands that were added to the urban boundary of Ottawa by a decision of the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) .In August 2005, the Ontario Municipal Board allowed appeals by Del, Brookfield and West Park Estates to designate their lands between Stittsville and Kanata as urban in the 1997 Regional Official Plan. In Order 2092, the Board requested that a modification to the 1997 Plan be prepared to guide future development of the area according to policies similar to those in the 2003 Official Plan regarding community design plans. Recognizing that the designation of the area was also appealed in the 2003 Official Plan, Council subsequently settled the 2003 Plan appeals by supporting a ‘Future Urban Area’ designation for the area and setting additional requirements for the community design plan.

One of the major difficulties in relocating the skate park is finding an area large enough for the park near a supervised venue, there are only two such locations in Stittsville and we are still in discussions with Parks and Recreation staff about these locations. Stay tuned tlepack@theemc.ca

There were numerous public meetings the last of which was held on April 27, 2009 where all of the development details were placed before the community. These plans included the proposed Community Design Plan, Master Servicing Study, Environmental Management Plan, Transportation Master Plan and Official Plan Amendment. I as a private citizen was a participant in the entire process and supported the City’s position when they opposed the expansion before the OMB. When I was elected as the Councillor I was supportive of the communities concerns and encouraged their participation in the Community Design Plan process that resulted in the plans approved by Council in 2009. What you are seeing today is the end result of the OMB decision and the resulting community work that will lead to the development of the new community of Fernbank. The Fernbank Community Design Plan is the master plan for this new neighbourhood. The plan is on the City website

HEARING SOLUTIONS CLINIC

CLINIQUE DE SOLUTIONS AUDITIVES 10 YEARS OF HEARING SOLUTIONS! Communication is priceless. With it, we connect with our world on a daily basis. Unfortunately, even the slightest hearing loss can be a significant obstacle resulting in social isolation. Interactions are hindered as speech becomes difficult to understand, loved ones become mumblers, punch lines are missed and repeating becomes a nuisance. Untreated hearing loss can also lead to diminished cognitive abilities. Indeed, untreated hearing loss has a great impact on one’s quality of life. Selecting the right hearing healthcare provider is crucial.

This personalized hearing healthcare approach differs from the larger hearing clinics and hearing chains. Unfortunately, patients there may be shuffled between staff, rushed through consultations and offered a limited choice of hearing aid models. At Hearing Solutions Clinic, the same Audiologist always takes her time to really listen to and understand your concerns. This is followed by the luxury of being able to choose from an unlimited range of the most up-to-date products thereby guaranteeing a hearing solution that is unique to you, your lifestyle and your hearing needs. “It would not be in my patient’s best interest for the clinic to carry only one line of products or even just a few favored manufacturers. It is important to consider all the options across all of the manufacturers because products vary greatly -from a variety of noise reduction systems to different remote options, from rechargeable hearing aids to open ear products and Bluetooth capabilities.’’ explains Rosanne, ‘’Furthermore, hearing aids may not always be the best or only solution. We therefore also carry a wide variety of assistive listening devices.’’ By remaining independent, private, as well as locally owned and operated, Hearing Solutions Clinic has no manufacturer limitations

Left to right are Doctors of Audiology Rosanne McNamee & Maria Perez and very competitive prices. Despite Hearing Solutions Clinic’s ongoing growth, Rosanne protects the special quality of her clinic by hiring professionals that honor her traditional caring views. The Hearing Solutions Clinic team currently consists of two Doctors of Audiology, Rosanne as well as Maria Perez. Both are very diligent at keeping Hearing Solutions Clinic up to date in technology and practice. Consequently, you receive the service of professionals who are not only top in their field, but who pride themselves on offering quality products and the highest standard of care. Dorothy Johnson, the receptionist, completes the team. Her forte is her accommodating and pleasant manner. Like Rosanne and Maria, Dorothy always has your best interest at heart. Together, the members of this team enable Hearing Solutions Clinic to be more efficient than ever without straying from the core values, beliefs and principles that created Hearing Solutions Clinic a decade ago. For unparalleled personalized hearing healthcare, book your consultation with one of our Doctors of Audiology at Hearing Solutions Clinic, conveniently located at 1915 Baseline Rd, suite 202 (across from Home Depot) where parking is free! You are also welcome to come meet our team during one of our upcoming hearing aid demonstration days which will be held Wednesday, April 13th as well as Thursday, April 14th. Either way, you are sure to be impressed.

Rosanne McNamee, Doctor of Audiology, Registered Audiologist, is the owner of Hearing Solutions Clinic. After a year away for a maternity leave, Rosanne is back to celebrate the 10th year of her practice! This 10 year success undoubtedly stems from the fact that Hearing Solutions Clinic offers a kind of hearing healthcare that is lacking elsewhere in Ottawa. At Hearing Solutions Clinic you won’t hear an office jingle, find crowded waiting rooms, be lured by marketing schemes or feel the pressure of sales tactics. Instead, you will find a clinic with old fashion roots where hearing healthcare is the priority, not hearing aid sales. It is large enough to offer amazing service yet small enough to allow for more personal professional relationships. With such a strong focus on patient care, Rosanne strives to offer every patient nothing but the best. ‘’I believe in treating others the way I would want to be treated, so I care for my patients as I would family. I give everyone 100 percent of myself as we work together to reach their hearing goals.’’ explains Rosanne.

Another award for Andrea JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

It was the annual “Night of the Mounties” when Mount Allison University honoured its athletes. And for one Mountie athlete, it was the occasion for receipt of yet another major award – her third this month. What a way to end a Mountie athletic career! Yes, Andrea Switalski of Stittsville has now won a major award at three levels – a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) award, an Atlantic University Sport award and now, most recently, a Mount Allison University award. At the “Night of the Mounties” on Thursday, March 24, Andrea received the Gigi Hicks women’s sportsmanship award, one of the ten major awards presented at the event. The award is named after Gigi Hicks, a 1981 Mount Allison graduate and athlete who passed away with an aneurysm while running on the street. She was known for her attitude and enthusiasm which the award commemorates. Andrea, who completed her career with the Mount Allison women’s hockey team this season, has been a real leader for the team, both on and off the ice, for her four years with the team. This season she was an assistant captain as the team made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Last season she received the team’s

Andrea Switalski of Stittsville holds the Gigi Hicks Award honouring Mount Allison University’s varsity sports female athlete of the year who exemplifies hard work, team spirit, improvement and inspiration.

Joey’s Pizza/Jack Drover Leadership Award in recognition of her leadership qualities. Jack Drover is the former longtime coach of the Mount Allison Mounties women’s hockey team. Andrea was the team’s rookie of the year back in 2008. A graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Stittsville, Andrea is on the Dean’s List academically. She will be graduating this spring in honours geography with a minor in religious studies. In the classroom, she has a current grade point average of 3.7. This Mount Allison women’s sportsmanship award covering all varsity sports at Mount Allison comes on the heels of Andrea receiving the Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s Marion Hilliard Award which is a national award given annually to a CIS women’s hockey player who has best exhibited outstanding balance between athletic achievement, academics and community service. She was the first Mount Allison player to receive such a major CIS award in women’s hockey. This CIS award happened after she received the 2011 Atlantic University Sport Student/Athlete/Community Service Award. This made her a candidate for the Marion Hilliard Award. On the ice, Andrea, a 5 foot, 2 inch rearguard, was a key performer on the Mounties defensive unit this past season. The Mounties finished third in the Atlantic conference for least goals allowed. She is considered an excellent skater and a player who contributes both defensively and offensively in games. This season she scored two goals and added five assists in 24 games. Chili, leprechauns at St. Paul’s SPECIAL TO THE NEWS How can you follow a fun filled and mouth watering “Chili Cookoff ”? What about with an equally fun filled dinner with leprechauns followed by an Irish-tinged auction of items and talents? That’s what has happened at St. Paul’s United Church in Richmond. In February, the Silver Ladle Trophy was up for grabs at a “Chili Cookoff ” that was not only a Photo courtesy of Isabel Thompson mouth watering experience for everyone but was First place winners and recipients of the Silver Ladle Trophy for the fun filled. Indeed, the tasting and subsequent votbest chili at the recent “Chili Cookoff” held at St. Paul’s United Church ing on the offerings of the 12 participating groups in Richmond are “The Men in Black,” from left to right, Dave Thomas, proved most enjoyable, not only for the chili but also for the little bit of bribery which some feel Don McCurdy, Jim Wagdin, Rick Todd and Allister Sehl. may have had some influence on the final result.

MEET JOE SMITH. He used a $100,000.00 gift from his mother to build a beautiful new home. Then his wife left him. He has just learned that he will lose this gift because of Ontario’s special treatment of the “matrimonial home”. Had Joe Smith sought legal advice before he blundered, he could have taken steps to protect his interests.

When it was all said and done, “The Men in Black,” comprised of Dave Thomas, Don McCurdy, Rick Todd, Allister Sehl and Jim Wagdin, won the Silver Ladle Trophy for the best chili. Second place went to the team of Judy Wagdin and Bert Weiss while third place was taken by the team of Nancy Samson-Booth, Linda Moore, Brenda Lawton and Brenda Thomas. All of the participating groups now have a year to go back to the drawing board, modify their recipes as well as their marketing (bribery?) skills, and come back for next year’s event ready to compete again for the silver Ladle Trophy. Proceeds from this year’s event went to the Sunday School for Camp Awesome, the Canada Food Grains Bank and Jessica McCoy, the young local girl who is battling leukemia. It was hard to beat the excitement and entertainment and just plain good food of this “Chili Cookoff ” but when in trouble, turn to the Irish. On Saturday, March 12, the third annual St. Patrick’s Day dinner and auction was held at the St. Paul’s United Church hall and it matched the “Chili Cookoff ” in terms of fun and good food. About 100 little green “leprechauns” enjoyed a delicious Irish stew dinner with all the trimmings. But it did not end there. After the dinner, there’s were lots of laughs and fun when that notorious Irishman James O’Wagdin enthusiastically officiated over an auction of items and talents.

Styrofoam use at Carp River bridge SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Styrofoam is playing an important role in the construction of the new bridge over the Carp River on the expanded Hazeldean Road. No, the bridge itself is not being built of styrofoam but it is going to be depending on styrofoam for its stability and solid footing. This is all because the soil at the bridge crossing is such that it will not bear the weight of a total granular backfill. This is because leda clay, which is the soil at the bridge, is a difficult base material that

has a low load bearing capacity. This capacity is even lower when the soil is wet. As a result, an engineering technique in which styrofoam is used to improve the load bearing capacity of the soil is being employed. Over 4,000 blocks of styrofoam, each four feet by eight feet in size, will be used in various thicknesses as backfill for the bridge. This is much lighter than the traditional granular backfill and is something that the soil conditions can withstand. In association with this bridge project, the Missis-

sippi Valley Conservation Authority has recently had the Carp River just south of this new bridge dredged at a cost of just over $10,000. This will facilitate flow under the bridge. This bridge over the Carp River is the last major piece to be finished for the reconstruction of the Hazeldean Road from Terry Fox Drive in Kanata west to the Carp Road in Stittsville. The $65 million project, which has seen Hazeldean Road expanded to four lanes, has been done under the economic stimulus program of the federal government.

Styrofoam is used instead of granular material for the approaches to the new Hazeldean Road bridge over the Carp River. Granular material would put too much weight stress on the underlying soil, necessitating the use of styrofoam instead.

Getting high on history. That’s the experience of Linda Preston of Richmond who, along with her sister Cheryl McCoy, has now written two “Voices from Goulbourn’s Past” books filled with the stories of longtime residents of Goulbourn as told by the people themselves. “You’ve no idea the high I get from all this,” Ms. Preston, a retired school teacher and lifelong Goulbourn resident, told members of the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville at its March 22 meeting. She admitted that she is passionate and gets excited about the whole subject of family histories and photos, noting her own extensive Goulbourn ancestry, with ties to the Morton/Conley families as well as to the Hobbs/Vaughan families. “I’m related to probably a large portion of the people in the township,” she said, noting that she had a total of 34 aunts and uncles with many, many cousins as a result. But it is the stories that she heard from members of this large extended family while growing up that really turned her

Ms. Preston says that both she and her sister gain great satisfaction from doing these interviews and publishing them in book form in “Voices from Goulbourn’s Past,” trying to capture a bit of the flavour and history of the community in which they both grew up and where they now live. Copies of “Voices from Goulbourn’s Past,” both volumes, are available for purchase at King’s valu-mart at the Richmond Plaza in Richmond, at the Goulbourn Museum at Stanley’s Corners and from Ms. Preston herself at 613-838-3115.

on to the history of the area. “These books are all about stories,” she said about “Voices from Goulbourn’s Past,” remembering how the stories would flow in after-supper gatherings. She and her sister Cheryl remember these stories and both feel that the stories of the pioneer families of Goulbourn need to be preserved. That is what they are trying to do through these books which Ms. Preston admits have proven far more popular than she and her sister ever expected. People are really interested in these stories of their ancestors, she said. She told of the entrepreneurial success of the Morton/Conley sawmill at Stapleton in Goulbourn west of Richmond, noting that what started as a sawmill grew into a year-round enterprise involving threshing and raising turkeys, allowing the family to become quite prosperous. The stories in her books are all based on interviews taped over several sessions and then transcribed and edited. There is then a search for appropriate photographs to go with the story. Ms. Preston says that one of her greatest pleasures in this whole process is sitting with family members and looking through their treasured photographs.

Going into what became known as the Battle of Britain, Prime Minister Winston Churchill spoke his then-inspiring and now-famous words “…we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.” And going into what could be called the Battle of Carp Mountain – Chapter Three, a coalition of citizen groups opposed to any new landfill at Waste Management’s Carp Road site made it clear at an information and quasi workshop session on Monday, March 28 at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex (GRC) in Stittsville that the fight has just begun, that the coalition will be defending the community against this landfill proposal, that the fight will be waged on the battlegrounds of site and location, need and capacity requirement, odour and air quality, groundwater and surface water, traffic and transportation, ecosystems and social/economic considerations, and that the fight will take the form of continual input to the Waste Management Environmental Assessment (EA) process and to municipal and provincial politicians. Just like with Churchill, there is no thought of surrender here. Olivia Nixon, one of the coalition spokespeople at the meeting, criticized the ongoing Waste Management EA process of open houses as not pro-

viding required information to the community. She also made it clear that the whole process was only in its early stages and contrary to any rumours, the new landfill is “not a done deal.” “Don’t let anyone tell you it’s a done deal because it’s not,” she declared. She noted that in both 2006 and 2007, the community had fought and defeated Waste Management proposals for landfill expansions at the site, stating that this can be achieved again if there is enough community opposition to the current proposal. Ms. Nixon cited off-site water contamination, odour problems and land use conflict situations as among the reasons why having a new landfill at the Carp Road site is a bad idea. “Carp Road is simply not an acceptable location for landfill,” she told the 110 people who filled the meeting hall at the GRC. Among those at the meeting were city of Ottawa councillors Shad Qadri of Stittsville, Eli El-Chantiry of West Carleton/March and Marianne Wilkinson of Kanata North. Ms. Nixon noted that back in 2006, the community was told that there would be a crisis if new landfill capacity was not approved. Now, five years later, there is no such crisis, she proclaimed, providing a graph that showed that even with the current status quo with no new diversion initiatives, landfill capacity available to the city of Ottawa will handle the need up to the year 2023. “It’s not Ottawa that has a crisis,” she said. “It’s Waste Management that has a crisis.” She expressed concern about the

proposed 6.5 million cubic metre lifetime capacity of the proposed new landfill at the Carp Road site and particularly that the proposed service area for it is all of Ontario including Toronto. “It’s very clear that Waste Management wants this capacity to service all of Ontario,” she said, adding that what Waste Management is seeking in this current proposal is the new landfill and all of the other parts of the proposal like diversion and recycling are just window dressing to try to make the landfill more acceptable. She lamented that the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE), in approving the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the Waste Management proposal last November, completely disregarded the community’s input regarding new waste handling technologies and kept the EA to a restricted focus, centred on a new landfill operation at the site. She urged the community to keep pushing back, asking questions in the EA process and writing letters to the MOE. In this, she received support from Carp Road resident Peter Kondruss who, in a question about possible long term effects of methane gas from a landfill on human health, got into the long history of landfill at the site and how it is the MOE that will be making the final decision and should be the focus of public pressure. He pulled out the old adage that it is the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. See COALITION, page 22

21 Stittsville News - MARCH 31, 2011

Justin Collins inspired others Justin Collins of Stittsville, who showed through his example how to overcome adversity by becoming involved and being a leader, has died. The 18 year old passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends, on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. He showed not only tremendous courage in battling cancer but also was an inspiration to others in how he fought the fight, continuing to love life, love hockey and work to ensure that a cure will be found to beat cancer. For the last two years, Team Collins participated in Stittsville’s Relay For Life, raising funds to help in the battle against cancer by supporting cancer research. His actions in forming a Relay team with his friends and becoming involved in the community’s fight against cancer, making it more than just a personal battle, made Justin a role model for others, both young and old. Justin proved to be an inspiration to both his teammates and his coaches on the Stittsville Angry Pirates midget B non-checking hockey team two seasons ago, leading them as an assistant captain to the league championship. He and his friend Peter Treboutat had conceived the idea of having a hockey team that season while participating in the Relay For Life event the previous June. While the team won the league championship, that was not what made the

season so memorable. What made the season such a special one for the players and coaches was the inspiration and support which they received from fellow player Justin. Throughout the season, he continued to battle his rare form of cancer with numerous surgeries and treatments. He had a surgery before the season began and two lung surgeries during the season. But despite this, he was there for his teammates throughout the season, either on the ice or off. After one of the surgeries, he was back on the ice playing just weeks later. He was named an assistant captain of the team because he was always playing a leadership role, either on the ice or, when he was not able to play, in the dressing room and in the stands, urging the team on. He returned to the team and hockey just as soon as his doctors gave him the “all clear” after a surgery or treatment. He did all this while also doing his grade 12 studies. Justin is survived by his mother Christina Lalonde, his father Kenny Collins and his brother John as well as grandparents, nephews and nieces, cousins and friends. A Mass in Memory of Justin was held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Stittsville on Friday, March 25. Interment took place in River Bank Cemetery at Port Greville, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia on Tuesday, March 29. In memoriam donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.

Waste Management of Canada Corporation (WM) are undertaking an Environmental Assessment (EA) seeking approval for a new landfill footprint at the existing Ottawa Waste Management Facility (Ottawa WMF). The new landfill footprint will be one component of the proposed West Carleton Environmental Centre (WCEC). The proposed WCEC will be an integrated waste management facility that will include: • A new landfill footprint for disposal of residual waste materials; • Waste diversion and recycling operations; • Composting Operations; • Renewable energy facilities; and, • Recreational lands for community uses. The new landfill footprint is the only component of the WCEC that requires EA approval under the Environmental Assessment Act (EAA). The proposed location of the WCEC and the new landfill footprint component is within the City of Ottawa in the area shown on the map below. The purpose of the EA is to study the potential environmental effects (positive or negative) of the proposed new landfill footprint. Key components of an EA include consultation with government agencies and the public; consideration and evaluation of alternatives; and, the management of potential environmental effects. Conducting an EA promotes good environmental planning before decisions are made about a proposal. Consultation WM recently held a series of Public Open House events as well as a Workshop to discuss the EA for the proposed landfill footprint and other ancillary facilities to be located at the WCEC. As part of the next phase of the EA, WM is hosting a series of Open Houses scheduled for the week of March 29th - 31st, 2011. An additional Open House has now been added. The specific date, time and location of this additional Open House is as follows: Thursday April 7, 2011 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Stittsville Legion 1481 Stittsville Main Street, Stittsville The WCEC Open House #2 sessions will provide an opportunity for attendees to speak directly with WM and the consulting team on the alternative methods of proceeding with the new landfill and ancillary facilities. This will also provide an opportunity to further refine the criteria, indicators and measures proposed as part of the evaluation process. Information on current studies (baseline studies), the approval process and future planned consultation activities will also be provided. Your input at this Open House will be reviewed and incorporated by WM and the Project Team in the development of a Recommended Alternative for the new landfill footprint at the WCEC. In addition to attending the public open house and workshop events, you are invited to submit your comments via the project website (http://wcec.wm.com), mail, email or fax to the address/number published below. We will also receive your comments on our project information line at (613) 836-8610.

From page 20 “You really have to pile a lot of grease on this,” he said. One way that the coalition will be doing this is by submitting its own version of an EA study on the proposal, giving what it views as the community’s outlook on the matter. Harold Moore, another coalition spokesperson at the meeting, noted that the approved EA process requires Waste Management to determine existing conditions at the site through base line studies which should then be presented to the community. This has not yet happened, even though Waste Management is moving on in its EA process, he stated. “So, right away, they have gone off the script,” he said. These existing conditions include site/location, need/capacity requirement, odour/air quality, groundwater/surface water, traffic/transportation, ecosystem (land/water) and social/economic factors. Just how much divergence there can be about the scope of the study of existing conditions became apparent when Mr. Moore talked about the extent of the study area for the site/ location category of existing conditions. He suggested that the study area should extend to at least ten kilometers around the site whereas he mused that Waste Management will probably be proposing a 500 metre study area which is the provincial minimum standard for such a study. “Your certainly have the right to say that that’s ridiculous,” he told those at the meeting in reference to the smaller 500 metre study area distance. Also seen as ridiculous, at least by Vincent Lavoie, another coalition organizer, is the Waste Management request for a 6.5 million cubic metre capacity for the new landfill. He said that Waste Management has given no reasons for this capacity figure. “They have not justified it. They have not explained it,” he said, adding that such a giant landfill makes no sense in his opinion and it is another thing that everyone should comment on as ridiculous. Mr. Moore noted that in 2007, there were over 5,000 complaints filed about odours from the existing landfill site. He said that the existing landfill does not smell bad now because it is basically

a closed site, having reached its capacity and in the process of being capped. “It doesn’t smell now because it is closed,” Ms. Nixon said, but predicted that any new landfill will smell – it will just be a matter of time. The coalition has concerns about the size of the odour study area for existing conditions and its concerns extend into all of the other categories of study for existing conditions such as the condition of the underlying bedrock of the site and the existing condition of all of the wells in the immediate area of the site. One of these concerns is about the traffic that will be generated by any new landfill, estimated by the coalition to be 82,000 truck trips per year or 320 truck trips per day, equaling one truck trip every 1.3 minutes in an eight hour day. Mr. Moore said that an extensive traffic study is required, not only for the Carp Road but for the Richardson Sideroad and the off ramps of highway 417. Mr. Moore urged those at the meeting and others in the community to get informed about the Waste Management landfill proposal and be heard about the issue. He said that everything said to Waste Management in the EA process becomes a part of the official record. He urged people to attend the Waste Management open house meetings because if people boycott them, then Waste Management will be writing its EA study report without reference to community input and concerns. He urged people to talk to their neighbours about the issue, noting that in both previous landfill proposals, the community was in an uproar because of the odours from the site. He feels that this current EA process about a new landfill at the site will once again result in a community uproar. Mr. Moore urged that individual letters from community residents are the best tactic right now, although in the future there may be targeted letter writing campaigns launched. The coalition heading this opposition to any new landfill at the Carp Road site includes No Dump, the Stittsville Village Association, Moving Mountains, the Richardson Corridor Community Association, the Huntley Manor Community Association and OttawaLandfillWatch.org. The contact point for the coalition is info@nodump.ca.

One point was all that stood between the Goulbourn Hornets Atom Girls Major AA basketball team and the championship in the recent Blessed Sacrament Tournament in Hamilton. Yes, that’s right, just one point as the London Ramblers took the gold medals with a narrow 43-42 victory over the Hornets in the final game. This Division 2B championship gold medal game saw the Hornets play a solid game, with lots of determination. However, at the final buzzer, it was London which walked away with a 43-42 win and the gold medals. The Hornets came home with the silver medals, quite an achievement for a team that has shown continual improvement since the beginning of the season. In this Blessed Sacrament Tournament, the Hornets showed their resiliency by coming back from losing their

Huskies at OFSAA

first three games in round robin play. Placed in a very strong pool with several very high caliber teams, the Hornets lost 44-19 to the Scarborough Blues, 49-28 to the St. Catharines Rebels and 47-35 to the London Ramblers #1. But in the playoff round, the Hornets found their winning ways and defeated the Flamborough Fire 41-38 to advance to the championship game against the London Ramblers. These silver medals at the Blessed Sacrament Tournament came on the heels of a bronze medal winning tournament performance by the Hornets earlier in the month. Playing in the Mike O’Connor Tournament in Gloucester, the Hornets defeated the Gloucester Wolverines and the Ottawa South Bedrock to advance to the bronze medal game against the West Island Lakers. The Hornets outscored the Lakers 44-26 in this game to win the bronze medals.

The Sacred Heart High School Huskies went into the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations’ girls’ hockey AAA/AAAA championship seeded third in the province. The National Capital Secondary Schools Athletic Association champions were looking forward to a good run at these provincial championships in Stratford from Tuesday, March 22 through Friday, March 25.. The Huskies were placed in a four-team pool including number eight seeded Napanee, number nine seeded Birchmount of Toronto and number 14 seeded St. Michael of Western Ontario. Each team in the pool played each other team before moving on to playoff action. In action on Wednesday, March 23, the Huskies dropped their first round game to St. Michael by a 4-3 score. Chelsea Lefebvre, Katelyn Fournier and Melissa Fournier scored for the Huskies in this game. It was then off to play Birchmount of Toronto in second round action. This game ended in a 2-2 tie with MacKenzie Lalonde scoring both of the goals for the Huskies. On Thursday, March 24, the Huskies met Napanee in their final round of pool play. The Huskies suffered a 4-2 loss in this game, with Katelyn Fournier and Keira St. Laurent scoring for Sacred Heart. The Huskies’ pool record of two losses and a tie saw them go up in the consolation side playoffs against number 11 seeded Holy Names which had won one game while losing two in its pool round action. Holy Names defeated the Huskies 3-2 in overtime. Scoring for the Huskies in this game were Chelsea Lefebvre and Amanda Titus. Holy Names went on to lose to Mayfield in consolation semi-final playoff action. Mayfield went on to win the consolation final.

Table tennis program for fun offered in Stittsville JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Some call it “table tennis.” Others call it “ping pong.” But no matter what you call it, the game, which has been played by generations, is a lot of fun. And that is why there is a table tennis program offered at the hall at the Johnny Leroux Stittsville Community Arena (for-

mer Stittsville District Community Centre) in Stittsville. “It’s a game for fun and that’s how it should be treated from the word ‘go’,” says Bob Schwenger, a former competitive player and now the instructor for this program which operates through the city of Ottawa’s parks and recreation department. This table tennis program runs on Tuesdays

and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A new session began on Tuesday, March 15 and will be running through to before the summer. This program is not for competitive table tennis but rather is for recreational playing. And, because it happens in the middle of the day in the middle of the week, the program mainly attracts seniors or retired people. Right now, the program is looking for more participants. At present three tables can be set up at the hall, which means that 12 people can play in doubles at one time. More tables will be set up if numbers require it. Mr. Schwenger says that anyone interested should first show up on a Tuesday or Thursday and have a look at the program. Then, if the interest remains, the person can register with the parks and recreation department, either at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville or online.

At the sessions, players rotate around so that everyone gets a chance to play with everyone else. Mr. Schwenger is on hand to provide any instruction needed and to give some playing tips. He says that it is always best for a player to have his or her own paddle (racquet) for playing but this is not required at first. For more information about this table tennis program, please contact Mr. Schwenger at 613-8367210. Table tennis originated as a sport in Britain in the 1880’s when it was played as an after-dinner parlour game, commonly known as “wiff-waff,” a name taken from the sound that the early racquets with their parchment surfaces made. Around the turn of the century, the game was known by both table tennis and ping pong. In 1921, the Table Tennis Association was founded in Britain while the International Table Tennis Federation was

started in 1926. The first official world championships were held in London in 1926. The United States Table Tennis Association was created in 1933. Table tennis was intro-

duced as an Olympic sport at the 1988 Olympics. In table tennis or ping pong, two or four players hit a lightweight hollow ball back and forth using racquets.

News JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

As Plasco Energy Group moves ever so closer to provincial government approval via a permanent permit to operate its municipal solid waste conversion facility at its Trail Road site in Nepean, the facility’s environmental impact appears to be one of its major selling points. At least that’s one message that the 60 people attending a Plasco public information meeting at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville on Monday, March 21 heard from Alisdair McLean, Plasco’s vicepresident of strategic initia-

tives, as he explained the Plasco process and current situation at the meeting. He stated that the Plasco technology is compelling in that the process creates so little impact on the environment compared to landfill technology. He noted that based on the modeling and monitoring that Plasco has done at its Trail Road site, the company is satisfied that the process is safe to people and is not harming the environment. This is based on results that show that plant emissions are well below Ministry of the Environment limits with regard to ground-level concentrations of any emissions.

Mr. McLean wasn’t quite so unequivocal and certain when it came to what it might cost for the city of Ottawa to have its waste processed at a Plasco plant. He said that tipping fees for waste at such a plant would be in the $60 to $80 per tonne range depending on what price the firm is able to get for the electricity which is produced by the plant from processing the waste. He said that at the present time Plasco does not know what price it will get for its sale of electricity, only saying that the more revenue it receives from the electricity it generates, the lower the tipping fees will be. He did, though, state that the tipping fees will be not anywhere near a figure like $110 per tonne, no matter what the elec-

tricity revenue rate might be. Plasco is seeking a permanent permit to operate the Trail Road facility as a commercial demonstration and development facility, coverting municipal solid waste into electricity and construction aggregate. Up until now, the facility has operated

as a pilot project. It received a temporary permit to operate in 2005. Plasco has possibilities of developing commercial scale facilities not only in the city of Ottawa but in Red Deer, Alberta, as well as in California, Poland, the United Kingdom and China.

Data shared at new business networking mixer JOHN CURRY

john.curry@metroland.com

It was probably just the kind of news that the business people at the inaugural meeting of a new seasonal small business networking mixer like to hear. Fifteen hundred new residents in Stittsville each year. Five hundred and thirty new homes built annually. One million square feet of retail space already approved for development along the Hazeldean Road from the Carp River west to the Carp Road … and more to come. Yes, it was information like this that helped make this new networking experience for 20 small business owners, entrepreneurs and service professionals a worthwhile and enjoyable two hour part of their morning on Friday, March 25 at the Wildwood Steak & Chop House at Amberwood Village in Stittsville. Organized by Dennis Tarrant of TeamOne-

Homes.com along with Leo Maiorino of Mortgage Brokers Ottawa, sessions such as this are going to be held in Stittsville four times a year, corresponding to the seasons of the year. At this inaugural event, it was city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri who was the guest speaker and it was he who gave the news about the new residents, new homes and new retail space in the community. He praised this new networking opportunity for the community’s business people, saying that it would be helpful in moving the small business community of Stittsville forward into the future. Councillor Qadri noted that the so-called Fernbank lands south of Hazeldean Road and north of Fernbank Road between Stittsville and Kanata will eventually have from 8,500 to 12,000 new homes, along with a major north/south artery running through it all the way from Fern-

bank Road to Hazeldean Road and beyond. He said that this new arterial road will be built up front by the developers who will be paid back as municipal development charges levied against newly built homes are paid and the developers are reimbursed for their upfront costs. In reply to a question, councillor Qadri said that he was now working with the mayor’s office to try to get some funding for the design work and Environmental Assessment work needed for the improvement of Carp Road from highway 417 south to Kittiwake Drive. There is currently no municipal funds allocated for such work and subsequent roadwork estimated at $14 million but councillor Qadri is arguing that development charges levied in Stittsville in the next four years will meet such financial demands. In addition, councillor Qadri is arguing that the Ontario Ministry of Transportation is planning to expand

the Carp Road bridge over highway 417 to two lanes heading southbound and so the city should be prepared to expand the Carp Road south of the bridge to four lanes to accommodate this improvement. All those at the networking session were given an opportunity to introduce themselves and explain their line of business.

Those attending included a banker, an investment consultant, an insurance agent, a house painter, a Telus dealer, a land development company representative, a supplier of copiers and scanners, a computer trainer, a financial planner, a property inspector, a landscaper, a mortgage broker, a private capital financier, a lawyer,

an accountant and a real estate agent. Co-organizer Dennis Tarrant said that lessons would be learned from this inaugural session, which include a free continental breakfast. “It can only get bigger and better from here,” he told those in attendance before conducting a draw for two door prizes.

Sports

john.curry@metroland.com

They came within a whisker of winning the Canadian women’s senior curling championship. Now they will see if they can top that by winning the Canadian women’s masters curling championship. We’re talking about the Rideau Curling Club rink skipped by Joyce Potter that has an allRichmond front end – lead Brenda Moffitt and second Jennifer Langley, both longtime curlers at the Richmond Curling Club. At the Canadian senior women’s curling championship in Digby, Nova Scotia last week, the Potter rink finished first in the round robin portion of the competition with a record of nine wins and just two losses. This was the same record as New Brunswick’s Heidi Hanlon but the Potter foursome had beaten the Hanlon squad 7-5 in round robin play, so first place went to the Potter rink. The first place finish meant that the Potter rink got a bye into the championship final which just happened to be against the Hanlon rink which won its semi-final game against Saskatchewan to take on Potter in the championship final. In this final game, it was a four ender in the eighth end that turned the tide in favour of the Hanlon rink which eventually won the game and the championship with an 8-6 victory. In this pivotal eighth end, a Potter attempt at a double missed, giving Hanlon, a 52 year old 11 time Scotties veteran for New Brunswick, the chance to draw for four and take a 7-5 lead in the game. The Potter rink came back with one in the ninth, making it 7-6 but the Hanlon rink held on to score one in the tenth end to win by an 8-6 count and become Canadian senior women’s curling champions. Last year the Hanlon rink lost in the championship final to British Columbia. The Hanlon rink will now go on to represent Canada at next year’s world seniors championship. The Potter rink, with its two Richmond members as well as third Diana Favel, now though still has a chance for a Canadian championship as it qualified for two national championships this year – the Canadian senior women’s for curlers aged 50 and over and the Canadian women’s masters for curlers 60 years of age and over. Indeed, the Potter rink was really formed last summer to go after the Canadian women’s masters championship. The rink had entered the Ontario senior women’s championship in midJanuary as a warmup, practice session for their upcoming pro-

vincial masters competition. However, the team won the senior provincial championship at the Lindsay Curling Club, defeating former world champion Marilyn Bodogh in the final. Then, in mid-February at Gravenhurst, the Potter rink won the provincial masters title, qualifying for a second national competition.

nipeg’s Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club from March 30 through to April 5. The competition this year will feature provincial masters curling champions not only from Ontario (the Potter rink) but also rinks from British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, New Brunswick, the Yukon, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northern Ontario and Nova Scotia. Masters curlers, 60 years of age or over, are one of Curlers Jennifer Langley, left, and the largest group of curlers in Brenda Moffitt, right.

Drive Safe This Spring Winter is finally in the rearview mirror, and while you may not have to worry about slush and sleet on the roads, the onset of warmer weather doesn’t mean that you can let your guard down when you’re behind the wheel. Drivers need to continually pay attention to road conditions and be aware of vehicles and pedestrians around them. No matter the weather, your full attention is always needed when driving. Below is a list of useful tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe while driving this spring:

Minimize Distractions Focus on the road – keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel at all times. Avoid engaging in any other activity. This includes tending to children, using electronic devices, eating, applying makeup, changing the radio/CD/ iPod and adjusting the climate controls.

Be Aware of Road Conditions

Maintain Your Vehicle Make sure your brakes, exhaust, tires, lights, battery hoses and mirrors are all in good working order. Also, keep the inside tidy – a water bottle under the brake pedal is a recipe for disaster.

Stay Visible Drive with you headlights on, even during the day. This makes you more visible to pedestrians and other drivers.

Pedestrian Safety It’s important for drivers to take extra care when turning right at a red light. Remember that pedestrians may not see or hear vehicles approach.

Be Cautious Use extra care around schools and residential neighbourhoods. Keep your eyes on the road and be on the lookout for children who may suddenly dart across the street without looking.

Always check the local weather report of your destination. Weather can decrease visibility and your ability to control the vehicle. The slightest change in the elements can alter your vehicle’s performance.

Buckle Up

Leave a Safe Distance

Don’t Drive Impaired

Maintain at least ‘three steamboats’ (seconds) between your vehicle and the one in front of you in good driving conditions. In wet conditions, leave ‘six steamboats’ and in poor/slippery conditions leave 9 – 12 seconds.

Avoid Road Rage Reduce stressful driving by getting plenty of rest and allowing extra time to arrive at your destination.

PERFORMANCE MATTERS

If you are in a collision, your chances of being injured or killed are dramatically reduced when your seatbelt is fastened. This may seem obvious, however even one drink can impact reaction time. Play it safe - if you are going to drive, don’t drink. Make alternative arrangements. For more information about how you can stay safe on the roads, visit goodhandsadvice.ca, contact your local Allstate Insurance Agency or call 1-800-allstate.

Be Courteous Use your signals – people are not mind readers. In return, give way to other drivers who have their signals on and take turns when merging into a single lane.

Spring cleaning: Top tips to freshen up your ride build–up of gunk while you drive.

(NC)—Ah, springtime. The days are getting longer, leaves are starting to sprout, and the great thaw begins. With this shift in weather comes the promise of warm summer driving and the time to prep your favorite ride for the road.

After you’ve cleaned it from the inside out, take your ride out for a spin to feel the engine roar to life. Think about your summer road trips to come, and enjoy the ride.

You should begin by washing the exterior of your vehicle, and be sure to clean underneath to remove the corrosive salt, chemicals and grime that build up from winter driving. Use a high pressure hose, paying close attention to wheel wells and bumpers.

Just like your tires, the fluids in your vehicle need to be checked each spring to ensure proper engine performance throughout the seasons. Chances are the radiator in your vehicle uses an extended–life antifreeze coolant to prevent it from freezing. Check the coolant level and quality, and consider flushing the radiator if necessary. Most vehicles require fresh coolant every 240,000 km.

Beyond these measures, helping keep your engine running at its best this spring is as easy as filling up with a high–quality gasoline. “Gasoline primarily contains carbon and hydrogen molecules, and combustion can create a residue, called “gunk, which is a build–up of carbon particles on critical engine parts, says Ken Mitchell, an Engineer from Shell Canada. “This gunk has a porous surface that can negatively affect combustion and the performance of your vehicle. Some high–quality fuels, like all three grades of Shell’s Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines, clean and protect critical engine parts from the

Next, have your tires changed and rotated to ensure best performance and safety on the roads. While winter tires work best in the snow, they can accelerate and brake poorly and offer reduced tread life on dry asphalt. Spring is the best time to swap back to your performance–oriented summer or all–season tires, storing your winter set for later.

While you’re at it, be sure to check your oil and top up the rest of your fluids. The most common grade of engine oil in Canada is 5W30 which should perform well under both winter and summer driving conditions. Consult your owner’s manual for the recommended grade and quality of oil for your vehicle, and perform an oil and oil filter change at the recommended intervals to provide year–round protection.

Why get a spring tune–up? (NC)—One of the most important things you can do to reduce your fuel consumption and emissions is to keep your vehicle properly maintained, especially after our brutal Canadian winters. Did you know, for example, that worn or malfunctioning spark plugs can cause the engine to misfire, resulting in unburned, or wasted, fuel? Dragging brakes can significantly increase fuel consumption because your vehicle has to work harder to overcome the resistance.

Consult your owner’s manual to learn about the proper care and maintenance of your vehicle. Follow all the service recommendations and change the air filter, spark plugs, engine oil and other fluids accordingly to ensure you get optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Eco-friendly toys. Jewellery. Dips and spices. Teas and accessories. Candles. Reusable diapers. Beauty, health and wellbeing products. How are these all tied together? Well, they are the items that are being sold by the seven businesses that are involved in the first-ever trade show organized by the Stittsville Le Manege cooperative child care centre at Ecole Jean-Paul II in Stittsville. And while the actual trade show itself will be held in the library of the Abbott Street school this Tuesday, April 5 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., there are online purchase opportunities that will prevail from now through to Friday, April 8. All seven of the participating trade show businesses will credit identified online purchases as well as orders by telephone or by email made during this extended time period to the fundraising campaign. A portion of all sales are being donated back to the child care centre by the participating businesses. Those planning to attend the trade show itself on Tuesday, April 5 are reminded to bring along cash if possible because some of the participating businesses do not ac-

The funds raised by this trade show initiative will be going to help fund the purchase of new outdoor toys and play structures for the children who attend the cooperative child care centre. This makes the dream of a healthy future for these girls a reality. Currently this dream is out of reach for many girls in developing countries, especially those living in such places as Lesotho in southern Africa who are now orphans because of HIV/AIDS. Lesotho is a small country bordered on all sides by South Africa.
