The St. James Center for Spiritual Formation announces a wonderful speaking series to be presented during the Friday Lenten Gumbo lunches. Six gifted preachers from various religious traditions are scheduled to speak on successive Fridays, in the church, from 12:05 to 12:30 p.m., so attendees may enjoy gumbo then the speaker, or the speaker, then gumbo in Bishops Hall! Fr. John Moloney was husband, father, and a priest in the Episcopal Church. He served as Prior of the St. James Center for Spiritual Formation for a short seven months before losing his battle with cancer in March 2009. Despite his short tenure here, Fr. John touched many lives and to this day is remembered with great fondness. As we gather to celebrate the inaugural year of the Preaching Series, we honor Fr. John, who indeed was a great preacher.
Gumbo 2015 co-chairs Mary Pesses and Kelly Williams invite you to join the fun and fellowship as a Gumbo volunteer! Gumbo 2015 opens on Friday, February 20, and volunteers will be needed each Friday during Lent to help host lunches in Bishops Hall, deliver take-out orders to waiting vehicles, and even support the volunteers! Pre-sale “dipping” and Sunday quart sales could use your help, too. You can view and sign-up directly on the volunteer sheet, here. If you can’t help at church, spread the word about Gumbo where you are! Click here for a downloadable flyer you can print and put on the bulletin board at work, the gym, etc. And, here’s a downloadable to-go menu form, so you’re ready to place your telephone order for walk-in or drive-thru pickup. In the Footsteps of Saint Patrick and the Celtic Saints CSF Pilgrimage to Ireland and Brittany: September 14-26, 2015 Led by Reverend Marcus Losack Join us on a journey back in time to visit places made sacred with the worship and ministry of St. Patrick and the early Celtic saints. On the first part of our pilgrimage, we’ll visit the famous high crosses at Monasterboice, say prayers in churches founded by St. Patrick in Downpatrick and Armagh, and walk the ancient historic sites at the Hill of Slane, the Hill of Tara, Navan Fort, and Newgrange.
Above: “A high cross and round tower at Monasterboice, Ireland” by Kevin King. Licensed under Creative Commons via Wikimedia Commons. Left: Hill of Slane; and below: Mont Saint-Michel, Creative Commons license.
The second half of our pilgrimage takes us by overnight ferry to Brittany, where we will visit the place that local tradition holds is the site of St. Patrick’s childhood home. In addition, we’ll visit Mont St. Michel, several churches and abbeys with historic connections to St. Patrick and St. Columbanus, and other sites of religious and historic significance. Our pilgrimage leader, Marcus Losack, has done extensive research on St. Patrick and has published several books supporting the tradition that the patron saint of Ireland was kidnapped from his home in Brittany, not Britain. Losack is an Anglican priest, teacher, and author with over twenty years experience as a pilgrimage leader. Each day we will gather for reflection and prayers, share meals, and build friendships and memories as we follow the path of these early Celtic saints. This pilgrimage to Ireland and Brittany is limited to 20 registrants, so register soon. Several from our 2014 pilgrimage to Ireland have already signed up for the 2015 pilgrimage to Ireland and Brittany.

Youth Events and Fund Raisers Confirm Not Conform What it is The Book of Common Prayer defines confirmation as “the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop.” A more simple definition is that confirmation is a public reaffirmation of the baptismal vows. In the past, confirmation was required by the Church to complete baptism. However, that outlook has changed, and all members who are baptized are considered full members of the Church. The Curriculum The program we use at St. James is called Confirm not Conform (CnC). CnC is a youth confirmation program that takes confirmation seriously. It exposes the youth to a range of topics including sacraments, creeds, prayer, other religions, and serving others. It’s a place to ask questions, express their doubts, and discover what they truly believe. CnC emphasizes finding one’s own voice rather than simply conforming to an external standard. It is a program that respects the work youth and adults do
as they explore their faith. It serves as a safe place for people to explore what they believe. As hinted earlier, confirmation is a very personal journey and exploration of faith. That being said, if your child has no interest in the process, it is more than acceptable for them to wait until they are ready. There is no “official” age for one to participate in confirmation, and some individuals are ready earlier than others. We generally recommend that participants at least, be enrolled in the eighth grade. It should be understood at the beginning of this process that confirmation is a commitment of time and effort for both parents and children with classes meeting almost every Sunday aftgernoon between now and the confirmation service in early May. What Do They Get Out of It:
For Kids:
• The opportunity to make new friends or deepen friendships • The opportunity to have an impact on the work of the church • The opportunity to explore and decide what you believe and how you want to live that out.
For Parents:
• The opportunity to see your children take responsibility for their own spiritual development and to become leaders in their own right • A program that integrates your children into the life and leadership of the church. • A program that helps youth explore what they value and act on that
What is Required of Parents:
• Getting your child to and from confirmation lessons and activities • Planning the reception for after confirmation service • Encouraging your child to see this as an opportunity and not a burden
What is Required of Parishioners:
• Encourage the young people you see involved in the CnC course • Offer to step up and help if you see a facet of this program of interest • Support these young people through this stage of their journey by attending the iConfirm service Classes begin Sunday, January 25 and run through April before the iConfirm service shceduled on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. with Bishop Thompson, presiding.

Increased costs to meet new postal regulations and fees have forced us to terminate automatic mailing of The MESSENGER to parish households. Readers are encouraged to use the online version to enjoy color photographs and graphics, easy links to contact information, maps, additional information and reference materials, and more. If you know of someone who cannot receive the electronic version, nor is able to pick up a paper copy available in the narthex, foyers and vestibules, please share their name with us so other arrangements can be made — or better yet: pick one up and bring it to them on a visit, yourself!
We proclaim Christ crucified and risen, and invite you to join with us in ministry together in his name.

Lenten Busy Person’s Retreat
Suzette Tannehill hosts the Wednesday, February 4 gathering of the Joan of Arc Study Group, at noon. Martha Yancey will present the lesson and art on St. Patrick. All women of the parish are invited! R.s.v.p. to Nina Broyles at ninabroyles@cox.net.
The Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana and the St. James Center for Spiritual Formation are sponsoring two important opportunities to observe a personal Lenten discipline; one-day retreats led by master retreat leaders, one for men, and one for women, both at the Solomon Episcopal Conference Center in Robert.
Mom-to-Mom Groups next meetings St. Mary’s Mom-to-Mom Ministry is a group of mothers
who have children under the age of five, and who would like to gather once a month for prayers, friendship, and fellowship. The evening group next meets on Thursday, February 12, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall Parlor. The daytime group has cancelled their February meeting, due to conflicts with Day School events, Mardi Gras, and Gumbo but will meet on Friday, March 6, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., in the vesting room off the Parish Hall foyer. Nursery care is provided courtesy of the St. James ECW. If you would like more information or to reserve child care, please contact Mary Boutwell, 225-387-5141 ext. 229.
Men’s Retreat: Saturday, February 21, 9:00 - 3:00 The men’s Busy Person’s Retreat will be directed by the Very Rev. Dr. Andy Andrews, former curate at St. James and now Dean at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Memphis, Tennessee, with the focus From Outer Success to Inner Strength. Women’s Retreat: Saturday, March 7, 9:00 - 3:00 The women’s retreat will be directed by the Rev. Dr. Mitzi Minor, Professor of New Testament at the Memphis Theological Seminary. Her retreat focus is Our Grandmothers Have Something to Say: Spending Time with New Testament Women. Register Now! The cost for either retreat is $35, including lunch at the Center. Register with your check payable to St. James with “CSF Retreat” in the memo line, or online here. Please do not let the cost of the retreat prevent you from attending, but contact Prior John Pitzer for information about scholarships. A limited number of rooms have been reserved at the Conference Center for participants who would prefer to arrive on the Friday evening before the retreat; this would not include dinner at the Center. Rooms are on a first-come, first-serve basis with payment to secure your reservation, online, or via check.
