Letter to the St. John’s Community

DEAR DONORS,

The generous support St. John’s receives from its community is a blessing that enriches the educational opportunities of our students and empowers our faculty as they deliver the Lasallian mission each day in the classroom. St. John’s students are supported in numerous ways through your gifts. Tuition assistance makes it possible for qualified students to benefit from a St. John’s education, which their families could not afford without your help. Over the past decade, iPads have replaced books, and St. John’s has created a dynamic, innovative, technology-integrated curriculum through your charitable gifts. Your donations enable our robotics team to compete at regional and national tournaments and provide funding for our Christian Service trips to Montana, Mississippi, New Jersey and beyond, where students serve communities in need. The more than 500 students involved in the visual and performing arts enjoy state-of-the-art studios and rehearsal rooms thanks to the generosity of the St. John’s community. Moreover, the music and choral groups perform in national competitions, most recently in Florida, with the assistance of the community’s philanthropy. Athletic teams travel, players develop to peak physical condition and teams thrive thanks to the donations that enhance the training room and sponsor the participation of our talented student-athletes in tournaments. Each gift helps fund numerous activities that expand the horizons of our students; each gift is an act of faith and trust in the next Lasallian generation. Your support ensures St. John’s remains true to its mission of offering a diverse and dynamic college preparatory education steeped in Catholic values. Thanks to your generous gifts, St. John’s will continue to produce Lasallian alumni who understand that their responsibility in the world is to pay forward the bounty they receive at St. John’s through service to their community. St. John’s Endowment Funds St. John’s is grateful to those benefactors who have contributed to the school’s endowment funds. Endowed funds provide a permanent source of income to the school. In order for the school to continue providing a high quality college preparatory education, St. John’s endowment must continue to grow. George and Catherine Aydinian Scholarship Fund Established in 2011 with love and gratitude to our parents for their generosity and dedication, by sons Gene ’68 and John ’71.

James J. Brogan ’70 Scholarship Fund Established by the Brogan family in 2012. This fund is created in loving memory of James Brogan, a graduate and former teacher at St. John’s, by his family.

Joseph and Judith Doyle Scholarship Mary Ellen Degnan-Burke Scholarship Fund Established in 2007 through a donation from the Burke Family. This scholarship is given with preference to those students from singleparent families.

ENDOWMENT FUND SPOTLIGHT:

THE CARL M. WACLAWIK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP For the past decade, the St. John’s community has come together each fall to celebrate the life of Carl Waclawik ’10 by doing what he loved best – running. On Oct. 4, 2017, students, faculty, staff and alumni participated in the 10th annual Waclawik 5K race, organized by the SJC cross country team.

While St. John’s started the tradition of the community 5K in 2005, the race took on a new meaning in 2007, after Waclawik died during his sophomore year. His classmates and teammates suggested the race be renamed in his honor, a fitting memorial for the avid cross country runner. Each year, his sister, Sydney Waclawik ’07, returns to campus to start the race. “Coming back to St. John’s every fall to attend the Waclawik 5K allows me to celebrate his life and honor his memory,” she said. “My brother had a passion and zest for life that was truly contagious, and for the St. John’s community to celebrate his life every year at the Waclawik 5K allows his memory to live on.” 6

In 2017, the Waclawik family established the Carl M. Waclawik Memorial Scholarship in his memory. It provides financial assistance to a current member of the Cadet Corps who participates in co-curricular activities and demonstrates excellence in the classroom. “In creating Carl’s memorial endowment, we wanted to make funds available to a deserving student based on our faith that the money will do some good without specifically knowing the recipient or the outcome,” said Phil Waclawik, Carl’s father. “While the purpose of each loss – in our case, Carl – is beyond our comprehension, this gift is based on our faith in a hopeful outcome, in much the same way that we keep our faith in one day seeing our son and brother again when our time on earth is done.” To support St. John’s endowment funds, please contact our Alumni and Development Office at 202-364-0229 or mesten@stjohnschs.org.

For many years, their father, Dr. Leo B. Gaffney, served as team physician and cared for the Christian Brothers at St. John’s.

Established in 2003 by former students in honor of Mr. Ferry, alumnus, devoted teacher and coach of 35 years at St. John’s. This is an academic scholarship awarded to students with exceptional math skills.

Established in 2008 through a generous gift by Earl Griffin ’39 in honor of Joe Gallagher ’39, former teacher and coach at St. John’s.

Established in 2007 by Mr. and Mrs. John Hassett ’70 to provide scholarship support for deserving students.

Marge Gasser Memorial Award

James “Bubba” Healy Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 1998 by the Gasser Family in honor of Marge, former Mothers’ Club president and mother of four St. John’s graduates: Timothy ’74, Mark ’75, Jeffrey ’79 and Jonathan ’80. This annual award honors an individual who is an excellent educator and has shown dedicated service to St. John’s and its students. The St. John’s Mothers’ Club presents the award.

Established by the Class of ’55 in memory of their classmate.

Established in recognition of the longstanding friendship between the Epstein Family and St. John’s. This scholarship is dedicated to inspiring religious diversity and tolerance.

Sgt. Maj. Vincent L. Fisher Scholarship Fund Established in 2011 by CSM Vincent Fisher’s former students in honor of his many years of service to the students and families of the St. John’s community. This annual award goes to a member of the Cadet Corps who also contributes to the school through extracurricular activities.

Established in 1990 by his wife, Dr. MaryAngela Harper, and their three sons, John III ’69, Michael ’71 and Dennis ’75 in memory of John Harper, Jr.

Charles T. and Helen D. Hellmuth Scholarship Fund

Established in 2010 in honor of Bro. Tom’s 16 years of outstanding service as president of St. John’s for the purpose of providing financial assistance to St. John’s students who show exemplary leadership skills.

Established in memory of Charles T. Hellmuth. Charlie was a 1944 St. John’s graduate and very proud of his association with the school. The scholarship is in remembrance of the solid education and ethical principles instilled in him by the Christian Brothers during his formative years. Charlie used his St. John’s experience as a stepping stone, graduating magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame and then starting a successful insurance and employee benefits business. It was Charlie’s wish that this fund provide future students the same opportunity that he received to propel them to success in college and the rest of their lives.

Bill and Betty Scaggs Scholarship Fund

Clifford L. Patterson, Jr. Scholarship Fund Awarded to a deserving sophomore who has demonstrated leadership in a team sport, with preference given to a member of the Cadet Corps. The recipient will maintain honor grades and reflect the Lasallian ethos of humility in service to others.

John T. Peak ’63 Scholarship Fund The John T. Peak Scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduate of the Christian Brothers’ San Miguel Middle School of Washington, DC, and it will be renewed to that student each year as long as the student attends St. John’s and is recommended by the Counseling Department.

Pierce Family Scholarship Established by Albert C. ’62 and Mary Ann Pierce in honor of his late parents, CWO and Mrs. Albert C. Pierce, USMC (Ret.). This academic scholarship is given with preference to students who have lost a parent while attending St. John’s and perpetuates the work of the Brothers who allowed Al to finish his St. John’s education on scholarship after the passing of his father.

Quinn Faculty Enrichment Fund This fund is used specifically to award professional development grants to staff members who distinguish themselves through extraordinary service to the St. John’s community. It is hoped that these funds will provide staff members with the tools to grow as Lasallian educators while honing their professional and personal skills.

The Quinn Family Scholarship Fund Established in 1988 in honor of John A. Quinn, Sr. ’07 and Vivian E. Quinn and their heirs, by George J. Quinn ’43, alumnus and former trustee of St. John’s.

Doonie Waldron Memorial Fund This scholarship fund is named in honor of Bill ’54 and Betty Scaggs and their longstanding support of the St. John’s community and its students.

Established in 2008 to honor the memory of Doonie Waldron ’49, who served the St. John’s community as a teacher and coach for more than 30 years.

James Walton Scholarship Fund Dr. C. Francis Scalessa Scholarship Fund Established in 1984 by alumni in honor of Dr. C. Francis Scalessa, who gave more than 15 years of service to St. John’s as a team physician. Each year, alumni organize the Doc Scalessa Golf Tournament to raise money for this scholarship.

Simmons Alumni Fellows Fund Established in March 2012 by Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Simmons, parents of Tucker Simmons ’11. This endowment provides a stipend to two members of each class, chosen prior to graduation, to serve as Alumni Fellows for five years. They are charged with creating multiple events each year to encourage their class ties through their fifth reunion.

SJC Christian Brothers Community Scholarship Fund Established by the Brothers for the benefit of students and faculty.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN IN ACTION: THE DONATELLI CENTER FOR THE VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS In May 2017, St. John’s closed out the Campaign for Arts, Mission and Ministry, a capital campaign that allowed the school to create student-centered spaces designed to inspire young men and women to open their minds and unlock their talents. The Donatelli Center for the Visual and Performing Arts provided much-needed space for our studentartists to nurture their talents. The renovation of our fine arts studios and construction of the 15,000-square-foot performing arts wing have transformed our fine arts and vocal and instrumental music programs.

“I was at St. John’s when the chorus room was still a floorto-ceiling carpeted dungeon and didn’t have the greatest acoustics. The new arts center has changed our sound completely. With available practice rooms for rehearsing, plenty of pianos and a beautiful space to sing in, we’ve grown so much and gotten so much better. There are so many “great things about our

performing arts center. All the performing arts rooms have great acoustics, each tailored to the group that plays in them. Each room has two practice rooms, allowing students to practice during and after school. The band room has many lockers, allowing for easy storage of instruments and other necessary items. CAPITAL CAMPAIGN IN ACTION: THE CAP MONA FAMILY STUDENT CENTER In May 2017, St. John’s closed out the Campaign for Arts, Mission and Ministry, a capital campaign that allowed the school to create student-centered spaces designed to inspire young men and women to open their minds and unlock their talents. The 8,200-square-foot Cap Mona Family Student Center has become the heart of the campus. Appropriately, just as the spiritual development of our students is the core of a Lasallian education, the center serves as the home of the new Lasallian Mission and Ministry Center. Students flock to the Veihmeyer Student Lounge, and our Mission and Ministry Office regularly hosts meetings to coordinate retreats, seminars, service trips and liturgies and provides opportunities for students and faculty to reflect upon and share their faith. The student center also houses a theater complex featuring a director’s office, dressing rooms, a green room, additional storage for props and costumes and the Gene Morrill Blackbox Theater. Finally, the Borger Promenade is a glass-enclosed student walk with casual seating that links the center to our current facilities and connects to an outdoor patio in the new Gletner Courtyard.
