COLLEGE SPOTLIGHT . . .
ANTWON BAILEY Syracuse University
After being named Offensive MVP at St. John’s in 2005, 2006, and 2007, Bailey headed north to Syracuse, where he made a splash as a true freshman. The highlight of his season came against Notre Dame when he led the Orange to a 24-23 victory in South Bend. Bailey took over in the fourth-quarter, finishing with 126 yards rushing and a 26-yard touchdown to lead Syracuse back from a 23-10 fourth quarter deficit. The 5-foot-8 tailback also took some snaps at quarterback, completing his one pass for a 25-yard gain. As a sophomore, his biggest game came against Rutgers, when he amassed 181 all-purpose yards. As a junior, he amassed 860 yards from scrimmage on offense, the second most on the team. To start off his senior season, he ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns to propel the Orange to an overtime victory over Wake Forest. On the academic side, he has made the Syracuse Honor Roll in each of his three years on campus.

ST. JOHN’S FOOTBALL: FALL 2011
RECENT ALUMNI IN THE NFL . . . Several former SJC players through the years have made it to the NFL. From Gene Augusterfer, who played DB for Pittsburgh in the 1930s, to more recent players like Scott Glacken (1960s quarterback for Denver) and Tommy Marvaso (1970s DB for the New York Jets), St. John’s has been well represented at the highest level of football. Mike Kruczek, for example, won two Super Bowl rings for the Pittsburgh Steelers. During his rookie campaign, he filled in for an injured Terry Bradshaw and led the Steelers to six consecutive victories en route to the AFC Championship Game (after four years with the Steelers, Kruczek finished out his career with the Redskins). The most recent alumni to make it in the NFL are Jay Williams, Chris Harrison, Marques Ogden, and Conrad Bolston.
Chris Harrison
JAY WILLIAMS (SJC Class of 1990)
Jay Williams recently finished his 12th season in the NFL and was inducted into the St. John’s Hall of Fame in November 2006. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound defensive end played for the Rams (where he won a Super Bowl ring), the Panthers, and the Dolphins. He played every game of every season for seven straight years. Twice (2000 and 2002) he recorded six sacks. In 2003, he recovered two fumbles. He has also intercepted two passes. At St. John’s, Williams was a standout tight end and defensive lineman, as well as a star center on the basketball team. He was also a captain of the 1989 championship football team. He played his college ball at Wake Forest.
Jay Williams
CHRIS HARRISON (SJC Class of 1990)
Chris Harrison played his rookie season for the Detroit Lions in 1996. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound offensive lineman also spent time with the Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Ravens. At St. John’s, he was an all-star lineman for the 1989 championship team. He played his college ball at Virginia.
Jay Williams
RECENT ALUMNI IN THE NFL . . . MARQUES OGDEN
(SJC Class of 1998) Marques Ogden played his rookie season for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2003. The 6-foot-5, 312-pound offensive lineman later joined his older brother, Jonathan, with the Baltimore Ravens. He then signed a contract with the Buffalo Bills. He also played for the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe. He played the 2007 season with the Tennessee Titans. At St. John’s, Marques was a two-way lineman before becoming an all-conference player for Howard University, where he recorded 147 pancakes during his junior and senior seasons
RICO MCCOY (SJC Class of 2005)
Out of college, Rico McCoy signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He finished his college career in 2009 as one of the all-time top tacklers for the University of Tennessee. In 2009, he led the Volunteers in tackles after finishing second on the team in both 2007 and 2008. At St. John’s, McCoy led the team in tackles and was a bruising running back. He was named First-Team All-Met and was selected captain of the Army All-American Team. A Mush Dubofsky Award Winner, he had scholarship offers from Ohio State, Miami, Florida State, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, among others. McCoy currently plays in the Canadian Football League.
CONRAD BOLSTON
(SJC Class of 2003) Conrad Bolston just completed his Conrad Bolston rookie season. He originally signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings before moving over to the Green Bay Packers. In fact, only an overtime field goal separated Conrad from a Super Bowl appearance. For the Vikings, his best game came against San Francisco, where he recorded a tackle and forced a fumble. With the Packers, his best game was against Detroit, when he recorded a pair of tackles. Conrad entered the NFL after being a three-year starter on the defensive line for the Maryland Terrapins. The 6-foot-3, 305-pound lineman bench pressed 465 pounds and established himself as one of the strongest Maryland defensive linemen of all time. His best season was in 2005 when he anchored the defensive line and led the team in sacks despite taking on double teams at the nose guard position. He also led the defensive line in tackles for loss and forced two fumbles. At St. John’s, Conrad was a two-way star, leading the team in tackles and sacks. He was a First-Team All-Met lineman and First-Team All-Met wrestler. He was offered football scholarships by more than a dozen universities, including Tennessee, Ohio State, Florida, Penn State, and Boston College.

MEET THE VARSITY COACHES . . . 2011 COACHES
COACH JOE PATTERSON Enters his eighth season at the helm.
Joe Patterson (SJC Class of 1993) is entering his eighth season as the head coach of St. John’s. During his first seven seasons, the Cadets made the playoffs six times and beat archrival Gonzaga six times. The 46-24 regular season record over the seven seasons is the best seven-year stretch since the 1970s. During his time as the varsity head coach, Coach Patterson has coached four All-Americans, including Rico McCoy (2004),Tony Tucker (2006), Peter White (2008), and Kevin McReynolds (2010). In addition, 49 of his players have gone on to play Division I-A or Division I-AA football. In six of the past seven seasons, St. John’s has spent at least a portion of the season in The Washington Post Top Twenty. Their highest ranking at the end of a regular season was in 2007 when they finished with a 6-1 conference record and a No. 7 ranking in The Post. That was the same year they finished the regular season in a three-way tie with DeMatha and Good Counsel. In 2006, the Washington Redskins recognized Coach Patterson as the High School Coach of the Week, giving the football program $1000 in conjunction with the award. This is Coach Patterson’s 15th year as a high school football coach. He spent five years as the head freshman coach at St. John’s before moving on to the varsity staff at Georgetown Prep. During the course of his two years at Prep, the Little Hoyas amassed a 17-1 record and secured a No. 1 ranking in The Washington Post.
Coach Patterson with his wife Jana and (left to right) Tommy (age 6), Anne (age 8), Eddie (age 3), Patrick (age 5), and Bernadette (age 1). SJC’s reversal of fortune versus the Gonzaga Purple Eagles (the Cadets have won six out of the seven games) has been a distinctive attribute of Coach Patterson’s tenure as head coach. Prior to Coach Patterson’s taking over, Gonzaga had won 22 of the previous 25 matchups. Coach Patterson was only 28 years old when he was named head varsity coach at St. John’s. He graduated as valedictorian from St. John’s and was taught by SJC Hall of Famers Doonie Waldron (Class of 1949) and Joe Gallagher (Class of 1939). Coach Patterson began teaching and coaching at St. John’s after graduating Summa Cum Laude with a triple major from Villanova University. He later received his Master’s Degree from the Catholic University of America. During his teaching career at St. John’s, Coach Patterson has won three different Teacher-ofthe-Year awards, including the Archdiocese’s Veteran Teacher of the Year Award. Coach Patterson currently teaches Honors American Literature. During his tenure at St. John’s, he has also taught a Poe and Hawthorne senior elective, Advanced Editing, Multi-Media Journalism, Print Journalism, Video Journalism, Sophomore Scholars, English 10, and World History. Coach Patterson lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife Jana, his daughters Anne and Bernadette, and his three sons, Tommy, Patrick, and Edward.

Coach Ward graduated from St. John’s in 1993 before beginning a stellar career at the University of Maryland, where he was a four-year starter (one year as a defensive tackle and three years as an offensive guard). The Terps recognized Ward with the prestigious A.V. Williams Award. As a player at St. John’s, Coach Ward helped anchor a solid Cadet team that advanced to the championship game. Coach Ward was a two-time AllAmerican, two-time All-Met player, and two-time allleague player. He was also awarded the Mush Dubofsky Award at St. John’s, which is given to the player who made the biggest contribution to the team. He was recently inducted into the St. John’s Hall of Fame. This summer, Coach Ward became the Assistant Athletic Director at St. John’s. He also teaches Physical Education. Prior to accepting the administrative position at St. John’s, Coach Ward had served as an athletic director and teacher at The Heights School in Potomac, Md.
