‘Motor Mouth’ returns Renowned announcer back at Capital City JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

ANNIVERSARY

St. Philip Catholic School in Richmond marks 50th. 6

“Motor Mouth” is back. Longtime and renowned stock car racing announcer Brian “Motor Mouth” Goudge is returning this season to his familiar spot behind the microphone at Capital City Speedway. He agreed to come back after missing last season when Todd Gow, who has taken over management of the track this season, asked him earlier this year. And why did Todd make this move? Simple. “Because he is the best,” Todd readily acknowledges, knowing that having “Motor Mouth” behind the microphone will add to the entertainment value for Speedway fans. See ‘MOTOR MOUTH’, page 2

Helping Dominican Republic JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Not everyone can travel to the Dominican Republic and provide a helping hand to people there. Students from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville will be undertaking such a trip next February but the help and assistance that they will be taking with them will be from fundraising initiatives being carried out now. One of these is a giant garage sale which is being held on Saturday, June 4 at

the school. And what is great about this giant garage sale is that everyone in the community gets an opportunity to be involved and in essence help out the people of the Dominican Republic who will be visited by the Sacred Heart students. And just how can everyone in the community be involved in this giant garage sale on Saturday, June 4? Well, in one of two ways – either by donating items for the garage sale or by actually attending the garage sale and making a purchase. See GARAGE SALE, page 5

From page 1 While “Motor Mouth” has not announced at Capital City Speedway (and its aliases like the Ottawa Valley Speedway and the Ottodrome International Speedway), for all of its 50 years of operation, he began about 1976 when Dave Booth ran it as the Ottawa Valley Speedway. He continued through the Penny Bell management years and then returned later, stepping aside last season. Besides his years at Capital City Speedway, “Motor Mouth” has announced at Kawartha Speedway, Brockville Speedway, Airborne International Speedway and Thunder Road. He has also served as the voice of the Great Race from 1995 to 2008, taking part in numerous timed and controlled speed and distance rally competitions across both Canada and the United States. It all began for “Motor Mouth” over 40 years ago and quite by accident. He went out to watch some snowmobile racing at Sand-Del-Lee Speedway, operated by his longtime friend, the late Dale Argue. However, Dale had forgotten to arrange for an announcer. “Here Brian, you are a motor mouth,” he said as he handled Brian the microphone to announce the races. And not only the job of announcing but the moniker of “Motor Mouth” stuck. The Kanata resident still does announcing and commentating at special events like golf tournaments but announcing at stock car races is his passion and something of a labour of love. It has to be because “Motor Mouth” does not approach it casually. “It takes a lot of energy to do the work the way I want,” “Motor Mouth” says, giving a couple of tips for top notch announcing. An announcer has to know the classes, the cars and the drivers, “Motor Mouth” says and, more importantly, has to add excitement to the races. “You have to make every race exciting,” he says, noting that an announcer like himself has to describe a race as passionately as possible in order to get the fans into it. It all comes back to a love of what you are doing since it takes every ounce of passion that you can generate, he adds. Another key is to be aware of the sponsors and encourage the fans to support them.

John Curry photo

Brian “Motor Mouth” Goudge “Sponsor recognition – it’s a big deal,” he says, adding that this recognition might come in mentioning the sponsor’s name if it is on the side of a competing car. But perhaps most importantly, a stock car race announcer has to be prepared and informed. “It’s like everything else…you have to do your homework,” says “Motor Mouth” who as a retired elementary school principal should know a little about the value of homework. He follows the action at 15 race tracks in Ontario to keep in touch with various drivers, some of whom might show up at Capital City Speedway on occasion. You have to know who the drivers are and their characters and backgrounds, “Motor Mouth” says, adding that he keeps a history on all of them who race at Capital City Speedway. He says that his first hour each Wednesday at the Speedway sees him down in the pit area with his notebook, visiting with every driver to discover any news or changes made to the car. It may seem like little stuff at times but he uses such information to build his banter behind the microphone. He emphasizes that it is important to collect as much information as possible, be a about a driver or a sponsor or anything that he can use when announcing. “You just don’t show up and talk,” he says, reiterating that there is a lot of preparation that needs to be done which is why it helps when an announcer has a love and passion for the sport. He is provided with the up-todate records for the drivers on the Sunday before the Wednesday racing so that he can be current about the heats and features that they have won over the season and can add these details in to his announcing banter. This is done because fans want to know such details, he says.

Todd Gow, the new operator of the Capital City Speedway west of Stittsville, holds a giant poster advertising a former Cascar stock car racing series at the track. This newly framed poster will be among the area’s stock car racing memorabilia that will be on display in the new Nostalgia Room at Capital City Speedway.

will be the focus this year. And it will begin right with the admission price. There is, this season, special family pricing where a family of four – two adults and two youngsters under 12– will be admitted for $25 total. What a deal when the regular adult admission price is $13! Todd points out that the family pricing works out to half the cost of taking in a movie and he boasts that he will put up the entertainment value of an evening at Capital City Speedway against any movie showing anywhere. Indeed, he sounds a little like Kevin Costner in “Field of Dreams” when he predicts: “If I can get them here once, they will come back.” And just what is going to ensure this? Well, there’s the stock car racing action on the track, to be sure. But Todd sees a bigger picture. He wants to ensure a good experience for the visitor from the moment that he or she drives in to when the evening is done. This involves having a new mascot; implementing a meet-the-driver attraction at the main gate, featuring one car and driver per class, where youngsters and adults can chat with the drivers and get to see a car up close; having autograph cards for all the drivers to give out, something that Todd believes is an essential part of the whole racing experience for a fan or

would-be fan; having a big inflatable tire on site; having a better canteen; and bringing back the renowned track announcer, Brian “Motor Mouth” Goudge who was missing

Entering its 50th anniversary year of operation, Capital City Speedway has new management and a new focus as a family entertainment destination. Todd Gow, who has driven at Capital City Speedway for the past six years and has been a fan there since his teens, even having taken his wife there on some of their first dates, has taken over manage-

ment of the facility. His successful pitch to the owners was that he would not be viewing it strictly as a racetrack but as an entertainment facility. “You don’t have to be a race car fan to come and be entertained,” Todd says about what Capital City Speedway will be like this season. “Our target market this year is families,” he adds, noting that fun and affordable family entertainment

ing new paint and the advertising billboards are being re-arranged. Flowers and shrubs are being planted at the rear of the grandstand. Yes, the track is getting back the luster from its glory years.

Capital City Speedway turns 50 From page 3 Todd himself remembers the track in its heyday when the stands filled up quickly and you had to be there early to get a favourite seating spot. He himself has been a Speedway fan since he was 16 years old and he had his favourite spot in the grandstand, just coming out of corner number four. Six years ago, he began racing himself, in the mini-legend/ legend classes. As one might expect from such a longtime fan, especially in this, the track’s 50th anniversary year, Todd has developed a Nostalgia Room which features numerous framed old photographs of racers of the past, including an aerial photo of Lansdowne Park when it was home to a car racing track in the 1950’s, a 1925 photo showing car racing at Lansdowne Park, old posters advertizing stock car racing at Lansdowne Park and numerous old photos of racers at Capital City Speedway. This Nostalgia Room, located in a ground-floor room at the rear of the grandstand, also has a 1965 Capital City Speedway program showing all of the racers in the different classes, as well as other stock car racing memorabilia. This Nostalgia Room will also have a TV screen showing film footage of racing from years past. Todd also has plans to launch a Capital City Wall of Fame later this year. There will be a call for nominations and online voting. He foresees two drivers and two builders being the inaugural inductees this year. He says that there are lots of people who have been part of the racing fraternity for years and who have contributed to stock car racing in the community over the years. The Wall of Fame will be a way of recognizing and honouring these folks. Capital City Speedway was all set to launch its 50th anniversary season on Wednesday, May 18 but rainy weather with the threat of more that evening forced a cancellation of this opening night. It was rescheduled for Wednesday, May 25. This 50th anniversary year will see racing every Wednesday starting at 7:30 p.m., including Late Model, Thunder Cars, Mini Stocks, Legends and 4-Fun classes. From now through to the end of August, there will be numerous special Wednesday night features – Demolition Derby, 100 lap Enduro, Fan Appreciation Night and CHEO Bed Race. The year will wrap up on Saturday, Sept. 10 with Monster Trucks, a Motorcycle Aerial Show, a Demolition Derby and

various races. Stock car racing in the Ottawa area goes back more than 60 years. It took place on a track cut out of a farmer’s field near Carsonby in 1949. However, the location was abandoned after only one season. A second attempt to launch stock car racing in the area happened a year or two later when a dirt track with banked corners called Meadow Park Speedway was set up in a field just west of Bells Corners. Support, though, was sporadic and the track folded and efforts were focussed on having a more central location for stock car racing in the area. This happened when the first evening of stock car racing was held at Lansdowne Park In Ottawa on June 1, 1955, with the track set up around the outside of the football field. More than 5,000 fans attended this initial night of racing on the quarter mile dirt oval, a former horse racing track. By 1956, more than 40 local cars and drivers were registered with the Lansdowne Park Stock Car Racing Club for the weekly racing every Wednesday evening. After two successful seasons, race promoter Gerry Bisson worked with the Central Canada Exhibition Association, operators of Lansdowne Park, to make some improvements at what was then known as Lansdowne Speedway. The track was lengthened to one-third of a mile in length and was widened to 40 feet with increased banking on the corners. The track was paved and a guard rail installed around the track’s perimeter. The racing included a variety of special attractions as well, such as late model events, power pull races and demolition derbies. Additional races were held on Fridays and Saturdays as Lansdowne Speedway increased in popularity, drawing competitors from Montreal and upper New York State as well as local drivers. This racing at Lansdowne Speedway lasted until August 17, 1960. It ceased because of public pressure over the noise created and because of plans to replace the north side grandstand with the Ottawa Civic Centre and to construct a south side stands, eliminating the track. With no more racing at Lansdowne, promoter Gerry Bisson undertook the construction of a new, then state-of-theart race track just off the new highway seven west of Stittsville. This new Capital City Speedway opened for business in 1961, beginning its run at the site which marks its 50th anniversary year this year.

Indeed, you can do both if you wish. It is just a fact that the more successful the giant garage sale is, the more funds will be raised, helping to increase the total funds that the students will be taking with them to help out in the Dominican Republic. In February of next year, a group of 30-plus students and six teachers from Sacred Heart will be travelling to the Dominican Republic, the largest such group yet from Sacred Heart. This will be the third Dominican Republic trip involving Sacred Heart, with one taking place every two years. Students, in either grade 11 or 12, apply to be part of the so-called Dominican Experience, with the application process consisting of a letter, a reference package and an interview. These selected students raise upwards of $15,000 in total which goes completely to help out in the Dominican Republic. Travel expenses are the responsibility of each student. All of the fundraising happens in the period from March to June of the school year before the trip, in other words, right now for next February’s trip. This fundraising has included a talent show with raffle draw, a silent auction at the school’s recent Education Week open house, inschool barbecues and this upcoming giant garage sale. The fundraising is concentrated in this period because these students will have other things to keep them busy in the coming school year. From September through to February when the trip happens, the students focus on social justice issues to become more familiar with situations that they may encounter in the Dominican Republic. In addition, they work on Spanish language skills and also focus on their school work, since many of them will be in their final grade 12 school year. The social justice focus includes involvement with the Shepherds of Good Hope and the Mission in downtown Ottawa. This also serves as something of an eye-opening experience for the students. It can, in fact, result in some students withdrawing from the trip, just too overcome when faced with such homelessness and poverty even here in their home community. In the Dominican Republic, the students work with the Grey Sisters who are involved with orphanages, palliative care facilities and schools. The students visit these facilities as well as sugar cane plantations, medical centres, fair trade coops and virtually any other place where they can help. The students’ actions can range from picking up garbage to cleaning up after a fire to just playing with local children, getting to know them. “We do not come in to save the world,” Sacred Heart teacher Marie Burnett, who is one of the organizers of the Dominican Republic trips at the school, says with regard to what the students do when in the Dominican Repulbic. Rather, the aim of the experience is for the students to get “a sense of a broader human experience.” “I think they just get a broader vision of the world,” Ms. Burnett says in summing up the benefit of the trip for the students. And this may show itself in many ways, all the way from realizing that there

is a need to share more of the world’s resources with the less fortunate to simple acts like turning off the water tap when brushing their teeth at home, realizing how precious water is, especially in a country like the Dominican Republic. In the Dominican Republic, students are billeted two to a home in a community of teachers. While there, they eat the beans and rice that is the staple of the local diet and at the end of the week, the students actually have a say as to where their funds should go, depending on the needs that they have observed and where the greatest need is at that time. Ms. Burnett has noticed that over the course of the week, the students grow in resiliency, slowly realizing that they can cope in such circumstances. They become more self-confident and able to cope with whatever comes their way. “I’m looking mostly for resiliency,” Ms. Burnett says in explaining what she expects to see as the students undergo their Dominican experience. Besides taking money, the students also jam their luggage with items that are targeted to be donated to those in the Dominican Republic. All of their personal clothing, etc. is carried in a knapsack; all of the travel luggage is jammed with items to be donated there. The students will be holding their giant garage sale to help raise funds for the Dominican Republic on Saturday, June 4 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the school which is on Abbott Street at Shea Road in Stittsville. Right now, the students are accepting any items that people are willing to donate for this giant garage sale. Virtually all items will be gladly accepted but there are exceptions. No electronic equipment and no appliances, please. But there is so much that can be donated – virtually anything that you would see at a normal driveway garage sale. If you have any doubts at all about an item to be donated, just call the school at 613-831-0545. As for items that you want to donate, just drop them off at the school’s main office at any time. And whether you have items to donate or not, please consider attending the giant garage sale. You might find that one thing that you have been seeking lately. But just remember – your donated item or your purchase on the day of the giant garage sale will all help raise funds that will be going directly to help out in some way in the Dominican Republic. The funds will be going directly to help the people there thanks to the efforts of the Grey Sisters and these Sacred Heart students. The funds do not – we repeat, do not – go to any travel expenses – these are all handled directly by the students and their families themselves. That’s what makes this giant garage sale so great – it is a way of supporting the less fortunate in the Dominican Republic directly. Every dollar raised will end up doing some good work in that poverty-ridden country. And whatever is left over after the giant garage sale ends does not go to landfill. It will be going to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or some other local agency, for use in some way locally. For any more information about the giant garage sale, please call the school at 613-831-0545.

St. Philip Parish in Richmond has had a close relationship with the adjacent St. Philip Catholic School since the school’s opening in 1960. And so it is no surprise that a landmark event in the celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary year should be a celebratory mass held in the school’s gymnasium on Friday, May 20. This parish/school relationship was further enhanced by the unveiling and presentation of a statue of the Holy Family following the mass. This statue, donated by the parish through the efforts of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Women’s League, will be placed in the school’s newly created butterfly garden. In presiding over the unveiling and blessing of the statue, Rev. Giles Joly of St. Philip’s Parish said that the parish wanted to recognize the school’s 50 year achievement by presenting this very special statue depicting the Holy Family – Mary, Joseph and the young Jesus. He said that this statue of the Holy Family has a deep meaning for the parish through its representation of the family, an important cornerstone for both the parish and the school. St. Philip Catholic School in Richmond had its beginnings when two parishioners of St. Philip Church, Harry Beingessner and Les Jennings, approached the parish priest, Father Thomas O’Rourke, with the idea of building a Catholic elementary school in the village. Parishioners in the area got on board with the idea and with the Archdiocese providing the site for a token sum, a new four classroom school was constructed, officially opening on Monday, Sept. 12, 1060. The school grew, with two more classrooms and a gymnasium added in 1965 and seven more classrooms along with other rooms like a library added in 1970. Enrolment grew from the initial 80 students to almost 500 students at one time. In 2004, a library/computer lab complex was added, giving the school a stateof-the-art high tech information centre. In 2009, St. Philip became a dual track school, providing both French Immersion and extended French education options.

From page 6 Ottawa Catholic School Board director of education Julian Hanlon also referenced the parish/school/home relationship that has existed at St. Philip’s for the past 50 years. “I think this community exemplifies what we value in Catholic education, the partnership between home, school and church,” he said. He went on to praised and thank the school’s staff members, both current and past, for their work and efforts in ensuring that St. Philip students become valued and contributing members of society. St. Philip School Council chair Colleen Piercey, in her remarks, praised the school’s dedicated staff and noted how the students thrive in the school’s environment. She thanked the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Women’s League and St. Philip’s Parish for the beautiful statue that will be such a marvelous addition to the school’s new butterfly garden. Following the mass and the subsequent proceedings, a reception was held in the gymnasium where former teachers, students and parents were able to mingle and share memories and recollections. A

50 years - A mark of purpose There are two 50th anniversaries being celebrated locally by two very different entities but perhaps, on examination, they are not as different as they may seem. They may both be meeting needs that are just as relevant today or perhaps even more so than they were 50 years ago. St. Philip Catholic School in Richmond is marking its 50th anniversary year this school year. It was founded in 1960 as the parishioner parents of St. Philip Catholic Church wanted something more for their children than an education of the three R’s (Reading, writing and arithmetic) – they wanted an education where a fourth R, religion, was a focus. And so St. Philip Catholic School was started and over the past 50 years, it has provided a Catholic educa-

tion to the Catholic children of the greater Richmond area. It has not only served its purpose over the past half century but it continues today as a vibrant, respected educational institution. It is just as relevant and wanted today as it was for those initial parents back in 1960. While it is totally different than a school and has a totally different relevance and impact on society, the Capital City Speedway west of Stittsville is entering its 50th anniversary year this year. And while a school such as St. Philip’s has a great impact and importance to society, we would suggest that a facility like the Capital City Speedway also plays an important role in our local world. After all, fun and relaxation and entertainment are very much a part of life.

Capital City Speedway has provided over its 50 years of continuous operation a venue where those who are passionate about stock car racing can gather and enjoy their sport. There have been, over the years, many moments of joy and other moments of heartbreak at the Capital City track. It has all been good clean fun and entertainment and that is why the track remains as relevant today as when it began in 1961. It is no flash in the pan; it has served a purpose over the years and is continuing to do so today. When things last for 50 years, they are usually things which have meaning, which have duration, which have a function that surpasses fads and quick fixes. When something provides something to society, it sticks around.

COLUMN

Why you don’t throw your column into the ring My former Ottawa Citizen colleague Randall Denley has decided to abandon his newspaper column at least temporarily and run for the Conservatives in the next Ontario election. His opponent, the Liberal incumbent Bob Chiarelli, will be all but drooling as he sees a chance at revenge for the nasty things Denley has written about him over the years, beginning when Chiarelli was mayor of Ottawa. That’s one of the differences between columning and politics. In politics, your opponents can get revenge. In journalism, your opponents can issue a denial, or write a letter to the editor, both of which are less than satisfying. There are other differences, which help to explain why most columnists choose to remain columnists rather than enter politics: — A columnist does not have to smile all the time, or ever. — A columnist does not have to attend ribbon-cuttings and banquets in honour of causes he has never heard of. — A columnist finishes the

CHARLES GORDON day’s column and goes home. A politician goes on to the next event. — A columnist rarely turns on the TV to find someone denouncing him on the news. — When a columnist is not interested in the burning issue of the day, he writes about something else, such as cats. When a politician is not interested in the burning issue of the day, he has to be interested in the burning issue of the day anyway. — A columnist does not have to pose wearing silly hats. — A politician’s enemies scour his previous speeches for embarrassing utterances or signs of flip-flop. A columnist’s previous utterances are safely wrapping fish. — Unless he chooses to write about them, nobody knows anything about a columnist’s family, hobbies or religious views.

For a politician, all those things are on public display. — On a good newspaper, a columnist can publicly disagree with the policies of his bosses. Try that in any party caucus. — A columnist is allowed to have a sense of humour. Politicians who make jokes are immediatley denounced by representatives of interest groups who are offended. There are, to be sure, some similarities in the two occupations. A columnist can dust off an old column on a slow day, and a politician can trot out an old speech. A politician can invent and demolish straw men. So can a columnist. Both politician and columnist develop the art of feigned outrage. Denley said an honourable thing in announcing his candidacy: “As a newspaper columnist you can say: ‘Other people should do this, other people should do that.’ You can’t really do anything yourself. If you’re going to make a difference,

you have to get involved in the process.” Some columnists would disagree, saying that they are contributing to the process by influencing public opinion. But it is true that it takes far more courage to become actively involved than it does to stand on the sidelines making pungent comments. Other columnists have made the decision Denley has made. It worked for some of them. Christy Clark once wrote a weekly column in Vancouver and is now premier of British Columbia. On the other hand, Michael Valpy, a Toronto Globe and Mail political writer, ran unsuccessfully for the NDP in

2000 and returned to the paper where he does not write about politics. Then there is Garth Turner, a business columnist for the Toronto Sun who sat for many years as a Conservative member of Parliament but was tossed from the caucus in 2006 for being too independent, a trait columnists have. Then he moved to the Liberals and was defeated. Another guy who used to write a column: Michael Ignatieff. And that leads to the biggest difference between the politician and the columnist: When the readers don’t like a columnist on election day, he’s still a columnist the next day. That’s why most columnists stay put, and gratefully do so.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

The tradition of fiddling and stepdancing is alive and well. The proof of this could be found at the ninth annual fiddle and stepdance competition hosted by the Ottawa Fiddle and Dance Association this past Victoria Day weekend at the Richmond Curling Club in Richmond. Talent was exhibited in all age groups. The youngest stepdancer was just four and a half years old as was the youngest fiddler. And competitors ranged all the way up to the oldest fiddler who was over 70 and yet could churn out a lively

reel for a most appreciative audience. Yes, indeed, fiddling and stepdancing are in good hands and these traditions should be around for years and years to come. Competitors in this ninth annual competition came from various spots across Eastern Ontario and even from New York State. In the novice categories, dancers performed a reel and while fiddlers played a reel. More veteran performers each danced a clog, jig and reel or played a clog, jig and reel if a fiddler. The stepdancers all performed to live fiddling accompanied by a pianist. The house fiddler for this

Fiddling and stepdancing, both traditional and modern – ingredients that guarantee an afternoon of unforgettable entertainment. That’s what’s in store for those who attend the annual concert and dance recital by the Chad Wolfe Studio of Dance and Music at the Sacred Heart High School theatre on Sunday, June 5 at 1 p.m. Entitled “Braving the Elements,” the concert/recital will feature a colourful and energizing blend of fiddling, traditional stepdance and modern stepdance which involves elaborate costumes, sets and choreography done to various genres of contemporary music. The Chat Wolfe Stepdancers, an award winning competitive dance team that has performed at Stittsville’s Villagefest as well as at last December’s inaugural

Stittsville Christmas Festival Concert, will be among the performers. The Chad Wolfe Studio of Dance and Music specializes in fiddling and stepdancing Ottawa Valley style which is a lively and entertaining regional form of dance with Irish and Scottish roots that first began in the early 1900’s and is still popular today. Stepdancing is traditionally danced to fiddle music, another significant aspect of Canada’s heritage. A number of the performers in this upcoming concert and dance recital are coming from their recent performances at the Victoria weekend Ottawa Fiddle and Stepdance Competition which was held in Richmond, capturing numerous top five placements. Tickets for this concert and dance recital will be available at the door at Sacred Heart High School for $15 per person. The doors will open at 12:30 p.m., just before the show begins.

A fire station, with its fire trucks and, yes, firefighters, is always a fascinating place for youngsters – and adults too, for that matter. And it was no different on Friday, May 20 when youngsters from the Stittsville Cooperative nursery School visited the Stittsville fire station on Stittsville Main Street. And what a visit it was! The youngsters learned about fire safety and were given a tour of the station, especially those giant fire trucks. They even all had an opportunity to sit in the cab of a fire truck, just like a real firefighter would do when rushing to a fire scene. The Nursery School youngsters also were treated to a demonstration of how the bunker gear that the firefighters wear to protect themselves at fire and other emergency scenes works. The youngsters learned how a firefighter breathes with the help of an air tank, allowing him or her to move through a smoky fire scene. They also got to hear what the voice of a firefighter wearing an air mask sounds like. Hopefully they will never have to hear such a voice in a fire situation but if they do, they will now know that that is the voice of help and they will react positively, not with fear. And the fire station can be a place of great fun. Just ask the youngsters as they got to enjoy a scavenger hunt while on their visit to the station. In this scavenger hunt, the youngsters had to find different kinds of trucks and firefighting equipment. Great fun but also great education and something that the youngsters will remember forever thanks to the cooperation and friendliness of the firefighters. They are one super bunch.

You will even be able to register your child for the upcoming 20112012 school year if you like what you see. There are still some spots open at the Nursery School for the coming school year. A registration session was held last April but you may have missed it. That is why the Nursery School is holding an open house final registration and fundraising BBQ on Sunday, May 29 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Nursery

This is being held in conjunction with the Crossing Bridge communitywide garage sale taking place at the same time, so you can combine the two events and have a great time. At the open house and registration, parents will be able to tour the Nursery School facility, talk to some of the teachers and, if you like what you see and hear, register a child for the upcoming year. Peace of Mind has never come easier. Or for less.

A hopefully warm, sunny late May afternoon. Idyllic. The convenient, beautiful setting of Village Square Park in the heart of Stittsville. Marvellous. A showcase of the creative works of both local artists and authors. Spectacular. All together on one afternoon in the sixth annual “Artists and Authors in the Park” event hosted by the Stittsville Village Association. Virtually priceless. That’s why everyone is encouraged to attend this annual celebration of the creative works of local artists and authors, being held this Sunday, May 29 from

noon until 5 p.m. Admission is free. But there will be more than just the presence of autographed books, paintings, drawings, photographs, ceramic pieces and their creators. There will be a performance by the Stittsville Concert Band, a BBQ offered by the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville, readings by exhibiting authors, children’s storytime thanks to the Stittsville branch of the Ottawa Public Library, a puppet show, crafts for children and a youth poetry contest. Children’s writer Mary Anne Marston will entertain younger literary fans with a reading and activity from her recent book, “Charlie’s Socks.”

Affordability tips for first time homebuyers

(NC)—Owning your first home is a milestone as well as an exciting experience. However, many first time homebuyers can be nervous about the process, as they don’t know what to expect or how to make the best decisions. RBC Royal Bank research shows that homebuyers between the ages of 18–34 worry that buying their first home will mean living outside their means. “With the proper advice and budgeting tools you can still live within your means and purchase your first home – you can do both,” said Kavita Joshi, director, Client Strategies. “A mortgage specialist can help you understand all the financial aspects of owning your first home, by offering tailored advice and support.” Joshi offers a number of tips to help first time homebuyers stretch their dollars even further: Determine how much you can afford – before beginning your house search in earnest, review down payment options, household income, current debt, estimated monthly housing–related costs and closing costs.

CREATE YOUR WISH LIST ESTABLISH YOUR DOWN PAYMENT AMOUNT It’s helpful to establish an amount you are comfortable with prior to making your purchase. You’ll be glad to know that there are options available depending on how much of a down payment you can afford. FACTOR IN YOUR CLOSING COSTS It helps to know upfront what your closing costs will be. When calculating closing costs, it’s fairly safe to assume you’ll need at least an additional 1.5 per cent of the purchase price. GET PRE–APPROVED FOR YOUR MORTGAGE If you are unsure you qualify for a mortgage or how much you qualify for, speak with a mortgage specialist who can see if you can pre–qualify, so you’ll know what your mortgage options will be. UNDERSTAND YOUR PAYMENT OPTIONS Many first–time homebuyers give more thought to interest rates than the mortgage solution itself. While rates certainly have to be considered, the different types of mortgages, various payment structures, terms and

flexibility may have a much greater bearing on your overall costs of homeownership. CONSIDER UNFORESEEN EXPENSES AHEAD OF TIME When you’re buying a home for the first time, there are a number of related costs that you may not be familiar with, including: professional home inspection, lawyer fees, land transfer tax, property tax and property insurance. You also should take into account “one–time” costs, such as moving expenses, and ongoing costs, such as heating, electricity and water. BE REALISTIC You may be under–or over–estimating how much you can afford for a home. Online mortgage calculators make it easier to estimate accurately, by providing you with information on the maximum mortgage payment amount you can afford each month. Check your local mortgage specialist or bank for up to date information. LOVE YOUR NEW HOME Once you’ve received the keys to your new home, it will be time to sit back and enjoy every minute of being a new homeowner.

Smart Move. Smart Home.

That’s what 12 year old Bren Hunter of Stittsville is following his participation in the World Karate Council’s national championships this past weekend at the Delta Hotel in downtown Ottawa. Bren will now be competing in the World Karate Association’s Canadian championships in Montreal in June. This may lead to an invitation to attend the World Karate Association world championships which would leave him with a decision about which world championship event to attend. The whole season, though, is exhibition football play, meant to just provide some football experience for these high schoolers. Indeed, the Sacred Heart squad is comprised almost totally of grade nine students who in the fall will be forming the core of the school’s junior football team. Thanks to this informal spring football program, they will be going into the fall season with a little bit more experience and knowledge about the game.

Villanova Dental Studio - Patients don’t like leaving It’s one of life’s basic beliefs – people do not like to go to the dentist. Well, you can throw this belief out along with the notion that the world is flat and other traditional misconceptions thanks to the appearance of the new Villanova Dental Studio at the Grant Crossing shopping area on Hazeldean Road. As dentist Dr. Ami Barakat says, most of the patients who

See VILLANOVA, page 22

Musical set in ancient China From page 20 “Mulan Jr.” is set in ancient China during the Hun invasion, telling the tale of the tomboy Mulan who disguises herself as a soldier to save her aged father from fighting in the war. The Ancestors send the mischievous dragon Mushu to protect Mulan and help her on her journey. Together with Captain Shang and his ragtag Chinese army, they must try to save the Emperor from the Huns. For ten year old Shannon McIlquham, a grade five student at A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary School in Stittsville, this production gives her an opportunity to do what she loves to do, sing and act. She plays the role of Lin, one of the Ancestors. “I really love to sing and act,” she said following a rehearsal last Saturday. Although this is her first time performing with the KT Kids, she has performed in several productions at her school. Mackenzie Corson, 13, who is a grade eight student at Goulbourn Middle School, is a veteran with the KT Kids, having performed in other productions. In “Mulan Jr.,” she plays multiple roles including the part of QianPo, a soldier in the army. Like Shannon, Mackenzie enjoys the singing and acting involved in the play but also points to her enjoyment of the whole atmosphere associated with theatre, with everyone being really nice and friendly with one another. She predicts that “Mulan Jr.” will be really enjoyable to watch, simply because the cast will be having so much fun on stage. She feels that the audience will be able to recognize this and as a result will pick up on the feeling and have fun itself. Mackenzie admits that she would definitely love to be involved in professional theatre later in life although she says that remaining involved with amateur theatre as well would be a consideration. Fourteen year old Cassie Harrison, now a grade nine student at Bell High School and a for-

mer Goulbourn Middle School student, has been performing on stage since she was about seven years of age, including last year’s musical at Goulbourn Middle School. She is playing the role of one of the Ancestors in “Mulan Jr.” She also testifies to a love of acting, finding it fun. “We’re really a family here,” she says about the KT Kids troupe. “I feel I am in my element when I’m on stage,” Cassie says while admitting that the “Mulan Jr.” musical is a challenging production because of the on-stage action which includes sword fighting. She herself dreams of someday performing on Broadway or in Hollywood – anyplace with performance lights. The KT Kids presentation of “Mulan Jr.” is filled with humour and features such songs as “Reflection” and “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You.” The production also features colourful costumes. The KT Kids troupe began six years ago as a ten week experiment when a handful of children of Kanata Theatre members were invited to attend weekly seminars on various aspects of stage production. Under the guidance of Andrew Williams, who is directing “Mulan Jr.,” the group has flourished into a troupe of 35 talented youth which now includes members not only from Kanata but also from Stittsville and Carp. The KT Kids will be presenting the musical “Mulan Jr.” on Friday, June 3 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at the Ron Maslin Playhouse off Terry Fox Drive just north of Hazeldean Road in Kanata. All tickets are five dollars each. To order, please call the box office at 613-831-4435 and leave a message; all calls will be returned. The 1998 Walt Disney animated film “Mulan” on which “Mulan Jr.” is based was a critically acclaimed film, grossing over $300 million and earning both Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.

keeping with the overall atmosphere but for the very practical matter of providing privacy for customers in their financial dealings. That is why payment and other matters are discussed in a private office adjoining the main waiting area. In similar fashion, Dr. Barakat’s consultation area adjoins the waiting area, featuring sliding doors that provide privacy in the room that features a round, modern pedestal meeting table as well as a waterfall wall – nothing traditional about this. But wait until you get beyond the waiting area – for one thing, you enter a world where there are curved, not straight, walls. No institutional, traditional look here. And each room has a name. There’s the Tranquility Suite where Dr. Barakat does his neuromuscular dentistry; there’s the Transformation Suite and Enhancement Suite where the regular dentistry happens; and there’s the Crystal Suite and Pearl Suite, both dental hygiene rooms. Each of these rooms has a television up in the ceiling, so that when a patient is undergoing treatment, he or she can look up and enjoy a television program. There is also the option to listen to music thanks to an ipod dock in every room. In addition, every chair has a massage feature – another spa-like feature. All of the x-rays are digital; it is a paperless environment; there is laser equipment that often eliminates the need for painful anesthetic shots; crowns can be milled on site; and there is more, including an informative website at www.villanovadental.com. “Anything useful dentistry has to offer, I have,” says Dr. Barakat. But he readily admits that while techniques and equipment both have improved, there still is the sound of the drill and the presence of needles at times. He notes the growth in cosmetic dentistry as more and more people want not only to have their teeth in good shape but want that whiter appearance that cosmetic dentistry provides. Cosmetic dentistry includes such advanced treatments as smile makeovers and tooth coloured fillings, creating a natural looking smile. General dentistry treatments, as provided by Dr. Barakat, help a patient maintain proper dental hygiene and oral health. Neuromuscular dentistry is practiced by Dr. Barakat who has received hundreds of hours of training to help improve the lives of people suffering from migraines, neck issues, ear problems, vertigo and other symptoms as well as to improve their smiles. Dr. Barakat explains that the office design and layout is his own unique vision that he has developed over time from his travels in Canada and the Unit-

Dr. Ami Barakat ed States, merging the best of what he has seen into what he is now offering at Villanova Dental Studio. And added to this is the team of hygenists, assistants and administrative staff that is joining Dr. Barakat at this new Villanova Dental Studio, almost all of whom have been with him at his original location at Dentistry at Main at the Shops of Main Street plaza in Stittsville and some still rotate between the two offices. Dentistry at Main continues to be a Dr. Barakat operation, although he now has an associate dentist there helping him out as he gets the Villanova Dental Studio up and running at full steam. Dr. Barakat is so proud of his new Villanova Dental Studio and its innovations that he wants people to see and experience it. That is why he is holding a grand opening this Saturday, May 28 as a day of fun, food, giveaways, an on-location radio broadcast and an appearance by Juno Award winner Kellylee Evans. Imagine, a grand opening for a dental office – this may be the first time ever. “I want to show it off,” Dr. Barakat says, adding that he believes that people cannot really get an appreciation of this whole new revolutionary concept until they actually see it. “It’s outside of the box thinking,” he says about the whole concept. The Villanova Dental Studio opened in the last week of February. The name Villanova came about after some months of thought, with the name, which means “new town” seeming to be appropriate for a new business in a new plaza in a booming new area of the city. “It fits and it’s working for us,” Dr. Barakat says about the name. He picked the location at Grant Crossing as it is close to Dentistry at Main office and as a Stittsville resident, he wanted somewhere close to home as well. “It’s close and it’s booming,” is how Dr. Barakat explains his new location, noting that soon with the growth taking place there will be no separation between Stittsville and Kanata. Villanova Dental Studio can be contacted at 613-836-3330 or via email at ami@villanovadental.com. Or plan to drop into the grand opening event this Saturday, May 28 where you can enjoy the fun and entertainment and enjoy as well a tour of this spalike dental office.
