Anyone who likes rock ‘n roll music should make a note of Thursday, Aug. 4. That’s when Village Square park in Stittsville will be movin’ and groovin’ to the sounds of Eddy and the Stingrays, a group which bills itself as Canada’s No. 1 Rock & Roll Show and Dance Band. This will be the first of the city of Ottawa’s “Concert in the Park” series this year, with two more planned for the subsequent Thursdays. Eddy and the Stingrays has a wide repertoire of rock ‘n roll hits from the 1950’s and 1960’s such as Jailhouse Rock, Runaround Sue, Rock Around The Clock, Peppermint Twist, Pretty Woman, Kokomo, Whiter Shade of Pale … the list goes on and on. Eddy and the Stingrays have been together for 31 years now, having been formed in 1980. See CONCERTS, page 4

News SPECIAL TO THE NEWS An early morning fire has destroyed
a storage building at a property on Flewellyn Road west of Stanley’s Corners on Thursday, June 16.
A total of 13 Ottawa Fire Service fire vehicles and 34 firefighters responded to this building fire at 2:59 a.m. Upon arrival at the property at 7455 Flewellyn Road on the north side of the road just before Brownsville, firefighters discovered a 20
foot by 30 foot storage building situated behind a one storey home fully involved and collapsed to the ground. Estimated damage is $15,000 for the building and $5,000 for its contents. The cause has not been determined.
Stittsville pianist performing at Jazz Festival The Ottawa Jazz Festival has had over the years a special focus on Canadian talent, featuring about 300 Canadian artists in the lineup each year. This year, one of these is going to be Stittsville’s own Troy Dana. A year ago, Troy, now 17, switched piano teachers to learn more about jazz music. And what a learning experience he will be having this coming Sunday, June 26 as he will be performing on the OLG Stage at Confederation Park in the Ottawa Jazz Festival. Troy, who is a grade 11 honour roll student at Sacred Heart Catholic High School, will be performing as part of a trio, playing the piano while the other two trio members play the bass and the drums respectively. All three are students of
Yves Laroche and will be performing in a 3 p.m. segment of the Jazz Festival’s Youth Series called “The Art of the Jazz Piano Trio.” Troy himself has been taking piano lessons since he was six, coming from a musical family in which both his grandfather and his father are piano players. He has played in public on numerous occasions including talent shows at Sacred Heart, at various recitals and at events for family and friends. This, though, is his first performance at the Ottawa Jazz Festival. He has trained under the Royal Conservatory of Music program and likes to play a wide range of music, from contemporary to modern to pop to classical to jazz. Troy, the son of Phil and Judy Dana of Stittsville, also has started to teach piano himself on a part-time
Park back in 1980. It has evolved over the past three decades into one of the area’s most popular musical events of the summer. It has grown over the years, attracting such international names as Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Herb Ellis, Wynton Marsalis and Milt Jackson. Diana Krall, D.D. Jackson and Dave Douglas are among those who performed at the Festival while they were still up-and-coming artists and not the well-known recording artists that they have become. Among this year’s headliners are Elvis Costello and k.d. lang. The Festival has been helped by the rising popularity of jazz in today’s society, especially its increasing appeal to a younger audience. The Festival attracted 262,000 fans in 2009 including both tourists and local residents.

A Stittsville District Lions Club member has received the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Ivan Warner, who became a Lion in 1987 in Pembroke and transferred to the Stittsville Club a year later, was presented with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award at the Lions Club’s annual installation night last Saturday, June 18. From page 1 They are known for the showmanship, chorography and comedic flair, playing tunes made famous by such legends as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, the Beach Boys and the Beatles. Renowned for their vocals and their musicianship, they perform doo-wop, tear jerkers and rock ‘n roll standards. They also cover other musical styles such as the 1970’s classic rock tunes. Eddy and the Stingrays have played as far afield as Georgian, Massachusetts and Alberta. They have played with such stars as Chubby Checker, the Five Man Electrical Band and Trooper. The group has produced four CD’s including its latest, “Alive ‘n Jivin’,” a CD featuring music from live shows from late 2007. Eddy and the Stingrays is comprised of Eddy “Fingers” Fontana who does lead vocals and lead guitar; Frankie California, who plays bass guitar and backs the vocals; Buddy Love who plays the guitar and does lead and backing vocals; and Tommy Schnare, the drummer, who also does lead and backing vocals. This Eddy and the Stingrays concert at Village Square will be held on Thursday, Aug. 4 starting at 7 p.m. As in previous years, there will be a youth BBQ fundraiser at 6 p.m. Admission is free but donations for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) will be accepted. This “Concert in the Park” series is presented by the city of Ottawa thanks to financial sponsorship provided by Waste Management, The Mick Armitage Band will be featured in the second “Concert in the Park” on Thursday,
Aug. 11, also starting at 7 p.m. and again free. The Mick Armitage Band plays top 40 rock ‘n roll classics as well as rhythm and blues tunes and some country music. Among the recording stars whose music is played by the Mick Armitage Band are Rod Stewart, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Eagles, chuck Berry, Righteous Brothers, Fats Domino, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger. This free “Concert in the Park” series will wrap up on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. with a performance by Degenerate Highway, a hard hitting, modern day classic rock band that hails from Stittsville. This band has appeared on the Rogers 22 Daytime Show and will be coming off appearances at Club Soda in Montreal and El Mocambo in Toronto, both happening in July. Cathy Smithe, community relations manager with Waste Management, which is funding these concerts in partnership with the city of Ottawa, notes that it is nice that this concert series at Village Square park provides a place where local residents can go to hear great entertainment. “We’re really excited,” she says about this summer’s lineup of performers in Stittsville. She notes as well that Waste Management turned over $3,714 to CHEO at its recent telethon representing donations made at last year’s Waste Managementsponsored concerts. Those planning to attend these free concerts at Village Square park in Stittsville in August should take along a lawn chair or a blanket for seating.

Three students off to post-secondary education in the fall have received a financial boost from the Stittsville District Lions Club. The Lions Club presented $1,000 scholarships to these three students at its installation of new officers dinner at the Lions Hall in Stittsville last Saturday, June 18. The Lions Club publicizes its scholarship program and then awards three scholarships based on the applications received. Receiving these $1,000 scholarships this year were Aleethia Schwenger, Jes-
sica Barr and Erik Hiratsuka, all grade 12 students who are off to university this fall. Aleethia Schwenger, a student at Sacred Heart High School in Stittsville, will be attending Queens University in Kingston, taking computer science. Jessica Barr, a student at West Carleton Secondary School in Dunrobin, will also be attending Queens University in Kingston in a science program. She eventually hopes to be a pediatrician. Erik Hiratsuka, a student at Sacred Heart High School in Stittsville, plans to attend university either in Ottawa or Calgary. He eventually hopes to attend medical school.

Save a life - Be a donor
Imagine having the potential to save eight lives and enhance 75 more. It’s all possible by registering online as an organ and tissue donor. More than 1,500 Ontarians are on the list waiting for an organ transplant. Every three days, someone in this province dies while waiting for a life-saving transplant. Thousands more are waiting for a tissue transplant that could help enhance their lives. You can change that. All you have to do is take a few minutes out of your day to register as an organ and tissue donor online. Signed donor cards are no longer an acceptable option; the card may not be available when the information is needed and
your wishes will go unknown. The online registry stores your information in a Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care database and shares your decision to donate with the Trillium Gift of Life Network, Ontario’s organ and tissue donation agency. When you register, you ensure your decision to donate will be carried out in the event of your death – donation is only an option after all life-saving efforts have failed. Granted, death is a morbid subject – especially when it comes unexpectedly. But your organs and tissue won’t do any good for anyone when they’re six feet under. Yet another good reason to head for the lake Next week the fighting will start — the people who want to go off to the cottage for Canada Day against the people who want to stay in town and see Will and Kate. There are other subgroups, the people who want to stay in town to see the jazz festival and the people who want to stay in town for the fireworks, but that’s quite a different matter. You might think this upcoming battle is a battle of the sexes — the women wanting to see the royal couple and the men wanting to go fix the dock — but that’s old-fashioned stereotyped thinking. It’s more complicated than that. Back in April there were an awful lot of people, both male and female, who got up at five in the morning to watch the royal wedding on TV. Around that time, I remarked casually to a group of likeminded people that it was crazy and perhaps even un-Canadian to of the CBC to send Peter Mansbridge over to London

There was much leaping to the defence of the CBC and defending of the historical importance of the royal wedding. This, of course, doesn’t mean I was wrong. Anyway, the whole argument will now start up again. Some people will say that the way to go about being a good Canadian on Canada Day is to go to a lake and do something with a canoe or a tree. In doing so we are honouring our ancestors and our heritage. Others will argue that the Crown is part of what makes Canada special and that we
should salute it in person whenever the opportunity arises. Not all of these people are old codgers. Now, it’s true that the motorcade isn’t going to stop for them, nor will they be able to get close enough to salute, but it’s the thought that counts. It should also be noted that there is a rapidly growing number of Canadians whose heritage includes neither lakes and canoes nor royal couples from England. If you’re in that group, you might be very confused by it all, and should maybe just hang out at the jazz festival, where neither God Save the Queen nor O Canada is likely to be played.

It was a special night at the Stittsville Legion last Saturday, June 18. Not only did the branch’s annual honours and awards night take the form of a black-tie volunteer appreciation dinner, enjoyed in a musical environment, but also the awards presented included two of the highest available at the Stittsville Legion – its annual Legionnaire of the Year Award and a Royal Canadian Legion Meritorious Service Medal. Wow, what a night! This year, the bands that are sponsored by the Stittsville Legion, decided to host a volunteer appreciation dinner in conjunction with the annual honours and awards night. The dinner was prepared and served by Legion band members so that the hardworking Legion volunteers could just sit back and enjoy the dinner and accompanying music. The Legion band members did this as a sign of appreciation for the support and commitment which the Legion has given to the bands. During the dinner, the Legion ten piece band provided the background music. Their performance was followed later by the Main and Abbott
Dance Band, a real musical treat given their level of musical accomplishment. The presentation of the various Legion awards and honours were not overlooked. The Legionnaire of the Year, which is given annually at the branch to the Legion member deemed to have contributed the most to the branch over the past year, went to Ron Currie. This turned out to be quite an evening for the Curries as Ron’s wife Bev received the Royal Canadian Legion’s Meritorious Service Medal, one of the Legion’s most prestigious awards. She received this for her outstanding and dedicated service to the Stittsville Legion which has gone far beyond what is normally expected of a Legion member ever since she joined the branch in 1988. She was awarded a Royal Canadian Legion life membership in 2003 due to her extraordinary service to the branch and the Legion as a whole. A number of certificates of merit were presented, with the recipients being Irv Campbell, Miceal Powell, Norm Fortin, Pat Fitzpatrick and Thea Both. Certificates of appreciation presented went to Evelyn Leroux, Evelyn Fortin, Fred Appel, Aileen Appel, Bev
Currie, John Leroux, Barb Forbes, Barb Vant’Slot, Tom Albert, Clive Morris and the Stittsville Legion Band. Receiving service medals for exemplary service to the legion were Judy Campbell, Gord Davis, Anne Forbes, Mike Powell, Paul Richard and Barb Vant’Slot. Ten year service pines were presented to Dave Albert and Larry Romard. Medals and/or bars for service in Legion executive and leadership positions went to Norm Fortin, Corinne Drover, Dave Cashman, Cathy Cowan, Larry Romard, Pat Graham and Joe Cosman. Special mentions for their hard work on behalf of the Stittsville Legion branch went to Guy Bertrand, Shirley Munroe, Doug Munroe, Joe Cosman, Dave Cashman, Lee Dilkie, Carolyn MacLeod, Sharon LaHaise, Alison Albert, Bob Cleroux, Veronica Scott, Steve Vant’Slot, Corinne Drover, David Albert, Dave Poaps, Don lennard, Randy Reid, Shirley McNally and Vivian Haley. At the event, the Ladies’ Auxiliary presented a $1,000 donation to the Legion branch. Plaques of appreciation were presented to the Ladies’ Auxiliary, the Fifty Five Plus Club and the Survivors’ Club.

THE OTTAWA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION In October 2009, Rhea Ferguson’s father, Bill, was
diagnosed with esophageal gastric cancer at age 59. After successfully undergoing treatment at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, the family received some devastating news – the cancer was back, and this time, it was inoperable. Ferguson also knows more about the need for cancer research than the average person. She recently completed her Master’s degree in cancer epidemiology at McGill University, has worked with cancer researcher Dr. John Bell at The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and is currently working as a database manager for the Hospital’s ovarian cancer bank. “Cancer research has always been a big passion for me,” said the 26-year-old Ottawa native. “There’s a history of cancer in my family. I lost all my grandparents to it.”
Ferguson, who is riding as a member of the Cancer Trailblazers, the OHRI Cancer Centre team, said she reached her fundraising goal of $1,500 in just two weeks. “People are so generous,” she said. “Everyone knows someone who is affected by the disease. “It would be amazing to have another treatment option that is… not so hard on the body,” she said. “The research needs to continue.” With her father’s health rapidly declining, she said she will be thinking about him when she does the ride on Sept. 10. “I’m hoping to be able to tell him about it,” she said. But now they have something else in common – they are all featured in the “Portraits of Cancer” exhibit now on display at the Art Mad gallery at the Stittsville Shopping Centre on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville. It’s a exhibit featuring a series of portraits done by one of them, Salena Rich-
ard of Richmond, who discovered that her portrait artwork was therapeutic as she battled her way through her cancer. So, she put out the call for portrait candidates other than herself and the response resulted in this series of eight portraits, done in graphite. What sets these portraits apart is Salena’s use of coloured pencil for a portion of each portrait, done in the colour associated with the cancer afflicting the person. See PORTRAITS, page 11
Looking for a way to make a difference, she learned about Ride the Rideau, a 100 km cycling fundraiser from Ottawa to Merrickville to support cancer research at The Ottawa Hospital, and immediately signed up. “It’s raising money for where I work, and it’s going to where my dad was treated,” she said. “It was a perfect fit.” Ferguson’s mother, Sheila, also got on board as a Ride the Rideau volunteer.

Compassion in the service of care, Jamie MacDougall and the Order of Canada
Jamie MacDougall is the founder and Director of The Ottawa Hospital’s Institute for Rehabilitation Research and Development. He grew up in Overbrook, a brisk run from the General Campus. He went to high school at Lisgar, beside City Hall. His commitment to Ottawa is obvious. It is his commitment to Canada’s Deaf and persons with disability that led to his investiture in the Oder of Canada, on May 27. “You immediately think of all the people that made it possible, especially those with disabilities who inspired me. It is validation for thousands of people,” says MacDougall of the honour. Deafness and disability is personal for MacDougall. His parents, Peter and Gladys, were both deaf. His daughter, Paige, suffered a serious head injury at age 17, bringing his awareness of disabilities even closer to home. “People with disabilities have greater potential than we realize,” says MacDougall. “They have to overcome a lot of stereotypes…Just like everyone else, they aspire to realize their full potential.” Rusty Wendt, the head Carleton University’s Department of Psychology, understood this calling early on, convincing McDougall to take a summer job working with deaf parents seeking better means to communicate with their hearing children.
MacDougall left Carleton for McGill, getting his Masters and PhD in Clinical Psychology, studying the psychological impact of sensory deprivation and the link between deafness and literacy. Moving to Newfoundland’s Memorial University, he studied the impact of resettlement on cognitive development in children. From there, he went on to Rochester New York’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf. Then, back to McGill, where he spent 40 years teaching in the area of deafness and disability, and lead the Mackay Centre for Deaf and Disabled Children.

His research is rooted in the everyday challenges faced by the Deaf and persons with disability. “Whether its children or adults,” says MacDougall, “I’ve been touched by the courage of extraordinary people.” Those people, in turn, have enabled valuable research. “The strength of clinically driven research is that it is both practical and sophisticated because of the problems it allows us to explore”. During one particularly complex case with a deaf Inuk in Nunavut who was said to have no language, MacDougall discovered the Inuit had their own sign language – Inuit Sign Language.

At the exhibit, Salena had an explanation of the various colours and their cancer meanings – white for bone cancer, orange for leukemia, lime green for lymphoma, pink for breast cancer, purple for all survivors, blue for colon cancer, and teal and pink for ovarian, cervical and uterine cancer. Each of the eight portraits in the exhibit also included a description of the type of cancer battled by the person or persons in the portrait as well as the outcome – for example, battle lost, cancer survivor, treatments going on or treatments finished. This exhibit is being held as a fundraiser for the Irving Greenberg Family Can-
cer Centre at the Queensway Carleton Hospital where Salena received her treatment and where she found all of the doctors and nurses so helpful. The proceeds from the sale of the portraits, which have all been sold, are being donated. In addition, donations will be accepted at the exhibit. I wish to convey some information to our community regarding the placement and use of basketball nets and similar equipment on the roads. Although I encourage outdoor activity and our youth to participate in all forms of recreation, leaving equipment on the road can be hazardous to drivers. I contacted our By-Law Department to inquire about nets being left on the road and was told this type of activity is actually prohibited in accordance with section 93(1) of the City’s Traffic and Parking Bylaw. The fine for this violation is $130. That being said, there is an Enforcement Policy that has been passed by Council, which allows children to play hockey, basketball and other sports on city streets, as long as they are not obstructing the flow of traffic and that the nets are removed from the street when not in use. By-Law’s enforcement procedure with respect to these complaints is to try and mediate a resolution between complainants and defendant, issuing fines is always done as a last resort only.

Paramedics were at Stittsville Public School on Wednesday, June 15. But they weren’t there for an emergency. They were there in a teaching role of sorts, delivering a paramedic awareness and student safety presentation throughout the day. The goal was to educate grade three students about the job that paramedics do in the community. In addition, the paramedics provided the students with information about bike helmet safety, playground safety, medication tips and basic first aid training. The paramedics involved in this day-long session were off duty and volunteered their time to help with this educational initiative. This initiative was a joint undertaking between the Professional Paramedic Association of Ottawa and the Ottawa Paramedic Service.

Mr. Sun showed up. So did Mr. Blue Sky, making for a wonderful June day, ideal for the first ever Richmond Village Art Club show at Memorial Park in Richmond last Saturday, June 18. Unfortunately, Mr. Wind also showed up, creating several moments of potential havoc at the tented city which had been set up to create sheltered exhibit space for the art on display. One tent, which nearly took off, which would have made it an airborne art show, was tied down to two adjacent trees to prevent a recurrence. But other than the windy conditions at times, the show had to be considered a great success, with tents filled with displays of
the work of artists set up across Memorial Park. Indeed, Coralie Bartley of the Richmond Village Art Club confessed that Memorial Park is larger than it looks and there was space for even more tents and artists’ exhibits. Oh, well, knowledge for next time. And the next time may come as early as September’s Richmond Fair time as the Art Club is thinking of perhaps staging another art show at Memorial Park on Fair weekend. The Richmond Village Art Club had a good representation of its artist members participating in the show. In addition, artists from other groups such as the Ottawa West Arts Association were invited to participate and some did, such as Vera van Baaren of Stittsville.
The Richmond Village Art Club not only gained exposure from this show, its first ever, but also gained expressions of interest from several new members. This art show was the latest project of the new Richmond Village Art Club. The Club has held a meet and greet at the Richmond branch of the Ottawa Public Library. It has had members’ works on display at the Richmond library branch and Club member Les Bartley has his work on display at the North Gower library branch this month. Club members also helped judge a recent environmental poster contest held by the Richmond Village AssociaJohn Curry photo tion. The setting was different but the enthusiasm, emotion and passion were the same as this year’s Relay For Life to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society to help fight cancer was held at Walter Baker Park in Kanata rather than at the track at Sacred Heart High School in Stittsville where the event had been held up until now. “You really are saving lives,” CTV personality Michael O’Byrne, the event’s honourary chair, said at the opening ceremony on Friday, June 17 at 7 p.m. “You really are making a difference,” he told the walkers as they lined up with their teams in the warm, sunny weather. He told the 600 participants that they would be raising about $200,000 in the 12 hour overnight event this year, part of the over one million dollars that will be raised by the three recent Relay For Life events in the Ottawa area this year – in Nepean, in Orleans and this one for Ottawa West. There was also another one that was held in Edwards in south Ottawa in early May. The actual Relay was preceded by the traditional Survivors’ Victory Lap in which yellow shirted survivors walked together around a shortened route around much of the tented city that had grown up, with teams setting up their temporary shelters for the night ahead. As the survivors made their way around on their Victory Lap, Relay participants and volunteers lined the route and kept up a steady round of applause and cheers for the passing survivors. It was then time for the team parade, with each team, many displaying their name banners such as Nancy’s Crew for the Cure, Moms 4 Life, Team Awesome, Team Opa, Team Mission Possible, Stittsville United Church and Stittsville District Lions Club, made a ceremonial lap around the pathway ringing the pond, the pathway that was to be their route for the next 12 hours, until 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 18. As each team passed the start line, Michael O’Byrne announced its name as the Ottawa West Relay For Life 2011 got underway. Once the team parade lap was completed, one or more team members continued on the track as the teams each set up a rotation to always have someone on the pathway during the Relay. The loud, rousing music that

blared from the speakers set up at the band shell located on a stub of land jutting out into the pond, gave way to a performance by the Main & Abbott Band from Stittsville. As darkness settled onto the site, the emotional luminary ceremony took place at 10 p.m. with the luminaries – paper bags with a candle inside which, when lit, glowed in memory of a particular person who had battled cancer – being lit as they lined both sides of the pathway on the south side of the pond. With the temporary lighting that lit up the pathway turned off for the moment, bagpiper Gordon Hagar slowly walked around the pathway, playing as all those involved in the Relay For Life stood assembled near the start line, watching and no doubt thinking in this moment of quiet except for the bagpiper and the sound of the water falling from the fountain in the middle of the pond about loved ones who had fought cancer. Special solo luminaries were lit to remember those who had lost the battle to cancer, those who give care to those who battle cancer and for those who are survivors of cancer. Survivors each placed a luminary on a table near the band shell. A minute of silence was observed to remember loved ones lost to cancer. At 10:25 p.m., following this luminary ceremony, the walk resumed as the wee hours of the night approached and the Relay For Life carried on. As the morning dawned, another warm, sunny day, walkers were still moving around the pathway, perhaps not with quite as much spring in their steps but certainly with just as much determination and resolve. Some walked in pairs, arm in arm, while others walked side by side, keeping each other company. The rousing music that had played throughout the night continued. And then, suddenly, it was 7 a.m. and the Ottawa West Relay For Life 2011 was over. Volunteers were picking up the signs that had been erected along the route or had identified the location of particular luminaries. Team members were or had taken down their tents and were packing up their belongings, ready to go home after an emotional and exhausting night of walking to raise funds to battle cancer. Another success – another memorable event – another nail in the coffin of cancer. Relay For Life 2011.

Waste Management of Canada Corporation Environmental Assessment for a New Landfill Footprint at the West Carleton Environmental Centre Existing Conditions & Evaluation Criteria Available July 4th The Project Waste Management of Canada Corporation (WM) is undertaking an Environmental Assessment (EA) seeking approval for a new landfill footprint at the existing Ottawa Waste Management Facility (Ottawa WMF). The new landfill footprint will be one component of the proposed West Carleton Environmental Centre (WCEC), an integrated waste management facility that will include: • A new landfill footprint for disposal of residual waste materials; • Waste diversion and recycling operations; • Composting operations; • Renewable energy facilities; and, • Recreational lands for community uses. The Environmental Assessment The new landfill footprint is the only component of the WCEC that requires EA approval under the Environmental Assessment Act (EAA). The proposed location of the WCEC and the new landfill footprint component is within the City of Ottawa in the area shown on the adjacent map. The purpose of the EA is to study the potential environmental effects (positive or negative) of the proposed new landfill footprint. Key components of an EA include consultation with government agencies and the public; consideration and evaluation of alternatives; and, the management of potential environmental effects. Conducting an EA promotes good environmental planning before decisions are made about a proposal. Get Involved In Phase I and Phase II of the EA Process, the public was consulted regarding existing conditions, evaluation methodology, and evaluation criteria and indicators. The following reports will be available for public review beginning July 4th: • Existing Conditions and • Evaluation Methodology, Criteria, and Indicators. These reports can be accessed in two ways: • Electronic versions are available under the “Resources” tab on the project website (http://wcec.wm.com) and • A hard copy version is available for in-person viewing at the WM Ottawa Hauling Office – 254 Westbrook Road. Those wanting to review the materials in person are asked to contact one of the individuals noted below to arrange for a time to view the materials. Open Houses will be scheduled to take place in September to provide a summary of the existing environmental conditions; present the methodology for the comparative evaluation of the proposed alternative new landfill footprints; and to identify the preferred new landfill footprint. Notification of specific dates, times and locations for the Open Houses will be provided to the public through advertisement, direct mail, and email, as done previously for other Open Houses in the EA Process. Guys and dolls go together well. Just recall the 1950 Broadway musical and the 1955 movie of the same name which starred Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons and Frank Sinatra. But quilts and dolls also go together well. Just ask anyone who was at the ninth annual outdoor quilt show at The Country Quilter on McBean Street in Richmond last Saturday, June 18. The quilts were beautiful and plentiful. The dolls, provided by members of the All Dolled Up Ottawa Doll Club, were equally beautiful as they populated a large display table set up amid the quilts which were on display throughout the rear yard. These dolls made by members of the All Dolled Up Ottawa Doll Club are whimsical and creative dolls, made out of fabric but with hard interiors so that they keep their form. And what forms they have! Whereas older dolls usually featured painted and largely expressionless faces, these new doll creations by club members have unique and expressive faces, elaborate costumes for the most part and sometimes even some props like a telephone table or a Grand Canyon cliff. Getting the facial expressions right and achieving the proper body proportions for the dolls are two of the challenges faced by these doll makers. Some of the Club’s 45 members make these dolls to sell but
others just make them for their own enjoyment and collections. Some of the dolls are made thanks to special projects that the Club members undertake such as the recent National Geographic Page 75 Challenge. This is where a photo from page 75 of one of various National Geographic issues is used as inspiration for a doll creation. In the case of the All Dolled Up Ottawa Doll Club, this National Geographic Page 75 Challenge resulted in such diverse creations as a pigmy doll wearing only a grass skirt and a more elaborate one of a lady high stepping on the edge of the Grand Canyon. Both were inspired by National Geographic Page 75 photos but the doll creations resulted only after some research or thinking about the subjects of the photographs. There are patterns available for the making of these fabric dolls but a doll maker can have a unique vision and come up with an original design. Making such a doll usually involves some research, the design work and then the actual creation of the doll, including its costume. The purpose of the All Dolled Up Ottawa Doll Club is to share the joy and love of doll making and collecting dolls and to bring this enjoyment not only to Club members but also to the community at large through exhibits, workshops and programs. She’s a school council veteran. Now she’s going to lead it. Sacred Heart grade 11 student Lindsay Kavanagh has served on student council since grade eight. For the coming 2011-2012 school year, she will be stepping up to lead the student council
as she has been selected as the school’s head girl. Indeed, it was her experience on school council that gave her the incentive to run for the position of head girl. She had seen others run school council over the years and has seen what works and what does not work. Now she will be able to use this experience in leading the school
council over the coming school year. Lindsay admits that she loves leading initiatives and talking to fellow students. One of her goals as head girl is to enhance the spirit in the school by enhancing the school’s traditional spirit events like the reindeer hunt while adding some new spirit days, probably dress up days. But her whole goal is to ensure that school is fun for the

students. “I think high school deserves to be fun,” she says. She believes that next year’s s c h o o l council, which has at least Lindsay Kavanagh three representatives from each grade level, will be a good one. Lindsay is a strong advocate for the school council, noting that no school-wide events would happen if there were no school council. “School council attempts to bring the school together,” she says. “That’s what we try to do.” School council has not been and will not be Lindsay’s only focus, even though she clearly states that her role as head girl will be her top priority for the coming school year. She plays basketball, both for the school as well as outside of school. She also plays touch football for Sacred Heart, something she has done since grade eight. She admits that she likes the sport and feels that playing for the school team keeps her involved in school life. Besides playing for Sacred
Heart’s basketball team, Lindsay plays for the Ottawa Capitals in the JUEL of Ontario League which is the provincial under 19 junior women’s elite basketball league. Indeed, she has played basketball since about grade three and her goal is to play basketball at university. Several universities are already talking to her about her basketball future. She plays centre or the post position, describing herself as the big kid in the middle of the key. Lindsay likes the high intensity and competition found in her high-level basketball. She admits to a love of winning but also acknowledges that lessons can be learned from losing. Lindsay was recently involved with other students of the school’s Expose team in organizing a lunchtime health fair at the school. It dealt with smoking awareness but also dealt with other health matters such as nutrition and exercise. This was the first time that such a comprehensive health fair was held at the school. In school, Lindsay enjoys her business and math courses the most and is looking at specializing in commerce and accounting at university. A graduate of St. Philip Catholic School in Richmond, Lindsay also works part-time at Karter’s Korner south of Stittsville.

It was like quilt heaven in the yard at The Country Quilter in Richmond on Saturday, June 18. The occasion was the ninth annual outdoor quilt show there, with quilts of varying sizes, colours and patterns hanging on clothesline-like ropes zigzagging through the rear yard of the McBean Street business. Over 125 quilts were expected to be displayed at this show which offers free admission to all who drop in to look around. Sunny, warm weather, albeit with a bit of a breeze, prevailed for this event which featured not
Guild quilts were on display, you had quilts like an African Sunrise pattern quilt done by Vikki Zulpo as well as a number of the Guild’s mystery quilt. No, this is not a pattern name. Rather, it stems from the Guild’s practice
of encouraging members to take part in making such a quilt. Its name stems from the procedure in which participating members are first told what material to purchase and then are told how to cut it up. However, it is
not until then that the pattern is provided to these quilters. So, although at the quilt show there were several mystery quilts on display which sported the same pattern, they all featured different colours.

Each quilt on display was identified, with information such as the quilt’s owner, the quilt’s creator and, for those made at The Country Quilter, the class in which the quilt was made. These class names in themselves were quite fascinating, some of them referring to the quilt pattern of the class and some just referring to the name of the group in the class. So, you had names like The Nutcracker, Knotty Girls, Tree of Life, City Lights, Big Block, Shop Challenge and Jelly Stars. And over in the area where the Richmond Area Quilters

Two ‘country girls’ from Stittsville off to Caucasian Challenge JOHN CURRY

From Budapest, Hungary to Yerevan, Armenia in two weeks. Challenging. Motoring 6000 kilometers over a variety of road conditions through ten countries. Awesome. Doing it as the only all-Canadian team, a pair of women who grew up in Stittsville. Amazing. And helping out two local charities in the process. Priceless. And you can be a part of it all by attending or donating to a silent auction fundraiser that is being held right here in Stittsville on Friday, July 15. Or, for those who are able, you can become a team sponsor and have your logo emblazoned on the vehicle that will carry Sheila Hutchison and Suzanne Smith over the route of this annual Caucasian Challenge, proclaimed as one of the great adventure races of the world. Sheila Hutchison and Suzanne Smith, both of whom grew up in Goulbourn just south of Stittsville and who attended school together and have remained lifelong friends and travelling companions, have entered this year’s Caucasian Challenge. This car rally places emphasis on discovery and having a great
time instead of setting any land speed records. There is a certain distance to travel each and every day but as long as it is done by day’s end, things are fine. The car rally itself benefits half a dozen international charities through the ten countries visited but Sheila and Suzanne, who have named themselves the Canadian Cougars Team, will be raising funds for two charities here in Canada as well, one being the Ottawa Humane Society due to their love of animals and wildlife and the other being the Canadian Breast Cancer Society. The Canadian Cougars are, in fact, the first all female, all Canadian team to participate in this rally. Initially there were four ladies going to participate on the team but two decided to drop out, leaving only Sheila and Suzanne as one of the expected 50 teams competing in the rally this year. They named their team the Canadian Cougars for its double-edged meaning – the cougar is the only Canadian wild cat and both Sheila and Suzanne are in their 40’s (just barely, they point out), qualifying them for the cougar moniker frequently assigned to women of that age. Both Sheila and Suzanne
love to travel and indeed are just now returning from a trip to Scotland where they viewed the architecture and toured the country, learning about its history. They have also travelled to, among other places, Australia, New Zealand, Cuba, Costa Rica, the Caribbean islands, parts of Africa but never to the parts of Europe and Asia covered by this rally. The rally will be taking Sheila and Suzanne on every possible type of road and maybe even some non-roads – modern highways, gravel roads, mud tracks, mountain passes, desert roads – certainly it will not be a boring drive. “We will be passing through every terrain you can imagine,” says Sheila Hutchison In addition, the rally will feature geocaching where the rally participants will be using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) devices to seek out certain locations and features along the route. “It’s like a modern day treasure hunt,” Sheila Hutchison says in describing this feature of the race, noting that the geocaching may even take the rally participants totally off-road into fields. get in some geocaching practice before they head to the Caucasian Challenge. Sheila and Suzanne, like all the teams, will be on their own if their vehicle, which they are renting for the rally, breaks down. But thanks to their many travels together all around the world, not as typical tourists but as visitors wanting to see the real face of countries visited, they feel that they can handle whatever might happen. “We’re resourceful, put it that way,” Sheila says, readily admitting that she and Suzanne can change tires and will be armed with information about services available in the local towns through which they will be passing. Cell phone coverage will apparently be fairly extensive and in fact they are hoping to have a satellite phone for the rally. They will also be keeping in touch with family and friends through a blog and the internet. Sheila and Suzanne both enjoy meeting people and also both have a love of animals and wildlife. That’s why much of their travel sees them learn about native animals like the Tasmanian devils in Australia and the mongoose in Africa. “We’re country girls from
Stittsville,” Sheila explains, recounting how both she and Suzanne grew up riding horses, looking after numerous pets and saving wildlife like raccoons. That’s why they now combine their love of animals with their travel when they can and that’s why the Ottawa Humane Society is one of the charities towards which they are directing some of their fundraising. Sheila works in the health care field while Suzanne works in the federal government. Both have raised families but are now single and free to enjoy their passion for travel. “Once you start, you cannot stop,” Sheila says about the duo’s travelling, saying that meeting new people becomes an addiction. But as a pair of women travelling, they are careful and have become street-wise in foreign countries. “You have to be constantly aware,” Sheila says. They expect that navigating the route will be a challenge, much more so than the actual driving. In addition, they are expecting that there might be some language problems as they travel through so many different countries. See Caucasian, page 25
From page 24 They will have camping equipment including a stove and tent with them and expect no problem accessing local food supplies. In fact, Suzanne is quite optimistic about the rally, saying that if she and Sheila can complete this rally and travel through all these countries in two weeks, they can probably do anything. “We’re going to have to survive,” Sheila says, noting that she and Suzanne probably will have to travel anywhere from 400 to 600 kilometers a day, roughly six hours a day in the vehicle. Covering ten countries in two weeks, the Caucasian Challenge route will include scenic off-the-beaten-path roads as well as the geocaching challenges. Leaving Budapest, Hungary on Aug. 15, rally participants will head south into Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania before leaving the Balkans and continuing through Greece. Crossing the Bosporus Channel, rally participants will travel the full length of Turkey. Entering Georgia, they will drive around the high peaks in the Caucasus Mountains before heading south to Nagorno-Karabakh and the finish line at Yerevan, Armenia on Aug. 31. Charity is an important part of this Caucasian Challenge rally. A school or orphanage in Armenia or Nagorno-Karabakh is usually chosen as the recipient
of various donations which the rally participants hand over themselves while visiting the institution. Last year the Zatik orphanage on the outskirts of Yerevan, Armenia was supported, with donations for the 70 orphans there including sporting goods, computers, toys and clothing. To help with expenses related to this rally, Sheila and Suzanne are holding a fundraising silent auction at the Stittsville Legion Hall on Friday, July 15. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Donations of items for this silent auction would be appreciated. In addition, corporate sponsors are being sought. This can include a monetary donation in return for a logo on the Canadian Cougars vehicle or could be items such as sporting goods, toys, clothing or electronics that could be donated to the orphanage or school being supported by this year’s rally. Independent Grocer in Stittsville. There will also be a registration session on Tuesday, June 28 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Richmond arena in Richmond. This is an opportunity to become involved in the inaugural season for this new girls’ hockey organization in Goulbourn whose territory includes Stittsville, Richmond and Munster. This inaugural season will involve house league division teams playing in
the Metro Ottawa house league against teams in Nepean, Gloucester and Kanata. As the organization grows and develops, it will be adding a competitive level program. The free event is in Kanata all week, buying gold, silver, antiques and collectibles. One visitor I spoke with yesterday said, “It’s unbelievable, I brought in some old coins that had been in a little cigar box for years and some old herringbone necklaces—in less than fifteen minutes I left with a check for $700. That stuff has been in my jewelr y box and dresser for at least 20 years.” Another gentleman brought in an old Fender guitar his father had bought years ago. The man said,
