People parade JOHN CURRY

PONY UP

john.curry@metroland.com

To live up to its name, the people parade planned for this year’s Villagefest in Stittsville on Saturday, Sept. 10 needs what its name implies – people. And everyone in the community is invited to take part. “The more, the merrier,” is how Stittsville Village Association (SVA) president Marilyn Jenkins puts it when she talks about how many she hopes take part in this new Villagefest activity. City of Ottawa mayor Jim Watson and Carleton-Mississippi Mills MP Gordon O’Connor have both been invited to attend to join city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri as people parade participants. And while just showing up and participating in the parade is being encouraged, so too is going that extra step. This could involve decorating a bicycle or wagon or wearing an outrageous hat or costume. This is not mandatory by any means but it sure will add a touch of fun to the event. Indeed, there will be prizes for the best decorated bicycles and wagons and probably for the best hats and costumes as well. Initially the SVA had considered having a theme for the people parade, such an historical one. But on second thought, it was decided not to have any particular theme, other than to encourage people to turn out and have fun. “Now it’s just a silly person theme,” says Ms. Jenkins.

City of Ottawa RideauGoulbourn ward councillor Scott Moffatt wants to get his hands dirty – and meet a few constituents at the same time. Whether it’s milking a cow or pouring a glass of wine, the first-term city councillor is looking at new ways to meet residents in his ward. Starting this month, Moffatt will work for a day at any business in his ward, something he has coined his “hire a councillor for a day” initiative. “I want to walk in the shoes of my residents,” he said. Instead of waiting for residents to come to his office or public meetings with their concerns or going door to door, Moffatt said the initiative will give him another way to reach residents. “It’s a different twist on canvassing. It’s a more relaxed environment that I can interact with residents.” He kicked off the proj-

ect by chasing kids around the Alfred Taylor Centre during a day camp in his hometown of North Gower on Tuesday, Aug. 24. The experience was a slightly different one from the rest of the “work days” he has planned because the camp is run by the city. Being there firsthand to see how the city runs the service will help him at budget time, Moffatt said. “It’s to be able to understand its impact on the community,” he said. And he discovered it is not only families and young children that benefit from the camps – the program provides muchneeded employment for youth in the ward, Moffatt said. Time will tell if Moffatt’s day at the camp prepares him for his next experience: working at Schouton Corner View Farms in Richmond, which raises dairy cows and cash crops. Moffatt intends to continue the project for his entire time in office, visiting one local business

a month. He has several lined up already, including the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (headquartered in Manotick), a family health centre and Jabulani Vineyard and Winery in Richmond. He says he has a lot of varied work experience to offer potential “employers,” including his first job cutting lawns, a stint washing dishes at Strathmere, sales at Tommy and Lefebvre and Golftown, reading gas meters for Enbridge and tending bar at several establishments. If businesses take Moffatt up on his offer, there are fringe benefits. The councillor will write up an account of his experience that will be posted on his website, http://rideaugoulbourn.ca, and in his newspaper columns. “I want to shed more light on these services and businesses in the community,” Moffatt said. If you are a local business that is interested in hiring Moffatt for a day, call his office at 613-5802491 or email rideaugoulbourn@ottawa.ca.

From page 1 This people parade will go along Abbott Street from Moss Hill Trail (at Sacred Heart High School) west to Village Square, the site of the Villagefest activities again this year. Those taking part are being asked to assemble at Moss Hill Trail and Abbott Street at 11 a.m. Abbott Street from Shea Road west to Stittsville Main Street is being closed down so that the people parade can take place. At 11:15 a.m., the people parade will leave the assembling point at Moss Hill

Trail and Abbott Street and will walk west on Abbott Street, headed for Village Square. The parade is expected to arrive at Village Square just before 12 noon where an opening ceremony for Villagefest will take place. This will include a minute of silence in memory of the tenth anniversary of 9-11 the next day. Villagefest activities beginning at 12 noon and running through the afternoon until 4 p.m. will include a performance by the Stittsville Concert Band and a talent show.

‘Drive-Thru Fundraiser’ SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Tim Hortons has a drive-thru. McDonald’s has a drive-thru. The local banks have drive-thru’s. So why not a church? At least this is what will be the case at the Community Bible Church on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville for one morning. It is a fundraising event in which the church is raising funds to help out the villagers of Seje in Kenya who are striving to survive with very little food and water, along

with trying to deal with life threatening diseases. This “Drive-Thru Fundraiser” will operate from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10 and here’s how it will work. Fair trade coffee, apple juice boxes, muffins and cookies will be served through the drive-thru “window” set up at the church. All of the monies raised through this will go to help in Seje. This fundraiser is part of the Kingdom Assignment project that Pastor Steve Stewart issued to Community

Bible Church parishioners on Sunday, May 29, when he handed out $100 bills to 100 of them, challenging them to use the money to make a positive impact on the world, “to pay it forward,” as it were. The money came from an anonymous donor. Helping the villagers of Seje in Kenya is not only part of the Kingdom Assignment project but also is part of an ongoing Community Bible Church initiative to establish an ongoing commitment to support this village in Kenya.

What’s bugging you? JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Can there be good bugs in gardening? After a summer out in the garden, combating many of the pests, you have to wonder. But those who attend the upcoming September meeting of the StittsvilleGoulbourn Horticultural Society will find out about bugs which are beneficial to gardening. That’s because master gardener Fran Dennett, who will be the guest speaker at the meeting, will be giving a presentation entitled “Good Bugs.” This will be the Horticultural Society’s first monthly meeting since last June due to the Society’s summer break from meetings. The September meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pretty Street Community Centre in Stittsville. Everyone is welcome to attend although there is a small fee for non-members. Catherine Disley is the current president of the Horticultural Society, with Marlene Lahey as first vice-president and Penny Horeczy as second vice-president. Mary MacNaughton is treasurer while Kate McDonald is secretary.

Responding to food crisis Ottawa city hall is showing the way in helping to support victims of famine in East Africa and we would hope that our community would get on board this initiative to help provide humanitarian aid to the estimated ten million people who are affected by this food crisis. Mayor Jim Watson has announced “Ottawa Cares: An Evening in Support of Famine Relief,” a gala fundraising effort being held at Ottawa city hall on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tickets to attend are $100 each and include cuisine and entertainment provided by a number of Ottawa’s African embassies. Proceeds from this evening will be provided to the Humanitarian Coalition, a joint coalition of CARE Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Que-

bec, Plan Canada and Save the Children Canada. In addition, the federal government will be matching the donations made. This food crisis in East Africa cries out for help. Granted, we have food supply and hunger problems right here in our own city and our own community as seen by the strong demand for the services of our food banks. But in East Africa, people, especially children, are dying from hunger. To those wishing to support the city’s fundraising effort, tickets can be reserved by emailing brook.simpson@ottawa.ca or by calling 613-580-2424, ext. 21526. What we would dearly love to see, perhaps with a presentation at this city fundraising function, would be a significant contribution by the Stittsville community.

Perhaps donations for this cause could be accepted at the annual Villagefest activities at Village Square Park on Saturday, Sept. 10, just before the city gala. We would suggest that a substantial donation by the Stittsville Food Bank to this fundraising effort would be in order. The Food Bank has substantial cash reserves thanks to the generosity of the community over the years. We recognize that the donors gave to help deal with hunger in this community but with such an overriding need now in East Africa, surely taking a sum such as $5,000 from these reserves would be seen in the context of helping our fellow man. It will have absolutely no impact on the operation of the Stittsville Food Bank which will remain with very healthy reserves.

COLUMN

Another sad gathering of the Ottawa tribe Ottawans sometimes fight the “government town” stereotype, the notion put out in some quarters that we live an artificial existence, sheltered from reallife concerns. “We’re not like that,” we say. “We have schools and stores and small business and churches and buses and all the stuff that other cities have. Our kids play soccer and our grownups play hockey in beer leagues just like you do.” When the hi-tech boom arrived in the ’90s, we were delighted. At last we could announce to the rest of the country that we had a private sector too. There was even a brief moment, glorious to some, when it was possible to say that tech was more important in our economy than government was. Obviously that didn’t last. It’s a government town again, no matter how much we claim otherwise. It’s a government town and a politics town and there are moments that illustrate the fact dramatically. One such was the death last week of Jack

CHARLES GORDON Layton. Outpourings of grief and respect happened all over Canada, especially in the Toronto area that Layton represented, but the Ottawa observance was unique to this city. On the day Layton’s death was announced, people streamed, in an unorganized way, to Parliament Hill, gathered and talked, sometimes to reporters and television cameras, sometimes to each other. They put flowers around the Centennial Flame. Despite no one telling them, it was is if they knew what to do and where to do it. This is the way a tribe behaves and our political community is a tribe, a much larger one that you would think at first. There are the politicians, the people who advise and work for them, the journalists, the lobbyists, the public servants

who work with politicians, the think tank folks, the academics and many other categories that I will think of in a minute. Certain events are powerful enough to affect all of these people, all the members of the tribe, emotionally and professionally. Jack Layton’s death is in this category. One of the first things they do is head for the Hill to talk to each other. The tribal bond is stronger than political bonds, so that for a time it doesn’t matter if people are Conservative or NDP. They are all thinking the same thoughts, mostly admiration for Layton’s courage and spirit. It is worth noting, in this respect, that the same admiration was coming from commentators in right-wing media, such as Sun News Network. That says something about the broad political consensus in this country, a consensus that is lacking in our neighbours to the south right now. The biggest tribal event in Ottawa in recent years was the

death of Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Thousands of people lined up for hours on Parliament Hill to pay their respects. They came from all over, both geographically and ideologically. I remember the random group I was standing in. There was a newspaper columnist, journalism student, a woman who once worked with Joe Clark, a pollster and a wellknown actress. I’m guessing that maybe one of us voted Liberal. But we were all there. And because politics is the life blood of this city, the members of this randomly assembled group had lots in com-

mon, lots to talk about over the two-plus hours the line moved around the Hill. Also, I think, a mutual respect that came from understanding how the game worked, understanding what other people in the game did, the difficulties they faced, knowing that in the end they were all trying to do something useful for their country, however misguided their political affiliation might be. And how could we not understand? This stuff what is talked about over dinner in Ottawa, which makes us either more or less interesting than people in other cities, depending on how you look at it. SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Alexandra Power, left, of Stittsville receives her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Certificate from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, right, the Governor General of Canada in a recent ceremony at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa. tawa mayor Jim Watson. This award acknowledged her community service which ranges from coaching youngsters in taekwondo at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex to entertaining seniors with her piano playing at the Stittsville Villa to organizing a fundraiser for the Angel Hair for Kids Foundation to cleaning cages and walking dogs at the Carp animal shelter to serving at church and Royal Canadian Legion dinners to playing music at various community celebrations and events. Alexandra has received the Conservatory Canada provincial Medal of Excellence for her piano playing. Last autumn, Alexandra received the coveted Chief Commissioner’s Gold Award for her involvement with the Girl Guides of Canada. Alexandra’s dream is to be a performance musician so it is not surprising that she was a member of seven bands this past year – the senior concert band and the jazz band at South Carleton High School, the Ottawa All Star Band, the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Senior Chamber Winds Ensemble and three Stittsville bands. She plays the clarinet, piano, guitar and tenor sax, although the clarinet is her instrument of choice. But she is not stopping at mastering four instruments. She is hoping to also learn the trumpet, trombone and euphonium. Alexandra, who is the daughter of Rick and Pat Power of Stittsville, is off to Queens University this fall in a Bachelor of Music degree program. She was granted one of Queens’ five music entrance scholarships recognizing outstanding young musicians. In Kingston, Alexandra will be residing with her sister Helen who is an outstanding youth in her own right. Helen is beginning studies towards her Masters of Environmental Studies degree at Queens. She was one of only seven students from across Canada granted a fellowship for this as well as a teaching assistant position at the university.

Meeting William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Receiving an award from the Governor General of Canada. Maintaining an average of over 90 percent and being presented with two major awards at her high school graduation. Yes, 17 year old Alexandra Power of Stittsville continues to add to her list of accomplishments and achievements. On Thursday, June 30, she was one of about 100 youth from across Canada selected to attend a barbecue/reception for William and Kate, the Duke of Duchess of Cambridge, at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. These youth, aged 13 to 30, were chosen because of their exceptional service towards making Canada a smart and caring nation. In Alexandra’s case, the selection was because of her involvement with the Duke of Edinburgh program, her participation in Girl Guides for 12 years and her community service involvement over the past four years in which she has donated over 1,050 of volunteer service in Stittsville and neighbouring communities. At this reception which was hosted by the Governor General, His Excellency David Johnson, and the Prime Minster, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, and their wives, Alexandra was able to meet William and Kate, certainly a highlight event that delighted her. It was only two days later, on Saturday, July 2, that Alexandra was back in the presence of the Governor General, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, who presented her with her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Certificate at a ceremony at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier in downtown Ottawa. Alexandra was one of 50 youth from across Canada who were recognized at this event for achieving the gold level in the program. Indeed, Alexandra, at 17, is one of the youngest recipients to ever receive this gold level award. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Challenge Program is a self-directed development program for Canadian youth aged 14 to 25. The program consists of three levels of achievement, namely bronze, silver and gold. Participants set goals in four program areas – community service, skills, physical recreation and adventurous journey. The stipulated requirements at each level must be met before the participant can progress to the next level. It was on Thursday, June 30, the same day as meeting the royals, that Alexandra attended her South Carleton High School graduation where she received the Lieutenant Governor’s Community Volunteer Award and the Kiwanis Mel Osborne Fellowship which is the highest award bestowed upon Kiwanian youth. Alexandra had been active on the executive of SCHS’s Key/Kiwanis Club for the past four years. She also received a Silver Medal for Academic Excellence as a result of her mid-nineties overall average. This flurry of events and ceremonies at the end of June/beginning of July topped off quite a year for Alexandra. In April, she was honoured as Stittsville’s Youth Citizen of the Year in the Stittsville Appreciation Awards, being presented with the award by city of Ot-

Sobeys slugs it ‘out of the park’ with new store JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

The wow factor is there. Just ask the over 400 who lined up waiting to be among the first customers at the new Sobeys store at the Stittsville Corners plaza at the corner of Hazeldean Road and Carp Road in Stittsville on Wednesday, Aug. 24. Or the dignitaries and community representatives ranging from CarletonMississippi Mills MP Gordon O’Connor to city of Ottawa mayor Jim Watson to Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri to Stittsville Village Association president Marilyn Jenkins who assembled inside the store just before its 8 a.m. opening for an official ribbon cutting and cake cutting ceremony. Or the Sobeys staff who were busily and excitedly preparing for the grand opening rush and who assembled en masse to witness the ribbon cutting ceremony with franchise owner Tim LaPlante, his wife Sandy and others such as Sobeys senior vice-president for Ontario Paul Del Duca and Sobeys vicepresident of operations for Ontario, Peter Weicker. Whether it is the store’s innovative layout or its subtle colour scheme or its prevalent presence of staff, offering samples, help or advice or its eye-catching signage, ranging from ones proclaiming “Your Well Being – Natural and Organic Foods” to “Your Pharmacy – Beauty, Baby and Pharmacy” or the two key messages emblazoned on the wall in the checkout area, the one saying “If you’re not completely satisfied, bring it back and we’ll

make it right,” and another simply reading “Thank You for shopping Sobeys,” the new 49,500 square foot store gave the first customers lots to see and experience as they entered the store, being met by franchise owner Tim LaPlante and his wife Sandy, receiving gift certificate envelopes and with the ladies each receiving a fresh rose. But it was perhaps Sobeys Ontario senior vice-president Paul Del Duca who put the new store and its features best, at least in layman’s terms. “This is a home run,” he said about the store in his remarks at the ribbon cutting and he no doubt meant a grand slam, not just a solo shot. “The store is spectacular,” he told his fellow dignitaries and the assembled staff at the ribbon cutting ceremony, saying that the store had been given all the tools necessary to fully serve the community. “Fresh foods and healthy wellness is what we are all about,” he added, plugging the new Sobeys focus on offering a variety of fresh and prepared foods in addition to a full service deli, bakery, and seafood and meat departments. Mayor Watson, at the ribbon cutting, told of his experience while a provincial cabinet minister in Toronto. Serving as the Ontario Minister of Health Promotion, he had to shop for fresh produce and healthy, nutritious food and he found these in a nearby Sobeys store. But despite his previous experience as a Sobeys shopper, the mayor too was impressed with this new Sobeys in Stitts-

ville. “What a beautiful store,” he exclaimed in his remarks, pointing out that over 200 jobs have been created with the opening of the store. He praised Sobeys for making such a large investment and also praised Sobeys for being a good corporate leader, known for giving back to the community. Stittsville ward councillor picked up on this theme in his remarks at the ribbon cutting ceremony, noting how Sobeys had listened and worked with the community in the planning stages for the new store. He in particular cited the relocation of the store’s receiving dock from its original position at the rear of the store to the side of the store, responding to concerns voiced by adjacent homeowners. Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Gordon O’Connor, in his remarks at the ribbon cutting ceremony, noted that this Stittsville Sobeys was the second new Sobeys store in the area, with another having just opened on March Road in Kanata. He said that this shows that Sobeys has great confidence in the west end area of the city of Ottawa and noted that the over 200 jobs created with this Stittsville store is good news for the community. Stittsville Sobeys franchise owner Tim LaPlante, a veteran in the grocery business, in his remarks at the ribbon cutting ceremony, said that he found the new store to be so exciting. “It’s a one stop food store,” he said. He began the store’s community commitment by presenting a $1,000 gift card

to the Stittsville Food Bank for use in purchasing fresh products at the store for its clients. Using a pair of green handled scissors and joined by the assembled dignitaries while watched by his assembled staff, Mr. LaPlante then formally cut a green ribbon emblazoned with Sobeys name to formally and officially open the new store. Then, after another formal cutting, this time a giant cake emblazoned with “Welcome to Sobeys” on it that he and his wife Sandy cut, Mr. LaPlante and Sandy took up positions at the main entrance where they then greeted each and every one of the customers who had lined up and who started to enter the store right at the planned 8 a.m. opening. Hours of operation for this new Sobeys store are Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Among the store’s offerings are ovenroasted deli meats that are cooked fresh daily with no additives or preservatives, fresh mozzarella made in the store every Saturday, fresh sausages made in store, full service hot dinner entrees including made-to-order pizza and barbecued chicken, made-to-order cakes from the bakery, freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh produce. Sobeys Inc. is a national grocery retailer and food distributor headquartered in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Sobeys owns or franchises more than 1,300 stores across Canada under various retail banners that include Sobeys.

TAKE TIME TO HAVE SOME FUN THIS WINTER!

COME CURLING!

There was lots of applause at an appreciation dinner for longtime local MPP Norm Sterling on Thursday, Aug. 25 at the Canadian Golf and Country Club west of Stittsville but the loudest and most robust came when former Ontario premier Ernie Eaves described what he viewed as the unfair treatment that Mr. Sterling had been subjected to by his own PC party in a nomination process that saw him defeated by PC newcomer Jack MacLaren who is now the party’s candidate in the Carleton-Mississippi Mills riding for the upcoming provincial election. “The treatment that Norm got from his own party was not very polite, it was not fair, it was not loyal, it was not compassionate, it was not even and it was not honest,” Mr. Eaves said, receiving loud applause and cheers from the crowd of over 200 at the event. He lamented that Queen’s Park had lost a “great, great man” in not having Mr. Sterling running for re-election. But other than this one remark that seemed to reflect what everyone in the tented room was thinking, the appreciation evening embraced a positive atmosphere, with praise for Mr. Sterling for his accomplishments as an MPP, for his decency and fair play as a politician and for his political mentorship of others, including both of the two former Ontario premiers present, Mike Harris and Mr. Eaves. Former premier Mike Harris told how Mr. Sterling helped not only him but all new MPP in learning the ropes at the Ontario Legislature. “Norm was a mentor to me,” he said. “He was good with all of us new members including others such as Ernie Eaves and John Baird who will tell you that he was a mentor to us all in the parliamentary system.” He noted how Mr. Sterling was always a strong advocate for more power for MPP’s and for all-party parliamentary committees. Federal cabinet minister and former MPP John Baird cited the construction of the four lane highway 416 in the area as one of Mr. Sterling’s legacies, saying that the project would not

have happened with his leadership on the file. He also noted Mr. Sterling’s work as chair of the legislature’s public accounts committee. “He has made a heck of a difference in our riding and throughout Ontario and even Canada and beyond,” Mr. Baird enthusiastically said in praise of Mr. Sterling, calling him a great friend, a great legislator and a great Canadian. Former premier Ernie Eaves referred to the respect that all MPP’s have had for Mr. Sterling, noting his own experience in which Mr. Sterling went out of his way to guide him when he was just a newly elected MPP. “Norm is totally a class act and he has never, never forgotten where he came from and he has always represented not just his constituents well but the people of the province of Ontario,” Mr. Eaves said. City of Ottawa mayor Jim Watson, who previously was an MPP and Ontario cabinet minister, serving in the Ontario Legislature opposite Mr. Sterling, echoed Mr. Baird’s remarks about Mr. Sterling’s involvement in getting highway 416 built, saying that it was Mr. Sterling who “pushed and pushed and pushed” to have the highway constructed. He also noted Mr. Sterling’s early leadership in the fight against smoking at a time when the issue was not that popular. As Minister of Health Promotion, Mr. Watson brought in the “Smoke Free Ontario” legislation. “I know, Norm, that the Canadian Cancer Society and the Ontario Division are extremely grateful for the work you did on that that set the framework for us to bring in comprehensive anti-smoking legislation,” Mr. Watson said. He said that Mr. Sterling brought both “substance and class” to the Ontario Legislature and that he was always “a true gentleman in every sense of the word.” Another speaker at the appreciation dinner was longtime MPP Jim Bradley. The audience at the appreciation dinner was to have seen a taped message from PC leader Tim Hudak but it was not seen due to technical difficulties. Mr. Sterling, in his remarks at the

dinner, said that he has loved working for his community and the province for the past 34 years. He said that his years as a political representative for the area have given him the opportunity to make a difference, something that many people never have a chance to do. He also noted that his long political life had enabled him to make and develop numerous friendships which he would never have had the opportunity to do as a private citizen. A number of presentations were made to Mr. Sterling at the appreciation dinner. Mayor Watson presented him with a framed letter of appreciation and congratulations on behalf of Ottawa city council. Steven Lewis, president of the Carleton-Mississippi Mills PC Riding Association, made a presentation to Mr. Sterling and his wife Joan on behalf of the Association. Others making presentations included Smiths Falls mayor Dennis Staples, Lanark County warden Sharon Mousseau and Beckwith township reeve Richard Kidd. Mr. Sterling was first elected as an MPP for the area in June, 1977 and has served in the Legislature continuously since then. He will cease to be the area’s MPP when the writ is dropped for the upcoming Oct. 6 provincial election.

Writing, printmaking, travel and painting will all have their day in the sun, as it were, at the Stittsville branch of the Ottawa Public Library in September. It all begins on Wednesday, Sept. 14 when the first of these free adult fall programs is held as Ruth Latta, a published author and columnist and a literary award winner, will be presenting “Writers on Writing.” She will be dealing with how to create works of the imagination in this seminar that will run from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Ms. Latta received the Northern Lit Award for Fiction this year. She has written seven novels and three anthologies. Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. will see a special afternoon for seniors sponsored by MASC which stands for Multicultural Arts for Schools and Communities. Printmaking artist Violeta Borinsonik will demonstrate several printing techniques including printing in relief and monocopy, a process by which only a single copy is produced. Those attending will be asked to bring along four photographs which are meaningful to their lives. This presentation is limited to those 50 years of age and older. On Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 1 p.m. to 3

GRC Closings I would like to remind everyone that the Goulbourn Recreation Complex will be closed (except for the arena) from September 3rd to the 11th, inclusive. Previous notification was given to clients in the City’s Spring and Summer guide, Fall guide, summer and fall flyers and on the web. There is however one change to the pool closure as there is a section of pool tiles that are lifting from the pool floor. A contractor will be coming to effect repairs from September 12th to the 16th. This does not affect the remainder of the facility, only the pool. The decision to close the pool and make repairs was made last Friday after a survey of the pool’s floor was done. The GRC is offering clients a membership hold if they will not be using it as this is part of the city’s policy to offer an extension for the duration of shut down periods as facility improvements are common to all of our facilities. The GRC is happy to give the extension to their members. Hydro Work I would like to share some information that Hydro One Forestry Services shared with my office. They will be conducting some important vegetation management work in the Stittsville area. In order to prevent vegetation caused outages and eliminate potential safety hazards to the public, Hydro One must control vegetation along the transmission right-of-way in Ottawa neighbourhoods. These tower and pole lines are high voltage lines that supply customers within Ottawa and surrounding area. The vegetation management activities will occur in two stages: Stage One– Commencing Jan 2012 Branches near power lines will be pruned and any dead or hazardous trees along the sides of the Hydro right-ofway will be removed. Any wood will remain on site. Stage Two– Commencing April 2012 The removal/control of non-compatible brush (under 15 cm in diameter at a height of 1.5 m) located on the rightof-way. They will try to avoid compatible species such as sumac, dogwood and lilac where possible. Hydro One would appreciate your assistance in advising them of any organizations and community associations which would be interested in their tower line forestry maintenance program. They will attempt to avoid any inconvenience to affected property owners and appreciate your patience as they complete this important work. For further information please consult the Hydro one website. www.hydroone.com. Iber Road Re-surfacing As mentioned in last week’s column, the firm Thomas Cavanagh Construction Ltd. has been contracted by the City of Ottawa to carry out the road resurfacing work on Iber Road, south of the Hazeldean Road intersection to north of the Abbott Street intersection. Cavanagh is assuming full responsibility for the construction work until it is completed. Their company will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to your day to day business, but as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the resurfacing work. It was brought to my attention, however, that the contact number listed was not functioning. The correct phone number is 613-831-3090. Certainly should you have further concerns as the project progresses, you can contact my office. As well, you are welcome to speak to Adam Goudreau who is a senior Thomas Cavanagh Construction staffer working on this project at 613-229-5854. Labour Day Hours The City of Ottawa reminds residents of the following schedule changes for the Labour Day Holiday (Monday, September 5).

Client services: Ottawa City Hall and all seven Client Service Centres, including the Government Service Centres located at 110 Laurier Avenue West and 580 Terry Fox Drive, will be closed on the Labour Day Holiday. Business will resume as usual on Tuesday, September 6. The City’s 3-1-1 Contact Centre will be open for urgent matters requiring the City’s immediate attention. Call 3-1-1 or 613-580-2400 to speak to a customer service representative. For persons with a hearing-related disability, call (TTY: 613-580-2401). Garbage and recycling: There will be no curbside green bin, recycling, garbage or leaf and yard waste collection on Labour Day. Labour Day’s pickup will take place on Tuesday, September 6. In addition, the collection of garbage, green bin, leaf and yard waste and recycling materials will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. Transit service: OC Transpo will operate a Sunday schedule on Labour Day. OC Transpo Sales and Information Centres will be open on Labour Day, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lincoln Fields, Place d’Orléans and St. Laurent, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Rideau Centre. The OC Transpo Information Centre (613-741-4390) will be open on Labour Day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The OC Transpo Customer Relations Department (613842-3600) will be closed on Labour Day. Recreation services: Many pools, arenas and fitness centres will be open on Labour Day for public swimming, aquafitness, skating and fitness classes with modified schedules. Please check ottawa.ca or the facility of your choice for details. City-operated Child Care Centres will be closed on the Labour Day Holiday. Library services: All branches, departments and services of the Ottawa Public Library will be closed for the Labour Day Holiday. Regular hours will resume Tuesday, September 6. For more information, please consult the City website at www.ottawa.ca Recreational Guide In the next few days, a new hyperlink will be appearing on my website regarding Rural West End Recreational Services. This guide will include contact information for various programs, organizations and have information about the services in the Rural West End. A webpage on the city website has already been set up just for the Rural West Area and will include this information. Here is the weblink: http://www.ottawa.ca/rec_culture/park_facility/facilities/rec_centres/rural_west_en.html Always listening and acting on your concerns As your Councillor, I always welcome your keen input and ideas on how we can sustain and improve Stittsville. Please contact our office anytime by phone at 613-5802476 or by e-mail at Shad.Qadri@ottawa.ca. My ward office is situated in the Goulbourn Recreation Complex, located at 1500 Shea Road. Further information about any of these articles can be found on my website or you can contact my office to obtain details.

p.m., it’s cruise time. Roger Stone will be the tour guide for this armchair travel session, with the voyage going to Guadeloupe and beyond. September’s special activities at the Stittsville library branch wind up with an open house on Friday, Sept. 30 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. that celebrates Canada’s Culture Days taking place at that time. Artist and instructor Heather Gallup will be hosting this open house as she and her art students will demonstrate the art and technique of watercolour painting. There is no registration required for this Sept. 30 open house. However, registration is required for the other three programs dealing with writing, printmaking and travel. And just how do you register, you wonder? Well, it’s easy. Just visit the Stittsville library branch and sign up or phone the library branch at 613-836-3381. There is also online registration on the Ottawa Public Library’s website but this online registration does not open until Wednesday, Sept. 14. While this will be OK for the Sept. 21 and Sept. 28 programs at the Stittsville library, it will not be very convenient for Ms. Latta’s writing seminar on that very day, Sept. 14. So a visit to the Stittsville library or a phone call to the library to register is recommended in this case.

JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

It seems like an oxymoron – an active sitting exercise program. But as contradictory as the program’s name may seem, implying both activity and sitting, it is a program that works and has been doing so since 1995 when it was started in Stittsville by Ottawa Public Health nurse Janice Tughan. She explains that this active sitting exercise program is quite simply a program of gentle but effective exercises meant for those who may have mobility problems or other conditions that mean that they cannot join a regular aerobics class. But the program does exercise every muscle and joint in the body, with the added benefit that there is always a chair right there with the person. Indeed, the person can either sit or stand doing these exercises, a lot of which are the same as one would do in physiotherapy treatment. The free program is volunteer led, with three different volunteers taking turns leading the class. All are thoroughly trained including with CPR expertise. The program features very low impact, gentle stretches and exercises that are meant to help a person with daily living challenges such as being able to reach an item stored in an upper cupboard. This active sitting exercise program is offered every Friday morning at the Pretty Street Community Centre in Stitts-

ville, with people of all ages welcome. The program had about 15 participants last year. It begins for another year on Friday, Sept. 16, running through to May. The chairs used in the program are provided but participants can bring along their own weights or stretchies if they so wish. Janice Tughan says that the program lasts from 45 minutes to an hour each Friday, with the length depending on “how chatty people are.” Indeed, this social experience with other participants is a big part of the program. “It’s the social aspect too that’s great,” says nurse Tughan. So, if you are looking for a program that features gentle but thorough exercising, done using a chair or not using a chair, with a friendly group of others who have similar exercise needs, you should consider this active sitting exercise program, oxymoron sounding or not. For more information about this active sitting exercise program or to arrange to attend, please contact Ottawa Public Health nurse Janice Tughan at 613-5806744, ext. 15251. You may also be interested in becoming part of the indoor walking group that meets upstairs at the Stittsville District Community Centre on both Mondays and Fridays. This group re-starts for the new season on Monday, Sept. 12, with everyone welcome to take part. Participants walk in the upstairs hall

at the arena on Mondays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. It is a free program and for more

information, you should also contact Ottawa Public Health nurse Janice Tughan at 613-580-6744, ext. 15251.

When students at Holy Spirit Catholic School in Stittsville return to school next week, there will be something new in the school yard. It’s an amphitheatre/outdoor classroom that has just recently been created thanks to the generosity of the Home Depot and the efforts of parent volunteers, both in helping to construct the facility and to focus attention on improving the school yard not only for teachers and staff but for the surrounding committee. Home Depot donated all of the lumber and materials for the project along with a team of ten Home Depot employees and family members who volunteered their free time to construct this amphitheatre/outdoor classroom for Holy Spirit students. A number of Holy Spirit parents also helped in the construction which was led by the

skilled Home Depot team. This was a project of the School Yard Improvement Committee at Holy Spirit Catholic School. When the committee surveyed Holy Spirit students and parents in 2009 when the committee began its work, both students and parents expressed interest in an amphitheatre/outdoor classroom as something that would improve the school yard. While the school yard to date does not have any play structure equipment, the forest at the rear of the Stittsville Main Street school is treasured by the students as a place to play and also learn. Indeed, in 2009, the School Yard Improvement Committee purchased mulch in order to enrich the health of this forest. The next step was to do something to take more advantage of the forest surroundings of the school yard and an outdoor classroom/amphitheatre

seemed to be a perfect fit. The amphitheatre is intended to encourage student creativity in the performing arts such as drama, music and dance. The facility will also be used as an outdoor classroom, with enough seating for a class of students and a teacher, making for a nice alternative to the traditional indoor classroom. When it is not being formally used for such purposes, it will be a space where students can sit and read, enjoy a quiet time, play games or otherwise enjoy the location. A garden and a tree are to be added to the facility in the near future. The design of the amphitheatre/ outdoor classroom was created by the School Yard Improvement Committee while keeping in mind the reuse of the framed space which remains from the former play structure which was removed six years ago.

nated voice part. Robert Dueck is an experienced director and his expertise can discover this ability in you and help you develop it. Rehearsals for the coming fall session for the Goulbourn Male Chorus will begin this Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at St. Thomas Anglican Church in Stittsville. Anyone interested in joining the Goulbourn Male Chorus

should contact Mr. Dueck at 613836-1824 or email him at dueckrobt@gmail.com. The Goulbourn Male Chorus again this year, this like in its inaugural season, will be presenting a Christmas concert as well as a spring concert. The group is also available for singing engagements at community events and functions. For instance, at the end of

May, after its spring concert, the group sang at a ladies’ conference in Winchester. It turned out to be a fun occasion for the group, not only because it was another opportunity to sing together before a crowd but also because the conference had a potluck meal which the men also got to enjoy – and enjoy it, they did! Singing can stir up an appetite, it would seem.

It is the “Goulbourn Male Chorus” with men singing under the direction of director Robert Dueck. But this Male Chorus is not a total male domain – there is one key member who is female. And that is Barb Creech, the group’s accompanist, an accomplished pianist and piano instructor in her own right, but also one who appreciates the talent and music of the Goulbourn Male Chorus and has chosen to be part of the experience. “I like being part of this talented male chorus and enjoy their music selections so much that I want to continue working with them as the chorus accompanist,” Ms. Creech notes. She initially joined the group as its accompanist last January, just several months after its formation the previous September. The longtime Kanata resident who also teaches piano to students primarily from Kanata and Stittsville enjoys playing the piano and accompanying choral groups, so it was an easy decision for her to make when she was asked if she would be the Male Chorus’ accompanist. She is now looking forward to the coming months as the Goulbourn Male Chorus begins its second year of operation. “I am glad to be part of the chorus team as we continue to develop and grow our music program and the opportunity of bringing awareness as to what male chorus music can offer to both immediate and neighbouring communities through our concert programming,” Ms. Creech comments. With the Goulbourn Male Chorus going into the coming season with its initial core group now entering its second year of singing together, with the continuing enthusiasm of its founding director Robert Dueck and with the musical as-

sistance of accompanist Barb Creech, it promises to be a marvelous season of music for the group. And its hope is that more men will join this community men’s choir and get to experience the joy that comes from making music as a member of a male chorus. The requirement for joining is quite simple, namely an ability to match pitch and sing a desig-

Thoughts of snow and winter at a summertime horse show – is that weird or what? But when you think about it, raising funds for the Snowsuit Fund at the horse shows held at Fiddler’s Green Stables last weekend is not weird at all – rather, it is wonderful because it not only allows the young riders and their families to give back to their community through supporting the Snowsuit Fund but also gives the young riders the opportunity to realize that there are children right in the community who are in need and who without the Snowsuit Fund would not have proper winter clothing. And given the equestrian nature of the event, it only made sense that the fundraising for the Snowsuit Fund would have an equine touch to it. That’s why donations for the Snowsuit Fund were collected in a unique way – youthful volunteers walked around the show grounds beside Black’s Road just outside Stittsville leading one of Fiddler’s Green Stables ponies. The pony was dressed in a special horse blanket with specially made red collection bags on each side, provided thanks to young rider Rachel Nicholson. And when all was said and done, this unique way of collecting for the Snowsuit Fund ended up raising $300, enough for the Snowsuit Fund to provide seven

and a half snowsuits for youngsters this coming winter. A donation of $40 enables the Snowsuit Fund to provide a warm snowsuit for a child. The pony collection took place on both Saturday and Sunday, for two hours in the morning each day and two hours in the afternoon. All of the youngsters who participated in leading the pony around report having a great time and were proud of the amount that they raised. Morgan Davis, who rides out of Fiddler’s Green Stables and who has been competing in horse shows for three years, was one of those who led the pony around the grounds, collecting for the Snowsuit Fund. He said that people willingly gave a donation once he told them that the funds were being raised for the Snowsuit Fund. This is the first time that Fiddler’s Green Stables had undertaken a fundraising initiative at one of its horse shows but it will not be the last as a decision has been taken to use these horse shows as an opportunity to give back to the community. The Snowsuit Fund is one way to give back to the community, helping children who are in need and who are contemporaries of the young riders who take part in the horse shows. In the 2010-2011 season, the Snowsuit Fund distributed over 15,000 new snowsuits to children 15 years and under.

The Snowsuit Fund has been serving the Ottawa area since 1982. Fiddler’s Green Stables, located on Flewellyn Road just west of Black’s Road on the outskirts of Stittsville, has been in operation for over 35 years. It offers a full range of services to meet the needs of any equestrian enthusiast from the novice or recreational rider up to the top levels of the competitive circuit.

Family owned and operated, Fiddler’s Green Stables has over 100 acres of facilities including three outdoor show rings, two outdoor sand rings, three cross country courses, two dressage rings and a heated indoor arena. Last weekend Fiddler’s Green Stables held silver and bronze level horse shows. Fiddler’s Green Stables also held similar horse shows last May and June.

Stittsville Mite Girl Selects happy with win over Whitby SPECIAL TO THE NEWS It was only one win out of three games but to the players on the Stittsville Mite Girl Selects softball team, it was an awesome feeling. “The girls couldn’t have been more happy with their win than if they had won the whole thing,” noted head coach Kevin Daize in an email reporting on the team’s performance in the provincial tournament hosted by the Provincial Women’s Softball Association of Ontario in Brantford on the weekend of August 20/21. The Stittsville Mite Girls Selects softball team went into this provincial championship tournament with only seven weeks of practice. After losing to the Vaughn Senior and Unionville teams, the Stittsville girls posted a spectacular 11-10

victory over Whitby, winning the consolation prize. This just made the tournament for the Stittsville girls. The Stittsville Mite Girl Selects softball team would like to thank the residents of Stittsville and surrounding areas for their generosity and support during the team’s bottle drive which was held to help offset costs related to participation in this provincial tournament. The Stittsville Mite Girls Selects softball team includes Madison Cowan, Chantelle Ross, Lauren Daize, Allison Cooney, Mackenzie Dicks, Annabel Durr, Jessica MacLeod, Kate Magnan, Chloe Gavrilovic, Avery Batchelar, Isabella Halliday and Amanda Wall. Tori Carswell Memorial Golf tournament raises $35,000 JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

It was Tori Carswell Memorial Golf Tournament time at the Canadian Golf and Country Club west of Stittsville last Saturday. It has been eight years now since the first tournament was held in 2004, just months after Tori died of the childhood cancer called neuroblastoma in Jan. 2004 following a courageous battle that galvanized the whole Stittsville community. Tori’s winning smile and demeanour generated widespread community support. Funds raised by friends, family and the community meant that Tori enjoyed some special moments during her final weeks of life. This is what inspired the Carswell family to set up Tori’s Helping Hand so that the same benefits could be available to other palliative care oncology children. Tori’s Helping Hand was established in 2005 and is part of the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Programs Inc. Tori’s Helping Hand provides funds to palliative care oncology children and their families as well as to families whose children require a transplant. While the initial Tori Carswell Memorial Golf Tournament in 2004 raised $18,000 for the Neuroblastoma Research Fund and the Children’s Wish Foundation, all of the funds raised by the tournament since 2005 have gone to Tori’s

Helping Hand. The 2005 tournament raised $27,500 while every tournament since then has raised over $34,000. This year’s eighth annual tournament raised $35,000 with the proceeds going to Tori’s Helping Hand. The tournament this year featured a putting contest, a silent auction, lunch, a shotgun start at 1 p.m., a dinner MC’d by Michael O’Byrne from CTV, and a live auction. Tori Carswell, who was born in 1994, began having back and leg pain when she was five and a half years old. She was eventually diagnosed with Stage lV Neuoblastoma just before her sixth birthday. She went through treatment that consisted of rounds of chemo, surgery, stem cell transplant and radiation. But within a year, the cancer had returned. But Tori and her family would not give up. The community of Stittsville, along with her friends and family, rallied around her during the summer and fall of 2001. Over $100,000 was raised to assist with medical and travel costs because more treatment meant travelling out of Canada. Tori went to a New York City facility where she underwent a somewhat experimental type of treatment that was painful and, unfortunately, was not effective. She underwent other treatments but the disease spread to her lungs and liver and was given just weeks to live. Christmas 2003, when she was nine and a half

years ago, turned out to be wonderful as Tori rallied and felt great. However, in Jan. 2004, she deteriorated and had to return to hospital where she passed away on Jan. 16. Tori’s infectious smile and passion for

life was an inspiration to many in the Stittsville community. Her courage and strength throughout her struggle with cancer inspired a whole community to appreciate the little things in life and to live each day like it is your last.

Special to the News

It’s “Mums for Thanksgiving” time – or least, the time to order these mums which are delivered by members of the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville on the weekend before Thanksgiving. This is the Rotary Club’s major fundraising project of the year, providing much of the revenue which allows the Rotary Club to do its work both in the community and internationally. Between now and Sept. 13, Rotary Club members will be approaching local businesses and individuals about the sale of these mums. In addition, they will also be accepting orders from anyone interested. The $14 per plant cost includes delivery of the mum to a business or home location along with a message from the sender. The mums this year are going to be delivered on Friday, Sept. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 1 which is just a week before Thanksgiving itself – a perfect time to say thanks to a business associate or client or to remind a friend or family member just how much they mean to you. The Club receives revenue not only for the sale of the mums but also for delivery them. This year the Club is hoping to far exceed the number sold last year. The Rotary Club of West Ottawa is the lead club for this sale and delivery of mums project called “Mums for Thanksgiving” which is now entering its 16th year. Participating groups like the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville sell the mums and also deliver them in the local area, whether they sell them or others sell them. Anyone who wants to order one or more of these mums and have it delivered to a business associate or client or a family member or friend should contact Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville president Theresa Qadri at 613-6206245, immediate past president Leo Maiorino at 613-831-8668 or any Club member which includes Alfredo Patricio, Barb Gladwish, Brad Spriggs, Carolyn Clark, Grace Bell, Jas Michalski, Maher Abou-Guendia, Maria Harrington, Stephen Hunter, Susan Namulindwa, Valerie Wright and Wes Zacharuk.

The Friendship Club invites new members to join and try out the many activities provided by the Club. A monthly luncheon is held on the last Wednesday of the month. The annual membership fee is only $12 per person. Those interested should contact membership coordinator Lorraine Gillies at 613-599-3297. The Friendship Club organizes and offers a variety of programs to which everyone is invited. The activities that are going on this summer include exercise,

bridge and euchre. Exercise is held on Mondays at 10 a.m. at the Pretty Street Community Centre in Stittsville. Please contact Helen at 613836-6766. Bridge is played on Fridays at 1 p.m. at the Pretty Street Community Centre. Please contact Lillaine at 613-831-2150. Bridge is also played on Fridays at 1 p.m. at the Johnny Leroux Stittsville Community Arena hall. Please contact Lorraine at 613-599-3297. Euchre is played on Fridays at 7 p.m. at the Pretty Street Community Centre. Please contact Heather at 613-838-2743.

Broadway tunes highlight Hyde Park concert JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Broadway came to Hyde Park in Richmond on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 25. The musical visit happened thanks to songstress Sonja Milson, a former New York City resident who loves Broadway songs. “I love show tunes,” she told the 90 people from the Hyde Park community and others who had gathered in one of the courtyards at Hyde Park to hear the hour long concert. While Sonja sang songs from some of Broadway’s most renowned shows, she did not limit her offerings just to Broadway tunes. She also included songs from such a wide breath of artists such as Anne Murray, Celine Dion, Kenny Rogers and Natalie Cole. Singing from the gazebo in the centre of the courtyard, with the audience spread out, sitting in lawn chairs, enjoying the sunshine under a blue sky with puffy white clouds, Sonja began her concert singing the best known song from the 1935 opera musical Porgy & Bess, namely “Summertime,” a George Gershwin piece. This led into the inspirational “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” from the 1959 Broadway musical The Sound of Music and

then, a few years later, in the Academy Award winning movie of the same name, produced in 1965. Next up was the widely recorded tune “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” from the 1945 Rogers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. This song has been recorded over the years by such singers as Judy Garland, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Staying with the Broadway musical theme, Sonja followed up with “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables, which was one of the longest running musicals ever on Broadway. And so it went. Sonja sang “Someone Like You,” from the musical Jekyll & Hyde which debuted on Broadway in 1997 and had a four year run. Abandoning Broadway for a moment, Sonja turned to what she called one of her favourite love songs and one which she dedicated to all those who have helped others succeed. The song was “Because You Love Me,” which was a number one hit for Canada’s own Celine Dion. She followed this up with Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” which became so famous thanks to the 1997 movie Titanic. Still away from Broadway but staying in the world of film, Sonja sang “A Whole New World” from the 1992 Disney film Aladdin. This song won an Academy

Award for best song. Sonja returned to Broadway tunes from The Sound of Music and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1982 musical Cats before leaving Broadway again for the song “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do” which Anne Murray made famous, singing in duet with Dave Loggins in 1974.

She then sang “Through the Years,” the early 80’s hit written by Lionel Richie and sung by Kenny Rogers. A former convertible motorist, Sonja then sang “Flash Bam Alakazam,” which she identified as one of her favourite driving songs. See BROADWAY, page 25

This song was redone by Natalie Cole after it had initially been done by her father, the great Nate King Cole. Sonja ended her concert on a high note, with two of Broadway’s greatest songs from the 1988 Broadway musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Phantom of the Opera. She sang “Think of Me,” followed by “All I ask of You.” Sonja Milson has lived in Ottawa for the past ten years, having moved here after meeting her husband while he was working on contract in New York City. She has done some work with Orpheus and Opera Lyra but she now has three children, ranging in age from 7 to a babe in arms, and so, because of family responsibilities, she has restricted her

performing to private gatherings and events like this concert in the courtyard at Hyde Park. Those in the audience were able to enjoy refreshments such as fruit punch, cookies and strawberries with a chocolate topping at the concert, served to them thanks to Hyde Park Canada. This was the final of four free “Singing in the Park” concerts which were presented by Hyde Park Canada for the enjoyment of Hyde Park residents, their families and their friends. This was the first year that Hyde Park Canada had presented such concerts at Hyde Park in Richmond. The previous concerts had featured singer Dee Anne with a so-called “stroll down memory lane,” the Wellington Street Barbershop Quartet and the 60’s and 70’s music of the band Revolver.

Special to the News

The Stittsville Legion golf day at the Madawaska Golf Club at Arnprior on Thursday, Aug. 18 was not only lots of fun but was a successful fundraiser for Main Street Community Services in Stittsville, an organization which provides services for special needs children and their families. The tournament included a putting competition, an auction and a steak dinner. Top team this year, finishing at eight below par, was that of John and Marjorie Watts, May Beatty and Sandy Parkill. The tournament generated a total of $2,200 for Main Street Community Services, with the Legion’s Survivors Club kicking in another $500. Thanks to the Madawaska Golf Club and all of the volunteers who helped make this event such a success. Shirley Munroe would like to thank all the Legion members who made such a wonderful meal. The garage sale held at the Legion parking lot on Saturday, Aug. 20 generated a profit of $330. John Leroux and Guy Bertrand worked hard in making this so successful. First time Legion visitors Julia and Joseph Kalenga

dropped by to visit the garage sale and to have lunch. They have recently moved to Stittsville from the Congo. Fred Appel reports that the new darts season will begin on Thursday, Sept. 15 in the upstairs lounge at the Legion Hall, beginning at 7 p.m. There are still some spots available. Players from beginner to advanced are most welcome to take part. In addition, you do not have to be a Legion member to participate. The emphasis in this Thursday night dart league is to have fun and to establish friendships in the community. On Thursday, Sept. 15, the teams will be formed, there will be a quick review of the rules and then there will be a fun night of darts to get the rust out of your arms. Volunteers are needed to help organize some of the special events being planned for the upcoming darts season such as a “turkey shoot.” A meeting of those interested in volunteering in this way will be held at the Legion Hall on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. The next trip to the Slots at Rideau Carleton for the 55 Plus Club will be on Wednesday, Sept. 7. For more information, please call Marion Gullock at 613-836-5254.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS The Stittsville Concert Band performed more than 25 times in the past year, a phenomenal annual number for such a community group. At these performances, it exhibited a variety of musical styles, from classical to baroque to swing to modern. And these performances do not count the appearances by the Stittsville Concert Band’s two other associated groups, the Main & Abbott Dance Band and the Dinner band, with 17 and 10 members respectively. These two other groups are tailored for certain events such as smaller venues or occasions requiring specific music. Sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion Stittsville Branch 618, the Stittsville Concert Band rehearses at the Legion Hall on Stittsville Main Street on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. New members are always welcome, with the only requirement being providing your own instrument and a willingness to play in a group of 30-plus musicians.

Musicians of all ages perform with the Stittsville Concert Band which means that newer players of all ages have an opportunity to improve under the tutelage of experienced musicians in a congenial, relaxed setting. “The connection with younger high school musicians to players in their senior years allows mentoring at all ages,” says Stittsville Concert Band director Frank Martens who is a retired Canadian Forces senior musician. Now entering its fourth year since inception, the Stittsville Concert Band has built a strong musical reputation and voice in the community thanks to its participation in events such as Stittsville’s Villagefest, the Canada Day celebrations and Legion functions. “Various concerts allow us to display a varied palette of musical emotion,” says Mr. Martens. The past year has seen the Stittsville Concert Band involved with two memorable and significant events. One was performing a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy at

the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. The other was initiating and performing at the inaugural Stittsville Christmas Festival Concert last December. This concert featured performances not only by the Stittsville Concert Band but also by various groups from the local area, with the event hosted by Max Keeping. More than $2,300 was raised for charity. A second Stittsville Christmas Festival Concert will be held this coming December, again with Max Keeping as the MC and host. Anyone interested in playing with the Stittsville Concert Band or its two smaller associated bands or anyone interested in booking one of the bands for an event should drop into the Stittsville Legion Hall on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. where the Stittsville Concert Band will be rehearsing on the fourth floor. If this is not a convenient time, you can also contact Christine Philipson at c.philipson@ sympatico.ca or phone 613-8311575.
