The formal tree lighting, which will include a blessing, will take place at 7 p.m. It is being planned as a community

The Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville now has three Paul Harris Fellows. This high honour was bestowed on members Carolyn Clark, Steve Hunter and Leo Maiorino at a special presentation at the Club’s Uganda Library Gala on Thursday evening, Nov. 10. A Paul Harris Fellow award is presented by a Rotary Club to individuals who meet high professional and personal standards as exemplified by Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary. Paul Harris Fellow awards can be presented to both Club members as well as non-members. A Paul Harris Fellow receives a special certificate as well as a gold pin. Paul Harris was a Chicago attorney who founded Rotary in 1905. The Rotary organization has now grown to over one million members worldwide. Mr. Harris’ initial goal in creating the Rotary Club was to create an organization of professional and businessmen men for friendship and fellowship. However, he then realized that Rotary needed a greater purpose and in 1907 the Chicago Rotary Club initiated its first public service project, the construction of public washrooms in Chicago. This step transformed Rotary into the world’s first service club. The motto of Rotary is “Service Above Self. Rotary Clubs today focus on both local community and international service projects.

It’s called the Workshop Basket. It’s a man-oriented gift basket valued at a whopping $250. Just imagine what good stuff is in there. And it’s joined by its sister gift baskets – the Kitchen Basket, valued at $65; the Harvest Basket, also valued at $65; and the Spa Basket, valued at $75. All four of these gift baskets are going to be given away in a draw at this Saturday’s second annual Christmas bazaar hosted by the ladies of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL at Holy Spirit Parish in Stittsville. Tickets on the draw have been sold at the church in recent weeks and will be on sale as well at the bazaar itself, with the draw being held at the 3 p.m. conclusion of the bazaar. These gift baskets were all assembled by CWL member Marlene Lahey. CWL members helped out by donating some of the items included while other items were purchased. But there’s more to this Saturday’s Christmas bazaar than just the draw for these gift baskets. There will be crafts galore at the bazaar thanks to the efforts of the CWL ladies who have been making them since the summer. There will also be a variety of other items such as painted skates, knitted goods and wreaths. Fifth Avenue Jewelry will also be on hand. For the first time at Holy Spirit Parish, the “Ten Thousand Villages” store will have a presence, selling crafts from around the world. And don’t forget that the CWL’s now famous Christmas pudding, which sold out in minutes at last year’s inaugural bazaar, will be on sale again this year. And there will be more of it as the CWL bakers tripled the amount of pudding cooked. But given the popularity of this pudding last year, with its closely guarded secret recipe, it might be a good idea to get there early if you want to ensure that you get some of this oh-so-good Christ-
mas pudding. Just a word to the wise! Remember, the doors open at Holy Spirit Church’s parish hall at 9:30 a.m. The Christmas bazaar will also have its popular tea room back again this year. And there will be an expanded bake table as well. Proceeds from this bazaar will go to the Holy Spirit CWL and the charities that it supports. This Christmas bazaar will be held this Saturday, Nov. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Holy Spirit parish hall on Shea Road in Stittsville, just south of Abbott Street. Everyone is invited to drop by and enjoy the event.

Editor: The Sow Good Sale was SO good! Community Bible Church in Stittsville is delighted to announce that The Sow Good Sale last Saturday was very well received by the community. We had a great response from our shoppers, our volunteers had fun and our organizers are already thinking about how to make next year’s Sow Good Sale even better! It is exciting to announce that the sale raised just over $10,000 – with all profits flowing directly to the Seje (pronounced Say-Jay) partnership. The people of Stittsville and area have now fully funded the first structure of the planned school for orphans in Seje, Kenya and have helped to
start to address the scarcity of safe accessible water for all the villagers. Yay God! And thank you! Also thanks to our tireless crafters and volunteers. And thanks too to our corporate sponsors who helped us keep our expenses ultra low: Walmart (Kanata), Stittsville Home Building Centre, Laura’s Independent (Kanata), Lowes (Kanata) and Ottawa Windows & Doors. And last but certainly not least, thanks to the Stittsville News for its most excellent article and photo – quite a few of our John Brummell photo guests mentioned having seen it as they Ulf Viney holds a pie at The Sow came in the doors at the sale. Big jackpot playing slots SPECIAL TO THE NEWS There are over 1,800 slot machines at the Casino Lac-Leamy. Just imagine the odds of just playing one of them that is going to pay off. And to play one that is going to pay off big time, well, the odds there
are phenomenal. But that is what happened to Bill Brownlee of Stittsville last weekend. And he not only won big, he won as big as you can get. His $1,861,414.58 in jackpot winnings was the largest payoff in the history
of Casino Lac-Leamy. Not a bad return from a five dollar slot machine. But when the slot machine lights start flashing and bells start ringing, you know that you are a winner. But $1.8 million plus! Now that’s unbelievable.

After graduation, he was involved with the development of two new musicals and performed in a production called “Forever Plaid” this past summer. His skills as an actor and a puppeteer landed him the role with the national tour of ImaginOcean. John Tartaglia, who is its creator and producer, has been a source of inspiration over the years for Ben as he has pursued his interest in puppetry. Indeed, Ben says it is a dream come true to work on John Tartaglia’s production. The tour will be wrapping up in Tennessee, after which it will be off to Singapore…..In the National Capital Amateur

Making a difference
People can and do make a difference. The Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville is an example of this. Although a relatively small group, this Rotary Club is involved with a project that will be life changing for people in the community of Luweero in Uganda. The Rotary Club has already shipped off a container filled with 15,000 books plus other supplies such as sporting items and computers and in January, the Club will be establishing a community library in the Ugandan community. Bringing books and an enhanced opportunity for literacy to those in that community, particularly its youth, means life-altering change will happen there. And all thanks to the efforts of the Rotary Club of Ot-
tawa – Stittsville and its partner in the project, the Maama Watali organization of Uganda. Others in our community are also making a difference. The Community Bible Church held a successful bazaar last Saturday, all to help support sustainable development for the people of Seje in Kenya. The Stittsville United Church is now raising funds, including holding a spaghetti supper this coming Friday evening, so that members of its congregation, including youth, can travel to Nicaragua during March Break 2012 to help with a community development project there. Dr. Cathy Deschenes and registered dental hygienist Louise Smith of the Deschenes Poitras Dental Centre in Stittsville has
just returned from Kenya where they provided two weeks of dental care working under the auspices of an organization called Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps (RAMV). And more is happening all the time. The Stittsville United Church has a history of helping refugees. Holy Spirit Catholic Parish is now raising funds for a refugee family that it is sponsoring. These are but some of the examples of how residents, churches and organizations in Stittsville are making a difference, not just here in our community but elsewhere in the world. This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many others, both by individuals acting themselves and by groups and organizations.

More winter fun: Occupy Winterlude It was inevitable that official Ottawa would tire of the occupation of Confederation Park by protesters linked with the world-wide Occupy Wall Street movement. A number of reasons have been cited but the official one is that that the National Capital Commission has to began planning for Winterlude and that there is no space in the capital’s winter festival for people in tents. Typically short-sighted, the NCC, in deciding to part company with the Occupy Ottawa protesters, has failed to recognize the potential value in keeping Occupy Ottawa around. There was no need to play the heavy and risk all that bad publicity. The NCC’s goals could have been met without quarreling simply by letting Occupy Ottawa stay and building Winterlude around it. Let’s consider: Do the rest of us really need Confederation Park right now? It’s nice in the spring and fall for people to
CHARLES GORDON grab a coffee on a park bench, great in the summer when the jazz festival is around, but in the winter? Not really. It’s a short-cut to and from the Rideau Centre. Those park benches get cold. So Occupy Ottawa has not really inconvenienced anybody. The inconvenience arrives with Winterlude when the park is suddenly alive with the sound of chisels and the creation of ice sculptures begins. That’s what the NCC is worried about -- the Occupy people getting in the way of the sculptors and the tourists and the corporate sponsors and whatnot. But listen: the tourists would be delighted to be around real, live Occupiers; what exciting stories they could bring home. The corporate sponsors have fancy hotel suites they can
hang out in if the sight of tents gets them down. But the most important reason for keeping Occupy Ottawa in the park is that ice sculpture is just made for political protest. Imagine the park if the Occupiers were allowed to participate in the ice sculpting. Instead of all those familiar loons and polar bears and ornate things that look like chandeliers, we’d be seeing ice sculpture with real relevance. Imagine seeing evil bankers carved in ice, their hearts appropriately cold. Imagine the collapse of capitalism in a tableau glistening in the sunshine. Imagine the challenge of creating a fair taxation system out of ice. These protesters have already demonstrated their creativity in many ways. Who’s to say they wouldn’t be up to this challenge? In fact, it almost seems as if they have been thinking along those lines. Here’s a spokesman for Occupy Ottawa quoted last week in response to the NCC’s stated need
to have the park back. “We know that there are events that are planned in future and we will work with the NCC to ensure that those events can be attended by the general public and we can have a nice time together.” Doesn’t it sound as if he can’t wait to get in there and carve some ice — perhaps a statue of Europe, melting, or a bust of Bernard Madoff. It is sad that he and his friends won’t get the chance. Ottawa has a proud history of turmoil just waiting to be immortalized in ice. Knives and various famous gestures by Pierre Elliott Trudeau. These guys in tents were just the ones to bring some political relevance to Winterlude. But they have to somewhere else. Say, how about LeBreton Flats? There’s a space that no one seems to need. . On the bright side, a lowered visibility for the Occupy folks may not be all bad. The movement may be running out of steam and risks becoming boring. The possibility of confrontation with the authorities can bring out the rock throwers in hoodies, which won’t help the movement. It might be time to regroup and change tactics. Still, it’s a shame to miss Winterlude.

Extractions, lineups, lots of demand in Kenya
JOHN CURRY
john.curry@metroland.com
arrival of the Canadian medical team via radio or via word of mouth and up to two days before the local clinic was set up, residents from afar would start walking to the location. There were at least a couple of hundred lined up the first thing in the morning and the lineups only got longer as the day progressed. With regard to dentistry, doing fillings and cleanings were ruled out. The first priority was to relive pain and so work was focussed on those suffering the most. This included abscesses, broken teeth and mouth infections. It also involved lots of teeth extractions. Indeed, in the two weeks, Dr. Deschenes did over 200 teeth extractions, more than she would do at her practice here in Stittsville in a year. Dr. Deschenes points out that in Kenya, people actually die from tooth infections. Here in Canada, treatment prevents this. In Kenya, it is a different story.
In Kenya, there is a shortage of dentists, especially in the rural areas. Rural residents have to walk kilometers to get any medical treatment and so it usually does not happen unless there is a major problem. Teeth usually don’t qualify for this and so they decay and become infected. Dr. Deschenes and Ms. Smith saw about 50 or 60 patients a day at the clinics which were set up in three different villages over the course of two weeks. They saw patients of all ages but tried to see as many children as possible because, as Dr. Deschenes says, it is sad to see children in pain. They worked with a translator since English is not prevalent, although children are now learning the language in school. Indeed, the translators, who ranged in age from 18 to 25, were full of questions for Dr. Deschenes and Ms. Smith. See DENTAL, page 9

Over 200 tooth extractions in two weeks. Lineups of 500 or so people every day, waiting to receive care. So much to do and such a demand. And yet dentist Dr. Cathy Deschenes and registered dental hygienist Louise Smith of Stittsville’s Deschenes Poitras Dental Centre have come away from their two week work stay in Kenya feeling that they did make a difference. But they also acknowledge that there is a need for so much more to be done there. They were in Kenya in late September and early October as part of a team of medical, dental and optometry professionals working there under the auspices of an organization called Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps (RAMV). Ms. Smith said that she thinks that the team, which visited three remote communities, made a difference being there
but she points out that there is a need for much more. One thing is to educate the people about the importance of healthy teeth. Dr. Deschenes called the Kenya trip a life changing experience that for her has put everything in proper perspective, making her more appreciative of life in Canada and what Canadians have. She says that the team did a lot while in Kenya but only a little bit of what could be done there. Ms. Smith agrees, saying that while the team managed to achieve a lot, the demand is just so incredible that there is so much to do. But on the other hand, she found the work “rewarding” because the people there were so appreciative of anything and everything that the team did. Dr. Deschenes says that there were lineups of about 500 people on every day that their clinic was open with its doctors, dentists and optometrists. Residents heard about the

Scottish theme at meeting SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Scotland will be the theme of the November 19th meeting of the Goulbourn Township Historical Society. And it will be a meeting that will feature not only speech but also dance and refreshments including mince tarts, fudge, fruit cake, oatmeal squares and, hopefully date squares and shortbread. Now that’s a meeting that you want to be at. Roger Thomas, who spoke about 19th century conditions in Ireland as the guest speaker at the Historical Society’s October meeting, will be back again as guest
speaker with a Scottish theme to his information. The Royal Scottish Dance Society’s demonstration team will be in attendance to entertain with their Scottish dancing with its joyful enthusiasm and lilting music. This is the same group of dancers who performed for the Historical Society last year to rave reviews. The refreshments served at the meeting will have a Scottish flavour like mince tarts. This all happens this Saturday, Nov. 19 starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Stittsville Legion Hall on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville. Everything is free with everyone welcome. R0071124114

Holiday Bake Sale with a Little Twist! Hear ye, hear ye! Calling all bakers! This year is the 61th Anniversary of the Christmas Cheer Broadcast on 580 CFRA. It’s also the 21th Anniversary of the Christmas Cheer Breakfast at the Westin Hotel. Together, this partnership has been making the holiday season a little brighter for less fortunate people. Your donations to CHEER go directly to local charities including the Ottawa Food Bank, the Christmas Exchange and the Ottawa Senators’ Foundation to support their Christmas giving campaigns. In support of this year’s campaign, I would like to cordially invite you to participate in a Ward vs. Ward Holiday Bake Sale. Mayor Watson has issued a challenge to all wards and ward councillors, so we need your help. Here’s the deal, as each participating councillor will be asked to bring in holiday treats from the ward and sell them at the bake sale table, with all proceeds going to the Christmas Cheer Foundation, we would like to have area help. Anyone interested in some friendly competition and wanting to demonstrate that Stittsville boasts the best baking in Ottawa can contact my office to make arrangements. If you wish to submit items, please do so using disposable containers as they will not be returned. Here are the details of the Ward vs. Ward Holiday Bake Sale: • Monday, December 5th • 8am-1pm • Tables will be set up in the main lobby of City Hall, across from the info desk. In the interest of keeping food fresh, please bring your goodies to my ward office between Thursday December 1st and Saturday December 3rd (ward office hours are listed at the bottom of the column). I thank everyone ahead of time for their help and let’s show Ottawa why Stittsville is the best ward!
is in effect will be ticketed, even if it does not snow. On-street parking permit holders are exempt from winter overnight parking restrictions. For more information on winter overnight parking regulations and planned snow removal, visit ottawa.ca/winterparking or call 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401).
Paul Lindsay Pond beaver trapping halted Mayor Watson and I were pleased to announce on Thursday November 10th that the City of Ottawa will accelerate the development of its Wildlife Strategy. At the same time, the City will halt trapping activity in the Paul Lindsay Pond area. Staff has proposed that the Wildlife Strategy include a reevaluation of the City’s beaver management practices, including a development of a risk management evaluation process for responding to conflicts between beavers and infrastructure, such as culverts and storm water facilities. I am pleased that the City Manager has been able to act on suggestions to explore alternatives while realizing that flood control is a critical program for the ward. I am hopeful that we can find a way to protect residents from flooding and enhance our handling of wildlife at the same time. While even the most progressive experts in wildlife management acknowledge that lethal trapping of beavers is sometimes necessary to protect critical infrastructure and private property, the City recognises that advances in beaver management practices and technologies provide a range of alternatives to lethal trapping. The City recognizes that many of these alternatives are also more protective of aquatic and wetland ecosystems
The Event of the Holiday Season: Stittsville Parade of Lights Stittsville’s annual festive parade is just days away! The Parade of Lights, organized by the Stittsville Village Association, occurs on Saturday, November 26th and kicks off with the parade commencing at 7:00 p.m. starting at the school board premises. The parade will then proceed south along Stittsville Main Street to Carleton - Cathcart Street. As a result, Stittsville Main Street and all intersecting streets from Hazeldean Road to Carleton - Cathcart Street will be closed from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Dozens of floats featuring businesses, community organizations, associations and prominent members of the community will wind their way through the heart of the community along Stittsville Main Street. I look forward to seeing everyone come out and kick-off the holiday season with a wonderful parade.
Winter Overnight Parking Regulations in Effect November 15, 2011 to April 1, 2012 As we prepare for the winter months, the City of Ottawa is reminding residents that winter overnight parking regulations will be in effect from November 15, 2011 to April 1, 2012. These regulations ensure the City’s snow-clearing crews are able to keep Ottawa’s roads safe and clear for pedestrians, cyclists, public transit, and motorists. Your safety is the City of Ottawa’s top priority. The City enforces winter overnight parking restrictions between November 15 and April 1 when Environment Canada forecasts a snow accumulation of 7 cm or more. This includes any forecast for a range of snow of more than 7 cm, for example 5 to 10 cm. When winter parking restrictions are being enforced, vehicles are not allowed to park on any city street between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. These restrictions are in place to help the City clear the way for you. Vehicles parked on the street when a restriction
Carp Road Landfill (Dump) Expansion Proposal Garbage Odours If you are one of the thousands of people in Stittsville, Kanata and West Carleton who live and work within a few kilometres of a proposed new landfill on Carp Road, the potential for impacts from odours are of interest to you. In 2007, over 5000 odour complaints were made to the Ministry of Environment, because of the smell when the dump was in full operation. The smell was reported up to seven kilometres from the dump: from Kanata west to Stittsville to north of the Richardson Side Road. The dump is now closed but a new dump is being proposed. You are invited to attend a technical information session scheduled for November 16, 2011 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Waste Management offices, 254 Westbrook Road, (off Carp Rd. south of 417) Some of the questions to be covered will include: How are odours controlled past / present / future? Will enjoyment of your property, or your business, be affected? Will schools and outdoor recreation areas be affected? Will commuting and trips to the park be impacted? A Groundwater Technical Session will also take place on November 30, 2011, also from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at WMCC’s Ottawa Office. I encourage all who can attend to do so as this is an important and ongoing issue for Stittsville.

From page 7 They wondered how marriage worked in Canada, for instance, since in Kenya polygamy is prevalent and eight to ten children is the norm. They asked about the cold weather as well. Some in Kenya had never seen a white person before and were anxious to touch their skin and hair which are different from that found in Kenya. This was the first Canadian RAMV medical team to work in Kenya and Dr. Deschenes hopes that a door has now been opened for more regular visits by such Canadian medical teams. One thing which is not different between Kenya and Canada is the prevalence of cell phones. Dr. Deschenes says that many, many Kenyans have a cell phone as it is their only means of communication. Dr. Deschenes wants to edu-
cate Canadians about how lucky they are with their quality of life and how massive the needs are in other countries, even for services such as dental care which is so common in Canada. She would like to do school and other presentations to advance this concept. Indeed, she herself hopes to go to Guyana in northern South America in 2013 to do similar work. She hopes to take along her oldest daughter at that time to expose her to the needs of others in the world. Ms. Smith says that she would love to go back and help out again in Africa. “I found it a beautiful country,” she says, referring as much to the people as the countryside. However, she noted that while the people there are surviving, they are very limited in what they have in life.
as a volunteer in Central America in her youth and so she knew what was involved. Ms. Smith had always wanted to help out in a place like Kenya but a young family was her first priority. Now that her children are older, she was able to realize her dream for the first time with this trip to Kenya. The medical team took numerous hockey bags jammed with supplies. Nine of these bags were filled with dental supplies. The RAMV team received help from sponsors such as dental supply companies. A number of Stittsville businesses and residents also donated to the cause. Despite being independent for 46 years, Kenya has only 800 dentists in the country, serving a population of 40 million. There is only one full fledged dental school in the country, although another is being built. Dr. Deschenes says that a
RAMV medical team experience is open to anyone who wants to help out and who is looking for such an experience. She says that these medical teams always need support workers to help them. Anyone interested should check out the RAMV website at RAMV.ca.

Dental work in Kenya
Dr. Deschenes said that the people in Kenya would always be smiling, even if they were in pain or had no food. “They are content with not a lot,” she says in describing the people there, adding that she is now trying to teach her own children to be happy with less. After two weeks of intense work with the medical team, Dr. Deschenes and Ms. Smith enjoyed a brief two-day safari on which they toured a national park and saw much of the wildlife for which Africa is so famous, such as lions, giraffes, hippos, elephants and the like. It was a great way to relax and unwind before returning to Canada. Dr. Deschenes became involved with this RAMV Kenya mission when a friend of hers and fellow dentist Dr. Chantal Plant asked her if she would become involved. It was an easy answer for De. Deschenes since she had spent a month working
Antique knitting machine SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Sock it to me! This was Judy Carne’s famous phrase on Rowan and Martin’s comedy television show of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. It invariably led to her being doused with water or worse. But such a “sock it to me” phrase will have a totally different connotation at the upcoming meeting of the Yap & Yarn knitting circle at the Goulbourn Museum this coming Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. At this group’s regular meeting, special guest Mary Montgomery will be demonstrating her antique circular knitting
machine. So if you ever wondered how socks were made over a century ago, plan to drop in and see how they were done. “Sock it to me!” The Yap & Yarn knitting circle meets from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the third Sunday of the month from September through May at the Goulbourn Museum. The group is open to all age groups and skill levels and it’s free. Those interested should bring along a knitting project plus any knitting questions and be prepared for a fun afternoon of knitting. The Goulbourn Museum is located at 2064 Huntley Road at Stanley’s Corners, just south of Stittsville.

“Remember them.” “Honour them.” “Honour their sacrifice.” These are the words of Goulbourn Middle School teacher Karen Wiggins as she concluded her comments at the school’s Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, Nov. 11, urging the assembled students to take a private moment at some time to thank those who have served the country in wartime, especially those who have been involved in Canada’s “longest war,” the ten year engagement in Afghanistan. She reminded those at the assembly that the Afghanistan mission that is now wrapped up was Canada’s longest war, with 158 dead. She noted how Canada’s troops in Afghanistan made sacrifices not only in combat but in life, being away from their families. The names of the 158 Canadian soldiers who died in Afghanistan were posted around the walls of the gymnasium where the assembly was held. In addition, the pictures of these 158 soldiers were shown on a screen at the front of the gymnasium as the students, wearing poppies, quietly filed in to the gym prior to the beginning of the ceremony. At the beginning of the ceremony, Goulbourn Middle School teacher Mrs. Jennifer Sammon reminded the students that many of those who became soldiers, sailors and airmen in Canada’s World Wars and those who died were not much older than Goulbourn Middle School’s students of today, many with bright plans for the future that were put on hold. She urged the students to reflect on those who have gone to war to preserve Canada’s way of life and who paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.

From page 13 The Remembrance Day ceremony, MC’d by students Sydney Foster and Spencer Lee, included a sung version of “In Flanders Field” as well as student readings – one entitled “Remembrance Day” read by Harriet Wells and another about the “National War Memorial” read by Jack Rabb. Representatives from each class at the school laid wreaths of Remembrance on a table at the front of the gymnasium on which there were also three white crosses. The tabled was a sea of wreaths proclaiming “Lest We Forget” and featuring poppies of all shapes and sizes when the wreath laying ceremony ended. This was followed by The Last Post,
played on the trumpet by Mrs. Wiggins. After a moment of silence, bagpiper Jordan McConnell played “The Lament,” followed by Mrs. Wiggins playing “Reveille.” The playing of O Canada by the Goulbourn Middle School band, accompanied by the school choir, was later followed by the singing of “I Want To Teach The World To Sing” by the choir directed by teacher Mrs. Linda Crawford. The ceremony also featured a couple of videos – “A Pittance of Time” dealing with the traditional two minutes of silence observed on Remembrance Day, and “Highway of Heroes” about war dead from Afghanistan travelling along highway 401, Canada’s Highway of Heroes.

Students hand wreaths to Mr. and Mrs. Leger john.curry@metroland.com
Richard and Claire Leger of Stittsville and their son Marc, a sergeant with the Third Battalion of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry who died while serving in Afghanistan, all played major roles in Stittsville Public School’s Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, Nov. 11. During the ceremony’s wreath laying, Mr. and Mrs. Leger stood at the front of the assembled students and about 100 visiting parents in the school gymnasium where they received the wreaths made by each class and carried to the front by a pair of students. After receiving the wreaths, Mr. and Mrs. Leger placed them on display at the front of the stage in the gymnasium. Following the wreath laying ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Leger, flanked by the students of Mme. Moskos’ grade two students and Mme. Sheppard’s grade three students, joined them in the singing of “Teaching Peace.” Earlier in the ceremony, grade one students recited the poem “Do You Know Where I Find Peace?” while George Gonis’ grade five class presented the poem “Please Wear A Poppy.” This was followed by a combined song/poem presentation of John Lennon’s song “Imagine” combined with the poem “In Flanders fields,” done by the grade five students of Mme. Jackson/Mlle Catselis’ class. The playing of “The Last Post” followed by a moment of silence after which Reveille was played was part of the ceremony. Through all of this, a picture of Sergeant Leger was shown on a screen at the front of the gymnasium while his framed portrait was placed at the foot of a podium on the stage. In addition, his portrait, in military dress, was on the front of the program for this Remembrance Day ceremony. This was not all. MC and teacher George Gonis told those at the ceremony about a very special commemoration which has taken place regarding Sergeant Leger. Indeed, he has been the very first Canadian soldier ever to be chosen for the honour of having his portrait done by American artist Michael Reagan as part of his Fallen Soldier Project.

Mr. Gonis told how this Fallen Soldier Project involves portraits done by Mr. Reagan of soldiers who have died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Mr. Reagan, who has done over 10,000 celebrity portraits including numerous American presidents, does all of His Fallen Soldier Project portraits, now over 1,700, for free as a way of remembering their valour and giving back. Sergeant Leger’s portrait was featured in the Sept. 2009 issue of the magazine Canadian Military and the original portrait is now with his parents at their home here in Stittsville. A copy of the Canadian Military issue with the portrait featured in it is now in the display case next to Stittsville Public School’s Marc Leger Library. The photo on the front of the school’s Remembrance Day ceremony program was of the original portrait. For the ceremony, the gymnasium was adorned on its walls with poppies, wreaths and Remembrance artwork. A band of small poppies ran all around the walls of the gymnasium.

The event, which raised $2.7 million in just two years, has quickly grown to become the top cancer fundraiser in eastern Ontario. This year, more than 715 riders – from Starbucks baristas to CEOs of major corporations – took part in the event. The top fundraising team for the second year was the Brick Peddlers, led by event champion Robert Merkley of Merkley Supply Inc. “The overwhelming support that we have received from some of the biggest names in the Ottawa business community shows how crucial cancer research is,” said Tim Kluke, President and
CEO of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation. CEO of title sponsor Nordion Steve West, who also took part in the ride, said as a company, “Nordion is extremely proud to support Ride the Rideau as it continues to contribute to cancer research that will benefit patients in the Ottawa region, and around the world.” Funds raised from this year’s event are supporting a number of related cancer research initiatives, including clinical trials and the development of novel targeted therapies. “Each cancer, like each patient, is different,” said Dr. Duncan Stewart, CEO and Scientific Director of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and a Ride the Rideau participant. “By developing personalized therapies that are tailored for each patient, we will be able to give people treatments that are more likely to work from the very beginning.” Registration for Ride the Rideau 2012 has opened. “We will remember them.” This response to the Pledge of Remembrance voiced by Stittsville Legion member Clive Morris at the annual Remembrance Day service at the cenotaph in Stittsville last Friday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. really said it all – it was the time to remember all those who have fought for this country and its freedoms and particularly all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice of death in doing so. It was an overcast day with a cool wind as a parade of veterans, armed service personnel, three vintage military vehicles, Cadets, service club members, city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri, students and youngsters involved in Scouting and Guiding left the Stittsville Legion Hall at 1:45 p.m. to march along Stittsville Main Street and then up Warner Colpitts Lane to the cenotaph in front of the Johnny Leroux Stittsville Community Arena. At the cenotaph, the crowd of onlookers, estimated at 750 people, ringed the area, with the stands on the north side filled. Applause burst out as the Legion parade of veterans arrived at the site, just like applause would erupt as the parade left the cenotaph area following the service. After The Last Post, Lament and Reveille, councillor Qadri read “The Red Poppy” at the service while Carleton-Mississippi Mills MP Gordon O’Connor read the poem “In Flanders Fields. The laying of wreaths included the laying of a wreath on behalf of Silver Cross parents by Richard and Claire Leger of Stittsville who lost their son Sergeant Marc Leger in action in Afghanistan along with the laying of wreaths by representatives of the three levels of government, service clubs, organizations, businesses and individuals. Music during the service was provided by the Sacred Heart High School girls’ choir, the Sacred Heart High School Husky Voices boys’ choir, the Goulbourn Male Chorus, the Sacred Heart High School band and the Stittsville Legion concert band. The Highland Mist pipe band marched in the parade.

Laying a wreath for St. Philip’s Catholic School at the Remembrance Day service at Memorial Park in Richmond on Friday, Nov. 11 are Maddy Craig, left, and Molly McNeely, right.
Memorial Park in the heart of Richmond was filled for the annual Remembrance Day service on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 at 11 a.m. The parade of veterans and servicemen arrived at the park and cenotaph at the corner of Perth Street and McBean Street just before 11 a.m. After “O Canada” led by the South Carleton High School band and an opening prayer by Rev. Teresa Charlton of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the Last Post played by Maggie Dewar of South Carleton High School brought silence to the event as memories took over, with all present recalling the sacrifices paid by Canada’s military in wartime including the recent war in Afghanistan.
Bagpiper Eric Booth played the Lament, which was followed by Reveille by Maggie Dewar. South Carleton High School student copresident Hyuksoon Hwang red “The Red Poppy of Flanders” while his co-president Mike Dignam recited the poem “In Flanders Fields.” After the playing of the hymn “Abide With Me” by the SCHS band, the laying of the wreaths at the cenotaph took place, with retired Captain Peter Forsberg leading off in laying a wreath on behalf of the federal government. This began a parade of wreaths – the provincial government, the city of Ottawa, Silver Cross Mothers, Ladies Who Served, the Merchant Marines, Fallen Comrades, Richmond’s Volunteer Firefight-
ers – it continued on and on, until the foot of the cenotaph was a sea of wreaths, all remembering those who had served and who had died for the cause of freedom. “They shall grow not old/As we that are left grow old/Age shall not weary them/Nor the years condemn./At the going down of the sun/And in the morning,/We will remember them”, said Jim Becking as he recited the Pledge of Remembrance. “We will remember them” replied all those in attendance. After a closing prayer led by Rev. Michel Dubord of St. John’s Anglican Church and “God Save The Queen” led by the SCHS band, the ceremony ended, with the veterans and servicemen parading away past a reviewing party.

Stittsville youth entertain at coffee house
john.curry@metroland.com
It was billed as a coffee house, so performer Nicholas Maillet reflected this in one of his songs as he sang “Coffee and Cigarettes,” a song recorded in 2009 by American rock band Never Shout Never. And indeed last Saturday’s two hour presentation of musical entertainment by Stittsville’s youth was delivered very much in the nature of a coffee house atmosphere with singer performers taking to the stage, some accompanying themselves on guitar in the best of coffee house tradition. The only real variance from this coffee house tradition was the musical offerings of the two piece band “The Dirty Thirties,” whose music and vocals rocked the upstairs hall at the Johnny Leroux Stittsville Community
Centre. Their half hour set included a couple of original songs. Braden Foulkes, who sang and played the electric guitar, and drummer Bron Dierich admitted that they have had a variety of band names over time but that “The Dirty Thirties” is the latest and perhaps is a good reflection of the band since they like to play a lot of older, blues-like songs, going back in time much like the name. Their high energy, high volume performance was
Nicholas Maillet
followed by singer/guitarist Michael Spafford who sang “Summer of ‘69” which was first made famous by rocker Bryan Adams. Michael had been scheduled to sing with his brother Matt but he was unable to be present. Polina Tarabukhina, accompanying herself on the guitar, sang two songs that she herself has written: “When I Think About Tomorrow” and “Paradise.” Nik Kuzmochka thrilled the audience with his a cappella performance of Bon Jovi’s 2001 hit “It’s My Life.” MC Nicholas Maillet then took over the stage, sitting on a chair and accompanying himself on the guitar as he sang a number of songs including “Lying Through Your Teeth,” a song that he wrote with a friend. In his stage chatter, he told how he and a friend
had recently travelled to Montreal to audition for Canada’s Got Talent, a new talent-based reality TV show that will start next March. A decision on whether they made the show or not will be rendered in December. Nicholas later returned to the stage to wrap up the coffee house but he was followed in his initial appearance on stage by a trio of performers – twins Joel and Kyle Curry and Morgan O’Grady. Joel, who also played the keyboard, sang several solos including an original song “Black Mascara,” before being joined by the others. Joel and Kyle sang some duets and then were joined by Morgan on a couple of occasions for songs such as “Valerie”, a song made famous by Amy Winehouse as the featured vocalist on a 2007 Mark Ronson album. This coffee house fea-
turing local talent was held by Stittsville’s Youth Connexion program as a fundraising effort with half of proceeds not only from the two dollar admission but also from the refreshment booth going to the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa for their youth mental health initiatives. The other half of the proceeds will go to support Stittsville’s Youth Connexion program. (30) During the program, which attracted city of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri among its attendees, those in attendance heard from Kelsey Smith, a friend of Jamie Hubley who recently died from suicide. She told how most everyone has been bullied in their lives but that change can happen. “We can all make a little difference,” she said, noting that everyone is a
beautiful person in their own right. Those at the coffee house also heard a little about the Youth Services Bureau. Among its services for youth are a 24 hour, seven days a week crisis phone line and also a youth walk in clinic where troubled youth can go at any time.

LAURA MUELLER AND JOHN CURRY The beavers at Paul Lindsay Park in Stittsville have been saved – for now. Ottawa is halting the trapping activity that was launched to remove two beavers from the storm water management pond. But the city wouldn’t rule out trapping beavers if they cause flooding, said Stittsville Coun. Shad Qadri. “That (trapping) could still happen,” Qadri said. “I’m not hoping that it happens. “If (flooding) happens, I am sure the city would have to take the necessary action in order to protect from flooding,” he said. But Anita Utas, organizer of a group of “guardians” fighting to protect the beaver, said she wasn’t worried because beavers
are very unlikely to cause flooding in the winter. “I’m remaining positive,” Utas said. “They are slight hibernators, so they won’t be causing any problems right now … I don’t think there is going to be a question of flooding.” Mayor Jim Watson said the city will be looking at what it can do to prevent flooding altogether. “I have to get more information on what are the consequences of moving an animal farther afield so it doesn’t do the damage, but it keeps the animal alive,” Watson said. The city also committed to speeding up the development of its wildlife strategy which includes how to deal with beavers in storm water management pond areas. “We have heard in recent days that people would like us to have a second look at how
we protect the integrity of our flood control systems and we are listening and acting,” Watson said as he announced the halting of the beaver at the Paul Lindsay Park pond on the morning of Thursday, Nov. 10. Utas said she and the other beaver supporters are “very grateful” for the city’s decision. The group was set to hold a rally at city hall at noon on Nov. 10, but instead used the event to thank the city. A person dressed as a beaver held a sign thanking the city for “giving a dam” as he greeted the mayor and councillor Qadri. But Utas said she also wanted to remind the mayor and Qadri that the need for humane wildlife practices is a citywide issue. “It’s not that the killing has stopped completely,” Utas said. Utas asked to have city staff consult with an expert on humane stormwater devices.

An Olympian was in Munster last Saturday, Nov. 12. Nick Tritton, currently the overall number one ranked male competitor in Canada and ranked in the top ten in the world in the under 73 kilogram weight category in judo, paid a visit to the city of Ottawa’s judo program at the Munster Elementary School. For Nick, it was like coming home because he was a member of the Munster Judo Club from the age of 13 through 16. Growing up in Perth, Nick thanks to his father Mark’s support and driving, travelled to various judo clubs and programs all over the area in order to get as much training, competition and experience as possible. The Munster Judo Club was one of his clubs. Nick was a member of the Canadian Olympic team in Beijing, China in 2008 and will be going to the Olympics in London in 2012 where he is determined to bring home the gold medal. Besides his Olympic experience, Nick, who is now 27 years old, has won World Cup events and was first in the Pan American Championships in San Salvador in 2010. He also placed first in the Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires in 2009 and won the senior Canadian championship in the under 81 kilogram class in 2008. For Mike Heney, a longtime instructor at the judo program in Munster, Nick’s most memorable traits when he was in the Munster program were his keenness and competitive drive.
“He had this confidence about him that he was going to win no matter what,” Mike reports in an email about Nick. “Nick is a very hard worker and he’s gotten to where he is today from a lot of heart, a great work ethic, the desire to be champion and a dad who made sure Nick got everywhere he needed to be,” Mike continues. He notes that the odds are not in favour of someone coming from a very small judo club to do well on the world stage but Nick, thanks to his will to win, his other attributes and a supportive father, has made it happen. “Nick’s greatest attribute when he was at our club were he never stopped. The harder the practice the more he liked it,” Mike writes in the email. Mike also points out that Nick has achieved his high status in judo despite having to change his entire style a couple of years ago. This was because the International Judo Federation altered some rules, disallowing certain throws and other related maneuvers to prevent it becoming like wrestling. These alterations affected Nick’s style and so he had to retrain his style while staying competitive on the world stage. Despite the difficulty in doing this, Nick has done it as his current world ranking indicates. Nick, while busy with a growing family in Montreal, has returned to visit or do clinics at the Munster Judo Club a number of times in recent years. Nick is now getting ready for his next tournaments which are in early December in Korea and Japan.
