In 1921 Albert Einstein was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Physics for his simple explanation of how light can be absorbed by an element. When an element such as silicon absorbs light from the sun, it will emit electrons. Einstein’s work led to the development of modern solar cells. Solar cells convert light into electricity, also known as the photovoltaic effect. The photovoltaic effect was first demonstrated over 100 years ago.

This is a story about how a photon named Phyllis collided with an electron named Eddy and the adventures that follow their exciting encounter.

Eddy had just moved into a brand new solar panel in the desert. He liked his new place a lot and the weather outside was really great. Nice and sunny!

Little did he know what was about to happen next would change his life forever.

Eddy appreciates Phyllis for coming down from the sun and sharing her light so that he could be transformed into useful electricity.

Eddy is also very thankful to all the scientists and engineers who worked to develop solar energy. He hopes we will continue to make solar energy more efficient and cost-effective. Everybody should have access to solar power!

“Kim Auberson’s text and Blaise Auberson’s illustrations sparkle with wit, humor and love. Parents and children alike will treasure this delightful little book, and soon enough our kids will be the ones teaching us the ways of smart, sustainable energy. A marvelous contribution that couldn’t be more timely!” — Dr. Alexandra von Meier Professor, Sonoma State University Research Coordinator at California Institute for Energy and Environment

“My little girls loved this book; they were all smiles! This book is engaging, innovative, fun and will embrace the open, thoughtful minds of our young children. In the coming age of a renewable energy world, Eddy the Electron Goes Solar will become an integral part of educating our children about solar energy as well as opening their minds to exploring the possibilities of creating a better, greener, cleaner world for all of us.” — Dr. Tom Czyz Managing Partner, Global Renewable Energy

“What a fun book. So well written and so beautifully illustrated! Kim Auberson has done a wonderful job of taking a very complex scientific concept and turning it into something fun that everyone can understand, and enjoy. Over the next 15 years our stodgy world of electricity is going to go through remarkable changes that will forever alter the way we think about electricity. These changes will include new technologies such as smart-grids and photovoltaics and the next generation of children should comfortably understand how this new electricity paradigm will affect their lives, much the same way that children today understand the internet and how it continuously changes their lives. Eddy the Electron Goes Solar is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the future of electricity and for every parent who wants their children to be comfortable with how their world is changing. I love this book!” — Tom Rooney Former CEO, SPG Solar
