OUR VALUES Dear The Clubs by JOE Member, As I write this letter, I am reminded of just how important it is that we are continually searching to provide even more value to our Members. Whether it’s the expansion of club facilities, improved greens on a course or some other amenity, everything we bring to our Members has been carefully sourced and is the result of our listening to Members and their ideas for how we can make our facilities worldclass. Our goal at The Clubs by JOE is to create offerings that can rarely be found in other clubs. We know this is a tall order. This summer, we opened a large addition to WaterSound Beach Club. Recognizing that Members wanted the convenience of graband-go food to go along with our existing casual dining restaurant, we engaged DAG Architects to design a new food service facility that would blend architecturally with the existing buildings while providing convenience to Members. The result is an almost seamless design that truly exudes the coastal feel expected of the Beach Club. Wide verandahs with casual chairs and tables provide for a quiet respite from the Florida sun. Top it off with sufficient ceiling fans, and you will find the new addition a great place to enjoy a new twist on an old palate. This new building will house Costa Chica, an entirely fresh approach to casual dining and graband-go. Inspired by the bright colors and authentic cuisine of Mexico, this restaurant is a brand-new dining concept along 30A. The food promises to be spectacular. This casual poolside eatery features a walk-up counter, patio seating and an adjacent full bar. The fresh, south-of-the-border-

style fare will include tacos and other Mexican favorites with a hint of the American South. And if tacos aren’t enough, the connoisseur of sweets will find desserts, such as customizable giant ice cream sandwiches and more. Members and guests will not be disappointed! As we move into summer, please allow me to thank you for your continued support of our efforts. Without you, The Clubs by JOE just wouldn’t be the same. All the Best,

The zero-edge pools provide a safe entry point for children who find splashing their friends to be the most fun.

THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT 30A has come to be known as a very special place. Not just the road but all that the road leads one to. The sugary white sand beaches, emerald waters, calm breezes, magnificent sunsets and unspoiled dune lakes all blend together to create the perfect backdrop for a lifetime of memories. “Water seems to elevate the senses, and when you add in the Gulf of Mexico and our beaches, it becomes the perfect antidote for just about anything, says Pat Ballasch, a Partner at DAG Architects, the firm designing the recent expansion to WaterSound Beach Club.

Grabbing an afternoon refreshment with friends is the perfect way to end the day.

The proximity to the water makes WaterSound Beach Club very special. “Beginning at the pool and reaching across the dune lake to the Gulf, water serves to both stimulate and soothe. We took our cue from what one sees at various times of the day,” said Ballasch. Shake shingle siding, cool colors and casual design elements all serve to accentuate the newly expanded space. And the fact that the new building elevation rises above the dunes to create unobstructed views to the horizon is an added plus. For some reason, when people are around water, they just naturally get hungry. From the beginning, the Club had a wonderful restaurant and bar, where Members could drop in for a meal or grab a cocktail with friends on the secondfloor verandah. Members and guests who haven’t visited for a while will be thrilled to see some great changes that have taken place at the Club. This year’s addition of the new Costa Chica restaurant comprises just over 1,700 square feet and includes a casual restaurant, bar and lots of seating. Designed by DAG, the new facility is complimentary to the existing structures. Ballasch says his design intent was to celebrate the style of architecture that is so

fitting for WaterSound. In particular, he wanted to frame the building in such a way as to clearly announce the new entry to the entire amenity venue. “We sought to make the transition from the parking lot into the Club area easier to find, and guests will be happy that a sloping ramp now takes them into the heart of the Club grounds. From there, they will simply make their way left to what is the original restaurant and bar, now known as 30.86, straight ahead to the dune walk-over platform or right to the new 7,000-square-foot pool and Costa Chica restaurant and bar,” he says. “The new building incorporates the restaurant and a much larger bar area; and with its higher elevation, Members and their guests will get unobstructed views of the pool, dune lake and, of course, our famous sunsets,” says Patrick Murphy, Senior Vice President of Operations for The St. Joe Company. A few years ago, as Membership continued to grow, The Clubs by JOE decided to add a second building with a casual style fooderie. “It is unlike any other restaurant on 30A. Inspired by the bright colors and authentic cuisine of Mexico and the laid-back beach lifestyle found here, Costa Chica is a brand-new dining

concept,” says Mike Jansen, Director of Club Operations. The casual poolside eatery also features a walk-up counter, patio seating and an adjacent full bar. Its fresh, South-of-the-Border-style fare includes nachos, tacos, salads and other Mexican favorites prepared with a hint of the American South. Costa Chica also has mouth-watering signature desserts, such as giant customizable ice-cream sandwiches. Bet you can’t eat just one! With a casual luxury that underpins the overall brand promise of WaterSound

Poolside cabanas with oversized lounges are perfect for relaxing.

Beach Club and The Clubs by JOE, this new dining destination is sure to become a family favorite. “We of course wanted the building to not only be complimentary in substance and style but to be very functional for serving food and beverages. Ample space for tables and chairs under one roof makes for a great spot to get out of the sun to relax, grab your favorite Mexican dish and cocktail and enjoy the gulf breeze augmented by large ceiling fans,” says Curtis Brooks, WaterSound Beach Club Manager.

Most days, sun worshipers can be seen taking a leisurely nap, reading the latest hot novel or catching up with friends alongside one of the pools. With the expansion, the Club now offers two 7,000-square-foot pools with 39,000 square feet of deck to provide Members with ample seating. To put that into perspective, the pool area alone spans enough space to fit an average Publix. Both pools are zero-entry, making them ideal for smaller children to splash and play within reach, and the watchful eye of mom, dad or grandparents.

With such beautiful, open space comes opportunities for weddings and receptions. Each year, the Club will typically have up to eight nuptials. “We limit the number of weddings so as to not inconvenience Members,” relates Madison Smediendorf, the Clubs Wedding Sales and Service Manager. Smediendorf says that while most are relatively small in terms of guests, the occasional wedding party of 100 or more does occur. No wonder that some Members find the Club to be the perfect spot to say, “I do.” A sunset ceremony on

the beach, barefoot in your wedding gown, can only be topped off by a nighttime reception poolside. Delectable dishes, casual cocktails and sharing the moment with friends and family set the stage for life thereafter. As has been said many times, the beach here is irresistible. Whether it’s a casual stroll along the water or a day in the sun, very few clubs have what can be found at WaterSound. But those days of dragging chairs and umbrellas down to the beach are long gone. Members enjoy the ability to just go to the beach knowing their chairs and umbrella are already there and waiting for them. Suntan lotion, sunglasses and your favorite book is all you must worry about. And, you can grab a burrito, cocktail, or both, on your way down the elevated walkover to the beach. For Members who are always searching for their next competitive event, a volleyball match might be underway on the beach. Jumping and spiking not your thing? Try paddleboarding. Once you have mastered the art of standing up to paddle, there is no doubt it will become a favorite pastime. But for those challenged by standing and paddling, kayaks have also grown to be a popular amenity among Members. What better way to enjoy the dolphins, which also love the colorful waters of the Gulf of Mexico? Tennis anyone? WaterSound Beach Club has two new courts that are exceptional in every way. The Clubs by JOE’s tennis instructor, Barry Webb, is available by appointment to help Members and guests improve their serve, followthrough or recovery. The summer months generally see an increase in court usage, and everyone is encouraged to refer to the website — ClubsByJoe. com — for tennis events and schedules. It goes without saying, but times arise when the kids tire of hitting the tennis ball, body surfing or pool activities and they need to find a cooler spot to relax. The Club’s game room is the answer to their quest for a stretch of video gaming. Located near 30.86, Kids Club offers video games, air hockey, board games and arts and crafts. So, when the kids have mastered the art of the beach, they can brush up on the latest game or craft with newfound friends. It is often said that sunsets along this glorious stretch of beach are unmatched. As the sun sets across the water, another fabulous amenity unfolds. Undoubtedly many Members can harken back to days gone by when bonfires and s’mores would serve as a perfect ending to a perfect day. That’s true even today. Members can order up a beach bonfire for their next get-together. Complete with a firepit of stacked wood and enough chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers to satisfy the sweet tooth of children and adults alike, the sound of a crackling fire and the distant sandpiper calling for their mate, rounds out another day at the beach. It is amazing when one thinks about the plethora of amenities offered at WaterSound Beach Club. So, as the summer unfolds and you find yourself looking for something to do, remember that your Club has it all.

HURRICANE MICHAEL’S MASSIVE destruction in Florida’s Panhandle was hard to describe to anyone who didn’t actually see it. Among our neighbors in the region, we saw so many people on the streets with vacant, far-away stares, tens of thousands rendered instantly homeless or living in broken houses. We can’t let them and so many others hurting in the region be forgotten. After the storm, we launched an initiative that aimed to keep the region’s ongoing needs, challenges and opportunities in the statewide and national spotlight. In partnership with Sachs Media Group, Rebuild 850 will keep the long-developing story of the Florida Panhandle’s recovery before the public for as long as it takes. It seeks to galvanize support to meet the long-term needs of the region that aren’t covered in any other way. It’s gratifying that so many partners instantly stepped forward to pledge their resources to this effort, including Volunteer Florida, the Florida Chamber of Commerce, the

DONATE Financial support is needed to solve myriad problems and meet scores of human needs. Contributions to Rebuild 850, administered by the Volunteer Florida Foundation, will be directed to nonprofit

groups that are meeting critical human needs, such as temporary housing for the nearly 20,000 people rendered homeless. VOLUNTEER Volunteer Florida is the state’s central organization to recruit volunteers and match them to community needs. Rebuild 850 will let people know where to best focus and apply their helpful efforts. VISIT While Panama City proper was decimated by Hurricane Michael and faces a longterm recovery, nearby Panama City Beach was largely spared. Coastal Panhandle towns depend on tourism for survival. If vacationers stay away thinking that all their favorite beach towns were hit, that would bring a second economic blow to the region. So, let’s all plan a next vacation in a Panhandle Florida coastal community

that is open for business — Rebuild850. org can help you find them. INVEST Florida Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Mark Wilson notes that this is an ideal time for Panhandle investment. Significant federal recovery dollars will be flowing into the region, a large workforce has been displaced and is ready to work at new jobs, and some beach communities need to rebuild. Those who have private funds to invest can be part of reimagining and boosting the future. If you drive past the miles of snapped pine trees and tarped roofs, surveying Hurricane Michael damage, you come to a stretch that’s nicknamed Florida’s “Forgotten Coast.” Rebuild 850 seeks to make sure our beloved Panhandle is never forgotten and that we keep the region’s needs front and center until its recovery and rebirth are complete.

Allan Bense and Will Weatherford are former Speakers of the Florida House of Representatives who created REBUILD 850 to maintain focus on Hurricane Michael-damaged communities’ ongoing needs. Gwen Graham served from 2015-2017 as U.S. representative for Florida’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes many of the counties hardest hit by Hurricane Michael.

GOING WILD is Only Natural

Rescue organizations work around the clock to nurture Northwest Florida’s nature BY THOMAS MONIGAN // PHOTOGRAPHY BY TODD DOUGLAS PHOTOGRAPHY

Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge executive director Carol Andersen spends some quality time with Merlin, an umbrella cockatoo and a refuge “ambassador.” The refuge obtained the bird after it had been subjected to a high-stress environment that caused it to pluck out its feathers.

NORTHWEST FLORIDA IS THE SIXTH most bio-diverse area in the United States. And because nearly 40 percent of the Emerald Coast is natural green space, preserved state parks and wetlands, wildlife is abundant. Finding teeming sea life, including loggerhead sea turtles and bottlenose dolphin, in the warm waters of the expansive Gulf of Mexico goes without saying. But also calling Northwest Florida home are the bobcat, black bear and gray fox as well as high-flying American eagles and red-tailed hawks. This area of Florida wouldn’t be known as paradise without them. The only organization in Northwest Florida that rescues, rehabilitates and then releases indigenous animals, including dolphins and sea turtles, is the Emerald Coast Wildlife Rescue (ECWR), which was founded by Destin resident George Gray in 1994. Over the past 25 years, the rescue has grown exponentially, culminating with a move to a new home in Navarre this past March. “For the first time in our history, we’ll have purpose-built facilities,” said executive director Carol “Stormy” Andersen. When it was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 2004, the refuge operated out of volunteer homes. It was later located in Destin and then on Okaloosa Island. Its coverage area extends from Escambia County to western Bay County. Most people are familiar with the rescue of sea creatures or birds, as well as woodland creatures such as foxes or raccoons. But only refuge insiders know that the organization dealt with 127 different species last year. “We might get a critter in here that we’ve never seen before,” Andersen said, “so our wildlife technicians and our interns will get online, and they’ll call whatever specialist there is out there to make sure we’re treating those animals appropriately.” Bill Andersen, president of the board of directors, and wife Carol donated the 2-plus acre parcel for the new location of the refuge in 2017. Its site in Navarre is

on Clopton’s Circle, near East Bay and just off State Road 87. Carol Andersen estimated the total cost of the project at slightly more than $720,000. That money came from donations and fundraising. The new refuge includes: ▪ A medical center with a full surgical suite — pre-op, post-op, recovery and nursery as well as a necropsy suite. ▪ An education outreach center that includes a visitor center, gift shop and education center with displays and indoor/outdoor classrooms. ▪ Animal habitats that include both rehabilitation and animal ambassador enclosures. “Our med center plans were drawn to our veterinarian’s and technician’s specifications and reviewed by other animal care experts,” Andersen said. “We’ll be able to keep our supplies and equipment where they are needed, instead of in a closet because that’s all we had available. We’ll certainly be able to work more efficiently.” Wildlife health technician Gena Medley and wildlife rehab intern Morgan Pelfrey force feed a bird of prey in the refuge’s intensive care unit. That measure is required when raptors refuse to eat foods on their usual diet.

And that’s not all. “On the education side of the house, we’ll actually be able to use all of our tools and supplies when we’re making presentations,” Andersen said. “In the past, we’ve had equipment we could rarely use because it was too big to load into vehicles.” The Andersens became familiar with the refuge through unforeseen circumstances. “We got started because my dog Quigley

caught a squirrel that had been mauling the house,” Carol said, the memory producing a hint of a smile. “And we didn’t know where to take it, so Bill called around and he found the wildlife refuge and started volunteering the next day.” Not long after that, the Andersens fostered and released seven pelicans. “Seeing them after putting them back in the wild was just everything to me,” Carol said. The refuge staff includes Shelby Proie, wildlife rehabilitator and marine mammal stranding coordinator; Michelle Pettis, wildlife rehabilitator and volunteer/ intern coordinator; and Dr. Phil Blumer, veterinarian. “You get to help save lives, and every day is different,” said Proie. “It’s very challenging all the time but in different ways. I took this position because I’ve done wildlife rehabilitation for over five years,

and I wanted to get back into the marine mammal field. I like the diversity of being able to do both, and there’s not many places in this country you can do that.” Six types of volunteers contributed a total of 10,000 hours last year: ▪ Refuge volunteers (diets, feeding and cleaning). ▪ Foster volunteers who take animals home and bring them in for weekly checkups. ▪ Marine mammal stranding team. ▪ Rescue volunteers. ▪ Docents and education volunteers. ▪ Student volunteers. “What the volunteers give us is phenomenal,” Andersen said, “and we really rely on them to keep the organization going.” Anna Hackney of Navarre is working toward a wildlife rehabilitation license

while serving on the rescue team. She attended the University of West Florida and Troy University in Alabama and has a master’s degree in public administration. “I was born and raised in Gulf Breeze, and my mom (Mae) was an Audubon volunteer,” Hackney said. “We used to rehab owls on our back porch. Now, as I’ve gotten older and I see their habitats are being destroyed, there’s a need for people to step up and rehab the animals and educate people along the way.” Intern Tabitha Hall has a degree in wildlife biology with a minor in wildlife rehabilitation from Lees-McCrae College in North Carolina. Her husband, Jacob, is stationed with the Air Force at Hurlburt Field. Since joining the refuge last July, Hall has made it a point to give hope to people concerned about the survival of an animal. “It’s amazing when people think it’s a lost cause and we can turn it into a really good situation,” Hall said. “There’s a lot to do when you think you can’t do a lot.” CONTRIBUTING WRITER ZANDRA WOLFGRAM

WHAT DO CRIMEA, CAESAREA, Cancun, Roatan and South Walton all have in common? Underwater museums of course. Last year the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA)’s Art In Public Spaces Program teamed with the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA) to install the first permanent Underwater Museum of Art, located about a mile offshore of Grayton Beach State Park. “After nearly two years of planning and fundraising, it was a surreal hour watching the artwork being lowered into the Gulf of Mexico last summer,” said CAA Executive Director Jennifer Steele. “From the moment our board president, Allison Wickey, brought this idea to the

table as a co-project with SWARA, we have been encouraged by the excitement from and support of our local community and the national and international interest it has received. It has been a wonderfully challenging experience for the CAA to reach outside our comfort zone to make this vision a reality, and it could not have happened without our partnership with SWARA and contributions from Visit South Walton, the National Endowment for the Arts, Alys Foundation, Visit Florida and all of the sculpture sponsors who wanted to be a part of this unique project.” The first installation of seven works of art occurred last year, and the 2019 call for entries closed in January. Twelve entries were selected for this year’s

Gulf home. “The perspective when viewing the sculptures in a marine environment is drastically different than when on land,” said SWARA Board President Andy McAlexander who dove the UMA site right after the deployment took place last year. “The intent of the project was proven within an hour of deployment when we could see schools of bait fish swarming the structures, completely validating the entire effort. I have never been prouder to have had the privilege to work with such talented and visionary people. This project has changed my perspective towards art.” As part of the 2019 installation, George Sabra’s EL PLASTICO replicates a plastic bottle on a massive scale, constructed of

environmentally cast concrete. This representation of something that generally harms marine life can instead play a direct role in helping it to flourish. “As an environmental artist, I create artwork that brings to light again and again the impact that our current consumption is having on our environment,” says Sabra. “By inviting the public in, we can keep the awareness front and center regarding these serious environmental issues facing the ocean, land, air and human health, inspiring people to come up with positive solutions for change.” ASPIRATION designer Shohini Gosh is a Denver-based artist originally from New Delhi, India. “Aspiration” is a silhouette of a young girl’s face looking up and longing at the wonders of the

future. The sculpture has a beautiful balance of negative and positive space through and around which fish and turtles may swim without hindrance and on which coral can grow. A snorkeling enthusiast and great lover of turtles, Gosh loves creating in 3D and believes in bringing art outside the white walls of a gallery and into public spaces, creating a sense of community pride. Artist Vince Tatum pays homage to one of mother nature’s most amazing creations found on coral reefs, the giant barrel sponge, with his sculpture X.MUTA. Vince explains, “My goal is to imitate Mother Nature’s blueprint as best I can, but with clean-sprayed cement over rebar. I’ll leave the cement in its organic blown state, to mimic the ebbs and flows of the surface of a sponge and to give “X.muta” the properties that make the giant barrel sponge such an attractive and accommodating host to marine life.” While visiting “X.muta,” underwater museum of art divers can also check out Vince’s “SWARA Skull,” which was part of the 2018 UMA installation. These three pieces of art, now along with 16 others, represent the creativity, sense of purpose and dedication to the environment the exhibit founders had in mind from the outset. In this instance, the Underwater Museum is a win-win-win. Divers now have an opportunity to visit the first museum if its kind in the United States. Fish have a newfound habitat to not only protect them, but also to offer a place of habitat. And finally, the Members, residents and visitors to 30-A and South Walton have an art installation that exceeds expectations every day of the year. So, if you or a friend is diving off Grayton Beach, don’t be afraid of the huge skull off in the distance. Rather, embrace the hospitality of the pineapple and extension of six arms from the octopus, to name a few. Then stop to marvel at all of the exhibits in the CAA/SWARA Underwater Museum.

The Underwater Museum of Art now houses 19 works of art, including artist Justin Gaffrey’s “Self Portrait,” which was added in 2018.

“WE’RE STUDIOUS. We’re shrewd. We’re on a mission,” Safe Water for Walton says about itself on its website. In 2017, a group of community leaders stepped up to form what has since become a sustainable nonprofit that is proving to be an increasingly constructive presence. Safe Water for Walton, which started with a galvanizing

concern regarding a pending state permit for exploratory drilling in the regional watershed, has become a successful membership organization that helps promote protection of the region’s sources of drinking water. The chief concern of the nonprofit advocacy organization is the health of the Choctawhatchee River and Bay watershed, which encompasses all or part of six counties in Florida: Walton and also Bay, Jackson, Holmes, Okaloosa and Washington. The organization includes volunteer community leaders, members or supporting partners from all of those counties. Among its activities, the nonprofit brought Operation Medicine Cabinet, a national movement, to Walton County. The free weekend event gives people a chance to safely discard unused or expired medications by taking them to collection points, thanks to support from The St. Joe Company, Gulf Power Company, Walton County School District, Walton County Sheriff ’s Office, grant funding from the state and others. Hazardous waste handlers ensure that the medications — many of which wastewater treatment plants are not equipped to remove — do not enter the water supply chain or the aquatic environment. “Operation Medicine Cabinet” record: three collection tents over two days in one weekend. They have plans to expand. In the wake of Hurricane Michael, YOLO Board — with headquarters in Miramar Beach — reached out to Safe Water for Walton with an interest in combining forces to help storm victims. Working strategically, they delivered food and supplies to the front lines in the devastation zone. Fulfilled requests within days went to United Cajun Navy, EOD Warrior Foundation, the Jackson County Red Cross Shelter and others. They also served hot seafood buffets to local first responders in Holmes and Jackson counties, including the National Guard and law enforcement officers from around the state. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, an owner of the Surge Trampoline Park in Fort Walton Beach, endorsed their efforts by donating $10,000 and autographed sports memorabilia to Safe Water for Walton. His funds have been dedicated to restoring electricity and hot, safe running water to family farms and homes of foster parents, retirees, military service members and many others. Community donations to support that effort are still needed. For more information, see SafeWaterForWalton.org/ hurricane-relief. When new members join, half of their dues are earmarked for hurricane relief. Meantime, the No. 1 priority remains protection of the watershed. “The Choctawhatchee watershed is the third-largest river system in Florida in terms of the volume of water discharged,” points out Walton County resident Kelly Layman, one of Safe Water for Walton’s founding members. “That’s astounding.” “Every water body in Northwest Florida connected to the Floridan Aquifer is spring-fed at varying levels, and they’re all vulnerable — even the rare coastal dune lakes. The counties in this watershed are

very close to the largest cluster of documented freshwater underground springs (80-plus in total) anywhere between Tallahassee and Pensacola,” Layman said. “So what may sound like a hyper-local issue really isn’t. It’s regional.” Serving as a busy volunteer point person for an advocacy organization is not something Layman ordinarily does, but she brings to that role abundant connections. She was the first resident to bring up the exploratory drilling issue in public to the Walton County Commission, asking them to oppose the permits, which it did, unanimously. Kelly is no ordinary layman. She has an intimate knowledge of the workings of state government and has relationships with key players, gained from her

Samantha Kasten Restaurant Manager, WaterSound Beach Club What led you to your current job?

I’ve been here for about five years now. When I first came to St. Joe, I was actually going to interview at The Pearl. I’m originally from Destin and I wasn’t really familiar with 30A, but I heard St. Joe was having a job fair and The Pearl opening the rooftop bar was one of the most exciting things happening in the area. I interviewed with one of the assistant managers at the time. She ended up offering me a serving position here at WaterSound Beach Club on the spot. Back when I started, we used to serve, bartend and do a little bit of everything all at the same time. I think that overall knowledge has helped me move into the role I’m in now. What is a typical work day is like for you?

Typically we get here around 9 a.m. and the first thing to do is set up the bar. I have two hours to set up, then it’s time for lineup, where we run through the day’s events, specials and any new Members or teammates so everyone is on the same page. We move right into lunch service. We’re usually busy from around 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. where we see the bulk of our Members. We have a small break between lunch and dinner time where we can re-group and prep for the night. We’re usually here until 8 or 9 p.m. in the season. With the upstairs bar and our view, it’s difficult to not be the happening sunset spot, so we usually hit a big pop right around 6 p.m. for sunset. My schedule

changes when there are events going on. Typically, wherever there’s an event, that’s where I’ll be bartending, whether it’s on the pool deck, at the beach bar or at the downstairs bar. That makes it fun because it changes the pace of your usual routine. What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?

The biggest thing I can think of right now, which is also my biggest

personal accomplishment, is that I just graduated college in December 2018. I was able to take classes at University of Florida online while continuing to work. They actually began offering the Environmental Management program online the first year I started here, which is great timing. I was going to school full time while I was working full time. Some people knew, but I don’t think very many knew that I was doing both.

of my family lives in Chicago. We make it a point to go to visit them in Chicago at least once a year. I’m so thankful that my parents live close by because even after a long day, I’ll drive to Destin to spend time with them. What’s your favorite part about what you do?

What three words would best describe you?

Oh, that’s tough … dedicated, empathetic and optimistic. When you’re not working, what’s your favorite thing to do?

If I’m not bingeing Netflix, I’m probably reading. My current go-to on Netflix is “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” As far as books, lately I’ve been into John Grisham crime novels. I’m all over the place with what I read. I just bought an environmental book, but I’m also such a sucker for cheesy rom-coms. Of course, I like all of the other common answers like going to the beach or listening to live music somewhere. But if it’s just me-time, I’m usually lost in a book somewhere. What’s the most unique request you’ve received?

I think the most fun for me, just a total change from your everyday requests, is to be included in proposals. One of my favorite memories here ever was when we had a Member’s daughter get engaged on the beach here. Then they came up to the bar to celebrate. We had these champagne flutes engraved with the WaterSound logo that we had stored here for a long time. When they came in, I just happened to remember where they were and so I grabbed a couple of the flutes and poured a glass of champagne for them. To this day, whenever I see those Members, they mention that night and being able to celebrate.

If you could do another job for a day what would it be?

I would want to be a writer for a day if I could. Just to get in the mind of someone that can totally envision a life that doesn’t exist. Especially people who write utopian/dystopian worlds. That world doesn’t even exist, so I’d love to know how they wrap their mind around that. Like a J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter. What are you passionate about?

That’s a tie. I thrive when I can make other people’s days better. It sounds cheesy, but I’m happiest when I know that I made a positive impact on someone that was sitting at a table or at the bar here. It doesn’t matter who comes through or whatever they might have going on, I want everyone to have the best possible experience with us and just enjoy being in the moment. But also environmental science is my thing. Sustainability and being eco-friendly are very important to me. Personally, my family is everything to me. I come from an Italian family, and my mom’s side is huge. My parents, my grandmother and my aunt live here. But the majority

Honestly, it’s the face-to-face with our Members every day, and it’s the team that I work with. I’ve worked at other locations where I’ve had less face-to-face interaction, and I just love the sense of family and community we have here. If you think about it, sometimes we’re here for 10-12 hours a day in the busy season, so you’re spending the majority of your day with the people you work with. It’s important that you’re with people you enjoy being around. And I’m lucky that I get to come to work and spend the day with some of my favorite people. When Members come through, some are here full-time, and we see them every day. It’s fun to watch their kids grow up. I met a woman that was pregnant my very first year working here, and now she has a 5-year-old. I just think that it is so cool that I’ve been able to watch her family grow. We have Members that only visit a few times a year, but every time you see them, you are just able to pick up right where you left off. We’re here to take care of them, but I truly feel like they take care of us by letting us be part of their lives — whether it’s full time or just a few times a year.

THIS COUPLE DATED a week before getting engaged. But the romance probably started years before; they just didn’t see it. Marty and Mack Corbin have known each other almost their entire life. Their parents were friends in their small hometown of Huntington, Pennsylvania. “Mack was three years older, and after graduation he went to Penn State. We would see each other from time to time when he came home from school, and

then I graduated high school and left for Chandler School for Girls,” says Marty. According to Mack, they were both home from college at the same time in the spring of 1971, and a mutual friend set them up on a blind date. Seven days later, they were engaged. They got married later that year, and 48 years later, they are still filled with joy and happiness. Mack’s father was in the highway safety industry, selling various components used in the construction and maintenance of roads. “I always thought that Dad was in a great business because so many interstate highways were expanding and towns across America were growing. Streets were everywhere. So, I found a company that sold many of the same products as the one my dad worked for,” says Mack. After moving to New Jersey for several years and becoming very successful in highway

safety sales, Mack and Marty decided to venture out and start a company of their own. They moved to Dublin, Ohio, and Marty became the CEO of their newly established company. “We thought it was important to have Marty run the company, owning the majority interest, because that opened many doors for us. Bidding government projects as a minority owned business enterprise helped to make us much more competitive. I sold our products, and she ran the business — and ran it quite well I might add,” states Mack. As their business grew, Marty and Mack began vacationing in Florida, looking for respite from the long snowy winters. “We loved the east coast of Florida. It was easy to get to by plane, and our two boys enjoyed the beach of course,” says Marty. As time went on and vacations came and went, they

But, as luck would have it, a close family friend had just returned from vacationing in the Florida Panhandle on 30A. “He went on and on about the white sandy beaches, emerald waters and relaxed lifestyle of the Florida panhandle,” says Marty. The Corbins decided to give it a try and they

came down to Seacrest Beach the following year. As they say, the rest is history. Their first home was actually on the same street as their present home. They liked being able to walk to the beach and were close to lots of amenities. After several years, they bought a condominium at Wild Heron. “I loved playing on Shark’s Tooth, and it made sense for us to have a vacation home

there. We bought the condo to live in while we built our vacation dream home. Then we bought another condo as an investment. Later, we sold the condos, completed our home and began to settle in as part-time residents. By that time, we had sold the family business to our two sons, and in 2015, we retired to the Panhandle,” Mack says. Golf was on his mind. “We loved living at Wild Heron because of the golf course and other amenities that The Clubs by JOE offers Members. Needless to say, our kids and grandkids have always had a great time coming down. I must say that when they came to visit, every day was an adventure to one of the clubs to play golf, sunbathe, swim in an awesome pool, sit on the beach or enjoy a meal together in one of the restaurants,” says Marty. “However, the five grandkids would tire me out playing golf because, as the Member, I always had to be with them when they went to one of the clubs,” Mack explains. All that changed with the new Generational Membership offered to Member families. “Now we have the luxury of joining the other family members at our leisure and our pace,” says Marty. associates. Golf, dining, the beach and just plain leisure time has captivated all their guests. “Our sons have taken advantage of their robust Member status to utilize Club offerings, and I have no doubt that they have shown friends and business associates just how magical this unique piece of Florida can be,” says Marty. The Corbins loved Wild Heron, and their decision to find a home on the water was indeed a difficult one for them to make. So in 2015, they sold their home in Wild Heron and purchased a home that is coincidentally back on the street where they had vacationed and had subsequently purchased their house many years ago. “I recall the day I made the offer on this beachfront home,” says Mack. “I was on the second tee at Arcadia Bluffs Country Club in Arcadia, Michigan, playing with a group of The Clubs by JOE Members being hosted by Mike Jansen. I put in an offer on this house, and it was accepted just as I got up to tee off. I can’t recall how

“Our sons have taken advantage of their robust Member status to utilize Club offerings, and I have no doubt that they have shown friends and business associates just how magical this unique piece of Florida can be.” — Marty Corbin I fared on that trip, but I do know I won because Marty and I ended up with this incredible house with a view that just can’t be properly described. Our latest journey began that day.” When asked about their favorite club experiences, both Corbins are quick to endorse Member Mondays and Winedown Wednesdays at WaterSound Beach Club. But they are also quick to recall the great moments they have had dining outside on the veranda, watching dolphins play in the distance, looking for shelter as a rain shower approached or just stopping in

the Club to visit with friends. “We have found that there are many Members who live here year-round and we run into them all the time. It’s comforting to know that there is a sense of community here that I don’t think we would find in most other clubs,” says Marty. Like many Members, the Corbins moved here to fulfill a dream. Yet, there is no doubt that this couple is helping to fulfill other’s dreams with their outgoing personalities, love for leisure and wideopen welcoming arms for all.

Beyond Fun.
