The King Chow Chinese Food Take-Out is now part of Stittsville’s restaurant history. The Stittsville Main Street business closed last Sunday, July 3 after over 24 years of providing Chinese food on a take-out basis to Stittsville and area customers. “It’s a totally family business,” Nora Chow said in describing the business just before opening for the final time last Sunday. And that is how it was for all of its years in operation, with Nora’s husband Kenneth in the kitchen for all 24 years, working seven days a week with only Christmas Day off. The kitchen was his ‘kingdom,’ as it were – no one else worked there. Nora herself would be at the restaurant in the evenings after working all day in the federal government as well as on weekends. Gardens – there are so many kinds – large, small, artistic, restful. How to know about them all? But you can see a good representation of the various types of gardens in a garden tour being hosted by the Stittsville Goulbourn Horticultural Society this Saturday, July 9. Called the “Glorious Gardens of Stittsville,” the tour will include a wide variety of gardens, all of them quite fantastic in their own right. You will see flowers, fruits, vegetables, planters, ponds, art – everything that a gardener would like to see.
Those on this self-guided garden tour can proceed from garden to garden at their own pace and in any order that strikes their fancy. The tour will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and so lunch breaks are up to the participants. There are restaurants in Stittsville as well as a number of parks where a picnic lunch can be enjoyed. Double benefit from hair cutting If Bill Tyers were a ball player, he would have hit a grand slam to win both ends of a doubleheader. Yes, what he has done is that spectacular. On Wednesday, June 29, in a lunchtime ceremony in front of his co-workers at the Ottawa Carleton District School Board depot on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville, he said goodbye to his very – and we mean very – long ponytail. But in so doing, he helped out not only an organization that provides wigs for children undergoing cancer treatments but also helped out the eight year old daughter of a coworker who right now is fighting a rare form of leukemia. So, as we said, he has spectacularly struck a blow that will help win a couple of battles with cancer. The long ponytail which was sliced off is being donated to Angel Hair for Kids, a program that provides wigs and hair loss solutions to children in Canada who have lost their hair due to a medical condition or because of a cancer or other treatment. Angel Hair creates wigs from donated lengthy hair and then provides them at no cost to the family of the suffering child. It takes up to a dozen donated ponytails to make one wig. Providing such a wig increases a child’s self esteem and self-image during a difficult and sometimes painful time of their lives. So, Bill Tyers’ hair will contribute to the work of this amazing organization, Angel Hair for Kids. But that is not all that
this hair cutting has achieved. It has also raised funds for eight year old Jessica McCoy of Munster who is fighting a rare form of leukemia. Her father Doug works as an instrumentation technician in the maintenance division at the Ottawa Carleton District School Board depot where Bill Tyers also works. The hair cutting has raised funds by making it a fund raising contest to help out Jessica, with the person who raised the most money in the contest getting the privilege of cutting Bill’s hair at the Depot’s annual lunchtime barbecue. The person with the largest donation turned out to
be Marianne Graham of Stittsville who is also a teacher at the Castlefrank Elementary School. And so, there she was at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, separating Bill from his extensive ponytail. A happy time, indeed, because it was helping out twice – Angel Hair for Kids was getting the hair and the family of Jessica McCoy was getting some financial help to assist them through this time when its focus is on their daughter and her fight against cancer. Yes, sir, it was a real grand slam event, twice over. Thank you, Bill Tyers. Thank you, Marianne Graham and all the other donors. You have made a difference.

The recent Girls Night Out fundraiser in Richmond turned out to be great for Friends of Hospice Ottawa. Over $51,000 was raised at the event at the Richmond arena which was attended by 700 ladies and hosted by entertainer Wayne Rostad who also served as the auctioneer for the live auction. Over 300 items were available for bid in the silent and live auctions that evening. Ladies were ushered to their seats by city of Ottawa volunteer firefighters. Margaritas were available from the cabana boys at the bar and AJ’s Catering provided the buffet-style dinner, serving the 700 guests in under 12 minutes. Pole dancing was the featured entertainment of the evening. All of the funds raised will go to support the programs and services provided by Friends of Hospice Ottawa. These include two day hospices, one of which is in Richmond, in-home support services, bereavement support and transportation services.

Morning fire destroys home at Country Club Estates SPECIAL TO THE NEWS A morning fire completely destroyed the interior of a home on Carlisle Circle in Country Club Estates west of Stittsville on Monday, July 4. Estimate damage has been listed at $300,000 for the home and $175,000 for the contents. The Ottawa Fire Service received the call about the fire at 9:26 a.m. Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters encountered heavy smoke on the home’s main floor. ers went through the floor. This caused the firefighters to immediately withdraw and instead attack the fire from the front entrance by going through the floor. It is believed that the fire started in the basement, spreading to the main floor and attic. This happens when there is a large buildup of heat in an enclosed space which at a certain temperature ignites all the combustible material in the enclosed area. 450081

Hazeldean Road Construction Update. In a continuing series of updates, here is the latest news regarding the Hazeldean Road development. A major portion of the construction work on the Carp River Bridge has been completed and the tentative construction schedules for the remaining activities are as follow. The parapet wall and the concrete sidewalk work on the bridge is slated for first week of July 2011 while the water proofing on the Carp River Bridge deck is scheduled for the 3rd week of July. The construction of east and west approach slabs are in progress and should be completed towards the end of July. The concrete curb work has been completed and here is the timeline for the remaining activities: Concrete sidewalk and median work • Mid July 2011. Once the false work under the bridge is removed construction of east and west wall along the Carp River will start. Installation of Street lights • 3rd week of July 2011 Hydro Ottawa to install permanent poles close to bridge • 3rd week of July Miscellaneous landscaping • 3rd week of July Noise wall installation • Mid July 2011 Top Lift of Asphalt • End of July 2011 Removal of Hazeldean Road Detour @ Carp river • Mid to late August 2011 Extension of construction work on phase I has been awarded to Cavanagh Construction. The scope of this work includes the resurfacing of Iber Road from the south limit of Hazeldean Road to approximately 850m south of that and including the paved shoulder on both sides. The additional work is expected to be completed by late July to early August 2011. Reasons to Stoop and Scoop As a dog owner, by complying with the City of Ottawa’s Animal Care and Control By-law and removing waste left by your pet, you will help eliminate a source of pollution. You will be making a difference and here’s why: First, dog waste adds up. The 93,000 dogs in Ottawa produce an estimated 45,000 pounds (20,500) kilograms) of waste per day! When you stoop and scoop, sidewalks, parks and green spaces are much cleaner. Second, leaving your dog’s waste in areas where children play exposes kids to parasites such as roundworms, as well as bacterial infections so it is also a health hazard. Third, no matter where you live, spring run-off or heavy rainstorms dilute dog waste and wash it into streams and storm sewers so it is an environmental hazard. Fourth, removing dog waste is responsible. If we all clean up after our dogs, public opinion of dogs and dog ownership will be much more positive. And finally, dog waste can cost you. The City of Ottawa’s Animal Care and Control By-law requires that dog waste be removed from public property. If you do get caught “in the act”, you may be fined. So please take the time to pick up after your dog or ‘cat,’ if that is the case, and help keep Stittsville a clean and healthy place to live. The firefighters managed to get the fire under control by 12 noon but not before the fire had spread to the attic space as well. Firefighters were unable to gain entry to certain areas of the home since the floor had collapsed. However, the Ottawa Police Service
managed to track down the homeowner and it was confirmed that there was no one home at the time of the fire. A total of 60 firefighters were on the scene during the height of the blaze, with 15 fire vehicles. There were no injuries sustained. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Extrication required in head-on collision

A pregnant female driver had to be extricated from her vehicle as a result of a head-on collision at the intersection of Carp Road and Westbrook
Road on Wednesday, June 29 just after 12 noon. The pregnant woman was accompanied by a child in her late model four door vehicle that was involved in the collision. Both the extricated
pregnant female driver and the child were looked after on the site by paramedics. Five Ottawa Fire Service vehicles were at the scene, with 12 firefighters on duty.
King Chow Chinese Food Take-Out From page 1 And to add to the family flavour, in the early years, the Chow’s two children, Christopher and Jonathan, would be in the “living room section” of the restaurant, doing their homework after being dropped off at the restaurant by the school bus. Even the premises themselves gave a family business feeling as the King Chow Chinese Food Take-Out spent its years not in a plaza or commercially-built location but rather in a former bungalow home. Nora and Ken Chow moved to Stittsville in 1984 where Ken opened the New Queen Restaurant at the Village Plaza at the corner of Stittsville Main Street and Hobin Street. Ken had always worked in the restaurant business, ever since his teen years. In 1987, Nora and Ken thought that a small Chinese take-out business would suit them better and be good for the community. That’s how the King Chow Chinese Food Take-Out got started. The name itself came about easily. Ken’s Chinese name is King which was combined with the family name of Chow – hence the name King Chow Chinese Food Take-Out. The restaurant has pretty well stayed the same over the years, with much the same menu. Granted prices have gone up a bit but it has remained the same, with Ken labouring in the kitchen and Nora or one of the high school students hired over the years looking after the front-end, taking orders and serving the customers when they arrived for their order. While the King Chow Chinese Food Take-Out has looked much the same over the years, the area around it has changed. The Daphne Crescent development to the immediate north was one change. It turned out to be a change for the better as many residents became customers. Indeed, many of these neighbours dropped into the restaurant last week to say farewell to the Chows. There was also talk at one time of an apartment building on the land south of
the King Chow restaurant but nothing ever came of it. Nora and Ken have nothing but praise for Stittsville, both as a place to do business and as a place to live. “It’s nice doing business in Stittsville,” Nora says, while praising the many regular and loyal customers which King Chow Chinese Food Take-Out experienced over the years. Many customers have been patronizing the business for over 20 years. Bob White, one of these longtime customers, recalls the personalized service that made it special to be a customer. For instance, Nora would always give him extra “hot mustard” packets because she knew that he loved it. He also remembers how in the early years the Chow children would be there on the premises as their parents ran the restaurant – a family business in every sense of the word. He also recalls how the Chows used to give customers a five dollar refund after a certain number of orders. “It’s been really great,” Nora says in summing up King Chow’s years in business in Stittsville. Weekends and Fridays have always been the busiest times. “And we really like Stittsville,” she adds, which explains why she and Ken have been happy Stittsville residents since 1984. Ken will now be leaving his seven days a week work schedule behind as he is retiring after a lifetime in the restaurant business. Nora says that Ken will now be able to putter around the house, doing some of those tasks that up until now have played second fiddle to the business. At home, Ken does not usually do the cooking. Whether this changes now in his retirement, who knows? As for Nora, she still has a few more years to go before she will be retiring from her full-time government job. The Chows have sold the property but not the business, so the King Chow Chinese Take-Out as such will not be continuing. The future use of the property will be up to the new owners.

Cascading bursts of colour fill sky on Canada Day JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com
Sunny, warm weather prevailed for this year’s Canada Day celebrations in Stittsville but as in the past, the most popular attraction happens when the sun has gone to bed – the gala fireworks display. More than 2,000 people, armed with lawn chairs and blankets, crowded into this year’s new Canada Day site, the grassed area between the Trans Canada Trail and Sacred Heart High School and its parking lot, to witness 13 minutes of eye popping, awe invoking cascading bursts of colour that filled the sky virtually constantly before wrapping up at 10 p.m. This fireworks display concluded what was a day of music, dance, games and just plain neighbourly chatting. What a great way to spend Canada Day! It all began at 3 p.m. when bagpiper Jordan McConnell led a Stittsville Legion colour party and a group of dignitaries to the main stage to officially open the celebrations. Carleton-Mississippi Mills MP Gordon O’Connor, in his remarks at the official opening, noted that Canada has developed into a great nation admired throughout the world. He noted that while other countries around the world such as Ireland, Japan and the United States have been battling problems of late, Canada has avoided such a situation.
“We in Canada live in this little island of tranquility,” he said. “Happy 144th birthday,” he proclaimed. “Happy Canada Day, Stittsville,” city of Ottawa mayor Jim Watson shouted as he ended his remarks at the official opening. He noted that William and Kate were at the Stittsville event, albeit looking a “little stiff,” perhaps a reflection of the “stiff upper lip” for which the British are known. Mayor Watson was referring to a cardboard cutout of William and Kate which was set up at the Goulbourn Historical Society’s tent at the event. This life size cutout image of the newlyweds attracted considerable attention throughout the day, with many snapping photos of friends and family members standing beside the regal pair. City of Ottawa Stittsville ward councillor Shad Qadri, in his remarks, advised that Canadians should wave the Canadian flag proudly not only on Canada Day but throughout the year. He urged Canadians to take good care of the country in order to hand it over to the youngster generation that is now growing up. This year the Stittsville Village Association, which organizes these Canada Day activities in Stittsville, inaugurated very Canadian sounding levels of corporate sponsorship. Granted, there was the highest gold sponsorship level for major sponsor Mattamy Homes. But then there was the Canadian Maple sponsorship
level, as well as the Canadian Moose level and the Canadian Beaver level. The official opening ceremony, which had begun with a performance of “O Canada” by the Stittsville Main and Abbott Dance Band, concluded with the cutting of a giant Canada cake, with pieces available to one and all. Entertainment took over the stage after the official opening. The Main and Abbott Dance Band was followed by a performance by Stittsville singers Kyle and Joel Curry. The television show “So you think you can dance” had nothing on the dance demonstration put on by dancers from the Pointe of Grace Dance Company of Stittsville. Their energetic group numbers, ranging from hip hop to modern dance, drew an enthusiastic response from the audience. The Stittsville Concert Band, in its performance on stage, took the audience on a musical tour of France. Other entertainment which rounded out the program until fireworks time at 9:45 p.m. include the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts, which gave a demonstration of Thailand’s national sport which is much like American kick boxing; “Sweet Instincts,” a band whose offerings ranged from the Beatles songs to Fleetwood Mac to Alannah Myles’ “Black Velvet”; the Chad Wolfe Stepdancers; and the band “Take Five” which rounded out the entertainment package. As the sun set and hundreds arrived for the fireworks, glow sticks were distributed throughout the assembling crowd – red, yellow and blue. Many ended up
as glowing necklaces or as ankle bracelets or simply as circular hoops, great for tossing around. There was more than just entertainment, of course, at this year’s Canada Day activities. There was an expansive children’s play area set up at the western end of the site, complete with numerous inflated bounces such as a giant slide and a castle. There were also children’s games such as a bean bag toss. The Goulbourn Historical Society had a tent set up, complete with a life size cardboard cutout of William and Kate on display. The Goulbourn Museum also had a royalty aspect to some of its display with photos of many royal couples which had to be matched up. The Goulbourn Museum also provided face painting and collected hand prints for a display that will be exhibited at the Museum at Stanley’s Corners. The Dandelions Children’s Boutique from Stittsville Main Street, with new owner Sandy Edwards patriotically wearing a red maple leaf dress, was on hand, providing youngsters with the opportunity to create the biggest bubbles that possibly could be created. The croquet golf game, familiar from other Canada Day activities in Stittsville, was set up again this year, resplendent with numerous Canada flags blowing in the gentle breeze that prevailed throughout much of the day – flying from the game’s miniature parliament building, among other places. Pedro, Stephanie, Fluffy, Prince, Mr. Wiggles, Mojo and more. These were just some of the headliners at just one of the many attractions at this year’s Canada Day celebrations in Stittsville. And, no, they were not on the main stage where entertainment poured forth from immediately after the official opening at 3 p.m. through to 9:45 p.m. when the gala fireworks started to light up the darkened sky. Rather, our collection of headliners were the stars of a show by Little Ray’s Reptiles, held in a shaded area near the vast collection of inflated bounces and children’s games that was a main attraction for the younger set at this year’s celebrations.
More than 150, youngsters with parents, attended the Little Ray’s Reptiles show and saw Pedro, a green iguana who just happens to have three eyes, yes, three of them, with the third one on the top of his head as kind of a sky watch alert. Pedro was followed by Stephanie, a Florida king snake who happens to eat other snakes and smells with her tongue. Fluffy, the Canadian representative in the show, was a snapping turtle. There was also a scorpion, a big one – in fact, the largest one of the 1500 different species of scorpions. And then there was Prince, a poisonous white tree frog but poisonous only if eaten by another. Next in the show was Mr. Wiggles, a dwarf caiman crocodilian, followed by Mojo, a python who is now 12 feet long but will grow to be twice as long.

Compiling information on the existing road conditions around the Carp Road landfill site is part of the process now being undertaken by Waste Management regarding its proposed addition of another landfill on the site. Waste Management reports that a total of 59 vehicles were involved in 36 collisions reported in the area of the landfill site over the four years dating from Jan. 1, 2006 to Dec. 31, 2009. Ten of these collisions were at the Carp Road and Richardson Sideroad intersection while 12 of them were on the Carp Road between the highway 417 interchange and Richardson Sideroad. There were no fatal collisions and about 25 percent of the collisions involved injury or medical attention. Waste Management, in its transportation existing conditions documentation, describes Carp Road as a two lane, undivided arterial road with a posted speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour. Richardson Sideroad is described as a two lane, undivided collector road.

Showing our patriotism Canadians are getting it. At one time, Canadians used to be rather reserved when it came to celebrating their nationalism and showing their patriotism. Perhaps it was a remnant of our colonial days and the non-violent way in which the country was created. Who knows? But times have changed. You only had to witness or hear about the crowd on Parliament Hill on Canada Day this year to know that Canadians are now taking their patriotism seriously. Granted, William and Kate were celebrity royal visitors on the Hill, adding to the interest, but it was not a royal party – it was a Canadian party. And so it was here in Stittsville as well. There was so much red and white visible among those at the Canada Day celebra-
tions on the grounds at Sacred Heart High School. It was a celebration of this country and just how lucky we all are to live in such a place. The Stittsville Village Association, organizers of the Canada Day celebrations, and all of the corporate sponsors, ranging from Heritage Canada to the city of Ottawa to Mattamy Homes to various local businesses, deserve our thanks for all of the work and planning which went into the celebrations again this year. Thanks also to all those who volunteered, who gave up their own holiday, in order to help things run smoothly at the celebrations. And thanks also to those like the Goulbourn Museum, the Stittsville District Lions Club, the Goulbourn Township Historical Society and Stittsville
Scouting for taking part in the celebrations. When so many contribute and help out, the event can’t help but be a success. Remember, these celebrations just don’t happen; they have to be planned and organized. It takes months for all of the pieces to be put in place, no small task. And then, when it all comes together like this year, with great weather the final topping on the cake, you do get to feel the glow of Canadian patriotism. Yes, this is our country and we can do anything that we put our minds to – and thanks to the SVA organizers, this means a spectacular Canada Day celebration, ending with our own fireworks gala. Thank you, SVA, for providing us with a great local venue at which to show and share our patriotism.

The good news and the bad about the arts in Canada Summer is the right time for a look at the good, the bad and, yes, the ugly in the Canadian arts. First the good: Last week, during the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, a band of young musicians rehearsed in the theatre of Library and Archives Canada, as part of the TD Jazz Youth Summit. The 17 players, high school, university and college students, were brought together from across the country. Later, they would present two concerts on the festival’s main stage. Three seasoned pros, all Canadians, worked with them as they struggled to learn a difficult composition, Transit, by Darcy James Argue. The band’s musical director, Jim Lewis, a Toronto trumpeter, composer and teacher, welcomed Argue, who is originally from Vancouver but now leads a New Yorkbased band. One of his trumpet players, Ingrid Jensen, who is also originally from B.C., also pitched in, as well as playing fiery trumpet solos. The guidance was in part technical but also
CHARLES GORDON general — it was about breathing, it was about not playing timidly, it was about projecting authority and it was enjoyed by both sides. “I’m very appreciative of you guys playing my music,” Argue told them. By the end of the 1 1/2-hour rehearsal, the piece was sounding almost as professional as it would sound later that night, when Argue’s own band, the Secret Society, played it in Confederation Park. Here was the Canadian arts scene at its best, the essential components being talented young performers, dedicated mentors and generous funders. In varying degrees it can found across the spectrum of the arts in this country. In music, theatre, dance and writing, more and more young Canadians are emerging as impressive performers, ready to take
their place in the professional ranks. Here’s the bad: Once they get to the professional ranks, they find they can’t make a living. The same day the young jazz musicians were rehearsing in Ottawa, the SummerWorks theatre festival in Toronto was facing a significant loss of government grants. The federal Heritage department’s rejection letter to SummerWorks was particularly ominous. It said it was looking for “tangible results, which contribute to Program objectives; provide the best possible value for money; and meet the needs of Canadians.” This is great. Government is quantifying art, looking at plays and music and paintings to see if they produce tangible results that contribute to Program objectives. I think that’s one play you don’t want to see. Meanwhile, the federal finance minister, James Flaherty, was warning cultural institutions not to count on government grants. And of course they
shouldn’t, but anybody who thinks the arts in this country can operate without help from government and corporate donors doesn’t know much about how the arts work, not only here but all over the world. The unfortunate thing, here and all over the world, is that the people buying tickets, CDs, books and paintings, do not provide enough revenue to keep the culture going. That’s the ugly part. The ugly part is us. Those of us who have money to spare, spend thousands on elaborate electronics and home theatre systems and, relatively speaking, virtually nothing on going out to see live music and the-

atre. Festival season may be an exception. People seem capable of venturing out of the house if someone is putting on a festival nearby. Tickets and passes are relatively cheap, helped by the grants that cultural institutions are told not to count on any more. But once the summer is over, we go back inside, turn on the home entertainment system, download music for free and leave the artists to fend for themselves. As anyone who has seen Canadian young people perform knows, we are doing a terrific job of training young artists. But we are doing a terrible job of supporting them. Some of that is government’s fault, but a lot of it is ours.

He was an avid golfer and bridge player. He is survived by his wife Maureen Rowan, six children, ten grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three stepchildren as well as by a sister. He was predeceased by his wife Patricia Lewis, a stepchild Daniel, a brother Francis and a sister Claire. His Mass of Christian Funeral was held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Stittsville on Friday, June 10. In memoriam donations to a charity of choice would be appreciated.

Born in 1926 in Springhill, Nova Scotia, he joined the Fleet Air Arm near the end of World War Two, transferring to the Royal Canadian Air Force after the war. He flew the Lancaster and Argus in Maritime Patrol and the T33 jet for fun. Colonel Johnson was a former Commanding Officer of 415 Squadron and a longtime Director of Maritime Aviation.

Students at Munster Elementary School are both good fundraisers and good stewards of the environment. On the fundraising side of things, the students raised $3,054.42 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation in the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent Jump Rope for Heart event. On the environmental side of things, the school recently achieved bronze-level status in the EcoSchools certification program. EcoSchools certification involves a rigorous province-wide set of criteria that are used to
assess the achievement of environmentally-responsible actions and environmental learning. Certification involves achieving points in each of six areas, including Teamwork and Leadership, Energy Conservation, Waste Minimization, School Ground Greening, Curriculum and Environmental Stewardship. Munster Elementary School was able to achieve bronze-level status in this program thanks to the efforts of the members of the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s EcoTeam throughout the 2010-2011 school year as well as the efforts of all students and staff at the school.

Fundraising dance on July 15 SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Caucasian Challenge time is coming up in Stittsville on Friday, July 15. That’s when Suzanne Smith and Sheila Hutchison, two ladies who grew up in the Stittsville area and attended South Carleton High School, will be hosting a charity fundraising dance. Funds raised will help out the half dozen international charities that the Caucasian Challenge car rally supports in the ten countries through which it travels. In addition, Suzanne and Sheila are also supporting two charities here in Canada as well, one being the Ottawa Humane Society and the other being the Canadian Breast Cancer Society. Suzanne and Sheila, calling themselves the Canadian Cougars, are the first all female, all Canadian team to participate in this rally which will travel 6000 kilometers through ten countries during two weeks at the end of August. To raise funds to support the charities that they are supporting, Suzanne and Sheila are hosting a dance on Friday, July 15 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Stittsville Legion Hall on Stittsville Main Street in Stittsville. The dance will feature a DJ who does a great light show. There will
also be a silent auction, a bottle raffle, 50/50 draws and games. Tickets are available for $10 each in advance or $15 at the door. This will be a great mid-summer event to use as a reunion of longtime friends while also helping out in raising funds for causes as diverse as an orphanage in Armenia, the Ottawa Humane Society and the Canadian Breast Cancer Society. Suzanne and Sheila are also seeking corporate sponsors for their rally adventure. This can include a monetary donation in return for a log on the Canadian Cougars vehicle in the rally or could be items such as sporting goods, toys, clothing or electronics that could be donated to the orphanage or school being supported by this year’s rally. Rachel Bennett and Alexandra Power received the Kiwanis Key Club Award while Tim Charlebois and Jenny Miller received the Manotick Kiwanis Award for being active in school affairs and achieving a high academic standing. The Kiwanis of Canada Scholarship, awarded to a graduating member of the South Carleton Key Club, went to Alexandra Power. Tessa Ghadban received the Richmond District Lions Club Memorial Scholarship while Taylor Habgood received the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 625 Richmond Award. The “I Will Succeed Scholarship,” given to a graduate who has overcome adversity to demonstrate high academic achievement, school involvement and leadership qualities, was presented to Jennifer MacLeod. Kaleigh Brown and Brogan Carruthers received the Emily Keogh Memorial Scholarship for their leadership at South Carleton.
The A.F. Austin Award for making an outstanding contribution to the school’s music program was presented to Robyn Dick and Alexandra Power. The Tammy Clark Memorial Music Award, given for demonstrating a love of music, went to Sarah Davies and Jenna Khawas. The Storm Award for dedication and commitment to sports went to Tessa Ghadban. The Athlete of the Year Award went to Brad Davies and Sara MacKellar. Those at the commencement ceremony, which was held at the Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School in Nepean South, heard greetings from Ottawa Carleton District School Board trustee Lynn Scott as well as remarks from South Carleton principal Trudy Garland. Graduates Natalie Kellar and Alexa Polenz presented “Reflections of 2010-2011” while the Storm Surge, the school’s new glee club, entertained with a musical presentation. Brogan Carruthers was the valedictorian for the graduating class.

awaiting wheelchair. And the scenario played out again just as poignantly when, during the presentation of individual awards, she once again slowly made her way onto and across the stage, once again ignoring any use of the wheelchair ramp which led from the floor of the Bell Sensplex indoor field house to the stage. This time Rachel received the Catherine Manson Memorial Award, presented in memory of an original Sacred Heart staff member who died from cancer and given annually to a graduating student who has shown courage in overcoming a challenge. She received the award and its $250 monetary prize from Sacred Heart teacher Robert Hopewell. And while Rachel Kearney’s graduation scenario was the most physically graphic and heart warming, there is no doubt but that each graduate represented a unique story of perseverance, effort, study, work and support to get to that moment of walking across the stage and receiving a secondary school graduation diploma from principal Owens. There were, of course, as could be expected from 329 such stage trips, some that were not straightforward and routine such as when Alexandra MacQueen’s mortarboard flew off her head as she was having her diploma moment or when “Happy Birthday” rang out in the cavernous field house when Sean O’Rourke strode across the stage to receive his diploma and, then, for good measure, an even louder “Happy Birthday” rang out from the booming voice of his father Mike, just in case no one heard the initial greeting (Mike explained in a verbal footnote) or when Ben von Jagow travelled across the stage and received his diploma in his sock feet while carrying his shoes. He had his shoes back on, though, when he later mounted the stage to receive the Lieutenant Governor’s Volunteer Award for exemplary community service and gave an embracing hug to presenter Debbie Kealey, a Sacred Heart vice-principal. These were but some of the more visible happenings at Sacred Heart’s 11th annual graduation exercises on Wednesday, June 29, an event that marked the end of years of schooling for the 329 graduates, ending in a secondary school graduation diploma and setting them on the course for further schooling, the world of work or even a year off to travel or otherwise discover the route of their future. And so, when the diplomas were all presented and the graduates were told that they could now shift the tassel on their mortarboards to the side identifying them as a graduate, more than just the tassels moved – the mortarboards were tossed into the air, appearing like a flock of blackbirds spooked by a noise, as they moved skyward and then fell back to the floor. But this was a moment of celebration, of achievement, of suddenly knowing that they were high school graduates, a major step in their journey of life. The whole commencement exercise was a time of celebration, from the moment that the graduates, wearing their gowns and mortarboards, marched in from the rear, passing through the waiting crowd of parents, grandparents and friends. They all heard some words of praise and advice from a trio of speakers – principal Cindy Owens, Ottawa Catho-
lic School Board trustee John Curry and area superintendent Greg Mullen – before receiving their diplomas, mounting the stage while giant screens displayed their individual photo, most with an accompanying quotation. In her remarks, principal Cindy Owens called the class of 2011 a new generation of students thanks to their use of computer devices. “You live in an exciting time,” she told the graduates, praising them not only for their connectedness but for their highly evolved social skills and their accomplishments while at Sacred Heart, such as helping build schools in Africa, holding food drives, making sandwiches for the Shepherds of Good Hope and helping to raise $31,000 in the school’s annual cake auction, all of which goes to various charities. She said that they will be facing many issues in the future, issues that will require a need for action and an ability to create change. Ottawa Catholic School Board trustee John Curry called today’s youth the country’s greatest resource because the youth of today will be the difference makers of tomorrow, changing the world into one that is more concerned with the Gospel values and social justice matters. He challenged the graduates to make a difference in the future, whether it be in the areas of the environment, aboriginal rights, helping the homeless and abused, assisting in developing countries, working on mental health issues or other issues. Ottawa Catholic School Board superintendent Greg Mullen told the graduates that the lessons that they have learned during their years at Sacred Heart will prepare them well for the future. He urged them to be contributing members of the community while also embracing change. Pay attention to the things that are important in your life, he told the graduates, noting that they should each set their own priorities for life. Matthew Parent, who received the John Shaughnessy Principal’s Award for making a significant contribution to the school community, was also the valedictorian at the commencement exercises.

Tayah and Mairi Liska are identical 14 year old twins. But they are anything but the same. Both are going into grade ten at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville this fall, that true. They excel at sports, also true, but different ones. Tayah is a wrestler while Mairi is a figure skater. Tayah got her first exposure to wrestling in grade eight, finding it a lot of fun. So she was back at it this past school year, eventually placing third in the city championship in her 47.5 kilogram weight class. Next year she hopes to be in the two top in the city to earn a trip to the provincial high school championships. Her wrestling philosophy is simple: always work hard and never give up, even if you are tired and sore. She believes that as long as she keeps practicing various moves, some of which can be rather confusing at first, she will eventually get better and become comfortable using the moves in competition. “I can see myself wrestling for the rest of high school,” Tayah says, describing it as a sport that is both fun and different. Mairi, on the other hand, is a figure skater, something that she has been doing since she was about nine years old. She has collected some medals in recent competitions but for her, it is not all about winning. “I’m just doing what I love,” she says. “I’ve always loved to skate.” She will be attending a summer skating school as a member of the Glen Cairn
Figure Skating Club. She expects to continue skating throughout her high school years and probably into her university years. She is not sure at present whether she will become a coach but she does love to help out youngster skaters, indicating that coaching may be in her future. Her sister Tayah also took skating lessons at one time and says that she still loves to skate. She also played ringette for a couple of years. Tayah is also a member of the Goulbourn Sea Hawks Swim Club with whom she practices three times a week. Both Tayah and Mairi love to downhill ski recreationally with their family, as both have been skiing since about the age of three. Mairi has recently gotten involved with track and field, competing with the Sacred Heart grade seven/eight team last year. She has also started training to become a lifeguard. Tayah and Mairi say that once a person gets to know them, it is not hard to tell them apart despite being identical twins. We have different personalities, Tayah says, describing herself as outgoing and sports minded. Mairi, on the other hand, admits to being somewhat the same but tends to be more feminine. “I’m just a little bit more girly,” Mairi says in comparing herself to Tayah. They agree that they have different likes and dislikes but also admit that they are very good friends who have a lot in common. They also say that they are close with their parents and a younger brother. “We like to do stuff together as a family” Tayah says.

Awards at Sacred Heart graduation SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Awards recognizing outstanding achievement in virtually every aspect of scholastic and other aspects of student involvement were presented at the annual commencement exercises of Sacred Heart Catholic High School on Wednesday, June 29. Held at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata, the commencement exercises saw students honoured individually in areas such as Catholic leadership, drama, ath-
letics, academic achievement, community service, improvement, music, peacekeeping and leadership. A total of 39 awards were presented with the prestigious Director of Education Award, presented for top academic performance as well as leadership, going to Claire Pageau. Hugh Victors was another double award winner, receiving the Laurysen Kitchens Technology Award for high achievement and leadership in technology as well as a Richmond Royal Canadian Legion Branch bursary. Other bursary recipients were Christine Dolan and Patrick Vice. The Governor General’s Academic Award for the student with the highest average in the grade 11 and 12 courses went to Douglas Maheux. He achieved an average of 94.26 percent in his grade 11 and 12 courses. The Archbishop’s Award for Catholic leadership went to Keegan Rowe for his dedication to spiritual growth and his active involvement in his parish. Alexandra Isenor, who starred as Dorothy in the school’s production of the musical “The Wizard of Oz,” received the Kanata Theatre Mary Mauger Award for her outstanding contribution to the school’s drama program. Shannon Baldwin was honoured with the Canadian Fed-
eration of University Women/ Kanata Award for her academic achievement and her service to the community. In the athletic field, Vikas Gill, one of the stars of Sacred Heart’s city championship senior boys’ basketball team, received the Play It Again Sports Graduate Athlete of the Year Award. Sean Stoqua, another member of Sacred Heart’s championship senior boys’ basketball team, was one of the co-recipients of the Goulbourn Basketball Association Grad Award, sharing the award with Emily O’Connor. This award goes to a basketball player who played with the Goulbourn Basketball Association for at least one season and who will be going on to play basketball at the college or university level. The Ottawa Catholic Trustee Award, given for demonstrating a high level of participation in school and community affairs, was presented to Lauren Ferris. The Susan Henry Memorial Staff Award, given in memory of former Sacred Heart viceprincipal Susan Henry to a student who has contributed to life at Sacred Heart by serving others, was presented to Aleethia Schwenger. The Peacekeeper Award, presented in honour of Marc Leger, a Canadian solder who died in the line of duty in Afghanistan, went to Corey Young. The award honours a student who has demonstrated a peacekeeping approach among his or her peers. The Stittsville News Quill Award for exceptional writing both in and out of the classroom went to Charlotte Orzel.

Michelle McGruer received the Knights of Columbus Holy Spirit Council Award for service to her fellow students while Shannon McSorley was the recipient of the Knights of Columbus St. Philip’s Council Award for being a former St. Philip School student who has demonstrated service to the community. The Sweetnam Trades Award, which is presented to a student involved in both school and community life, went to Liam Grahame while the Sweetnam Graduation Award with a similar criteria went to Adam Comerford. The Sens Foundation Algonquin Award for achievement in construction and housing was presented to Neil Dugan. The Friesens Grad Award went to Rebecca D’Angelo and Melissa Fournier while Jeff Heika received the Rideau Fire Protection Award. Rachel Moore received the Stittsville TD Canada Trust Janice Gray Memorial Award for exemplary leadership while Joshua Zentner-Barrett received the Student Council Grad Award for outstanding leadership. Usually it’s a gymnasium. But on Friday afternoon, June 17, it became a launch pad. It was the stage from which the grade six students at Ecole Jean-Paul II elementary school in Stittsville were launched into the next phase of their education, leaving the Abbott Street school to be off to high school. And it had all of the features of any graduation ceremony. The 36 graduating students wore black mortarboards, self-made but complete with tassels. And, as is traditional at graduation ceremonies, the students got to toss them up into the air at the conclusion of the one hour ceremony. The gymnasium took on a special atmosphere for the ceremony, with black silhouettes of each graduate outlining
the rear of the stage area. Red, black and white balloons adorned each side of the stage as well as marked the rear of the main and side aisles. Giant yellow flowers adorned the walls. The graduating students processed in two at a time, coming in from the gymnasium’s exterior doors on each side of the stage area and making their way around the rear of the audience chairs before processing side by side up the main aisle, taking their places on chairs lined up in front of the stage area, facing the audience. Each graduating student was called up on stage where each received a class photograph and diploma, along with a red rose. A special Francophone of the Year Award, given to the graduating student who best represented the ideal of a French speaking student, was presented to graduate Stephanie Joanette.

Garage sale, cupcakes to help Make-A-Wish SPECIAL TO THE NEWS Make-A-Wish (Eastern Ontario makes wishes come true for children with life threatening medical conditions. In 2008, Abigail MacMillan of Stittsville, who has a life threatening illness, was granted her wish to meet the Disney Princesses at Walt Disney World thanks to the efforts of Make-A-Wish. The family was so appreciative of this that it has held an annual MakeA-Wish fundraising event,
namely a cupcake sale, each year now to help other children achieve their wishes. This year, with the involvement of neighbours, there are going to be two Make-A-Wish fundraising events on the same day, Saturday, July 9, taking place right beside each other. There will be a garage sale on Saturday, July 9 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 22 Red Oaks Trail in Stittsville. In addition, there will be a cupcake and lemonade sale on the same

Indeed, it’s probably something to cheer about since it involves, what else, cheering, along with games and the use of a party room. Sound good? You bet it is and it is right here in Stittsville. And what’s even better, by booking a birthday party event at the Capital City Storm facility on Iber Road in Stittsville, you will be helping send a Capital City Storm senior cheerleading team to a national championship event in Florida next year. That’s because all proceeds from these birthday party rentals will be part of the fundraising being done to fund this trip to Florida. So, what’s it all about? Well, Capital City Storm, a local cheerleading organization, is offering its gymnasium facility on Iber Road for rent for
fun and active birthday parties for youngsters. Now, don’t worry, parents – the rental comes with experienced cheerleading team members, supervised by a certified coach, who will lead the group for one hour in games, stretches and even a fun cheer routine. Following this, the rental group will have use of a party room for another hour, during which they can have their own activities like giving presents and enjoying some treats. Rental of the Capital City Storm facility is available for only $150 for the two hour party period, with groups up to 15 children able to be accommodated. This offer, though, is only good on weekends.
