A cruise ship floated alongside Stittsville Main Street last Sunday afternoon, June 5. On the outside, it looked like the Stittsville Villa Seniors Community but on the inside, it had all of the trappings of a cruise ship – entertainment, delicious food of all kinds, a friendly crew and happy passengers wearing colourful leis. It was all part of a voyage called “reveralicious,” a celebration of food from the Villa’s everyday and special occasion menus, a nation-wide event by Revera, the owner of the Stittsville Villa along with over 250 other locations in the country. But the Stittsville Villa added a twist to event, focusing on a cruise ship theme to add even more fun for everyone – residents who packed the Villa’s lounge area which became the ship’s main deck, with entertainment and lots of crew, many wearing sailor hats, circulating with trays of the scrumptious sample dishes such as chicken marcella, crab on a croissant, shrimp perdon and the old standby, cheese and crackers. And don’t forget the iced tea and then the dessert samples – fruit, custard tarts, chocolate covered strawberries – what a cruise! See CRUISE SHIP, page 3

Father’s Day is coming up. So is Canada Day. And so are the hazy, lazy days of summer. A lot of people compare the Villa to a cruise ship experience with its food and entertainment, so it was decided to put a cruise ship spin on the reveralicious event, explained Lisa Cowan, executive director of the Stittsville Villa Seniors Community. But the cruise ship theme was only providing the stage on which to highlight the food that plays such a role in the everyday lives of Villa residents. “It’s more about the food,” Ms. Cowan said about the event. Stittsville Villa chef Neil Matte and his team prepared the food, all of which can be found on Villa menus

This event reveralicious also offered an opportunity for anyone interested to tour the facility and visit some of the suites that are available. There was also the opportunity to visit and sit and enjoy the Villa’s outdoor patio area, a secluded beauty spot that is loved by many residents for its serenity and beauty.

And what would any cruise be, whether on water or on Stittsville Main Street, without entertainment and so this reveralicious cruise at the Villa had the Mellow Tones band which filled the lounge area with melodies that were no doubt music in the best sense of the word for the seniors who filled every seat in the lounge and adjoining meeting area. Legion Concert Band has a busy month. Last Saturday, the Main and Abbott Dance Band performed at the Blackburn Hamlet Fun Fair. The Dance Band will be playing at the Relay For Life event on Friday, June 17 at Walter Baker Park in Kanata. On Saturday evening, June 18, the Concert Band and the Dance Band will both be performing at the Legion’s appreciation banquet. Band members not performing will be helping out by cooking, serving and cleaning up throughout the dinner, allowing the Legion members an opportunity to enjoy the event with someone else doing the tasks that they usually do. On Monday, June 27, the Concert Band will be performing at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre, bringing the joy of music to these folks who do not always have the opportunity to enjoy such a concert. Both the Concert Band and the Dance Band will be performing at the Canada Day celebration in Stittsville on July 1st on the grounds of Sacred Heart High School. On Tuesday, June 1, Joyce Reading had the ladies’ high score at the euchre party at the Legion Hall. Jackie Ralph was the runner-up for the ladies. Mike O’Connell had the men’s high score with Wayne Pilon placing second. Guy Lefebvre had the most lone hands while Garnet Vaughn had the hidden score. Eddie Legault had the low score. Door prizes were won by Peggy Manion and Dick Ross.

The darts season at the Stittsville Legion finished up with a banquet on Friday, May 27 that was right on target with a great meal provided by Judy Campbell and her crew, music by Terri Bennett and by Norm Fortin and a host of awards presented to the darters. This capped off what is considered the best dart season in recent memory. The team of Don Lennard, Lynn Chenier and Mary Durling took first place honours for the season, with the runner-up team being comprised of Jamie Navin, Doug Munroe, Sherry Lalonde and Pat Cashman. The runners-up turned out to be the champions of the playoffs while the first place team in the regular season finished as playoff runners-up. Jamie Navin was honoured as the most sportsmanlike player while Don Lennard had the high average for the men while Bev Currie topped the women. Mike Durling’s 145 was the high finish for the men while Ev-

elyn Fortin’s 146 was the women’s high finish. Fred Appel had 41 finishes, the most for the men, while Stacey Parker had 21 finishes to lead the women. Doreen Pasternack was the most improved darter with a 5.88 point increase in her average. Capital Dodge and Purewater both made donations for door prizes. Fun darts will be continuing every Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the downstairs lounge at the Legion Hall. This is a great opportunity to have some fun while meeting others from the community. The dart season starting this fall will take place on Thursday nights. Darts is open to everyone in the community, not just Legion members. Anyone interested in playing darts should sign up on the sigh up sheet at the Legion Hall. The season will be kicking off on Sept. 15. The focus of this darts league is for players to have fun and meet new people. That makes it great for people who want to try darts or who have not played for a while.

EDITORIAL

A corny idea? Villagefest has been a fixture in Stittsville for two decades now, starting in the early 1990’s as a celebration of the re-construction of Stittsville Main Street. For years, the Villagefest parade was a highlight of early fall in the village, rivaling in some respects the annual Richmond Fair parade, another of the area’s fall highlights. But Villagefest now has no parade and has been re-scheduled on the calendar for a couple of weeks earlier so that it happens before the Richmond Fair and Carp Fair at a time when the weather has a better chance of being good. It featured a scarecrow theme last September. It makes you wonder whether the Stittsville Village Association, which organizes the event,

should consider a revamp of Villagefest, revitalizing it so that it will once again play a major role in the village’s event entertainment calendar. And in looking for such a revamp, what about looking back and consider reviving a corn festival. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Goulbourn township hosted a corn festival which proved most popular but failed, largely because of costs associated with engaging top notch entertainment for the event. Entertainment should be no problem now, with so much youth talent in the community and the existence of such things as the Stittsville Concert Band. Even the existing Villagefest shows that engaging local entertainment for such an event is no

problem. Corn, we believe, remains a great draw for people. A mid-August corn festival staged at Village Square Park in Stittsville would feature, of course, freshly boiled corn on the cob. But there could be other attractions, all geared to the corn theme. What about a corny joke contest? What about a corn shucking contest? What about various games centred around corn such as corn miniature golf, corn horseshoes, a corn toss, etc. There could be a corn mascot, just like the former corn festival had. But, most of all, there could be lots of freshly boiled corn – what a way to enjoy the waning days of summer while looking forward to the advent of fall!

It’s not your grandfather’s NHL, Winnipeg Most people are pretty happy that Winnipeg has worked itself back into the National Hockey League. If there is a city where hockey belongs, Winnipeg is it. But amid the joyful voices are dire warnings. Winnipeg better sell out its arena every night, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman warns, or else. Winnipeg is too small, others say. No matter how much people love hockey in Winnipeg, there are not enough of them. Of course, we heard that lots in Ottawa when the Senators first began playing here almost 20 years ago. After the heady first couple of years, reality settled in. We had a losing team and people stopped going to see it. There were warnings then, some of them from the owner. People started going again, maybe because of the threats, but probably because the team began winning. When the team wins, the fans come. It’s a formula that works just about everywhere. When the team wins, other

CHARLES GORDON good things follow. Merchandise sold better. Corporate sponsors were easier to attract. The Senators began appearing on television more often, a helpful thing for the revenue stream. All of that can happen in Winnipeg, which is about the same size as Ottawa, although there is a smaller population base to draw upon in the surrounding area. It will be great if it works in Winnipeg, if only to discredit the assumption that pro sports, and particularly hockey, have been working on for many years. That assumption is that population is more important than fan interest in determining a team’s future. Following that reasoning, the NHL expanded into a number of cities in which there was no interest in hockey but were really large.

One of those cities is Atlanta, which has now lost its second franchise in 30 years (don’t forget the Flames, which moved to Calgary in the ‘80s.) The success of the new Winnipeg team will disprove the theory that hockey has become too big to survive in mediumsized cities. Sure, it is big. The salaries are huge, and so are other costs. To pay them the teams set ticket prices discouragingly high. Can people in Winnipeg pay them? Apparently people in Ottawa can, although another losing season would be an interesting test. Those ticket prices are high. One report says that Winnipeg will have to charge an average of $80. Did you ever notice that if you tell someone you went to a Senators game, the question is inevitably: “Did you pay for your ticket?” It is always assumed that no one would go to the game unless they got a freebie somehow. Is everything getting too big? Look at all the people who are

staying home, watching stuff on giant living room screens, rather than supporting the arts or their team. Stores are too big and too remote. The small one in your neighbourhood is gone. You have to get into your car to get to the large one. There are reports of a big cinema complex that will go into Lansdowne Park, causing smaller ones to be closed. So it goes. Even the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, which has always operated on a reasonable scale, has become too big. In order to attract enough paying customers to keep the festival going on its present scale, the festival has to abandon jazz on its main stage in prime time. If it works,

Returning to smaller times, is not an option, experts say. If the jazz festival goes small, it loses corporate and government sponsorship. If a neighbourhood bookstore stays small, people who want to buy knickknacks and scented candles won’t go there. Apparently a bookstore that doesn’t sell scented candles goes out of business. The odds are that pro hockey is never going back to the days of affordable salaries and affordable tickets. Welcome back to the NHL, Winnipeg. Think about winning.

The goal is to build an amphitheatre as an outdoor classroom and play centre for students. So it is only natural that one way of raising funds for this new facility is to have a fundraising activity day for the students, fittingly called a Play-A-Thon. Why not have fun while raising funds! And that’s just what happened at Holy Spirit Catholic School in Stittsville on Tuesday, May 31. Students collected pledges or donations to help with the fundraising effort for the new outdoor classroom/amphitheatre as well as two new playground structures. These pledges allowed the students to play, jump, run and just basically have fun while taking part in a number of play activities in the schoolyard and gym. Youngsters got to use their muscles in these activities which included soccer, skipping and more. Since the school lost its play structure back in 2006 as it was deemed unsafe due to its wooden construction, Holy Spirit students have resorted to creative play in the schoolyard but there is a yearning for playground equipment. Hence this initiative to create an outdoor classroom/ amphitheatre and new playground structures. The plan is to have age appropriate structures for two different age groups since the school, as a kindergarten to grade six school, has both younger and older students. This Play-A-Thon fundraiser was organized by the Holy Spirit School Yard Improvement Committee along with teachers Mrs. Cuglietta, Ms. Booren and Mrs. Gorrie. The parent group was established in 2009 with a mission to improve the school yard experience for students at the school, as well as those living in the surrounding communities. The primary objective is to improve the yard’s green space to encourage more green learning, creative play and physical activity for the students and those in the nearby neighbourhoods who visit the school yard on evenings and weekends. After attending workshops presented by Evergreen last year and doing appropriate research including John Brummell photo student, parent and Holy Spirit Catholic School student Brendon teacher surveys, it Castrucci skips as he participates in the was determined that fundraising Play-A-Thon at the school in green space in the Stittsville on Tuesday, May 31.

school yard is most valued while also encouraging a healthy play and learning environment. The goal is to grow, maintain and encourage the yard’s green space. At present the school yard is a mixture of asphalt, grass with a bench and picnic tables and trees. The school yard does have a treed area featuring mostly mature cedars. Behind the school property is a city owned treed area with a pathway and Poole Creek. Last year a group of parents and students from the school and community spent hours cleaning up the city owned area behind the school, picking up debris and improving the treed area and stream. The group also held a cake walk fundraiser to raise funds for the purchase, delivery and spreading of 40 cubic yards of cedar mulch to improve the health of the trees in the school’s forested cedar area. The group has also purchased soccer nets to improve the soccer experience of the students, so many of whom love to play soccer. Ten trees were planted in the school yard about four years ago and another ten trees are being planted this year thanks to the city of Ottawa’s tree program. At the recent Education Week at the school, a cake parade was held, another success, not only providing lots of fun but also raising over $1,200 for the school yard greening and improvement projects. Parents who are serving on the Holy Spirit School Yard Improvement Committee are Marianne Laver, Jennifer Low, Christine Pristanski, Jennifer Carroll and Patricia Major.

Year-end dance show at South Carleton High School JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Dancing is hot these days. There’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” the American dance competition and reality TV show that first aired in 2005 with over ten million viewers and continues, albeit with a somewhat smaller viewership. And what about “Dancing With The Stars,” another dance-focussed realtiy TV show which pairs a celebrity with a professional dancer. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg in today’s world of dance.

So it is not surprising that 179 pairs of feet took to the stage at South Carleton High School recently for the annual yearend dance show at the school, featuring the dance efforts of students from grade 9 to grade 12 in the dance program at the school. This year’s show was “A Tribute to Madonna,” the American recording artist and actress who has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and is recognized as the world’s top selling female recording artist of all time. The dance show featured 30 different routines, from the opening “Harder to

Breathe” contemporary dance number by grade 12 students through the “Black and Gold” tap routine by grade ten students to the grand finale involving all of the dancers. These dance routines ranged from contemporary to hip hop to jazz to lyric to tap. Something for everyone! Included in the routines were a duet “Breathing” by Rebecca Graziano and Robbie McInnes and solos by Cara Mulvagh (“Liar”) and Emily Fry (“Clocks”). A grade ten hip hop number, “The Nikki Mix,” was choreographed by Jessica Sharma while the grade 12 dancers choreographed several routines including

“Hometown,” “Jersey Shore,” “Faceless” and “Heavy in Your Arms.” South Carleton teachers of dance are Stacey Hamilton and Leslie Jaeggin. They were assisted in this production by peer teachers Jessica Sharma and Lauren Willing. The production always benefits from the efforts of a number of parents who sew and help out in other ways. This year’s “Sewing and Helping Moms” were Karen Brown, Frances Hillsdon, Alison Buckley, Jody Layer, Trish Cohan, Carol MacDonald, Lisa Goudie and Diana Rogers.

‘Dance 4 Diabetes’ raises $4,000 for JDRF JOHN CURRY

john.curry@metroland.com

She came. She taught. She danced. In the end, the visit by former New York City Ballet ballerina and author Zippora Karz was a highlight and great lead-in for the “Dance 4 Diabetes” fundraiser that followed her master class with about 50 students at the Canadian School of Dance in Barrhaven on Saturday evening, June 4. This is where 12 year old Hannah Hempinstall of Richmond takes dance lessons and where she organized her sixth “Dance 4 Diabetes” fundraising event in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The three hours danceathon rocked to the music provided by Jeff Goldberg of Sonic Events of Toronto, who donated his time, work and travel costs for the event. In the end, $4,000 was raised, which brings the total raised by the “Dance 4 Diabetes” events organized by Hannah to over $18,000. At this “Dance 4 Diabetes” at the Canadian School of Dance, about $1,000 worth of door prizes donated by A&W, Tim Hortons, Lululemon and others and collected by Hannah were given away. A special guest at the event was city of Ottawa Rideau-Goulbourn ward councillor Scott Moffatt who made a generous donation, although he did not do any dancing.

This “Dance 4 Diabetes” event at the Canadian School of Dance was so successful that plans are being made to hold it again next year. Zippora Karz was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 21 years old. She has since written “The Sugarless Plum,” a book that deals with overcoming the hurdles associated with diabetes such as insulin shots, blood sugar management, diet, exercise and the psychological impact of having the disease. She flew in all the way from California to attend the event and lead a master class, passing on some tips to the ballet students in attendance. Over the past three years, Hannah Hempinstall has run “Dance 4 Diabetes” events at both Richmond Public School and Goulbourn Middle School. It all began when Hannah’s best friend was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and Hannah, to support her friend, promised to keep raising funds until a cure for diabetes is found. Little did Hannah know in 2008 when she made this promise that her mother, Nancy, would be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last December. All funds raised at the “Dance 4 Diabetes” events including the one at the Canadian School of Dance in Barrhaven are going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help in the fight against diabetes.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Hospice palliative care will be playing a key role in the future of health care in the Ottawa area in the view of Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) chief executive officer Alex Munter. “You are the future of health care,” he told those at the annual meeting of Friends of Hospice Ottawa (FOHO) on Thursday, June 2, telling the organization that it represents what health care should become. And in his view, what health care has to become is a system that better meets the needs of both seniors and youth. He says that while there is still a need for a health system that handles acute interventions via hospitals, there must be changes for more chronic disease management and encouragement of independence for seniors. He noted that palliative care such as that offered by FOHO which supports people in their homes is part of the solution, citing the fact that currently, while 98 percent of people say they want to spend their final days at home, only 15 percent of people actually get to do so. “You folks have come along

at just the right time,” he told those at the FOHO annual meeting, adding that the LHIN has endorsed a regional palliative care program as part of the transformation that needs to happen in the health system. Mr. Munter observed that the health care system was developed in the 1960’s and 1970’s based on the premise of quick medical intervention. However, such a system does not meet the needs of the aging who may need some help managing a chronic condition but not acute intervention. He cited the statistic that 80 percent of people over the age of 45 have at least one chronic condition but that a system based on acute intervention does not meet their needs. He said that supporting the health and independence of seniors is an issue that literally crosses his desk every day, adding that it is the “dominant issue I deal with.” Mr. Munter expressed the view that the impact of the baby boom generation will bring about these required changes in the health care system. “I think we are well positioned to make change,” he said. He said that too many people

right now are ending their days in hospital which he said is not where they want to be in their final days and also is not the best use of hospital space. He said that he recognizes that there is a need for more hospice beds in the area and admitted that there are challenges in making changes in the health care system but also expressed the view that the change will happen. Beth Ada of Stittsville, who has been chair of FOHO’s Board of Directors, is stepping down as chair although she will be remaining on the Board. She received a standing ovation from those in attendance at the annual meeting when she was thanked for her leadership efforts over the years by Chris Warburton who will be the new chair. Those on the FOHO Board of Directors besides Ms. Ada and Mr. Warburton are Alice Retik, Lynn Thompson, Farag Youssef, Kathleen Sterling, Frank Argue, John Curry, John Laframboise, Gerry Larkin and Linda Schumacher. Kathy Logsdail-Downer is the executive director of FOHO. Friends of Hospice Ottawa offers a number of services, all

without charge to clients, in the western area of the city of Ottawa. These include in-home volunteer support; two day hospices, one of which is at the St. John Anglican Church hall in Richmond; caregiver support; transportation of clients to and from appointments and essen-

tial living activities; telephone and walk-in information and referrals; bereavement support; and community education, specifically a volunteer education program to train volunteers how to work one-on-one with a client who is suffering from a life-threatening illness.

NEW HOMES

472264

CAPITAL REGION

Out with the cold – In with the hue

(NC)—With the warm days of summer upon us, it is the perfect time to inject vibrant colours into our homes to lift our spirits and make them as warm and inviting as the weather. And luckily, with just a few minor updates you can create a major impact on the décor (and enjoyment) of your home.

has your patio furniture seen better days? If the sun and snow have taken a toll on your outdoor seating, look no further than a can of spray paint to update the look. No matter if you’ve got rusty metal, weathered wood or dingy plastic, you can turn trash into treasure in no time.

NEW HUE IN THE LOO

Krylon’s Fusion for Plastic paint is available in dozens of colours to bring everything from seating to decorative accents back to life. For wood materials, try Krylon’s outdoor spray stain, and to cover rust on metal – or to prevent it in the future – Krylon’s Outdoor Spaces has the colour and finish to suit any décor needs.

The powder room is a space you use every day – and that guests also view. For this small space, test out a new bold colour that you may not be as daring to use in other larger areas. According to industry experts, green is one of the most popular hues in the bathroom this year. Splash the walls with a coat of paint in a vibrant shade. Or simply update your decorative accents throughout the room with contrasting colours to make a beautiful design statement. FRESHEN UP FURNITURE

“Spray painting is a simple project that even a novice DIYer can feel comfortable doing,” said Katherine Merkle, Krylon brand manager. “With just a bit of prep work and a quality product, your project will be the envy of your neighbours in no time.”

AMAZING ACCENTS If you’ve grown tired of the colour scheme in your living areas or bedroom, updating fabric accents can make a dramatic change to your rooms for years to come… or simply for the season. To brighten chairs, loveseats and couches add new decorative throw pillows or drape a new blanket over the back. In the bedroom, a new comforter can add new style (and comfort) to the room. Plus, these accents can be quite affordable and are easily changeable when you’re ready for a new hue. With a few simple updates, your home’s style (and your mood) can be elevated with new bright colours. More information can be found online at www.projectsinacan.com. www.newscanada.com

Health, yes. Drugs, no. And the new Yates Naturopathic Clinic and Wellness Centre on Carp Road just north of Hazeldean Road in Stittsville achieves this not only by treating the underlying causes of poor health and body pain but also in assembling under one roof every service that can contribute to a holistic but natural approach to treatment. That’s why the Yates Naturopathic Clinic and Wellness Centre not only focuses on naturopathic treatment thanks to Dr. Seth Yates’ studies with the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine but also provides acupuncture, physiotherapy massage, hydro therapy and personal training including yoga and a unique boot camp. Throw in nutrition and Dr. Yates’ studies in kinesiology from the University of Western Ontario and you have all the ingredients necessary to create an in-depth balanced health program for every patient, a program geared to get the best results possible. When naturopathic medicine combines with physiotherapy, nutrition and personal training, optimal health and fitness can be achieved. And Dr. Yates’ new Carp Road facility offers all this not only under one roof but in a coordinated, planned way, aimed at success. The Yates Naturopathic Clinic and Wellness Centre opened on Carp Road last February, relocating from Kanata where Dr. Yates had been located for two and a half years. The new premises, once renovated, provided the additional space that Dr. Yates needed so that he could implement more therapies on site and offer the complete array of services and treatments required to provide the best in treatment for patients. Already, business has increased, an increase which Dr. Yates attributes largely to enhanced exposure thanks to being located on a busy roadway with a noticeable sign. “I’m a huge fan of exercise,” Dr. Yates says. His boot camp located in the rear yard of the clinic features a unique approach to make the circuit appropriate for everyone. Each area of the circuit is tiered with three different options, so that there is one level of exercise that is appropriate for everyone. Someone can sign up for the boot camp program but Dr. Yates also offers pre-assessments in which he tests every muscle and then determines what is needed for a patient to achieve proper muscular balance. A lot of people are getting tired of taking pills and instead want to fix the underlying cause of a malady, Dr. Yates explains. “I’m not a big fan of drugs,” he says, feeling that they are just band-aids to curing the real problem. In his treatments, he uses a lot of herbs as well as acupuncture, depending on what the situation calls for. He acknowledges that some herb remedies including teas do not taste that great. Indeed, he admits that some

herbs taste downright bad, which is why in these cases a patient usually only has to deal with a quick teaspoon of the herb. But Dr. Yates defends his use of herbs. “I make what works, not what tastes good,” he says in explaining how he assembles a herb preparation for a patient. He notes that many herb therapies are thousands of years old. A secret to treatment is to understand that a herb can have up to 150 active ingredients in it and knowledge is required to know which herbs to use to combine into a successful herb formula for a patient. “You have to know how to use herbs appropriately,” Dr. Yates says. Herbal medicine works, he says – you just have to know how to use it properly. Dr. Yates is familiar with acupuncture as practiced in Japan, China and France. Ear acupuncture is effective, he finds, in reducing neck and back pain and also in reducing the urge to smoke. Dr. Yates praises Carol Banens, the registered physiotherapist who is part of his team at the Yates Naturopathic Clinic and Wellness Centre. She is very experienced and excellent with back pain, he says. He admits that many people have muscle pain, a fact that he attributes to having to sit eight hours a day in front of a computer, something that he claims is not natural for the body. Counteracting the impact of such behaviour can involve acupuncture, massage and exercise.

Dr. Yates says that his treatments have resulted in improvements for cancer patients, mainly related to tumour size, pain and nausea and often decreasing the side effects from chemotherapy treatments. He has developed many diet and nutrition plans for cancer patients. “My goal is to make things as optimal for the patient in that situation as possible,” he says. No referrals are required to attend the Yates Naturopathic Clinic and Wellness Centre and its services are covered under most health plans. Dr. Yates works with many patients who are suffering from a chronic disease. He has also had success treating children’s ear aches and those suffering from type 2 diabetes. He notes that his hormone balance treatment helps reduce “hot flashes” for women. Just how successful has he been in this? “I am probably batting 1000 percent,” he says. The Yates Naturopathic Clinic and Wellness Centre on Carp Road is holding an open house on Saturday, June 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be free yoga and boot camp sessions. All of the treatment rooms such as the rooms used for hydro therapy and detoxification will be open for viewing and touring at this open house. Dr. Yates and his team will be on hand to answer any questions and to discuss their philosophy of health and treatment with everyone who visits. Everyone is welcome to drop in. The Yates Naturopathic Clinic and Wellness Centre can be contacted at 613-878-7384 or via email at YatesNaturopathic@gmail.com.

Telus Mobility is expanding and has plans to install a new monopole tower, but I want to hear from the community regarding its installation, concerns about the monopole and opinions surrounding its use and effect. I have set up a meeting to take place on Tuesday June 14th 2011 from 7pm until 9pm at the Stittsville & District Community Centre- Upstairs Hall. The Stittsville Village Association and I have both recommended that there be further input from the community in order to ensure that area resident’s concerns are fully considered regarding the installation of a Telus Mobility Monopole. Telus will follow the notification procedure from Industry Canada which is to notify all property owners within three pole lengths of the tower site. Also, Telus has a signed lease agreement with CDS Group of Companies to locate the monopole on its land, provided this site meets with city and Federal requirements. I would still appreciate hearing from you on the matter so please come out to the meeting and share your thoughts. Shad’s Park Party! As mentioned in my previous column, my annual Park Party and BBQ will be held this Saturday, June 11th from 12pm-4pm at Village Park, located on Abbot Street at the corner of Stittsville Main Street. Here’s an update on some of the activities being offered. There will be face painting, a bounce castle, tug of war, a colouring station, parachute game, chalk station as well as Nintendo Wii Rockband set up under a tent. A hockey card trading table for kids under 6 (must be accompanied by an adult) will also be set up so bring your hockey cards! Members from the local emergency and health departments will be offering services and educational material for families.

I would like to provide some information about residential occupancy permits as Stittsville is growing quite fast and some people may be unaware of what these are, what they provide and what they do not provide. What is an Occupancy Permit issued by the city?

An occupancy permit attests to the general conformance of the new construction with the Ontario Building Code based on the inspections undertaken as required by the Building Code and the Building By-Law. An occupancy permit does not certify or warrant the work or workmanship of a builder, only general conformance with the Building Code.

WANT A WHITER SMILE?

For the City, it confirms that the minimum requirements for occupancy as set out in the Building Code have been met and that all inspections have passed. For the legal representatives acting on behalf of a purchaser of a home, it is a tool for assessing the status of the building/ property being transferred. For the property owner, it

confirms that any identified Building Code deficiencies noted during any of the scheduled inspections by a Building Official, have been resolved. When is it issued? A “Partial-Occupancy Permit” is issued at the request of the building permit holder and where the minimum occupancy requirements set out in the Code have been met. For example: the “minimum occupancy requirements” for a single-family residence include: Required exits, handrails and guards, fire alarm and detection systems, and fire separations must be complete, operational and inspected. Water supply, sewage disposal, lighting and heating systems must be complete and operational. Building water systems, building drains, building sewers, and drainage and venting systems must be complete, operational, inspected and tested. A Final Occupancy Permit is issued when construction is complete and all outstanding Code deficiencies, as listed in Inspection Reports, have been addressed. The Building Code relates only to minimum standards for health, safety and structural sufficiency of the building itself. The Code does not impose standards for the electrical system, the gas services (which are regulated by other provincial agencies), nor the landscaping of the yard. Thus if the buyer wishes to obtain further assurances that the building systems are in proper order, they would have to do so at their own expense. Buyers are encouraged to research their potential purchases as much as possible before signing on the dotted line. Buyers should request a copy of the Occupancy Permits as a condition of sale. Also, buyers may request their legal representative obtain a compliance report from the City, particularly if the building is not a new building. Buying a house continues to be a “Buyer Beware” transaction. New Branch Service Medals awarded at Richmond Legion JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Five Richmond Legion members received a new award at the annual charter night dinner and honours and awards night on Saturday, June 4 at the Richmond Legion Hall. This new Branch Service Medal is to be awarded to members of the Branch to recognize significant work accomplished by Legion members outside of

or prior to their acceptance of leadership positions. The first Richmond Legion members to receive this new medal are James Becking, Roger Bourgeois, Edna Monahan, Wendy Ryan and Sheldon Spearman. The presentation of these new service medals was a highlight of the evening which also featured the presentation of a number of awards, certificates and service pins.

Certificates of appreciation went to John Villeneuve, Tom Louks and the Munster Elementary School while certificates of merit were presented to Club 55, the accounting firm of Collins Barrow (auditors for the branch’s poppy fund) and Elizabeth Douville. Ten year service pins were presented to affiliate voting members Jim Gleason and Catherine Wytenburg while ten year service pins were presented to associate members Sandra Carter, Eunice Lemyre and

Wendy Ryan. Ordinary members Jack Lemyre and Nancy Simpson also received ten year service pins. Rachel Senechal, an associate member, received a 15 year service pin while 20 year service pins went to associate members Joanne Hepton, Millie Kennedy and Mary Murphy. Associate member Robert Lawless received a 30 year service pin. Ordinary members who received 20 year service pins were Oscar Clench, Ross Duncan and John Kennedy while Patrick

Sullivan received a 30 year service pin. Thirty five year service pins went to Ross Caiger-Watson, Robert Ranger and Alton Gilhuly. The Richmond Branch 625 of the Royal Canadian Legion received its charter from the Royal Canadian Legion in 1973. In 1976, the branch purchased land on the Ottawa Street extension in Richmond, with the hall’s construction beginning in 1980. The hall opened in 1981, 30 years ago.

Life membership JOHN CURRY

john.curry@metroland.com

A standing ovation greeted Oscar Clench as he received a Royal Canadian Legion life membership at the Richmond Legion’s annual charter night dinner and honours and awards night on Saturday, June 4. “It is members like Oscar who provide the ‘behind the scenes’ support that enables small branches such as ours to carry on,” Legion past president and awards night MC Jane Louks said in announcing the awarding of the Legion life membership to Mr. Clench. In accepting the honour, Mr. Clench said that he was sure that there were many others who deserved the award more than he did. But these might be hard to find, considering the contribution that Mr. Clench has made to the Richmond Legion Branch over the 20 years that he has been

a member. He has served as the sergeant-at-arms from 1999 to 2003 as well as a term as second vice-president in 2001-2002. Mr. Clench has been a member of the Legion’s colour party for nearly 20 years, participating in Remembrance Day parades and ceremonies as well as other commemorative ceremonies. But more than this, Mr. Clench has been an avid and regular worker for the Legion, always available to help in any way that he can. He regularly assists at the Legion’s summer BBQ’s and is one of those who is always available for setting up the hall for special events and helping out in the kitchen during catering events.

The Richmond Branch 625 of the Royal Canadian Legion must feel like it is Christmas when its annual charter night dinner and honours and awards night happens each June. That’s because it has become a tradition that both the Ladies’ Auxiliary and the Legion’s Club 55 use the occasion to give substantial donations to the Branch. This year’s event, which took place on Saturday, June 4, was no different. Club 55 president Jane Louks, on behalf of the Club, presented Legion president Brian Goss with a cheque for $1,500 as a donation from the Club to help out the Legion Branch. The Ladies’ Auxiliary followed this up with L.A. president Shirley Beardsell presenting the Branch with a donation of $1,000 from the L.A.

Mike Clarkson takes over at SMHA SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

The Stittsville Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) has a new acting president. Lynda Partner, who had recently been elected acting president to replace acting president Glenn Austin who is the new president of the Lanark Carleton Minor Hockey League, has had to resign both as acting president and as vice-president of support services. This is due to a motion passed at the recent District 4 annual general meeting that prevents anyone who

does not live in Stittsville from serving on the SMHA executive. Lynda has been involved with the SMHA executive for the past five years. SMHA has an acting president pending the return of president Craig Goodwin who was suspended by District 4 last season. Taking over as SMHA acting president is Mike Clarkson. He is a veteran volunteer with SMHA, having been involved with its management council for a number of years.

The proposed roundabout for the intersection of Shea Road and Fernbank Road is getting

Here comes estate lots JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

A proposed 77-lot estate lot development in Goulbourn extending from the Flewellyn Road north to the Fernbank Road east of Dwyer Hill Road is coming closer to reality. Ottawa city council’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee has given its approval to re-designating a nearly exhausted gravel pit to a general rural designation so that the second phase of the estate lot development will be able to occupy the site. A greater concern was whether this subdivision would adversely impact the potential for a future quarry in a Limestone Resource Area on the west side of Dwyer Hill Road opposite this proposed subdivision site. Usually a 500 metre buffer is required between such a Limestone Resource Area and residential development. There would be 25 lots of the new subdivision that would be within this 500 metre buffer area. However, it is felt that implementing setbacks and buffering through the zoning and subdivision approvals processes that are coming will ensure that the residential uses will not preclude the future creation of a quarry. City staff feels that any potential to hinder a future quarry operation on the west side of Dwyer Hill Road would be limited to noise which is resolvable through setbacks and buffering dictated in the subdivision process. Through these measures, as well as taking into account required site setbacks, berms and screening for any future quarry, the total effect will be that no new house within the proposed estate lot subdivision will be within 420 metres of any future quarry. The proposed estate lot subdivision will be developed in two phases. The first phase will be accessed off Flewellyn Road, consisting of 40 lots on five streets. Phase two of the subdivision would extend the subdivision out to Fernbank Road, consisting of 37 lots on three streets. It is this second phase that has the lots that would be closest to any future quarry on the west side of Dwyer Hill Road. This proposed estate lot subdivision was submitted to the city of Ottawa on Dec. 9, 2009, just before a moratorium on country estate lot developments came into effect.

Shopping centre in Richmond LAURA MUELLER laura.mueller@metroland.com

A new shopping centre will be popping up in Richmond, perhaps as early as next year. Colonnade Developments received zoning approval for a 7,153-square metre shopping complex located at the corner of Perth Street and Shea Road at the June 2 meeting of Ottawa city council’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee on Thursday, June 2. The corner location will become a “gateway” into the community, said Rideau-Goulbourn Coun. Scott Moffatt. Moffatt said most area residents will welcome more shopping options. “There is a lack of commercial development in the village and a lack of places for people to shop,” said Moffatt, who supports the development. Residents “aren’t too fond” of

the existing aging shopping area in the village and new options will breath new life into Richmond, Moffatt said. The shopping centre will be a “little-box mall,” quipped Moffat, as opposed to the “big-box” centres that contain stores such as Wal-Mart. Murray Chown, a planning consultant for the project, said the developer will now begin to find tenants for the stores, but none are confirmed yet. Moffatt said the shopping centre would be an ideal location for businesses like coffee shops, a bank and a liquor store. The developer will have to confirm sufficient sewer capacity before building can begin. The City of Ottawa is in talks with Richmond developers to establish a fund to provide money for upgrades to the Richmond pumping station and forced main. That sewer is needed before development can occur.

The final design for the roundabout and Shea Road realignment will be done by spring of 2012, with construction of the project to take place later in 2012. This project came about as a result of traffic problems at the intersection of Fernbank Road and Shea Road, specifically where Shea Road coming from the north hits Fernbank Road. It has been confirmed that southbound vehicles on Shea Road turning left onto Fernbank Road are excessively delayed during peak periods. This fact, along with the fact that traffic conditions now satisfy the city of Ottawa’s minimum criteria for installation of traffic control measures at the intersection, resulted in the retention of the Delcan consulting firm to investigate the situa-

tion and to determine the most appropriate form of traffic control for the intersection. Delcan evaluated two methods of traffic control for the intersection – a traditional traffic control signal and a roundabout. Both alternatives were found to be suitable ways of addressing the traffic conditions at this intersection as well as to be able to handle the traffic generated by future growth. It was determined that the roundabout was the preferred alternative as it would provide the performance and safety required while it also has lower construction and operating costs compared to a traffic control signal. To accommodate the roundabout, Shea Road north of Fernbank Road has to be realigned,

namely by swinging eastward under the high voltage hydro line so that it will line up directly with Shea Road south of Fernbank Road when it hits Fernbank Road. Statistics at the open house reveal that there were ten collisions over the course of five years (2004-2009) at Shea Road and Fernbank Road where the northern portion of Shea Road hits Fernbank Road. There was just one collision in the time period 2005 to 2009 where Shea Road from the south hits Fernbank Road. The roundabout, as proposed, with have its circular central island outlined with paving stones, with the interior area landscaped. Concrete curbs will be installed at each of the exterior four concerns of the intersection.

Walking and golfing to raise funds for JDRF

JOHN CURRY

john.curry@metroland.com

Until the Labour Day weekend in 2009, young Justin Moorhouse of Richmond was enjoying life, your typical youngster. He played minor hockey, went to school and was a racing car enthusiast. But while camping with his family that Labour Day weekend, he became dehydrated and his family had to rush him to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). Something was not right and the fact that he had not been feeling all that well for the past three months now suddenly seemed more relevant. It did not take doctors long to assess his situation – he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Yes, it can happen that suddenly, at no particular age and with no genetic family history of the disease. Type 1 diabetes means that the pancreas has shut down and is no longer functioning and producing insulin for the body. Type 2 diabetes means that the pancreas is still functioning but the body can no longer handle the insulin being produced naturally. Justin’s diagnosis of type 1 diabetes meant some changes in his life, although he continues to play minor hockey, even though he is the only Richmond Munster Minor Hockey Association player suffering from type 1 diabetes. Of course, when he plays, it means continually being aware of his condition and ensuring that his blood sugar levels stay consistent. The ten year old has found, in the two seasons that he has now played hockey with his diabetes, that he tends to get tired toward the end of some games. “I try to get my most effort into the first and second periods,” he says in explaining how he tries to handle the impact of his condition on his hockey playing. He loves the game and has ever since he first took it up at age four after watching his brother, who is four years older, play. He meets new friends through his hockey and he feels that he has some talent for the game. He scored three goals this past season and is strong around the goal at both ends of the rink. A grade four student at St. Philip Catholic School in Richmond, Justin

now tests his blood at every lunch hour. His mother, Laura, did go to the school at every lunch hour for several months but now Justin handles the testing himself and simply phones his mother to let her know that it is done. Justin also now has to wear glasses to see the board at school as his eyesight was suddenly affected by his diabetes. Justin and his family had quite a crash course in how to deal with type 1 diabetes following his diagnosis in Sept. 2009. This involved attending seminars at CHEO to learn about the disease and how to treat it. Justin and the whole family have had to learn about how to test his blood four times a day, how to administer insulin and how to regulate his diet so that his blood sugar level does not become either too high or too low. This means knowing how to give needles and all about different foods – those that contain the carbohydrates that create sugar in the body and those that do not. How well Justin with the help of his family handles his diabetes now will minimize any future complications from the disease, perhaps in 20 years’ time, such as cataracts or circulation and heart problems. Justin may soon be outfitted with a pump, a device that he will be fitted with that will control his sugar levels. In the long run, given the research that is now going on with regard to diabetes, Justin may see a cure for the disease in the form of an artificial pancreas. The research is not yet there but it may happen in Justin’s lifetime. And, indeed, the research is being helped by Justin and his family. Last year, the family all walked in the Telus Walk To Cure Diabetes, participating under the banner of the banner of Jason’s Marauders – Jason being his cousin who is also a diabetes sufferer. This year Justin and his family, along with his cousin and the extended family, will be participating in the Telus Walk To Cure diabetes at Queen Juliana Park opposite the Dow’s Lake Pavilion in Ottawa this Sunday, June 12, raising funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). So far, Jason’s and Justin’s Maraun-

Munster yard sale

ders is one of the top fundraising teams for this walk, with over $8,000 raised to date. But this is not all that Justin and his family are doing to raise funds to battle diabetes. The whole Moorhouse family had begun golfing as a family at the Rideau Glen Golf Club at the Rideau River near Kemptville. Given this family interest in golf, it did not take long before the idea of a fundraising golf tournament took hold. That’s why there is going to be Justin’s Charity Golf Classic For Type 1 Diabetes held at the new eQuinelle Golf Club near Kemptville (almost right across the road from the Rideau Glen Golf Club) on Monday, June 27. The goal is to raise $5,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation but more golfers are still needed to ensure a full shotgun-start field of 144 golfers. The tournament will include a round of golf and cart, lunch, dinner, prizes, a raffle table and various contests such as longest drive, straightest drive and closest to the pin. Cost is $150 per golfer or $500 for a foursome. People can also at-

tend only the dinner at a cost of $30. All payments should be made by this Sunday, June 12. For information and registration for this golf tournament, call 613-838-3388 or 613-204-1912 or email GOLFFORJUSTIN@yahoo.ca. More information can also be found at www.golfforjustin.webs. com. So, the Moorhouse family has come a long way since that Labour Day weekend in 2009 when Justin first was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The family has learned about the disease together, has been side by side with Justin as he combats the disease and now is working together to raise funds to help find a cure for the disease. As Justin’s mother Laura says, since 2009 the family has learned a lot about diabetes. But she is also quick to point out that while having diabetes requires care and treatment, there are a lot worse things that could happen medically in the life of a child like Justin. Tyke 1 diabetes is controllable and allows a person to live much a normal life. The same cannot be said for some other life threatening diseases that a child could contract.

Car wash for Jessica McCoy SPECIAL TO THE NEWS A car wash, once delayed by rain but then held under sunny skies, is supporting the family of Jessica McCoy, the young Munster girl who is battling cancer. The car wash had originally been scheduled for Saturday, May 14 but rain caused its postponement. However, it went ahead on the following Saturday, May 21, when the sunshine resulted in a great response and the enthusiastic teams of young volunteers did a shining job on all of the vehicles at the event. The residents of the Richmond Lodge, sponsors of the event, had originally planned to give half of the proceeds from the car wash to the family of Jessica McCoy for support during the difficult time that the family is now undergoing. However, the residents have decided to contribute the total proceeds raised at the car wash, over $375, to the McCoy family, along with their prayers and well wishes, all in memory of their own loved ones. The Lodge residents wish to thank all who supported the car wash.

What a way to celebrate the Feast of St. John the Baptist – great food, marvelous company and reasonable prices! And it is all happening at the annual BBQ at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in Richmond on Friday, June 24. The BBQ will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with everyone welcome. There will be steak available as well as hamburger or veggie platters or hot dog platters. In addition, there will be some awesome salads and strawberries and ice cream for dessert. And the prices – well, you can’t beat $14 for steak, $8 for the hamburger or veggie platter and $6 for the hot dog platter. To pre-purchase tickets, please contact Jean Langman at 613489-3431 or call the church office at 613-838-9643. St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in Richmond is the first church established in Carleton County and is marked as such

with a provincial historical plaque. The original church was begun in 1823 and was consecrated in 1838. It was later replaced in 1860 with the present building. The cornerstone for the original church building was laid on St. John the Baptist’s feast day on June 24, 1823. It is believed that this is how the name of the church originated. St. John the Baptist was an itinerant preacher and major religious figure at the time of Christ. He led a movement of baptism in the Jordan River. Most biblical historians agree that St. John baptized Jesus in the Jordan, having recognized Jesus as the Messiah. This baptism marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. He died when he was beheaded by Herod at the request of his stepdaughter Salome. St. John the Baptist is the patron saint of French Canada as well as Newfoundland, Puerto Rico, Jordan and a number of other places.

Goulbourn Skating Club elects executive, hears president’s report JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Kevin Timmins is continuing as president of the Goulbourn Skating Club for the upcoming season. Others returning to the new 2011-2012 executive include Helen Gunther as secretary, Adrienne Noble as treasurer and Carole Lefebvre Johnson as immediate past president. Elected as directors for the coming year are Laura Laplante for publicity, Leigh Pritchard as test chair, Alison Halket for fundraising, Megan Sands for Canskate and Jennifer Fryer as a general director. Theresa Kelly will represent the coaches on the executive while Sarah Wammes

will be the coach Canskate program coordinator. Carole Lefebvre Johnson will also serve as the Club’s delegate to Skate Canada. Positions still to be filled as director of special events, director of skater development and director at large. In his president’s report delivered at the Goulbourn Skating Club’s recent annual general meeting, Club president Kevin Timmins noted that the club saw a modest overall increased enrolment in most of its programs in the 2010-2011 season. The club’s overall Skate Canada registered members grew from 544 in the 2009-2010 season to 648 in the 2010-2011 season.

The Canpower program grew by more than 80 members, largely due to an expansion initiated with the West Ottawa Ringette Association. Last April the Club introduced a Special Olympic Program with 14 or more skaters taking to the ice during the Club’s four week spring session. This program is going to be reviewed with the hope of rolling out a full Special Olympic Program this coming fall. This coming year a synchronized skating program may also implemented to introduce skaters to the world of synchronized skating. The club had suspended its synchronized skating program in the fall of 2008 but increasing interest may see its return.

Through a tender process with the city of Ottawa, the Club was awarded office space at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex, meaning that the Club office was moved from the Stittsville District Community Centre and relocated in the northwest corner of the GRC arena. Due to unforeseen delays, the office was not actively open this past season but this will be the goal in the upcoming season. This past season saw the Goulbourn Skating Club hosted the Skate Canada Eastern Ontario Regional Invitational Special Olympic Competition in January 2011. This was the Club’s first attempt at hosting such an event which involved athletes from Eastern, Western and Central Ontario.
