Rec centre naming rights could bring in $600K to city coffers BY BRIAN DRYDEN brian.dryden@metroland.com

Stittsville’s Goulbourn Recreation Complex could soon have a new name, but “Goulbourn” will remain in that name, the area’s councillor promises. Stittsville Coun. Shad Qadri is urging residents to let him know what they think about changing the name of the Goulbourn Recreaction Complex in exchange for $600,000 before the proposal goes for final approval to city council on April 12. The city’s community and protective services committee approved naming rights for the Goulbourn Recreation Complex on March 30. The new name would be Cardel Rec — Goulbourn in recognition of Cardel Homes, a home building company. According to Qadri, Cardel Homes would pay the city $600,000 over 15 years to ac-

quire the naming rights as has been done with other rec centres in the city. The offer will provide the city $40,000 annually which will be applied against the city’s target for sponsorship revenues. However, Qadri stresses that the arena, pool, meeting rooms, outdoor fields and other components of the recreation centre are not affected by the naming proposal. “The names of the Matt Bradley Arena and the Erica Wiebe Gymnasium will remain the same,” Qadri said. “I negotiated with city staff and Cardel Home to ensure that the name Goulbourn remain intact to honour our area’s rich historical background,” he said. The committee also approved the naming of two parks in the Abbotsville development. One future park would be named Lee Boltwood Park and another Susanna Kemp Park. — Files from Jennifer McIntosh

Public meeting for cell tower proposal BY BRIAN DRYDEN brian.dryden@metroland.com

Stittsville residents with questions or concerns about a proposed 50-metre communications tower going up at 145 Iber Road will have the opportunity learn more about the project at a special public meeting on April 12. Shared Network Canada (SNC) is proposing a 50m tri-pole communication tower to be constructed at 145 Iber Rd. The tower

will be used to offer space to multiple cellular carriers to enhance and support their networks. A small fenced area with a walk-in cabinet will be constructed at the base of the installation, according to information provided through Stittsville Coun. Shad Qadri’s website. A public meeting has been set for April 12 in the Main Hall of the Goulbourn Recreation Complex (1500 Shea Rd.) that starts with an open house at 7 p.m. and continues

until 9 p.m. OPEN HOUSE

The open house will run until 7:30 p.m. and be followed by a presentation about the project from 7:30 to 8 p.m. and then a question and answer session from 8 to 8:45 p.m. before closing remarks from 8:45 to 9 p.m. “I highly encourage any residents who live in the area to join this meeting and share their thoughts surrounding the project,” Qadri said.

House destroyed in fire SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

There’s nothing left of a home at 27 Fowler St. in Richmond except the basement foundation following a two-alarm fire on Friday afternoon, March 31. The address is on the west side of Fowler Street in the second block south of Perth Street. The Ottawa Fire Services were called by a resident at 3:02 p.m., reporting thick black smoke coming from the home. The caller confirmed that there were no persons still inside the home. The first firefighter on scene confirmed an active fire with smoke visible from the front door. Scott Stilborn/Twitter Firefighter crews began an agFlames roar through a house at 27 Fowler St. in Richmond on Friday afternoon, gressive attack on the basement March 31 as Ottawa Fire Services firefighters battle the blaze which displaced a of the home, while some firefightfamily of five. ers searched the upstairs and attic

of the home for any additional fire spread. At 3:24 p.m., the home was urgently evacuated by firefighters because the floor at the entrance of the home was collapsing. The firefighters all left safely with no injuries reported. Firefighters continued fighting the fire from the exterior, with particular attention paid to the basement, which appeared to be where the fire originated. Firefighters were assigned to salvage operations and attempted to protect items in the two-car attached garage. However, fire conditions continued to escalate and a second alarm was declared at 4:02 p.m. Firefighting crews continued to operate on the exterior of the

home for safety reasons. The fire was eventually deemed under control at 5:16 p.m. An Ottawa Fire Services investigator was dispatched to the scene to assess the damages and to investigate the possible source of the fire. Salvation Army and Red Cross personnel assisted two adults and three children who were displaced by the fire. Firefighting crews remained on the scene for a number of hours in the evening to complete operations and to ensure that the scene was safe. All that remained at the scene on Saturday was a massive pile of charred debris piled up in front of the foundation of the former house.

Quiz For A Cause raises $8,065 SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

The “Les Quizerables” team captained by Dan Scott won the 2017 Quiz For A Cause at the Community Bible Church in Stittsville. Finishing in second place was the “Quiz me, you fool” team captained by Jen Pattison, while the “Good Guess” team headed by Andrea Egilo finished in third place in the 15-team field. Other teams participating in this sixth annual trivia quiz night were "Group Therapy" (Heather O’Leary captain), "the Magnificent 8" (Chris Sturgeon captain), "Pigs Might Fly" (Steve Stewart captain), "Team Awesome" (Kimberly McBride captain), "the Alternative Facts" (Ben Helleman captain), "the Newbies" (Jan MacMillan captain), "Quiz Me Beneath The Milky Twilight" (Alex Hein captain), "You’re A Quizard, Harry" (Sacha Jackman captain), "the Numbskulls" (James Buckley captain), "We Dunno!" (Patti Black captain), "Google Masters" (Michelle Bentley captain) and "IDK" (I Don’t

Know, a youth team). The quiz consisted of nine rounds of 10 questions each. Participating teams also were able to pick up additional points by completing socalled “Pencil Problems,” such as anagrams and a logic puzzle. The ninth and final round this year was a totally audio round in which teams had to identify the voices heard in ten audio clips. The voices were of someone who is now deceased and hence the round’s title of “I Hear Dead People.” Among the voices were those of Alan Thicke, Mother Teresa, Carrie Fisher, Arnold Palmer, Stuart McLean, Nancy Reagan, Lou Gehrig and Winston Churchill. Again this year this, Quiz For A Cause was held to raise funds for the Community Bible Church’s work with the Seje community in Kenya. And a total of $8,065 was raised. This will help build thenext classroom at the school in Seje.

Spring, where are you?

here’s lots of possible talking points among friends and acquaintances these days. There’s Ottawa as a sanctuary city, the legalization of marijuana, the fentanyl drug crisis, the flood of refugees, the value of naloxone kits or the plethora of potholes in our roads this year. Lots of serious matters for a person to ponder, to comment on and to argue about. And then there’s Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations, the upcoming Tulip Festival, the Ottawa Senators Stanley Cup run and even the Masters golf tournament, if you want lighter matters in which to engage with friends or even strangers on the elevator. From a patriotic perspective, there are the upcoming Vimy Ridge celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of that milestone battle in Canadian history, an event generally acknowledged as being one of the foundational moments in the creation of the Canadian identity. Imagine the thrill of being there, as many Canadian students will be. So, lots to talk about for sure.

But the topic that seems to be at the top of any chat list these days is, what else, the weather. And these discussions are universally similar — like, just when is this ongoing, up and down winter, going to end. It has been like the Energizer bunny — it just keeps going and going and going! A couple of weeks ago, we moved the clocks ahead. Remember that adage: “Spring ahead, fall back.” Well, we may have sprung ahead but it wasn’t to spring but just to more of the same old, same old — cold winds and snow, with a tantalizing day of springlike sunshine perhaps thrown in, just to tease us. So, where are those April showers? Where are those warm early spring days that rejuvenate you after a long snowy, cold winter and make you look forward to the days to come. Instead, more snow, more cold, more winter. It is getting, we think, to be maple syrup time. This happens as spring breaks and winter is no more. Indeed, there is a reason why maple syrup is sweet — because spring itself is so sweet. But where, oh where, is it this year?

The Junos are a good way of raising consciousness about the musicians we produce, particularly those in the less commercial genres. The celebration should not be allowed to obscure the need for work to be done by artists, by governments, by the corporate sector, and by fans of the music. No matter where it is located, music does not support itself.

Market will mean city-like traffic

Editor: What were they thinking? Now that Stittsville has been approved by the City of Ottawa planning committee for a farmers’ market at the Village Square Park on each Friday starting June to October from noon to 6 p.m., residents can look forward to the frustration of city-like traffic on Stittsville Main Street during one of the busiest parts of the day and weekend. With the planned location of the market adjacent to the awkward intersection of Abbott and Stittsville Main Street, the normal day-to-day congestion we currently experience in that area will be increased. Currently, vehicles entering or exiting those streets are often hampered by Ottawa transit buses, school buses and transport trucks while waiting in slow lines to move forward, turn or exit. With construction of housing underway in south Stittsville, increased vehicular traffic will be the norm in the village centre. Indeed, the pitiful and seriously deteriorating conditions of lower Stittsville Main Street to Fallowfield Road is also cause for alarm. Monica Duguid Stittsville, ON

Article is bang on

Editor: The opinion article about hockey and the Stanley Cup is bang on. It is, in fact, “The Holy Grail” and happens to be the hardest trophy to win in professional sports. That being said, I believe that you have missed out on a great opportunity to promote the excellent Junior A and Junior B hockey that is being played right here in our neighbourhoods. Witness the Carleton Place Canadians, who have played in the National Junior A final each of the past three years. Other quality teams include Kanata Lasers, Nepean Raiders, Ottawa Jr. Senators, Smiths Falls Bears and Kemptville 73s. Tier 2 Junior B teams include Richmond Royals, Perth Blue Wings, South Ottawa Canadians, Ottawa West Golden Knights, and Arnprior Packers. All of these teams play within a 30-minute drive of Stittsville and charge no more than $10 admission. Every player on these teams is proud to put out his very best effort every game. They and the teams they play for should be better supported by all local media. The Senators and the Stanley Cup aren’t the only game in town. Doug Peckett Richmond, ON

Items needed for this include a double bed with a frame, mattresses, linens, a bedroom night stand, a kitchen table and chairs, two end tables, a coffee table, four lamps, kitchen items like spoons, a set of dishes, a set of cutlery, pots and pans, a small flat screen TV, an ironing board and iron, a microwave oven and an electric kettle. If you would like to donate any of these items, please contact Penny Gelinas at 613-825-5620 or via email at penella@sympatico.ca. Anyone who has a truck or van to help with the collection and delivery of these items should also contact Penny. Churches involved with the Kanata Stittsville Refugee Sponsorship Group include St. Thomas Anglican Church, Stittsville United Church and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, all in Stittsville; and Glen Cairn United Church, Kanata United Church, Trinity Presbyterian Church, St. Paul’s Anglican Church and St. John’s Anglican Church (South March), all in Kanata. *Stittsville fibre artist Frances Taylor will be among those participating in the annual Out of the Box Fibre Fling 6 Show and Sale being held at the Kitchissippi United Church on Island Park Drive near the Queensway on Friday, April 7 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 per person, with the event being held as a fundraiser for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. High tea will be held on Saturday at a cost of $10 per person. Frances will have four art pieces in the show, along with numerous wearable art and other items. One of her art pieces in the show is a piece called Measure for Measure — All’s Well That Ends Well, so named because she used text from these two Shakespeare plays in creating the work. She

attests the title seems to suit the work, because she struggled a bit with the piece, but it came out well in the end. For the item, she used paper from a very old book containing Shakespeare’s complete works. *You can do something special for Easter this year, like taking part in Ukrainian egg decorating. All supplies and instruction will be provided to allow you to embrace your inner artist self, and create a beautiful one-of-a-kind egg to take home and showcase on Easter. This Ukrainian egg decorating session is being held on Saturday, April 8 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Stittsville United Church. Cost is $20 per person and you must be 12 years of age or older. Prepayment is required. There are only 30 spots available, so quick action to reserve a place is recommended. Contact eurogonnawannapax@gmail.com to reserve a spot. All proceeds from this Ukrainian egg decorating session are going to the Guiding travel group 1st Europe 2019. *Stittsville photographer and author Sylvie Sabourin was recently interviewed by Ginette Gratton on the Entre Nous program on the French Rogers TV system. The interview is now posted on YouTube and is being added to Sylvie’s website. *City of Ottawa Stittsville ward Coun. Shad Qadri reports that blasting for the Potter’s Key subdivision north of Hazeldean Road and west of the Jackson Trails subdivision should be completed by Friday, April 28. There had been an earlier date of April 7 but the blasting is apparently running further behind schedule than first anticipated. Rock crushing on site will continue until June 30. The sewers and roads should be installed in the whole subdivision by this December. House construction is expected to begin this August and continue until December 2019. The first new homeowner is expected in the subdivision in March 2018. *A presentation on Canadian historic battlefields, which will cover memorials and cemeteries from Amsterdam to Paris, will be held on Tuesday, June 6 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Stittsville branch of the Ottawa Public Library. Online registration at www.biblioottawalibrary. ca is required. The presentation will focus on battlefields and memorial sites for the First and Second World War, as well as associated historic towns and villages. This presentation is particularly relevant this year, as Canada is not only marking the 150th anniversary of Confederation on July 1, but also the 101st anniversary of the Battle of the Somme — a major battle in the First World War which involved Canadian soldiers.

*The Catholic Women’s League at Holy Spirit Parish on Shea Road is hosting a fashion show benefiting local palliative care on Saturday, May 6. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. The show will feature the spring 2017 collection by Judy Joannou Designs. Tickets at $15 per person are available by contacting Claudette Langdon at 613831-1286. *Cathy Bureau, who is founder and president of the Goulbourn Girls Hockey Association and was an outstanding collegiate hockey player in the United States, was a guest on CBO Radio on Tuesday, March 28. She spoke about the threatened boycott of the women’s hockey world championships in the United States by the United States women’s hockey team, in a dispute with Hockey USA over payment of players. Cathy was in full support of the position of the players. The dispute did get resolved and the boycott ended, with the American team competing in the championships. *The ALE Lounge & Eatery in Amberwood Village will be an exhibitor at the upcoming spring Ottawa Wedding Show which is being held at the EY Centre in Ottawa this Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The show is expected to have over 150 exhibitors in total. *The Oasis in Kanata, a spot for caregivers of people with mental illness, is presenting “Caregivers and Trauma: Recognition and Healing” on Monday, April 17 at 7 p.m. at the Glen Cairn United Church on Abbeyhill Drive in Kanata. Those from Stittsville and Goulbourn are welcome to attend this free meeting at which Fatina Elkurdi, a clinical social worker with the Ottawa Anxiety and Trauma Clinic, will explain how caregivers can recognize trauma-related situations and compassion fatigue in themselves and what they can do about it. Visit www.TheOasisKanata.ca for details. *A couple of community events coming up in the Fairwinds community include an Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday morning, April 16 at 9 a.m. at Bandmaster Park, and the annual Fairwinds garage sale on Saturday, June 3. In addition, there are three occasions in which Fairwinds residents can help clean up the community in the city of Ottawa’s annual GLAD Cleaning the Capital campaign which runs from April 15 to May 15. On Saturday, April 15, there will be a cleanup event held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Bandmaster Park. On Saturday, April 22 at 10 a.m., there will be a community spring cleanup at Tempest Park, as well as a cleanup at Campobello Park. Volunteers are most welcome at these cleanup events.

Good Friday Walk of the Cross SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

When you hear the term “cross walk,” you might think of a street intersection with traffic lights to let you know when it is safe to walk across the street. On April 14, Good Friday, there will be a different kind of “cross walk” in Stittsville. In this Good Friday Walk of the Cross, a wooden cross will be carried down Stittsville Main Street to re-enact the walk Jesus took in Jerusalem carrying the cross from the place where he was sentenced to death to the location where he was crucified. This walk will begin on

Good Friday, April 14 at 9:30 a.m. at Stittsville United Church on Fernbank Road just west of Stittsville Main Street, and will then proceed along Stittsville Main Street to St. Thomas Anglican Church before eventually ending at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, a total journey of approximately 2 km. There will be a brief time of worship at each church including scriptures, dramatic readings, hymns and prayers to remind participants of the events of Good Friday and to help deepen their own spiritual experience of the walk. Those attending will be in-

vited to take turns helping to carry a wooden cross along the way. Similar walks will be held throughout the region, and indeed around the world, the most famous being along the Via Dolorosa (The Way of Sorrows) through the streets of Jerusalem. All are invited to join in this opportunity to share with others from the community in remembering the suffering and death of Jesus Christ in preparation to celebrate the hope of new life on Easter morning. For more information, please call Stittsville United Church at 613-836-4962.

tain an item which could be included in a silent auction which is being held at a “Rock Out For Jack” fundraiser for his seven-year-old son Jack on Saturday, April 15 at The Brass Monkey on Greenbank Road in Nepean. At Giant Tiger, owner Neil Campbell pulled Greg aside and told him that the store would start raising money for Jack that very afternoon, asking customers to donate $2 to the cause. Neil also welcomed the idea of displaying a few of the larger items that will be in the silent auction on April 15. Greg immediately went home and loaded up the silent auction items and copies of a flyer about the April 15 fundraiser in his truck and returned to Giant Tiger. He was told that the store had already raised $20, just in the little time that he had been travelling to and from home. Greg is just overwhelmed by the compassion and assistance that the Giant Tiger in Stittsville provides not just for this upcoming fundraiser on April 15 but for so many Stittsville causes and events. Both Greg and his son Jack are fighting medical conditions. Jack was born with severe disabilities and life-limiting conditions, requiring 24-hour nursing care. He is deaf with some vision impairment. He has had 19 surgeries in his brief life. Dad Greg has been diagnosed with high-risk melanoma, which he is currently battling. The family has no private insurance and are facing huge out-of-pocket expenses of over $33,000 a year. That’s why the upcoming “Rock Out For Jack” fundraiser at The Brass Monkey on Greenbank Road on Saturday, April 15 from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. is so important. It will be an evening of live music, dancing, pool and a silent auction, all for the benefit of Jack and his family. For more information, please contact

Greg’s daughter and Jack’s sister Elizabeth Brown at 613-808-2169 or via email at Elizabeth.brown1@hotmail.com. *You can participate in National Canadian Film Day 150 of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) by attending a free screening of Atom Egoyan’s award winning film “The Sweet Hereafter” on Wednesday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at the Landmark Cinemas in Kanata. Released in 1997, “The Sweet Hereafter” won at the Cannes Film Festival that year, swept the 1997 Genie awards and has been included in Canada’s alltime top 10 list released by TIFF in 2015. Set in British Columbia, the film stars Ian Holm, Sarah Polley and Bruce Greenwood in a story which deals with the impact and meaning of tragedy and the sense of community that binds people together. The Rotary Club of Ottawa — Stittsville is partnering with TIFF in hosting this free screening of “The Sweet Hereafter”. For a free pass to attend this screening, please contact Leo Maiorino of the Rotary Club at 613-371-6975. There are only a limited number of passes which will be provided on a first come, first served basis. *A 50-metre-tall tri-pole communications tower is being proposed by Shared Network Canada for a site at 145 Iber Rd. which is on the east side of Iber Road near where Harry Douglas Drive intersects with Iber Road. The tower will provide space to various cellular carriers to enhance their networks in the area. A public meeting consisting of an open house, a presentation about the project, and a question-and-answer session will be held on Wednesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex on Shea Road.

Being surrounded by the sweet smells of spring

A

udrey said it was nonsense. Spring didn’t smell any different than any other time of the year. And she practically yelled out “smell”. She was in a bad mood because her best friend Iva couldn’t come over that Saturday morning, because she had extra chores to do. But I knew for an absolute fact that the arrival of spring brought with it a special smell in the air. Mud. I could smell mud. It wasn’t an unpleasant smell, but once the snow melted and the ground was wet, I could smell mud. I would know spring would be soon upon us from the

smell. And there were other signs too. Just into the new year, Mother would have received her packets of vegetable seeds, ordered from the Steele-Briggs catalogue, and little slat boxes would be sitting all over the house. And I could see sprigs of vegetables pushing up, and what would be flowers coming through the earth. I would put my nose as close to the little plants as I could get without touching anything of course, and I would smell Spring. Some of the little flat boxes would be in the parlour, which would still be closed

off for the winter. Mother said some of the little plants had to be in a cool spot, and the room would take on the sweet smell of growth. The smell of spring. Once the winter was broken, Mother would tell Audrey and me to open the upstairs windows when we were doing our Saturday morning chores. Even though there was still a bite in the air, Mother ordered the windows open while we stripped the beds, dusted the furniture and the floors, and turned the feather mattresses. And wafting through the open window was the smell of spring And where I noticed it more than any other place, was when I went into the part of the barn

when they were full grown. And I would think it was the smell of new birth ... the smell of spring. Even the Northcote school began to smell differently. The boys big rubber boots

were exchanged for high top running shoes, so the smell of wet socks was no longer there, and the school took on a ‘cleaner’ smell, enhanced because Miss Crosby would have started leaving the door open for a spell when morning classes began. Sap boiling on the Findlay Oval, filling the kitchen with the sweet smell of spring, even when all the snow had yet to melt in the back yard. And one day I made the mistake of scooping up a small handful of mud at the back door and Emerson saw me. He ran right into Mother to tell her I was eating it. Which was a barefaced lie. All I wanted to do was put it to my nose. To breathe deeply its musty scent. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? units and 135 high-density units. Lot depths throughout the subdivision are typically 30 metres. A two-hectare park is located on the south central edge of the subdivision. A total of 13 streets are located within the subdivision with external access from the subdivision to Fernbank Road and Shea Road as well as to an adjacent new subdivision to the west.

Only single detached homes will be backing onto existing adjacent homes on Shining Star Circle and Friendly Crescent in the West Wind subdivision. Existing trees on the site could not be retained due to the density of the planned development as well as due to grading demands for the site. However, Tartan, the developer, will be planting about 800 trees on the site as development happens.

MARY COOK Memories where the sheep were kept. New lambs were arriving regularly, as they did every spring. I could smell the wool. To me it had an odour all its own when winter was breaking, and not like the wool on the sheep

The site is about 42 hectares in size, consisting mainly of agricultural lands with a hydro corridor crossing the eastern portion of the site. The site is located in the eastern section of the so-called Stittsville South Urban Expansion Area. The subdivision as proposed calls for about 720 dwelling units including 326 single detached homes, 26 semidetached dwellings, 233 townhouse

West Ottawa Business Excellence Awards BY JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Jack MacLaren Member of Provincial Parliament Carleton-Mississippi Mills

Vimy Ridge at 100 One hundred years ago this April, Canada triumphed in the First World War at Vimy Ridge in 1917. This was the first major allied victory which turned the tide of the war. The world has changed so much since the early twentieth century, but Canadian determination to fight for what is right remains the same. Freedom isn’t free. On this important anniversary, we will remember those who fought for the freedoms that we all enjoy today. We will remember those who sacrificed their lives. We will remember the wounded who carry the scars of battle. We will remember their families. We must always remember their bravery and honour their memory. There was a lot of buzz around the city as the Juno Awards, recognizing excellence in Canada’s music industry, were presented over the weekend. And there was a similar buzz, albeit more localized, a couple of days before as the West Ottawa Business Excellence Awards were presented at a gala ceremony at the Brookstreet Hotel. This “A Night With the Stars” gala, hosted by the West Ottawa Board of Trade on Thursday, March 30 saw eight businesses trading in the Nepean, Kanata, Stittsville/ Goulbourn and West Carleton area honoured for their commitment to business excellence and their contribution to the community with the receipt of West Ottawa Business Excellence Awards. In addition, awards were presented for business leader of the year and young entrepreneur of the year in the area. In the “New Business” category, Keynote Group, a firm specializing in employment services, was the winner, receiving the nod over the other finalists which included: Beyond Yoga Studio & Wellness Centre of Kanata; Collab Space, a business consultation firm; Dalcini Inc., which produces high-quality stainless steel containers; and Pita Pit, a Kanata quick-service restaurant. Winner in the “Small Business” category was Unposed Photography, which features photography with innovative approaches. Other finalists in this category were: Clariti Group Inc., a firm founded in 2014 which provides guidance in the fields of careers and leadership; Decorating Den Interiors: The CPI Team, an interior design company based on Iber Road in Stittsville; Jiffy Photo and Print, a Kanata full-service copying, printing and graphic design business; and U-Rock Music School, a Stittsville-based company that provides musical instruction to young musicians and singers and is now marking its 20th year in business. Finalists in this category included: Aperitivo at the Kanata Centrum; Boston Pizza on West Hunt Club Road in Nepean; NeXT restaurant in Stittsville; and The WORKS in Barrhaven. James Baker of the Keynote Group, an employment services firm launched two years ago, received the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. “This has been a hell of an experience,” he said in his remarks on receiving the award. “The best thing we ever did.” The Business Leader of the Year Award went to Kevin Ford, CEO of the publicly-traded Calian Group Ltd. in Kanata. He was described as a visionary who leads and inspires others, allowing them to achieve their potential. He noted that Calian offers a range of services serving the aerospace, communications and military sectors. A Wellhead Protection Area has been established around the well area to ensure that the activities of residents living in the vicinity do not adversely impact the drinking water supply as contamination can be expensive to remedy. The City of Ottawa encourages residents within this Wellhead Protection Area to help protect the underground aquifer by doing such things as properly disposing of hazardous waste, using environmentally friendly cleaning products, reducing use of fertilizer and de-icing salt, taking care when handling fuel, reducing stormwater by using a rain barrel, planting trees and washing a car at a facility which has a drainage system.

*The Richmond branch of the Ottawa Public Library has added a second weekly preschool program as of Wednesday, March 29. “Toddlertime with Christy” is being offered on Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. for children 18 months to three, along with a parent or caregiver. Councillor’s Column Keeping You Informed Stittsville Planning Primer – April 6th Dear Residents, I hope that you will be able to join me at the Stittsville Planning Primer being held on Thursday, April 6th to learn more about the planning process in relation to development in Stittsville. Planning and development in Stittsville is a vast topic and we are experiencing development throughout our community. I feel it is important to share planning information with the community as frequently as possible so that residents have a greater understanding of the development process and also know what to expect with new developments. The City runs Planning Primers at City Hall a few times a year so that residents throughout the City can learn more about the development process. I think these sessions would be of interest to Stittsville residents but I also know that residents in Stittsville are not interested in travelling to City Hall to attend information sessions and that is why I requested the City provide a Planning Primer in Stittsville. The Stittsville Planning Primer will cover the information presented at the City Planning Primers with a specific focus and examples to Stittsville developments. The Planning Primer is the perfect opportunity for residents and community associations to learn about the necessary background in understanding the development process. It is a great means of keeping our community educated and up-to-date on all things that are going on in Stittsville. A full detailed invitation with agenda is available for review on my website at shadqadri.com. The event will take place from 6:30-9:30 (the presentation will begin at 7:00) Thursday, April 6th at the Goulbourn Recreational Complex Hall A and will provide a condensed introduction with materials covered in the City’s Planning Primer 1 and 2. Seating is limited and will be provided on a first come, first serve basis. Be sure to visit my website shadqadri.com following the meeting to be able to view the presentation and additional materials.

Waste Management Update As previously mentioned in my column, Waste Management (WM) and the Province of Ontario recently made the decision to allow waste from Quebec, particularly the Outaouais, Abitibi-Temiscamingue and Laurentide areas, to be processed at the West Carleton Environmental Centre (WCEC). Further to this, the City of Ottawa’s legal staff in coordination with Mayor Watson, Councillor El-Chantiry and myself, provided a leave of appeal to the Ministry of Environment to amend these changes. I am pleased to share the good news that my office has heard back from Waste Management that following discussions with the City and the Ministry, WM has elected to not proceed with their proposal to include waste from portions of Quebec within the service area and that they will as soon as practicable take such steps as are necessary to amend the EA accordingly. I would like to thank the mayor and community members along with my Councillor colleagues who provided comments that helped to bring this decision to fruition. This was an accomplishment resulting from the cumulative efforts of our community members standing up for our neighbourhoods and our environment. I am happy to hear that WM has recognized the City’s priority to limit waste received to Ottawa and Lanark County while current EA recommendations include that of all of Ontario. With that in mind, I believe that it is important to reaffirm my support for the community’s opposition to any expansion of the Carp landfill.

Syrian refugee family is getting settled in Richmond SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

It’s a success story in the making — a Syrian refugee family that has settled in Richmond and is slowly on its way to becoming Canadian citizens of which everyone can be proud. The family arrived in Richmond just before Christmas, following a nine-month process of planning, paperwork, fundraising and waiting by the Richmond group that has served as the family’s sponsors. These refugees are not the ones being sponsored by the Richmond Village Refugee Welcome group, but rather by a private group of sponsors known as the Group of Five. The group includes Reinhard Rosch, Diane Adam, Jan Koiste, Louise Rosch, Jolijne Ubbink and Angela Bourne. They initially lived at Reinhard Rosch’s home in Richmond, but at the beginning of March, they moved into the

rectory at St. John’s Anglican Church. The rectory has been renovated with a new high efficiency furnace, updated electrical wiring, new carpeting and fresh paint throughout the whole building. All of the donated furniture has been moved in, and the pantry has been well stocked, so that the family can start cooking its own meals. Indeed, with all the furniture moved in, the place has a really nice cosy feel to it. The Richmond Group of Five is thankful to the St. John’s Anglican Church community for providing the family with a good deal on the rent and for all of its support for the project. The three members of this Syrian refugee family who arrived in December are husband Stephan Obadashian, his wife Salma Awad and their daughter Maritsa Obadashian. Daughter Maritsa has just celebrated her 16th birthday, and she has already made a lot of friends in Richmond and at Bell High School. She is enrolled there in regular Grade 10 classes as well as an ESL (English as a second language) class, which is offered to students whose mother tongue is not English. Just like other students, Maritsa takes a yellow school bus to school. Maritsa can also be seen regularly skating at the Richmond arena or tobogganing at the hill off Channonhouse Drive. Parents Stephan and Salma have been attending ESL classes at Holy Trinity High School on Katimavik Road in Kanata. It is not easy to acquire a new language as an adult, but they are showing much improvement. In fact, Stephan has found a job with FL Construction on Fowler Street in Richmond. This has put a temporary halt on his English lessons, but has accelerated his language learning to the total immersion environment of the workplace. As a result, he is getting better at understanding English by the day. For instance, he now knows when a person is joking with him. When his fellow workers told him not to work so hard, his re-

sponse was, “Have you ever been out of work for four years?” Salma is currently looking for a job in house cleaning, which she loves to do and which would give her a sense of purpose. Anyone who needs help with cleaning can contact her via email at rrosch@gmail.com. March 2 was a happy day, as Salma’s sister Maha Awad was welcomed to Canada. She had to submit a separate application to the visa office in Winnipeg, as she is not considered a family member. Her application took a bit longer to process, but she is now really happy to be reunited with her family. In Syria, she was working as a nurse, and she hopes to find work tending to sick or disabled persons. At present, Maha accompanies Salma to the ESL classes. Maha’s presence is also a boon to Salma, as she now has a companion when Stephan and Maritsa are not at home. Since Stephan has not gotten his driver’s licence yet (he has to write his G1 test), the family members are being driven everywhere by volunteer drivers. Some additional volunteer drivers would be appreciated, so that drivers are available when the current volunteers are unavailable due to other obligations. Anyone interested should send their phone number to rrosch@gmail.com. Another additional need is someone such as a retired teacher who would be willing to give English lessons to the family at their house, which would eliminate the need to drive them to the ESL lessons every day. Anyone who might be able to do this should email rrosch@gmail.com. Thanks to all of the community support, the family’s house is well equipped. The only things still needed are some light blankets and perhaps some towels. Some used bicycles are also needed. The condition does not matter, as they can be fixed up. The Richmond Group of Five is now waiting for Roupen, the family’s 24-year-old son. He is the only member of the family who is fluent in spoken and written English,

and was the group’s main contact in the sponsorship process. His application was submitted four months later than the others, as he stayed behind in Aleppo to write his final medical exam. He has been studying medicine for the past seven years at Aleppo University and has also successfully passed a test at the American University in Beirut that will qualify him to intern in the United States. While waiting in Beirut for the processing of his application, he has been quasi-interning at a clinic there. He is also studying for tests that he can write in Canada that will qualify him for an internship here. Although he says that he has to work hard for his marks, as he isn’t “all that smart,” most of his test scores are in the mid-90s. Right now, he needs some financial support from Canada to stay in his room in Beirut. His job pays him only some pocket money, as it is basically volunteer work. Paying jobs are hard to find in Beirut, as it has about a million refugees there — all competing for the few low paying jobs that are available. Hopefully, Roupen’s application will be approved soon; but it could take another three or four months. The Richmond Group of Five is very grateful for all the support it has received from the Richmond community in this Syrian refugee family initiative. This private initiative began when Reinhard Rosch was approached by a Syrian friend from New York who wanted to bring her cousins to Canada, since immigration into the United States seemed more difficult. At the time, private sponsorship of Syrians was only possible by forming a Group of Five sponsorship group. This Group of Five did its own fundraising separate from the fundraising efforts of the Richmond Village Refugee Welcome group. Reinhard is also involved with the Richmond Village Refugee Welcome group, serving as its treasurer. Didn’t get your

Fun bonspiel hosted by Richmond Agricultural Society BY JOHN CURRY

john.curry@metroland.com

You don’t see this in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts or the Tim Hortons Brier and that’s team names like “Home Brewers, “Sweeping Beauties, “Family Stones, “Rock Bottoms, “For Sheets Sake, and “Smoking Rocks. But teams proudly bearing these names and others took part in the this year’s fun bonspiel hosted by the Richmond Agricultural Society at the Richmond Curling Club. Curlers representing various agricultural societies and fair boards from the area took part in the day-long event that saw each of the 16 teams play two games. Overall winners at the end of the day was

a team from the Shawville Fair curling under the name “The President and Her Men. That’s because Sara Knox, president of the Shawville Fair, led the team that also included male curlers Tom Fahey, Richard Guilloum and James James Howard. The “Home Brewers team consisted of Richmond curlers Donald Sadler, Marlyn Storey, Rick Todd and David Rea. The team name evolved from the fact that all four of them are, at least in the view of skip Donald Sadler, experts in the area of brewing or at least consuming wine and spirits. David Rea, for example, who is now the second vice-president of the Richmond Fair Board, looks after the beer tent at the annual Richmond Fair. That’s where his expertise comes from. Rick Todd considers himself a

wine connoisseur – that’s his qualification for the team. Marlyn Storey is a mixed drinks specialist while Donald himself likes, only once in a while, mind you, a good scotch. So you can see that this team reflects its name – “Home Brewers. They finished tied for 11th place in the curling. Now, if it had been a drinking event, just who knows how high the team would have finished. All of the teams got in the spirit of the event. The “For Sheets Sake team not only had a eye-catching team name but each team member took on an appropriate nickname as well. So you had “Skipper Shawn Westerlaken, “A-Plus Adam Ford, “Stone Crushing

Courtney Fedorko and “Curling Carmel Jacob. The names, though, did not appear to help the team’s performance as it finished in a tie for 12th in the event. The “Sweeping Beauties team was skipped by Brian Kelly who had given his female team members an option: either call him “Prince or he would have to wear a wig. He ended up wearing a wig. And the team finished in tenth place. The top teams in the event were “The President and Her Men in first, “Jack in second, “One Arm Bandits in third, “Molson Export in fourth and “Richmond Fire in fifth.

Sanctuary city idea doesn’t fly with Coun. Qadri BY BRIAN DRYDEN brian.dryden@metroland.com

Declaring Ottawa as a “sanctuary city” is an idea whose time has not yet come, according to Stittsville Coun. Shad Qadri. Nothing Qadri has heard in the debate and discussions surrounding the issue has convinced him that declaring the city a sanctuary is necessary at this time. Qadri, who was born in Pakistan and emigrated to Canada himself, doesn’t think there is a need for Ottawa to declare itself a santuary city for refugees, something that many cities in the United States and some in Canada such as Toronto and Montreal have already done. “I do still believe that Ottawa, as it stands, is already a welcoming and accepting home to all and that items pertaining immigration status are best left in the hands of the federal government,” Qadri said. “Moreover, if we were to proceed with the sanctuary city idea, (city) staff suggest that there may be possible costs attached.” “I will not be in support of this motion,” he said, although at this point there has been debate at city hall about the idea but an actual council motion has yet to come forward. The issue was discusssed at the city’s March 30 protectice services committtee, where numerous delegations from the city’s social work and advocacy community spoke of the need for just such a declaration. The idea of declaring the City of Ottawa as a sanctuary city has most notably been raised by Somerset Coun. Catherine McKenney. Opposition to the idea that Qadri is expressing is echoed by many other city councillors.

Osgoode Coun. George Darouze said without input from city “Sanctuary cities are safer cities,” said Aditya Rao, with the Sancstaff, councillors are faced with a solution to a problem they aren’t tuary City Network, adding at the committee meeting that fear that even sure exists. But advocates say some of the concerns expressed illegal immigration will increase as a result is unfounded. about the idea are overblown. — Files from Jennifer McIntosh

Theme of the March 29 meeting of the Stittsville Toastmasters Club was 'National "I am in control" day'. He talked about how he has used this method to help him to be in more control in situations. At this meeting, the Stittsville Toastmasters Club welcomed its newest member, Jean Vickers. A NATION COMES OF AGE

Anniversary

T

his month marks the 100th anniversary of one of our country’s pivotal moments – the Battle of Vimy Ridge. It was on April 9, 1917 that four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force joined together in an effort to overtake the Germans who had succeeded in securing and defending the strategic ridge, located in the north of France near the town of Arras. The Canadians would pay a huge price for victory but in overtaking the enemy, once thought to be unbeatable, they accomplished something the Allies had failed to do on several previous occasions during the First World War. This battle represented a coming of age for the country. Still so closely tied to Great Britain, Canada distinguished itself for the bravery of its troops, its training and determination.

Two brothers, together forever

N

icole Chénier looks at two faded photographs and wonders what the two men in the black-and-white copy were like. She never met Olivier or Wilfrid Chénier. If the First World War – and the Battle of Vimy Ridge – had never taken place, she would likely have known her two cousins very well. Olivier and Wilfrid were brothers, growing up on a farm in nearby Buckingham, Que. They enlisted in the Royal Canadian Regiment the same day. They served together, and then died together the same day at Vimy at age 26 (Olivier) and 27 (Wilfrid). Today they are buried side by side, beneath the French soil. Nicole, who today lives in the South Keys area, says her father often told stories, but never had much to say about her cousins Olivier and Wilfrid. “I think my dad was too young,” says Nicole. “He didn’t know a lot about them. I think for some reason (the family) never talked about it.” Nicole has an elaborate package of research about the Chéniers (at one time spelled Chené) and the family’s centuries in Canada. The family dates back to the 1600s in France. Despite the 100 years since Vimy Ridge took the lives of more than 3,000 Canadian soldiers, there are still holes in families – and family histories. Those who died are still remembered, even as the decades pass.

If they had survived the war, Nicole is sure Olivier and Wilfrid would have returned to work on the family’s farm. She would have been much younger than them, but is sure they would have spent time together. “I think the family would have been really proud of them,” she said. “I’m sure they would have been heroes in the family.” – by Nevil Hunt, Metroland Olivier and Wilfrid Chénier died on April 9, 1917, the first day of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. They are buried in Cabaret Rouge Cemetery, near Souchez, France.

he memorial on the top of Vimy Ridge in France serves as a reminder to never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War. This year, April 9 marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. A grateful France granted Canada the land where the Canadian National Vimy Memorial rests. Designed in the 1920s by Toronto sculptor Walter Allward, the monument, which commemorates Canada’s contribution to the Great War, took 11 years to build.

The Goulbourn Basketball Association is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2017. Do you know what the fastest growing sport in the world is right now? If you guessed basketball, you’re correct! Since the original U.S. Olympic Dream Team made its debut in 1992, the sport has grown leaps and bounds internationally. The team featured NBA superstars including Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan. Canada is certainly no exception as the country is experiencing unprecedented growth and success in the game of basketball. The recent playoff success of Canada’s only NBA franchise — the Toronto Raptors — has certainly given the sport a huge boost as they made it all the way to the Eastern Conference finals last season, where they lost in six games to the eventual NBA champions, the Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James. Of the 41 countries that are represented in the current NBA, Canada boasts the largest number of players with eleven, including names like Andrew Wiggins, Cory Joseph and

Sacred Heart student to play soccer in States BY JOHN CURRY

john.curry@metroland.com

Sacred Heart High School Grade 12 student Chloe Doherty remembers picking dandelions when she started playing as a youngster, beginning at four years old. But over the years, she developed as a player and last year played at the very competitive provincial level. And this fall Chloe is off to Jackson State University in Mississippi where she will play NCAA Division 1 soccer, having accepted the university’s offer after visiting the campus in Jackson, Miss. and really liking it. Chloe started off playing soccer with the

West Ottawa organization, but switched to Ottawa South United for a higher level of competition. It was with Ottawa South United that she went to the provincial finals last summer, only to lose on penalty kicks. Chloe had been noticed by scouts after participating in a showcase event in Toronto. This resulted in a questionnaire and phone calls to find out more about her. This led to the offer from Jackson State University. Chloe will be leaving for Jackson State University in August where she will participate in pre-season training, with the season running through the fall. She describes herself as an “aggressive player” who likes to communicate with her

teammates on the field. Also describing herself as “pretty quick,” she says that she likes to use the space on the field and crosses the ball a lot. Chloe says that she fell in the love with soccer, adding that she will never forget those that she has met in soccer over the years. She says that her teammates become like family and she is looking forward to bonding with her teammates at Jackson State in the same way. She does harbour some hope that someday she might play for the Canadian national team, but she is taking a wait-and-see attitude, depending on how she does playing for Jackson State. She is not giving up on the

dream as yet. As for later in life, she sees herself volunteering or coaching in soccer, something that keeps soccer as part of her life. Chloe had been thinking of a career in the health sciences or physiotherapy, but because she likes organizing things and talking with people, she has lately switched her focus to perhaps sales or business and human resources, which is what she will be taking at Jackson State University. And while Chloe’s chief sport is soccer, she has played a number of sports at Sacred Heart. She says that she loves to play different sports as it allows her to meet new people and to enjoy different experiences. She played for the school’s volleyball team this year, having a lot of fun although the team’s record was not that good. She likes volleyball because there is a lot of quick thinking involved, as a player has to know where the ball is at all times and be prepared to be aggressive on the ball. Besides volleyball, other high school sports for Chloe include track and field, badminton and field hockey. She particularly likes track and field because it helps her with her running and her speed, which is helpful for her soccer. Indeed, she says that speed and footwork are something that can always be improved for a soccer player. Currently she continues to practice twice a week with her Ottawa South United soccer team as she looks forward to heading off to Jackson State University in August. Jackson State University has a 245-acre campus in Jackson, Miss. Established in 1877, Jackson State University teams, which are known as the Tigers, play in the NCAA Division 1. The university is perhaps best known for being the alma matter of American football star Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears of the National Football League.

ENJOY THE GOOD LIFE Do you dream of owning a home in a respectable upscale neighbourhood, but you don’t have the means to afford one? Or are you an otherwise happy homeowner who is ready to retire from gardening and lawn maintenance? A solution to try on for either case: a condominium!

If you’re wondering if condo living is a fit for you, be prepared to consider a few things. Every condo owner is the proprietor of his or her own unit and owns a share of the common areas, such as stairs, halls, patios, and laundry rooms. All the building’s co-owners must sign a condominium declaration,

a legal document which includes a description of the building, its purpose, condominium fees (for snow clearing, maintenance, and insurance for the common areas), regulations concerning co-owners’ meetings, as well as the powers and duties of the condominium’s board of directors.

There are several advantages to condo ownership: daily upkeep of the condominium property is not the responsibility of individual owners, and together, condo owners can decide to install a swimming pool or other communal equipment that might be cost-prohibitive for any one individual. Note that con-

Stittsville Coun. Shad Qadri says residents worried about possible damage to their properties while the rock blasting continues at the site should record any alleged damage that they believe their property has suffered, although there are strict rules and specifications in place to lessen the chances of that happening. “Some residents have expressed concern regarding what to do should they potentially experience damage due to blasting,” Qadri said. “I encourage concerned residents to send an email including photos and a description of any prospective damage,” he said. Residents should send that information to Kevin Lamer, program manager, development inspection at Kevin.Lamer@ottawa.ca. He urges any residents that do so to copy their emails to him as well at Shad.Qadri@ ottawa.ca.

Agnew, Brendan David

Rogers, J. Douglas

Following a courageous 2-year battle with cancer, Brendan passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at age 24. Grandson of Helen and the late Harold Agnew of Eganville. Beloved son of David and Line Agnew of Carleton Place. Cherished brother of Kelly Agnew (Michael McShane). Handsome boyfriend of Kendra Buchanan. Predeceased by his grandparents Marcel and Rolande Ouellette. He will forever be remembered by his many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Brendan maintained unwavering strength and an unmatched sense of humour through all of the ups and downs, right up until the very end. He persevered through his last semesters at school while undergoing many chemotherapy and radiation treatments, successfully graduating in 2016 with his Bachelor of Computer Science degree from Carleton University. His positivity and determination were inspiring to everyone around him. Love you, Brendan. Special thanks to Dr. Melissa Toupin, Dr. Natasha Kekre and all of the Hematology and Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) team members at TOH General Campus, and also to floor 5 West in supporting Brendan through two stem cell transplants. WWII Veteran Royal Canadian Navy October 5, 1920 - March 28, 2017 Our beloved Douglas died peacefully in Almonte on March 28, 2017. He will make his last trip to Sudbury where he was born and educated. Following the war he earned his Chartered Accountant’s Degree and established his accounting practice on Cedar Street in Sudbury, where he served the community for many years. He was married in 1950 to his beloved wife Muriel (nee Kettle). Doug and Muriel shared a great love for each other and for their daughter Mary-Ellen and son-in-law Roelof Datema. His two precious grandchildren, Laura and Geoffrey, brought him great joy. Doug was a thoughtful and generous man who enriched the lives of his loving relatives and friends. Following his retirement, Doug moved to Ottawa and then Carleton Place. Doug lived a life of faith and trust in God, and counted his Christian beliefs to be the bedrock for a blessed life. The family are very appreciative of the care received from Dr. William Potvin and Dr. Roger Drake of Carleton Place, The Rosamond Unit in Almonte, CCAC and Veterans Affairs. Friends visited the family at the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, 19 McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place, on Sunday April 2, 2017 for visitation only from 2 to 4 p.m. Visitation took place at Jackson & Bernard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury, on Tuesday April 4, 2017 from 7 to 9 p.m. Interment Wednesday at Park Lawn Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. As an expression of sympathy memorial donations to the Carleton Place Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. www.barkerfh.com

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

sudoku

Brsaeinrs

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 This may be a dull and lazy week, Leo. But that can be a good thing. This means you can recuperate from anything that has been ailing you, or just relax.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 You should get what you desire this week, Sagittarius. It may be a larger office or tickets to that big game you have been mulling over. The joy will be in the surprise.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, you have a knack for making money this week. Keep abreast of any business ventures that may cross your desk. This may be a lucrative time for you and your family.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 A massive incentive could be coming your way, Virgo. It’s best to be aware of all the goings-on inside and outside of the office. This can be a great chance to get ahead.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Do not worry so much about what others think of you, Capricorn. You have been traveling down the right path for some time, and others recognize that you have your act together.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Do not leave anything until the last minute this week, Gemini. It’s best to get all of your work done as early as possible, just in case some fun pops up for the weekend.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, it’s not in your nature to complain, and this week will be no different. Take your usual approach and confront a problem rather than complain about it.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 A big opportunity is mentioned in passing this week, Aquarius, and you begin to mull over the possibilities. This may be the right time to strike while the iron is hot.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, if you have been waiting for some sort of compensation, this could be the week that it arrives. Remain patient and that patience will ultimately be rewarded.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, this week your thoughts could turn to faraway places or daydreams may distract you from the daily grind. An upheaval of some kind is imminent.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, even when faced with some personal misfortunes, you are able to present a stiff upper lip and maintain a positive attitude.

Stittsville News - Thursday, April 6, 2017 39

With the snow finally behind us (I think), it is now time to look ahead to our other season in Ottawa: Construction. Once again this summer, there are a number of road projects that will impact Rideau-Goulbourn. I would like to take this opportunity to list those projects here. Since 2012, the City has made an increased commitment to resurfacing roads throughout the City of Ottawa. The total contribution to infrastructure renewal has increased year over year during that time. For 2017, our rehabilitation program has just been awarded to Cavanagh Construction and will include the following Rideau-Goulbourn roads: • • •

Shea Road (Hemphill Street to Fernbank Road) William McEwen Drive (South of Brophy Road) Bleeks Road (Dwyer Hill Road to 80m East of Munster Road)

Road resurfacing projects are to be carried out between April 24th and October 24th of this year. I will have more specific details on timelines in the coming weeks as the contractor presents their schedule. Another project that could have significant impacts for Rideau-Goulbourn residents will be the resurfacing of Prince of Wales Drive from Hunt Club to Strandherd Road. Gravel road resurfacing will be carried out on Bleeks Road, Bowrin Road, Conley Road, Goodstown Road, McLinton Road, O’Neil Road, Rushmore Road and Woods Road in Goulbourn. In Rideau, residents can expect to see gravel resurfacing on Callendor Road, Flood Road, Gilroy Road, Harbison Road, Mackey Road, Paden Road and Weedmark Road. This work involves the addition of new gravel, a reshaping of the crown of the road to ensure proper drainage and a calcium application to reduce dust. Gravel roads have a lifecycle of four years. The roads listed above were last done in 2013, except for McLinton Road, which was done in 2012. As for gravel roads being upgraded from gravel to hard surface, 2017 will see the completion of work on Mackey Road that begun in 2016. Additionally, Gallagher Road, from Mackey Road to Malakoff Road, will be upgraded from gravel to a hard surface. Pavement preservation projects will be carried out on Third Line Road (South of Lockhead Road), McCordick Road (Donnelly Drive to Mackey Road), Harnett Road and Donnelly Drive (Merlyn Wilson Road to the City boundary). Pavement preservation is generally a microsurfacing of the road which sees a layer of asphalt added to add life to the road at a fraction of the cost of resurfacing. These works have been awarded to Miller Paving with works scheduled to be carried out between April 24th and August 11th. If you have any comments, questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at Scott.Moffatt@ottawa.ca or contact me by phone at 613-580-2491. Stitttsville Peewee C2 Renegades are playoff champions SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

It was a winner-take-all game with the Lanark Carleton Minor Hockey League playoff championship title on the line, and the Stittsville Peewee C2 Renegades emerged as the champions. The Stittsville C2 Renegades won the Peewee C championship title with a 3-2 decision against the Stittsville C1 Ice Hawks. It was a hard-fought game by both teams, with the Renegades coming back twice from being down by one goal. The ultimate gamewinning goal was scored by the Renegades with a little over seven minutes left on the clock. After that, the Renegades put up a

strong defensive front to maintain the lead, with the Ice Hawks pressing hard to even the score, even pulling their goalie in the last minute of play. “The players put everything they had on the ice tonight, pushing hard right to the last second,” said Renegades head coach Paul Dannenberg. “This win represents a true team effort, each player put his full effort and ability into play, and most importantly they worked together and supported each other as a team. “This was a great finish to an amazing season for these young players. They learned to push themselves out of their comfort zone,

try new things and have fun doing it.” This decisive final game was the third in the playoff series between the Renegades and Ice Hawks, where the first team to achieve four points won the championship. The Ice Hawks won the first game of the series with a 3-0 victory. But the Renegades fought back in the second game of the series with a 5-2 win, setting the stage for the decisive winnertake-all game. Both teams had advanced to the championship final series after placing first and second in round-robin playoff action, defeating teams from West Carleton, Richmond and Osgoode Rideau.

Some of these best times go back to 2007, while some have been set this year. For example, Savanna Mouat set the club record in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle distance for girls aged 15 and 16 just this past February. Yet, Annie Jones holds the club record in the 200 backstroke event, a mark that she set in November 2007. It was in February 2010 that Jayden Cole set the club marks for the 50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 freestyle event in the category for boys aged 10 and under. What a season for the Stittsville Wheelers Bantam A’s. The Wheelers won the Lanark Carleton Minor Hockey League (LCMHL) league championship and then followed that up with the LCMHL playoff championship. But the season did not start out in champion-

ship fashion for the Wheelers, as after six games they had a record of one win, four losses and a tie. Hardly an omen of the team’s double championship season! After that slow start, however, the Wheelers came together and really started to play as a team.

It took hard work, synergy development and bringing out the best in one another’s game, with different players stepping up in different games, as the team turned things around. The Wheelers went on a streak of 16 wins, one loss and one tie in the rest of the regular season to capture the LCMHL league championship. So the Stittsville Wheelers Bantam A’s went into the playoff round with lots of confidence and momentum. The Wheelers went undefeat-

ed through the playoff action as did the other Stittsville Bantam A team, with the two sides tying each other in this round robin play. So, this set up a competitive championship series, with friends and former teammates on the two Stittsville teams competing for the LCMHL playoff championship title. The Wheelers pulled off back-to-back victories in this championship series to capture the LCMHL playoff championship banner, completing a fun and exciting season for the team.

‘Night of the Living Dead’ at Sacred Heart BY JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Here come the zombies! And the action involving zombies will not only be on stage at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville this week but also it will encircle the audience, making audience members feeling that they are right in the story. “It’s like you are actually there,” says Sacred Heart grade 11 student Nicholas Rocque, who is the director of production for this play “Night of the Living Dead.” The moment that an audience member walks in to the theatre, they will be in the story, Nicholas says, promising that the audience will be totally immersed in the story and play. The theatre will be darkened for nighttime with cemeteries and headstones all around. There will be nighttime sounds with zombies lurking around in the theatre. This is one of the most ambitious plays staged at Sacred Heart, director Rocque claims, saying that the play is something completely different than the normal school play and something that people will never forget. The play will be presented at the theatre at Sacred Heart this Wednesday, April 19; Thursday, April 20; and Friday, April 21, with a 7 p.m. start. Tickets at $5 each will be available at the door, with everyone in the community invited and welcome to attend. This play is Sacred Heart’s entry in the annual Cappies program, which promotes student achievement in the theatre arts, winding up with a gala evening at the National Arts Centre where the best individual performances, plays, and musicals are recognized with awards. This Sacred Heart production of “Night of the Living Dead” involves a cast of about 30 students, including the zombie roles. The play also has a full complement of tech, stage and costume crew. Auditions were held at the beginning of March. Since

then, rehearsals have been held for both the main cast members and also the zombies. In keeping with the play’s genesis in the 1968 horror movie “Night of the Living Dead,” the play’s costumes and makeup all feature black, white and grey. The only thing that is not black and white is the blood, which is plentiful in the play. Indeed, those under the age of 10 are advised not to attend the play due to the presence of so much blood in the play’s action. The stage will be transformed into a house

with boarded-up windows and a cellar, all in keeping with the setting of the play. The play, which will run about one hour, is filled with action. Indeed, director Rocque says that the play is “a huge bundle of conflict.” It all stems from the 1968 American horror film of the same name directed by George A. Romero, which has become a cult classic. This film was heavily criticized on its release for its explicit gore, but it eventually garnered critical acclaim and has been select-

Each week, a lawyer from the Kanata based Allan Snelling law firm will answer a reader’s question. A weekly guide in legal matters

Most first time home buyers are not familiar with the lawyer’s involvement in a home purchase and are surprised by all of the closing costs that are part of buying a house. Legal Process of Purchasing a House Once your offer to purchase a home is accepted by a seller, you or your real estate agent would send a copy of the offer to your real estate lawyer. Your lawyer will receive mortgage instructions from your bank or mortgage company, prepare all legal documents required to transfer the ownership of the house, register a mortgage on title to the property and perform all required searches. At least a few weeks prior to the closing date you would need to arrange for home (property) insurance and call utility companies to open your accounts. You will meet with your lawyer a few days prior to your closing date to sign all the legal documents. Your lawyer will let you know the amount of funds you would need to bring to their office in order to close.

My wife and I are buying our first home. Can you briefly explain to us the legal process of buying a home and standard closing costs?

On the closing date your lawyer will receive the mortgage funds from your bank, deliver the funds to the seller’s lawyer and register the transfer of ownership and the mortgage with the Land Registry Office. After all of these steps are complete, your lawyer will give you the keys to the property. This usually happens in the afternoon of the closing date.

Sacred Heart High School student Emily Partello will be one of the zombies in the play “Night of the Living Dead” which is being presented at the school this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, April 19, 20 and 21.

ed by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as a film deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The storyline involves a number of people trapped in a rural farmhouse which is attacked by a large and growing group of “living dead” monsters or zombies. This film revolutionized the horror film genre and effectively redefined the use of the term “zombie”, though the word was never used in the movie itself.

Vlado Hajtol was born and raised in Slovakia where he received his Master’s degree in Education.
