GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings

TO THE PARENTS, ALUMNI, AND FRIENDS OF ST. JOHNS,

As we gather to honor six individuals with St. John’s most prestigious award, we recall first medal recipient Archbishop Philip Hannan ’31, a distinguished leader through his service to St. John’s, the Church, and the greater community. The President’s Medal is presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to society or who have provided a new direction and hope for the future. Like Archbishop Hannan, these individuals embody our Lasallian values of faith, achievement, leadership, and service.

Tonight we honor those who have had a significant impact on the success of St. John’s: Doreen Engel, Catholic school educator; Branden Jacobs-Jenkins ’02, American playwright; James Kernan ’70 and Chris Kernan, leaders in the Catholic community; James S. O’Connell ’73, president, Jim Koons Automotive Companies; and Rear Admiral David N. Rogers ’54, U.S. Navy (Ret.). Through the generous contribution of their unique gifts and talents, they forged a vision for St. John’s that is remarkable for its ingenuity and faithful dedication to our Lasallian core principles. Together, they have propelled our school toward a promising future.

Each of the honorees models the Lasallian philosophy of a St. John’s education: no person is an island, and we all have a responsibility to one another to develop our gifts for the common good of our world. Each individual demonstrates faithfulness to the Gospel mandate: “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” (Lk 12:48)

At this celebration, we not only honor six members of our community, but we also raise money to ensure that the St. John’s legacy will be available to future generations. The proceeds from tonight’s dinner will benefit St. John’s General Scholarship Fund and the Campus Improvement Campaign.

On behalf of the entire school community, I thank you for your generosity and continued support.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey W. Mancabelli President
