HILL STRONG! KOALA STRONG! We are proud to have a variety of sports that have a combination of highly competitive teams, a rigorous practice/workout program, and fun-filled seasons that build values such as teamwork, determination, camaraderie, and perseverance. As Koalas, we pride ourselves in striving for victory with integrity and honor. We have a gymnasium full of banners that prove how successful our teams have been in the past, and it is a reminder of what our athletes currently work towards. We are a member of the Girls’ Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) and represent our school with pride both on and off the field. Many of our athletes have gone on to represent their colleges in NCAA competition in all divisions. I hope you will consider being a part of one of our teams here and fully embrace our Koala Pride. If not, I certainly hope to see you on our sidelines, in our stands, or watching a live stream event to support and cheer on our athletes.
ATHLETICS Fall Season: Cheerleading, Cross Country Track, Soccer, Tennis, and Volleyball. These teams may have mandatory practices that start in the middle of August and medical forms for these athletes must be submitted by July 1. Also, if you plan on participating in Softball, a medical form is also needed by July 1. Winter Season: Basketball, Bowling, Swim, Archery and Indoor Track Spring Season: Outdoor Track and Field, Softball, Golf, Lacrosse, and Flag Football. (Dates and season may be subject to change according to Covid Safety Regulations.) FLAG FOOTBALL This will be Hill’s first year with Flag Football as a sanctioned CHSAA sport. It is a Spring sport and will officially start in early March. With the increased popularity of this sport, we aim to further develop our program to be highly competitive. Off-season conditioning and workouts will begin in January. There will be off-season workouts over the summer as well in order to gauge interest and skill level. During the season, we work on conditioning, skills, and tactical training in order to be highly competitive in games. VARSITY SOFTBALL The SJHA Softball program currently consists of a Varsity team only. However, we are looking to add players to the program to build a JV team as well. First tryouts are held in the beginning of the school year, typically during the middle weeks of September. Any students interested in trying out for softball are also encouraged to attend our winter workouts beginning in early January. These workouts serve as secondary tryouts and include conditioning, fundamental skills training and a variety of drills that will help players develop both individual and team skills. Team selection and the official start of the season will start in early March. We participate in a fun, team bonding, spring training trip to Myrtle Beach during Easter break. VARSITY SWIM The St. Joseph Hill Academy Swim Team has won the city GCHSAA League Champion Title several times. Joining the swim team allows you to compete against the best schools on Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens. If you are interested in swimming competitively in high school, joining the team will be a lesson in dedication and sportsmanship. Swim practices will be held at the College of Staten Island, on Victory Blvd., and Wagner College on weekday evenings from the end of September to the first week of February. Swim meets are held on Sundays. The meets alternate between St. Francis College (downtown Brooklyn) & CSI. TRACK CROSS COUNTRY, INDOOR AND OUTDOOR 2022 Archdiocese Indoor Track and Field Champs 2021 XCountry NY Sectional Champs Track consists of 3 seasons: Cross Country (Fall), Indoor (Winter), and Outdoor (Spring). The better runners participate in all three seasons, but some student-athletes make a good transition to and from other sports. Basketball players often use cross-country for conditioning. Soccer players will join the Indoor and Outdoor Seasons. We welcome runners of all abilities. This team isn’t only about competition and training. It’s about having fun and making new friends. Cross Country is competitive running that takes place on wooded trails with uphill, downhill, and flat terrain. Freshmen run races of 1.5 miles, while Varsity runners run 2.5 or 3.1-mile races. Competitors need to maintain a high level of aerobic conditioning, so dedication is a must. Training starts in the middle of August and the season ends in late November. The meets are held in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx and Clove Lakes Park here on Staten Island. The practices are held at Hill and at Clove Lakes Park. Indoor is the winter season. Training begins in early December and the season ends in early March. The practices are held here at Hill and the meets are held at the Armory Track Center in Manhattan. The competition consists of individual and relay races around a 200 meter oval track and field events. Events include: sprints (55 to 400 meters), middle distance (600 to 3000 meters) and field events, such as jumps, hurdles, and shot put. Outdoor is the spring season. Training begins in early March and the season ends in late May. The majority of meets are held on Staten Island and practices are at Hill. JV AND VARSITY VOLLEYBALL VARSITY VOLLEYBALL 2021 STATEN ISLAND CHAMPS AND CITY CHAMPS Hill's Volleyball Program has gone undefeated on Staten Island for many years and competed in a number of playoff games. Our JV program lays down a strong foundation from technique and volleyball skills to team bonding experiences. Our Varsity program expands on the skills learned on JV making our programs extremely competitive. The Volleyball program has a successful and proud history. With coaches passionate about the game (two of which are Hill Volleyball alumni), the volleyball program is the perfect place for competitive, dedicated, and hardworking athletes who are committed to working together as a team. This upcoming season one of many goals is to train a respectful and talented team, go undefeated on the island and continue to the playoffs.
